As part of the IKEA team exploring the creation of AR gaming experience for children in-store, Shilpi started her journey through uncharted territory when she was presented with new challenges around every corner. Shilpi encountered many learnings and insights along the way, but one thing that stuck with her is that the most complex of products often requires the most basic type of research to achieve data.

Understanding human motivation_in_the_age_of_connected_machines
Solving large-scale, Industrial Internet problems has the potential of creating huge cost savings, new products, and market opportunities. However, beyond the technical challenges, understanding human motivations and values underpinned by the Internet of Things is difficult.
As data collection and connectivity grow exponentially, the interface to remote storage, analytics and connected systems become an inflection point through which potential value is delivered to end users and equipment operators thus, increasing the importance and value of how we interact with connected hardware.
Examples are shown of how the Industrial Internet of Things can unlock value propositions such as increased productivity, better analysis, and business intelligence by better understanding human motivation.

From systematic studies over the decades, the smart home’s main functionalities have evolved from home automation to remote monitoring and controlling, then to context awareness. All the smart home products have a mainstream type in a certain period. However, have these mainstream functionalities covered all the needs of the users?
Through 3 rounds of research conducted across 3 different markets (China, EU, and Bay Area in the US) during a two-year span, Veronika and her colleagues at frog have found some new surprising uses and work-arounds that users invented, which have definitely inspired them in surfacing the hidden and essential needs in smart homes.

In this talk, through some research finding anecdotes, Veronika will lay out 3 key lenses that were used to uncover the hidden needs and JBTDs in the smart home space, and talk about how to transfer these hidden needs into some new smart home product and service design opportunities.

This talk outlines the basic components of an ethnographic perspective, explores a case study from a recent engagement between projekt202 and an enterprise software company, and highlights how the impact of this research ripples through the software development process.
