Edward Bellamy Looking Backward
Looking Backward
The book Looking Backward was written by Edward Bellamy and published in the year 1888.
Bellamy started off his career as a journalist but then married and decided to devote his efforts to
writing fiction novels. Looking Backward was published and Bellamy was famous. The book stirred
around the country and had people imagining a world like the one Bellamy created in his book. The
idea of a utopia as the one he describes is unbelievable. His book is what people, of even now in the
twenty first century, wish the world could possible be like. However, Bellamy s world of reasoning
and judging of people based on the inner beliefs was not what people of then or now do. Bellamy s
book showed a world of rationality being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. West is surprised by how the society has turned out and the kindness he received from a complete
stranger. This stranger and doctor is the other main character Dr. Leete. Julian begins to discuss the
vast improvements among the half a century he has been asleep. Here Bellamy begins to describe the
utopia world that he has created. Julian is amazed to hear how the society is equally prosperous and is
worried and the society values common good among the society than who has the most power. Within
the next few chapters Dr. Leete and Julian stay up to talk and answer questions that he may have. In
these chapters Bellamy is using a comparison of the Julian s old world to the utopia that he has just
entered and what Bellamy is creating as reader s continue with the story. Bellamy continues to explain
further details of this utopia. For one Bellamy explains how each makes the money equally within the
state and than how the money is given to the state to be equally distributed. Continuing on Bellamy
describes a little how the society and state was run back in the ninetieth century. He talks about man s
place in the work field and all the other responsibility that they carry out. Bellamy writes about each
world a little at a time in order for the reader to distinguish the differences of the ninetieth century and
the twentieth century. As the chapters progress and the story of the unimaginable world continues

Importance of Childcare Background Checks
Criminal Background Checks Childcare background checks have always been important for those
hiring people to work particularly with children. But, the recent rise in child related crimes in the past
decade has made this kind of check even more important, not only to people hiring childcare workers,
but for anyone that will be providing care for a child in any way. This includes volunteers working
with children in a public daycare center, church daycare center, home daycare center, and even for
volunteers at summer camp. Parents have become much more protective over their children, and with
good cause (Oliveri, 2008). Organizations that hire employees or volunteers are accountable for their
actions and must make sure, as best they can, that the people representing them can be trusted with
their clients. Employers should be well informed on the risk of failing to conduct screening checks of
potential volunteers or employees, as they may be held legally and morally accountable through
vicarious liability. Vicarious liability makes an organization accountable for the behavior of volunteers
or employees under certain circumstances. It functions on the supposition the organization has
aggravated the risk that harm would take place. It makes sure that organizations take all rational
measures to decrease the risk of harm by using methods such as screening. If they fail to take
reasonable measures to reduce the risk of harm to their clients, an organization (such as a school,

My Brother Sam Is Dead Comparison
There are a lot of books and movies about the Revolutionary War. Some of them are more historical
fiction, which is what I will be covering in this essay. The novel My Brother Sam Is Dead and the
movie The Patriot have many similarities when it comes to the Revolutionary War. However, the two
families have completely different experiences during the war. In the end, both the book and the movie
do an excellent job at showcasing the experiences of those fighting in the war. In both The Patriot and
My Brother Sam Is Dead , the father does not want their son to fight because they are French and
Indian War veterans who have experienced the hardships. The fathers are also against the war, and
believe that family is more important than principles. However, this does not stop Sam (MBSID) and
Gabriel (The Patriot) from joining the Continental Army. In the end, both sons are killed, and ... Show

The main setting is a tavern in Redding, Connecticut, in the New England Colonies. The New England
Colonies did not have as much slavery, and livestock such as cattle (which is a part of the book) is
more important than crops. The war is talked about frequently, but specific battles are not described,
and the story is from a first person perspective, so it talks more about how the war impacts civilians.
The mother, Susannah Meeker, and the youngest brother, Tim Meeker, are alive throughout the book.
Diseases such as cholera are mentioned, and this ends up killing the father, Life Meeker. Life was a
Tory, so it was ironic that he died on a British prison ship. Life however, was not a Redcoat; he didn t
fight in the war. The Revolutionary War is portrayed as a bad thing, and both the Redcoats and the
Patriots are bad guys. Sam is a Patriot, and he is in the war for glory, which is a major theme in the
book. Sam is shot to death by a Patriot, which is another example of

How Was Henry Ford Successful
Henry Ford was born July 30, 1863 in Greenfield, Michigan. He is most famous for manufacturing the
Ford Model T, the first production car ever made. At a young age, Ford demonstrated his mechanical
ability, facility for leadership and learning by trial and error, ultimately developing the foundation for
his career.
Henry Ford learned about steam engines by becoming friends with people who ran them and
eventually, in 1879 he left the farm to become an apprentice at the Michigan car company, a Detroit
based railroad car manufacturer. In 1888, Ford married Clara Jane Bryant and had one child named
Edsel. Ford supported himself by farming and running a sawmill.
Although Henry Ford did not invent the automobile itself, he instead contributed to the creation of
horseless carriage and developed and manufactured the first production automobile: The Ford Model
T. Before that, Henry Ford went through a few successes and a few struggles. 1896 was the year he
got promoted to chief engineer for Edison Illuminating Company. In the same year, Ford with the help

failed, along with his second company.
As a result, Henry Ford took even bigger risks, building and even driving race cars. The success of
these cars attracted additional financial backers. On June 16, 1903, Henry Ford fired up his third and
new automotive company: Ford Motor Company. The company debuted with the Ford Model A.
In 1908, Ford and a group of employees came up with the Model T because Ford had a vision to
create a better, cheaper motor vehicle for the middle class. When first released in, the price was 850
U.S. dollars. The Model T became a huge success with its attributes of being easy to operate, maintain

19th and 20th Century of Europe
Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries
Introduction
During the 19th and 20th century, Europe witnessed its so called demographic transition, with a fall in
birth rates and an even greater fall in mortality rates, which led to a rapid increase in the population.
The demographic transition was essentially a result of a decrease in chronic infectious diseases like
tuberculosis, syphilis, diphtheria, measles, dysentery, and typhoid fever.
The wage dispersion evidence suggests that the middle of the 19th century is an appropriate date for
the start of modern convergence in the Atlantic economy. One might view this convergence as one of
transition toward globally integrated Atlantic factor markets. The convergence in wages from about

And while restrictions on farm imports are still prominent in Europe today, OECD farm sectors are far
too small to matter economy wide to the extent that they did a century ago. Furthermore, the
migrations from poor to rich countries today are pretty trivial affairs compared with the mass
migrations up to World War I. Today, only the U.S. has across the border migration rates anything like
those recorded all over the converging Atlantic economy prior to the quotas. And governments today
have far more sophisticated ways to compensate losers than they had a century ago.
Conclusion
In conclusion we can say that during the 19th and 20th century the well to do European economies of
that time included the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany, as well as Britain. In contrast, the
nine members of the European periphery at this time were Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy,
Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. (Austria and Denmark can be viewed as straddling the margin
between core and periphery.) The industrial core countries had levels of GDP per head 67 percent
higher than the poor European periphery (O Rourke, 1997), and their real wages were 86 percent
higher than the periphery. Note again that the sample excludes east and southeast Europe simply
because the late 19th century data are inadequate for those regions. We do know, however, that these
countries were relatively

Essay about Structural Change and Australian Economy
Structural Change and Australian Economy Structural change is the change in the pattern of
production in an economy as certain products, processes of production and industries disappear and
are replaced by others. The past century has seen the relative decline of agricultural and manufacturing
industries, and the rise of services and new technology sectors. Structural change can be caused by a
wide range of economic influences including changes in the pattern of consumer demand and
technological change. The speed of structural change depends on the ability of an economy or industry
to adjust quickly. People s natural resistance to change and government regulation often impedes the
process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deregulation of industries has been an important part of the microeconomic reform policies for the
Australian economy. For example in the agricultural sector, marketing boards which were often the
only buyer and seller of farm output have been dismantled. In the wheat, egg and dairy industries
deregulation has allowed a market economy, free of excessive central control, improve efficiencies
and competitiveness by forcing inefficient operators out of the markets and the remaining operators to
adopt technological change in order to survive. Deregulation has also been introduced in the financial
sector, the transport industry and in the telecommunications industry. In the case of the
telecommunications industry which was once dominated by one monopoly provider, telecom (Telstra)
the market was opened up to Optus and Vodafone before being opened up to full competition. This
competition helped reduce telecommunication costs dramatically, benefiting many other industries and
the overall competitiveness of the Australian market. The improvement of competition across the
whole economy was the main objective of the governments National Competition Policy. This policy
included the Corporatisation and Privatisation of Public Trading Enterprises such as Australia Post and
Telstra, competition reform in the professions, the opening up of access

JSF Program Analysis
The DoD communicated to Congress that the JSF program was essential to national security and
needed to continue. DoD was not the only corner of the iron triangle to influence Congress s decision
to continue the program. Lockheed Martin and various lobby groups highlighted the fact that the JSF
program supported 133,000 jobs many of them subcontractors and parts suppliers that were spread
across 45 states. Moreover, when full rate production was to begin, the employment figure would
grow to well over 250,000. With constituents in 45 states tied to the JSF program it was a given that
Congress would decide to continue with the JSF program. It is unlikely that Lockheed Martin having

At times a strength can also be considered a weakness depending on the context. The JSF program has
a number of dual strength and weakness aspects to its program. The fact that the program is a joint
venture between the Navy and Air Force is theoretically a strength. The JSF is replacing the A 10, F
16, F/A 18A D, and the AV 8 which are airframes from the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. The original
idea was to use a common production line to produce three versions of a single aircraft thereby saving
money. The concept was that each version would share 70% similarities with the others. It is more
cost effective to produce one aircraft with three versions vice three distinct aircraft. Moreover, there
were eight nations that partnered with the U.S. in the JSF program providing significant financial
contributions especially as compared to what they typically spent on their military budget in a given
year. Partnering with other nations would reduce the overall cost of each

The School Of Science And Computer Science Majors
Monmouth University offers students the choice of Software Engineering, Computer Science, and
Informational Technology when it comes to studies involving computing. The school of science is a
student s primary source to find help, but there are different clubs than can be of use in these areas.
Members of these associations build bonds and that will selflessly help one another. For example,
Software Engineering and Computer Science Majors will tend to stay close together in order to help
one another advance in class and potentially graduate. Here at Monmouth there is the potential for
groups like these to build a community of technical professionals who can tutor and help one another.

Robert Frost s The Tuft Of Flowers And After Apple Picking
Intense and meaningful discoveries are often not anticipated, instead being sudden and unexpected.
The potential catalysts for discoveries are often unforeseen, resulting in unpredictable, confronting,
and challenging discoveries and ramifications. These outlooks are exemplified in Robert Frosts s
poetry works, The Tuft of Flowers , and After Apple Picking , and are also demonstrated in the
Challenger Disaster Speech delivered by Ronald Reagan to the USA in 1986. We see in both these
texts the potential complex ramifications brought forward by unexpected discovery upon an
individual. Robert Frost s works explore the unexpected nature of discovery and its catalysts, the
complex outcomes they bring forth, and the profound impact of discoveries upon a person. As seen in
the dramatic monologue The Tuft of Flowers , the persona is shown to be a farm worker, who goes to
a field after the mower to turn the grass. Together, the shared jobs come together to work as a larger
agricultural process, but the workers do their jobs individually. In the beginning of the poem, the
persona muses on the absence of the other worker, first Looking for him behind an isle of trees; then
Listening for his whetstone on the breeze . The persona seeks the company of the worker, but then
comes to the conclusion; And I must be, as he had been, alone . The hyphen within this line is used as
a caesura to highlight the loneliness of the worker. Due to this observation, the narrator states in a
resigned tone All as must be, I said within my heart, Whether they work together or apart . The use of
interior monologue, by the persona speaking within his heart highlights his isolation and brings forth
the first discovery of the poem, the worker is doing his job alone. The worker s search for company is
then mirrored in the appearance of a bewildered butterfly , seeking the flowers of yesterday. The
seemingly insignificant occurrence of a butterfly flying past the worker becomes important as it acts
as a catalyst for the key meaningful discovery of the poem. The butterfly searching for a flower to
land upon draws the attention of the persona to a tuft of flowers, purposefully untouched by the scythe
of the mower, in an act of

PLN Reflection
When looking at the scope of my personal learning network (PLN) I am realizing that it is much larger
than I initially thought, however I do feel it could and will grow exponentially as I advance in my
career. Currently, at the core of my PLN would be my 2nd grade teaching team that I work alongside
daily. This is comprised of 4 other teachers; one an intervention specialist, and other generalist
teachers in 2nd grade. To expand this, our current building hosts Kindergarten 5th grade, with at least
4 teachers in each grade level. I would also consider all of these teachers, as well as support staff to be

few websites for professional learning and networking. The first would be Pinterest. I typically search
Pinterest for classroom ideas, but also use this website on a personal level. In conjunction with

After measuring equal amounts of distilled water and either adding or subtracting catechol which we
referred to as the substrate some reactions was seen immediately. After which we were able to get data
that supported my original hypothesis that in the addition of substrate and an enzyme the reaction
would be present in varying degrees dependent on whether a temperature change was provided or not.
In the second part of the experiment we were testing the inhibition action of Catechol Oxidase at
different levels in several tubes of varying samples of potato extract, phenylthiourea (PTU) and
distilled water. The experiment showed that (PTU) bonded with the extract and the water causing a
reaction whereas there was no reaction in tube # 1 where there was an equal amount of everything in
the tube. And test tube # 3 was the control tube where the (PTU) was eliminated as to observe if there
was any reaction at all. Of course with the whole experiment we had to be very careful as to add the
catechol last to ensure no premature reaction. It was hypothesized that (PTU) is a non competitive
inhibitor and doubling the substrate will have no reversal effect. In the exercise # 2 we observed the
effect of substrate concentration, enzyme concentration, pH and temperature on enzyme activity. All
the data showed that once potato extract was added to catechol and water the reaction varied
dependent on the level of catechol. As in

Divine Command Theory And Utilitarianism
The divine command theory states that an action is only moral if commanded by God. A utilitarian
believes an action is moral if it benefits everyone associated with the action, whether it is being done

Aristotle s Duality Of Virtue Ethics
Aristotle s philosophy on virtue ethics involves the essence of what it means to be human, how to live
the most fulfilling and effective life, and how this affects one s responsibility to others. This theory is
applicable to virtually any profession, engineering included. As has been instilled in my perceptions
about my chosen career field since my first day at Texas A M University, engineering is far beyond the
intellect to do calculus and write computer code; engineering is making decisions that will affect
countless others and could even hold others life at stake. For this reason, Aristotle s duality of
intellectual and moral virtues deserves a more substantial introspective role in the engineering field.
Within Nichomachean ethics, Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for this non exhaustive list of qualities is that an engineer needs to be able to work and do
business with an array of people, and showing too much emotion or anger is generally unproductive
for the group and can lead to serious interpersonal issues. Engineers should actively work to find ways
to improve their skills, learning from all others, as well be humble enough to admit when somebody
else has a better idea than them. Lastly, engineers should have a personal drive, a personal telos, to
improve not only themselves but to improve society as a whole, be it via increasing the technological
knowledge and capabilities or by providing aid during a humanitarian crisis.
There is much that can be said of engineering in terms of Aristotle s theory of virtue ethics. Engineers
must strive to attain a high level of virtuosity in both the intellectual and moral categories, as
engineers can make decisions that affect the welfare and the very lives of those that use the products
of their labor. While Texas A M University does present many relevant virtues to its students in their
coursework, these are mostly intellectual virtues; moral virtues will have to come through practice in
each of our individual

Comparing Great Rock And Roll Pauses
In both The Darkling Thrush and Great Rock and Roll Pauses , the texts explore the realizations made
and the perspectives gained. Both texts use the setting as a moment of awareness. In both texts, they
use the scenery as a time to reflect on the times to come. The speaker of the poem is wandering
through woods while the characters of Great Rock and Roll Pauses are walking around the dessert.
Both landscapes are dead and barren, empty of any distractions which intensifies the need for
interpersonal relationships. The father realizes he must connect with his son and the speaker with the
thrush.

perspective of the future. When he enters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like the speaker in the poem, the father in Great Rock and Roll Pauses has a negative outlook on how
obsessed his son is towards the pauses in rock songs. The tension throughout the chapter between
father and son finally has a positive turning point when he and his daughter are in the dessert. The
dessert, like the woods, creates a space to reflect. In their conversation, the daughter comments on the
length of a rock song and at first the father falls into his same pattern of automatically dismissing it.
Yet the daughter pushes further saying You have to admit, that s a long time for a song to pause. The
father, surprisingly laughs in response, then says You re right! That is a very long pause (295). In this
admission within the pause, the father starts to see his son s perspective. The father begins to see the
significance of the pauses. The daughter, like the thrush, acts as a nudge in the direction of realization.
Where the speaker in the Darkling Thrush turns from cynicism to hope by assistance of the thrush, the

Essay on Dealing with Loss in Killing the Bear
Dealing with Loss in Killing the Bear
Often things that we experience as children have lasting affects on us that creep up when we least
expect them. In Judith Minty s story Killing the Bear , a woman finds herself in just such a situation.
She finally deals with something that happened to her as a young child that she probably never even
realized was bothering her. In this story the central character painfully comes to grips with a major
loss of security from her childhood.
Throughout Killing the Bear the author flips back and forth from the story at hand and seemingly only
loosely related anecdotes about the main character and bears. One of the first of these side stories is
about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bear represented safety and comfort to her and its loss suddenly plunges her into a world of fear,
isolation, and anger. She feels as though she has been abandoned by the bear, even if she realizes that
it did not choose to abandon her. The picture of the woman that we are shown by the author, is one of
an adult who still hasn t come to terms with these feelings of loss.
The woman in this story is in the woods and alone. The woods illustrate her fears and insecurities. She
is very isolated. Even her faithful dog has died and left her, which is another past experience that
shows her abandonment. She is shown to be very afraid of the bear in the woods. She still has not
come to terms with her own fears and the loss of her safety and comfort. The bear represents many
things to her, some bad and some good. She is aware that the bear seems dangerous and can hurt her,
but she seems unaware of how she pictures the bear. In her mind, bears are supposed to be protection,
like her teddy bear was. She relates the real bear in the woods and the danger that he poses to her with
her lost teddy bear and the feeling of isolation that his loss gave her. The images given by the author
of bears are very contradictory. Some of the images are ones of almost human creatures that are far
from harming people, but others are pictures of vicious, cold blooded killers. In the woman s mind,
these concepts of bears are all jumbled up. She doesn t know exactly what she thinks of

An Investigation Of Foreign Direct Investment
An Investigation of Foreign Direct Investment in Indian Banking Sector L.Kannan
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays an important role in the economic development of a country.
The Indian banking system is radically different from those common in other countries due to its
unique geographic, social and economic characteristics. India has a huge population, different cultures
in different parts of the country and also disparities in income. In this research paper discuss about the

Also in India the population spread among rural and urban areas is also skewed in the favour of urban
areas. All these features reflect in the volume and structure of the Indian banking system. Further in
order to fulfill the requirements to the government policy it has been subjected to different
nationalization schemes at different times. RBI credit policies form the guidelines for banks in India.
Since they had to satisfy the domestic obligations, the banks have so far been confined within the
Indian borders. Banking in India originated in the last decades of the 18th century. The first banks
were The General Bank of India, which started in 1786, and Bank of Hindustan, which started in
1770; both are now defunct. The oldest bank in existence in India is the State Bank of India, which
originated in the Bank of Calcutta in June 1806, which almost immediately became the Bank of
Bengal.
Foreign Direct Investment as seen as a main source of non debt inflows and is increasing being
required as a vehicle for technology flows and as a means of attaining competitive efficiency by
creating a meaningful network of global interconnections. FDI plays a critical role in the economy
since it does not only give opportunities to host countries to enhance their economic development but
also opens new vistas to home countries to optimize their earnings by employing their ideal resources.

Social Policy For Social Change Essay
In this 2000 word analysis I will explain the social policy selected in mahi Tuatahi, konae 2, Te
Tautika (social justice: social change). I will use Pohatu s, 2010 Te Ara Tohu and my learning from
assignment one to provide an analysis of the social policy our group selected. The analysis will
discuss the implications of my chosen social policy for social work practice and give an understanding
of tautika to assist in my analysis.
Donna, Renee and myself teamed up, having an interest in women s refuge and the domestic violence
act, we displayed an awareness of the subject but lacked knowledge of the policy. Through group
discussion and many hours of rangahau, the search for the women s refuge policy and the domestic
violence policy came to an end. There was a realization that the domestic violence policy did not exist.
New research, veered us away from women s refuge and into a new direction. Policies were
everywhere we looked. After broadening our search from domestic violence to family violence, we
struck the jackpot! Group Collaboration ended with our final decision making. We would tear apart,
this overarching policy from top to bottom. We wanted/needed to know everything. Our knowing was
a must, the dread of presenting to a women s refuge advocate and failing was not an option. We had
plenty of reading and researching to do over the next three weeks.
The social policy we chose is the New Zealand Police family violence policy (FVP)1996. This policy

Interaction with the Web site
A retailer s Web site is the primary contact point in an online transaction, where customers can
ascertain a great deal of information about an organization s attention to detail and emphasis on
customer satisfaction. If a Web site is hard to use and visually distracting, customers will often switch
to another retailer that makes the shopping experience easier. Five attributes influence how customers
evaluate the quality of their Web site interactions.
Ease of Use When customers access a retailer s Web site, they often find that no formal instructions
are provided. Instead, online retail settings frequently require customers to learn by doing. This means
that a Web site must be extremely intuitive and easy to use, regardless of how much computer
experience a customer has. In an online setting, customers associate ease of use with freedom from
significant mental effort.3 One of the strengths of online retailing endless shelf space can quickly turn
into a weakness if a Web site is difficult to use. Customers want easy to use search engines that allow
them to find products quickly. For instance, Amazon.com Inc. has a wide variety of products spanning

Experiment Two: Stiffness Report from laboratory work performed on 12 May 2011 as a part of the
unit of study CIVL2201 Structural Mechanics
Abstract
This report has been written to describe an experiment performed on a channel section examining the
stiffness of the beam through two differing types of deformation curvature and deflection. The aim of
the experiment was to determine the value of the flexural rigidity (EI) in two different ways; using the
curvature, k, and the mid span deflection. The testing method used for the experiment is described.
The experiment found that the EI values calculated were as follows: EIcurv = 1.76E+10 Mpa.mm4

Biological warfare, while the other two fall under chemical warfare.
Biological weapons can be broken into three groups;
1) BACTERIAL
This is a contagious bacterial disease that is transmitted through the air(respiratory) or by person to
person contact, and is often accompanied by fever and delirium, headache, weakness, and cough. If
not treated early enough, the recipient may go into septic shock and die. Antibiotics are effective in the
treatment of this type of disease.
Examples: Plague, Anthrax or Q fever; (HLS 101 Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). [APA], n.d.).
2) VIRUSES
This is a submicroscopic infectious agent that is unable to grow or reproduce outside a host cell. It is
non cellular but consisting of a core of DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat.

3.2. Changes in network metrics At the global level, the control group showed no significant changes
of Cglobal and SAglobal in response to the ACZ challenge (Fig. 4, Table 4). In contrast to the control,
the MCI group showed a significant decrease of Cgloblal and SAglobal (Fig 4, Table 4; see also
supplementary figure X). Moreover, there was a significant increase for SAglobal in the MCI group
compared to the control group in the basal condition. Although no significant, a similar increase for
Cgloblal in the MCI group was found (Figs. 4, Table 4). Additionally, even though also no significant,
a decrease of both Cglobal and SAglobal was found in the MCI group compared to the control group
in the ACZ condition. However, unlike the standard analysis, we found a significant interaction of
group by condition for SAglobal (cross over interaction). The MCI group showed a specific decrease
of SAglobal induced by the ACZ challenge (Table 4). Although no significant, a tendency of a similar
interaction was also observed for Cglobal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Dodd Frank Case Study
Dodd Frank in danger? The Dodd Frank law has affected basically the entire financial industry in one
way or another, including limiting the ability of banks to engage in risky investments, and created
oversight agencies for financial institutions and consumers alike. It was enacted after the financial

that the regulations are extremely expensive to financial institutions, many of which can t absorb the

Factors That Determine the Currency Exchange Rates
Factors that Determine the Currency Exchange Rates
Exchange rate is often referred to as the nominal exchange rate. It is defined as the rate at which one
currency can be converted, or exchanged , into another currency. For example, the pound is currently
worth about 1.824 US dollars. One pound can be converted into 1.824 dollars. This is the exchange
rate between the pound and the dollar. There are four types of currencies can be operated, which are a
floating, managed and fixed exchange rate.
Lots of developed industrial nations like US ($), UK (???) and Japan (??¥) operate floating exchange
rates. A floating exchange rate is known as freely floating and should be self regulating. It is often
determined by the market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a fixed exchange system, a country may face a persistent surplus or deficit. To deal with a
persistent surplus, government can increase home demand in order to encourage import, or raise home
price to make export less competitive. To deal with a persistent deficit, government can reduce the
home demand or decrease home price to make export more competitive. If both of measures
inefficient, the only way of influence the exchange rate is to change the exchange rate. If countries
with surpluses move their value of exchange rates higher, it will be revalue, if countries with deficit
decrease their value of exchange rate, it will be devaluation. And usually, exports are dearer in the
condition of devaluation.
If a government is confident that a floating exchange rate system can keep a balance of payments in
balance. Then it will not hold reserves of foreign currency.
The market demand and supply for currency are the most significant determinant for influencing the
exchange rate in a floated exchange rate system. If there is an increase in demanding pounds, the
equilibrium price is likely to change. For example, as it illustrated in figure 1.4(A) (B), if an American
buys a British Rover, there will be an increase in the

Drug Testing Policy
Crowe and Sydney (2000) believe that if youth are able to enter recovery and maintain self discipline
through treatment they are less likely to cycle through the system multiple times. Identifying youth
who needs treatment and obtaining it for they may save money in distorted correctional programs.
Similarly, Lashey (1994) anticipated that drug testing, particularly for use in appraisal, is valuable
because adolescent are more likely to overcome denial and to discuss their substance use problems. As
Hutton (1992) argued that too often schools employ a drug testing policy for symbolic basis. For
example, schools may implement a drug testing policy because drug use is a serious national concern
or to set an example of a zero tolerance policy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parker et al (2002) suggests that such factors as the changes in the financial system and an increase in
young people attending university, result in the conservatory of the period in which young people
adopt their own independence and lack of responsibility over their own activities. Therefore is
suggested that the increasing rates of leisure drug use among student population reflect the notion of
timeout from the pressures of growing up, in which it is increasingly becoming normal. Even if
students have not taken any drugs their awareness and accessibility to access such drugs still shows a
clear picture of the extent to which drug use is normalized and accepted within society (meashan et al,
2001). Shiner and Newburn (1997) criticize the normalization thesis as they believe that the results
discovered in the research does not involve the minorities reporting regular soft drug use are large
enough to legalize the normalization term. They believed that the normalization thesis exaggerates the
degree of drug used by young people as the majority of young people actually desist from using drugs,
preferring socially expressive and pre occupying alternatives instead. Therefore, they believed that it
fails to pay enough attention to the normative contexts in which youthful drug use

Compound Bow History
Archery has been around for the majority of documented human history and has gradually changed
over the centuries. However, in the recent years a new type of bow has been created, the compound
bow. The introduction of the compound bow revolutionized the archery system, allowing for faster
and stronger shooting as well as increased range, all allowing for hunters to better hit their targets.
Before the compound bow, there were wooden bows and the most common one used for hunting was
the Longbow. These bows were about 72 inches in length and could be made out of various types of
wood to give it different properties. It could usually be pulled back around 30 inches and it had a
poundage of 150, which means it is very difficult to shoot. In the article Medieval versus Modern ...

This was a problem because archers had to be able to aim and release their arrows quickly which
meant it was hard to get good accuracy and consistency while shooting unless there was repeated
practice. That was when in the 1960s Holless W. Allen created the first compound bow. The
compound bow has a leveling system that uses cables and pulleys to bend the limbs, these pulleys and
cables were [called cams] placed on both sides of the bow, (Facts About). This system allows for more
energy to be stored in the limbs, this also allows for the arrow to be shot faster than with other types of
bows. The cams on the bow also allow for less recoil and vibrations in the bow limbs which increases
the accuracy of the archer. Compound bows are smaller and lighter than

  • 2. Edward Bellamy Looking Backward Looking Backward The book Looking Backward was written by Edward Bellamy and published in the year 1888. Bellamy started off his career as a journalist but then married and decided to devote his efforts to writing fiction novels. Looking Backward was published and Bellamy was famous. The book stirred around the country and had people imagining a world like the one Bellamy created in his book. The idea of a utopia as the one he describes is unbelievable. His book is what people, of even now in the twenty first century, wish the world could possible be like. However, Bellamy s world of reasoning and judging of people based on the inner beliefs was not what people of then or now do. Bellamy s book showed a world of rationality being ... This stranger and doctor is the other main character Dr. Leete. Julian begins to discuss the vast improvements among the half a century he has been asleep. Here Bellamy begins to describe the utopia world that he has created. Julian is amazed to hear how the society is equally prosperous and is worried and the society values common good among the society than who has the most power. Within the next few chapters Dr. Leete and Julian stay up to talk and answer questions that he may have. In these chapters Bellamy is using a comparison of the Julian s old world to the utopia that he has just entered and what Bellamy is creating as reader s continue with the story. Bellamy continues to explain further details of this utopia. For one Bellamy explains how each makes the money equally within the state and than how the money is given to the state to be equally distributed. Continuing on Bellamy describes a little how the society and state was run back in the ninetieth century. He talks about man s place in the work field and all the other responsibility that they carry out. • 3. Importance of Childcare Background Checks Criminal Background Checks Childcare background checks have always been important for those hiring people to work particularly with children. But, the recent rise in child related crimes in the past decade has made this kind of check even more important, not only to people hiring childcare workers, but for anyone that will be providing care for a child in any way. This includes volunteers working with children in a public daycare center, church daycare center, home daycare center, and even for volunteers at summer camp. Parents have become much more protective over their children, and with good cause (Oliveri, 2008). Organizations that hire employees or volunteers are accountable for their actions and must make sure, as best they can, that the people representing them can be trusted with their clients. Employers should be well informed on the risk of failing to conduct screening checks of potential volunteers or employees, as they may be held legally and morally accountable through vicarious liability. Vicarious liability makes an organization accountable for the behavior of volunteers or employees under certain circumstances. It functions on the supposition the organization has aggravated the risk that harm would take place. It makes sure that organizations take all rational measures to decrease the risk of harm by using methods such as screening. If they fail to take reasonable measures to reduce the risk of harm to their clients, an organization (such as a school, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novel My Brother Sam Is Dead and the movie The Patriot have many similarities when it comes to the Revolutionary War. However, the two families have completely different experiences during the war. In the end, both the book and the movie do an excellent job at showcasing the experiences of those fighting in the war. In both The Patriot and My Brother Sam Is Dead , the father does not want their son to fight because they are French and Indian War veterans who have experienced the hardships. The fathers are also against the war, and believe that family is more important than principles. However, this does not stop Sam (MBSID) and Gabriel (The Patriot) from joining the Continental Army. Life was a Tory, so it was ironic that he died on a British prison ship. Life however, was not a Redcoat; he didn t fight in the war. At a young age, Ford demonstrated his mechanical ability, facility for leadership and learning by trial and error, ultimately developing the foundation for his career. Henry Ford learned about steam engines by becoming friends with people who ran them and eventually, in 1879 he left the farm to become an apprentice at the Michigan car company, a Detroit based railroad car manufacturer. In 1888, Ford married Clara Jane Bryant and had one child named Edsel. Ford supported himself by farming and running a sawmill. Although Henry Ford did not invent the automobile itself, he instead contributed to the creation of horseless carriage and developed and manufactured the first production automobile: The Ford Model T. • 6. 19th and 20th Century of Europe Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries Introduction During the 19th and 20th century, Europe witnessed its so called demographic transition, with a fall in birth rates and an even greater fall in mortality rates, which led to a rapid increase in the population. The demographic transition was essentially a result of a decrease in chronic infectious diseases like tuberculosis, syphilis, diphtheria, measles, dysentery, and typhoid fever. The wage dispersion evidence suggests that the middle of the 19th century is an appropriate date for the start of modern convergence in the Atlantic economy. One might view this convergence as one of transition toward globally integrated Atlantic factor markets. The convergence in wages from about 1854 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And while restrictions on farm imports are still prominent in Europe today, OECD farm sectors are far too small to matter economy wide to the extent that they did a century ago. Furthermore, the migrations from poor to rich countries today are pretty trivial affairs compared with the mass migrations up to World War I. Today, only the U.S. has across the border migration rates anything like those recorded all over the converging Atlantic economy prior to the quotas. And governments today have far more sophisticated ways to compensate losers than they had a century ago. Conclusion In conclusion we can say that during the 19th and 20th century the well to do European economies of that time included the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany, as well as Britain. In contrast, the nine members of the European periphery at this time were Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. (Austria and Denmark can be viewed as straddling the margin between core and periphery.) The industrial core countries had levels of GDP per head 67 percent higher than the poor European periphery (O Rourke, 1997), and their real wages were 86 percent higher than the periphery. Note again that the sample excludes east and southeast Europe simply because the late 19th century data are inadequate for those regions. We do know, however, that these countries were relatively ... Essay about Structural Change and Australian Economy Structural Change and Australian Economy Structural change is the change in the pattern of production in an economy as certain products, processes of production and industries disappear and are replaced by others. The past century has seen the relative decline of agricultural and manufacturing industries, and the rise of services and new technology sectors. Structural change can be caused by a wide range of economic influences including changes in the pattern of consumer demand and technological change. The speed of structural change depends on the ability of an economy or industry to adjust quickly. People s natural resistance to change and government regulation often impedes the process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deregulation of industries has been an important part of the microeconomic reform policies for the Australian economy. For example in the agricultural sector, marketing boards which were often the only buyer and seller of farm output have been dismantled. In the wheat, egg and dairy industries deregulation has allowed a market economy, free of excessive central control, improve efficiencies and competitiveness by forcing inefficient operators out of the markets and the remaining operators to adopt technological change in order to survive. Deregulation has also been introduced in the financial sector, the transport industry and in the telecommunications industry. In the case of the telecommunications industry which was once dominated by one monopoly provider, telecom (Telstra) the market was opened up to Optus and Vodafone before being opened up to full competition. This competition helped reduce telecommunication costs dramatically, benefiting many other industries and the overall competitiveness of the Australian market. The improvement of competition across the whole economy was the main objective of the governments National Competition Policy. This policy included the Corporatisation and Privatisation of Public Trading Enterprises such as Australia Post and Telstra, competition reform in the professions, the opening up of access ... • 11. Robert Frost s The Tuft Of Flowers And After Apple Picking Intense and meaningful discoveries are often not anticipated, instead being sudden and unexpected. The potential catalysts for discoveries are often unforeseen, resulting in unpredictable, confronting, and challenging discoveries and ramifications. These outlooks are exemplified in Robert Frosts s poetry works, The Tuft of Flowers , and After Apple Picking , and are also demonstrated in the Challenger Disaster Speech delivered by Ronald Reagan to the USA in 1986. We see in both these texts the potential complex ramifications brought forward by unexpected discovery upon an individual. Robert Frost s works explore the unexpected nature of discovery and its catalysts, the complex outcomes they bring forth, and the profound impact of discoveries upon a person. As seen in the dramatic monologue The Tuft of Flowers , the persona is shown to be a farm worker, who goes to a field after the mower to turn the grass. Together, the shared jobs come together to work as a larger agricultural process, but the workers do their jobs individually. In the beginning of the poem, the persona muses on the absence of the other worker, first Looking for him behind an isle of trees; then Listening for his whetstone on the breeze . The persona seeks the company of the worker, but then comes to the conclusion; And I must be, as he had been, alone . The hyphen within this line is used as a caesura to highlight the loneliness of the worker. Due to this observation, the narrator states in a resigned tone All as must be, I said within my heart, Whether they work together or apart . The use of interior monologue, by the persona speaking within his heart highlights his isolation and brings forth the first discovery of the poem, the worker is doing his job alone. The worker s search for company is then mirrored in the appearance of a bewildered butterfly , seeking the flowers of yesterday. The seemingly insignificant occurrence of a butterfly flying past the worker becomes important as it acts as a catalyst for the key meaningful discovery of the poem. The butterfly searching for a flower to land upon draws the attention of the persona to a tuft of flowers, purposefully untouched by the scythe of the mower, in an act of ... After which we were able to get data that supported my original hypothesis that in the addition of substrate and an enzyme the reaction would be present in varying degrees dependent on whether a temperature change was provided or not. In the second part of the experiment we were testing the inhibition action of Catechol Oxidase at different levels in several tubes of varying samples of potato extract, phenylthiourea (PTU) and distilled water. The experiment showed that (PTU) bonded with the extract and the water causing a reaction whereas there was no reaction in tube # 1 where there was an equal amount of everything in the tube. Of course with the whole experiment we had to be very careful as to add the catechol last to ensure no premature reaction. It was hypothesized that (PTU) is a non competitive inhibitor and doubling the substrate will have no reversal effect. The reason for this non exhaustive list of qualities is that an engineer needs to be able to work and do business with an array of people, and showing too much emotion or anger is generally unproductive for the group and can lead to serious interpersonal issues. Engineers should actively work to find ways to improve their skills, learning from all others, as well be humble enough to admit when somebody else has a better idea than them. Lastly, engineers should have a personal drive, a personal telos, to improve not only themselves but to improve society as a whole, be it via increasing the technological knowledge and capabilities or by providing aid during a humanitarian crisis. There is much that can be said of engineering in terms of Aristotle s theory of virtue ethics. Engineers must strive to attain a high level of virtuosity in both the intellectual and moral categories, as engineers can make decisions that affect the welfare and the very lives of those that use the products of their labor. While Texas A M University does present many relevant virtues to its students in their coursework, these are mostly intellectual virtues; moral virtues will have to come through practice in each of our individual ... Both texts use the setting as a moment of awareness. In both texts, they use the scenery as a time to reflect on the times to come. The speaker of the poem is wandering through woods while the characters of Great Rock and Roll Pauses are walking around the dessert. Both landscapes are dead and barren, empty of any distractions which intensifies the need for interpersonal relationships. The father realizes he must connect with his son and the speaker with the thrush. Like the speaker in the poem, the father in Great Rock and Roll Pauses has a negative outlook on how obsessed his son is towards the pauses in rock songs. The tension throughout the chapter between father and son finally has a positive turning point when he and his daughter are in the dessert. The dessert, like the woods, creates a space to reflect. In their conversation, the daughter comments on the length of a rock song and at first the father falls into his same pattern of automatically dismissing it. Yet the daughter pushes further saying You have to admit, that s a long time for a song to pause. The father, surprisingly laughs in response, then says You re right! That is a very long pause (295). In this admission within the pause, the father starts to see his son s perspective. The father begins to see the significance of the pauses. The daughter, like the thrush, acts as a nudge in the direction of realization. Essay on Dealing with Loss in Killing the Bear Dealing with Loss in Killing the Bear Often things that we experience as children have lasting affects on us that creep up when we least expect them. In Judith Minty s story Killing the Bear , a woman finds herself in just such a situation. She finally deals with something that happened to her as a young child that she probably never even realized was bothering her. In this story the central character painfully comes to grips with a major loss of security from her childhood. Throughout Killing the Bear the author flips back and forth from the story at hand and seemingly only loosely related anecdotes about the main character and bears. The bear represented safety and comfort to her and its loss suddenly plunges her into a world of fear, isolation, and anger. She feels as though she has been abandoned by the bear, even if she realizes that it did not choose to abandon her. The picture of the woman that we are shown by the author, is one of an adult who still hasn t come to terms with these feelings of loss. The woman in this story is in the woods and alone. The woods illustrate her fears and insecurities. She is very isolated. Even her faithful dog has died and left her, which is another past experience that shows her abandonment. She is shown to be very afraid of the bear in the woods. She still has not come to terms with her own fears and the loss of her safety and comfort. The bear represents many things to her, some bad and some good. She is aware that the bear seems dangerous and can hurt her, but she seems unaware of how she pictures the bear. In her mind, bears are supposed to be protection, like her teddy bear was. She relates the real bear in the woods and the danger that he poses to her with her lost teddy bear and the feeling of isolation that his loss gave her. The images given by the author of bears are very contradictory. Some of the images are ones of almost human creatures that are far from harming people, but others are pictures of vicious, cold blooded killers. In the woman s mind, these concepts of bears are all jumbled up. She doesn t know exactly what she thinks of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is defined as the rate at which one currency can be converted, or exchanged , into another currency. For example, the pound is currently worth about 1.824 US dollars. One pound can be converted into 1.824 dollars. This is the exchange rate between the pound and the dollar. There are four types of currencies can be operated, which are a floating, managed and fixed exchange rate. Lots of developed industrial nations like US ($), UK (???) and Japan (??¥) operate floating exchange rates. A floating exchange rate is known as freely floating and should be self regulating. It is often determined by the market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a fixed exchange system, a country may face a persistent surplus or deficit. To deal with a persistent surplus, government can increase home demand in order to encourage import, or raise home price to make export less competitive. To deal with a persistent deficit, government can reduce the home demand or decrease home price to make export more competitive. If both of measures inefficient, the only way of influence the exchange rate is to change the exchange rate. If countries with surpluses move their value of exchange rates higher, it will be revalue, if countries with deficit decrease their value of exchange rate, it will be devaluation. And usually, exports are dearer in the condition of devaluation. If a government is confident that a floating exchange rate system can keep a balance of payments in balance. Then it will not hold reserves of foreign currency. The market demand and supply for currency are the most significant determinant for influencing the exchange rate in a floated exchange rate system.
