Black Identity And Missing Identity
Boo! Ghosts are the most popular halloween costumes with children. Perhaps the popularity comes
from the idea that children like hiding their true identity, a fascination that will continue into
adulthood. In Native Guard, Natasha Trethewey is a half white and half black woman who has trouble
incorporating her black heritage into her life therefore missing a piece of her identity. In Heart of
Darkness by Joseph Conrad, characters described as a phantom or shade indicate missing or different
identities. In The Circle by Dave Eggers, the employees live through what the circle tells and have no
original ideas which stems from their missing identity. them Ghosts are the soul of a once living
person, but they are incomplete in that they are missing emotions or major characteristics of a human.
Because of these missing pieces, ghosts represent missing identity.
In Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey, the poet has a difficult time letting both her white father and
black mothers culture into her life and her black culture is described as ghostlike because the black
culture is the missing part of her true identity. The Civil War divided the United States which most
people try to forget. Although Americans would like to pretend that slavery and inequality never
happened in the United States, the unjust actions continue as a part of history and is still represented
with the fields of cotton, hallowed ground as slave legend goes each boll holding the ghosts of
generations according

Economic Policy Change in Soviet Union From 1941 to 1986...
Economic Policy Change in Soviet Union From 1941 to 1986 The period 1941 1986 saw little change
in the Russian economy, although attempts were made at reform by Khrushchev, for example, with his
Virgin Lands scheme. I believe that economic policy did not change between the years 1941 1986 but
the change was often quickly reversed and change was not carried out to a great enough extent to have
any significant bearing on the development of the Russian economy. Russia was almost destroyed by
the efforts needed to sustain a war. Even though the first, second and third Five Year Plans had been
heavily concentrated on the heavy industries such as coal and steel, which proved to be ... Show more

The need for labour and troops was intense and between 1941 and 1944 the gulag population
decreased by two fifths. Able bodied men were conscripted from the collectives and women were left
to care for the farms. Grain production fell from 95 million tons in 1940 to 30 million tons in 1942.
This was a huge drop, and famine was common, particularly in the Ukraine and Siberia, where loss of
life was most severe. The more relaxed attitude of Stalin during the wars years had nurtured a belief
that life would be easier and less repressed after the war. However, this proved not to be the case. The
Fourth Five Year Plan was intended to restore Russia s pre war reputation as an industrial power.
Industrial production recovered quickly, mainly through the use of over 2 million slave labourers. The
rigid centralised economy imposed by Stalin was useful in this instance as it became easier to organise
workers and factories. The Fifth Five Year Plan was concentrated slightly more on the consumer
industries, helping to improve living conditions in Russia. The relaxation of Stalinist policy meant that
although rigid central control was retained, Party power was weakened in the countryside. When
Khrushchev came to power in 1953, he inherited the rigid centralised economy symbolic with the
Stalinist era. In 1956

Hyperbole In Macbeth
Literature is strongly admired for its plethora of techniques that enhance the meaning of its creations.
A motif is a literary technique which is a recurring symbol or idea that establishes the theme or central
focus. William Shakespeare, highly renowned English playwright, has written many plays with unique
motifs that define each play significantly. One of his most famous playwrights is Macbeth, a tragic
story about a brave Scottish general named Macbeth that receives a prophecy that he will one day be
the King of Scotland. Macbeth does everything in his dwindling power to ensure the legitimacy of the
crown, regardless of the unfortunate consequences that plummet his soul into the depths of darkness
and despair. Throughout the play, Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Macbeth returns from completing the forsaken deed, he is in shock and awe of the huge crime
he recently committed. He says, Will all great Neptune s ocean wash this blood/ Clean from my hand?
No, this my hand will rather/ The multitudinous seas incarnadine,/Making the green one red (2.2. 78
81). The hyperbole helps emphasize the irrevocable task that Macbeth just did. He s saying that there
is not enough water in the world to wash or clean himself of the blood. There is no way for him to get
rid of the blood on his hands. He s also saying that everything he touches henceforth will inevitably be
tainted by this blood. Within the hyperbole, Macbeth alludes to Neptune, the Roman god of the seas.
This shows that not even the water from the god who blesses and protects the seas and water as a
whole will be able to wash away his sins and crimes. Blood in this scene represents the extensive guilt
that Macbeth feels for killing King Duncan. Macbeth will never be able to return to his true self, the
blood will always remain on his hands, and he will forever be haunted with this. By stating that he can
change the color of the ocean to red shows how greatly this has affected Macbeth and the huge amount
of guilt that he now has. This is the first murderous crime that Macbeth commits for the crown, and
the guilt from it continues to haunt him as he plots to kill others that would pose

Essay on Gang Reduction Program
In 2003 as a response to communities with a large amount and growing number of youth gangs the
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a branch of the U.S. Department of
Justice, initiated the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The
formation of gangs is seen as a response to system failures and community dysfunction. As a result,
one of OJJPD s anti gang initiatives is to make communities safer and have a pro social environment
(U.S. Department of Justice 2008). Furthermore, OJJDP plans to provide economic and social
opportunities that gangs often promise to new recruits which are often obtained in an illegal and

The OJJDP has created a comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated program by incorporating a wide

The Legalization Of Marijuana
This proposal would eliminate marijuana from the Control Substance Act and it would no longer be
categorized as a Schedule 1 substance. The proposal would also require a federal permit for growing
and distributing marijuana within state and national borders. The last aspect of the proposal would
require for marijuana to be regulated exactly like alcohol by the Food and Drug Administration as well
as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabaco, Firearms, and Explosives. Both of these proposals are probable
options for the United States, but the key question they must answer is: Should marijuana be a
national issue or a states issue? When discussing current marijuana policy they are certain rules put in

All of these factors cause a negative reaction by the public because they begin to feel untrustworthy of
their national government and it makes even more difficult to enforce these rules. The United States
must change their marijuana policy (rules) to something that utilizes proper scientific research; so the
public can feel that the rules put in place have some legitimacy. Even if they don t completely agree
with the policy, they will have to at least perceive the law in a more positive light. One example is the
restriction of texting while you drive; there is a portion of the public that doesn t agree with this
policy, but at the very least they are able to view the legitimacy of it because of the proper research
that is utilized. So the national government should ask itself, if their current marijuana policy has a
level of legitimacy? At the very least another question that could be asked is whether or not we have
the natural right to have access to medical marijuana. Stone discusses normative rights or rights that
cannot be given to you by the government, instead they come from religion, ideology, or natural law.
In the United States we have the unalienable rights, which consists of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. If this holds to be true, then the United States should not be allowed to

From mutants to aliens, superhumans and demigods, the idea of a hero has been an immense subject

Even though the definition of hero has changed drastically over the years, characters in The Odyssey,
an epic that describes the journey of Odysseus trying to return to his home, Troy, exhibit traits that can
apply to both the ancient and modern definition of a hero. The main character, Odysseus, isn t the only
one. For example, after being stuck on an island due to a storm, Odysseus and his crew are faced with
a decision to either starve, or kill the sun god s (Helios) cattle. One of Odysseus first mates,
Eurylochus, was thinking about how that would affect the entire crew. After weighing the pros and
cons, he stated: Comrades, he said, All deaths are hateful to us, mortal wretches, but famine is the
most pitiful, the worst end that a man can come to. Will you fight it? (879 83). Contemplating
consequences, Eurylochus then decided that they would eat the cattle and suffer the wrath. The quote
shows that Eurylochus was thinking about his crew, and was deciding on the best possible course of
action for him and his men. He stated that he and his comrades would rather die from the gods than to
suffer through famine. Consequently, his actions proved heroic the first thing he thought of was how it
would affect him and his crew. Then he put into action what he thought

Essay on The Effect of Consumer Culture on Education
The Effect of Consumer Culture on Education Consumer culture has without a doubt affected my
education. Education involves many things we value, and much of what we value has been bought.
Whether it be the calculators we use in math class or the texts we read in English, commodities are

you are classified in some way; after all if people hear what you have to say they can form an opinion

I agree with Edmundson to some degree. Yes, consumer culture definitely affects the way most of us
see ourselves and want to be seen by others. After all, Enthusiasm…quickly looks absurd. The form
of character that s most appealing on TV is calmly self interested though never greedy, attuned to the
conventions, and ironic. This definitely resembles the character that I personally find desirable, and I
imagine many other people feel the same way. But I believe there is a point when people stop trying to
conform to an image because it is too much work, but Edmundson concludes that people are
constantly . I am noticing this more now that I am in college. In high school it seemed like more
people were stuck between being cool and being unique, not sure themselves which they wanted to be.
Now it seems those who are unique by nature stop trying to be like the normal and show their true
colors. I imagine this is true in the class room as well. Though some people may not talk a lot in the
classroom, I believe that the professor need only to read their papers

On Saturday October 28th, 2017 the St.Mary s Syrian Orthodox Church of Washington D.C. hosted
their yearly Family Night event. This event was created by the members of the church in order to
spread awareness of the talent and overall culture of our community. Although there was a slight delay
for the event, the performances throughout was very entertaining and informative. It ranged from
dances, songs, to speeches and minor lectures about growing issues in our society today. It started off
with many of the youth showing off their talent mainly through art forms such as singing and dancing
to cultural and religious songs. I myself assisted with the emcees of the night and partook in the event
by acting as Jesus for a skit and submitting a short film alongside friends that underscored the
situation of how a Grandmother from India would interpret the lifestyle in America. The special talent
of all our youth closed with a young boy performing his magic act that wow d the crowd. After the
acts, the remainder of Family Night included a series of speeches and lectures from our Priest to other
older youth members that discussed growing issues in the world and how we can act to resolve these

Summary Of Princess Alice Is Watching You

belief in an invisible person inhibits cheating by Jared Piazza, Jesse Bering, and Gordon Ingram the
experimenters describe an experiment to test the prediction that children would be less likely to cheat
if there is an invisible person watching them. Within this experiment there were 2 children groups, one
group was of 39 children between the ages of five and six. While the other group consisted of 29
children with the age of eight or nine. One of the six year olds was omitted from the study due to the
fact he could not comprehend the task at hand. Within this experiment the children were asked to
complete a task and were told either a) they were in the presence of a watchful invisible person, b)
they were being observed by a real adult or c) they were unsupervised. This was a three x two
factorial, with the three meaning condition while the two meaning age group. The experimenters
introduced both Princess Alice (invisible person) and the real observer as friendly. The game consisted
of children having to throw a Velcro ball at a target and get it to stick and if they completed a take they
received a prize. But the task was nearly impossible due to three rules the children had to follow.
These rules were placed to cause the children to cheat. The procedure they followed for the children

Marcergens are those bacteria responsible for plant tissue...
Marcergens are those bacteria responsible for plant tissue maceration resulting in total tissue collapse
(Gwyn 2007). Soft rot diseases of vegetable is the most characteristic symptom of tissue maceration in
plant which begins as small water soaked lesion, expands and intensifies until the tissue turns soft and
watery. Apparently, the outer surface of the diseased plant might stay unbroken, while tanned and
depressed, or enclosed in an exuding bacterial mucus layer. Foul smells are common owing to the
discharge of explosive complexes through tissue degradation. Best bacterial growth follows after plant
cell lysis in these diseases. Soft rotting bacteria are distinguished for the speed at which they stimulate

These macergens infect and destroy plant tissues both pre and postharvest and this species causes the
greatest damage to harvested vegetables (Amy 2007). There is need to ensure a continuous cold chain
from immediately postharvest to retail to successfully manage this ubiquitous spoilage bacterium that
only thrive well at temperatures of 20°C and above. The fluorescent Pseudomonads (i.e. P. fluorescens
and P. viridiflava) can macerate plant parenchymatous tissues at a temperature below 4°C, this cause
for high occurrence of these bacteria on decayed vegetables both at wholesale and retail markets.
These soft rotting fluorescent Pseudomonads and Erwinia, therefore become the major threat to
commercial fresh product operations and fresh vegetables precisely, from the farm to retail and
wholesale outlets. However, there are currently no commercial agents available specifically for
controlling soft rot (Dong et al. 2004; Latour et al. 2008). Despite advances in vegetable production
and diseases management, many challenges face growers of vegetables, out of which the major one is
the damage caused by macergens (Pérombelon 2002). Macergens damage the tissues of vegetable
thereby reducing the quality, yields and shelf life and consumer satisfaction of these plants. They
usually cause great economic losses due to

Igbo Women In Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart
Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart, depicted the culture of the Igbo as well as the roles that men and
women held within the traditional Igbo society. Women were primarily known as the weaker sex ,
therefore they were considered to be submissive and viewed as property among the Igbo clan. Unlike
women, Igbo men were expected to be aggressive, gain individual titles and to provide order in the
clan. Within the Igbo society, women were expected to be submissive toward men, especially their
husbands. When women failed to provide for their husbands, they were disrespected and abused. For
example, Okonkwo s youngest wife did not return home at the correct time to cook the afternoon
meal, which caused him to become angered. He walked back to his obi to await Ojiugo s return. And
when she returned he beat her very heavily (29). I believe the beatings were executed as a way for
men to show their dominance toward women, which led Igbo women to fear the power that their
husbands held within society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

would ve known that this would ve been my last real talk with my brother, I would ve said more. As I
left the tower I looked around the city and took a longer walk home, all the streets I spent most of my
life around that had always been bustling with people, merchants, children and occasional rabbis from
the temple. Now the streets and homes were left empty and barren. A cold chill went down my spine
and I felt troubled to my bones. I rushed home at the weird feeling, to be met with a very, very
enthusiastic wife. Though her name meant brightness she acted as a rain cloud most of the time. She

the stream dries up and fire comes. This scared many people but I loved this about her. I walked closer

beautiful necklace. She was putting out clothes out to dry, she looked up at me and glared. So did you

Coal fuel, which accounts for the peak of popularity in the late 19th early 20th century. Then the

20th century, coal gave way to palm oil, which in turn is in danger of being supplanted in the 21st
century alternative sources of fuel and natural gas. However, nevertheless, coal to this day is strategic

Compare And Contrast Country And Rap Music
As many people know, country and rap music are the most renowned genres of music in today s
world. Both genres are opposites of each other, but they both are on the edges of mainstream. Country
and rap music may stand alone and share binary oppositions such as lifestyles, however rap culture
has influenced country music in today s world which can be seen through the lyrics. In the book
Religion in Hip Hop , Anthony B. Pinn and Monica R. Miller states, Now a global and transnational
phenomenon US based hip hop culture has become a vital component of political, religious,
educational, economic progress, relevance, and recognition. Hip hop is becoming the most vital
cultural forces to be known in the world. Many country artists and other artists are starting to focus
more on having hip hop in their music such as Florida Georgia Line. Hip hop has made its way up to
the top of music and has let listeners realize the culture of Hip hop and how rappers have been raised
up in life. Anthony points out, Over the past two decades, those who have taken up hip hop culture for
its intellectual weight and contributions to the cultural life and self understanding of the United States
have come from a variety of methodological disciples (Anthony Pinn). Hip hop has explored and
changed the cultural out looks on today s ideas. Even though Hip hop has become known for seeing
the cultural side of the ideas in their songs, country music has become a native art form. In Country

Outsiders In The Outsiders
Society has always been separated into stereotypical groups. Now a days, those groups are represented
by classes: lower, middle, and upper class. What about back then? During the 1960 s in Tulsa,
Oklahoma; high school student Susan Eloise Hinton (S.E Hinton) writes a book called The Outsiders
about the diverse groups in her town. Between the Greasers and the Socs, who are the real outsiders of
the story? Though the groups are separated into privileged and unfortunate, the outsiders are the ones
who unintentionally disassociate themselves with their social clicks by socializing with the opposite
side and treating them respectfully.
The Socs are prosperous teens whom live on the opulent side of town. They re thought to be smarter,
sophisticated and less emotional than the Greasers, as shown throughout parts of the story: There were
a lot of Socs in that class I get put into A classes because I m supposed to be smart and most of them
thought it was pretty funny. (Document B); You re more emotional. We re sophisticated ... (Document
C). The expectation of them is to be around other Socs, not to fraternize with someone who s
classified as lower than them. Cherry Valance, a Soc, is an outsider because she feels comfortable
talking with a younger Greaser named Ponyboy, who is also an outsider, about things she s never told
anyone before: She smiled at me. I never told anyone that. I think you re the first person I ve ever
really gotten through to. She was coming through to me all right, probably because I was a Greaser,
and younger; she didn t have to keep her guard up with me. (Document C). It appears that Socs are
invariably showing a fabricated persona to other Socs to exude their reputation: That was the truth.
Socs were always behind a wall of aloofness, careful not to let their real selves show through.
(Document C). The same is with another outsider, a Soc named Randy is afraid of being christened a
coward if he flees a fight and he d resent himself if he didn t walk away. Randy feels that violence isn
t going to solve any conflicts between the Greasers and the Socs, yet he thinks about staying for the
sake of his respectability: but what can I do? I m marked chicken if I punk out at the

While taking this Human Sexuality and Culture course, I was presented with a question during one of
the discussions: If you had a child with ambiguous genitalia, what would you do? How would you
raise him or her? I had to think about this question for a few moments; I had never even considered it!
I live in a culture where people fight for equality and others strive to be accepted because they may be
different but they are human beings, and I support them; yet, I never imagined how I would be as a
parent to such a person. How could I raise someone who would be so young and still have more

The Morality of Abortion. A very controversial issue in modern politics is a mother s right to abort

murder, and hold that it should be made illegal ; the other side, pro choice, includes those who believe
that a mother has a moral and legal right to choose to abort her pregnancy (Hock, 2016, p. 339). I have
debated the morality of abortion since I was old enough to comprehend what exactly it was. I have

times realizing the effects it may have on the mother. My reasoning for supporting pro life is based on
fetal development so early in the pregnancy. By only the tenth week of

The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter
According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we have
inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into the
apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire human race
would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever since, human
beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly manner. This is a
faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of Hester Prynne and the
Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives; though ... Show more

Questioning would have thrown their world into turmoil. They liked simple, written laws. Laws of the
heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even verbalized or written
in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not even considered. Hester s
sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of her soul. I read about Hester s
predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being true to herself a sin? But in the 17th
century in Puritan America, the individual did not create rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and
laws of society are needed to some extent in order to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the
business of government. Hester s sin should have been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes.
She could not escape societal laws, though, and her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed.
It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is
contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little daughter
Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet, in some
mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by others as a
devilish child, is perhaps a gift to Hester. Without Pearl,

The Influence Of Dragons On East Asian Culture
Dragons are prevalent in myths all across the world. Eastern countries in particular hold dragons in the
highest regard in their cultures. The dragons of East Asian legend have sweeping powers. They
breathe clouds, move the seasons, and control the waters of rivers, lakes, and seas. They are linked
with yang, the masculine principle of heat, light, and action, and opposed to yin, the feminine
principle of coolness, darkness, and repose. Dragons have been part of East Asian culture for more
than 4,000 years. In the religious traditions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, they have been
honored as sources of power and bringers of rain. (amnh.org)
Dragons hold more significance in China than nearly anywhere else in the world. They are usually
depicted as brightly colored snakes with legs that, in legend, can be as small as a garden snake or large
enough to connect heaven and earth. These dragons are connected to divine and auspicious powers
that typically control disasters related to water, such as floods or hurricanes. These powers make
dragons a symbol of strength and power among the Chinese people, enough so that ... Show more

My Best Friend In My Life
Everyone has that best friend they believe they will have forever, they plan out their future together,
but that can all come crashing down. That is what happened with Jason James and I. Jason was once
my best friend, practically a brother, we did everything together. I was always there for him, in the
times when he needed someone the most. Jason James suffered from depression, like me. Because I
knew exactly what he was going through, we became close. But there was always something off about
our friendship. It was always about him. One day I got a text from Jason saying he needed to get out
of the house and just talk. I, of course, sprang to action. I picked him up and we got ice cream and
talked. I let him talk through what was going on, and gave him the advice he needed. Then a couple
days later I was having a rough day, and I just wanted someone to talk to, I texted Jason hoping he
could help. He said he would come over, and be with me. But when he got there all he did was talk
about him. Everything I would say he would turn it around and make it about him. Although this did
not happen all the time, it did most often. Jason James was a negative influence on my life because our
friendship was only about him, he blamed me for every problem he faced, and he never truly cared.
My friendship with Jason James was always centered around him. I was the one who was constantly

Defining Nosql Database And Its Classification Essay
Introduction
The rapid growth in the world of technology has influenced the way we communicate, shop, learn, and
share information. The development of technology led database analysts and administrators to find
more convenient ways to store the big amount of data. Big data is known as expression in the tech
world. It is defined as a huge collection of data that cannot be managed by relational databases
(Moniruzzaman and Hossain 1). So, developers start to use non relational databases (NoSQL) to
arrange and store the Big data. In order to understand how developers solve the storing issue of the big
amount of data and provide systems that can sync data between multiple devices, we need to start with
a brief background of NoSQL databases to understand Couchbase system. The purpose of this paper is
to define NoSQL database, compare it with SQL database, define Couchbase and describe how
Couchbase is synchronizing data between multiple devices, especially Couchbase Mobile.
The outline of this paper consists of the following sections. Section 1 introduces NoSQL database and
its classifications. Section 2 gives a brief comparison between NoSQL database and SQL database.
Section 3 explains document oriented databases. Section 4 defines Couchbase. Section 5 describes
Couchbase Mobile and provides an example of its use in synchronizing data between multiple mobile
devices.

Alexander The Great Tactics Essay
Alexander the Great was one of the most prominent leaders on the battlefield. His war tactics and
strategies have led him to become the leader of the most powerful, largest empire in the ancient world
in the 300 s BCE. Alexander the Great used unique strategies shown in the battle of Tyre, Granicus
and Gaugamela to defeat The Persian Empire. The Persian Empire at the time controlled most of Asia,
Middle East and North Africa. #1 Body paragraph: Alexander the Great was a master at siege warfare
which preceded him to triumph in the Battle of Tyre in 332 BC. As Alexander the Great was heading

Near a small village of Gaugamela in present day Iraq, two powerful empires engaged in a battle;
Persia and Macedon. The Macedonian army was one fifth the size of Persia s. Alexander risked
everything on this one battle, if he wins the richest empire on the planet is his and if he loses 45,000
men will be slaughtered and Greece would be open to invasion. Alexander the Great was confident
and he did not care less. With his war tactics and strategies he knew he could pull out one of the most
fascinating victories of all time. Darius II had laid out his battle line in a tremendous challenge for his
opponents; two and half mile long. Alexander the Great was overlapped by a half a mile from each
side which made it possible for Darius s cavalry to go from both sides. Alexander the Great thought of
it as hard challenge but his complex tactics could not let him down. The Macedonian Phalanx was
probably the most potent weapon of war in the ancient world; 256 men arranged 16 across by 16 deep.
The spears were around 15 to 18 feet long. The Phalanx formation was deadly and overwhelming. The
Phalanx was arranged with the left side facing outward away from the battle expecting an attack from
the side. Running on foot are the cultists; Alexander the Great s light infantry. Cultists would be all
over the battlefield, they would have a variety of weapons. They used short range arrows, javelins and
sling shots. These weapons were important as they would hit high value targets such as the chariot
groups. The cultists was one of Alexander s key strategies to win the battle. Darius II released his
powerful weapon; the chariots. Alexander the Great knew it was coming, he taught his phalanx army a
brilliant tactic to defeat them. He taught his men to trap the chariot, it is called; the mousetrap. A horse
would never go towards a line of men holding sharp spears, so if you open

The Radical And The Republican
The Radical and the Republican Paper The Radical and the Republican by author James Oakes is an
account of two idols that conquest over struggle during a time of great crisis, solidified in a specialist
historian s expertise of various writings on abolitionism, Abraham Lincoln, and the Civil War era.
While Oakes is vigilant to dodge the evident dangers of hero worship, his compassion for both
Lincoln and Douglass is evident throughout. Oakes received the Lincoln Prize for his work on this
manuscript which was published in 2007. Oakes: an American historian, professor of history and
graduate school humanities at the City University of New York, teaches history courses on the
American Civil War and Reconstruction, Slavery, the Old South, Abolitionism and U.S. and World
History. Oakes taught previously at Princeton University and Northwestern University. Oakes keeps
the reader hooked at every turn of the page by switching back and forth between Abraham Lincoln s
(republican); who pledged to the democratic ethics of the Declaration of Independence, in trying to
attain a more perfect union, and his central role in progressing the cause of slave freedom, first by
issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, following by giving full support to a constitutional
amendment that would end slavery all together, and Fredrick Douglass (radical); who in turn began to
temper his ethical tyranny with his own brand of hardheaded realism, concluding with their well
known meetings in the White

Different Roles of Irony in Fussell Essay
Different Roles of Irony in Fussell
The excessive use of irony throughout World War I literature paints a colorful scheme of
thoughtfulness and style. Paul Fussell gives one explanation in The Great War and Modern Memory
by stating that the war itself is ironic because every war is worse than expected. Every war constitutes
an irony of situation because its means are so melodramatically disproportionate to its presumed ends
(7). Writers obviously realized the irony of war and in turn wrote in this style maybe not by intention,
but because it was inescapable. Providing a feeling of sorrow and pity seems to motivate Siegfried
Sassoon in his poem titled The Hero in which an officer tells a mother that her son was brave ... Show

Interestingly Owen uses irony when writing letters home to his mother. In Wilfred Owen: Collected
Letters he writes on 16 January 1917: Three quarters dead, then realizing the implications and irony he
corrected himself by writing #8230;I mean each of us ¾ dead #8230;(393) . Other examples of the
accidental use of irony exist throughout WWI literature I m sure.
Fussell argues that the use of irony comes from memory. He states that irony is a tool used to recollect
certain events that would otherwise go unnoticed . What assists #8230;recall is precisely the ironic
pattern which subsequent vision has laid over the events (Modern 30). Fussell uses Gunner Charles
Bricknall as an example of this phenomenon . Bricknall recalls seeing new troops standing along an
often shelled road and telling the recruits about the danger. Bricknall wrote Ho, what a disaster! We
had to go shooting lame horses, putting the dead to the side of the road, what a disaster, which could
have been avoid if only the officers had gone into action the hard way. That was something I shall
never forget (31). Fussell continues that A

Andrew Carnegie was an endeavor to impart another type of generosity in the independent moguls and
pioneers of the business world. He composed his paper in 1889, however from numerous points of
view, it is as yet important even in the 21st century. It is realized that when Andrew Carnegie passed
on in 1919, he had spent most his cash (more than $350 million) on helping the less favored social
gatherings and the rest of the $30 million was coordinated to different philanthropy associations.
Andrew Carnegie was an astute and shrewd businessperson. In this manner, he spent the most recent
years of his life paying back the cash he had gotten. The paper underneath will examine the

  • 2. Black Identity And Missing Identity Boo! Ghosts are the most popular halloween costumes with children. Perhaps the popularity comes from the idea that children like hiding their true identity, a fascination that will continue into adulthood. In Native Guard, Natasha Trethewey is a half white and half black woman who has trouble incorporating her black heritage into her life therefore missing a piece of her identity. In Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, characters described as a phantom or shade indicate missing or different identities. In The Circle by Dave Eggers, the employees live through what the circle tells and have no original ideas which stems from their missing identity. them Ghosts are the soul of a once living person, but they are incomplete in that they are missing emotions or major characteristics of a human. Because of these missing pieces, ghosts represent missing identity. In Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey, the poet has a difficult time letting both her white father and black mothers culture into her life and her black culture is described as ghostlike because the black culture is the missing part of her true identity. The Civil War divided the United States which most people try to forget. Although Americans would like to pretend that slavery and inequality never happened in the United States, the unjust actions continue as a part of history and is still represented with the fields of cotton, hallowed ground as slave legend goes each boll holding the ghosts of generations according ... • 3. Economic Policy Change in Soviet Union From 1941 to 1986... Economic Policy Change in Soviet Union From 1941 to 1986 The period 1941 1986 saw little change in the Russian economy, although attempts were made at reform by Khrushchev, for example, with his Virgin Lands scheme. I believe that economic policy did not change between the years 1941 1986 but the change was often quickly reversed and change was not carried out to a great enough extent to have any significant bearing on the development of the Russian economy. Russia was almost destroyed by the efforts needed to sustain a war. Even though the first, second and third Five Year Plans had been heavily concentrated on the heavy industries such as coal and steel, which proved to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The need for labour and troops was intense and between 1941 and 1944 the gulag population decreased by two fifths. Able bodied men were conscripted from the collectives and women were left to care for the farms. Grain production fell from 95 million tons in 1940 to 30 million tons in 1942. This was a huge drop, and famine was common, particularly in the Ukraine and Siberia, where loss of life was most severe. The more relaxed attitude of Stalin during the wars years had nurtured a belief that life would be easier and less repressed after the war. However, this proved not to be the case. The Fourth Five Year Plan was intended to restore Russia s pre war reputation as an industrial power. Industrial production recovered quickly, mainly through the use of over 2 million slave labourers. The rigid centralised economy imposed by Stalin was useful in this instance as it became easier to organise workers and factories. The Fifth Five Year Plan was concentrated slightly more on the consumer industries, helping to improve living conditions in Russia. The relaxation of Stalinist policy meant that although rigid central control was retained, Party power was weakened in the countryside. When Khrushchev came to power in 1953, he inherited the rigid centralised economy symbolic with the Stalinist era. In 1956 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hyperbole In Macbeth Literature is strongly admired for its plethora of techniques that enhance the meaning of its creations. A motif is a literary technique which is a recurring symbol or idea that establishes the theme or central focus. William Shakespeare, highly renowned English playwright, has written many plays with unique motifs that define each play significantly. One of his most famous playwrights is Macbeth, a tragic story about a brave Scottish general named Macbeth that receives a prophecy that he will one day be the King of Scotland. Macbeth does everything in his dwindling power to ensure the legitimacy of the crown, regardless of the unfortunate consequences that plummet his soul into the depths of darkness and despair. Throughout the play, Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Macbeth returns from completing the forsaken deed, he is in shock and awe of the huge crime he recently committed. He says, Will all great Neptune s ocean wash this blood/ Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather/ The multitudinous seas incarnadine,/Making the green one red (2.2. 78 81). The hyperbole helps emphasize the irrevocable task that Macbeth just did. He s saying that there is not enough water in the world to wash or clean himself of the blood. There is no way for him to get rid of the blood on his hands. He s also saying that everything he touches henceforth will inevitably be tainted by this blood. Within the hyperbole, Macbeth alludes to Neptune, the Roman god of the seas. This shows that not even the water from the god who blesses and protects the seas and water as a whole will be able to wash away his sins and crimes. Blood in this scene represents the extensive guilt that Macbeth feels for killing King Duncan. Macbeth will never be able to return to his true self, the blood will always remain on his hands, and he will forever be haunted with this. By stating that he can change the color of the ocean to red shows how greatly this has affected Macbeth and the huge amount of guilt that he now has. This is the first murderous crime that Macbeth commits for the crown, and the guilt from it continues to haunt him as he plots to kill others that would pose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Gang Reduction Program In 2003 as a response to communities with a large amount and growing number of youth gangs the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, initiated the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The formation of gangs is seen as a response to system failures and community dysfunction. As a result, one of OJJPD s anti gang initiatives is to make communities safer and have a pro social environment (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The OJJDP has created a comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated program by incorporating a wide range of research based interventions to tackle personal, family, and community factors that contribute to juvenile delinquency (U.S. Department of Justice 2010) (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The proposal would also require a federal permit for growing and distributing marijuana within state and national borders. The last aspect of the proposal would require for marijuana to be regulated exactly like alcohol by the Food and Drug Administration as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabaco, Firearms, and Explosives. All of these factors cause a negative reaction by the public because they begin to feel untrustworthy of their national government and it makes even more difficult to enforce these rules. The United States must change their marijuana policy (rules) to something that utilizes proper scientific research; so the public can feel that the rules put in place have some legitimacy. Even if they don t completely agree with the policy, they will have to at least perceive the law in a more positive light. One example is the restriction of texting while you drive; there is a portion of the public that doesn t agree with this policy, but at the very least they are able to view the legitimacy of it because of the proper research that is utilized. So the national government should ask itself, if their current marijuana policy has a level of legitimacy? At the very least another question that could be asked is whether or not we have the natural right to have access to medical marijuana. Stone discusses normative rights or rights that cannot be given to you by the government, instead they come from religion, ideology, or natural law. Even though the definition of hero has changed drastically over the years, characters in The Odyssey, an epic that describes the journey of Odysseus trying to return to his home, Troy, exhibit traits that can apply to both the ancient and modern definition of a hero. The main character, Odysseus, isn t the only one. For example, after being stuck on an island due to a storm, Odysseus and his crew are faced with a decision to either starve, or kill the sun god s (Helios) cattle. One of Odysseus first mates, Eurylochus, was thinking about how that would affect the entire crew. After weighing the pros and cons, he stated: Comrades, he said, All deaths are hateful to us, mortal wretches, but famine is the most pitiful, the worst end that a man can come to. Will you fight it? Within this experiment there were 2 children groups, one group was of 39 children between the ages of five and six. While the other group consisted of 29 children with the age of eight or nine. One of the six year olds was omitted from the study due to the fact he could not comprehend the task at hand. Soft rot diseases of vegetable is the most characteristic symptom of tissue maceration in plant which begins as small water soaked lesion, expands and intensifies until the tissue turns soft and watery. Apparently, the outer surface of the diseased plant might stay unbroken, while tanned and depressed, or enclosed in an exuding bacterial mucus layer. The fluorescent Pseudomonads (i.e. P. fluorescens and P. viridiflava) can macerate plant parenchymatous tissues at a temperature below 4°C, this cause for high occurrence of these bacteria on decayed vegetables both at wholesale and retail markets. Women were primarily known as the weaker sex , therefore they were considered to be submissive and viewed as property among the Igbo clan. Unlike women, Igbo men were expected to be aggressive, gain individual titles and to provide order in the clan. Within the Igbo society, women were expected to be submissive toward men, especially their husbands. When women failed to provide for their husbands, they were disrespected and abused. For example, Okonkwo s youngest wife did not return home at the correct time to cook the afternoon meal, which caused him to become angered. He walked back to his obi to await Ojiugo s return. What about back then? During the 1960 s in Tulsa, Oklahoma; high school student Susan Eloise Hinton (S.E Hinton) writes a book called The Outsiders about the diverse groups in her town. Between the Greasers and the Socs, who are the real outsiders of the story? Though the groups are separated into privileged and unfortunate, the outsiders are the ones who unintentionally disassociate themselves with their social clicks by socializing with the opposite side and treating them respectfully. The Socs are prosperous teens whom live on the opulent side of town. They re thought to be smarter, sophisticated and less emotional than the Greasers, as shown throughout parts of the story: There were a lot of Socs in that class I get put into A classes because I m supposed to be smart and most of them thought it was pretty funny. • 29. The Influence Of Dragons On East Asian Culture Dragons are prevalent in myths all across the world. Eastern countries in particular hold dragons in the highest regard in their cultures. The dragons of East Asian legend have sweeping powers. They breathe clouds, move the seasons, and control the waters of rivers, lakes, and seas. They are linked with yang, the masculine principle of heat, light, and action, and opposed to yin, the feminine principle of coolness, darkness, and repose. Dragons have been part of East Asian culture for more than 4,000 years. In the religious traditions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, they have been honored as sources of power and bringers of rain. (amnh.org) Dragons hold more significance in China than nearly anywhere else in the world. They are usually depicted as brightly colored snakes with legs that, in legend, can be as small as a garden snake or large enough to connect heaven and earth. These dragons are connected to divine and auspicious powers that typically control disasters related to water, such as floods or hurricanes. These powers make dragons a symbol of strength and power among the Chinese people, enough so that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end of his life, Beowulf went to fight a dragon which he killed and then died from his wounds. Other legends include St. George and the dragon, who rescued a young maiden that had been taken by a cruel and monstrous dragon, as well as many Arthurian legends. Over time these dragons became a symbol of treachery, danger, and the unknown in Europe. Unlike in Asia however, dragons were never as completely imbedded in the culture and minds of the people. Tolkien s works, particularly the Hobbit, brought focus back onto a legend that was beginning to fade. Now, modernly, dragons have become a staple of any work of fantasy. Assay Lab Report ADAM ANDERSON BIOLOGY SAE01 Experimental investigation into variable heat on Rennin enzyme acitivity and Protien from Milk. 1.1 Experiment on variable Heat effects on Enzyme activity reaction with Protien. Independent variables are the Rennin, Milk solution, and buffer solution. Also time of observations. Dependent variables are the temperature, being 4o, 20 25o, 35 40o, 55 60o and 80 85o. 1.2 I predict that the fastest reaction should be in the 35 40o sample, based on mammal inner core temperature. I predict the 4o sample will have minimal if any reaction and the 80 85o sample will have no reaction as the protien has been denatured by the heat. 1.3 The investigation is showing how enzymes work inside a mammal s stomach. That is what happened with Jason James and I. Jason was once my best friend, practically a brother, we did everything together. I was always there for him, in the times when he needed someone the most. Jason James suffered from depression, like me. Because I knew exactly what he was going through, we became close. But there was always something off about our friendship. It was always about him. One day I got a text from Jason saying he needed to get out of the house and just talk. I, of course, sprang to action. I picked him up and we got ice cream and talked. I let him talk through what was going on, and gave him the advice he needed. Then a couple days later I was having a rough day, and I just wanted someone to talk to, I texted Jason hoping he could help. He said he would come over, and be with me. But when he got there all he did was talk about him. Everything I would say he would turn it around and make it about him. Although this did not happen all the time, it did most often. Jason James was a negative influence on my life because our friendship was only about him, he blamed me for every problem he faced, and he never truly cared. My friendship with Jason James was always centered around him. I was the one who was constantly there for him when he needed me. • 33. Defining Nosql Database And Its Classification Essay Introduction The rapid growth in the world of technology has influenced the way we communicate, shop, learn, and share information. The development of technology led database analysts and administrators to find more convenient ways to store the big amount of data. Big data is known as expression in the tech world. It is defined as a huge collection of data that cannot be managed by relational databases (Moniruzzaman and Hossain 1). So, developers start to use non relational databases (NoSQL) to arrange and store the Big data. In order to understand how developers solve the storing issue of the big amount of data and provide systems that can sync data between multiple devices, we need to start with a brief background of NoSQL databases to understand Couchbase system. The purpose of this paper is to define NoSQL database, compare it with SQL database, define Couchbase and describe how Couchbase is synchronizing data between multiple devices, especially Couchbase Mobile. The outline of this paper consists of the following sections. Section 1 introduces NoSQL database and its classifications. Section 2 gives a brief comparison between NoSQL database and SQL database. Section 3 explains document oriented databases. Section 4 defines Couchbase. Section 5 describes Couchbase Mobile and provides an example of its use in synchronizing data between multiple mobile devices. The Macedonian army was one fifth the size of Persia s. Alexander risked everything on this one battle, if he wins the richest empire on the planet is his and if he loses 45,000 men will be slaughtered and Greece would be open to invasion. Alexander the Great was confident and he did not care less. With his war tactics and strategies he knew he could pull out one of the most fascinating victories of all time. Darius II had laid out his battle line in a tremendous challenge for his opponents; two and half mile long. Alexander the Great was overlapped by a half a mile from each side which made it possible for Darius s cavalry to go from both sides. Alexander the Great thought of it as hard challenge but his complex tactics could not let him down. The Macedonian Phalanx was probably the most potent weapon of war in the ancient world; 256 men arranged 16 across by 16 deep. The spears were around 15 to 18 feet long. The Phalanx formation was deadly and overwhelming. The Phalanx was arranged with the left side facing outward away from the battle expecting an attack from the side. Running on foot are the cultists; Alexander the Great s light infantry. Cultists would be all over the battlefield, they would have a variety of weapons. They used short range arrows, javelins and sling shots. These weapons were important as they would hit high value targets such as the chariot groups. The cultists was one of Alexander s key strategies to win the battle. Darius II released his powerful weapon; the chariots. Alexander the Great knew it was coming, he taught his phalanx army a brilliant tactic to defeat them. He taught his men to trap the chariot, it is called; the mousetrap. • 36. Different Roles of Irony in Fussell Essay Different Roles of Irony in Fussell The excessive use of irony throughout World War I literature paints a colorful scheme of thoughtfulness and style. Paul Fussell gives one explanation in The Great War and Modern Memory by stating that the war itself is ironic because every war is worse than expected. Every war constitutes an irony of situation because its means are so melodramatically disproportionate to its presumed ends (7). Writers obviously realized the irony of war and in turn wrote in this style maybe not by intention, but because it was inescapable. Providing a feeling of sorrow and pity seems to motivate Siegfried Sassoon in his poem titled The Hero in which an officer tells a mother that her son was brave ... In Wilfred Owen: Collected Letters he writes on 16 January 1917: Three quarters dead, then realizing the implications and irony he corrected himself by writing #8230;I mean each of us ¾ dead #8230;(393) . Other examples of the accidental use of irony exist throughout WWI literature I m sure. Fussell argues that the use of irony comes from memory. He states that irony is a tool used to recollect certain events that would otherwise go unnoticed . What assists #8230;recall is precisely the ironic pattern which subsequent vision has laid over the events (Modern 30). Fussell uses Gunner Charles Bricknall as an example of this phenomenon . Bricknall recalls seeing new troops standing along an often shelled road and telling the recruits about the danger. Bricknall wrote Ho, what a disaster! We had to go shooting lame horses, putting the dead to the side of the road, what a disaster, which could have been avoid if only the officers had gone into action the hard way. That was something I shall never forget (31). Fussell continues that A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
