Merinos Research Paper
The merino was originally bred in Spain. Spain is a country that has warm climate like Australia.
Merinos are known to have fine wool that is really suitable for spinning and weaving into a fine fibre
that many people use to produce clothing. John and Elizabeth Macarthur got married in Devonshire in
England in 1788. In 1790, on June 28, John Macarthur and his wife Elizabeth Macarthur arrived in
Port Jackson with their son Edward. Macarthur purposely did not cross breed his merino sheep and he
and Elizabeth worked hard to establish their flock. The hard work that they put in soon began to pay
off for the Macarthurs and by 1803, their flock numbered over 4000 almost pure merinos. In 1807, the
first wool was sent to England by the Macarthurs.

Literary Devices Of Scene In Faking It By Michael Chabon
Most authors who implement the literary device of scene in their writing do so to establish an entry
point to the universal subject they are trying to portray. In literature, scene is an experience or moment
that the author explains in great detail through various devices in order to perceive that time is slowed.
In Faking It , Michael Chabon does exactly this, utilizing a scene to introduce the main point of his
chapter. In my essay, ________ , I made a conscience effort to mimic this literary device; however,
failed to properly utilize it as an entry point. At the forefront of Faking It , Michael Chabon paints a
descriptive scene in which he was attempting to install a towel rack in the bathroom. To start the
chapter, Chabon dictated that the only reason he was granted this chore was because he knew, kind of,
how to use an electric drill. He then provided a descriptive image of his efforts, explaining how he
read the instruction while sagely stroking [his] whiskers...[looking] as if [he] knew what [he] was
doing and then proceeded to [drop] one of the metal towel bars onto [his] right thumb . Chabon
continually comments and hints at his inexperience and that he was forced to sustain the appearance of
competence . This passage is a perfectly crafted depiction of a scene: Chabon utilized both imagery
and diction to illustrate a man who was unaware of how to install a towel rack, yet felt compelled and
pressured into assuming the responsibility of doing so and

One time when he was king, he had an opportunity to really trust God. King Jehoshaphat
received news that was very frightening. A lookout guard for the city brought some terrible news
to the king. Their enemy had unexpectedly come to fight them. They were very close to the city.
The army was large and very powerful. The situation looked frightening for King Jehoshaphat
and his people. The first thing that Jehoshaphat did was to pray and ask God for help. He asked
all the people not to eat for the day. Instead, he asked them to pray and ask God for help.
Then, King Jehoshaphat stood in front of the people and prayed to God. He praised God for how
powerful and wonderful He was. He asked God to help them defeat this enemy. He told God that
they could not do anything without God s help. God heard King Jehoshaphat s prayer. God sent a
messenger named Jahaziel to speak to all the people. He told them to listen to what the Lord said.
He said, Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this big army. For the battle is not yours,
but God s. God told them to wait until the next day to fight. God showed that when they
marched to fight, they would see how God would win the battle for them.
Early the next morning, Jehoshaphat and his army went out as God told them.
He asked people to come and sing songs to God and play beautiful music to God. They sang at
the front of the army. As they sang, God sent

Sex Discrimination And Discrimination

Title IX People are constantly making mistakes and avoiding certain responsibilities. Mainly minor
responsibilities can be avoided and unanswered, but major ones need to be questioned and brought to
attention in order for them to be dealt with. Sex discrimination is one of those mistakes that people are
constantly making. It isn t happening as much as it used to in the past, but it is still occurring in our
education system, employment, housing, and even in something as small as credit. There are large
episodes in past time that we are able to track down and see examples of sex discrimination towards
females, especially in education. From as early as birth, women are being discriminated against just
because they are supposedly inferior to men. This was all put to a stop when Title IX was formed.
Title IX s main objective is to protect people from discrimination based on sex in education programs
or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. The motto that we follow is No person in the
United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or
be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial
assistance . Title IX was passed as a law by Richard Nixon in 1972, and was created within the
Education Amendments by Congress. It also consisted of two benefactors, Birch Bayh from the
Senate, and Edith Green from the House

Essay On The Mages
An army of soldiers, mages and slaves head for an abandoned field in the midst of the kingdom of
Buhl. With them they bring many cages of all sizes and materials. As the army tramples forward, they
find a crack in the sky that seems to be pulsating with magic. The General of the army peers at the
crack and lets out a sharp whistle, while rotating his hand in the air.
CIRCLE UP! I WANT THIS PLACE LOCKED DOWN IN TEN! The General is an older man, whos

Archers at the ready! At his signal, a hundred archers take aim toward the center of the magic circle.
Golems up! 4 mages nod and with glowing hands, point to the center. 4 large creatures made of
whitestone walk forward with thunderous steps, standing at the corners of the formations. Like a
cornered animal the crack in the sky reacts violently to the attack on it. It sends a green lighting bolt to
the ground and a black portal opens up. The General unsheathes his sword and yells.
AT THE READY! HERE THEY COME! As if on queue monsters from every walk of life being
pouring out of the portal and engaging the knights. The General notices nothing of importance and
calls for the archers to unleash their volley, felling the wave of creatures. Not a breath later more and
more pour through.

The Emergency Department ( Ed )
Background Length of stay in the Emergency Department (ED) is one important aspect of healthcare
that can affect patient satisfaction as well as the number of patients that can be seen by a physician in a
day. Length of stay (LOS) is measured as the time a person spends at the ED between arrival and
departure (1). A longer LOS will not only affect patient satisfaction negatively by creating
unnecessary frustrations, but can also cause ED overcrowding, leading to poor patient care (2). The
number of ED visits in the U.S. i.s approximately 129.8 million in 2010 and is continuing to rise (10).
The issue of ED overcrowding has gained national attention due to many problems, such as a decrease
in hospital bed availability (3), an increase in hospital mortality, and an increase in the number of
patients leaving the ED before being seen by a physician (4). It has then become increasingly evident
that in order to improve patient care and ED flow, it is necessary to examine factors associated with
longer LOS in the ED. The purpose of this study is to examine specifically the patient population that
presents to the emergency department with suicidal ideation (SI), due to the lack of literature
regarding the topic of LOS in patients with suicidal ideation. Considering how vulnerable suicidal
patients are, it is even more crucial to provide prompt and timely care to them, and find ways to
reduce their LOS in the ED. SI is defined as unusual thoughts or desire to end one s life, which

Agriculture In The Mayan Civilization
The imbalancing between the Mayan population and the effective magnitude of their agriculture
suggest the situation of the Mayan people in the availability to their long term survival. The Mayans
showed increasement in their population expeditiously which resulted in higher demand for food for
the people to consume. Consequently, in order for the Mayans to manage the increasing population,
the Mayans turned to use their accessible land over to cultivation. (Drew 139) With this in mind, the
author, David Drew, asked an intrigued question of how much food the land could produced for the
Mayans? (138) By all means, the question David Drew issued, could not be possible to thoroughly

Given that, the Mayan regions displayed a different variety of soil fertility and localized weather
patterns that affected the circumstances for agriculture to many different portions of areas around the
southern regions of Mesoamerica. (139) In fact, farmers, who currently cultivate as the similar system
the Mayans practiced and lives in parts of ancient southern regions of Mesoamerica, announced that
soils in the area will naturally diminish over the years in productivity, fertility, and crop yields. (139)
With the attention of the growing Mayan population, the Mayan people were in need of retaining the
food demand of the Mayan population by cultivating in the remaining lands near their regions that are
enriched in soil. With this in mind to the naturally constant changing of the soils, the Mayans enforced
to cut down the time of fallow for their fields which eventually be in high risk strategy in resulting in a
cultivation catastrophe for temporary ends. (139) Altogether, the Mayan population and the
effectiveness of their agriculture may determine the situation for the Mayan people to their long term

Christian Mysticism In Canto 27 Of Dante s Purgatorio
In Canto 27 of Dante s Purgatorio, Dante travels through the terrace of lust along with his guide Virgil
and Statius, a poet newly released from Purgatory beginningand begins a transition from an epic mode
to a lyric one. Oddly, reparation for the sin of lust draws Dante back to his past as a lyric love poet,
although such a life is notorious for its connotations with sensuality. However, this placement
indicates a central theme of the Divine Comedy: to ascend to God, Dante must learn to love Him.
Although classic Christian mysticism, such as that of St. Augustine s Confessions, seeks union with
God through abandonment of earthly goods, Dante can only reach the Divine through the guidance of
his old love, the beautiful and saintly Beatrice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dante exults: desire upon desire so seized me to ascend / that with every step / I felt that I was
growing wings for flight (27.121 123). Dante s excitement for ascent echoes and expounds upon St.
Augustine s ascent at Ostia. However, there is a crucial difference between the two, for Augustine
describes his ascent as the very soul [growing] silent to herself and...mounting beyond self
(Confessions, 9.10): leaving behind everything earthly to participate in eternal bliss. He says that
earthly things all grew silent, and in their silence He alone spoke to us, not by them but by Himself
(Confessions, 9.10). Whereas Augustine ascends by abandoning the things of earth, Dante approaches
God by purification of his love for

Each of these four films is dealing with very complex and uniquely feminine challenges in the modern
world. The screenplays were very compelling, probably the most compelling I have personally
watched. The layering of the female characters was put forth in a way where their struggles and
obstacles did not necessarily make them weak. Although many of their struggles and challenges were
uniquely associated to their gender, the portrayal of their sagas and interactions with one another as
women were not uninteresting or unworthy of the greatest appreciation of character development by
the writers. These were strong and interesting characters, which just happened to be women dealing
with distinctly difficult challenges. The filmmakers did a superb ... Show more content on

Filmmakers and the writers had the most challenging task with that of this character because it was
intertwined with that of a historical figure who was troubled herself but very famous for her literary
ability and accomplishments. Laura is reading the work of Virginia Woolf, and is immersed in her own
life, which is very structured regimented, and comes with enormous societal standards and
expectations. It is this structure and rigidity that imprisons Laura. The unhappiness of Laura is
something that leads her to seek solace and emotional vitality in the work of Woolf and her novel Mrs.
Dalloway. This is what makes the story very unique, because it is layering the experiences of several
different women into one, and they each interact with each other without knowing it. Virginia Woolf
has created Mrs. Dalloway. Laura is engaging into the life of Mrs. Dalloway as a respite from her own
personal life. And the character of Dalloway is confronted with her own problems, which has themes
that resonate with both women. The complicated method of portraying this in the story and film is
effective, as there are scenes that show three days of three different years, bookmarked by the tragedy
of Mrs. Woolf s suicide. The way that the filmmakers showed this was very good, mainly because it
was not confusing or boring which is

Words As Sweet As Honey From Sakhambi Short Story
The story Words as Sweet as Honey From Sankhambi is a story being retold by a children s book
specialist Linda Rode. Sankhambi plays a big part in many Venda folktales and is very alike to
Hlakanyana from Zulu Folklore. He takes on many different shapes and sizes in these tales but one
thing for certain is wherever he is there is always trouble. This story is about how monkeys became
tall, slender, quick, and nimble from being short, and fat. Back in the early days the monkeys were fat,
little, pot bellied animals that moved rather slowly. They were not nearly as nimble or quick as they
are today, and there body shape was much different. Sankhambi had a lot of fun sneaking up behind
the monkeys and pulling their tails. Obviously the monkeys were not too happy about this and would
throw seeds and bits at him from high in the tree tops while he lay there basking in the sun.
Sankhambi hated the monkey business and one day he decided that he was going to put a stop to it. He
approached the monkeys and said in his sweetest voice that he wanted to tell his dear monkey friends
a big secret. The eldest monkey called out to the other monkeys not to listen to him, because it was
just another one of his wicked tricks. Sankhambi begged and pleaded the monkeys to listen to him for
this very special event. Monkeys are naturally curious animals so they slowly began to climb down the
tree to listen to Sankhambi. Sankhambi with his voice sweet as honey told them that he would like to

No-Fault Divorce Pros And Cons
Marriage is a beautiful, life changing event that bonds two people together forever. However, together
forever isn t always the case for most couples. Marriages can fail for various reasons and divorces are
usually filed. Unfortunately, divorce is becoming more common and normal. When a couple becomes
unsatisfied in their marriage for whatever reason, they can file for a No fault divorce. In a No fault
divorce, either one spouse or both can file and does not have to prove any fault on account of the other
spouse. All the spouse needs to do is give any reason that the state honors for the divorce. When
considering a No fault divorce, it is important to first consider the pros and cons.
Pros of No Fault Divorce A No fault divorce can be beneficial in many ways such that the divorce
process is shorter, depending on the state s law of minimum required days of residence and less
expensive due to not having to deal with outrageous lawyer fees. A No fault divorce is also beneficial
because privacy is being respected. Spouses do not have to give reasons, point fault, or involve anyone
in their personal lives. No fault divorces have also shown less emotional stress and reduced incidents
of violence on children and spouses. Children play a big role in divorces. Seeing their parents split up

Essay on Parallelism of Satan and Eve in John Milton´s...
In John Milton s Paradise Lost, the parallelism between Satan and Eve s fall is strong in that they were
once both the highest before pure perfection. Lucifer is associated with evil, which stems from his free
will leading to his rebellion against God and, ultimately, his great fall. He is known as the one who
introduces sin to Adam and Eve the first humans to ever exist. His plan to go against God is the
beginning of a whole new world to the universe and a whole new significance of himself as the one
known for human error and evil. Eve, the mother of human race, is Satan s target to pull her down to
his world of sin because she also wishes to become independent of Adam making her susceptible to
anything that can separate her from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, craving independence from God ferociously backfires on Satan when he finds out that even
after leaving hell, he cannot escape it, which way [he] [flies] is Hell, [he] [himself] is Hell, (IV, 75).
Satan finds his way to revolt against and separate from God to overrule Heaven and become king,
instead however, he takes on the role of the representation of all evil which is evidently seen in his
interactions with Eve. Eve s hunger to become independent from Adam and all she is commanded to
do is similar to Satan s situation in that their yearn for power and singular identity lead them to revolt
against their creator. Her desire to separate from Adam is first seen when she is introduced to the
audience in her state of narcissism. She sees a reflection of herself in a pond and is in awe of her
beauty of sympathy and love, (IV, 465) which shows the parallelism to Satan s own arrogant vanity.
He catches on to this similarity they share and decides she will be an easy target of persuasion. He
quickly takes charge and plans how he will lead her to eat the apple from the Tree of Knowledge,
which is the only tree that God prohibited to pick fruit from. Satan first catches her attention by being
a serpent who speaks; something she had never encountered before. He smooth talks her into really
listening to him by focusing his words around her and how much better life could be if she just took a
bite

Why People Commit Crimes
There are different points of view of what is criminal behavior. Of course, each person has it own
opinion. Crime is the human conduct in violation of the criminal laws of a state, the federal
government, or a local jurisdiction that has the power to make such laws, according with Schmalleger.
The criminal behavior is the antisocial acts that a person commits for different reasons. This means
that the person violated laws constantly for a long or short time period. There are many reasons why
criminals commit crimes. Some of the criminals commit crimes for necessity, others for mental illness,
and others for bad influences or just wrong decisions. To get a better understanding of why criminals

Contemporary Ethical Issues In Utilitarianism
There are many contemporary ethical problems that societies face without having a solid response.
Most of these problems come from the conflict caused by the different ways these problems can be
interpreted. There are also many ethical theories that defend the different views to such problems.
Among these theories we can mention Virtue Ethics, Utilitarianism, Kantianism, etc. I think there is
one of these theories that is very interesting in nature: Utilitarianism. In this work I will be giving a
brief explanation of Utilitarianism, as well as discussing the character of consequentialist or not
consequentialist of this ethical theory. Also, I will analyze each of the contemporary issues studied in
this unit based on Utilitarianism, as well as mentioning anecdotes that pertain to such conflicts.
Like other forms of consequentialism, utilitarianism s core idea is that whether actions are morally
right or wrong depends on their effects (). Utilitarianism is a moral principle that holds that the
morally right course of action in any situation is the one that produces the greatest balance of benefits
over harms for everyone affected (). The only problem I see with this ethical theory is that an action
that could be generally considered unethical can be the one that produces the most value for the
greatest amount of people; therefore, that unethical action will be an ethical action under the utilitarian
view. A concrete example of the idea just mentioned can be easily found with

Questions On Options And Options
③ Options
Options are traded both on exchanges and in the over the counter market. There are two types of
option which are call option, giving the holder the right to buy the underlying asset by a certain date
for a certain price, and put option, giving the holder the right to sell the underlying asset by a certain
date for a certain price, while both the counter parties only have obligations (usually the speculators).
Apart from that, depending on the expiration date, American options can be exercised at any time up
to the expiration date while European options can be exercised only on the maturity itself. Because of
the right that options provide to the holder to decide whether or not to exercise the contract, there is a

④ Swaps
Swaps now occupy a position of central importance in over the counter derivatives market. The
statistics produced by the Bank for International Settlements show that about 58.5% of all over the
counter derivatives are interest rate swaps and a further 4% are currency swaps. A swap is an over the
counter agreement between two parties to exchange cash flows in the future. The agreement defines
the dates when the cash flows are to be paid and the way in which they are to be calculated. Usually
the calculation of the cash flows involves the future value of an interest rate, an exchange rate, or
other market variable. The most popular (plain vanilla) interest rate swap is one where LIBOR is
exchanged for a floating rate of interest. In this swap, one party agrees to pay the other party interest at
a fixed rate on a notional principal for a number of years. In return, it receives interest at a floating
rate on the same notional principal for the same period of time. Principal amounts are not usually
exchanged in the interest rate swap.
Take another popular swap as an interpretation for hedging and speculation, which is currency swap.
In its simplest form, this involves paying interest on a principal amount in one currency and receiving
interest on a principal in another currency.

Mesozoic Era:
The dinosaurs and the mammals appeared during the triassic period,Roughly 225 million years ago.
The dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago. The Mesozoic Era lasted about 180 million years,

The Permian Triassic boundary, at the start of the Mesozoic, is defined relative to a particular section

Biography of Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn
Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn was the premier artist in 17th century Europe during the great Golden
Age of Dutch painting, well known for his Dutch Baroque style of art that lead to his title as one of the
greatest painters in history. His incredible brush technique and his masterful appreciation of human
nature combined to create a humongous impact on his peers as well as influencing tons of artists of
later years.1 He was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Netherlands, a small city located in the Dutch
province of South Holland. Rembrandt was born into a large family, the eighth of nine children. His
father, Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn, was a miller, and his mother, Neeltgen Willemsd van Zuytbroeck,
was the daughter of a baker. Rembrandt studied at Latin school for seven years before enrolling in
university in 1620, before leaving after only a few months to become an apprentice to the painter for
Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh.2 After working under Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh for three
years, Rembrandt left for Amsterdam, to work with Pieter Lastman, in 1624. While many artists in the
17th century felt like they needed to travel to Italy to fulfill their artistic training, Rembrandt never left
Holland once in his entire life, taking pride in his Dutch nationality.3 Pieter Lastman was one of the
most respected experts in historical paintings in all of Holland, as his inspiration in his works came
mostly from mythological, historical, and biblical scenes. Like Lastman,

Causes of the Great Fire of London Essay
James Jonathan Gray
Hist 3372
Fall 2009
Dr.Willis
According to Adrian Tinniswood, seventeenth century Londoners vacillated between seeing the Great
Fire of London as an act of terrorism and an act of god. What were the major components of these
explanations and why were contemporaries so eager to search for a reason for the calamity other than
simple accident.
Was the Great fire of London an act of terrorism or an act of God? There are numerous explanations
that attribute to the belief in either. London in the seventeenth century was no paradise and was
actually a quite unpleasant place to live. Coupled with thousands dying from an outbreak of plague,
with the dead sometimes populating the streets of London, it is quite ... Show more content on

This contributed to many a belief that the fire that paved the way for a rebuilding of a new, more
grandiose city was a gift from God. To paint a picture before the fire of London, Tinniswood called
London smoke polluted with deformed buildings, so much so that the magistrate would not warrant
any extreme haste when fire, which was common among a town full of old wooden buildings,
happened there (11). Furthermore the industries in London polluted the air (12). It is easy to picture
how lowly and poverty stricken the pre fire London really was. In addition to all of this, many people
believed apocalypse and judgment were to befall the great city anyways; that it was only a matter of
time until God was to act there. When the British attacked and sunk the Dutch fleet, there was the
presence in the date of three sixes, the year 1666, and this caused great fear, causing many to consider
this a prophecy, and Londoners of the day took prophecies very seriously. This is pointed out in the
book by astrologer John Booker entitled: New Almanack and Prognostication, which Tinniswood
references in his text (20 21). This grand fanaticism in belief of God s judgment upon London among
the people can be further displayed in some writings of one of the Duke s helpers under Lord
Berkeley. He wrote: Nothing can be like unto the distraction we were in, but the Day of Judgment.
Another fellow wrote different words at the site of winds from all directions spreading

Regulating Kids Diets
Regulating Kids Diets: For Good or Bad? The hot topic right now amongst many schools is if children

many children these days are facing obesity and regulating diets will make children healthier. Initially,
children s diets should be regulated, because these days there are too many children facing obesity. To
begin with, obesity amongst children continues to grow and it needs to be stopped. Specifically,
according to Time for Kids; Obesity Rates Falling from 1980 to 2000 the percentage of obese kids in

their diets need to be regulated. Additionally, obesity in children can be severely harmful at young age.

My Neighbor Totoro Essay
Hayao Miyazaki has directed ten Studio Ghibli films, and many more outside the company. Most of
his films include a form of uncertainty, some of which include technological ambiguity, moral
ambiguity, and the ambiguity of age. The focus of this essay is Miyazaki s ambiguity of age,
specifically through his film My Neighbor Totoro. Through the theme of the ambiguity of age,
Miyazaki is able to show the different characteristics that are maintained through maturing,
characteristics that are left behind, and characteristics that are gained from the process of growing up.
I will focus on the differences of maturity between the two sisters and the father in My Neighbor
Totoro. Miyazaki s film My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and
Mei), their father (Tatsuo), and the family s interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural
Japan (Wikipedia). Satsuki seems to be around ten years old, and Mei seems to be around five years
old. The imbalance of maturity in Satsuki and Mei is first demonstrated when they are running around
their new house. Nothing is explicit about age Miyazaki only shows Satsuki running around the house,
and then shows Mei doing the same thing, but she does it like a young child (Miyazaki 10). This
seemingly small age difference is the foundation of Miyazaki s themes, motifs, and juxtapositions. In
the film, Satsuki and Mei s mother (Yasuko) has a long term illness
and is in the hospital. As a result, the

King Creon In Sophocles Antigone
While reading the Greek play Antigone , written by the playwright Sophocles, one sees that a few of
the characters can be related back to the reader/watcher of the play. For instance, many people can
identify with the protagonist Antigone through her incomparable dedication in following the laws of
beings of greater power. Others might identify with the wise Tiresias, whose wisdom and advice is
given and taught across the land. However, for a fifteen year old boy such as I, I identify the most with

To be able to speak confidently and know what you are talking about is one of the most important
abilities that one needs to convince others to join their cause. Just as King Creon did in his reign over
Thebes, I am able to use my words to the fullest. To cite the play that we had read in class, Creon says:
Polyneices, who broke his exile to come back with fire and sword against his native city and the
shrines of his father s gods, whose one idea was to spill the blood of his blood and sell his own people
into slavery (1, 34 37). When one reads Antigone without first reading the plays Oedipus and Oedipus
at Colonus, what Creon says isn t all that strange. Even so, if one has looked through the first two
plays, one realizes that Creon has used his words to completely change the way that Polyneices is
viewed by the townsfolk. Creon was able to use his words to persuade others into believing that one of
the sons of their old king was attacking Thebes to deface their gods and sell all of them into slavery. In
this sense of character, Creon and I are homogenous beings. Identical to Creon, I can wrap people

Employees And Employees For The Layoff
Layoffs are an inevitable part of any business that affects both employers and employees. Companies
usually decide to do layoffs when they have financial difficulties; financially troubled companies
reduce the number of employees to cut their costs and generate profit. Laying off employees is one of
the toughest decisions that management has to make. Employee reduction is a decision that must be
made carefully and with caution because it involves not only legal issues, but also affects morale in
the company.
If an employee is laid off based on the subjective criteria such as the supervisor s opinion about the
employee s characteristics, the employee can take legal actions against the company. Therefore, the
company must use objective and quantifiable criteria such as the yearly evaluations, productivity, or
seniority to base its decision of whom should be laid off. Also, to prevent legal issues, a company
must have policies, procedures, and layoff criteria in relate on how to choose employees for the layoff.
The policies and dismissal rules must be consistent across the company to preserve morale and
prevent favoritism.
Layoffs affect morale in the company; when employees feel layoffs are unfair or not justified, it
decreases their trust and loyalty and increases their resistance to the change. Therefore, in order to
keep morality at the high level, the company should be honest about the reasons for the layoffs.
Layoffs should not come as a surprise to employees;

The Following Of Jesus Christ
The Following of Jesus Christ Discipleship is the study of theology, having a religion, and being a

Bonhoeffer s writings on the call to discipleship, discipleship and the cross, discipleship and the
individual, and the church of Jesus Christ and discipleship. By learning discipleship through

Christians become the ones who bare other individuals sin and guilt. To sum up the cross it has many

he wrote about discipleship and the individual. This is about how God made people as individuals.
God made us to be alone and be lonely. He did this so we would have someone to go to in these lonely

fact that they believed themselves to be in hostile territory . The one black candidate to make it to the
jury box was removed before the case began, The remaining jurors were 10 whites, one asian, and one
Hispanic. Most of the jurors were very pro police department. Many of the jurors came from military
backgrounds, and others were proud N.R.A. members. The case went from the expected conditions of
a diverse, Los Angeles County court case, to conservative town with a 5 to 1 white to minority jury.
Just like King George taking his officers overseas for their trials prior to the revolutionary war, the
special treatment of these 4 officers would not stand. However, the fate of the officers was in the
hands of those who believed that they did nothing wrong. Their ruling is what set Los Angeles

Essay On The Nullification Crisis
The nullification crisis The nullification crisis was a crisis that began ,1828 when a new tariff was
introduced by Congress that raised the cost of imported manufactured goods. South Carolina was very
disappointed by this, and they campaigned heavily against this tariff. There was defiantly a conflict of
interest in South Carolina because there was a group of people who actually supported the
nullification. These people where known as the nullies. They attempted to pass nullification through
the South Carolina state legislature. However, unionist stood up against the nullies because they felt
that the states didn t hold nullification rights. Nullies felt that the tariff acts of 1828 and 1832 favored
Northern manufacturing at the expense of Southern Farmers. ... Show more content on

Each state retained the right to prevent the enforcement within its borders and John C Calhoun lost
favor with Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson stated Can anyone of common sense believe the
absurdity, that a faction of any state or state has a right to secede and destroy the union and , the
liberty of the country with it? Jackson felt that the union must be preserved and he made sure that he
let that be known. It is believed that Jackson s strong objection to Calhoun stemmed from a scandal
surrounding Jackson s wife Rachel. Jackson s wife was frowned upon because she was viewed as a
bigamist. However, Jackson tried to set the record straight and married his wife legally once her
divorce to her previous husband was finalized. However, that didn t stop the fact that Calhoun s wife
looked down on Jackson s wife Rachel and instructed her friends to do so as well. Jackson s wife was
so overwhelmed with stress that she became ill and later died. Because of all of this Jackson
developed a bad taste in his mouth towards Calhoun and blamed him and his wife for Rachel s demise.
Andrew Jackson s presidency was shaped by two other events. The attempted re chartering

Liberia Civil War Research Paper
Causes of Liberian Civil War
Have you ever been asked if you want long sleeves or short sleeves? If you were asked this, you
thought about shirts. In Liberia during the civil war, if the rebels caught you and asked this question,
they meant do you want your arms cut off at the shoulder or wrist. Liberia is located along the Atlantic
Coast of West Africa and its capital is Monrovia (Vinck, Pham, Kreutzer, 8). There are about 4 million
people and 17 major ethnic groups (9). Liberia s civil war between 1989 and 2003 left hundreds of
thousands dead and many more affected by the extreme violence that ravaged the country (3). There
are several fundamental causes for this devastating civil war and three of them are: the socio economic
policies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1970 s when educated indigenous Liberians protested the raise in rice prices, the Tolbert
government violently put down the protest by killing 40 students and wounding 400 (59). This set the
stage for a group called The People s Revolutionary Council led by Samuel Doe to lead a coup on
April 12, 1980 that took over the government killing President Tolbert and many others (61). Doe
became a dictator who put his ethnic Krahn tribe in charge of everything and took all the natural
resources for his own profit (62). Any ethnic groups not of the Krahn tribe were persecuted and many
were killed (63). Due to the atrocities suffered under Doe s dictatorship, different ethnic groups
formed rebel organizations to try to defeat Doe. Charles Taylor led an invasion into Liberia with the
backing of the Gola and Mano tribes (Global Security, 2). The Gio tribe under Prince Johnson formed
its own rebel force (2). This began a bloody three way war. Although the reason given for the civil war
was to provide different ethnic groups with the right to participate in the government, one of the
factors that drove the warlords was the desire to exploit Liberia s natural

Changes And Changes In The Victorian Era In The Victorian...
Victorian Era Queen Victoria was the longest reigning British monarch in history. Ruling the U.K.
from 1873 to 1901. Queen Victoria s death on January 22, 1901 at the age of 81 was mourned around
the world and signaled an end to the VIctorian Era. For months the Queen s health had been failing.
Victoria had lost her appetite and started looking smaller and smaller. She would become very tired
more easily and would become very confused. The Queen had left very detailed instructions as to how
she wanted her funeral. The instructions included very specific things she wanted inside her coffin.

up to the knee length as against the previous ones reaching the calf.Three piece suits were invented
around 1870s and instantly were a hit among the people. Another change that was brought during this
time was in ties. Neckties were four in hand and a new type, known as Ascot ties soon became
popular.During the mid 1800, dinner jackets were also used for formal occasions. The Norfolk jacket
and woolen breeches came to be used for outdoor activities like shooting. During the winter, men

Ethical and Legal Dilemma in It
Ethical and Legal Dilemma in IT Nanette E. Armstrong Capella University TS5536 Ethical and Legal
Considerations in Information Technology 17 March 2012 Ethical and Legal Dilemma in IT Based on
the definition of cyberethics as given by Tavani, the study of moral, legal, and social issues involving
cybertechnology (2010, pg. 3), law is usually/always a part of cyberethics to one degree or another.
Being right or wrong based on society s value builds the fundamentals of ethics. Moral principles
make up ethics. Values are maintained based on the law, which in turn encourages us to uphold the
laws based on those principles. There are at times when something may be unethical but may still

These primary core values will be the bedrock in which to stand and guide for future student record
developments. Legal and ethical values in IT must be without reservation. When it comes to dealing
with student records and how they are dealt with on a day to day process, from requesting and sending
to/from district to district to reporting to the state/federal levels to storing and retrieving them on the
network they have to be taking seriously enough to outweigh the human justifications, weaknesses,
egos, and faults. These primary core values will be the bedrock in which to stand and guide for future
student record developments. An ethical framework is a way of structuring your deliberation
[discussion] about ethical questions, according to the Center for Ethical Deliberation (Frameworks,
2007). The impact of ethics on technology applications in the schools is decreasing as information is
being passed through the portals without regards to implications on the students future. Within the
student information systems that are used in the schools employees are becoming careless with
students data. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects
the privacy interests of students (National Forum on Education Statistics, 2006, Pg. 2). Employees of

J.M Coetzee s The Harms of Pornography
J.M Coetzee s The Harms of Pornography
As the debate over pornography and its place in society grows hotter every day, several authors in
particular shed a new light on the subject. Both their intuition and insight involving their beliefs can
help the reader a great deal in seeing aspects of this debate that might have otherwise gone without the
consideration that they so deserve. I believe that pornography is not only okay, but is allowing our
country to take a step back and ask ourselves how far we are willing to go and what we are willing to
sacrifice in order to preserve free speech and our rights to personal choice. The argument over
pornography is not merely the debate over right or wrong, but also involves the theory ... Show more

Coetzee goes to great lengths to bring to light indescrepancies and unclarified ideas throughout
MacKinnon s article. One of Coetzee s most prominent points is that the differences between
obscenity and pornography go far beyond a difference in term based on either political or moral
argument.
While at times Coetzee seems to generally disagree with or at least greatly challenge MacKinnon s
ideas, there are times at which the two authors trains of thought almost seem to coincide. One such
issue would be that MacKinnon is not necessarily looking to hunt out all occurrences of pornography
in today s literature and media, but to snuff out the commercial end of it. The end that makes billions
based on women being used by men, and does nothing at all to improve their social standing in our
society. But why must everything be used to bolster the social position of women? It is this topic
specifically that seems to have gone un argued by Coetzee. Coetzee s stand on this issue of
pornography and obscenity as a part of today s culture is never quite addressed may very well remain
a mystery to the reader. From many of the author s statements and criticism s of MacKinnon, one
could gather that he takes a much more liberal stand and yet somehow successfully avoids pressing his
opinions. He also does a wonderful

The Two Main Hormone Drugs
What are the two main hormone drugs?
The two mainstream hormone drugs are progesterone and norgestrel. Progesterone and norgestrel are
drugs used to control the female hormones to aid in preventing pregnancy. Progesterone is a steroid
hormone released by the corpus luteum, which is a hormone secreting structure that develops in an
ovary after an ovum has been discharged but degenerates after a few days unless pregnancy has
begun, that stimulates the uterus to prepare for pregnancy. Hormones are chemical messengers that are
secreted directly into the blood, which carries them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their
functions. Progesterone works by traveling in the blood to tissues where there are progesterone
receptors. Progesterone molecules attach to the receptors and commence their actions in the ... Show

There are many types of birth control including condoms, IUDs, birth control pills, vasectomy, etc.
Condoms are one of the most popular forms of birth control. They come in many shapes and sizes,
with and without lube. They slip over the penis to prevent pregnancy and lower the risk of STIs by
keeping sperm inside of the condom and not in your vagina. An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small t
shaped device that is inserted in your uterus by your doctor. It is plastic and wrapped in copper or
contains hormones. There is a plastic string tied to the of the IUD that hangs down from the cervix
into the vagina. You can check that the IUD is in place by feeling for this string. The string is also
used by your doctor to remove the IUD. There are two types of IUDs, hormonal and copper IUD. The
hormonal IUD prevents fertilization by damaging or killing the sperm and making the mucus in the
cervix big and gooey. It keeps the lining of the uterus from growing very thick. That makes the lining
a very poor place for a fertilized egg to implant and grown. The hormones in this IUD stops the

How Does Elie Wiesel Use Dramatic Irony In Night
The number of students in the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools District could be multiplied by five
hundred to reach the number of Jewish deaths during the Holocaust. This number would equal six
million lives. Of these six million, one million were at the Auschwitz complex, where the family of
Elie Wiesel was killed. Known as the world s largest graveyard, Auschwitz was the last place many
Jewish people knew, including Elie s mother and sister, who were killed immediately upon arrival.
Elie was only 15 when he was taken from his home in Sighet, Hungary to the concentration camp of
Auschwitz Birkenau in 1944, but the persecution of the Jews began as early as 1933. Many have
speculated why the victims of the Holocaust did not see their fate ... Show more content on

This situational irony is used to show how the blinding optimism and denial of the Jews contradicts
what will actually happen to them. One source of situational irony shows how the expectations
differed from reality when The families arrived in Auschwitz with their most treasured possessions
packed into suitcases. On the outside of each case, the unsuspecting owners wrote their names and
dates of birth, believing their things would be returned (Winfrey Wiesel). The fact that the Jews are
being forced into cars meant for animals and taken to what would be most of their deaths is so
different from what the Jewish people expected. The Jews believe they are being taken to eastern
Europe, and this journey is just a small relocation, so they can live in safety until the war is over. They
pack their finest possessions for their stay, when their belongings would actually be taken from them
as soon as they get to the camps. This optimistic look on the deportation is responsible for the
unpreparedness of the Jews. Their expectations differ from their new reality, and they are unsure of
what they can do to help themselves once they get there. Situational irony is also shown in Night as
the Jews attempt to pack for the camp with food, and Elie describes, The women were cooking eggs,
roasting meat, baking cakes, and making knapsacks (Wiesel 25). The Jewish

Cancer Pathogenesis Of Cancer
There has been a spontaneous advancement in the understanding the pathogenesis of cancer over the
last two decades. Even though there has been a significant success in the knowledge of tumor, there
still a wide gap in the treatment of tumors. There is a little treatment information available on cancer
making it difficult to control it. Chemotherapy remains the only effective treatment method used. This
study aims at examining the possible roles of the p53 gene in leukemia and how that data can be
utilized for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Due to its potent tumor suppressive activity, a molecular understanding of p53 action will create
significant experiences into specific procedures that limit tumor growth and may identify key ... Show

There are essentially two pathways that transduce signs to start apoptosis in leukemia. The primary
route is the extrinsic pathway. It includes the trimerization of death factors like CD95/Fas/APO 1 or
TNF receptor one which initiates caspase 8, which initiates the apoptotic machinery. The second
pathway is the intrinsic pathway. This pathway involves the p53 gene and is subsequently of more
concern. The p53 gene initiates the arrival of cytochrome C from the mitochondrial intermembrane
space into the cytosol. The cytochrome C in the presence of ATP reasons the oligomerization and
activation of Apaf 1 and caspase 9 as per Schuler, (2000).
Therefore, then prompt caspase three and other effector caspases that cause apoptosis. By utilizing this
data, experiments have been carried out that try to induce apoptosis in cancer cells by activation of the
p53 gene. One particular examination was done on the human osteosarcoma cell line Saos 2, which is
deficient in p53. According to Schuler (2000), an introduction of the p53 gene led to apoptosis through
an intrinsic pathway. Subsequently subjecting p53 to gene treatment might be of enormous importance
in the battle against leukemia.
According to Liu (1994), it has additionally been discovered that p53 mutant tumors are more unstable
genetically and this state of instability may enable the tumors to become more rapidly resistant to drug
treatments.
Since p53

Speech On The Hitler Youth
Speaking on the Hitler Youth, and just how violently anti Semitic the group was, Jewish survivor
Marcel Back explained, On Sundays we like to go have a nice excursion in the forest, and then you
saw a few of those so you tried to avoid to get close to them because they could beat you up (USC SFI
VHA, Marcel Back). Another survivor, Fred Berdach noted, There were Hitler Youth on the streets
[...] and they became bullies. You were bullied in the streets, you were bullied in the schools, you were
bullied anywhere and everywhere (USC SFI VHA, Fred Berdach). Berdach s account was in reference
to the evolution of the Hitler Youth in 1938, just three years before the beginning of the mass killing.
Many of the then Hitler Youth members would have been eligible to become soldiers in WWII, as well
as the older ex members. Perhaps the Hitler Youth members played the roles of enforcers of the killing
program and pressured others into doing the same. A further demonstration of latent prejudice in
twentieth century societies contributing to genocide is the lack of large scale support for the Jews from
outsiders. According to Shlomo Aronson, the Allied Powers had influence in the Holocaust and could
have taken steps to lessen the plight of the Jews, but instead turned a blind eye (Aronson, pp.266).
Citing three sets of circumstances influencing Allied decisions to not intervene, Aronson noted that the
Allies were not keen on being depicted as Jew sympathizers and were in fact very

  • 2. Merinos Research Paper The merino was originally bred in Spain. Spain is a country that has warm climate like Australia. Merinos are known to have fine wool that is really suitable for spinning and weaving into a fine fibre that many people use to produce clothing. John and Elizabeth Macarthur got married in Devonshire in England in 1788. In 1790, on June 28, John Macarthur and his wife Elizabeth Macarthur arrived in Port Jackson with their son Edward. • 3. Literary Devices Of Scene In Faking It By Michael Chabon Most authors who implement the literary device of scene in their writing do so to establish an entry point to the universal subject they are trying to portray. In literature, scene is an experience or moment that the author explains in great detail through various devices in order to perceive that time is slowed. In Faking It , Michael Chabon does exactly this, utilizing a scene to introduce the main point of his chapter. In my essay, ________ , I made a conscience effort to mimic this literary device; however, failed to properly utilize it as an entry point. At the forefront of Faking It , Michael Chabon paints a descriptive scene in which he was attempting to install a towel rack in the bathroom. To start the chapter, Chabon dictated that the only reason he was granted this chore was because he knew, kind of, how to use an electric drill. He then provided a descriptive image of his efforts, explaining how he read the instruction while sagely stroking [his] whiskers...[looking] as if [he] knew what [he] was doing and then proceeded to [drop] one of the metal towel bars onto [his] right thumb . Chabon continually comments and hints at his inexperience and that he was forced to sustain the appearance of competence . This passage is a perfectly crafted depiction of a scene: Chabon utilized both imagery and diction to illustrate a man who was unaware of how to install a towel rack, yet felt compelled and pressured into assuming the responsibility of doing so and ... A lookout guard for the city brought some terrible news to the king. Their enemy had unexpectedly come to fight them. They were very close to the city. The army was large and very powerful. The situation looked frightening for King Jehoshaphat and his people. The first thing that Jehoshaphat did was to pray and ask God for help. He asked all the people not to eat for the day. Instead, he asked them to pray and ask God for help. Then, King Jehoshaphat stood in front of the people and prayed to God. He praised God for how powerful and wonderful He was. Mainly minor responsibilities can be avoided and unanswered, but major ones need to be questioned and brought to attention in order for them to be dealt with. Sex discrimination is one of those mistakes that people are constantly making. It isn t happening as much as it used to in the past, but it is still occurring in our education system, employment, housing, and even in something as small as credit. There are large episodes in past time that we are able to track down and see examples of sex discrimination towards females, especially in education. From as early as birth, women are being discriminated against just because they are supposedly inferior to men. This was all put to a stop when Title IX was formed. Title IX s main objective is to protect people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. The motto that we follow is No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance . • 11. The Emergency Department ( Ed ) Background Length of stay in the Emergency Department (ED) is one important aspect of healthcare that can affect patient satisfaction as well as the number of patients that can be seen by a physician in a day. Length of stay (LOS) is measured as the time a person spends at the ED between arrival and departure (1). A longer LOS will not only affect patient satisfaction negatively by creating unnecessary frustrations, but can also cause ED overcrowding, leading to poor patient care (2). The number of ED visits in the U.S. i.s approximately 129.8 million in 2010 and is continuing to rise (10). The issue of ED overcrowding has gained national attention due to many problems, such as a decrease in hospital bed availability (3), an increase in hospital mortality, and an increase in the number of patients leaving the ED before being seen by a physician (4). It has then become increasingly evident that in order to improve patient care and ED flow, it is necessary to examine factors associated with longer LOS in the ED. The purpose of this study is to examine specifically the patient population that presents to the emergency department with suicidal ideation (SI), due to the lack of literature regarding the topic of LOS in patients with suicidal ideation. Considering how vulnerable suicidal patients are, it is even more crucial to provide prompt and timely care to them, and find ways to reduce their LOS in the ED. Oddly, reparation for the sin of lust draws Dante back to his past as a lyric love poet, although such a life is notorious for its connotations with sensuality. However, this placement indicates a central theme of the Divine Comedy: to ascend to God, Dante must learn to love Him. Sankhambi plays a big part in many Venda folktales and is very alike to Hlakanyana from Zulu Folklore. He takes on many different shapes and sizes in these tales but one thing for certain is wherever he is there is always trouble. They were not nearly as nimble or quick as they are today, and there body shape was much different. Sankhambi had a lot of fun sneaking up behind the monkeys and pulling their tails. Obviously the monkeys were not too happy about this and would throw seeds and bits at him from high in the tree tops while he lay there basking in the sun. Sankhambi hated the monkey business and one day he decided that he was going to put a stop to it. In John Milton s Paradise Lost, the parallelism between Satan and Eve s fall is strong in that they were once both the highest before pure perfection. Lucifer is associated with evil, which stems from his free will leading to his rebellion against God and, ultimately, his great fall. He is known as the one who introduces sin to Adam and Eve the first humans to ever exist. His plan to go against God is the beginning of a whole new world to the universe and a whole new significance of himself as the one known for human error and evil. However, craving independence from God ferociously backfires on Satan when he finds out that even after leaving hell, he cannot escape it, which way [he] [flies] is Hell, [he] [himself] is Hell, (IV, 75). Satan finds his way to revolt against and separate from God to overrule Heaven and become king, instead however, he takes on the role of the representation of all evil which is evidently seen in his interactions with Eve. Eve s hunger to become independent from Adam and all she is commanded to do is similar to Satan s situation in that their yearn for power and singular identity lead them to revolt against their creator. Her desire to separate from Adam is first seen when she is introduced to the audience in her state of narcissism. She sees a reflection of herself in a pond and is in awe of her beauty of sympathy and love, (IV, 465) which shows the parallelism to Satan s own arrogant vanity. He catches on to this similarity they share and decides she will be an easy target of persuasion. He quickly takes charge and plans how he will lead her to eat the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, which is the only tree that God prohibited to pick fruit from. • 22. Contemporary Ethical Issues In Utilitarianism There are many contemporary ethical problems that societies face without having a solid response. Most of these problems come from the conflict caused by the different ways these problems can be interpreted. There are also many ethical theories that defend the different views to such problems. Among these theories we can mention Virtue Ethics, Utilitarianism, Kantianism, etc. I think there is one of these theories that is very interesting in nature: Utilitarianism. In this work I will be giving a brief explanation of Utilitarianism, as well as discussing the character of consequentialist or not consequentialist of this ethical theory. Also, I will analyze each of the contemporary issues studied in this unit based on Utilitarianism, as well as mentioning anecdotes that pertain to such conflicts. Like other forms of consequentialism, utilitarianism s core idea is that whether actions are morally right or wrong depends on their effects (). Utilitarianism is a moral principle that holds that the morally right course of action in any situation is the one that produces the greatest balance of benefits over harms for everyone affected (). The only problem I see with this ethical theory is that an action that could be generally considered unethical can be the one that produces the most value for the greatest amount of people; therefore, that unethical action will be an ethical action under the utilitarian view. The statistics produced by the Bank for International Settlements show that about 58.5% of all over the counter derivatives are interest rate swaps and a further 4% are currency swaps. A swap is an over the counter agreement between two parties to exchange cash flows in the future. The agreement defines the dates when the cash flows are to be paid and the way in which they are to be calculated. Usually the calculation of the cash flows involves the future value of an interest rate, an exchange rate, or other market variable. The most popular (plain vanilla) interest rate swap is one where LIBOR is exchanged for a floating rate of interest. In this swap, one party agrees to pay the other party interest at a fixed rate on a notional principal for a number of years. In return, it receives interest at a floating rate on the same notional principal for the same period of time. Principal amounts are not usually exchanged in the interest rate swap. Take another popular swap as an interpretation for hedging and speculation, which is currency swap. In its simplest form, this involves paying interest on a principal amount in one currency and receiving interest on a principal in another currency. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His incredible brush technique and his masterful appreciation of human nature combined to create a humongous impact on his peers as well as influencing tons of artists of later years.1 He was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Netherlands, a small city located in the Dutch province of South Holland. Rembrandt was born into a large family, the eighth of nine children. His father, Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn, was a miller, and his mother, Neeltgen Willemsd van Zuytbroeck, was the daughter of a baker. Rembrandt studied at Latin school for seven years before enrolling in university in 1620, before leaving after only a few months to become an apprentice to the painter for Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh.2 After working under Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh for three years, Rembrandt left for Amsterdam, to work with Pieter Lastman, in 1624. While many artists in the 17th century felt like they needed to travel to Italy to fulfill their artistic training, Rembrandt never left Holland once in his entire life, taking pride in his Dutch nationality.3 Pieter Lastman was one of the most respected experts in historical paintings in all of Holland, as his inspiration in his works came mostly from mythological, historical, and biblical scenes. Causes of the Great Fire of London Essay James Jonathan Gray Hist 3372 Fall 2009 Dr.Willis According to Adrian Tinniswood, seventeenth century Londoners vacillated between seeing the Great Fire of London as an act of terrorism and an act of god. What were the major components of these explanations and why were contemporaries so eager to search for a reason for the calamity other than simple accident. Was the Great fire of London an act of terrorism or an act of God? There are numerous explanations that attribute to the belief in either. This contributed to many a belief that the fire that paved the way for a rebuilding of a new, more grandiose city was a gift from God. To paint a picture before the fire of London, Tinniswood called London smoke polluted with deformed buildings, so much so that the magistrate would not warrant any extreme haste when fire, which was common among a town full of old wooden buildings, happened there (11). Furthermore the industries in London polluted the air (12). It is easy to picture how lowly and poverty stricken the pre fire London really was. In addition to all of this, many people believed apocalypse and judgment were to befall the great city anyways; that it was only a matter of time until God was to act there. When the British attacked and sunk the Dutch fleet, there was the presence in the date of three sixes, the year 1666, and this caused great fear, causing many to consider this a prophecy, and Londoners of the day took prophecies very seriously. This is pointed out in the book by astrologer John Booker entitled: New Almanack and Prognostication, which Tinniswood references in his text (20 21). This grand fanaticism in belief of God s judgment upon London among the people can be further displayed in some writings of one of the Duke s helpers under Lord Berkeley. Most of his films include a form of uncertainty, some of which include technological ambiguity, moral ambiguity, and the ambiguity of age. The focus of this essay is Miyazaki s ambiguity of age, specifically through his film My Neighbor Totoro. Through the theme of the ambiguity of age, Miyazaki is able to show the different characteristics that are maintained through maturing, characteristics that are left behind, and characteristics that are gained from the process of growing up. I will focus on the differences of maturity between the two sisters and the father in My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki s film My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei), their father (Tatsuo), and the family s interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan (Wikipedia). Satsuki seems to be around ten years old, and Mei seems to be around five years old. The imbalance of maturity in Satsuki and Mei is first demonstrated when they are running around their new house. Nothing is explicit about age Miyazaki only shows Satsuki running around the house, and then shows Mei doing the same thing, but she does it like a young child (Miyazaki 10). To cite the play that we had read in class, Creon says: Polyneices, who broke his exile to come back with fire and sword against his native city and the shrines of his father s gods, whose one idea was to spill the blood of his blood and sell his own people into slavery (1, 34 37). When one reads Antigone without first reading the plays Oedipus and Oedipus at Colonus, what Creon says isn t all that strange. Even so, if one has looked through the first two plays, one realizes that Creon has used his words to completely change the way that Polyneices is viewed by the townsfolk. Creon was able to use his words to persuade others into believing that one of the sons of their old king was attacking Thebes to deface their gods and sell all of them into slavery. • 35. Employees And Employees For The Layoff Layoffs are an inevitable part of any business that affects both employers and employees. Companies usually decide to do layoffs when they have financial difficulties; financially troubled companies reduce the number of employees to cut their costs and generate profit. Laying off employees is one of the toughest decisions that management has to make. Employee reduction is a decision that must be made carefully and with caution because it involves not only legal issues, but also affects morale in the company. If an employee is laid off based on the subjective criteria such as the supervisor s opinion about the employee s characteristics, the employee can take legal actions against the company. Therefore, the company must use objective and quantifiable criteria such as the yearly evaluations, productivity, or seniority to base its decision of whom should be laid off. Also, to prevent legal issues, a company must have policies, procedures, and layoff criteria in relate on how to choose employees for the layoff. The policies and dismissal rules must be consistent across the company to preserve morale and prevent favoritism. Layoffs affect morale in the company; when employees feel layoffs are unfair or not justified, it decreases their trust and loyalty and increases their resistance to the change. Any ethnic groups not of the Krahn tribe were persecuted and many were killed (63). Due to the atrocities suffered under Doe s dictatorship, different ethnic groups formed rebel organizations to try to defeat Doe. Charles Taylor led an invasion into Liberia with the backing of the Gola and Mano tribes (Global Security, 2). The Gio tribe under Prince Johnson formed its own rebel force (2). This began a bloody three way war. Although the reason given for the civil war was to provide different ethnic groups with the right to participate in the government, one of the factors that drove the warlords was the desire to exploit Liberia s natural ... • 43. Changes And Changes In The Victorian Era In The Victorian... Victorian Era Queen Victoria was the longest reigning British monarch in history. Ruling the U.K. from 1873 to 1901. Queen Victoria s death on January 22, 1901 at the age of 81 was mourned around the world and signaled an end to the VIctorian Era. For months the Queen s health had been failing. Victoria had lost her appetite and started looking smaller and smaller. She would become very tired more easily and would become very confused. The Queen had left very detailed instructions as to how she wanted her funeral. The instructions included very specific things she wanted inside her coffin. Many of the items she wanted were from her beloved husband, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The neckties were wider and were to be tied in a bow or looped into a loose knot and tied with a stickpin. Another change that took place was that the frock coats became shorter. Another change that was brought during this time was in ties. Neckties were four in hand and a new type, known as Ascot ties soon became popular.During the mid 1800, dinner jackets were also used for formal occasions. The Norfolk jacket and woolen breeches came to be used for outdoor activities like shooting. Armstrong Capella University TS5536 Ethical and Legal Considerations in Information Technology 17 March 2012 Ethical and Legal Dilemma in IT Based on the definition of cyberethics as given by Tavani, the study of moral, legal, and social issues involving cybertechnology (2010, pg. 3), law is usually/always a part of cyberethics to one degree or another. Being right or wrong based on society s value builds the fundamentals of ethics. Moral principles make up ethics. Values are maintained based on the law, which in turn encourages us to uphold the laws based on those principles. There are at times when something may be unethical but may still uphold the law and the values are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These primary core values will be the bedrock in which to stand and guide for future student record developments. Legal and ethical values in IT must be without reservation. When it comes to dealing with student records and how they are dealt with on a day to day process, from requesting and sending to/from district to district to reporting to the state/federal levels to storing and retrieving them on the network they have to be taking seriously enough to outweigh the human justifications, weaknesses, egos, and faults. These primary core values will be the bedrock in which to stand and guide for future student record developments. An ethical framework is a way of structuring your deliberation [discussion] about ethical questions, according to the Center for Ethical Deliberation (Frameworks, 2007). The impact of ethics on technology applications in the schools is decreasing as information is being passed through the portals without regards to implications on the students future. Within the student information systems that are used in the schools employees are becoming careless with students data. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy interests of students (National Forum on Education Statistics, 2006, Pg. 2). Employees of the ... • 45. J.M Coetzee s The Harms of Pornography J.M Coetzee s The Harms of Pornography As the debate over pornography and its place in society grows hotter every day, several authors in particular shed a new light on the subject. Both their intuition and insight involving their beliefs can help the reader a great deal in seeing aspects of this debate that might have otherwise gone without the consideration that they so deserve. I believe that pornography is not only okay, but is allowing our country to take a step back and ask ourselves how far we are willing to go and what we are willing to sacrifice in order to preserve free speech and our rights to personal choice. The argument over pornography is not merely the debate over right or wrong, but also involves the theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Coetzee goes to great lengths to bring to light indescrepancies and unclarified ideas throughout MacKinnon s article. One of Coetzee s most prominent points is that the differences between obscenity and pornography go far beyond a difference in term based on either political or moral argument. While at times Coetzee seems to generally disagree with or at least greatly challenge MacKinnon s ideas, there are times at which the two authors trains of thought almost seem to coincide. One such issue would be that MacKinnon is not necessarily looking to hunt out all occurrences of pornography in today s literature and media, but to snuff out the commercial end of it. The end that makes billions based on women being used by men, and does nothing at all to improve their social standing in our society. But why must everything be used to bolster the social position of women? It is this topic specifically that seems to have gone un argued by Coetzee. Coetzee s stand on this issue of pornography and obscenity as a part of today s culture is never quite addressed may very well remain a mystery to the reader. From many of the author s statements and criticism s of MacKinnon, one could gather that he takes a much more liberal stand and yet somehow successfully avoids pressing his opinions. He also does a wonderful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Two Main Hormone Drugs What are the two main hormone drugs? The two mainstream hormone drugs are progesterone and norgestrel. Progesterone and norgestrel are drugs used to control the female hormones to aid in preventing pregnancy. Progesterone is a steroid hormone released by the corpus luteum, which is a hormone secreting structure that develops in an ovary after an ovum has been discharged but degenerates after a few days unless pregnancy has begun, that stimulates the uterus to prepare for pregnancy. Hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted directly into the blood, which carries them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their functions. Progesterone works by traveling in the blood to tissues where there are progesterone receptors. Progesterone molecules attach to the receptors and commence their actions in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many types of birth control including condoms, IUDs, birth control pills, vasectomy, etc. Condoms are one of the most popular forms of birth control. They come in many shapes and sizes, with and without lube. They slip over the penis to prevent pregnancy and lower the risk of STIs by keeping sperm inside of the condom and not in your vagina. An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small t shaped device that is inserted in your uterus by your doctor. It is plastic and wrapped in copper or contains hormones. There is a plastic string tied to the of the IUD that hangs down from the cervix into the vagina. You can check that the IUD is in place by feeling for this string. The string is also used by your doctor to remove the IUD. There are two types of IUDs, hormonal and copper IUD. The hormonal IUD prevents fertilization by damaging or killing the sperm and making the mucus in the cervix big and gooey. It keeps the lining of the uterus from growing very thick. That makes the lining a very poor place for a fertilized egg to implant and grown. The hormones in this IUD stops the cramping and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. How Does Elie Wiesel Use Dramatic Irony In Night The number of students in the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools District could be multiplied by five hundred to reach the number of Jewish deaths during the Holocaust. This number would equal six million lives. Of these six million, one million were at the Auschwitz complex, where the family of Elie Wiesel was killed. Known as the world s largest graveyard, Auschwitz was the last place many Jewish people knew, including Elie s mother and sister, who were killed immediately upon arrival. Elie was only 15 when he was taken from his home in Sighet, Hungary to the concentration camp of Auschwitz Birkenau in 1944, but the persecution of the Jews began as early as 1933. Many have speculated why the victims of the Holocaust did not see their fate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This situational irony is used to show how the blinding optimism and denial of the Jews contradicts what will actually happen to them. One source of situational irony shows how the expectations differed from reality when The families arrived in Auschwitz with their most treasured possessions packed into suitcases. On the outside of each case, the unsuspecting owners wrote their names and dates of birth, believing their things would be returned (Winfrey Wiesel). The fact that the Jews are being forced into cars meant for animals and taken to what would be most of their deaths is so different from what the Jewish people expected. The Jews believe they are being taken to eastern Europe, and this journey is just a small relocation, so they can live in safety until the war is over. They pack their finest possessions for their stay, when their belongings would actually be taken from them as soon as they get to the camps. This optimistic look on the deportation is responsible for the unpreparedness of the Jews. Their expectations differ from their new reality, and they are unsure of what they can do to help themselves once they get there. Situational irony is also shown in Night as the Jews attempt to pack for the camp with food, and Elie describes, The women were cooking eggs, roasting meat, baking cakes, and making knapsacks (Wiesel 25). • 48. Cancer Pathogenesis Of Cancer There has been a spontaneous advancement in the understanding the pathogenesis of cancer over the last two decades. Even though there has been a significant success in the knowledge of tumor, there still a wide gap in the treatment of tumors. There is a little treatment information available on cancer making it difficult to control it. Chemotherapy remains the only effective treatment method used. This study aims at examining the possible roles of the p53 gene in leukemia and how that data can be utilized for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Due to its potent tumor suppressive activity, a molecular understanding of p53 action will create significant experiences into specific procedures that limit tumor growth and may identify key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are essentially two pathways that transduce signs to start apoptosis in leukemia. The primary route is the extrinsic pathway. It includes the trimerization of death factors like CD95/Fas/APO 1 or TNF receptor one which initiates caspase 8, which initiates the apoptotic machinery. The second pathway is the intrinsic pathway. This pathway involves the p53 gene and is subsequently of more concern. The p53 gene initiates the arrival of cytochrome C from the mitochondrial intermembrane space into the cytosol. The cytochrome C in the presence of ATP reasons the oligomerization and activation of Apaf 1 and caspase 9 as per Schuler, (2000). Therefore, then prompt caspase three and other effector caspases that cause apoptosis. By utilizing this data, experiments have been carried out that try to induce apoptosis in cancer cells by activation of the p53 gene. One particular examination was done on the human osteosarcoma cell line Saos 2, which is deficient in p53. According to Schuler (2000), an introduction of the p53 gene led to apoptosis through an intrinsic pathway. Subsequently subjecting p53 to gene treatment might be of enormous importance in the battle against leukemia. According to Liu (1994), it has additionally been discovered that p53 mutant tumors are more unstable genetically and this state of instability may enable the tumors to become more rapidly resistant to drug treatments. • 49. Speech On The Hitler Youth Speaking on the Hitler Youth, and just how violently anti Semitic the group was, Jewish survivor Marcel Back explained, On Sundays we like to go have a nice excursion in the forest, and then you saw a few of those so you tried to avoid to get close to them because they could beat you up (USC SFI VHA, Marcel Back). Another survivor, Fred Berdach noted, There were Hitler Youth on the streets [...] and they became bullies. You were bullied in the streets, you were bullied in the schools, you were bullied anywhere and everywhere (USC SFI VHA, Fred Berdach). Berdach s account was in reference to the evolution of the Hitler Youth in 1938, just three years before the beginning of the mass killing. Many of the then Hitler Youth members would have been eligible to become soldiers in WWII, as well as the older ex members. Perhaps the Hitler Youth members played the roles of enforcers of the killing program and pressured others into doing the same. A further demonstration of latent prejudice in twentieth century societies contributing to genocide is the lack of large scale support for the Jews from outsiders. According to Shlomo Aronson, the Allied Powers had influence in the Holocaust and could have taken steps to lessen the plight of the Jews, but instead turned a blind eye (Aronson, pp.266). Citing three sets of circumstances influencing Allied decisions to not intervene, Aronson noted that the Allies were not keen on being depicted as Jew sympathizers and were in fact very ...
