History Of Genre
1. History of Genre (Horror)
The genre of horror has the aim of putting a
negative effect on the audience’s emotions.
Horror films can be scary in many different
ways, this can be by making a sudden
movement with aloud noise that is
unexpected or a buildup of suspense that
makes you cautious in everyday life. The
horror genre has been around since the late
1800’s and is still an epidemic in the film
industry.
History dates back the early 1900’s during
the period of talking pictures; the U.S
company Universal pictures started Todd
Browning’s Dracula in 1931 and The Old
Dark House. The films were made with the
aim to thrill and also include more serious
elements, the famous horror Frankenstein
was the original in a series that continued
for many years. A number of these films
mixed gothic horror with science fiction;
one of these films was the 1933 premier
The Invisible Man that included a mad
scientist.
2. As technology improved, so did the horror
genre, new styles emerged onto the screens
of cinemas for nations to shiver upon. Low
budget productions of outside threats such
as aliens started to come into play. These
films included plants, animals and people
being mutated into unusual creatures. Japan
featured effects of nuclear radiation leaking
out, creating a monster; this was the famous
premier Godzilla. Great Britain arose as a
maker of horror films in the late 50’s. The
company Hammer had huge international
success after making a classic horror film
thatwas shown in colour for the first time.
British companies added to a boom in UK
Horror film production. Producers
continued to bring together factors of
science fiction and horror decades after.
Peeping Tom, The first Slasher film directed
by Michael Powell, was a film that was
based on a photographer who was a part
time murderer. This put a chill down the
spines of the public, making a revelation.
Next to come was Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho
in 1960 with the other hit horror The Birds
in 1963. Ghosts and monsters still stuck on
the screen of cinemas, yet a lot of films used
3. supernatural premise. By the 21 century
horror had escalated hugely, the year 2000
saw the release of The Exorcist which filled
millions of seats in cinemas around the
world despite being brought out on video
for years. Final destination started there
sequels in the year 2000 being a smash hit
with the world of horror. The next decade
saw the release of many hit horrors such as
I Am Legend which brought in a huge
worldwide lifetime gross of $585, 3459,010
with it being shown on 3,648 cinemas. The
horror genre has changed the way we
watch films forever. It has opened new
doors that have enabled producers to do
what would have been impossible without
the creation of horror. Horror is always
expanding and always will. It has endless
possibilities for the cinema world and
always seems to finds new ways to keep
viewers awake at night.
