Turkey s Accession to the European Union
Relations between Turkey and European integration institutions began with Turkey s application for
associate membership in the European Economic Community(EEC) in 1959. Turkey applied for full
membership in the EEC in 1987 but did not gain candidate status until 1999. Since 1999, relations
between Turkey and the European Union (EU) have gained momentum, and Turkey s EU accession
negotiations began in 2005. Since that time, discussions about the implications of Turkey s
prospective EU membership have become more serious and extensive in both Turkey and the EU.the

EU membership has been regarded as one of the significant tools for achieving this goal in Turkey. In
this context, Turkey has given great importance to its relations with EU integration institutions. The
long history of relations starting with the signing of the Ankara Agreement on 12 September 1963
between Turkey and the European Economic Community (EEC) is an evident indication of this
importance. Turkey, one of the founding members of the United Nations and the Organisation for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and a member of NATO since 1952, showed its
willingness to continue to increase its role in the different areas of Western policy. With the signing of
the Ankara Agreement, trade began to be liberalized, followed by the completion of the Customs
Union by the end of 1995. since the signing of Ankara Agreement, there have been ups and downs in
the relations between Turkey and EU integration institutions. Turkey applied for full membership in
the EEC in 1987. In 1990, the European Council endorsed the Commission opinion underlining
Turkey s eligibility for membership, but deferred the assessment of this application until the
emergence of a more favourable environment. Additionally, despite the advanced relations and
economic integration between Turkey and the EU, Turkey was not characterized as a candidate
country at the Luxembourg Summit in 1997.These developments alienated Turkey and adversely

Chinese Testimonies Of Imperial Japan s Sex Slaves
Another survivor who shared her story was Mardiyah, from Banrubiru, Central Java. Married to a
Japanese corporal, Mardiyah had been deceived into taking a job as a laundry lady, which turned out
to truly be a job where she was forced into sexual services, wash clothes, and help build roads. In her
statement she says, I didn t even know I was pregnant, but when I saw the bleeding, I was relieved. At
least I was spared the shame of having a Japanese child. Umi, from Sukabumi was abducted at 13
years old with her two sisters to a brothel by Japanese soldiers. For 5 long months, her sisters were
constantly abused, beaten and sexually attacked, until their internal injuries eventually killed them. In
part of her statement she states, My sisters were very pretty. The Japanese lined up for them. They
protected me, because I was so young. They would say: Leave my little sister alone, just take me. I
was taken, too, but not so badly. I still was able to have children. Once she had reached freedom at the
end of the war, Umi married a family member because no one else wanted her. Within Chinese
Comfort Women: Testimonies of Imperial Japan s Sex Slaves, Tan Yuhua, born in 1928, explains how
as the only girl in her family, she was taken to become a comfort woman. Her father was disabled
below the waist, and worked as a craftsman. Less than 20 days after her wedding, Tan Yuhua was
kidnapped by Japanese troops. She recounts that they were unable to see them approaching, and

The Can Not Be Interpreted By Us And The World
As the world around us continues to strive to advance technology and gather big data to try to feed
their unquenchable thirst for knowledge, we are finding ourselves losing our true and raw selves as
human beings. We believe that by filling our head with more information, we are invincible and above
all. Our egos are inflating and the kindness in humankind is depleting as people only do things for
their own best interest. What these hungry minds fail to realize is that the world is not a fixed, solid
array of objects, out there, for it cannot be fully separated from our perception of t, it shifts under our
gaze, it interacts with us, and the knowledge that it yields has to be interpreted by us (364). Because
the knowledge of the world has to be interpreted by us and the world around us is continually
changing, who is to say that you can have all of the information in the world? I believe that it is false
hope, even fantasy, for humans to believe that they could ever be all knowing. It is extremely difficult
for those trying to become all knowing to recognize that our knowledge is merely confined within a
certain tolerance (365). This is perfectly represented by Bronowski when he says: We know that we
cannot ask the world to be exact, if an object ( a familiar face, for example) had to be exactly the same
before we recognized it, we would never recognize it from one day to the next. We recognize the
object to be the same because it is much the same; it is never exactly

The Equality Of Sports And Gender Equality In Sports
Women opportunities for competitive sports were very limited, their sport was considered recreational
rather than an actual sport, due to the fact that they were not competitive and there were less rules.
Title IX required society to acknowledge women sports on an equal term to that of men. There are
students participating in university sports, and these programs make an excessive amount of money
from selling the teams merchandise and tickets. There are apparel lines primarily based on athletic
wear, advertisements that consist of athletes promoting all kinds of things to get people to buy the
company s stuff etc. Although, professional leagues do offer opportunities to female athletes, the
treatment however, of a female athlete in society today is different in comparison of their male
counterparts when it comes to media, attendance, endorsements, and wages. Equality Throughout
history, women were to be seen as ladylike and to be seen as anything else. If they were to work out, it
would only be very little so they won t get muscular because it was seen as masculinity. It took a
couple of years for women to be in on the equality of sports. Women went through hardships to be
treated equally and to be accepted and to be seen as a college and/or professional athlete. In 1972,
Congress passes Title IX for the Education Amendments Act. Title IX has improved women s rights
immensely. requires gender equality for men and women in educational funding. When the

High Cost Of College Education
With the growing costs of a college education, some believe that people who cannot afford college
should be able to go for free with government assistance. I believe that a program like that should not
be passed by the legislature. By doing this, money set aside in the social security fund will be
depleted. The government already helps those in need who cannot afford college tuition by providing
grants and loans. A common misconception about free college education is that it will help our country
s economic system. Free college tuition will only hinder the economic system of the United States.
If the United States was to provide free college education to those who cannot afford it, then the social
security system would be undermined even more. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay The Role And Functions Of New Zealand Government
The New Zealand Government has made significant changes to the economy throughout the last 15
years. The operation and organisation of business activity in New Zealand has been affected by this
changing economy. All aspects of the New Zealand Government have been altered. The reason for this
change was to improve the performance by being more efficient. The key reforms are privatisation and
corporatisation of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and restructuring government agencies.
The most significant change was the election of the Labour Party in 1984, which ended the Muldoon
Administration. At this time, New Zealand was in a rut because of poor economic management by the
previous Government. Unemployment was high in 1983 and still ... Show more content on

Some restructuring and reforms affected these sectors.
The New Zealand Government owned many enterprises such as State Insurance, Air New Zealand,
New Zealand Rail, The Bank of New Zealand, and Telecom. In 1987 most of these assets were sold.
By doing this it meant the Government could pay off large accumulated debts and allow these
companies to become more efficient. After the sale of these SOEs that the New Zealand Government
has become more efficient too, they can focus on their primary task by providing essential services.
Some of these services include public hospitals, education, benefits, and emergency relief.
From the reforms came a radical change in New Zealand trade. In 1984 the Government devalued the
New Zealand Dollar by 20%, then in 1985 introduced a floating exchange rate. Along with that, the
removal of agricultural subsidies and import tariffs. It allowed New Zealand to be a fairer country to
trade with. As a direct result, the trade competitive index jumped from 0.72 on 1985 to 0.98 in 1987.
Foreign investment increased as the New Zealand Dollar strengthened against the green back and the
pound. Consequently, importing and exporting firms benefited from the change in policies.
The services that the New Zealand Government provides have ongoing restructuring (which means
altering an already established department) in the State Sector. The State Sector Act 1988, which

APA Style Of Writing
Style is a reflection of one s inner self. It allows our feelings, thoughts and perceptions to speak for
each of us. But, when it comes to conveying information a standardized style is needed. There are
different standardized styles that are in use but during this essay we will look at the style known as
APA created in 1929 and published by the American Psychological Association (Bethel, 2014).
APA style of writing was created with specific rules and guidelines to allow the writings of
professionals to be more consistent to interpretation (Bethel, 2014). The guidelines clearly state how
one is to incorporate citations throughout the text of the essay as well as how to clearly create a
reference listing at the end of a manuscript. Many

Swot Analysis Of Subway
Abstract One of my first jobs a young adult was as a store manager for a local Subway restaurant.
Subway is a franchise that has restaurants all over the United States and in several other countries.
They operate the organization under a stable culture. I will use my personal experience and the five
signs of organizational culture which include mission statement, stories and language, physical layout,
rules and policies, and rituals to explain for the organization conveys its organizational culture.
Mission Statement Subway s mission statement is Delight every customer, so they want to tell their
friends with great value through fresh, delicious, made to order sandwiches, and an exceptional
experience (Farfan, 2017). When reviewing the mission statement we can see that the customer
service and value is of great importance to the organization. The mission statement reflects that the
business is focused on attention to details and creating an experience that will keep customers coming
back and referring others to their stores. The mission statement conveys to both the employees and the
customers that they will have a stable culture. It does so by so by placing emphasis on quality control
and constance. A stable culture is reflected here because Subway will use certain formulas, rules, and
strict policies to make sure the customer gets the same excellent service and product at all of its stores.
Rituals While working for Subway I had the opportunity to visit several locations. There are not a lot
of rituals within the organization. Rituals refer to repetitive activities within an organization that have
symbolic meaning (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, 2012, P. 399). One ritual that is popular in most
subway restaurants is a sandwich building speed test. After an employee had been employed for 90
days a manager would pick a sandwich off the menu and have the sandwich artist make it as fast as
possible. The employee would be scored based on the time it took for them to assemble the sandwich,
how closely they followed the build formula for that sandwich, proper length of the sandwich, and
neatness of the product upon completion. This ritual reflects that stable culture in a way that this

Analysis Of Shooting An Elephant
Sometimes, the people around a man force him to give up his freedom by giving in to what the
audience expects. The person wants to make the audience pleased and wishes to keep his reputation
high. In the short story, Shooting an Elephant , George Orwell, who writes from his own experiences,
describes the life of the narrator, a policeman in a foreign country, Burma. The narrator feels forced to
shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. He does not want to shoot the elephant, but
because the Burmese around him seem determined and excited to see the elephant die, the narrator
feels compelled to do what the natives request to keep his high status and position of authority.
Throughout the time when the narrator has had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Burmese see the narrator with an elephant rifle, they feel excited. With the weapon in the
officer s hand, the villagers anticipated that Orwell plans to shoot the elephant. The Burmese feel as if
they should follow him to the elephant because they want to see if he will actually kill the elephant.
However, from the narrator s perspective, he states, I had no intention of shooting the elephant I had
merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary . In his mind, he wishes that the elephant will
not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the narrator cannot turn
back. Behind him, there was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute.
It blocked the road for a long distance on either side . The villagers expect him to be brave enough to
shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the villagers will laugh and mock him for being afraid to kill
the elephant. The narrator knows that every white man s life in the East, was one long struggle not to
be laughed at . If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack of power over the Burmese.
Therefore, he has no choice.
Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. The
narrator s decision to murder the elephant proves his weakness not his strength; instead, with all the
excited Burmese around him, he was only an absurd puppet

The Pros And Cons Of The Red Scare
In the mid 1940 s America faced a kind of fear that many viewed at the time to be easily justified. The
Red Scare effected many people and ruined many lives during this time. During the red scare people
were black listed in Hollywood and were prevented from finding work. This is because the Red Scare
was a point in time where there was widespread fear and government paranoia by a society or state,
about a potential rise of communism, anarchism, or radical leftism. The black list came around from
the idea that communists were trying to use Hollywood to influence the minds of the people and turn
American citizens in to spies for the Russians. This was no easy time for many Americans, people not
only abused whomever they didn t trust by creating claims that that they were communist with or
without evidence. The first Hollywood blacklist was created on November 25, 1947. This was the day
after ten writers and directors were cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify to the House
Un American Activities Committee. The writer Dolton Trumbo was one of the individuals black listed
and was sent to prison. The movie incarnation of the book about events of his life some think was a
well depiction of his person and life. The book however, containing more detail and seemingly brutal
honest documented events differ from the movie. These differences bring into question what are
motivations, the changes to the store; and for what purpose. Does the movie portrayal of Trumbo

The Mexican State Of Coahuila Y Tejas
American settlement in Texas began with the encouragement of first the Spanish, and then Mexican,
governments. In the summer of 1820 Moses Austin, a bankrupt 59 year old Missourian, asked Spanish
authorities for a large Texas land tract which he would promote and sell to American pioneers.
The request by Austin seemed preposterous. His background was that of a Philadelphia dry goods
merchant, a Virginia mine operator, a Louisiana judge, and a Missouri banker. But early in 1821, the
Spanish government gave him permission to settle 300 families in Texas. Spain welcomed the
Americans for two reasons to provide a buffer against illegal U.S. settlers, who were creating
problems in east Texas even before the grant was made to Austin, and to help develop the land, since
only 3,500 native Mexicans had settled in Texas which was part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y
Tejas. Texas or Tejas as the Mexicans called it had technically been a part of the Spanish empire since
the 17th century. However, even as late as the 1820s, there were only about 3,000 Spanish Mexican
settlers in Texas, and Mexico City s hold on the territory was tenuous at best. After winning its own
independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico welcomed large numbers of Anglo American immigrants
into Texas in the hopes they would become loyal Mexican citizens and keep the territory from falling
into the hands of the United States. During the next decade men like Stephen Austin brought more
than 25,000 people to Texas,

Creationism
Bobby Rappach 11 1 12 Mr. Boyle Creationism The concept of Creationism has been around since a
monotheistic Abrahamic God. It is nothing more than a literal interpretation of the creation story of
Genesis as a basis for the creation of everything in the universe. Until the early 1500 s it was the
common belief that the world was flat and this is one the only exceptions that creationist sects have
excepted when it comes to modern day science along with the earth not being the center of the
universe. Today s definition can be understood as Christianity and Catholicism until the years
surrounding 1500AD. Even after such discoveries it had a large amount of belief compared to new
scientific discoveries. As scientific advances over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In geology, instead of the Earth s rock layers forming over millions of years they believe that Noah s
Great Flood brought upon the shape of mountains and diverse amounts of hills, valleys, plateaus etc.
One of the greatest controversies when it comes to creationists is the idea of dinosaurs and humans.
Today the average person could tell you that dinosaurs were around before humans, but not
creationists. They believe that along with other animals, dinosaurs were brought on Noah s Ark and
died out due to rapid climate change. Since dinosaurs were not mentioned in the bible, they were
referred to as dragons, behemoths, and leviathans brings upon the idea in their mind that they lived
along side the ancient people mentioned in the bible. In this they denounce the geology of dating rocks
and fossils by criticizing the formula used to date them back millions of years. In chemistry they have
said that the carbon dating of radioactive isotopes is incorrect because of the lack of 100% accuracy
while being relatively close, they have created there own formula which no matter how they date it, it
will always come to a conclusion of less than 10,000 years ago. Away from the science controversy in
their belief, on a theological level they believe most of the same views as Catholics. There are three

How Does Chaucer Present The Miller To Become Such A Vivid And Vibrant
Character?
The Canterbury Tales is a selection of stories written in Middle
English. On a spring day in April sometime in the 14th century 29 pilgrims (including Chaucer as a
character 30) set out for Canterbury on a pilgrimage.
Among them is a knight, a monk, a prioress, two nun s, the friar, the squire, the yeoman, the merchant,
a clerk, a sergeant of the law, a wealthy landowner, a doctor, the wife of Bath, a supplier, the reeve, a

The solution says Nicholas, is to wait overnight for it in a tub suspended from the barn rafters, and to
cut the tub from the roof of the barn when the water has risen, which carpenter does.
While Nicholas and Alison lie together, Absolon appears and asks
Alison for a kiss. She sticks her bottom out the window, and he kisses it with relish, pausing only
when he feels bristly hair and considers that no woman has a beard. He realizes the prank and,
enraged, disappears to get a red hot poker. Returning, he asks for another kiss.
This time Nicholas, who had risen from the bed to urinate, sticks his bottom out of the window and
farts loudly; Absolon brands him in the rear. He cries for water, awakening the carpenter, who thinks
that the second flood is come at last. He panics and cuts himself down, breaking his arm; the rest of
the town awakens to find him lying screaming in the tub on the floor of the barn. The villagers came
to see the commotion and they saw Alisoun was in the bed and Nicholas standing naked. After that,
the Carpenter was considered a madman and a cuckold by the whole town.
Imagery is one of the key ways that Chaucer describes his character.
He does this through similes using animals repeatedly even within the tale miller compares animals to
people.

The Gay Marriage Debate Compromise
The Gay Marriage Debate Compromise
Although Procon.org and Family Research Council.org (FRC.org) disagree about if or whether gay
marriage should be legal in the U.S.; they do recognize the fundamental right to be married, and the
right to be homosexual. They do however disagree on the definition of marriage and its application to
homosexuality has been challenged. It is possible that Procon.org and FRC.org which built upon their
common goals and concerns about gay marriage; that they might be able to come to terms with a
compromising solution to the relatively new problem in our so society. Homosexuality has existed in
past cultures and has not been tolerated well by most cultures at every period of human existence.

(Family Research Council.org). Fact not fiction, children raised without a father are more likely to be
in the penal system and more promiscuous. If we take the concept of homosexual family and child
raising out of the question, we are left with the marriage aspect still. We do not find homosexual
marriage in nature because a species will not survive, is one way to look at it. It goes against God, is
another way to look at the big picture (ProCon.org). Most of the arguments stem from the fundamental
rights to be happy and pursue life, liberty, and justice. Those same rights are derived from our nation s
belief in a Judeo Christian God and are not found in all countries around the earth. While denying
same sex marriage is believed to be against the constitution, it is in fact not infringing on anyone s
rights to happiness. The right to be gay or homosexual is not infringed upon, but questions, is the right
to be married is for everyone (ProCon.org)? We find that both sides concede unions of some kind are
beneficial to the happiness of the individuals, but the fundamentalists and conservatives do not want
the definition of marriage to be changed. The definition of marriage is between a man and a woman by
God s law and the U.S. Some want to change that law and act more like the majority than the minority,
but the definition is clear. Why not allow them to marry

Charter Schools Vs. Public Schools
At the foundation of the American public school system is the belief that every child deserves a
quality education. To this end, the public school system in America has undergone many reforms. One
of which has been charter schools. Charter schools are independent public schools of choice working
under the auspices of a charter and not governed by the board of education. The charter can be written
by parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, educational businesses, etc. It
determines the school s guiding principles, management and accountability systems. The state
approves the charter and provides funding for the school. Families choose these schools for their
children. ( Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Charter schools differ from traditional public schools on
three basic principles: accountability, choice and autonomy. Charter schools are held accountable for
their ability to educate students, management of finances and handle operations. If they do not meet
the guidelines established by the charter they are closed. They give families a choice as to what school
their children will attend. Finally, charter schools have more autonomy than traditional public schools.
They are able to make their own decisions regarding curriculum and school governance and can focus
on academic achievement instead of bureaucracy. ( Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Ray Budde
first introduced the idea of charter schools in the United States in 1974.

Disadvantages Of Traffic Engineering
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (2013), the role of traffic engineering comes
in play; it is the phase of engineering that deals with the planning, having a good relationships with
other modes of transportation, and traffic operations of roads, streets and highways for the
achievement of safe, efficient and convenient movement of people and goods. Aside from interpreting
relationships among vehicles, traffic engineering applies technology and its principles to plan and
operate facilities for any mode of transportation (Roses, R., 2004.). Furthermore, the objective of
traffic engineering is to explore the factors contributing to traffic congestion, to draw lessons from the
experience that were gained to date so they may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The traffic flow along the Katipunan Avenue, in their opinion, seemed to worsen as the volume of
vehicles passing along seems to get higher. They also complained about the time limit of the stoplight.
In addition, many people had pointed out the presence of trucks during rush hour which makes the
situation more unbearable. Another disadvantage of traffic engineering is that it may cause harm and
discomfort to people as well as to the economy especially if traffic schemes that are implemented are
not suitable to the different vehicles roaming the streets. Such traffic scheme may result to vehicle
collisions that would increase delay especially during peak hours. Also, disobedience of road rules and
regulations may be violated because of the improper implementation of the scheme. These
disadvantages can cause extreme deterioration in the overall safety of motorists and commuters.
It can be concluded that imposing the new Katipunan Avenue traffic scheme presents a positive and
negative implication. First, although it was designed to provide convenience and promote safety
among commuters and motorists, many people still think that there is no use at all in implementing
such new traffic scheme development action because the present condition along the Katipunan
Avenue remains the same. Accordingly, some say that there is still inadequacies present in the new
traffic scheme imposed by the MMDA and they should address as soon as

Risk Factors of Teenage Suicide
Teenage suicide is a major national public health concern facing America today. Thousands of
teenagers commit suicide each year. Many experts believe that teenage suicide is often due to
unpredictable circumstances and can be contributed to hormonal impulses. However, recent case
findings and statistics prove that this is not necessarily true. Although some teenage suicides may be
the result of youthful and impulsive actions, certain risk factors, signs, and symptoms can contribute
to self inflicted death in adolescents. For instance, the gender of a teenager plays a role in their overall
risk of self inflicted death. A recent study shows the suicide rates of teenage boys as being fifty seven
out of a million, but the teenage girl ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cleaning their room and giving away belongings is also a common sign of thoughts of suicide in
youth (2).
Teenagers under large amounts of stress are also prone to suicidal behavior. Personal life events
involving conflict in relationships or traumatic loss often lead to suicidal thoughts. The feelings that
teenagers experience during the time of the separation and divorce of their parents can be
overwhelming, and break ups and other relationship losses can be devastating to teens as well.
Adolescents are often incapable of coping with setbacks such as failing a grade, dropping out of
school, or being suspended from school. Even something as simple as having to relocate can be
overwhelming for some youth (Cornette 4).
Victims of child abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, often feel shame and guilt
associated with these experiences. These emotions can also increase the likelihood of suicidal
ideation. Many victims of ill treatment feel that they are worthless or perceive themselves to be
failures which lead to feelings of hopelessness and suicidal tendencies. Some researchers even suggest
that feelings of hopelessness rather than depression are a better indicator of a potential suicide
involving a teenager. Feeling hopeless, therefore, is an important risk factor when dealing with
teenage suicide (Cornette 3).
Teenagers who become alcohol dependent are at an increased risk of premature death. Many teens

Town Hall By Michelle Malkin Summary
Even though Michelle Malkin, a republican columnist for Town Hall, is for Trump and is obviously
happy he will be President, the one thing she is totally against is millenials and the fact that they are
going to be able to continuously be on their parent s insurance plan until 26. She uses humor, sarcasm,
and evidence to prove a point in this article that preserving this plan is harming society instead of
helping it. Throughout the entire article, her voice was very strong and evident on how she felt about
this topic. She explains her points well by using strong language. Malkin also uses a lot of dry,
sarcastic humor, to really drive her points across. For example, when mentioning the maximum age

I agree that in general, we are more lazy and are a tad hypocritical. Thinking that just because you don
t have to work since you are under 26 and quit your job to do more meaningful things, that is not
necessarily considered a good, productive thing. But being one, a millennial that is, I also see the other
side of the argument. I believe that we can be the most productive when we are passionate about
something and the idea that non millennials have little to no faith in what we can accomplish has a
very negative outcome in what we then actually do. We are very proud of who we are for the most
part, and that may just be part of our generation s view on how life works, but generalizing every
single child under 26 or 31 to say that they are not the most motivated and all we want is free stuff and
to not have to work is not true. If I were to do a study, I bet it would show that they are only happy to

they are broke? They are college students who are trying to pay for continuing their education so they
can further use talents to help the economy all the while taking disses from the older generation saying
how we are so lazy and only want free stuff. Times change, and along with change, there needs to be
adaptations. I do not know enough to say what the mandates should or should not be, but I do not

What Are The Difference Between Yin And Yang And Taoism
Chinese culture is largely surrounded by the idea of balance. We see this in Yin and Yang, and a
balance between light and dark, or tall and short. While the Americanized version of this concept is
the difference between the two, the original concept looks at how yin and yang balance each other and
work together. This idea of balance is integrated in the idea of the five seasons and the elements that
represent those seasons. The five elements are also related to Taoism in many ways. Yin and Yang is
also part of the Chinese world creation myth. They believed that there was Wu Chi and then there was
Tai Chi, or nothing and then something. That something was Yin and Yang, or in balance. For example
When people find one thing beautiful another consequently becomes ugly. (Tzu, Pg.2) While this is
explaining Taoism, it also incompases the idea of Yin and Yang and how they complement each other
creating balance. From this something the World was born and Taoism came into being. Taoism is the
idea of man when he was connected to the earth and all it s creatures. This was known as The age of
perfect Virtue. ((Hoff, Pg.20). This idea was was originally introduced by Chuang Tse who was a
Chinese philosopher in around the 4th century B.C.E. He said In the Age of Perfect Virtue, men lived
among the animals and birds as members of one large family. There were no distinctions between
superior and Inferior to separate one man or species from another. All retained their natural virtue and
lived in the state of pure simplicity... We were once able to communicate with the creatures of the
earth, but then man became greedy and was cast out by the creatures losing its connections with the
beings. We became independent and killed animals for food. Some still remember our connection to
nature and teach it to those around them. From this came practices such as maintaining that balance
through the five seasons. The five seasons are spring, summer, late summer, autumn, and winter
correspond with the five elements and each has its own things that are unique to it. The idea of the five
elements originally came from the idea of yin and yang. The idea of how natural elements interact to
create a balance. Ancient Chinese medical

Mental Disorders In The Film The Big Lebowski
Before the 2000s a large portion of media portraying those with mental disorders was inaccurate and

Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Patrizio Pat Solitano, Jr, played by Bradley Cooper, is shown to be
diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Though Cooper s acting of Pat is more grounded than other
interpretations of the disorder. The conflict within himself is cured by the end of the film when Pat
falls in love with and starts dating Jennifer Lawrence s character, Tiffany. In reality, bipolar disorder
cannot be cured but instead can be treated. In the movie, actor Bradley Cooper plays a man with
bipolar disorder who is being released from a psychiatric hospital. He soon connects emotionally with
a quirky young woman, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who has struggled with her own mental health
issues, largely brought on by her husband s death.Psychologists and other mental health professional
are touchy about how they are depicted in movies. So are doctors, police officers and lawyers. Given
the widespread influence of movies, any profession is naturally going to be invested in whether its
members are portrayed positively and accurately. After all, misrepresentations could potentially lead
to public relations problems. In the case of psychotherapy, it might mean that someone will not seek
help because they have developed a negative perception of counseling. Or in the case of mental
disorder, inaccurate depictions could increase the stigmatization of various kinds of difficulties and
diagnoses. However, as I point out in my book, The Psychology at the Movies, there is a danger in
psychologists being too uptight and literal in commenting about Hollywood movies. Film makers are
not in the same business as psychologists. Their job is to tell dramatic, compelling stories, and
sometimes they distort reality in order to accomplish this task.

Corruption Of Power In Macbeth
Power gives people the ability to control and influence. It is held and used in many ways, significant
and insignificant, for justice, mercy or desire. Because of its ability to give people what they want,
power tempts people into doing the unthinkable in order to acquire it. Power itself is uncorrupted, only
tainted and weaponised by those who hold it. In Shakespeare s Macbeth and Suzanne Collins Hunger
Games: Mocking Jay Part Two, manipulation and suggestion are shown to corrupt power and
contribute to its use in the name of evil. Through a comparison of literary devices in Macbeth and
Mockingjay Part Two , humanity s corruption of power will be explored and unveiled
In Macbeth manipulation is a tool for lady Macbeth to tempt Macbeth into doing evil to gain power.
Derogatory language in the line and live a coward in thine on esteem reveals lady Macbeth s attempt
to manipulate her husband through his own ego. Macbeth at the beginning of the play is a man who
takes pride in bravery. Through referring to him as the opposite of brave for not wanting to murder
Duncan, she is using his ego to lead him into doing what she wants. By manipulating Macbeth s ego,
she gains power over him, as well as the whole of Scotland after Duncan s murder. Using
manipulation to gain power over someone and tempt them into murder is not unique to Macbeth
In Mockingjay, President Snow manipulates Katniss into killing coin, gaining power over her
decisions through suggestion. Repetition in the line I ve been watching you, and you me emphasises
Snow s self perceived similarity to Katniss in that they were both distracted with each other while a
common enemy was in power. Snow suggesting that Katniss is powerless under somebody who is evil
causes her to seek justice against her oppressor and turn her attention away from Snow. She hadn t
thought of Coin as an enemy who should not have power until it was suggested to her. Snow did this
intentionally so that he could eliminate coin and hope to turn the attention away from himself.

This statement is supported by this quote: he wore Mickey as a daily reminder to stay young at heart,
(Brown 143). This explains that the Mickey Mouse watch represents that no matter how professional
and aged one is, they must always take some time to lay back and have some fun in a childish manner.
Furthermore, the watch is important because as Robert embarks on his tremendously imperative and
perilous mission to recover the mass of antimatter, he faces difficult and harrowing situations. The
watch will always be there to remind Langdon that he must always remember to have some fun and
remember the bliss of youth. The Mickey Mouse watch is an innocent childish token☺ (hyphenated

contrasts the situation that Robert finds himself in. In essence, the watch acts as a foil to the harrowing
situation that the antimatter theft creates. The mention of the Mickey Mouse watch provides irony due
to its contrast with the present situation. Undoubtedly, through the examination of the abovementioned
quote it becomes apparent that the Mickey Mouse watch is not only important in the novel, but also

The Turn Of The Screw Analysis
The Turn of the Screw is one of the most controversial works in literature and the text has provoked a
variety of critical interpretations from its publication in 1898. In this novel, the governess tells her
experience with two apparitions that no one but she could see. And the governess accuses the ghosts
of servants for corrupting the children, Miles and Flora. Critics concerning about the truth of the story
are divided two basic camps based on their acceptance or rejection of the governess s credibility as a
storyteller. Some critics believe that the ghosts are real and the governess is a rational and credible
narrator, while the others believe that the ghosts are hallucinations of the governess and regard the
governess as an incredible and mentally abnormal narrator. Also, we could speculate the author s
intention on the basis of his life experience and other works of Henry James. This essay will examine
the reliability of the governess on the basis of the text and interpret Henry James s intention on the
basis of other sources. The critics from psychanalytic perspective claim that the existence of ghosts is
the governess s hysterical delusion. The ghost is the projection of governess s own sexual hysteria,
which resulted from the conflict between native romantic impulses and idealistic innocence required
by Victorian society (Renner). The inexperienced governess encounters the handsome, bold, young
gentleman with charming ways with women (James, 4) and she

Unit 2 Making Food Dye Lab
Lab II: Making Food Dye
By:
Alexander Medina
Lab Partners:
Maxwell Yurs, Eugene Floersch, Masih Harri
Abstract
In this paper, an artificial food dye will be made to mimic the color of Full Throttle. To determine
what food dye are needed, Full Throttle will be put through a spectrometer to determine what
wavelengths are absorbed. Specific wavelengths absorbed will correspond to specific colors absorbed.
It was determined that yellow 5 and yellow 6 will be used to make our artificial food dye to mimic
Full Throttle. Using Beer s Law, it was determined that a concentration of 0.0000236 moles of Yellow
5 and a concentration of 0.0001494 moles of yellow 6. Using our line of best fit from the absorption
graphs, it was determined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When making the absorption graphs for the yellow 5 and yellow 6, the lines of best fit were giving
numbers that were extremely small. After help from the TA, it was found that our concentrations used
where twice as small of a concentration compared to what was actually used for Full Throttle. To
correct this the molarity s were multiplied by ½. For example when finding the x value in our equation
y=2.044x+0.2067 the answer is x = 7.28 5 moles. To correct this, that number is multiplied by 0.5 to
get the correct value of 3.64*10^ 5. This new number is what was used in the equation c1v1=c2v2.
After the solution was made to mimic Full Throttle it was discovered that the beverage only had one
food dye. The experiment was intended to have a beverage with two food dyes present. To make up
for this, orange PowerAde was used and the experiment was repeated for orange PowerAde. The
solution was made for the orange PowerAde and its absorption graph was compared to that of the
diluted orange PowerAde solution. Comparing the two graphs, have the same peaks although these
peaks are at different absorption levels. Since the two graphs have the same peaks it is safe to assume
that the same food dyes are present in both solutions. It is important to note that there are two peaks in
each graph despite only seeing one peak. This is because both peaks are located so close to each other
that they merge as one overall peak. When comparing the two

How Did Religion Influence Persia
Aside from the changes in government, there were many religious influences occurring around
Khayyam as well. Persia was known to follow the Zoroastrian religion. Zoroastrianism is a
monotheistic, pre Islamic religion, of ancient Persia founded by Zoroaster in the 6th century B.C.
(Oxford Dictionary). Although this religion had existed in Persia for a long time, the invasion of the
Turks brought the Islam religion into the country. This left Persians feeling lost. On one hand, they
were familiar with Persian Zoroastrian, but on the other, Islam was the religion that their country was
headed towards. Although there were people who felt obligated to stay true to their past beliefs, the
Islamic way of life was fast spreading and many people began to devote their lives to it. This
conversion to Islam began as gradual, but quickly became more demanding in order to get more
Persians to convert. In the process, many acts of violence took place, Zoroastrian scriptures were burnt

There are factors that can perhaps affect organic growth. If a business is aiming for rapid expansion it
may not find organic growth worthwhile. Rapid expansion could mean that a company is looking to
get into the market with a view of making big profits. This would require an injection of outside
finance to support rapid growth. On the contrary to organic growth is inorganic growth. Inorganic
growth is much more
dynamic and responsive, involves less time as compared to organic and more finance. Inorganic

that help companies expand, cut competition, increase customer base, employ new technology and

Social And Political Views Of Democracy
Democracy offers people the chance to be involved citizens rather than unreceptive subordinates.
However, this right doesn t come unchallenged. Citizens are required to assess a broad range of
political subjects (such as candidates, parties, and policies) and then combine and simplify their
likings in a way that allows them to choose on voting decisions. So, how are these challenges met? In
the United States, some citizens are conservative Republics, some are liberal Democrats, and others
fall in between or outside the two. Recent studies have proposed that these recognitions play an
important part in voting behavior and political perception. Recently, however, more studies have
accumulated advocating for two meager assumptions in regards to this study: that liberal/conservative
identifications are bipolar in meaning and that underlying this bipolarity is cognitive meaning based
on political issues (Conover, Feldman, 265). These variances in political positions are called political
attitudes, and fall on a spectrum between extremely liberal and extremely conservative. Broadly
speaking, this spectrum distinguishes what someone believes about social issues and governments role
in society. These beliefs are formed by a variation of aspects, which can include family, gender,
religion, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and region. Even things like behavior, core ideals and
values, and ideology can affect people s political attitudes.

at the strategies that already exist to help with this problem. It is also important to note that the

reports made about the harassment. Additionally, a few strategies seem to exist for workplace sexual

Battle Of Bien Hoa Essay
The Battle of Bien Hoa
Senior Leaders have analyzed wars for years in hopes of finding the most efficient way to conduct
war. This paper explores the events of that took place during the Battle of Bien Hoa in 1968. Research
was conducted through internet and non internet sources to provide the most accurate facts concerning
this battle. The 29th of January 1968 was the beginning of Battle of Bien Hoa when the Bien Hoa Air
Base went under attack. On 31 January the first Tet Offensive began by the National Liberation Front
for South Vietnam in order to shift the invading army and regain control by the Vietnamese. A total of

Friendly forces had more technology advances. While the VC and North Vietnamese soldiers only had
hand guns, rockets, grenades and some machine guns, friendly forces had better weapons, better
channels of communication, and an intelligence team in place, armored tanks, air power, and a
combination of joint forces. One of the greatest advantages to the friendly forces is advance notice of
an impending attack. This allows the commander to make all out preparations and to be at maximum
readiness when the attack occurs. (BACM Research, 2009) Leadership played a major role in this
battle. Even though much is not said about the Noncommissioned Officers, plenty is said about the
officers in command. They were willing to take control and adjust the mission using the proper chain
of command in order to disseminate the changes to the lowest level. The VC lost approximately 600
Soldiers, US had approximately 35 wounded and 9 Soldiers killed in action, and the ARVN had
approximately 400 dead and wounded Soldiers. Training and team work played a key role in this
battle. In 1967 Combined Arms Operations was established and by mid 1967 the school of armor
increased its training from two hours to twenty hours. Several encounters took place throughout this
battle; it was only through teamwork, preparation, and rehearsal that friendly forces were able to
achieve victory. At first there was a dilemma about whether or not armored vehicles were going to be
approved by the

Summary Of Pay It Forward By Catherine Hyde
Summary: Pay It Forward, written by Catherine Hyde, is about a boy named Trevor who was tasked

chain of events that lead to the sparing of one s man life. Soon Trevor s idea become a national event

Western Front Paul s Transformation
Erich Maria Remarque s page turning novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, is the greatest war novel
ever written. The novel is narrated Paul Baumer, a 19 year old German infantryman on the Western
front during the first world war. The novel follows Paul and his fellow comrades throughout their
journey in WW1. The story describes Paul as he goes through the life of a young German soldier.
From meals and shortages to bombings and death, Paul is confronted with constant and at times
extreme austerity throughout the novel. Afflictions, such as the deaths of his friends and fellow
soldiers, plague Paul s expedition throughout the novel. At the end of the book, Paul is also faced with

Analysis Of The Precession Of Simulacra
Introduction
Lee Harvey Oswald. The name may conjure up specific memories of a living, breathing man for those
who knew him; but, for the general public, Lee Harvey Oswald was and will always be a scarecrow of
patched together media images and texts. This is due to the fact that our only access to Oswald is
through texts. To quote Lentricchia, Oswald is a person of, by, and for the image (2). Image, here, can
be understood as any textual representation of Oswald. In Libra, DeLillo goes even further by
portraying the living Oswald as a fragmented figure whose identity is already a pastiche of texts and
images that he has consumed. In his landmark essay, The Precession of Simulacra, Baudrillard warns
that [s]imulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being, or a substance. It is the generation
by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal (par. 1). Through his consumption of texts,
Oswald constructs an identity without substance or reality: a hyperreal identity. Baudrillard cites a
Borges tale about a ruler who commissions a map the same size as his territory. After the empire falls,
the remnants of the map are still rotting away in the deserts. He believes that this story is helpful in
describing what he means by the precession of simulacra, and he alters the story, saying, The territory
no longer precedes the map, nor does it survive it. It is the real, and not the map, whose vestiges
persist here and there in the deserts (par. 1).

Consequences Of The European Age Of Exploration
The motives, attitudes, and consequences of the European age of exploration and conquest differed
from place to place across Europe, starting from the want for power, ending with many consequences,
both good and bad, and many mixed views and attitudes to exploration. The European age of
Exploration started for a large variety of reasons: to find a sea route to the spices of Asia, to create and
control a greater empire, to expand their knowledge of the world, to spread their religion, and to find
different precious metals and stones. A great majority of Europe was encouraged by this age and
supported the action of exploration. Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain are a great example of being
motivated by the idea of power. They wanted their country to grow and become a bigger empire,
which is supported by their promises to Christopher Columbus (Doc 1). These promises encouraged
Columbus to start exploring the world, and he eventually came across the New World. Here his
religious motivations moved him to try and convert any Indian natives to Christianity and believed
that for him to do this, he must trade with them in peace. However, this peace did not last very long
and ended in a large disagreements and hostility between the two (Doc 2). Another motivation of the
Spanish was said by Queen Isabella, before her death when she said, Our principal intention, in
soliciting from Pope Alexander VI the concession of the lands discovered and to be discovered was to
convert their peoples to our holy Catholic faith... (Doc 4). Her statement confirmed that her main
motive for exploration was to spread her Catholic faith. This motivation influenced the positive views
of the common people. They viewed the New World as a new start to their life and that it offers new
opportunities to them (Doc 3). The different motivations of exploration lead to different attitudes
towards the action, some positive, thinking that exploration was beneficial, and some negative,
thinking that the treatment of the Native Americans were too unfair. Bartolome de las Casas, an ex
conquistador, who converted to a monk, had different views of the motives of the Spanish. He viewed
Isabella and Ferdinand s motives as greedy and that the

Analysis Of The Film The Golden Girls Essay
Since the age of nine, I ve had a dream of becoming a screenwriter, and a movie producer. Where
others only want to see a show or a movie, I have always wanted to be behind the scenes in the
creation of the art. Being behind the scene and being involved in the creation of the film has always
fascinated me. When I was a in 3rd grade I remember watching the Golden Girls. One Saturday
morning, I turned to Lifetime, and there was an elderly lady who was so short and cute, I just could
not turn the channel. The woman s name was Sophia and she made me laugh from the time I had
started watching the TV show until it had gone off. That day Lifetime was running a marathon of the
Golden Girls; those four ladies made me giggle, and smile. So it was then that I started to wonder
about who is behind the TV shows and movies, because I saw myself being that person. At that time I
did not know about a producer or film maker all that I knew is that I wanted to become a part of tv
shows. The Golden Girls made me want to have my own TV series that was just as funny, and that
would make people laugh just as I had done when I watched it. I began carrying a notebook and a pen
everywhere I would go. I would jot down funny lines, and different ideas for scripts for a movie or a
TV series. I then realized that I wanted to become a screenwriter and a film producer. As a
screenwriter, I want to create TV series that brings joy and comfort to all people, no matter what. My
goal as a screenwriter and

What Are The Weaknesses Of The Hong Kong Crisis
Hong Kong has always been a major international financial and business center in the East Asian
region. It could not avoid being affected by the crisis .Even though It was the only economy with a
fully convertible currency and was known for beating speculations on its monetary and fiscal
structure, it was drastically affected by the crisis. It had the estimated exchange reserves of US$90
billion(in 1997),still .it could not protect the country from the financial and economic turbulence
brought in, due to the crisis.
Causes
Interest rates rose in defense of the Hong Kong dollar( which is pegged to the US dollars under
currency board ). The People s Republic of China promised to support to Hong Kong by committing
to not devalue the yuan so as to defend the Hong Kong dollar.
But the floatation of the Taiwan dollar intensified attacks on Hong Kong dollar .

Upgraded the financial market :
One of the weaknesses exposed by the crisis was the underdevelopment of capital markets within the
region. The Hong Kong government, to strengthen the operations and supervision of local securities
market , provided the stock exchange s settlement system to enable the settlement of securities
denominated in other major currencies . This encouraged the listing of Japanese and European bonds.
The Govt set up the Hong Kong exchange and clearing Company in March 2000 and proposed to
merge the stock and future exchange markets, along with three clearing companies in order to increase
efficiency, reduce cost and allow for better supervision. The Growth Enterprise market(GEM ) was
established in November 1999 to create market in which relatively new local and overseas companies

George W. Bush
George Walker Bush is the son of the 41st President George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush. Born on

Massachusetts, where he was the head cheerleader during his senior year. Bush went to college at Yale
University from 1964 till his graduation in 1968 where he finished with a Bachelor s degree in history.

His campaign focused on four themes: welfare reform, tort reform, crime reduction and educational
improvement. He won re election in 1998, becoming the first Governor in Texas history to be elected
to two consecutive four year terms.
In June of 1999, while still Governor of Texas, Bush announced his candidacy for President of the
United States. In the final showdown, it was between Bush and Vice President Al Gore in one of the
closest elections ever. After a third recount, Bush received 271 electoral votes to Gore s 266 and
became the 43rd President of the United States. However, he lost the popular vote by more than half a
million votes. His fist initiative as President was the No Child Left Behind Act, which raised standards
in schools and insisted on accountability in return for federal dollars. The most significant event
during Bush s reign came on September 11, 2001 when terrorists hijacked several planes and attacked
American soil killing nearly 3,000 people. In response to the attack, Bush established the Department
of Homeland Security and announced the War on Terrorism which still continues to this day. Bush
focused his attention on Iraq, labeling them as part of an axis of evil . He proclaimed that they were in
the possession of weapons of mass destruction and had to be stop. Eventually, they captured the Iraqi
dictator Saddam Hussein but no weapons were discovered. In 2000 and again in 2004, Bush was
named the Person of the Year by Time magazine.

Sophocles Oedipus the King and Cocteau s The Infernal...
Sophocles Oedipus the King and Cocteau s The Infernal Machine
Sophocles Oedipus the King and Cocteau s The Infernal Machine relate the same story, yet from quite
different angles. Sophocles play is written in heightened language and spends 1,530 lines on an hour
of time. On the other hand, Cocteau s characters speak colloquially, and his 96 pages cover 17 years,
putting much more emphasis on the events prior to where Sophocles begins his play. Sophocles and
Cocteau present Oedipus character in different lights, and through these characters express contrary
themes. Sophocles proud yet wise Oedipus reveals that a human s future is determined by his actions,
while Cocteau s haughty yet immature Oedipus suggests that mortals ... Show more content on

Sophocles Oedipus is a clever man and a sage ruler. Unfortunately, he thinks too much of himself and
believes that he knows better than the gods.
Cocteau s Oedipus lacks wisdom and behaves in a silly manner. The Infernal Machine presents
Cocteau s vision of what transpired between Oedipus and the Sphinx. In this version, the sphinx
blindly chooses Oedipus to be Thebes savior and even answers the riddle for him. She picks him
because she has a crush on him and is bored with her job. This Oedipus becomes king out of luck and
rules very much like a child. All this Oedipus strives for is action, adventure. (Cocteau, Infernal
Machine, p.45) Even the Sphinx says, The fool! He understood nothing. (Cocteau, Infernal Machine,
p. 53) Of course, by not understanding what transpired with the sphinx, Cocteau s Oedipus believes
himself to be a genius and an able ruler. Of course he can not
even make it through his nightmares without the support of Jocasta, his wife/mother.
lt;block quote gt;OEDIPUS. Help! Here! Come here! Anybody! Help me!
JOCASTA. What is it, my darling? Oedipus, I was fast sleep.
She shakes him.
Wake up!
OEDIPUS. No! Oh, no! Please! Mercy!
JOCASTA. It s all right, my darling. It was a dream.

Early Activities In Europe
The early activities in Europe are considered to be based on physical activity and mental intelligence
and to have existed before any organized sports, games or activities. Games have been a very
important part of the American society since the earliest days. Children played games throughout the
day to keep them occupied, and adults participated in games, sports, and other activities. There were
many different types of games, sports, and pastimes available to the people of all ages.
Children played games such as blind man s buff, also known as hoodman blind. This game required
the players to pick a player to be it . The player who was it had to cover their eyes with a hood that is
worn backwards so that the opening of the hood is at the back of the head. Another game the kids
played is called Cross and Pile. This game required two players and each player had to have a coin.

Archery was a big sport in this time. Archery came with an obvious military overtone, and it is later
called the national sport of medieval Europe. The weapon that most people chose to use was a
longbow, the weapon used in wars in Europe at this time, because it was easier and was quicker to
reload and shoot. There was also an extreme emphasis on hunting. Hunting requires a large amount of
physical activity for not only the hunters, but also the animals that they hunt with. The hunters
believed this sport to be a way to train for war. If there was no immediate war, hunting served as a
way for the military elite to show off. Hunting in a royal forest was reserved for only the king and
those people that he hand chose and deemed eligible to participate. The medieval people also
participated in winter games. Skating on frozen lakes was not uncommon for them. The skaters used
poles to help keep them going across these icy

EU membership has been regarded as one of the significant tools for achieving this goal in Turkey. In this context, Turkey has given great importance to its relations with EU integration institutions. The long history of relations starting with the signing of the Ankara Agreement on 12 September 1963 between Turkey and the European Economic Community (EEC) is an evident indication of this importance. Turkey, one of the founding members of the United Nations and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and a member of NATO since 1952, showed its willingness to continue to increase its role in the different areas of Western policy. With the signing of the Ankara Agreement, trade began to be liberalized, followed by the completion of the Customs Union by the end of 1995. since the signing of Ankara Agreement, there have been ups and downs in the relations between Turkey and EU integration institutions. Married to a Japanese corporal, Mardiyah had been deceived into taking a job as a laundry lady, which turned out to truly be a job where she was forced into sexual services, wash clothes, and help build roads. In her statement she says, I didn t even know I was pregnant, but when I saw the bleeding, I was relieved. At least I was spared the shame of having a Japanese child. Umi, from Sukabumi was abducted at 13 years old with her two sisters to a brothel by Japanese soldiers. For 5 long months, her sisters were constantly abused, beaten and sexually attacked, until their internal injuries eventually killed them. In part of her statement she states, My sisters were very pretty. The Japanese lined up for them. They protected me, because I was so young. They would say: Leave my little sister alone, just take me. I was taken, too, but not so badly. I still was able to have children. Once she had reached freedom at the end of the war, Umi married a family member because no one else wanted her. • 4. The Can Not Be Interpreted By Us And The World As the world around us continues to strive to advance technology and gather big data to try to feed their unquenchable thirst for knowledge, we are finding ourselves losing our true and raw selves as human beings. We believe that by filling our head with more information, we are invincible and above all. Our egos are inflating and the kindness in humankind is depleting as people only do things for their own best interest. What these hungry minds fail to realize is that the world is not a fixed, solid array of objects, out there, for it cannot be fully separated from our perception of t, it shifts under our gaze, it interacts with us, and the knowledge that it yields has to be interpreted by us (364). Because the knowledge of the world has to be interpreted by us and the world around us is continually changing, who is to say that you can have all of the information in the world? I believe that it is false hope, even fantasy, for humans to believe that they could ever be all knowing. It is extremely difficult for those trying to become all knowing to recognize that our knowledge is merely confined within a certain tolerance (365). This is perfectly represented by Bronowski when he says: We know that we cannot ask the world to be exact, if an object ( a familiar face, for example) had to be exactly the same before we recognized it, we would never recognize it from one day to the next. We recognize the object to be the same because it is much the same; it is never exactly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Equality Of Sports And Gender Equality In Sports Women opportunities for competitive sports were very limited, their sport was considered recreational rather than an actual sport, due to the fact that they were not competitive and there were less rules. Title IX required society to acknowledge women sports on an equal term to that of men. There are students participating in university sports, and these programs make an excessive amount of money from selling the teams merchandise and tickets. There are apparel lines primarily based on athletic wear, advertisements that consist of athletes promoting all kinds of things to get people to buy the company s stuff etc. Although, professional leagues do offer opportunities to female athletes, the treatment however, of a female athlete in society today is different in comparison of their male counterparts when it comes to media, attendance, endorsements, and wages. Equality Throughout history, women were to be seen as ladylike and to be seen as anything else. If they were to work out, it would only be very little so they won t get muscular because it was seen as masculinity. It took a couple of years for women to be in on the equality of sports. Women went through hardships to be treated equally and to be accepted and to be seen as a college and/or professional athlete. In 1972, Congress passes Title IX for the Education Amendments Act. The operation and organisation of business activity in New Zealand has been affected by this changing economy. All aspects of the New Zealand Government have been altered. The reason for this change was to improve the performance by being more efficient. The key reforms are privatisation and corporatisation of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and restructuring government agencies. • 11. Swot Analysis Of Subway Abstract One of my first jobs a young adult was as a store manager for a local Subway restaurant. Subway is a franchise that has restaurants all over the United States and in several other countries. They operate the organization under a stable culture. I will use my personal experience and the five signs of organizational culture which include mission statement, stories and language, physical layout, rules and policies, and rituals to explain for the organization conveys its organizational culture. Mission Statement Subway s mission statement is Delight every customer, so they want to tell their friends with great value through fresh, delicious, made to order sandwiches, and an exceptional experience (Farfan, 2017). When reviewing the mission statement we can see that the customer service and value is of great importance to the organization. The mission statement reflects that the business is focused on attention to details and creating an experience that will keep customers coming back and referring others to their stores. The mission statement conveys to both the employees and the customers that they will have a stable culture. It does so by so by placing emphasis on quality control and constance. A stable culture is reflected here because Subway will use certain formulas, rules, and strict policies to make sure the customer gets the same excellent service and product at all of its stores. Rituals While working for Subway I had the opportunity to visit several locations. There are not a lot of rituals within the organization. Rituals refer to repetitive activities within an organization that have symbolic meaning (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, 2012, P. 399). One ritual that is popular in most subway restaurants is a sandwich building speed test. After an employee had been employed for 90 days a manager would pick a sandwich off the menu and have the sandwich artist make it as fast as possible. The employee would be scored based on the time it took for them to assemble the sandwich, how closely they followed the build formula for that sandwich, proper length of the sandwich, and neatness of the product upon completion. This ritual reflects that stable culture in a way that this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The narrator feels forced to shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. The Burmese feel as if they should follow him to the elephant because they want to see if he will actually kill the elephant. However, from the narrator s perspective, he states, I had no intention of shooting the elephant I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary . In his mind, he wishes that the elephant will not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the narrator cannot turn back. Behind him, there was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute. It blocked the road for a long distance on either side . The villagers expect him to be brave enough to shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the villagers will laugh and mock him for being afraid to kill the elephant. The narrator knows that every white man s life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at . If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack of power over the Burmese. Therefore, he has no choice. Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. • 13. The Pros And Cons Of The Red Scare In the mid 1940 s America faced a kind of fear that many viewed at the time to be easily justified. The Red Scare effected many people and ruined many lives during this time. During the red scare people were black listed in Hollywood and were prevented from finding work. This is because the Red Scare was a point in time where there was widespread fear and government paranoia by a society or state, about a potential rise of communism, anarchism, or radical leftism. The black list came around from the idea that communists were trying to use Hollywood to influence the minds of the people and turn American citizens in to spies for the Russians. This was no easy time for many Americans, people not only abused whomever they didn t trust by creating claims that that they were communist with or without evidence. The first Hollywood blacklist was created on November 25, 1947. This was the day after ten writers and directors were cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify to the House Un American Activities Committee. The writer Dolton Trumbo was one of the individuals black listed and was sent to prison. • 14. The Mexican State Of Coahuila Y Tejas American settlement in Texas began with the encouragement of first the Spanish, and then Mexican, governments. In the summer of 1820 Moses Austin, a bankrupt 59 year old Missourian, asked Spanish authorities for a large Texas land tract which he would promote and sell to American pioneers. The request by Austin seemed preposterous. His background was that of a Philadelphia dry goods merchant, a Virginia mine operator, a Louisiana judge, and a Missouri banker. But early in 1821, the Spanish government gave him permission to settle 300 families in Texas. Spain welcomed the Americans for two reasons to provide a buffer against illegal U.S. settlers, who were creating problems in east Texas even before the grant was made to Austin, and to help develop the land, since only 3,500 native Mexicans had settled in Texas which was part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Texas or Tejas as the Mexicans called it had technically been a part of the Spanish empire since the 17th century. However, even as late as the 1820s, there were only about 3,000 Spanish Mexican settlers in Texas, and Mexico City s hold on the territory was tenuous at best. After winning its own independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico welcomed large numbers of Anglo American immigrants into Texas in the hopes they would become loyal Mexican citizens and keep the territory from falling into the hands of the United States. To this end, the public school system in America has undergone many reforms. One of which has been charter schools. Charter schools are independent public schools of choice working under the auspices of a charter and not governed by the board of education. The charter can be written by parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, educational businesses, etc. It determines the school s guiding principles, management and accountability systems. The state approves the charter and provides funding for the school. Families choose these schools for their children. ( Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Charter schools differ from traditional public schools on three basic principles: accountability, choice and autonomy. Charter schools are held accountable for their ability to educate students, management of finances and handle operations. If they do not meet the guidelines established by the charter they are closed. They give families a choice as to what school their children will attend. Finally, charter schools have more autonomy than traditional public schools. They are able to make their own decisions regarding curriculum and school governance and can focus on academic achievement instead of bureaucracy. Victims of child abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, often feel shame and guilt associated with these experiences. These emotions can also increase the likelihood of suicidal ideation. Many victims of ill treatment feel that they are worthless or perceive themselves to be failures which lead to feelings of hopelessness and suicidal tendencies. Some researchers even suggest that feelings of hopelessness rather than depression are a better indicator of a potential suicide involving a teenager. Feeling hopeless, therefore, is an important risk factor when dealing with teenage suicide (Cornette 3). Teenagers who become alcohol dependent are at an increased risk of premature death. Town Hall By Michelle Malkin Summary Even though Michelle Malkin, a republican columnist for Town Hall, is for Trump and is obviously happy he will be President, the one thing she is totally against is millenials and the fact that they are going to be able to continuously be on their parent s insurance plan until 26. She uses humor, sarcasm, and evidence to prove a point in this article that preserving this plan is harming society instead of helping it. Throughout the entire article, her voice was very strong and evident on how she felt about this topic. She explains her points well by using strong language. Thinking that just because you don t have to work since you are under 26 and quit your job to do more meaningful things, that is not necessarily considered a good, productive thing. But being one, a millennial that is, I also see the other side of the argument. I believe that we can be the most productive when we are passionate about something and the idea that non millennials have little to no faith in what we can accomplish has a very negative outcome in what we then actually do. We are very proud of who we are for the most part, and that may just be part of our generation s view on how life works, but generalizing every single child under 26 or 31 to say that they are not the most motivated and all we want is free stuff and to not have to work is not true. • 26. What Are The Difference Between Yin And Yang And Taoism Chinese culture is largely surrounded by the idea of balance. We see this in Yin and Yang, and a balance between light and dark, or tall and short. While the Americanized version of this concept is the difference between the two, the original concept looks at how yin and yang balance each other and work together. This idea of balance is integrated in the idea of the five seasons and the elements that represent those seasons. The five elements are also related to Taoism in many ways. Yin and Yang is also part of the Chinese world creation myth. They believed that there was Wu Chi and then there was Tai Chi, or nothing and then something. That something was Yin and Yang, or in balance. For example When people find one thing beautiful another consequently becomes ugly. (Tzu, Pg.2) While this is explaining Taoism, it also incompases the idea of Yin and Yang and how they complement each other creating balance. From this something the World was born and Taoism came into being. Taoism is the idea of man when he was connected to the earth and all it s creatures. This was known as The age of perfect Virtue. ((Hoff, Pg.20). This idea was was originally introduced by Chuang Tse who was a Chinese philosopher in around the 4th century B.C.E. He said In the Age of Perfect Virtue, men lived among the animals and birds as members of one large family. There were no distinctions between superior and Inferior to separate one man or species from another. All retained their natural virtue and lived in the state of pure simplicity... We were once able to communicate with the creatures of the earth, but then man became greedy and was cast out by the creatures losing its connections with the beings. We became independent and killed animals for food. Some still remember our connection to nature and teach it to those around them. From this came practices such as maintaining that balance through the five seasons. The five seasons are spring, summer, late summer, autumn, and winter correspond with the five elements and each has its own things that are unique to it. The idea of the five elements originally came from the idea of yin and yang. The idea of how natural elements interact to create a balance. Ancient Chinese medical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Corruption Of Power In Macbeth Power gives people the ability to control and influence. It is held and used in many ways, significant and insignificant, for justice, mercy or desire. Because of its ability to give people what they want, power tempts people into doing the unthinkable in order to acquire it. Power itself is uncorrupted, only tainted and weaponised by those who hold it. In Shakespeare s Macbeth and Suzanne Collins Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part Two, manipulation and suggestion are shown to corrupt power and contribute to its use in the name of evil. Through a comparison of literary devices in Macbeth and Mockingjay Part Two , humanity s corruption of power will be explored and unveiled In Macbeth manipulation is a tool for lady Macbeth to tempt Macbeth into doing evil to gain power. Derogatory language in the line and live a coward in thine on esteem reveals lady Macbeth s attempt to manipulate her husband through his own ego. Macbeth at the beginning of the play is a man who takes pride in bravery. Through referring to him as the opposite of brave for not wanting to murder Duncan, she is using his ego to lead him into doing what she wants. By manipulating Macbeth s ego, she gains power over him, as well as the whole of Scotland after Duncan s murder. Using manipulation to gain power over someone and tempt them into murder is not unique to Macbeth In Mockingjay, President Snow manipulates Katniss into killing coin, gaining power over her decisions through suggestion. Repetition in the line I ve been watching you, and you me emphasises Snow s self perceived similarity to Katniss in that they were both distracted with each other while a common enemy was in power. Snow suggesting that Katniss is powerless under somebody who is evil causes her to seek justice against her oppressor and turn her attention away from Snow. She hadn t thought of Coin as an enemy who should not have power until it was suggested to her. The Turn Of The Screw Analysis The Turn of the Screw is one of the most controversial works in literature and the text has provoked a variety of critical interpretations from its publication in 1898. In this novel, the governess tells her experience with two apparitions that no one but she could see. And the governess accuses the ghosts of servants for corrupting the children, Miles and Flora. Critics concerning about the truth of the story are divided two basic camps based on their acceptance or rejection of the governess s credibility as a storyteller. Some critics believe that the ghosts are real and the governess is a rational and credible narrator, while the others believe that the ghosts are hallucinations of the governess and regard the governess as an incredible and mentally abnormal narrator. Also, we could speculate the author s intention on the basis of his life experience and other works of Henry James. This essay will examine the reliability of the governess on the basis of the text and interpret Henry James s intention on the basis of other sources. The critics from psychanalytic perspective claim that the existence of ghosts is the governess s hysterical delusion. To correct this, that number is multiplied by 0.5 to get the correct value of 3.64*10^ 5. This new number is what was used in the equation c1v1=c2v2. • 42. Analysis Of The Precession Of Simulacra Introduction Lee Harvey Oswald. The name may conjure up specific memories of a living, breathing man for those who knew him; but, for the general public, Lee Harvey Oswald was and will always be a scarecrow of patched together media images and texts. This is due to the fact that our only access to Oswald is through texts. To quote Lentricchia, Oswald is a person of, by, and for the image (2). Image, here, can be understood as any textual representation of Oswald. In Libra, DeLillo goes even further by portraying the living Oswald as a fragmented figure whose identity is already a pastiche of texts and images that he has consumed. In his landmark essay, The Precession of Simulacra, Baudrillard warns that [s]imulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being, or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal (par. 1). Through his consumption of texts, Oswald constructs an identity without substance or reality: a hyperreal identity. Baudrillard cites a Borges tale about a ruler who commissions a map the same size as his territory. After the empire falls, the remnants of the map are still rotting away in the deserts. He believes that this story is helpful in describing what he means by the precession of simulacra, and he alters the story, saying, The territory no longer precedes the map, nor does it survive it. It is the real, and not the map, whose vestiges persist here and there in the deserts (par. 1). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Consequences Of The European Age Of Exploration The motives, attitudes, and consequences of the European age of exploration and conquest differed from place to place across Europe, starting from the want for power, ending with many consequences, both good and bad, and many mixed views and attitudes to exploration. The European age of Exploration started for a large variety of reasons: to find a sea route to the spices of Asia, to create and control a greater empire, to expand their knowledge of the world, to spread their religion, and to find different precious metals and stones. A great majority of Europe was encouraged by this age and supported the action of exploration. Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain are a great example of being motivated by the idea of power. They wanted their country to grow and become a bigger empire, which is supported by their promises to Christopher Columbus (Doc 1). These promises encouraged Columbus to start exploring the world, and he eventually came across the New World. Here his religious motivations moved him to try and convert any Indian natives to Christianity and believed that for him to do this, he must trade with them in peace. However, this peace did not last very long and ended in a large disagreements and hostility between the two (Doc 2). Another motivation of the Spanish was said by Queen Isabella, before her death when she said, Our principal intention, in soliciting from Pope Alexander VI the concession of the lands discovered and to be discovered was to convert their peoples to our holy Catholic faith... (Doc 4). Her statement confirmed that her main motive for exploration was to spread her Catholic faith. This motivation influenced the positive views of the common people. They viewed the New World as a new start to their life and that it offers new opportunities to them (Doc 3). The different motivations of exploration lead to different attitudes towards the action, some positive, thinking that exploration was beneficial, and some negative, thinking that the treatment of the Native Americans were too unfair. Bartolome de las Casas, an ex conquistador, who converted to a monk, had different views of the motives of the Spanish. He viewed Isabella and Ferdinand s motives as greedy and that the ... Where others only want to see a show or a movie, I have always wanted to be behind the scenes in the creation of the art. Being behind the scene and being involved in the creation of the film has always fascinated me. When I was a in 3rd grade I remember watching the Golden Girls. One Saturday morning, I turned to Lifetime, and there was an elderly lady who was so short and cute, I just could not turn the channel. The woman s name was Sophia and she made me laugh from the time I had started watching the TV show until it had gone off. That day Lifetime was running a marathon of the Golden Girls; those four ladies made me giggle, and smile. So it was then that I started to wonder about who is behind the TV shows and movies, because I saw myself being that person. At that time I did not know about a producer or film maker all that I knew is that I wanted to become a part of tv shows. The Golden Girls made me want to have my own TV series that was just as funny, and that would make people laugh just as I had done when I watched it. I began carrying a notebook and a pen everywhere I would go. I would jot down funny lines, and different ideas for scripts for a movie or a TV series. I then realized that I wanted to become a screenwriter and a film producer. As a screenwriter, I want to create TV series that brings joy and comfort to all people, no matter what. Unfortunately, he thinks too much of himself and believes that he knows better than the gods. Cocteau s Oedipus lacks wisdom and behaves in a silly manner. The Infernal Machine presents Cocteau s vision of what transpired between Oedipus and the Sphinx. In this version, the sphinx blindly chooses Oedipus to be Thebes savior and even answers the riddle for him. She picks him because she has a crush on him and is bored with her job. This Oedipus becomes king out of luck and rules very much like a child. All this Oedipus strives for is action, adventure. (Cocteau, Infernal Machine, p.45) Even the Sphinx says, The fool! He understood nothing. (Cocteau, Infernal Machine, p. 53) Of course, by not understanding what transpired with the sphinx, Cocteau s Oedipus believes himself to be a genius and an able ruler. Of course he can not even make it through his nightmares without the support of Jocasta, his wife/mother. lt;block quote gt;OEDIPUS. Help! Here! Come here! Anybody! Help me! JOCASTA.
