Raskolnikov Motives
The Renewal of Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment
Raskolnikov, in Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment, is a complex character difficult to
understand. He believes himself superior to the rest of humanity, and therefore he believes he has
the right to commit murder. After he kills Alena Ivanovna, an old pawnbroker, Raskolnikov
discovers his supposed superiority has cut him off from other people. He exists in a self created
alienation from the world around him. Raskolnikov mearly drifts through life, unable to participate
in it anymore. It is only through Sonya that Raskolnikov is able to gradually regain his connection
to humanity; she helps him to understand that, although he cannot be superior to others, she loves

He tells himself that his actions are not the same as those of the peasants, who acted only out of
malicious cruelty. His motives are quite different. Raskolnikov believes that he can use Alena
Ivanovna s money to help his mother and sister, who are extremely poor. Thus, he initially
convinces himself that he is willing to perform this act of violence in order to benefit his family.
This motivation is secondary to a darker one. Raskolnikov believes in Hegel s idea of the World
historical individual, one who commits extraordinary deeds which may be forbidden to the rest
of society but are permitted to an elite few. Hegel believed that the actions of these world
historical individuals had such a profound influence upon their societies that the criminal or
violent nature of their deeds was justified by the larger good they accomplished. Thus, Napoleon
s military victories cost thousands of men their lives, yet he was justified in disregarding these
losses as the inevitable costs of his rise to power, which he used to improve French society as a
whole, instituting sweeping reforms in religion, education , the judicial system, and other areas.
Raskolnikov explains to Porfiry later that those with new ideas to

Short Essay # 2 Short Essay on Christology
What is the biblical basis for Jesus humanity?
Jesus humanity was and is far from being comparable to ours as man created from the ground than
to Him coming to form through Spirit. On the other hand being born from a sinless virtue.
What is the biblical basis for deity?
Several basis of deity is that demonstration would show of God like attributes, teachings being
consistent and correspond to the wisdom of God. As Jesus deity he showed all the above that I had
mentioned as well as claiming to be God. As well as it says in the Bible John 1:1, the Word was God

That to Him is saying that you are the son of the father of lies.
What are the common objections to the traditional understanding of Christology, and how do you
respond to them?
Some objections were it being a philosophical idea than it being historical revelation. Another
was that there is no divine production of the world or there being three different people but as a
union. There s another one saying that Jesus didn t fully become man and didn t have the true
things of man. How I would respond to this is by starting off with saying yes it is true that He
didn t fully become man, but He still have all things that man have reason is because He would
not be able to come to save our souls and prolong our lives as well as being kept from
condemnation to the point where you won t have no chance to tell God who you are. We would
have been sent straight to hell without no anymore chances at all. But for Apollinaris saying He
didn t have any man like qualities or attributes that will show that He has came to us as a man.
In what ways is Christ in his humanity an example to you?
He is an example to me in a way that Love will and can conquer all. Also, being led by the Father
leads you in the right direction, give you knowledge and wisdom to do or say. That trusting in Him
you can receive things that are really more substantial than material

United Way Of El Paso
United Way is a non profit organization that helps improve the livelihood in local communities. I
have been fortunate enough to see the impact United has provided from community donations and
its funded agencies in El Paso. Hegel developed the Systems Theory in the 18th century and the best
way to describe the organizations audience is in comparison to the organizations structure and
function. University of Twente (2016) believes communication occurs among interdependent units
that work together to adapt to an ever changing environment. United Way of El Paso County strives
address issues in areas of education, homelessness, and economical stability. I will talk about how
the organization addresses these issues to their donors, agencies, and the families they support. The
organizations objective is to target multiple audiences and the programs structure is important to
separate the different groups they support. The United Way is a non profit organizationthat has a
team that works hard to find donors for the list of agencies they support. Typically a non profit
organization choses agencies that get little to no help from the local government. United Way
(2016) This is accomplished by achieving measurable results through strategies that focus on
community systems and resources and by focusing on funding programs that achieve outcomes in
three select impact areas: Education, Basic Needs, and Income. In most cases United Way reaches
out to local businesses and major

What Is The Verbiage Of The Magna Carta
The original Magna Carta signed by King John under the pressure of the English barons on June
15, 1215, marked an immeasurable change in the law in regards to the power of the sovereign in
England. While that first draft was only in use for a short time, the subsequent drafts and additions
by medieval and early modern kings and queens influenced law in continental Europe and the
Americas. The ideas outlined in the original charter contain not only medieval material but ideas,
perhaps not explicitly named, that are still prevalent and fundamental rights that Americans and
citizens of the United Kingdom continue to relish today. Ideas such as due process, trial by a jury
of peers, and even the origins of habeas corpusare found within the 61 clauses of this 800 year old
document. Clauses 39 and 40 represent those three fundamental, essential rights that cannot and
should not be deprived. The Magna Cartaand its articulation of due process before the law, trial
by a jury of peers, and habeas corpus were meant as a means of infringing on the power of the
tyrannical sovereign and it sparked the fight for personal liberties in England and the American
Colonies and in doing so has become a staple of Common Law.
Studying the verbiage of the Magna Carta is important, but the background and reasons for its
creation dictate how its original meaning can be interpreted by a modern scholar. The Battle of
Bouvines and the loss of England s landholdings in France was a catalyst for the creation of the
Magna Carta, but Henry II and King John had made decisions that had royally angered the barons
long before 1214. Throughout John s reign, the barons felt an increase in feudal obligations: they
were forced to provide more soldiers, take more subtenants, marry into undesirable alliances, and
their feudal courts power was being usurped by the royal courts and chancery. King John had been
excommunicated for not agreeing with Pope Innocent III s candidate for Archbishop of Canterbury,
and in doing so excommunicated the subjects of England. Combine all of those issues with losing
the duchies held by the Angevin Kings, and quite reasonably, there would be anger. In a society
where land is the cornerstone to profit and

Essay about Emory Healthcare s New System to Reduce Errors
During the 1980 s and 90 s there were many studies done that showed that medical errors were
occurring in inpatient and outpatient settings at a very high rate. Computer Provider Order Entry
(CPOE) systems were designed to reduce or eliminate mistakes made by using hand written orders.
The CPOE system allows users to directly enter their orders into the system on computers which
are then sent directly to the healthcare providers that will be implementing the orders. Previously
orders were placed by writing on order sheets on patient charts. This was sometimes done by the
doctoror by a nurse acting on behalf of the doctor. Order sheets were then signed by the doctor and
then the information was input into the patient s record. This left... Show more content on

Some doctors believed that the CPOE system did not improve the quality of care as you needed to
be computer literate in order to use it.
The change from the manual system to the CPOE system was met with mixed reactions.
Classes were held to train employees with the system and Emory used Application Content Experts,
healthcare workers that had received special training in the CPOE system, as assistants to those
needing help, and a special hotline was set up to help with any questions.
In my opinion it was a good decision for Emory to implement the CPOE system as it will limit
the number of errors occurring and in the end save costs and lives. It was also a good decision to
roll out system out in one of their smaller units as an initial trial run. They were able to work out
some of the bugs in the system by doing so. They also did a good job with their training and the
ACE assistants and implementing the hot line.
Although all of those steps were positive, they should have offered additional training and they
should make extra training available for those that request it. In order for Emory to have a smooth
roll out when they introduce the CPOE system at EUHM they will need to more clearly define the
roles of the users of the system in order to reduce redundancies in the orders and clarifying the
responsibilities of the

The Princess Bride Film Analysis
It is remarkably difficult to narrow down a favorite movie because I have a few, however the
one film that I have already watched numerous times and still plan on watching many more
would have to be The Princess Bride. It is a story based on the book by S. Morgenstern s classic
tale of true love and high adventure abridged with the good parts version by William Goldman
who later translated it to screenplay. The book was actually written as a nonexistent political satire,
however this story is also infused with excerpts from Goldman s fictional life. The filmpreserves
this unique structure to tell a story within a story by using the actors Peter Faulk and Fred Savage
as grandfather and sick grandson, respectively. The Princess Bride uses a variety of techniques from
acting technique, cinematography, narrativestructure, the potential for societal impact, style, genre,
and sound to reveal a satire of the common fairy tale, while simultaneously becoming one of the
most cherished movies for over thirty years.
The illusion of movement is introduced fairly early in the film as the story opens with Buttercup
riding her horse across the field in order to torment the farm boy, Westley, working on her farm. We
also witness the illusion of movement after Princess Buttercup has been kidnapped and ... Show

Kautilya s Theories On War Essay
Kautilya s Theories on War for the Twenty First Century
Intrigue, assassination, spies, and prostitutes make for captivating reading in Kautilya s
Arthishastra. One could easily dismiss this extensive composition as amusing literature from
ancient times, seemingly relevant today only in fiction or action adventure movies. Kautilya, an
ancient Indian military theorist and advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, is known as an extreme realist
who by comparison makes Machiavelli appear tame due to the brutality of his methods. Kautilya s
Arthashastra is a comprehensive compendium containing fifteen books providing kings and
ministers procedures for conquering, maintaining control of, and running states in the dangerous
and uncertain environment of ancient India. Of the fifteen books, three relate to war and national
security and contain several concepts relevant to modern times. Like Kautilia over two thousand
years ago, the United States (U.S.) military today faces a dangerous and uncertain global
environment and therefore must prepare for a wide array of contingencies. A brief review of three
books contained in the Arthashastra that relate to war and national security provide insight to key
issues that challenged Kautilya in his time and also challenge the U.S. military today; these issues
are not addressed by other military theorists and for this reason I believe that Kautilya s
Arthashastra best explains the nature and character of war in the 21st century.

Financial Analysis of the Healthcare Field
Introduction
In the ever changing dynamic of the healthcare industry, it is central to look at financial trends and
different types of financial analysis to capitalize on resources and minimize future impacts. With
any growing healthcare organization it is vital to be aware of one s internal and external
environment, the community it serves as well as the status of the economy. The purpose of this
paper is to determine the significance of certain types of financial analysis, particularly financial
ratios, the use of EBITDA and how they influence the healthcare field.
EBITDA, Financial Ratios and growing trends in healthcare EBITDA is an acronym which stands
for earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization and generally used to
determine how profitable a company can be (Brockman, C., Russell, J., 2012). The basic
understanding of the EBITDA is defined as the money the company has made without
considering expenses or taxes (Brockman, C., Russell, J., 2012). This can give a false sense of
how much the company is actually making or worth. In a hypothetical situation, a company creates
a product that costs the consumer $10, and 200 are made to meet the projected demand. With
EBITDA, it is assumed there is already a $2000 profit made even if the product is actually never
purchased. EBITDA does not calculate the manufacturing costs, taxes and employee salaries that go
into making a product. Although EBITDA does not seem to measure the actual value of a

So if the market isn t affected by which way you obtain the information, why is one way illegal and
the other legal when it is the exact same information?
For example, if I overheard a conversation by a CEO (or even if the CEO told me directly)
revealing a morsel of information pertaining to their business that had not become available to the
public yet, that would be an illegal piece of information to trade on. On the other hand, if I went to
that CEO s business every day and interviewed their customers or managers and my efforts turned
up the same information, that information would be absolutely legal to trade on because it was the
product of research even though it is the same exact information that was obtained by the CEO in
the first place.
Victimless Crime
There is no guarantee that there is always a victim of insider trading, more often than not, there is
actually no victim at all. When a person trades on the market, whether using legally obtained
information or illegally obtained information, they have no idea who is on the receiving end of
their trade. That person trading does not in any way have a direct impact on other people and
whether or not they are interested in buying or selling and that does not matter whether it is legally
obtained information or illegally obtained information or whether the trading party profits or loses.
The person who is initiating the trade is solely doing it

20th Century Immigration
The immigration and migration of people has contributed to the American Identity and changed
american history in three distinct periods. These periods included the pre civil war period, civil
war/industrialization era, and the 20th century. Each of these periods had a significant impact
on american history in both positive and troubling ways. Alot happened during the Pre civil war
that shapes america today. The colonial era started around 1495 and ended in 1763. The
indentured servants promised to work for a specific person for a long period of time in exchange
for passing to America. In 1804, Thomas Jefferson had a team to explore the Louisianna Purchase.
They travelled 8,000 miles over 3 years, They cleared the path for westward expansion. In 1848

How does JB Priestley Use the Inspector to Comment on Social Injustice An Inspector calls
Coursework
Introduction
The play an inspector calls is set in the year 1912, the same year that the great ship Titanic sunk.
The author of this play John Boynton Priestley has used this time to show how social classes
worked and how bad it actually was.
The play itself is set in a large house owned by a rich factory owner, Mr. Birling. Mr. Birling has a
wife and two children, Sheila and Eric. The family are having a small party because they are
celebrating the engagement of Sheila, Birlings daughter, to Gerald Croft. Gerald is the son of a

If you really think about it though you would see that it made the standards of Britain high and it s
position in the world greater than others.
How does J.B. Priestley use the inspector to comment on social injustice ?
The play An inspector calls has a great story in it. Yet if you take out the story the play comments
very strongly on social injustice in the early nineteen hundreds. There are many points of
snobbery in the play whilst the inspector is there and also when he isn t. For example the following
quote is a solid piece of evidence from the play of the social life.
Birling: ......I have an idea that your mother Lady Croft while she doesn t object to my girl feels
you might have done better for yourself socially.
The above quote most definitely shows the snobbish side of Mr. Birling and how he wants to be a
part of the Crofts and he will then be well known and maybe get onto the honors list.
The inspector is used in this play as really a base and also to bring out the upper class snobbery
of the family. He is shown as a poor, arrogant man and he doesn t care about the classing system.
This makes him very strong and he can then bring out his thoughts without any hesitation to the
family. The inspector is also for some reason a very good detective in a very unusual way. He
doesn t really ask many questions but literally persuades the family to come out with the

Vaginal yeast infections are very common with women. The symptoms include: soreness and
redness in the vaginal area, white, clumpy vaginal discharge that has a similar look to cottage
cheese, painful intercourse and extreme itching in the vaginal area. Yeast infection is possible in
men but with mostly uncircumcised men. The symptoms of men include itching or burning on
the tip of the penis and red rash on penis. Sexual partner can be infected by yeast infection if
untreated. Fortunately, there are many over the counter treatments for yeast infections available.
Creams are available as a treatment and also a physician may recommend a single, 150
milligram dose of Diflucan (fluconazole). It is very important to see a physician rather than self
diagnosing. If the infection returns it is possible that antifungal medicine is needed to be taken
everyday for 10 to 14 days and then once a week for 6 months. If a person frequently get yeast
infection a physician would further look into this matter to see what exactly is causing the
reoccurrence. A physician may suggest that you take a probiotic. Probiotic are known as healthy

Multi Sport Training Research Paper
When you approach your multisport training, the best way to answer your questions is to better
understand the principles behind the work you are putting in to improve. These are seven basic
principles of exercise or sport training you will want to keep in mind:
Individuality
Everyone is different and responds differently to training. Some people are able to handle higher
volumes of training while others may respond better to higher intensities. This is based on a
combination of factors like genetic ability, predominance of muscle fiber types, other factors in your
life, chronological or athletic age, and mental state.
Specificity
Improving your ability in a sport is very specific. If you want to be a great pitcher, running laps will

Your muscles will atrophy and the cellular adaptations like increased capillaries (blood flow to the
muscles) and mitochondria density will reverse. You can slow this rate of loss substantially by
conducting a maintenance/reduced program of training during periods where life gets in the way,
and is why just about all sports coaches ask their athletes to stay active in the offseason.
The principles of specificity, progression, overload, adaptation, and reversibility are why
practicing frequently and consistently are so important if you want to improve your
performance. Missed sessions cannot really be made up within the context of a single season.
They are lost opportunities for improvement. Skipping your long ride on weekend A means you
can t or shouldn t go as far as originally planned on weekend B (progression overload). Skipping
your Monday swim means your swimming skills and muscles won t be honed or stressed that day
(specificity). Missing a week due to a vacation sets you back more than one week (adaptation and
reversibility). Apply these principles to your training to get a better understanding of your body and
how to achieve

Government Of The People By Abraham Lincoln
INTRO
Democracy is eloquently described by Abraham Lincoln as government of the people, by the
people, for the people . The quote by Lincoln though, is perhaps the most straightforward,
compelling explanation ensuring that even the laymen understand the fundamentals of the term.
The subject matter that is required in this essay is to determine differences in the quality of
democracy. This is regarded as the dependant variable, which is the outcome that needs
explanation. This can be explained using the independent variables, the economic factors and
cultural factors which will be used to explain the phenomena of the dependant variable. 3
countries will be looked at in this essay to explain the given theories. The countries are Tunisia,
Algeria and Libya. All 3 countries have been picked having many similarities but when it comes
to the quality of democracy, they vary. All 3 countries are vastly Muslim, they border each other
and they are all situated in the north Africa. However the Polity score of each country differs
with Tunisia Algeria and Libya scoring 7, 2 and 0 respectively. Libya s polity score was taken that
of 2014. In measuring the difference in quality of democracy it needs to be ensured that the
countries are as similar as possible therefore enabling the difference in the quality of democracy
distinguishable.

A Long Way Gone Language Analysis
Approximately 300,000 child soldiers are actively serving in military forces, terrorist organizations,
and gangs. In 1993 and at the age of 13, Ishmael Beah was forced into the same horrendous
situation. Ishmael Beah s A Long Way Gone depicts his own journey of loss, military recruitment,
and rehabilitation. Ishmael Beah uses figurative language to support the theme that the capacity for
true evil is present in everyone if they are given apt incentive.
Ishmael Beah uses metaphors in A Long Way Gone to reinstate the overarching theme that
everyone has the capacity for true evil. This is shown in the story when Ishmael Beah tells the

was Do you have any last words to say? The old man at this point was unable to speak. His lips
trembled, but he couldn t get a word out. The rebel pulled the trigger, and like lightning, I saw
the spark of fire that came from the muzzle (Beah 33). This simile is used to improve the
sentence and show how the people are truly inhumane in their ways. However, previously in the
page, they were described as teenagers around the age of Ishmael, his brother, and their friends.
The Rebel United Front child soldiers were torturous to the old man before they killed him.
They were cold and showed no emotion, informing the reader that they had done this many,
many times before. This would never had happen previous to the war in Sierra Leone. This is
shown by the quote, Before the war a young man wouldn t have dared to talk to anyone older in
such a rude manner. We grew up in a culture that demanded good behaviour from everyone, and
especially from the young. Young people were required to respect their elders and everyone in
the community (Beah 33). This shows how previous to the war children were respectful to all
and because of the war, they are able to commit the worst crimes. Therefore, the young age of
these boys and their terrifying savagery shows how anyone is capable of evil. On other paths of
the village were the half burnt remains of those who had fought fiercely to free themselves, only
to die outside. They lay on the ground in different postures of pain, some reaching for their heads,
the white bones in their jaws visible, others curled up like a child in a womb, frozen (Beah 94 95).
This quote shows the atrocities that the young children are able to commit because of their horrible
circumstances. This is reinforced later

So far there are many international human resources management models known, the most used
are: the Perlmutter Model, The Adler Ghadar Model, the Taylor Model and the Geert Hofstede
Model.
a.The Perlmutter model
In this model, Perlmutter gives 4 modalities on which multinational companies can manage their
human resources activities on an international level. Those modalities are: ethnocentrism,
polycentrism, geo centrism, and region centrism. This Model shows how every multinational
company can develop and implement human resources strategies and policies at a level of daughter
companies in a host country. Besides the Perlmutter Model is a comparative management model
since it helps to identify the differences and resemblance, advantages and disadvantages between
the four (4) approaches a company can use to manage its human resources activities at an
international level.
b.The Adler Ghadar Model
For Adler N.J and Ghadar F., when multinational companies develop their activities at an
international level they have to concentrate their effort on many aspects of organizational
development. Therefore the authors have identified four stages of development of an organization.
The first stage happens at a national level, the second stage is at international level while the third
and fourth stages are at a Multinational level and global level respectively. The table below
describes well the process: Stage 1

What Is Military Coercion and What Factors Determine Its...
Military coercion strategy has long since existed as a means to enforce a desired set of outcomes,
behaviours, or policies. The definition of coercion covers a lot of theoretical ground, including both
compellence and deterrence. The successes and failures of military coercion can be seen through
the mechanisms of, Destruction, Punishment, and Denial that theorists have argued are part of the
methods of coercion. The effectiveness of militarycoercion may be linked to the credibility,
capability and communication of a threat. These factors that determine what military coercion is
are highlighted through historical examples, including the Cuban Missile Crises, nuclear warfare,
counterinsurgency and the Kosovoair campaign.

However, like destruction this process of punishment can be costly as well logistically troubling.
Lastly, denial seeks to change an enemy s will to resist this achieved by reducing their perceived
capability for resistance and reducing the enemy s perceived options to a choice between
surrendering now or later. This can be seen through the strategies of counterinsurgency, denial can
be seen as a way of manipulating the costs of expanding insurgent activity to new locations.
Russia currently uses the idea of denial when considering an approach of isolating centres of any
insurgent activity from areas of non violence, so as to avoid any reprisals of insurgency and
convince such groups of an inability to succeed. Needless to say, denial is inherently linked to
destruction as both mechanisms seek to make the objectives of any enemy unachievable in some
sense and essentially focus on attacking the military resources and infrastructure so as to coerce
them into taking an alternative approach or to stop all intentions.
Dr K Mueller further argues that coercion stems from the three Cs Credibility, Capability and
Communications . These few factors will assist in determining whether military coercion is
successful or has failed. According to Mueller a threat will only carry coercive weight to the
degree that the adversary believes the coercer will actually carry it out if compliance is not
forthcoming. Ultimately, the

Essay On Profession Of Arms
Human resource Sergeants responsibility for profession of arms is one of the most important
values we have. To better understand the importance of the profession of arms; I will explain the
meaning of profession of arms. The profession includes key factors which are expertise, trust,
development, values, and service. Each factor is what makes profession of arms attainable. One
way to excel at the profession of arms is to do what is best for the United States. We serve the
people of the United States and we are implementing services that we are trained and ready to
provide them. Some of which include protecting the United States and its allies from terrorists to
national disasters. We are there for them and we will support their decisions. The trust factor; not
only must we look out for the interest of the United States but earn their trust as well. Trust is not
easily given and we have to put in the effort to demonstrate that we are there for them.
Development factor involves training and education. Professionals are knowledgeable in their
career and focus on efficiency. We encourage our soldiers to advance in their MOS by going to
BLC, ALC and SLC. Army is also immense on civilian educations and receiving a college degree.
Profession of arms follows the values factor to establish unity and morals. Values... Show more

Agency Practice Approach And Critique Essay
Module 4: Agency Practice Approach and Critique
My field placement this year is with Careers in Transition (CIT) in the Lives in Transition (LIT)
program. LIT is a career orientated program aimed towards women who have experienced
domestic and/or family violence at some point in their lives which has, in most cases, resulted in
some form of oppression in their journey towards self sufficiency.
The primary objective of LIT is to help clients achieve gainful employment, and the program itself is
divided into 3 components. The first component is a counseling and information component that
gives an introduction to what domestic and family violence is, further delving into the feelings and
psychological effects that it has had on clients. In this component, clients get to explore and share
their own experiences and struggles in a safe environment alongside peers who can relate with a
qualified professional to facilitate this. The second component is a life skills and academic
component. During this stage of the program, clients are taught practical skills and how to apply
them in their everyday life, for example, math is introduced in the form of budgeting and balancing
monthly income with outflow of expenses. Parenting skills, prioritizing and time management
skills, nutrition and grocery shopping are some of the other things that are touched on, to name a
few. The third component is the job search for employment. This component is where the objective

The End of the World Essay
The End of the World
In writing definitively about American films of the nineteen fifties, Douglas Brode refers to the
societal hysteria resulting from fear of both the communist threat and the possibility of nuclear war.
Accompanying this general state of mind was the emergence of the science fiction film as a major
genre. Titles in the genre dealt with fantasy topics ranging from alien invasion (The Thing, 1951,
or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), to biologial missing links (The Creature from the Black
Lagoon, 1954), to the bizarre side effects of nuclear contamination (The Incredible Shrinking Man,
1957), or to actual nuclear war (The World, the Flesh and The Devil, 1959).
Another interesting example of this last category ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strada describes a spectrum of discourses ranging from the extreme right, constituted of the
governing elite and the politicians notion of the Pax Atomica, to the extreme left, occupied by the
type of panic about the bomb which resulted in some of the more grizzly works of science fiction
literature. The other specific positions he addresses are the sugar coated science fiction films (left
of centre), the avoidance seeking general public (centre), and the atomic scientists with their varied
acceptance of the H bomb as a necessary evil (right of centre). Regardless of one s position along
the spectrum, the possibility of nuclear war constituted a daily reality in the life of the average
American in the nineteen fifties. Government agencies issued specifications for the household
bomb shelter, school children experienced weekly drills teaching them the most effective positions
to brace themselves against the physical force of an atomic explosion, and true to form, the cinema
presented society with various reflections of face of the nuclear potential or the nuclear threat.
In most of the science fiction of the time, a primary concern related to the threat of the end of the
world is the belief that humanity, in its bizarre mix of madness and complacency, has created and
perfected the means of its own destruction. As a result, even in instances where the nuclear fiction

The Importance Of Hard Work In The Short Story Hollywood
The only important thing in life is hard work (Gilb 483). In the short, story Hollywood By
Dagoberto Gilb. Luis, and his wife Marta, and their son Ramon are Hispanic, but only Ramon
speaks English. There are conflicts between each other and others act on the beach. They see
things differently than other, particularly Luis saying what hard work is or not. They do not have
a lot of money, and they are lower class. However, Luis has exceptions, for Ramon on the
importance of hard work. Luis shows irony of unforeseen difference, lack of agreement, truth, and
expectation of hard work.
The sun s out. , It s still cold. As Luis and his wife Marta Mention (Gilb 482). The sand was
moist, the air cool, the ocean as gentle as a bay (Gilb 482). They have the whole beach to
themselves, because it was winter in Santa Monica beach. Which meant hotels would be
discounted; thus, not a lot of people around. Luis believed it was a good time, for Ramon to
knowledge the importance of hard work. In addition, Luis would relate things to Ramon so he
would understand what Luis was talking about, hard work. Those boats go around and catch fish
so people can eat (Gilb 483). Such as, I work at the plantation, which is how men make a living off
the land.
Throughout Hollywood Gilb expresses their emotions in not having money, nor being able to
speak English, besides their son Ramon who learned it from the babysitter. Luis is Bitter,
critical, outraged, scornful, and miserable. Luis controls everything the family ensures, and
Marta learned, long ago you could not argue with Luis. If they worked like us they wouldn t
have to run, Luis said of the joggers. At least they move to keep warm, Marta shot back
(Gilb482). Luis and Marta have been frustrated with each other since they have arrived at the
Santa Monica beach. Luis and his family are lower class, therefore, did not have the funds for a
new blanket, Disneyland, or buying hotdogs on the beach. She lay down on the old blanket she d
never convinced him to replace, draped sweater oversell, and looped her arm over her eyes. The

The Invention Of Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell was not an American born inventor. He was born in Edinburgh Scotland
March 3, 1947. His father was a formal speech teacher. This might account for his early interest
in speech and sound. As a boy he was so intrigued with sound he taught himself to play the piano.
When he was a teenager his mother began to lose her hearing, and this further perpetuated his
entrance and desire to explore sound. Bell was a very smart young man. At age 12 he invented a
machine to take the husks off grains of wheat. This became a very important invention at this time,
because processing wheat by hand was very time consuming. People began to notice that he was a
very innovative child. His friend s father who owned the grain mill appreciated his invention so
much that he gave him a small shop to work on his inventions. Alexander Graham Bellwas home
schooled by his mother early in his childhood. As a child he received only three years of formal
education. He was only a mediocre student, but showed an amazing ability for problem solving.
This was around 1859 about the time his mother started to lose her hearing. In 1863, Bell first heard
a machine designed by a German scientist, that imitated the sound of the human voice. He was very
intrigued with this machine, and it probably provided the seed that led to the invention of the
telephone. He and his brother obtain the book written by the scientists, translated it from German,
and learn how the machine worked.

What The Homestead Act Is Through Its Powerpoint Slideshow...
I found a great lesson to work off of for my lesson plan on history of the Homestead Act. The
original lesson was well organized but very short. I chose to focus on Domain 2 Conceptual
Understandings because this lesson plan only had one assessment and I felt that the assessment was
weak in whether a teacher could gage students understanding of the material. This lesson did a
below average job of explaining what the Homestead Actis through its powerpoint slideshow and
worksheet activities. I also didn t like how the lesson plan was designed to show a video clip of
the Western Expansion at the very end of the lecture. I feel that by showing this video is pointless
and students might lose interest by the end of the lesson.
Overall, I agree with the lesson objective but modified it to make it fit my lesson. I also thought
that the opening question was a good way to start a discussion of what the Homestead Act is and
why settlers moved west. I think this question really gets students thinking and is a great segway
to the powerpoint lecture. After the class discussion the lesson plan went right into the the
powerpoint lecture. I think this is a great next step but the powerpoint was very dry and boring.
There is no way a class of 4th graders could sit for 20 minutes listening to the provided
powerpoint. The worksheet packet is a great idea but it did not follow along with the powerpoint
and at points is confusing. I believe if a teacher is going to provide a worksheet packet

Norse Myths In Ragnarok
In the book Ragnarok, the thin girl goes through certain events such as the war and her father s
undecided fate, which leads her to escape into the Norse Myths. I think reading the story of
Asgard and the Gods is her antidote to eternal boredom. An antidote is a cure for poison. The
poison is the war and the worry about her father and the cure is the Norse Myths. In my opinion,
the thin child feared God more than she feared death The thin child, thinking of playground
cruelty and the Blitz, liked to glance at the idea that Gods were bad, that things were bad (Pg
123). The Gods she knew from the stories she read were bad and that was influencing her
beliefs. This story reminds be of the Bible story of Adam and Eve. Looking at the story from
another perspective, did the Garden of Eden become boring and as a result Adam and Eve ate the
apple. The apple resembles the Norse Myths because the apple is the antidote in the Garden of

A Conservative Revolution
A Conservative Revolution Whether the American Revolution should be viewed as a conservative
or radical movement is a hotly debated topic among historians, and each side provides a convincing
case. Historians who view the movement as radical praise the colonists effort to send the British
crown s rule and effective implementation of a democratic government to the extent the world had
never seen before. On the other hand, historians who view the American Revolution as a
conservative movement note that Americans inherited the freest democratic society in the world,

He maintains a strong argument that the Revolution was a democratic movement because even
though in terms of structure [of the government] there is little revolutionary to be found, the
alteration of the balance of power within the structure 7 was a radical change. He states that
previous representatives were appointed by the British government or under strict control of
political machines. However, while Jensen supports that it was radical that people could vote
representatives into power, he seems to overlook the fact that pre Revolutionary colonists could
vote representatives into the lower houses, thus making the post Revolution an extension of this
preexisting condition. His argument is further weakened as he gives little mention to the
disenfranchised groups of people, stating that there were other areas where change took place, such
as in women s right to vote, but they were just beginnings. 8 While small, isolated efforts were
made for disenfranchised groups, no group received nearly as much utility from the Revolution as
white males, and many of these groups would have to continue to fight for their rights long into the
20th century, thus proving that the American Revolution did not provide one sharp, violent change
for the population, but rather the conservative roots for efforts that would take much longer.

quick to become anomalous is likely due to the initial detection of viral ssRNA by RIG I
(Pichlmair, et al., 2006). In fig. 5, we show further evidence of the pathway cascade, i.e., the
fraction of the subjects that have k pathways out of 403 that are in alarm at a given time averaged
over all symptomatic subjects. This graph suggests that the pathway cascade could permit a
potentially very early diagnosis of influenza. For example, these results suggest that at least 25% of
patients that become symptomatic could be identified in the first 16 hours of infection using a five
alarm pathway. Discussion of pathway results The most likely pathway to go into alarm first in our
experiment, based on the MSET results, was the cytosolic DNA sensing pathway. It was the first
pathway to alarm in the cascade over 70% of the time. Influenza A does not generate dsDNA, but
negative sense ssRNA (Pichlmair, et al., 2006). The cytosolic DNA sensing pathway is known to
detect foreign dsDNA in the cell and upon detection of this exogenous DNA, production and

dragon slayer lacrima was not common knowledge, so he d heard about the apparent snake
charmer, or whatever the people believed, and shrugged it off.
However, when Natsu and his team returned after taking down one of the corners of the infamous
Balam Alliance, he became slightly more interested. Without actually acknowledging them, he
listened to their tales that included a man who had nearly killed Erza, (would have, if Wendy had
not been there), and battled Natsu with an impressive combination of soul ... Show more content on

The thrill that flooded his veins at the defeat of Jura was addicting. He was strong. Of course, he
d known he was strong anyway, but defeating one of the ten wizard saints was important. He felt
like he d finally proven something to his father; the lightning dragon slayer lacrima had been put in
him because he hadn t been powerful enough. Now, he had not only single handedly defeated his
father and his guild, but he also beat a wizard saint.
But then the dragons happened, and suddenly he was one of the only people with the ability to
actually do anything. To kill a dragon was the reason for his power, the purpose of his magic, and
he was determined to do so. Last time he saw a dragon, Acnologia itself, even the power of four
dragon slayers was not enough, but now he was stronger, and he would protect everyone.
When he heard that Cobra, the poison dragon slayer, was also fighting, he briefly wondered
whether he also wanted to prove himself. Because despite the attitude, and the fights, and the
anger, they weren t the real deal. They were experiments, artificially made, and what right did they
have to call themselves dragon slayers if they couldn t even slay a

Winter Year Research Paper
The winter months can become very hard on your home. Problems always arise during the
winter months, and always seem more expensive. Start at the first sign of winter, so you will
have fewer repairs to make yourself through them cold winter months. Doing this yourself can
save you a lot of money in the long run. Tip #1 Clean Gutters / Fix Cracks You should make sure
all debris are cleaned from your gutters right before winterstarts and then once in the middle of
winter. I have found the easiest way to clean these if with a small set of garden tools. Use the
shovel to scrape the leaves out of there. Then use the small rake they give you to help. Once you
have removed it all, take a garden hose and spray it off, making sure the water drains correctly. If

He kept telling me no, I was basically crazy. A few days later, I went out back, and it was like a
homemade ice ring. We have a craw space, or else our house would have been partly flooded.
They also sell thick plastic covers to cover your faucet. We have one, and will be doing all this at
the end of summer. You don t even want to know what our water bill was like for them few days
of running water non stop. Tip #5 Caulk Siding You should have a caulk gun ready with general
winter caulk and start walking around your home. Place caulk around your dryer vent and any
other vents you have on the outside of your home. Caulk around any pipes or wires sticking out
of your house. This way you can prevent any air from seeping in. This will save money on your
bills throughout the winter months. Tip #6 Furnaces Turn your furnace on and make sure
everything is working correctly. If not, get it fixed as soon as possible. If it s working fine, then
turn it back off and take the front panel off it. Take out your filter, and vacuum out the inside of the
furnace. I use the smallest attachment on my vacuum, so I don t hit any wires on accident. If you
have coil in there, use a soft brush. You do not want to bend these

The Effect of Black Power on the Emergence of Yellow Power
The Sixties In America (AMST 1200) Professor Osman November 18, 2013 The Effect of Black
Power on the Emergence of Yellow Power African Americans were not alone in the shift to
ethnic power. Other minority groups also shifted from the fight for integration and began to
adopt the rhetoric of ethnic power and pride in the late 1960 s. By the late 1960 s, a host of
other groups began to adopt the rhetoric of power : Red Power, Grey Power, Pink Power, Brown
Power, etc. What were the similarities and differences between the rhetoric of Chicano Power,
Yellow Power and Black Power? The 1960s in America brought a host of movements that pushed
for equality, power, and change. Each movement helped to shape and effect the other... Show more

Although Asian Americans did not face as much racism as the African Americans in the late
1960s, they still felt that they needed to break out of the restraints placed on them by the white
community, as the Black Power Movement pushed had for in the late 1960s. African Americans
of the Black Power Movement felt that their lives were being determined and manipulated by the
whites who had control over American society. In the first declaration of The Black Panther
Platform, they explain, We want freedom. We want power to determine the destiny of our Black
Community. We believe that black people will not be free until we are able to determine our
destiny. (Bloom and Breines, 146). The members of this movement believed that whites always had
power over them because African Americans were never allowed the opportunities to show their
full potential without the interference of the white community. In an SNCC essay, entitled The
Basis of Black Power, Stokely Carmichael proclaims that, Negroes in this country have never been
allowed to organize themselves because of white interference. As a result of this, the stereotype has
been reinforced that blacks cannot organize themselves. (Bloom and Breines, 120). The Black
Power Movement believed that the only way to break free of these ties and these stereotypes was to
isolate themselves from the whites, including the whites involved in

  • 2. Raskolnikov Motives The Renewal of Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov, in Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment, is a complex character difficult to understand. He believes himself superior to the rest of humanity, and therefore he believes he has the right to commit murder. After he kills Alena Ivanovna, an old pawnbroker, Raskolnikov discovers his supposed superiority has cut him off from other people. He exists in a self created alienation from the world around him. Raskolnikov mearly drifts through life, unable to participate in it anymore. It is only through Sonya that Raskolnikov is able to gradually regain his connection to humanity; she helps him to understand that, although he cannot be superior to others, she loves him ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He tells himself that his actions are not the same as those of the peasants, who acted only out of malicious cruelty. His motives are quite different. Raskolnikov believes that he can use Alena Ivanovna s money to help his mother and sister, who are extremely poor. Thus, he initially convinces himself that he is willing to perform this act of violence in order to benefit his family. This motivation is secondary to a darker one. Raskolnikov believes in Hegel s idea of the World historical individual, one who commits extraordinary deeds which may be forbidden to the rest of society but are permitted to an elite few. Hegel believed that the actions of these world historical individuals had such a profound influence upon their societies that the criminal or violent nature of their deeds was justified by the larger good they accomplished. Thus, Napoleon s military victories cost thousands of men their lives, yet he was justified in disregarding these losses as the inevitable costs of his rise to power, which he used to improve French society as a whole, instituting sweeping reforms in religion, education , the judicial system, and other areas. Raskolnikov explains to Porfiry later that those with new ideas to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What are the common objections to the traditional understanding of Christology, and how do you respond to them? Some objections were it being a philosophical idea than it being historical revelation. Another was that there is no divine production of the world or there being three different people but as a union. There s another one saying that Jesus didn t fully become man and didn t have the true things of man. How I would respond to this is by starting off with saying yes it is true that He didn t fully become man, but He still have all things that man have reason is because He would not be able to come to save our souls and prolong our lives as well as being kept from condemnation to the point where you won t have no chance to tell God who you are. We would have been sent straight to hell without no anymore chances at all. But for Apollinaris saying He didn t have any man like qualities or attributes that will show that He has came to us as a man. In what ways is Christ in his humanity an example to you? I have been fortunate enough to see the impact United has provided from community donations and its funded agencies in El Paso. Hegel developed the Systems Theory in the 18th century and the best way to describe the organizations audience is in comparison to the organizations structure and function. University of Twente (2016) believes communication occurs among interdependent units that work together to adapt to an ever changing environment. United Way of El Paso County strives address issues in areas of education, homelessness, and economical stability. The organizations objective is to target multiple audiences and the programs structure is important to separate the different groups they support. • 5. What Is The Verbiage Of The Magna Carta The original Magna Carta signed by King John under the pressure of the English barons on June 15, 1215, marked an immeasurable change in the law in regards to the power of the sovereign in England. While that first draft was only in use for a short time, the subsequent drafts and additions by medieval and early modern kings and queens influenced law in continental Europe and the Americas. The ideas outlined in the original charter contain not only medieval material but ideas, perhaps not explicitly named, that are still prevalent and fundamental rights that Americans and citizens of the United Kingdom continue to relish today. Ideas such as due process, trial by a jury of peers, and even the origins of habeas corpusare found within the 61 clauses of this 800 year old document. Clauses 39 and 40 represent those three fundamental, essential rights that cannot and should not be deprived. The Magna Cartaand its articulation of due process before the law, trial by a jury of peers, and habeas corpus were meant as a means of infringing on the power of the tyrannical sovereign and it sparked the fight for personal liberties in England and the American Colonies and in doing so has become a staple of Common Law. Studying the verbiage of the Magna Carta is important, but the background and reasons for its creation dictate how its original meaning can be interpreted by a modern scholar. The Battle of Bouvines and the loss of England s landholdings in France was a catalyst for the creation of the Magna Carta, but Henry II and King John had made decisions that had royally angered the barons long before 1214. Throughout John s reign, the barons felt an increase in feudal obligations: they were forced to provide more soldiers, take more subtenants, marry into undesirable alliances, and their feudal courts power was being usurped by the royal courts and chancery. King John had been excommunicated for not agreeing with Pope Innocent III s candidate for Archbishop of Canterbury, and in doing so excommunicated the subjects of England. Combine all of those issues with losing the duchies held by the Angevin Kings, and quite reasonably, there would be anger. In a society where land is the cornerstone to profit and ... Essay about Emory Healthcare s New System to Reduce Errors During the 1980 s and 90 s there were many studies done that showed that medical errors were occurring in inpatient and outpatient settings at a very high rate. Computer Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems were designed to reduce or eliminate mistakes made by using hand written orders. The CPOE system allows users to directly enter their orders into the system on computers which are then sent directly to the healthcare providers that will be implementing the orders. Previously orders were placed by writing on order sheets on patient charts. This was sometimes done by the doctoror by a nurse acting on behalf of the doctor. Classes were held to train employees with the system and Emory used Application Content Experts, healthcare workers that had received special training in the CPOE system, as assistants to those needing help, and a special hotline was set up to help with any questions. In my opinion it was a good decision for Emory to implement the CPOE system as it will limit the number of errors occurring and in the end save costs and lives. It was also a good decision to roll out system out in one of their smaller units as an initial trial run. They were able to work out some of the bugs in the system by doing so. They also did a good job with their training and the ACE assistants and implementing the hot line. Although all of those steps were positive, they should have offered additional training and they should make extra training available for those that request it. In order for Emory to have a smooth roll out when they introduce the CPOE system at EUHM they will need to more clearly define the roles of the users of the system in order to reduce redundancies in the orders and clarifying the responsibilities of the ... The Princess Bride Film Analysis It is remarkably difficult to narrow down a favorite movie because I have a few, however the one film that I have already watched numerous times and still plan on watching many more would have to be The Princess Bride. It is a story based on the book by S. Morgenstern s classic tale of true love and high adventure abridged with the good parts version by William Goldman who later translated it to screenplay. The book was actually written as a nonexistent political satire, however this story is also infused with excerpts from Goldman s fictional life. The filmpreserves this unique structure to tell a story within a story by using the actors Peter Faulk and Fred Savage as grandfather and sick grandson, respectively. The Princess Bride uses a variety of techniques from acting technique, cinematography, narrativestructure, the potential for societal impact, style, genre, and sound to reveal a satire of the common fairy tale, while simultaneously becoming one of the most cherished movies for over thirty years. Kautilya s Theories On War Essay Kautilya s Theories on War for the Twenty First Century Intrigue, assassination, spies, and prostitutes make for captivating reading in Kautilya s Arthishastra. One could easily dismiss this extensive composition as amusing literature from ancient times, seemingly relevant today only in fiction or action adventure movies. Kautilya, an ancient Indian military theorist and advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, is known as an extreme realist who by comparison makes Machiavelli appear tame due to the brutality of his methods. Kautilya s Arthashastra is a comprehensive compendium containing fifteen books providing kings and ministers procedures for conquering, maintaining control of, and running states in the dangerous and uncertain environment of ancient India. Of the fifteen books, three relate to war and national security and contain several concepts relevant to modern times. Like Kautilia over two thousand years ago, the United States (U.S.) military today faces a dangerous and uncertain global environment and therefore must prepare for a wide array of contingencies. A brief review of three books contained in the Arthashastra that relate to war and national security provide insight to key issues that challenged Kautilya in his time and also challenge the U.S. military today; these issues are not addressed by other military theorists and for this reason I believe that Kautilya s Arthashastra best explains the nature and character of war in the 21st century. With any growing healthcare organization it is vital to be aware of one s internal and external environment, the community it serves as well as the status of the economy. The purpose of this paper is to determine the significance of certain types of financial analysis, particularly financial ratios, the use of EBITDA and how they influence the healthcare field. EBITDA, Financial Ratios and growing trends in healthcare EBITDA is an acronym which stands for earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization and generally used to determine how profitable a company can be (Brockman, C., Russell, J., 2012). The basic understanding of the EBITDA is defined as the money the company has made without considering expenses or taxes (Brockman, C., Russell, J., 2012). This can give a false sense of how much the company is actually making or worth. In a hypothetical situation, a company creates a product that costs the consumer $10, and 200 are made to meet the projected demand. With EBITDA, it is assumed there is already a $2000 profit made even if the product is actually never purchased. EBITDA does not calculate the manufacturing costs, taxes and employee salaries that go into making a product. Although EBITDA does not seem to measure the actual value of a ... For example, if I overheard a conversation by a CEO (or even if the CEO told me directly) revealing a morsel of information pertaining to their business that had not become available to the public yet, that would be an illegal piece of information to trade on. On the other hand, if I went to that CEO s business every day and interviewed their customers or managers and my efforts turned up the same information, that information would be absolutely legal to trade on because it was the product of research even though it is the same exact information that was obtained by the CEO in the first place. Victimless Crime There is no guarantee that there is always a victim of insider trading, more often than not, there is actually no victim at all. Yet if you take out the story the play comments very strongly on social injustice in the early nineteen hundreds. There are many points of snobbery in the play whilst the inspector is there and also when he isn t. For example the following quote is a solid piece of evidence from the play of the social life. Birling: ......I have an idea that your mother Lady Croft while she doesn t object to my girl feels you might have done better for yourself socially. The above quote most definitely shows the snobbish side of Mr. Birling and how he wants to be a part of the Crofts and he will then be well known and maybe get onto the honors list. The inspector is used in this play as really a base and also to bring out the upper class snobbery of the family. He is shown as a poor, arrogant man and he doesn t care about the classing system. This makes him very strong and he can then bring out his thoughts without any hesitation to the family. The inspector is also for some reason a very good detective in a very unusual way. Lastly, denial seeks to change an enemy s will to resist this achieved by reducing their perceived capability for resistance and reducing the enemy s perceived options to a choice between surrendering now or later. This can be seen through the strategies of counterinsurgency, denial can be seen as a way of manipulating the costs of expanding insurgent activity to new locations. Russia currently uses the idea of denial when considering an approach of isolating centres of any insurgent activity from areas of non violence, so as to avoid any reprisals of insurgency and convince such groups of an inability to succeed. Needless to say, denial is inherently linked to destruction as both mechanisms seek to make the objectives of any enemy unachievable in some sense and essentially focus on attacking the military resources and infrastructure so as to coerce them into taking an alternative approach or to stop all intentions. Dr K Mueller further argues that coercion stems from the three Cs Credibility, Capability and Communications . • 25. Agency Practice Approach And Critique Essay Module 4: Agency Practice Approach and Critique My field placement this year is with Careers in Transition (CIT) in the Lives in Transition (LIT) program. LIT is a career orientated program aimed towards women who have experienced domestic and/or family violence at some point in their lives which has, in most cases, resulted in some form of oppression in their journey towards self sufficiency. The primary objective of LIT is to help clients achieve gainful employment, and the program itself is divided into 3 components. The first component is a counseling and information component that gives an introduction to what domestic and family violence is, further delving into the feelings and psychological effects that it has had on clients. In this component, clients get to explore and share their own experiences and struggles in a safe environment alongside peers who can relate with a qualified professional to facilitate this. The second component is a life skills and academic component. During this stage of the program, clients are taught practical skills and how to apply them in their everyday life, for example, math is introduced in the form of budgeting and balancing monthly income with outflow of expenses. Parenting skills, prioritizing and time management skills, nutrition and grocery shopping are some of the other things that are touched on, to name a few. • 26. The End of the World Essay The End of the World In writing definitively about American films of the nineteen fifties, Douglas Brode refers to the societal hysteria resulting from fear of both the communist threat and the possibility of nuclear war. Accompanying this general state of mind was the emergence of the science fiction film as a major genre. Titles in the genre dealt with fantasy topics ranging from alien invasion (The Thing, 1951, or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), to biologial missing links (The Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954), to the bizarre side effects of nuclear contamination (The Incredible Shrinking Man, 1957), or to actual nuclear war (The World, the Flesh and The Devil, 1959). Strada describes a spectrum of discourses ranging from the extreme right, constituted of the governing elite and the politicians notion of the Pax Atomica, to the extreme left, occupied by the type of panic about the bomb which resulted in some of the more grizzly works of science fiction literature. The other specific positions he addresses are the sugar coated science fiction films (left of centre), the avoidance seeking general public (centre), and the atomic scientists with their varied acceptance of the H bomb as a necessary evil (right of centre). Regardless of one s position along the spectrum, the possibility of nuclear war constituted a daily reality in the life of the average American in the nineteen fifties. Government agencies issued specifications for the household bomb shelter, school children experienced weekly drills teaching them the most effective positions to brace themselves against the physical force of an atomic explosion, and true to form, the cinema presented society with various reflections of face of the nuclear potential or the nuclear threat. In most of the science fiction of the time, a primary concern related to the threat of the end of the world is the belief that humanity, in its bizarre mix of madness and complacency, has created and perfected the means of its own destruction. • 30. The Invention Of Alexander Graham Bell Alexander Graham Bell was not an American born inventor. He was born in Edinburgh Scotland March 3, 1947. His father was a formal speech teacher. This might account for his early interest in speech and sound. As a boy he was so intrigued with sound he taught himself to play the piano. When he was a teenager his mother began to lose her hearing, and this further perpetuated his entrance and desire to explore sound. Bell was a very smart young man. At age 12 he invented a machine to take the husks off grains of wheat. This became a very important invention at this time, because processing wheat by hand was very time consuming. People began to notice that he was a very innovative child. His friend s father who owned the grain mill appreciated his invention so much that he gave him a small shop to work on his inventions. Alexander Graham Bellwas home schooled by his mother early in his childhood. As a child he received only three years of formal education. He was only a mediocre student, but showed an amazing ability for problem solving. This was around 1859 about the time his mother started to lose her hearing. In 1863, Bell first heard a machine designed by a German scientist, that imitated the sound of the human voice. He was very intrigued with this machine, and it probably provided the seed that led to the invention of the telephone. He and his brother obtain the book written by the scientists, translated it from German, and learn how the machine worked. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The original lesson was well organized but very short. I chose to focus on Domain 2 Conceptual Understandings because this lesson plan only had one assessment and I felt that the assessment was weak in whether a teacher could gage students understanding of the material. This lesson did a below average job of explaining what the Homestead Actis through its powerpoint slideshow and worksheet activities. I also didn t like how the lesson plan was designed to show a video clip of the Western Expansion at the very end of the lecture. I feel that by showing this video is pointless and students might lose interest by the end of the lesson. Overall, I agree with the lesson objective but modified it to make it fit my lesson. I also thought that the opening question was a good way to start a discussion of what the Homestead Act is and why settlers moved west. I think this question really gets students thinking and is a great segway to the powerpoint lecture. After the class discussion the lesson plan went right into the the powerpoint lecture. I think this is a great next step but the powerpoint was very dry and boring. There is no way a class of 4th graders could sit for 20 minutes listening to the provided powerpoint. I think reading the story of Asgard and the Gods is her antidote to eternal boredom. An antidote is a cure for poison. The poison is the war and the worry about her father and the cure is the Norse Myths. In my opinion, the thin child feared God more than she feared death The thin child, thinking of playground cruelty and the Blitz, liked to glance at the idea that Gods were bad, that things were bad (Pg 123). The Gods she knew from the stories she read were bad and that was influencing her beliefs. This story reminds be of the Bible story of Adam and Eve. Looking at the story from another perspective, did the Garden of Eden become boring and as a result Adam and Eve ate the apple. Historians who view the movement as radical praise the colonists effort to send the British crown s rule and effective implementation of a democratic government to the extent the world had never seen before. On the other hand, historians who view the American Revolution as a conservative movement note that Americans inherited the freest democratic society in the world, and see the movement as an inevitable breakaway from the British crown. He maintains a strong argument that the Revolution was a democratic movement because even though in terms of structure [of the government] there is little revolutionary to be found, the alteration of the balance of power within the structure 7 was a radical change. He states that previous representatives were appointed by the British government or under strict control of political machines. However, while Jensen supports that it was radical that people could vote representatives into power, he seems to overlook the fact that pre Revolutionary colonists could vote representatives into the lower houses, thus making the post Revolution an extension of this preexisting condition. His argument is further weakened as he gives little mention to the disenfranchised groups of people, stating that there were other areas where change took place, such as in women s right to vote, but they were just beginnings. 8 While small, isolated efforts were made for disenfranchised groups, no group received nearly as much utility from the Revolution as white males, and many of these groups would have to continue to fight for their rights long into the 20th century, thus proving that the American Revolution did not provide one sharp, violent change for the population, but rather the conservative roots for efforts that would take much longer. The later activation of the IL 10 pathway in the symptomatic subjects can be explained by the anti inflammatory nature of IL 10 and.... Similarly, the fact that the DNA sensing pathway is quick to become anomalous is likely due to the initial detection of viral ssRNA by RIG I (Pichlmair, et al., 2006). In fig. 5, we show further evidence of the pathway cascade, i.e., the fraction of the subjects that have k pathways out of 403 that are in alarm at a given time averaged over all symptomatic subjects. This graph suggests that the pathway cascade could permit a potentially very early diagnosis of influenza. For example, these results suggest that at least 25% of patients that become symptomatic could be identified in the first 16 hours of infection using a five alarm pathway. Discussion of pathway results The most likely pathway to go into alarm first in our experiment, based on the MSET results, was the cytosolic DNA sensing pathway. It was the first pathway to alarm in the cascade over 70% of the time. Influenza A does not generate dsDNA, but negative sense ssRNA (Pichlmair, et al., 2006). The cytosolic DNA sensing pathway is known to detect foreign dsDNA in the cell and upon detection of this exogenous DNA, production and maturation of cytokines and interferons initiates an immune response (http://www.genome.jp/dbget bin/www_bget?pathway+hsa04623). African Americans of the Black Power Movement felt that their lives were being determined and manipulated by the whites who had control over American society.
