How big is your problem? - Estimating in complex world
1. How big is your problem?
Estimating in a complex world
Justyna Wykowska & Tomasz Wykowski
Regional Scrum Gathering Beijing 2019
2. After this session you will be able to:
Explain how to speed up your estimating.
Create agreements improving accuracy of estimates.
Use 5 different ways of estimating.
Estimating Workshop
3. Why are we estimating?
Answering the questions:
How long it takes?
How much does it cost?
What can I get by this date?
Is it worth doing?
Is it doable?
4. Exercise 1:
What’s the weight of animals?
Evaluate how heavy is each of those animals (do not check on internet).
home cat
giant panda
male elephant
largest known whale
Chinese dragon
Type of estimates: Crowd wisdom
5. Lesson 1
Don’t estimate if you don’t have to, use statistic data
Bigger unknown means bigger variance.
Discussing small difference with large numbers is a waste of time.
Use proper scale (i e. exponential, Fibonacci, T-shirt size).
6. Exercise 2:
What’s the size of animals?
Evaluate how high each of those animals is:
elephant
giraffe
snake
dog
mouse
monkey
crocodile
butterfly
TEAM A:
Type of estimates: affinity estimation
Sort as a team - smallest on the left the biggest
on the right.
TEAM B:
Type of estimates: team agreement
Provide a size of animal in cm.
Raise a hand when you reach consensus and mark down your time.
8. Exercise 3:
How difficult is to bring animal to Beijing?
Sort items from easiest to most difficult. No talking is allowed.
When done, write down what factors have you taken under consideration
during assessment.
Type of estimates: Silent sort
elephant
horse
snake
dog
mouse
monkey
crocodile
butterfly
9. Lesson 3
Estimates have more than one dimension.
Dimensions are living list and should change over time.
10. Exercise 4:
How difficult is to teach animal a trick?
Select one story as reference point.
Product Owner presents the work item to be estimated -
Briefly discuss the scope of work and answer business
questions.
Every estimator selects a single poker card privately. All
cards are shown at once.
If everybody played the same card, the value becomes
the estimate of the work item.
If estimates differ, owners of the lowest and highest
estimates presents their points of view, but do not defend
their estimates.
elephant
snake
dog
mouse
monkey
crocodile
Type of estimates: Planning poker
11. Lesson 4
Talk to your Product Owner, users and stakeholders.
Define your point of reference.
12. Thank you!
