Higher Education Essay
Crafting an essay on the topic of higher education can be both challenging and intricate. The
complexity arises from the vast scope of the subject, encompassing various aspects such as its
importance, challenges, benefits, and evolving trends. To navigate through this expansive
landscape, one must delve into extensive research to gather relevant information, statistics, and
scholarly perspectives.
Furthermore, articulating coherent and persuasive arguments requires a comprehensive
understanding of the current educational landscape and its nuances. Balancing the need for
depth and breadth of coverage poses a unique challenge, as the essay should not only address
overarching themes but also delve into specific details to provide a well-rounded perspective.
In addition, staying updated with the latest developments in higher education, such as
technological advancements, policy changes, and societal shifts, is crucial. This dynamic nature
of the subject demands continuous vigilance to ensure the essay's relevance and accuracy.
Moreover, expressing one's thoughts eloquently and maintaining a cohesive flow throughout the
essay is another hurdle. Striking the right balance between being informative and engaging can
be demanding, as it requires a keen sense of audience awareness and effective communication
skills.
Despite the difficulties, writing an essay on higher education is a rewarding endeavor. It allows
the writer to contribute to an ongoing discourse and encourages critical thinking about the future
of education. The process itself fosters intellectual growth and a deeper appreciation for the
complexities inherent in the pursuit of higher learning.

Imagery in the Old English Poem Beowulf Essay
Popular Imagery in the Old English Poem Beowulf
Some popular elements of imagery in Beowulf are the mead hall, the sea, swords,
armor including shields. Let us discuss these items and, where applicable, the
archaeological support for them.
Remaining true to the Anglo Saxon culture s affinity for mead (ale/beer/wine), the
characters of Beowulf partake frequently of the strong beverage. And the mead hall
was their home away from home, with more entertainments than just fermented
beverages: gold and treasure at huge feasts ... the words of the poet, the sounds of the
harp. Needless to say, with the world s greatest mead hall ... Hrothgar s people lived in
joy. after a mead party the Danes ... knew no sorrows. When... Show more content on

That was ... the greatest of sorrows. Wiglaf, in censuring the ten who deserted their
chief, said, At the ale bench he often gave you ... helmets and armor. In this classic
poem, can there be anything more vital or essential to joyful living, or to conducting
business, than the mead hall?
T. A. Shippey in The World of the Poem (45) says:
Some objects in fact reach mythic status most obviously halls. What the poet thinks
about these can be derived most immediately from his run of twenty to thirty
compound words for describing them. Halls are for drinking in winehall, beerhall,
meadhall; they are filled with people in guesthall, retainer hall; in them worth is
recognized in goldhall, gifthall, ringhall. They are also the typical, though not only,
setting for festivity and poetry.
The only archaeological evidence of what Heroic Age royal halls in England were
like, comes from the Yeavering in Glendale in present day Northumberland, where
the site of one of the royal townships of the English kings of Northumbria has been
identified and investigated (Arnold 91). The location corresponds to Bernicia, the
northernmost Anglo Saxon kingdom. There archaeologists have uncovered evidence
of a complex of seven large structures surrounded by eleven smaller ones the royal
villa mentioned by Bede of a seventh century English king (Cramp 132). Each of four
of the halls are

For the most part they travel to attend conferences and or teach finance classes in the
evening to build their clientele. Financial advisors work tends to be less stressful
than other financial occupations. Advisors held about 249,400 jobs in 2014. A
consultation is the initial part of the process when a personal financial advisor
works with a client, this in person meeting will involve creating a financial plan
that can help a client with recommended improvements, investments or any
identifiable problems. The employment of financial advisors from many industries
such as, other financial investment activities 29%, securities and commodity
contracts intermediation and brokerage 23%, credit intermediation and related
activities 16%, management of companies and enterprises 3%, and professional,
scientific, and technical services 3%. One in five personal financial advisors was
self employed in 2014. The employment of personal financial advisors is projected
to grow 30 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all
occupations. Most advisors work a full time schedule and about 3 in 10 worked
more than 40 hours per week in 2014. The prospect of jobs for personal financial
advisors should be relatively favorable compared with prospects in other financial
sector occupations. Financial advisors who were to get certified would have the best
prospects for jobs. Financial advisors are ranked
Research Paper On Beatrix Potter
150 years ago, Helen (Beatrix) Potter, one of best known children s author, was born
July 28th, 1866 in London, England. Both of her parents were interested in art and as
a result, Helen had the opportunity to meet other important artists. During her early
childhood, she and her brother were fascinated by things in nature and sketching
animals was one of her favorite things to do. As she grew up, she studied at the
National Art Training School in the late 1870s to help with her develop her talents.
Beatrix Potterfound other ways of producing her illustrations other than books. She
found some success by selling her illustration to be used to produce greeting cards.
She also had drawings and paintings featured in many museums such as the Victoria
and Albert Museum in London.
In 1902, The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published. This book originally began as a

The First Day Of September 1939
On the first day of September 1939, the whole globe was about to witness the
deadliest war ever recorded in history. This devastating war lasted for six years.
The Allies victories in World War II came from the sacrifices made by the US
Marines in order to win many battles. However, in order to make these sacrifices
for the prosperity of the Allied forces and their struggle against Adolf Hitler s
National Socialist Party and his own allies, Japan, Italy, and the USSR, one must
go through intense preparation and learn what it means to be a US Marine. In
order to become a Marine, one requires a certain number of weeks of training. Over
the course of the war, these numbers fluctuated, as low as four weeks and as high as
eight weeks, but in the end the required amount was finalized as seven weeks.
During these weeks the newly recruited boots marched for miles under the drill
instructors vigorous and watchful eyes on a regular basis. They also learned over a
thousand subjects, including hand to hand combat, interacting with weaponry and
other equipments, gallantry, and many others. Using the rifle was one of the most
important and special subjects. Over the course of time, all the boots learned to
grow a close relationship with their guns. As an unknown individual once said, ...We
did not know how comforting it would be among enemies, or that we would feel
alone and naked without it.... Then there was Record Day, which was a whole day
dedicated to shooting targets. All the
Nationalism s True Identity Has Always Been Faulty
Nationalism s true identity has always been faulty. It is simply the idea that one s
country is better than another based on the sole premise that they were born there.
Over time, nationalism has not changed. People just began to use it differently, or
more specifically, with more pride and violence. This change can account for the
increasingly problematic events in Europe from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries.
Like any grouping system, such as religion, differences inevitably cause disputes.
Wars between religions have been occurring since the beginning of time to the
present day. It was no surprise that nationalism resulted in wars amongst and within
countries. Nationalism is rooted in people s emotions and is fueled from agreement.
It leaves no room for peace in a world consisting of different countries. Similarly,
when social, economic, and religious differences within a country clash, nationalism
becomes self destructive. The ideals of nationalism, seemingly harmless at first
glance, can be easily manipulated and tremendously destructive to a worldly society.
Nationalism s identity has always been flawed, simply becoming more apparent and
deadly with time. Not only do historians classify nationalism as an ideology, but they
believe it carries enough significance to be called a political movement , thanks to
power hungry leaders. Although nationalism has roots that date back well before the
eighteenth century, its emergence transpired slowly, yet rapidly. Evolving
The Roman Colosseum Essays
The Roman Colosseum, a colossal amphitheater, was built in the first century under
Flavian s rule. Many events such as gladiator games, beast fights, naval battles, and
much more took place inside the huge elliptical arena. People of all ages and classes
attended these well known spectacles. The Colosseumis a huge Roman architectural
achievement and the fact that it is still standing today only amplifies the importance
of this structure. Hundred of thousands of people attended the ancient games, and
even more continue to visit the arena today.
According to Richard Watkins, author of the book Gladiator, a typical day at the
games was filled with plenty of excitement and eager fans waiting to see the
upcoming events. A day at the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Colosseum s technical name is the Flavian Amphitheater, so called in praise of
the emperor who oversaw its creation. The Colosseum was begun in the year AD 72
and was still uncompleted at the time of Vespasian s death in 79. He was succeeded
by his elder son, Titus, who undertook the completion of the Flavian Amphitheater. It
was officially opened in AD 80 for the inaugural games.
Although the original name of this dynamic building was the Flavian Amphitheater,
several centuries after being built it was referred to as the Colosseum, a lasting title.
The building received this nickname from a statue that stood near the site of the
arena. According to Pearson, the statue originally was of Nero, but Vespasian
changed the head of the statue to the sun god, Apollo. And it was this colossus, with
Apollo s head, that gave the arena its infamous name, the Colosseum.
The Colosseum was built in a valley found between the Esquiline, the Palatine, and
the Caelian hills. The spot chosen, where Nero s lake used to be, was interesting and
made a bold statement. Where Nero had built for his own pleasure, the Flavians built
a massive structure for the public good.
The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater of the time period. It was a huge
elliptical structure consisting of four stories, over 150 feet high. It measured 620 X
513 feet. The enclosed oval arena measure 287 feet long X 180 feet wide.
Around the arena was a high, protective

Recommendations Using and managing a sockpuppet is an endeavor that
necessitates vigilance, training, and proficiency. The role of the sockpuppet is still
developing across the Internet, and it is important to recognize the historical
significance of pseudonyms and anonymous speech. Additionally, it is critical to
remember the unique, primarily autonomous nature of online communities, and the
negative impact that mandated identification could have on free speech. The value of
anonymity found in the use of a sockpuppet is profoundly connected to the
establishment of the United States of America. Although John Hancock and several
others signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution with their real
names, pseudonyms forged the journey to the freedoms outlined in those documents.
These early examples of sockpuppets disseminated publications which united
colonizers to fight for independence. The question of anonymity was not as important
as working together to fight persecution. The Silence Dogood letters, Common Sense,
The Federalist Papers, and other writings exemplify an author s purpose for
anonymity. This initial use of sockpuppets during the American Revolution carved a
precedent for the importance of anonymity and pseudonymity in the United States,
and, therefore, led to the First Amendment of the Constitution. As the world
continues to struggle with the pressure to challenge authority anonymously,
sockpuppets in online communities present a new playing
Taking a Look at Celtic Music
Celtic Music
When Celtic music comes to mind, nowadays, the first thing people think of is
something to do with maybe something to do with the group Riverdance, a famous
Irish step dancing group, the Irish musician, Enya. Celtic music has almost become
more of the New Age music, the relaxing and soothing comfort music that people
feel the need to listen to when they relax, or just to escape from reality, but it used
to be something else before it has evolved into New Age Music . It is as almost if
people have forgotten what Celtic music really was and changed it from what it
originally was.
Celtic music, to most of the musicians of the past consider Celtic music to be
classified as traditional music; the traditional musicians and composers are actually
offended in modern times because now using the word Celtic almost as a marketing
technique, if it has a lick of something pertaining to Ireland, throw it in the Celtic
music category at the record store, and the traditionalist feel like that the
entertainment industry are basically bastardizing what they felt was more important
than making a quick buck, thus making people really forget where and how Celtic
music got started. It can be easy for people to think that Celtic music is originated in
one specific country, but that is not the case. So what exactly IS traditional Celtic
music? Not to be confused with the basketball team, the Boston Celtics, which the
pronounced with the soft c pronunciation, so literally
Eminent Domain Should Be Used For The Good Of
Mankind Essay
Imagine getting a visitor at your front door, and the visitor offers you a very
generous amount of money for them to take you property for public use. For some
people it is the property they grew up on, and for others it is the property that has
been passed down through family generations. That is what happens when private
propertyowners experience eminent domain. Eminent domain can be a wonderful
thing for big companies and powerful leaders. On the other hand, people lose their
homes, or perhaps their farmland. Those who offer eminent domain often have big
plans that can benefit a community, but the huge loss here is people losing their
homes. Most companies will only enforce eminent domain if they have no other
choice. Other companies do it purely for themselves. Eminent domain should be
used for the good of mankind, because it has the power to put some good places in
this world if done correctly. Doing some research on eminent domain I came across
the April 2010 issue of the Yale Law Journal. One of the notes in that issue mentioned
the history of eminent domain, and it was called Eminent domain due process by
Zachary Hudson. Hudson talks about how after eminent domain was founded; it was
argued that it the power of eminent domain was or was not in the Constitution.
Hudson says that Congress did not pass a statute authorizing the use of eminent
domain more generally until 1867 when it did so to aid in the development of
national cemeteries following the civil war

team demolished almost every team they played. They won the Caribbean world
series and had many nicknames like Death Row. They are still considered the best
Caribbean team ever created.
In his first season in Canada, he did not play very much. This is true because the
Dodgers wanted to keep him a secret from other teams. They did this by benching
him when every he was good. They had trouble with this because he was a great
player, and got benched almost every game. This did not work because Clemente got
benched so many times he wanted to quit. Fortunately for him, the owner of the
Dodgers Branch Rickey resigned and then became the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates

signed the offer and became a Pittsburgh Pirate. Clemente was in Puerto Rico at the
time and admitted to not knowing where Pittsburgh was. Clemente almost never
had been to the U.S. and did not know how many racial barriers he had to conquer
in order to become successful. The press was making fun of him and hated him just
because he was Spanish and African American. Some examples of what the press

Roughly a decade after founding Facebook Zuckerberg truly demonstrated his
generosity by signing up for a pledge known as The Giving Pledge. In effort to help
solve humanity s dilemmas, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates founded the pledge, which
is intended to encourage the wealthiest humans on the planet to donate at least half of
their earnings to philanthropic causes. At only 30 years of age to have the
moderation, maturity and especially the generosity to join the pledge is something I
truthfully admire. Improving time and work management has been a goal I have set
for myself the last couple of years. How Mark Zuckerberg managed his time and
the work that Harvard and the creation of billion dollar idea takes is something I
would like to experience how. College in its self is hard enough, and going to
Harvard is demanding, but materializing a multibillion dollar idea while at Harvard
is just way beyond insane. How he made Facebook successful under the
circumstances he was already dealing with makes me want to have that experience
to develop the work and time management skills he has which completely amazes
me. Mark Zuckerberg s inventive thinking changed the ways humans interact
socially; however before the Facebook era Steve Jobs completely innovated

On October 6, 1978, Khomeini was expelled from Iraq and moved to Paris, where he
was accessible to a larger body of opposition forces. He was also accessible to the
Western Press. Khomeini preached that he would displace the Shah and expel the
foreigners. He also said he would enforce religious and traditional values, and redirect
Iran s wealth away from large industrialization schemes and toward reforms needed
by the common people. Throughout the 1970 s, Khomeini gained tremendous
popularity with the masses, and he became the symbol of the opposition towards
the Shah. As Khomeini gained popularity, many religious groups grew in numbers
and in status. In the early 1950 s, the technocrats had showed core support for
Mohammad Mossedeq and Iran s national movement. They saw Mossadeq s
overthrow as the removal of the symbolic leader of the Iranian nation by an
American directed coup d etat. Many of his followers formed groups in opposition to
the Shah. Leaders of the Freedom Front, one of the groups that grew out of the
Mossadeq movement, were a group composed of intellectuals who tended to be
centrist in philosophy, more religious, anti Marxist, and militant
(Cottam 13).
They recognized Khomeini s large and potentially enormous following, and
associated themselves with him. The rise of religious opposition groups and Khomeini

Organizations today operate within an environment of change. As this environment is
so dynamic, it is crucial for organizations to constantly reinvent themselves. It is
important, therefore, to continually adapt and move on. Nowhere is this more true
than in the modern business environment, where today s technology becomes out of

congress commenced in 1862. With cities throughout the nation s original thirteen

was time to pack our bags and start our life over by moving westward. However,
this was easier said than done as the transcontinental railroad was not completed

and risky expedition, but we all prevailed and my father ended up starting a very

A Career As A Sound Technician
Sound technicians work in a variety of different areas, from television advertisements
and television panel shows to feature films and sporting events that are covered on
live TV. Generally, sound technicians who work on the production side of things are
responsible for checking and preparing all the sound equipment for shoots, carrying
out additional practical tasks to minimise unwanted sounds on set, evaluating the
acoustics of a particular studio or location, and positioning recording equipment in the
right place at the right time. Furthermore, they will tweak sound levels and monitor
audio signals during filming. Some sound technicians specialise in one particular
area, such as boom operators. These guys operate the boom microphone, positioning
it in the optimal place (where it won t go into shot!). If the boom is hand held, this
can often be a physically strenuous job. These guy s precise movements are planned
meticulously, and they might also position other microphones around the set to

Plastic Bags And Its Effect On The Environment
Throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s, there were as many as 10 other
plastic grocery bag designs available, including a flat bottomed one that could
stand on its own. But by 1984 the T shirt bag was the only style in use. Plastic bags
didn t become cheaper than paper bags until the early 1980s when Windmoeller
and Holscher introduced a machine that produced 500 bags a minute and Mobil
Chemical challenged Celloplast s patent the T shirt bag and won. In 1982, plastic
bags had eight percent of the sack market. According to the Food Marketing
Institute, today, 96 percent of U.S. groceries use plastic bags, and seven percent
offer only plastic, (The Environmental Magazine, Koontz Tracy) Throughout the
history of the United States, plastic bags have served in supermarkets or grocery
stores for the half of century. It built the base of the systems of transporting goods,
products, food and so on. With the enjoyable convenience, plastic bags harm to the
environment is highly concerned. California is getting closer to approving a
measure that would make it the first state to ban grocery, convenience, and other
stores from handing out single use plastic and paper bags. The measure passed the
Assembly in June and is now in the Senate. The law, a first for the country, would
take effect in 2012. It would require shoppers who don t bring their own bags to buy
either paper bags made of at least 40 percent recycled material or reusable totes.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Early Language...
From the moment we are born, our environment prepares us for this journey we call
life. We learn to communicate both verbally and non verbally. In my opinion and
based on three studies, socioeconomic status, the child s gender, the amount of
language they hear from their caregivers, word mapping, and social intent all effect
the child s vocabulary size. According to Spencer, Clegg, Stackhouse, the links
between socioeconomic disadvantage and early languagedevelopment are well
documented with reports of up to 50% of young children from areas of
socioeconomic is advantage having language delay. According to Pasek, Golinkoff,
and Hennon (2006), research states girls showed a quasi linear positive gain in
language across secondary school, while boys began with a decline and then
accelerated.
To begin with, socioeconomic status is categorized an individual s or family s social
status regarding income and occupation. I believe children from a low
socioeconomic status have a disadvantage in learning language as opposed to a
higher socioeconomic status. Language acquisition is the process that humans can
perceive, dissect, and understand language. Much research has been conducted on
infants and children to support this. According to Spencer, Clegg, and Stackhouse
(2012), many young children in that are from areas of social disadvantage learn
words at a different pace than their peers that are more advantaged. Many studies
have been published to support this. However, one

John Stewarat Mill s On Liberty and the Subjection of Women
Born in 1806, John Stewart Mill was an English philosopher who highly prized the
Utilitarian belief system, or the doctrine of seeking the greatest amount of good for
the greatest amount of people. Among his various political treatises, On Liberty and
The Subjection of Women are excellent applications of his convictions in
individualism and negative government. Though the subjects of each work differ to
an extent, both are written in a dialogue format, and the general principles postulated
in On Liberty can be easily applied to the second work. Essentially, Mill seeks to
assert the importance of certain personal rights and freedoms, moral beliefs, and the
integrity of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mill counters with a social metaphor explaining the natural processes by which
unqualified candidates are excluded from certain positions no one demands that
blacksmiths meet certain physical criteria, for the ones who are best suited for the
job will naturally come out on top. He states, If the political system of the country is
such as to exclude unfit men, it will equally exclude unfit women (56). It is not the
government s role to tell women that they would be best served by keeping in the
home; it should be the woman s choice, and thereafter we must let the chips fall
where they may.
A second doctrine that Mill values highly in On Liberty is what he refers to as an
experiment in living , or an extension on the importance placed on freedom of
opinion. There should be different experiments in living...so that free scope be
given to varieties of character, short of injury to others (54). Mill encourages a
person to live in such a way as to engage in out of the box activities, and to use and
interpret experience in his own way (55). Essentially, mankind has much to gain by
being open minded, and much to lose by being stubborn. The comparison of the
subjection of women to slavery is similar to his examination of the Church in On
Liberty. Just as masters demand unquestioning obedience from slaves, so too does the
Church downplay individual thought, and stress absolute, mindless submission of
Christians to Church doctrine. As soon as
Nonverbal And Non-Verbal Communication
In human s daily life, communication is something that we do every day. It is an
indispensable part in people s activities. It divided into two types, verbal
communication and nonverbal communication. In general, verbal communication
means that people communicate with each other by means of language. Nonverbal
communicationis usually understood as the process of communicationthrough sending
and receiving wordless messages. Non verbal communication includes Kinesics (face
and body motion), Haptics (touch), Physical appearance, Artifacts (personal objects),
Proxemics (personal space), Environmental factors, Chronemics (perception and use

Negative Effects Of Color Blindness
Throughout World War II, it was found that analysis reports of aerial photographs
were more accurate when at least one member of the group of analyzers was
colorblind. Color blindness is a vision deficiency disorder, in which the eye
becomes more or less sensitive to color. This is the result of the malfunctioning, or
lack, of special cone cells in the eye. Although color blindnessmay seem beneficial in
a situation similar to war, most people with colorblindness find it to be a disruption
to everyday activities, and sometimes even a danger to themselves or people
around them. There are many significantly differentiating types of color blindness
that can be characterized with varying symptoms; however, many people do not
even realize they have a vision deficiency disorder, which is why color blindness is
difficult to diagnose. Overall, many humans carry a disorder that affects their vision
of the world, but few have been diagnosed, and even fewer choose to accept help
despite the diagnosis of their disorder (Colour Blind Awareness, Color Blindness).
Color blindness can be inherited in a variety of ways. This disorder can be
genetically inherited through sex linked genes, or autosomal recessive genes, from
two parent cells to a zygote. In these cases, the infant would be born with color
blindness, although the severity of the disorder could possibly change with age.
Color blindness may also be acquired, so a person may not become color blind until
later in life. In

Marginal Utility Theory, Product Differentiation, and...
Apply the concepts of marginal utility theory, product differentiation, and revenue
/profit maximization to some event in your personal, daily lives. [1] Marginal Utility
Concept Application From the three concepts at hand this is by far the easiest to
exemplify. According to Sloman and Sutcliffe the concept of utility is directly related
to that of satisfaction [2]. The satisfaction that one individual takes from consuming
something is called utility. Now when we consider the utility concept we must
differentiate first between total utility and marginal utility. Total utility is the total
satisfaction that one individual gets from consuming all the units of one same thing
during a specific timeframe. ie. We can analyze the... Show more content on

I remember this CV . It immediately drew to my attention that he had paid extra
attention to my CV as I included on it that I was undertaking an MBA and
planning to finish my dissertation by Aug 2007. That was definitely a
differentiator in my job application. Revenue/Profit Maximization Concept
Application The Profit Maximization Concept was the most complex of the three
concepts for me to actually understand. The argument that there is a very simple
profit maximizing rule: if profits are to be maximized, MR [Marginal Revenue]
must equal MC [Marginal Cost] [5] took me a bit longer than usual to decode.
What bugged me was that this is based on the fact that price goes down for every
unit we produce extra (demand and supply rule apply here) as there is more of the
product to be offered in the market, meaning that we can only sell more if we bring
our price down which is not the case. Now after having understood the concept, if I
had to redo the concept to be presented to non financials I would say there is an
even simpler profit maximizing rule: if profits are to be maximized it is so in the
point where marginal profit is higher. After understanding the charts and the tables
one realizes that that happens at MR=MC and then can go break his head learning
that concept. Now as an example I can relate this in a way to something that I have

The Quest for Truth in Heart of Darkness
Conrad s Heart of Darkness is set in Africa s Congo region, and his descriptions of
that place are stark yet full of the wonder of discovery as well as the shock that
comes from uncovering ugly truths. Conrad was purposefully vague in his setting for
Heart of Darkness; he never actually named the destination to which Marlow
journeyed. This may be because Heart of Darkness was more an inner journey than a
journey between places. Conrad juxtaposed his protagonist s inward quest with an
outward journey through the wilderness of dark Africa. The novel s climax was not
comprised of actions, but of moral discoveries and intellectual awakenings.

Conrad however, also used irony and some of the traditional connotations given to
darkness and to light were turned around in Heart of Darkness. In many cases
Conrad even attached both images to a single object as when he described eyes
that shone darkly or when he described men who were dark and glittering.
According to Said (1993), . . . much of Conrad s narrative is preoccupied with what
eludes articulate expression the jungle, the desperate natives, the great river, Africa s
magnificent ineffable dark life. In Said s opinion Conrad s use of symbolism,
metaphors, and irony was necessary in order to convey the story s themes.
Heart of Darkness begins on the Thames River within view of London. There,
Marlow begins his tale with the following statements related to England s primitive
past. And this also, said Marlow suddenly, has been one of the dark places of the
earth (9). Then he said, .... Light came out of this river since you say Knights? Yes;
but it is like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds. We
live in the flicker may it last as long as the old earth keeps rolling! But darkness
was here yesterday (9). Marlow followed shortly by speaking of the Romans who
came to conquer Great Britain. . . . They were men enough to face the darkness . . . It
is evident in these statements that the light being spoken of was civilization; the

Essay on Dracula and Women in Bram Stoker s Dracula
In the 19th century Bram Stoker wrote the infamous novel, Dracula. This novel was
composed in the style of letters, journal entries, newspaper articles and telegrams in
order to convey to the reader a realistic story. The story of Dracula is about an
ancient vampire who moves to London from his native country of Transylvania. In
London, Draculaseduces and bites a young woman by the name of Lucy Westenra.
When Lucy falls sick, no one knows how to help her because while Draculahas bitten
her many times she has always been in a trance. Lucy?s friends decide to join
together to combat what ever is ailing Lucy. In hopes of some help, Lucy?s friend
Dr. Seward asks an old mentor of his by the name of Dr. Van Helsing to come to

During the many times that Dracula visits Lucy he never shows his human form.
On one occasion Lucy says ?The air seems full of specks, floating and circling in
the draught from the window, and the lights burn blue and dim? (Stoker 158). This
is Dracula and for Lucy this would be even more terrifying because she doesn?t
know what has happened to her in the first place. However because the reader
knows what Dracula is, it makes his character all the more evil and horrifying
which is exactly what Stoker was aiming for. While the absence of Dracula?s
character does convey him to be frightening it also makes him dangerous because
you do not know when or where he will strike next. Bram Stoker makes Dracula
such a mysteriously evil creature lurking in the shadows, yet Dracula is always the
focus of the novel. Another example of this would be when Mina is staying in Dr.
Seward?s insane asylum while the men are out trying to destroy Dracula. At this
point in the story Dracula?s main focus is getting to Mina, which she doesn?t
know. At one point during the night Mina notices the window is open when she is
positive she shut it. Right away she sees a kind of mist that floats into the room.
Then she notices that it ?got thicker and thicker, till it seemed as if it became
concentrated into a sort of pillar of cloud in the room through the top of which I
could see the light of the gas shining like a red eye?

This step requires learning the rules. The rules of Ultimate Frisbee can be best
described as a mix of soccer and football. An Ultimate frisbee field is 100 yards
long by 40 yards wide, with fifteen yards of either end of the length of the field
being designated as the endzones. To start, each team sends seven players to the
front of each endzone and one team will throw the frisbee off to the other team in
what is called a pull . This can be compared to a kickoff in football. Just like
football, the goal of the game is ultimately to pass the frisbee to someone in the
endzone to score a point. However unlike football and more like soccer, the game
is played continuously without stoppage until someone scores. What is unique to
frisbee is that when a player possesses the frisbee, they are not allowed to move.
They must keep on foot planted until they throw the frisbee to a teammate. After a
team score the will pull the disc to the other team at the opposite the one previously
scored in. A normal Ultimate Frisbee game is played in a 90 minute time frame,
with victory coming to the first team to score 13 points. If time runs out in the
middle of play, then play will continue until someone scores. If at the end of that
possesion, the score is tied, then the scoring team will pull the disc one more time in
what is called Ultimate Point . In this case, the team who scores

Francis and Fred (2009, p.69 76) was of the view that management must continuously
be the main element palpating the pulse of the specific organization and at all times

cardinal contributors to a success within an organization are the way in which that
particular organization is governed, the way it attains and establishes its goals and
objectives, its strategies to promote ethics, and if the strategic maintenance of aspects
that reflect a healthy organization. To effect change and allow for full operations to

Confirmation Of Constitution
Confirmation of a constitution is a strong move that makes the drafted document the
law of the specified land. It should be supported by majority parties involved. As an
editor of the New York newspaper, I do not support the ratification of the United
States Constitution in 1788 because it tends to conquer and violate some necessary
procedures. I believe reasons such as defects in the post revolution War articles of
confederation and lack of central authority over foreign and domestic commerce that
lead to the drafting of the document was not substantial enough initiate the
documentation of the constitution. The material happens to lack fare terms that apply
to all the parties, therefore, could not be signed or ratified into law. The document

Crystal Cathedral Research Paper
When someone thinks of a scared place, most will think of places that almost
transport a person to a different time. This could be a place built a 1,000 years ago
or 300 hundred years ago. Many wouldn t think of a something built or created thirty
or sixty years ago. There are these new creations that are used for frequent or daily
devotions. The Crystal Cathedralwas completed by architect Philip Johnson, who
completed the project that was begun by Dr. Robert H. Schuller. The cathedral is
twelve stories tall designed in a wedge shaped contour. The building is composed of
more than 10,000 panes of silver glasses attached by silicone for flexibility during
earthquakes, makes it one of the largest glass structures in the world. Though not
technically a cathedral as the cathedral does not actually... Show more content on

This religions shrine is located in Hong Kong and was created by a former
philosophy teacher Rev. Yuet Kai Fai Sei. Construction began on the shrine in
1949 and was completed in 1957. Rev. Yuet Kai Fai Sei renounced all earthly
possessions and crossed China on foot before settling in the lush hills of Sha Tin, a
suburb of Hong Kong. The shrine is composed of a monastery and temple complex
that holds around 13,000 images of the Buddha. These images are large and small,
and no two are the same. These modern creations are more accessible for daily
devotions compared to such sites as the Hanging Monastery which is located in
China. This site is is home to a group of temples connect by narrow stairways and
walkways on the site of a sheer cliff. The whole infrastructure is supported by slender
stilts. The infrastructure is safer than it might sound as the stilts are more of a
decoration. The pavilions sit farther back into the the cliff. The site is ecumenical
with Taoists, Buddhists, and Confucianists sharing a tiny temple with each group

Summary Of Sin In The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel
Hawthorne
Do your mistakes effect who you are? People make mistakes every day, but we must
choose how that affects us. In Nathaniel Hawthorne novel he explores how people
live with their sin. The three main characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and
Roger Chillingworth each had one thing in common: they all had sin they had to live
with every day. Hawthorne shows that sin changed their personalities and how they
lived their lives. This can be seen by examining the lives of Hester, Dimmesdale, and
Chillingworth.
Hester Prynne is an essential character in the Scarlet Letter who embraces her sin and
turns it into something positive. She is condemned for committing adultery and for
punishment she must wear a Scarlet Letter A embroidered on the... Show more

While preaching to Hester he tells her that she should reveal the name of her sinner,
and it s better not to, hide a guilty heart through life (Ch.3 Par.22). Even though it
burdens him to keep a secret he doesn t reveal it until his last day. While he is
standing on the scaffold in front of all the town, he tore away the ministerial band
from before his breast. It was revealed! (Ch.23 Par.27). The townspeople couldn t
believe what happened, they chose not to believe that he had committed the sin.
Dimmesdale was harder on himself then then the people around him were. Clearly
this shows Dimmesdale was hard on himself which changed his personality
dramatically, and made his life more challenging.
In response to Hester and Dimmesdale s sin, Chillingworth begins down a path of
revenge and ends up being consumed by his own sin. (Bell pg.5)n into his kingdom

him his sin is a secret. When visiting a tombstone, he refers to the weeds that are

Chillingworth is so caught up in his sin that when Dimmesdale confesses, his whole

Coral Reefs And Coral Reef
Coral reefs in Belize have declined in abundance over the past decade. The reefs
have experienced massive losses due to many local and global stressors such as
bleaching, disease, sewage, overfishing, climate change, and tourism damage. After
Hurricane Iris in 2001, the coral reef in Belize was left for the dead due to no
growth. Direct impacts such as hurricanes are associated with the loss of
architectural complexity of coral habitats. The loss of this coral reefcomplication
drives the decline in diversity and species richness. The widespread mortality of
corals also increases the chance of net reef erosion. These impacts are expected to
amplify calcium carbonate dissolution with negative consequences for the entire reef

Restoration projects strategically planned and mapped nursery sites and out plant
sites. This is the mostly widely used method for ecological recovery of coral reefs
which is also called coral gardening. Coral gardening framework has expanded to
planting ten thousand rehabilitated corals on degraded coral reefs in the Caribbean
and Western Atlantic. This method is based on two factors: the collection of coral
fragments within nurseries and the out planting of nursery grown corals onto
ruined reefs (Lirman, 2016). First, engineers took a few factors into consideration
what corals exist, and where, in proximity to the restoration sites. Next, donor
corals must be mapped and scoped to the location of the nursery and out plant sites
in the process. Past restoration projects in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic are
quite different from coral gardening. They depended on the transplantation of
corals from a donor site to a damaged site (Lirman, 2016).Coral gardening
techniques are a little different because this technique uses a small amount of
corals within ex situ or in situ nurseries prior to outplanting onto degraded reefs.
The key to coral gardening is to maximize coral productivity and survivorship.
While corals are in the nursery, they can provide an expanding source of corals for
ecological restoration. If there s a high productivity at the nursery, they will no longer
need to use more corals
Physics Of Bridges
Bridges are a connection of one place of the world to another. They link the vast
world together. Bridges were used thousands of years ago, especially by the
Romans. In the ancient times and present time, several forces are always encountered
when building bridges. The forces determine how big or sturdy a bridgewill be. There
are several types of bridges, such as the girder bridge, arch bridge, truss bridge, and
suspension bridge. Bridges have been used for a great amount of time. This allows us
to discover more about the forces of bridges and he variety of bridges today.
The earliest bridges, natural and manmade, were made from wood planks or logs,
and later from stone. The Romans, one of the greatest bridge builder of ancient time,

These bridges are made of trusses, which are patterns of triangles. The truss was
developed during the Industrial Revolution when people were finding ways to
develop better girder bridges. These trusses are now used to stabilize and support
other bridges, such as suspension bridges. Trusses are used widely because the truss
pattern is rigid and can dissipate weight throughout the truss. They can be commonly
found on girder bridges, because the truss pattern evens out the forces of tension and
compression. A deck truss, a type of truss bridge, is classified by having its roadway
above the truss. A through truss is another type of truss bridge that has the truss
above the roadway. There are various types of truss patterns, which include the K
truss, the Pratt truss, the Warren truss, and the Howe

Since the commencement of human existence, personal qualities such as: the pursuit
of knowledge, the desire to expand ones horizons, and the inclination to establish and
follow a dream, has significantly impacted society. From the earliest days, right up
until the present time, a number of accomplishments have filled the vast expanse of
time. Such accomplishments span from exemplary literary works, such as those of
Cicero, Virgil, and Goethe; to philosophical breakthroughs of men like Rene
Descartes who said, I think therefore I am , and finally to the unprecedented
discoveries in the fields of mathematics and science. Among all the civilizations of

Theoretically, one could probably say that that even the center of gravity for this
kind of triangle could be found by finding the intersection of all the medians, yet
the additional weight of the stairs may slightly throw off such an approach. The
rectangular base, being only two dimensional would therefore have a center of
gravity that is at the dead center, if an only if both sets of lengths and both sets of
widths are of equal weight. At this point one can conclude that the center of gravity
for the entire pyramid is at the height of the center of gravity for all of the triangles,
but joined at one point directly over the center of gravity for the rectangular base
(see figure3). The flummoxing part of this is that the Mayans would have never
been able to figure this out since Calculus and Isaac Newton would not come about
for hundreds of years, yet at the same time, the fact that the pyramids still stand is
evidence to their having an excellent center of gravity. The only plausible
explanations for this are: for one the Mayans must have ensured extraordinary
stability of their base by making sure that all angles were 90В°, second by making
sure that in Rectangle (base) ABCD, AB was equal in weight to CD, ensuring that
AD was equal in weight to BC, and making certain that all the triangles (sides) were
congruent in size and more importantly, weight. (See Figure 4) (Hartog 36). The

This Research Paper Look To Take A Deep Look Into The
Child
This research paper look to take a deep look into The Child and Family Services
Improvement and Innovation Act sponsored by Geoff Davis. It looks to understand
the reasoning behind the idea of this bill, taking a look at the staggering statistics of
children within the foster care system, as well as a fundamental understanding of
each component within the bill. There has been over 30,000 child increase in the
foster caresystem within the last few years that leaves us to ask a question asked by
the senator of Texas. Should this bill simply be renewed, or should funding be
increased to reflect these changes to insure that all children within the system see this
funding and receive the help during and after the time in foster care.... Show more

Finally, the unfortunate facts for case workers is they get burned out, they are
overwhelmed and overworked and as a result we see a high turnover rate
(Davenport, 2015). Whether the reasoning behind the increase is a result of positive
reasons or negative its significant jump is a sign of an issue. There are simply to
many children within the system needing families, therapy, and a stable environment
before harm is done.
The Child and Family Services Improvement and Innovation Act
The passing of The Child and Family Service Improvement and Innovation Act, H.R.
2883, was essentially put into place to counteract some of the dangers of the foster
care system. It Put in place more required regulations of case workers, but perhaps
also played the unfortunate role in the increased burnout of those within the field of
child and family services. Regardless of this potential repercussion, the bill holds true
intentions to make the system not only function better, but improve the care and
quality of child and family services. Put into federal law September 24, 2011, it has
been working towards progress and improvements within the system (H.R. 2883
(112th): Child and Family Services Improvement and Innovation Act, 2011).

NSA and DHS Surveillance Programs Essay
Ever since the invention of the telephone and telegraph, the concept of wiretapping
has been a concern. As early as the 1860 s, statutes were in place in some states
prohibiting listening in on telegraph communication. As the turn of the century
neared, along came the telephone, and with it, came wiretapping. From the onset, it
has been illegal in the United States for an unauthorized person to listen in on a
private phone conversation. It is even illegal to record your own phone conversation
if the person on the other end does not know it is being recorded (Harris, 2001).
According to Harris, historically, the law has not been as strict for the government.

In these early years of video surveillance, analog technology, using taped video
cassette recordings, allowed recorded data to be stored and kept as evidence
(Wilkerson, 2005).
The seventies became an age where video surveillance was used for everything from
law enforcement and traffic control to divorce proceedings. England put up cameras
in the Underground train stations as well as to monitor highway traffic flow. By the
1980 s, US businesses and banks adopted the practice, as the value of surveillance
quickly took off. In the 1990 s, advancements grew with the creation of digital
multiplexing, permitting multiple cameras to do recordings at the same time, as well
as features like time lapse and motion only recording. These advancements
revolutionized the surveillance industry (Wilkerson, 2005).
As the computer revolution continued, digital video surveillance became faster,
clearer and more efficient. Months of surveillance could be compressed on hard
drives, and images could be manipulated to improve clarity. From 1997 on, police
departments throughout the US installed video surveillance cameras in public
buildings, housing projects and began using mobile surveillance vans at political
rallies and other large gatherings under the auspices of the Technical Assistance
Response Unit (TARU). Even the invention of the nanny cam helped push the
industry to develop smaller higher
Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity
The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional
Mexican food is thought to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians.
Food was first hunted and gathered so that it was then cooked on ceramic pots or
iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for the natives. They
needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This
exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a
meal to eat, but also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone
has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one
person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are
each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others
prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an
example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexicoin the 16th century, and
they brought along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a
particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too would
have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a
strong attachment to corn. And while the introduction of wheat caused corn to be
thought of as nutrient deficient, Porfirian intellectual elites later found that their
maize was as equally healthy. Food matters, especially in the context of Mexico. It

Romeo And Juliet And Tybalt s Death
If you stabbed someone in the chest and the person dies doesn t that mean you
killed said person. One Hundred percent of deaths caused by a other person is
called murder. Romeo is the cause of Tybalt s death because Romeo stabbed him,
Romeo did not walk away, and Romeo acted out of pure anger and revenge. One
example that Romeo is the cause of Tybalts death because he stabbed him. Tybalt
straight took a blade to the chest from Romeo. After the death of MercutioRomeo got
into a fight with Tybalt and ended up stabbing him. They was first fighting with
swords but then they both ended up losing them in the fight so they started using
their hands. Tybalt was on the floor while Romeo got up and found a sword and
stabbed him while he was defenseless.
Family Program Essay
As an educational organization, the purpose of these programs is for children to
learn literacy skills and for parents/caregivers to learn skills to help engage children
with teaching skills at home. But family programs such as Storytime are also
designed as an opportunity for parents and children to bond, and for parents to learn
strategies for helping young children build early literacy skills from expert librarians.
Asked about what do they do to ensure the parents engagement, Moller thinks it is
important to keep in mind that programdesign should be about engaging the
community and providing them with a valuable service and experience. And to
successfully engage the whole family, it is great for program designers to inject their

The branch staff must mitigate the problem by advanced registration, ticketed

NYPL tries to meet this need of the community and provide services to a variety of
age groups and to families with diverse socioeconomic status. By the effort of both
sides, we hope that eventually we can mitigate or even eliminate the inequity in
society.

Among various organizations that focus on cultural events it is worth emphasizing
EnoB. EnoB (Innovative Bridge) is a non profit organization, intended to help the

The purpose of the organization is to provide various edutainment (education and

Errors In The Alamo Movie
The Alamo was one of the most important events in settling the land in the western
part of the country. There are several movies about it but The Alamo 1960 is the
movie used for this paper. This film did an okay job depicting what really
happened in that two week siege from February 23, 1836 to March 6, 1836, so there
were some historical errors in the movie. A couple of the errors in the movie is that
the actual battle of the Alamowas fought at dawn when the enemies were asleep.
Another was how the Mexican forces were shown as the ones that wanted the battle
but in reality, they were the ones that were protecting what was theirs already. There
were also some inaccuracies with individual characters and event leading up to the
battle were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the movie, Colonel Fanin s men were killed before the battle. But in reality, they
were killed after the battle so the only real reasonable way they never made it is
because they didn t bring any supply wagons. Another error comes from one of the
dresses that Susannah Dickinson wore, the dress has a zipper, it s not possible for
her to have one on her dress since zipper weren t invented until 1914 and even after
that they were never used on dresses until the late 1930s. Another factual mistake
is how Bowie got a letter that his wife had died while he was away in the movie but
in real life she had died in 1833 and the battle was in 1836. In real life, it was her
sister that came and accompanied Bowie during his battle with the Mexicans. In
the movie, Jim Bowie is hurt during the battle by an explosion and he shown trying
to recover in a room on the bed. But in real life he wasn t injured in an explosion he
was trying to get well from an illness that symptoms that he showed made it be
believed that he had pneumonia, tuberculosis, or typhoid. In the movie, Travis states
that he is married but by the time of the battle he had already been
Ptsd Is A Whole Body Tragedy, An Integral Human Event
Of...
A quote stated by Susan Pease Banitt once said, PTSD is a whole body tragedy, an
integral human event of enormous proportions with massive repercussions .
Veterans returning from war should be able to overcome post traumatic stress
disorder by going to health professionals or getting help with counseling. What is
PTSD? Post traumatic stress disorder is a life threatening exposure in which an
individual experiences a flashback to a traumatic event, such as war. Combat
often substantially affects the soldier s minds, but post traumatic stress disorder
can follow after a personal assault too (Wiley, 875). Post traumatic stress disorder
develops in response to a traumatic event. About 60% of men and 50% of women
experience a traumatic event in their lifetime. For most people they will have the
symptoms of PTSD for about days or weeks after the event happened, but for
others the symptoms are way more sever and long lasting. The reasons on why
some people develop this disorder are still being studied though (Candy, 243).
PTSD is more common in at risk groups than as those serving in combat, but that
doesn t mean that people that serve as combat are less likely to get PTSD. At least
30% of men and women who served in Vietnam experience post traumatic stress
disorder. PTSD begins usually after a traumatic event but it can also be delayed for
many years. Most of the symptoms can improve gradually after a year but for some
the symptoms can last a lifetime (Blow et. al. 266).
The Role Of Masculinity
Looks are a part of masculinity too. They play an important role for transgender
people who are expected to look a certain way in order to pass as their gender from
others (Schilt, 2006). Schilt mentions that it s extremely problematic for transgender
men when it comes to looks because sometimes their bodies do not match with the
masculinitytraits of what the society expects. Peralta (2007) includes another
important quote from Connel and Messerschmidt and Messer support body
reflexive practice where the body is seen as both an active agent and as an object of
practice used to receive and produce genderdifferences (p. 743). The body is
important, it is what categorizes male and female based on their physical appearance
It is the image display of gender, a person wants to portray them as either male or
female. Many transgendermales are able to pass as men by appearance cues like their
hairstyle, clothes, and mannerisms without testosterones (Schilt, 2006). But there a
lot of times when trans men who do not have facial hair, or a visible stubble and are
often mistaken as young boys. Schilt (2006) also mentions that body structures is
also another category where a lot of trans men feel like they lack and feel
uncomfortable due to it. Body structures are important and for men, being tall is the
ideal structure and part of the cultural construction of hegemonic masculinity.
Unfortunately, many trans men, cannot achieve the ideal male tallness and
sometimes they are small
Ancient Rome Essay
The story of ancient Rome is a tale of how a small community of shepherds in the
central Italy grew to become one of the greatest empires in history, and then
collapsed. According to Roman legend. Rome was founded in 753 B.C. By 275 B.C.,
it controlled most of the Italian Peninsula. In the A.D. 100 s, the Roman Empire
covered about half of Europe, much of the Middle East, and the northern coast of
Africa. The empire then began to crumble, party because it was too big for Rometo

The millions of people who lived in the Roman Empire spoke many languages and
followed many different customs and religions. But the Roman Empire bound them

The earliest Romans believed that gods and goddesses had power over agriculture
and all aspects of daily life. During the 300 s B.C., the Romans came info increasing
contact with Greek ideas. They then began to worship Greek gods and goddesses.
They gave them Roman names and built temples and shrines in their honor.
The government controlled the religion of ancient Rome. Priests were government
officials, who were either elected or appointed to office. But by A.D. 100, many
Romans had lost interest in their religion. They became attracted to the religions of
the Middle East, which appealed strongly to the emotions. Christianity, one of the
Middle Eastern religions, gained many followers.
The Romans began their day at sunrise. Breakfast was usually a light meal of bread
and cheese. Most Romans ate lunch just before midday. For wealthy Romans, it
consisted of meat or fish and olives or fruit. Dinner, the main meal, began in the late
afternoon so that it would end before sunset.
Wealthy Romans ate several courses at dinner. Their first course might include eggs,
vegetables, and shellfish. The

  • 2. Imagery in the Old English Poem Beowulf Essay Popular Imagery in the Old English Poem Beowulf Some popular elements of imagery in Beowulf are the mead hall, the sea, swords, armor including shields. Let us discuss these items and, where applicable, the archaeological support for them. Remaining true to the Anglo Saxon culture s affinity for mead (ale/beer/wine), the characters of Beowulf partake frequently of the strong beverage. And the mead hall was their home away from home, with more entertainments than just fermented beverages: gold and treasure at huge feasts ... the words of the poet, the sounds of the harp. Needless to say, with the world s greatest mead hall ... Hrothgar s people lived in joy. after a mead party the Danes ... knew no sorrows. When... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That was ... the greatest of sorrows. Wiglaf, in censuring the ten who deserted their chief, said, At the ale bench he often gave you ... helmets and armor. In this classic poem, can there be anything more vital or essential to joyful living, or to conducting business, than the mead hall? T. A. Shippey in The World of the Poem (45) says: Some objects in fact reach mythic status most obviously halls. What the poet thinks about these can be derived most immediately from his run of twenty to thirty compound words for describing them. Halls are for drinking in winehall, beerhall, meadhall; they are filled with people in guesthall, retainer hall; in them worth is recognized in goldhall, gifthall, ringhall. They are also the typical, though not only, setting for festivity and poetry. The only archaeological evidence of what Heroic Age royal halls in England were like, comes from the Yeavering in Glendale in present day Northumberland, where the site of one of the royal townships of the English kings of Northumbria has been identified and investigated (Arnold 91). The location corresponds to Bernicia, the northernmost Anglo Saxon kingdom. There archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a complex of seven large structures surrounded by eleven smaller ones the royal villa mentioned by Bede of a seventh century English king (Cramp 132). Each of four of the halls are

  • 5. The First Day Of September 1939 On the first day of September 1939, the whole globe was about to witness the deadliest war ever recorded in history. This devastating war lasted for six years. The Allies victories in World War II came from the sacrifices made by the US Marines in order to win many battles. However, in order to make these sacrifices for the prosperity of the Allied forces and their struggle against Adolf Hitler s National Socialist Party and his own allies, Japan, Italy, and the USSR, one must go through intense preparation and learn what it means to be a US Marine. In order to become a Marine, one requires a certain number of weeks of training. Over the course of the war, these numbers fluctuated, as low as four weeks and as high as eight weeks, but in the end the required amount was finalized as seven weeks. During these weeks the newly recruited boots marched for miles under the drill instructors vigorous and watchful eyes on a regular basis. They also learned over a thousand subjects, including hand to hand combat, interacting with weaponry and other equipments, gallantry, and many others. Using the rifle was one of the most important and special subjects. Over the course of time, all the boots learned to grow a close relationship with their guns. As an unknown individual once said, ...We did not know how comforting it would be among enemies, or that we would feel alone and naked without it.... Then there was Record Day, which was a whole day dedicated to shooting targets. All the
  • 6. Nationalism s True Identity Has Always Been Faulty Nationalism s true identity has always been faulty. It is simply the idea that one s country is better than another based on the sole premise that they were born there. Over time, nationalism has not changed. People just began to use it differently, or more specifically, with more pride and violence. This change can account for the increasingly problematic events in Europe from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. Like any grouping system, such as religion, differences inevitably cause disputes. Wars between religions have been occurring since the beginning of time to the present day. It was no surprise that nationalism resulted in wars amongst and within countries. Nationalism is rooted in people s emotions and is fueled from agreement. It leaves no room for peace in a world consisting of different countries. Similarly, when social, economic, and religious differences within a country clash, nationalism becomes self destructive. The ideals of nationalism, seemingly harmless at first glance, can be easily manipulated and tremendously destructive to a worldly society. Nationalism s identity has always been flawed, simply becoming more apparent and deadly with time. Not only do historians classify nationalism as an ideology, but they believe it carries enough significance to be called a political movement , thanks to power hungry leaders. Although nationalism has roots that date back well before the eighteenth century, its emergence transpired slowly, yet rapidly. Evolving

Many events such as gladiator games, beast fights, naval battles, and much more took place inside the huge elliptical arena. People of all ages and classes attended these well known spectacles. The Colosseumis a huge Roman architectural achievement and the fact that it is still standing today only amplifies the importance of this structure. Hundred of thousands of people attended the ancient games, and even more continue to visit the arena today. According to Richard Watkins, author of the book Gladiator, a typical day at the games was filled with plenty of excitement and eager fans waiting to see the upcoming events. A day at the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Colosseum s technical name is the Flavian Amphitheater, so called in praise of the emperor who oversaw its creation. The Colosseum was begun in the year AD 72 and was still uncompleted at the time of Vespasian s death in 79. He was succeeded by his elder son, Titus, who undertook the completion of the Flavian Amphitheater. It was officially opened in AD 80 for the inaugural games. Although the original name of this dynamic building was the Flavian Amphitheater, several centuries after being built it was referred to as the Colosseum, a lasting title. The building received this nickname from a statue that stood near the site of the arena. According to Pearson, the statue originally was of Nero, but Vespasian changed the head of the statue to the sun god, Apollo. And it was this colossus, with Apollo s head, that gave the arena its infamous name, the Colosseum. The Colosseum was built in a valley found between the Esquiline, the Palatine, and the Caelian hills. The spot chosen, where Nero s lake used to be, was interesting and made a bold statement. Where Nero had built for his own pleasure, the Flavians built a massive structure for the public good. The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater of the time period. It was a huge elliptical structure consisting of four stories, over 150 feet high. It measured 620 X 513 feet. The enclosed oval arena measure 287 feet long X 180 feet wide. • 8. From Sock Puppets to the First Ammendment to the... Recommendations Using and managing a sockpuppet is an endeavor that necessitates vigilance, training, and proficiency. The role of the sockpuppet is still developing across the Internet, and it is important to recognize the historical significance of pseudonyms and anonymous speech. Additionally, it is critical to remember the unique, primarily autonomous nature of online communities, and the negative impact that mandated identification could have on free speech. The value of anonymity found in the use of a sockpuppet is profoundly connected to the establishment of the United States of America. Although John Hancock and several others signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution with their real names, pseudonyms forged the journey to the freedoms outlined in those documents. These early examples of sockpuppets disseminated publications which united colonizers to fight for independence. The question of anonymity was not as important as working together to fight persecution. The Silence Dogood letters, Common Sense, The Federalist Papers, and other writings exemplify an author s purpose for anonymity. This initial use of sockpuppets during the American Revolution carved a precedent for the importance of anonymity and pseudonymity in the United States, and, therefore, led to the First Amendment of the Constitution. As the world continues to struggle with the pressure to challenge authority anonymously, sockpuppets in online communities present a new playing

Taking a Look at Celtic Music Celtic Music When Celtic music comes to mind, nowadays, the first thing people think of is something to do with maybe something to do with the group Riverdance, a famous Irish step dancing group, the Irish musician, Enya. Celtic music has almost become more of the New Age music, the relaxing and soothing comfort music that people feel the need to listen to when they relax, or just to escape from reality, but it used to be something else before it has evolved into New Age Music . It is as almost if people have forgotten what Celtic music really was and changed it from what it originally was. Celtic music, to most of the musicians of the past consider Celtic music to be classified as traditional music; the traditional musicians and composers are actually offended in modern times because now using the word Celtic almost as a marketing technique, if it has a lick of something pertaining to Ireland, throw it in the Celtic music category at the record store, and the traditionalist feel like that the entertainment industry are basically bastardizing what they felt was more important than making a quick buck, thus making people really forget where and how Celtic music got started. It can be easy for people to think that Celtic music is originated in one specific country, but that is not the case. So what exactly IS traditional Celtic music? Not to be confused with the basketball team, the Boston Celtics, which the pronounced with the soft c pronunciation, so literally
  • 10. Eminent Domain Should Be Used For The Good Of Mankind Essay Imagine getting a visitor at your front door, and the visitor offers you a very generous amount of money for them to take you property for public use. For some people it is the property they grew up on, and for others it is the property that has been passed down through family generations. That is what happens when private propertyowners experience eminent domain. Eminent domain can be a wonderful thing for big companies and powerful leaders. On the other hand, people lose their homes, or perhaps their farmland. Those who offer eminent domain often have big plans that can benefit a community, but the huge loss here is people losing their homes. Most companies will only enforce eminent domain if they have no other choice. Other companies do it purely for themselves. Eminent domain should be used for the good of mankind, because it has the power to put some good places in this world if done correctly. Doing some research on eminent domain I came across the April 2010 issue of the Yale Law Journal. One of the notes in that issue mentioned the history of eminent domain, and it was called Eminent domain due process by Zachary Hudson. Hudson talks about how after eminent domain was founded; it was argued that it the power of eminent domain was or was not in the Constitution. Hudson says that Congress did not pass a statute authorizing the use of eminent domain more generally until 1867 when it did so to aid in the development of national cemeteries following the civil war

He also said he would enforce religious and traditional values, and redirect Iran s wealth away from large industrialization schemes and toward reforms needed by the common people. As Khomeini gained popularity, many religious groups grew in numbers and in status. In the early 1950 s, the technocrats had showed core support for Mohammad Mossedeq and Iran s national movement. We learn to communicate both verbally and non verbally. In my opinion and based on three studies, socioeconomic status, the child s gender, the amount of language they hear from their caregivers, word mapping, and social intent all effect the child s vocabulary size. According to Spencer, Clegg, Stackhouse, the links between socioeconomic disadvantage and early languagedevelopment are well documented with reports of up to 50% of young children from areas of socioeconomic is advantage having language delay. According to Pasek, Golinkoff, and Hennon (2006), research states girls showed a quasi linear positive gain in language across secondary school, while boys began with a decline and then accelerated. To begin with, socioeconomic status is categorized an individual s or family s social status regarding income and occupation. I believe children from a low socioeconomic status have a disadvantage in learning language as opposed to a higher socioeconomic status. Language acquisition is the process that humans can perceive, dissect, and understand language. Much research has been conducted on infants and children to support this. According to Spencer, Clegg, and Stackhouse (2012), many young children in that are from areas of social disadvantage learn words at a different pace than their peers that are more advantaged. Many studies have been published to support this. However, one

It is not the government s role to tell women that they would be best served by keeping in the home; it should be the woman s choice, and thereafter we must let the chips fall where they may. A second doctrine that Mill values highly in On Liberty is what he refers to as an experiment in living , or an extension on the importance placed on freedom of opinion. There should be different experiments in living...so that free scope be given to varieties of character, short of injury to others (54). Mill encourages a person to live in such a way as to engage in out of the box activities, and to use and interpret experience in his own way (55). Negative Effects Of Color Blindness Throughout World War II, it was found that analysis reports of aerial photographs were more accurate when at least one member of the group of analyzers was colorblind. Color blindness is a vision deficiency disorder, in which the eye becomes more or less sensitive to color. This is the result of the malfunctioning, or lack, of special cone cells in the eye. Although color blindnessmay seem beneficial in a situation similar to war, most people with colorblindness find it to be a disruption to everyday activities, and sometimes even a danger to themselves or people around them. There are many significantly differentiating types of color blindness that can be characterized with varying symptoms; however, many people do not even realize they have a vision deficiency disorder, which is why color blindness is difficult to diagnose. Overall, many humans carry a disorder that affects their vision of the world, but few have been diagnosed, and even fewer choose to accept help despite the diagnosis of their disorder (Colour Blind Awareness, Color Blindness). Revenue/Profit Maximization Concept Application The Profit Maximization Concept was the most complex of the three concepts for me to actually understand. The argument that there is a very simple profit maximizing rule: if profits are to be maximized, MR [Marginal Revenue] must equal MC [Marginal Cost] [5] took me a bit longer than usual to decode. What bugged me was that this is based on the fact that price goes down for every unit we produce extra (demand and supply rule apply here) as there is more of the product to be offered in the market, meaning that we can only sell more if we bring our price down which is not the case. Now after having understood the concept, if I had to redo the concept to be presented to non financials I would say there is an even simpler profit maximizing rule: if profits are to be maximized it is so in the point where marginal profit is higher. After understanding the charts and the tables one realizes that that happens at MR=MC and then can go break his head learning that concept. Now as an example I can relate this in a way to something that I have

We live in the flicker may it last as long as the old earth keeps rolling! But darkness was here yesterday (9). Marlow followed shortly by speaking of the Romans who came to conquer Great Britain. . . . They were men enough to face the darkness . . . It is evident in these statements that the light being spoken of was civilization; the

  • 30. Essay on Dracula and Women in Bram Stoker s Dracula In the 19th century Bram Stoker wrote the infamous novel, Dracula. This novel was composed in the style of letters, journal entries, newspaper articles and telegrams in order to convey to the reader a realistic story. The story of Dracula is about an ancient vampire who moves to London from his native country of Transylvania. In London, Draculaseduces and bites a young woman by the name of Lucy Westenra. When Lucy falls sick, no one knows how to help her because while Draculahas bitten her many times she has always been in a trance. Lucy?s friends decide to join together to combat what ever is ailing Lucy. In hopes of some help, Lucy?s friend Dr. Seward asks an old mentor of his by the name of Dr. Van Helsing to come to London... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the many times that Dracula visits Lucy he never shows his human form. On one occasion Lucy says ?The air seems full of specks, floating and circling in the draught from the window, and the lights burn blue and dim? (Stoker 158). This is Dracula and for Lucy this would be even more terrifying because she doesn?t know what has happened to her in the first place. However because the reader knows what Dracula is, it makes his character all the more evil and horrifying which is exactly what Stoker was aiming for. While the absence of Dracula?s character does convey him to be frightening it also makes him dangerous because you do not know when or where he will strike next. Bram Stoker makes Dracula such a mysteriously evil creature lurking in the shadows, yet Dracula is always the focus of the novel. Another example of this would be when Mina is staying in Dr. Seward?s insane asylum while the men are out trying to destroy Dracula. At this point in the story Dracula?s main focus is getting to Mina, which she doesn?t know. At one point during the night Mina notices the window is open when she is positive she shut it. Right away she sees a kind of mist that floats into the room. Then she notices that it ?got thicker and thicker, till it seemed as if it became concentrated into a sort of pillar of cloud in the room through the top of which I could see the light of the gas shining like a red eye?

This step requires learning the rules. The rules of Ultimate Frisbee can be best described as a mix of soccer and football. An Ultimate frisbee field is 100 yards long by 40 yards wide, with fifteen yards of either end of the length of the field being designated as the endzones. To start, each team sends seven players to the front of each endzone and one team will throw the frisbee off to the other team in what is called a pull . This can be compared to a kickoff in football. Just like football, the goal of the game is ultimately to pass the frisbee to someone in the endzone to score a point. However unlike football and more like soccer, the game is played continuously without stoppage until someone scores. What is unique to frisbee is that when a player possesses the frisbee, they are not allowed to move. They must keep on foot planted until they throw the frisbee to a teammate. After a team score the will pull the disc to the other team at the opposite the one previously scored in. A normal Ultimate Frisbee game is played in a 90 minute time frame, with victory coming to the first team to score 13 points. If time runs out in the middle of play, then play will continue until someone scores. If at the end of that possesion, the score is tied, then the scoring team will pull the disc one more time in what is called Ultimate Point . In this case, the team who scores

Restoration projects strategically planned and mapped nursery sites and out plant sites. This is the mostly widely used method for ecological recovery of coral reefs which is also called coral gardening. Coral gardening framework has expanded to planting ten thousand rehabilitated corals on degraded coral reefs in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic. This method is based on two factors: the collection of coral fragments within nurseries and the out planting of nursery grown corals onto ruined reefs (Lirman, 2016). First, engineers took a few factors into consideration what corals exist, and where, in proximity to the restoration sites. Next, donor corals must be mapped and scoped to the location of the nursery and out plant sites in the process. Past restoration projects in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic are quite different from coral gardening. They depended on the transplantation of corals from a donor site to a damaged site (Lirman, 2016).Coral gardening techniques are a little different because this technique uses a small amount of corals within ex situ or in situ nurseries prior to outplanting onto degraded reefs. The key to coral gardening is to maximize coral productivity and survivorship. While corals are in the nursery, they can provide an expanding source of corals for ecological restoration. If there s a high productivity at the nursery, they will no longer need to use more corals

The rectangular base, being only two dimensional would therefore have a center of gravity that is at the dead center, if an only if both sets of lengths and both sets of widths are of equal weight. At this point one can conclude that the center of gravity for the entire pyramid is at the height of the center of gravity for all of the triangles, but joined at one point directly over the center of gravity for the rectangular base (see figure3). The flummoxing part of this is that the Mayans would have never been able to figure this out since Calculus and Isaac Newton would not come about for hundreds of years, yet at the same time, the fact that the pyramids still stand is evidence to their having an excellent center of gravity. The only plausible explanations for this are: for one the Mayans must have ensured extraordinary stability of their base by making sure that all angles were 90В°, second by making sure that in Rectangle (base) ABCD, AB was equal in weight to CD, ensuring that AD was equal in weight to BC, and making certain that all the triangles (sides) were congruent in size and more importantly, weight. • 47. Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is thought to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and gathered so that it was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for the natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a meal to eat, but also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexicoin the 16th century, and they brought along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too would have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a strong attachment to corn. And while the introduction of wheat caused corn to be thought of as nutrient deficient, Porfirian intellectual elites later found that their maize was as equally healthy. Food matters, especially in the context of Mexico. It had always been

  • 50. Errors In The Alamo Movie The Alamo was one of the most important events in settling the land in the western part of the country. There are several movies about it but The Alamo 1960 is the movie used for this paper. This film did an okay job depicting what really happened in that two week siege from February 23, 1836 to March 6, 1836, so there were some historical errors in the movie. A couple of the errors in the movie is that the actual battle of the Alamowas fought at dawn when the enemies were asleep. Another was how the Mexican forces were shown as the ones that wanted the battle but in reality, they were the ones that were protecting what was theirs already. There were also some inaccuracies with individual characters and event leading up to the battle were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie, Colonel Fanin s men were killed before the battle. But in reality, they were killed after the battle so the only real reasonable way they never made it is because they didn t bring any supply wagons. Another error comes from one of the dresses that Susannah Dickinson wore, the dress has a zipper, it s not possible for her to have one on her dress since zipper weren t invented until 1914 and even after that they were never used on dresses until the late 1930s. Another factual mistake is how Bowie got a letter that his wife had died while he was away in the movie but in real life she had died in 1833 and the battle was in 1836. In real life, it was her sister that came and accompanied Bowie during his battle with the Mexicans. In the movie, Jim Bowie is hurt during the battle by an explosion and he shown trying to recover in a room on the bed. But in real life he wasn t injured in an explosion he was trying to get well from an illness that symptoms that he showed made it be believed that he had pneumonia, tuberculosis, or typhoid. In the movie, Travis states that he is married but by the time of the battle he had already been
  • 51. Ptsd Is A Whole Body Tragedy, An Integral Human Event Of... A quote stated by Susan Pease Banitt once said, PTSD is a whole body tragedy, an integral human event of enormous proportions with massive repercussions . Veterans returning from war should be able to overcome post traumatic stress disorder by going to health professionals or getting help with counseling. What is PTSD? Post traumatic stress disorder is a life threatening exposure in which an individual experiences a flashback to a traumatic event, such as war. Combat often substantially affects the soldier s minds, but post traumatic stress disorder can follow after a personal assault too (Wiley, 875). Post traumatic stress disorder develops in response to a traumatic event. About 60% of men and 50% of women experience a traumatic event in their lifetime. For most people they will have the symptoms of PTSD for about days or weeks after the event happened, but for others the symptoms are way more sever and long lasting. The reasons on why some people develop this disorder are still being studied though (Candy, 243). PTSD is more common in at risk groups than as those serving in combat, but that doesn t mean that people that serve as combat are less likely to get PTSD. At least 30% of men and women who served in Vietnam experience post traumatic stress disorder. PTSD begins usually after a traumatic event but it can also be delayed for many years. Most of the symptoms can improve gradually after a year but for some the symptoms can last a lifetime (Blow et. al. 266).

The body is important, it is what categorizes male and female based on their physical appearance It is the image display of gender, a person wants to portray them as either male or female. Many transgendermales are able to pass as men by appearance cues like their hairstyle, clothes, and mannerisms without testosterones (Schilt, 2006). But there a lot of times when trans men who do not have facial hair, or a visible stubble and are often mistaken as young boys. Schilt (2006) also mentions that body structures is also another category where a lot of trans men feel like they lack and feel uncomfortable due to it. Body structures are important and for men, being tall is the ideal structure and part of the cultural construction of hegemonic masculinity. Unfortunately, many trans men, cannot achieve the ideal male tallness and sometimes they are small
