Editor's Notes

  1. You have to start looking early. Scholarship deadlines may be as early as a full year before you need the cash to pay for college. Some scholarships come in the form of contests in which you may win money, and those deadlines start as early as grade school.
  2. There are 7.4 million high school student athletes. 460,000 play athletics in the NCAA. 6% of all high school athletes compete in college. 2% of high school athletes are offered an athletic scholarship
  3.  Most professional athletes don’t enter a professional sport straight from high school. Many will play their sport in college. Visit the NCAA Eligibility Center online to ensure you meet their rigorous academic requirements.
  4. Is applying for scholarships worth it? Scholarship searching can be worth your time! There is definitely no job for students that pays so well. And with the cost of books at roughly $1,000 per year, every dollar counts. Many scholarships go without any applicants each year! So take the time to apply; your chances might be better than you think. But be realistic: you most likely won’t receive everything you apply for.
  5. Myth - Scholarships are based on all kinds of criteria. Not just the smartest and most athletic get scholarships. Myth - If you meet the eligibility criteria, you are on the same playing field as every other applicant. Myth - Few students get a free ride, you need to apply, apply, apply.
  6. These are great, reliable and FREE resources for you to use when searching for scholarships. As you find information, keep it all in one place such as a binder.
  7. Grades really matter beginning your freshman year of high school. No part of your college/scholarship application carries more weight than the courses you take and the grades you earn during high school.
