HMT was established in 1953 as a machine tool manufacturing company but later diversified into various products including watches. It started watch manufacturing in 1962 in collaboration with Citizen Watch Company of Japan. However, HMT struggled as the demand for mechanical watches declined with the rise of quartz watches. It failed to embrace the new quartz technology fully and did not focus enough on design, aesthetics, and marketing. As a result, it lost market share to competitors and was unable to adapt to changes in consumer preferences.
