Language is a topic that will never cease to adapt, from slang being developed in suburbs of urban
cities, to new additions to the Oxford dictionary. We, students of English, use different concepts of
language almost everyday and most of the time we don t even realize it. To get a better understanding
of the English language and concepts developed within it, one would turn to look at the arguments of
scholars including George Orwell, Nancy Mairs, S.I. Hayakawa, Nicholas Carr, and the dispute of the
Sunlight Foundation and Senator Mike Quigley. All of these authors have an argument for how
language is being developed and molded into this day and age, and for the modern English student,

striving to mature into an independent country. This land was known as America, and they were

The ocean is a beautiful yet dangerous thing that represents not only destruction but new beginnings.
When Eddie met Ruby, the woman Ruby Pier was named after, she told Eddie the story of how the
pier came to be. Her husband, Emile, was captivated by the ocean and enjoyed seaside resorts. He

married, Emile promised to build a resort park just for Ruby. When the pier burned down after a

home, he chased Mickey out the house with a hammer. They ran in the middle of a storm to the pier,
and Mickey ended up rolling under a wood railing into the ocean below. Eddie s dad jumped into the
water after him and dragged him to shore, where they both collapsed on the sand (134 136). Eddie s
father ended up catching pneumonia and his condition went from fair to stable and from stable to
serious (124 25). Eddie s father ended up dying and Eddie s life was never the same afterward. A new
beginning did sprout for Eddie out of his father s sickness, though. Eddie started his work at the pier:
