2. 1930
Science Fiction in the 1930s was impacted the Great Depression, the Great Depression
started after the stock market crash in October 1929, this sent Wall Street down hill and
wiped out many investors. They began to create escapist films for the audience and the
rise of the serial films was born. These were low budget films, each week a new episode
was made and it always ended on a cliffhanger. So the audience has to come back each
week to see it.
Due to World war 2 influential patriotic superheroes were developed for
example, Fleischer studios animated Superman. This was used for
propaganda during the time. But science fiction decreased in popularity in
the war.
3. 1940:
In the 1940s was the Golden Age, this was the era
were science fiction gained a lot of attention The
Golden age follows the Pulp Era. In the 1940
Science Fiction Horror films were being made this
happened after the WW2.
4. 1950:
In the 1950s the atomic bomb had a great impact on science, also another great impact
was the Cold War. The Cold War was a problem between political and military tension.
It was between the eastern bloc and the western bloc. In addition alien film became
popular in the 1950. A lot of the media was broadcasting news about UFO's this is how
alien films started.
5. 1960:
In the 1960's there weren't as many view, instead it became
more popular with children because there were television
for kids based on Sci-Fi. Planet of the Apes became popular
with the audience in the second decade, this had four
sequals and it own television shows. This brought the adult
views back up.
6. 1970:
When people started visiting the moon this became an interest in
science fiction. By finding out new space discoveries thi created
more interest about the universe, this was then reflected into
films. A new type of Sci-Fi film came out which was conspiracy
thriller, also science fiction comedy also came about.

8. 1990:
The creation of the world wide web and the cyberpunk genre
became popular in internet themed films. Cyberpunk is normally set
in the future, it mainly focus on advanced technology. The films are
conflict based and set in the future earth rather than galaxies.
Characters in Cyberpunk lived alone and on the edge of society in
dystopian futures. There daily life was impacted by the change in
technology. Also later on in the decade computers became more
advanced and that enhanced the special effects used in films. By the
improvement of computers this allowed Star Wars to be re-made
and released in 1997. Each year in 1990s one or more major Sci-Fi

9. 2000:
In the 2000s Sci-Fi films turned away from space travel and fantasy based films. Except for
Star Wars and Star Trek they were the only films set in space that appeared in the first half of
the 2000 decade. However Superheroes came about and that was popular with the
audience. By the middle of the decade people stopped going into cinemas and watching Sci-
Fi films. So they started film advertisement to get people interested into Sci-Fi films again.
Also because there weren't many cinemas reviews they made up their losses by making high
quality.
