This document summarizes presentations from a seminar series on healthy buildings. It discusses how people spend most of their time indoors, so building design should focus on health and wellbeing as well as sustainability. Various aspects of building design are covered that impact occupant health, including thermal comfort, indoor air quality, access to daylight, and opportunities for physical activity. Strategies are presented for incorporating active design principles into building masterplans and designing residential buildings to improve visual comfort through access to daylight and views. Commercial building design can also impact occupant thermal comfort, and strategies are discussed for both winter and summer conditions. The benefits of designing healthy buildings include improved occupant productivity and retention as well as lower total costs for organizations.
