As Ramzan season surrounds our place, it is necessary to spread and develop awareness about the ramzan and fasting. People with diabetes are increasing and thus I focused the diabetics to help them manage their blood glucose and in turn enjoy the fasting.
2. RAMZAN
• People of about 900 million which is 67% of
the world population have fasting from dawn
to dusk for 29-30 days.
• In total, the religious belief is that one should
hold 20hours of fasting in the Ramzan period.
• However there are exempted cases for fasting.
3. EXEMPTED PEOPLE
• People with illness
• Travelers
• Children
• Menstrual days
• Pregnant and lactating women
4. PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES
• During fasting, the people may experience
certain physiological symptoms like
• Change in the circadian rhythm
• Decrease in the body weight
• Hypoglycemia
• BP, BMI alterations.
6. NUTRITIONAL PLAN
• A diet for people with diabetes during the
period of Ramzan, should be carefully planned
so that there will be

7. WELL BALANCED MEALS
• Carbohydrates: 45 – 50%
• Protein: 20 – 30%
• Fat: < 35%
• LOW GI foods and HIGH FIBER foods
• LOW SAF foods
8. CARBOHYDRATES
• At least 130g/day that is about 40 – 45% of
calories should be from complex
carbohydrates.
• Low GI and GL foods should be selected
• High Fiber of about 20 – 35g/day is
recommended.
• Avoid refined carbohydrates, simple sugars
and processed grains for better health.
9. PROTEIN
• About 20 – 30% of protein that is 1.2kg/kg
body weight/day should be consumed.
• It is better to avoid red meat as there is high
Saturated fatty acids.
• Fish, skinless poultry, milk and milk products
can be opted as better choice.
• Plan your meals for a better energy during
fasting.
10. FAT
• About 30 – 35% of fat is recommended.
• Choose PUFA & MUFA like vegetable oil,
olive oil, tuna, salmon, sardines and mackerel.
• Avoid red meat and other foods that are rich in
Saturated fats.
• Thus, people with diabetes are saved from the
risk of CVD.
11. TIPS
• Plenty of vegetables and fruits as salads
• Minimize ghee, samosas and pakoras
• Avoid sugary desserts
• Keep hydrated
• Avoid caffeinated products.
12. WHEN TO BREAK THE FAST?
• Always monitor your blood glucose levels.
• If the values are < 70 or > 300, make sure you
break the fast as you may face the risk of being
dehydration and acute illness.
• Check and treat the hypo and hyperglycemia
and break your fast if you have symptoms like:

• Diabetes can be managed with medicines like
Sulfonylureas, Metformin, Insulin, SGLT2,
Acarbose, GLP1-RA
• These doses can be adjusted with the
consultation with your diabetologist.
