The Reinvention Of Retail Through Iot
The Reinvention of Retail through IoT
By Noopur Sane, Vishranth Chandrashekar and Aditya Lahoti
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used to describe the growing number of smart and connected
products. It consists of physical things such as sensors which have the ability to collect and share data.
Predictions suggest that over 30 billion smart and connected devices will be in use in the year 2020.
What are the avenues broadly where IoT could transform the retail sphere?
Inventory: Technology can undoubtedly revolutionize the retail backdrop. There are technologies that
can save any retailers from theft, cheating and evade inventory dysfunction.
Supply Chain: IoT related devices can resolve and troubleshoot supply chain issues. By ... Show more

For example, by analyzing video feeds Marketers can use visualizations to understand the impact of
different promotional displays or promotional signage and get a sense of how that s affecting customer
behavior in the store.
Applications of IoT is countless when devices, processes and people are integrated to form a complete
picture. Shoppers receive offers on their smartphones after communicating with beacons (a low cost
piece of hardware used to transmit messages or prompt to a smartphone or tablet), while
manufacturers and distributors receive alarms at dock doors when outgoing shipments are incorrect,
based on RFID readings.
Let us take a look at some of the industry use cases of application of IoT in retail:
Disney has RFID enabled MagicBand wristbands that provide theme park access, entry access for
guest hotel rooms, and cash and card free payment food and merchandise. All the activity in the park
is also tracked data that helps build a better picture of how guests use Disney services.
Online retailing giant Amazon is once again disrupting bricks and mortar retailing with the Dash
Button, a WiFi enabled device that is mapped to specific consumer packaged goods products like
laundry detergent. All that a consumer needs to do when the current supply is running low is to tap the
button stuck to the washing machine which generates an order, transaction and delivery of a fresh
supply of detergent.

Constructing Lego Robots
For the first robotics project, my team worked together to assemble a Lego robot and used NXT
software to program it to do specific tasks. The process of constructing the robot was one that was a
group effort, for there were many small pieces and components that had to be fitted together in a very
specific way. It was a learning experience for all of us, because none of us had ever used Legos to
build something that complicated nor followed such detailed instructions that were presented as
images with very few words. So not only did we get feedback from one another on how to construct
the robot, but we also put our heads together to figure out errors we made in the programming. In
accordance with the robot assembly instructions, the programming

Skeletal Muscle Case Study
Wisdom Teeth
1.) Skeletal muscles are used to maintain body temperature. Each muscle contraction in the body
converts some of the energy into heat. The produced heat maintains the right body temperature for
normal functions (Martini).
2.) Mr. Stevenson s skeletal muscles must have been generating the most heat in his body due to his
increased heart rate and his muscle contractions. Halothane has been shown to set off a skeletal
muscle hypermetabolic state known as malignant hyperthermia (Cunha).
3.) Cellular respiration starts to speed up inside muscle cells to produce more ATP, the body starts
breaking down sugar, breathing in oxygen, and exhaling carbon dioxide at a faster rate while giving
off more heat at the same time. C6H12O6 + 6O2 enzymes coenzymes 6CO2 + 6H2O + Release of

The brain and spinal cord are also used. Sensory neurons carry instructions to the Central Nervous
System. Exteroceptors provide information from touch, temperature, or pressure (Martini).
2.) The Somatic Nervous System includes all the somatic motor neurons that innervate skeletal
muscles. The axon carries the message away from the soma and the dendrites receive the information.
Motor neurons form the efferent division of the PNS which deliver information from the Central
Nervous System to the peripheral effectors in an organ system or organ (Martini).

The American Paradox By Michael Pollan Analysis
Redundant Contradictions Everyone is distinct in his or her own way, therefore, each individual has
different types of habits. Michael Pollan, a professor from the University of California, Berkeley, has
written a book that includes a section on something that he called the American Paradox. Emerging his
ideas from the French paradox, he has developed a concept in which he believed to be true of the
Americans diets. From his viewpoint, the relationships between the way Americans eat and balance
their nutrition and health is an inverse correlation. Pollan states that the relationship between the
nutrition of the Americans and their health and satisfaction are contrary, in which that when one factor
goes up, the other goes down. As illustrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We ve been told in the earlier years by nutritionists that some food are more healthy than others, but
only to be overturned by later studies. Pollan feels that this orthodoxy is very contradicting as
Americans have been assured about how having a low diet helps prevent health issues, but only to be
revealed by even more professionals that these foods actually have harmful effects on health, Sooner
or later, everything solid we ve been told about the links between our diet and our health seems to get
blown away in the gust of the most recent study (Pollan). They have been told that these foods are of
no harm, yet to only acquire health issues such as obesity later in their lives. For instance, my friends
tried to only eat foods that affirm a low diet, however, it has barely done anything to their health and
weight. Surprisingly, these supposedly low diet foods doesn t provide the vitamins enough for the
body to function properly (Miller). It has been said that low diet foods makes people want to eat more
than usual because these foods are mostly served in smaller portions that make people think that they
are eating

Poverty In America
Poverty is a big problem in America although outsiders see Americans as the rich . Poverty is defined
as not having money and being poor. Another way of defining poverty is not having the sufficient
needs to survive properly in this world and economy. The social problem of poverty is a severely
entrenched abrasion that diffuses every aspect of culture and society. Poverty is socially structured by
status. The main social component that deals with poverty is social class. There are three levels of
social class: lower, middle, and upper; all of which are often categorized by a certain amount of
money determined by the poverty line. Like stated in the book, To determine who is poor, the U.S.
government draws a poverty line. (224). Some of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They placed me in the Thrift Store and in the donation storage room. First, they gave me the task of
cleaning the windows in the store and straightening the clothes. Then, they gave me the task of
organizing donations. RIFA has set times anyone can just come and drop off donation items. In fact,
they receive many donations. Therefore, my duty was to go through and organize and sort these
donation items. There is a whole storage room full of donations that have been received. Like the duty
I had when volunteering, people take the donations and split it into the categories. Workers go through
the items to pick out what is useable and what is not. Some items are in bad condition and one must
dispose of them. They then take the items into the thrift shop. Items of all kinds are sold at a
reasonable price. Shirts were sold from one dollar to five dollars. A lot of clothing did not exceed five
dollars. The thrift store also has household and hygiene essentials. The food lunches are free to
anyone. Therefore, those who are hungry are given the opportunity to eat a hot meal. They aren t
having to starve or scrape for food anymore. I think this organization is very important and very
helpful to the social problem of poverty. While the items in the thrift store are still not free, it is
marketed at a price that is affordable to many people. This gives many suffering with hunger from
poverty are getting the opportunity to

Children Should Not Withhold Discipline From A Child
Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him
with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol .Proverbs 23:13 14. Spanking children is used as a
form of discipline if brought upon with a valid reason. Peoples opinions may very because everything
has an extent it can be taken to expressly discipline. Disciplining children has been an widely
controversial topic for many years as in the forms, the things used to discipline children, and the
extent. One of the many forms of discipline is positive discipline. Witch focuses more on encouraging
the child instead of focusing on the punishment. A parent using positive discipline might sit down with
the child and say, I know your teacher wants you to get your math paper done tonight and you don t
want to do it. What can we do to get that paper done so you ll be able to show Mrs. Smith that you got
all your homework done on time? (Morin 1). Another form of discipline is setting boundaries for your
children. Clearly stating the consequences to the child. You won t be able to use any of your
electronics tonight until your work is done. (Morin 1). Behavior Modification is another disciplinarian
action which focuses on consequences reinforces with praise. Remember, once you get your
homework done, you get to use the computer for 30 minutes. Praise would be offered if the child
chooses to comply. The parent would ignore any protests. (Morin 1). All of these forms of

Biography Of Baruch Spinoza s Theory Of Human Emotions,...
At the age of 20, Baruch Spinoza was banned from the Synagog, and from Amsterdam for his radical
believes. His masterpiece, The Ethics, can basically be considered as his guide for humans to achieve
absolute tranquility. His purpose is psychotherapy. It is his directory to living the right way and being
happy and content. He believes that in order to do so, one must truly understand the nature of two
major phenomenas. He, by breaking his book into five different parts, explains the true and absolute
nature of God or Nature, and the human nature. And thus, by truly studying the metaphysics of things,
one can use his therapy of the soul, which plays off of his theory of human emotions, in order to be
able to operate on the contents of his/her mind, and the emotions one produces. In such a way, humans
can finally find virtue and salvation.
The first step of the path to salvation, according to Spinoza, consists of humans changing the way they
understand God. To the author, God means something completely different than what humans
naturally believe. To Spinoza, God is Nature. God is everything. God is the one and only substance,
and everything else is merely an attribute or a modification of that substance. As Spinoza says: God,
or substance, consisting of infinite attributes, of which each expresses eternal and infinite essentiality,
necessarily exists . God is the ultimate reality outside of which nothing can be or be conceived. As
reported by Baruch: God s existence,

Run With The Horsemen Essay
Little Porter Osborne, Jr. grew up on a farm in Georgia where the people own the land and the land, in
turn, owns the people. In the novel, Run with the Horsemen, Porter fights his way through
adolescence and the depression, learning more about life every day from the big boys under the tree at
lunch. Ferrol Sams is able to portray a realistic account of life on a farm during the depression by
using humor, dialect, and vivid imagery.
Humor is used throughout the book to keep the reader interested in what would otherwise be a boring
story of hard work and hard times. The boring and tedious act of plowing is turned into a dangerous,
yet humorous, occurrence when a release of methane gas from the mule was met ... Show more

Although the members of the Osborne family speak properly, the farm hands (who were, up until a
short time before the novel, slaves), speak in a southern dialect which portrays them as uneducated. A
good example of this is when Buddy pleads with Porter to, Keep yo head down, Sambo! For God s
sake, keep yo head down an be stiller n you ever been in yo life befo! The same words are used as
would be used by an educated person, only they are shortened or run together.
The vivid imagery used throughout the novel allows the reader to have a better idea of what life was
like. The summer plowing is said to have a rhythm that is almost musical, The stride of a man
matched that of a mule in a one plane dance down a cotton row with ears of the mule plunging
forward then backward in unison with the pull of the forelegs, now the hind legs, as the heavy plow
was dragged smoothly through the whispering earth. This passage allows the reader to imagine the
rhythm of the plowing, which makes it seem more real than just saying that the mule plowed up and
down the row. All this plowing happened as, Over and above and beyond and around could be heard
bird song. The imagery of a man plowing in the heat with birds

Once you learn how to die ,you learn how to live ,this quote sums up most of the lesion Morrie is
trying to teach the readers. let me start from the beginning Mitch is telling us a story about his old
professor that has been diagnosed with ALS.It s a disease when your body shuts down slowly . Morrie
is teaching us how to live life in better ways before it s too late. The three most important aphorisms is
family,importence,memories.
To begin the first important aphorism that Morrie teaches Mitch is that Even though someone is dying
it s not gonna ruin the relationship it might make them closer. One example that Morrie states is Death
ends a life not a relationship (174). This is saying that even when Morrie dies Mitch and his bond or

One example from the text that morrie says There is no experience like kids and i would do it all again
(94). This quote is saying that kids are a wonderful thing when the time is right to have them and u
should give them the best life you can. One other quote i found was there is no better feeling than
having a child and the love they share (96). This quote is say there is something different about the
love for your child a love that s stronger than anyone else.
The last aphorism is once you learn how to die ,you will learn how to live. One example i got that ties
into the subject was without love, we are birds with broken wing (92). This example is explaining that
we are hopeless if we don t have long a bird can t fly if his wings are broken ,and that s what birds do
the most they can t survive. The last evidence is have is As i see it they have to do

diehard opponent. He and his friends converted and excavated gravel pits into a park where they
played fiercely competitive games; they called it the Pit. Jack Welch excelled academically as well. In

He was a Junior Rotarian, senior class treasurer, and a member of the Student Council. He was voted

repressive desire as to make a million. Welch did not win the Navy ROTC scholarship for which he
was nominated, and he had to put aside his dreams for going to Dartmouth for the less prestigious, but
less expensive University of Massachusetts. While at the University of Massachusetts, Welch majored
in Engineering, achieving high grades in spite of his active social life in an athletic fraternity. After

Classifying Types of Shoppers
Shopping is a big deal to most people in this particular century. People are trained to shop a few years
after they are born. People shop for so many reasons. Some people shop to release stress and others
shop just for fun. Some people even classify shopping as a hobby. Just recently, a new kind of
shopping has started dominating gradually. Online shopping is little by little vanquishing all other
kinds of shopping and it is all thanks to shoppers. Without these dedicated shoppers, shopping would
have been a thing of the past. These shoppers are classified into three sub groups which makes
identification easier. There are the cheap shoppers, the spendthrifts, and the indifferent shoppers who
simply don t carabout anything.
Foremost are the cheap shoppers. This types shoppers are also known as bargainers. They are easily
recognized in any store because they are usually armed with a calculator and search through the
hardest to get at shelves. They are often seen working in pairs. They call their selves tag team partners.
Working I pairs enables cheap shoppers to readily compare prices from items in different sections of
the store or two separate stores. These shoppers can be found mainly on the weekend, during a huge
sale, or in the clearance sections of stores. They are always shopping for cheap items and they are
never concerned about the quality. Bargaining is what they do best. It is their belief that no matter how
low the price is, it can always be reduced to fit

The Party Goers In The Great Gatsby
The boundless parties of the roaring 1920s reflected the wildness and new wealth being procured in
the vibrant era. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there is a scene depicting a party
at Mr. Jay Gatsby s, an extraordinarily wealthy and mysterious man, in which the attendees seem to
have joyous and exciting lives. However, under the surface their lives hold little meaning and can be
seen as depressing. Fitzgerald uses depictions of the attendees, descriptions of the food and drink, and
setting in order to reveal the dark undertone of the lives of the upper class. One way in which
Fitzgerald brings out the shallowness of the people is by describing the way they carry themselves.
The party goers are said to have enthusiastic meetings in which they never knew each other s names,
implying they never really cared about the people they were discussing with but only felt the need to

To help glamourize the events, Gatsby s servants put up enough colored lights to make a Christmas
tree of Gatsby s enormous garden. The correlation of the lights with the Christmas tree makes it seem
as if every party which Gatsby hosts is a holiday by itself where people are free to overindulge in a
self destructive manner. To gain entrance to these parties, the guests must go through blue gardens,
coming and going like moths among the whisperings and champagne and the stars. In the way that
moths and most insects gravitate towards fire and light in the night, the guests gravitate towards
Gatsby s mansion looking for protection from the darkness in their lives. The scene of the mansion the
day after every party involves servants working all day with mops and scrubbing brushes. The entire
day of work required to cleanse the mansion by a team of servants exposes how out of control the
people are who attend these parties that give no care to the reckless behavior they

Trap Music Thesis
How many of us can say we enjoy hip hop music in some form or another? I know I can, in fact I

of life. Although hip hop is very influential especially in the African American community, not enough
people touch the negative effects it has on our youth. The new age of hip hop or Trap Music , as it is

Our new wave of hip hop promotes more violence and drug abuse than ever before and also

its lyrics and visuals. One example of this is the War in Chicago and the death of its rappers due to this
form of music. In Chicago the youth has developed their own form of trap music known as Drill
Music. Drill is a trap subgenre which was created by young Chicago rappers and producers. Drill is a

defined by its dark, grim, violent lyrics and trap influenced beats. This genre of music is what most of

women from seeking help to detach themselves from a violent relationship. In reading Roz story, I

The Visit by Friedrich DĂŒrrenmatt
The Visit, originally published in 1986, is a play written by Friedrich DĂŒrrenmatt. DĂŒrrenmatt s play is
set in GĂŒllen, an industrial town on the decline that has found itself in troublesome times. When the
world s richest woman makes an undeniable offer, it becomes clear that the town s economy will be
saved, but only at an unthinkable cost. As the play unfolds, the rise and fall of the town and each of its
citizens becomes evident. DĂŒrrenmatt, a 20th century Swiss playwright, is well known for the
thorough development of characters in his works; in his tragicomedy, The Visit, he employs the use of
character development to illustrate the rise and fall of his two main characters, Alfred Ill and Claire
Zachanassian, as they progress from adolescence to adulthood.
In their adolescence, both Ill and Claire are presumably happy, as they are head over heels in love with
each other. The two are practically inseparable, constantly running off to the woods or Peterson s
Barn. Unfortunately, this all takes a drastic turn when Claire becomes pregnant and charges Ill with a
paternity suit. As an adolescent, not only is Claire charitable , but she also loves justice, which is why
she considers it a complete betrayal when Ill denies that the baby is his (DĂŒrrenmatt 6). When she
loses the paternity suit, the town essentially turns against her and banishes a pregnant Claire. She

Resident Evil: Retribution is a 2012 science fiction, action and horror film written and directed by
Paul W. S. Anderson. It is based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil.
10This film conveys women are like that of a stereotype of men heroic and dominant. There are a
number of countless fight scenes, which suggest the control and supremacy of females. In the corridor
fight, Alice uses a long chain to safeguard herself and achieves victory in the fight. A high angle shot

For example, Judith dies in the film and a number of other female characters are male controlled.
However, this was because the movie was made in the late 1970 s. Therefore, traditional stereotypes
have been used. Moreover, the movie Resident Evil Retribution was made in 2012 so the changes in
society have reflected in the plot of the film showing women can be of dominance. For example, Alice

stereotype which had appealed to a high number of audiences as stated earlier.
Above all, the females are represented as sex objects in Halloween. Most people think that it is
something virtuous and some people think it as immoral. However, I believe female representation as
sex objects is wrong as it portrays them as weak and they should not be perceived rather they should
be equal to men. Nonetheless, being depicted as a sex object should be up to the films whether they
are happy as being labeled as that.
Both films are indicating diverse representation of horror films. The film Halloween uses traditional
stereotype because it was set in early 1978. Therefore, it was different to what we expect in the movie
Resident Evil Retribution as it was set in 2012. This is because the film was modern and there were

Essay On Tim Hortons
The Tim Hortons chain was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. The chain s focus on top quality,
always fresh product, value, great service and community leadership has allowed it to grow into the
largest quick service restaurant chain in Canada specializing in always fresh coffee, baked goods and
home style lunches. The first Tim Hortons stores offered only two products coffee and donuts. The
selection of donuts to enjoy was highlighted by two original Tim Hortons creations, the Apple Fritter
and the Dutchie. They became the most popular donut choices in the 60 s, and remain two of the most
popular today. (Horton, 2008).
The Tim hortons restaurant franchise was founded by Miles Gilbert Tim Horton, a longtime
defenseman of the Toronto Maple leafs. Born in Cochrane, Ontario and the first child to Ethel Irish
and Oakley Oak Horton, Tim had a passion for his country and ice hockey and was naturally talented
hockey player. In 1948, the Toronto Maple Leafs sighned a contract with Tim and he moved to play
junior hockey in Toronto. He later turned played in the professional arena by playing for the Pittsburgh
Hornets, New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres. Miles Gilbert Horton was best known for his

Haitian Revolution
The Haitian Revolution
The Origin
The origin of the Haitian Revolution can ironically be traced to the Revolution that started in their
Mother Country France in 1789. In that year, the French people rallied and motivated by the
watchwords of Liberty, fraternity and Equality decided to begin the process that would radically
change the political and social order of France.
This revolution appealed to the Grand Blancs of San Domingue as the colony was named before the
revolution. They decided that it was an opportune time to demand more political power from the
newly elected Constituent Assembly in France. The Constituent Assembly denied them their requests.
In an unprecedented move, they called elections in 1790 for a General Assembly and ... Show more

Why was this Revolution successful?
(i) Good leadership. Toussaint provided skilled military leadership. He was ably assisted by Jean
Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe.
(ii) The rebels had the advantage. They knew the area better than the invaders. They were familiar
with both the territory and climate.
(iii) France was preoccupied with her own revolution 1789 1815. She herself was going through
different stages. At one point her leaders agreed with and tried to reinstate Slavery. At another time,
her new leaders, the radicals who disagreed with Slavery sent decrees to abolish it. (1794)
(iv) The troops sent from France to reinforce the local militia lost a number of their men within a few
days. They died from tropical diseases such as yellow fever.
(v) The division and rivalry between the Grand Blancs and the Petit Blancs gave the blacks time to
gather and plan their strategies.
(vi) The whites, engrossed in their own struggle were taken by surprise. Some fled the country leaving
their property behind. Many of these became bases of operation and headquarters for the rebel groups.
(vii) The slaves, unlike the whites, were determined to fight to the end, even if it meant death. After
all, they had little to lose in a society where they were seen and treated just a little better than animals.
(viii) The slaves were united by the strong bond of religion. They believed that they were indeed

Short Essay On Bedbugs
Bedbugs may be little creatures but they are great hitchhikers, very much capable of moving from one
infected site to another. They secretly hide on bedding, clothing, boxes, luggage, and furniture. But if
you really want to sleep like a baby at night and not undergo another bed bug war, here are some tips
to keep the little bloodsuckers out of your bed and hopefully out of your house too.
1. Make Sure that Your Bed Frame Has Feet
One of the most important things that you need to do is to ensure that your bed has feet. If it currently
doesn t have feet, you can always go to a nearby home store and purchase an affordable and simple
bed frame. Believe it or not, your bed frame will serve an important part in bedbug proofing your bed.
2. Put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the purpose why having a bed frame is suggested. The bed bugs may attempt to get inside the
bed bug coasters but will end up being trapped inside. Once the bedbugs are inside, they can no longer
climb up the bed frame. Choose the bed bug coasters that contain compartments because you can track
where bed bugs are coming from or how they go up from the ground and hide under the sheets.
3. If Possible, Move Your Bed Away from Walls or Furniture
This tip is not always possible for every homeowner as some are living in a small space. So,
depending on the size of your room, you can opt to position your bed away from the wall or the
furniture. If you can also put it away from anything that touches the bed, it would be much better. The
reason is simple: these walls or furniture linked to the bed is giving bed bugs a way to cross and reach
your bed while you are sleeping, which of course spells nightmares.
You can keep the bed at least one foot away. Also, bed bugs are not really capable of jumping from the
wall to your bed. So, even if the gap is just one inch, it would also be okay as long as your bed covers
do not also touch the furniture or wall around the bed.
4. Don t Let the Bed Cover Touch the Floor or

squares within the checkerboard. How many squares of various sizes are there? Also, how many
squares can be in any sized checkerboard (e.g. 9 by 9 checkerboard). There are many steps to figure

was 64.(Green should explain how you got 64.) To find 64 I simply looked at the top of the square and
added the squares up to get 8, and I did the same exact thing to the side of the square and got 8 then I

hair and brown eyes with no other distinguishing marks of note.
Chief Complaint
Harvey came to counseling because his wife has threatened to leave him over his drug use and he
wants to be able to work things out with his wife. He feels like there is no communication between his
wife and him and wants to find out how to discuss things without ignoring each other for a time. He
states that he smokes marijuana and that he has been since he was a teenager. Harvey states that his
marijuana use has escalated in the past year and he is smoking a lot more than he used to. He also
states that he does not have a good relationship with his children and would like to be able to relate to
them and have a better relationship. Harvey admits to having affairs throughout his current marriage
and states that his wife does not know about them.

Compare And Contrast Monet And American Impressionism
I visited the Monet and American Impressionism at the Hunter Art Museum in Chattanooga. This
exhibition was interesting to attend because I saw the displays and the art and then learned more about
them while taking this class. I absolutely loved this exhibit. There were many paintings of nature
scenes, portraits of women, and urban portrayals of cities. A couple of the artists displayed were, of
course Claude Monet, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, and Helen Maria Turner. Each of the paintings in
the exhibition were dated between 1880 and 1920 and stuck with the overall Impressionist style. There
were five prominent themes from this collection. These include Monet s Giverny landscapes,
Urbanism, country landscapes, domestic gardens and rooms, graphic prints. There was an overall
domestic theme of all of these paintings. They related to some real life landscapes I have experienced

Both of the paintings are oil on canvas, and painted around 1915. Girl in Blue portrays a woman who
is getting ready. She seems as if she is just going about her normal day s routine. However in La

her seem so much more youthful, but elegant. This painting uses more vibrant colors in the

The Textual Relationship Between Virgil And Lucretius
A number of research has shown the textual relationship between Virgil and Lucretius. Many have
noticed the unique use of gliscit by Virgil in 12.9 to describe Turnus reaction to seeing the Latins
retreat and have subsequently connected it to Lucretius, specifically passage 1.474: ignis Alexandri
Phrygio sub pectore gliscens clara accendisset saevi certamina belli . Although Virgil could have had
this passage in mind, there is another use in Lucretius which can bring new context and understanding
to Virgil s use of gliscit. Scholars before have noted the relationship between Aen. 12.9 and DRN
4.1069; however, it has not been analyzed why Virgil might be invoking this specific passage.
This paper proposes that Virgil uses gliscit to describe Turnus violent state in order to echo Lucretius
use at the end of Book 4 when he is describing the state of man under the duress of Venus . This
reference both reveals further aspects of Turnus character with subtlety and brevity and moreover, as
some scholars believe that Aeneas anger at the end of Book 12 mirrors Juno s anger in the beginning
of Book 1, in a similar fashion Turnus behavior in the end mimics the characteristics of the opposing
goddess, Venus.
I will begin this study by examining the origin and meaning of gliscere. The meaning of gliscere is
similar to other sc verbs in that it expresses the idea of growth, however, it has a rarer presence in both
Latin verse and prose until Tacitus and even then, it is

Setting Of The Most Dangerous Game
The setting that Richard Connell creates to The Most Dangerous Game is so important for the plot to
be believable. For instance, the story needs to be on an isolated island. If the short story was not on a
remote island than it would be very easy to escape from General Zaroff. So there would not be a story
to tell if his captives could get away easily. Since they are on an isolated island Zaroff does not have to
worry about them running or swimming away because where will they go. When Rainsford is getting
hunted he thinks to himself, He was in a picture frame, and his operations, clearly, must take place
within that frame (11). Rainsford realizes that he was trapped on the island. Another reason the setting

Social Institutions And Its Impact On Society
For sake of discussion, I used the words most influential only in a positive and/or inspiring sense,
meaning society would benefit most from these social institutions. Conversely, I could have argued
that the least influential social institutions are good and/or beneficial to our society, but our society
chooses to ignore them; and the most influential social institution plague our society. However, I chose
the former the positive and/or inspiring sense of the words. Social institutions are the organized, usual,
or standard ways that a society meets its basic needs (P. 104). Moreover, functionalists identify five
functional requisites that each society must meet to insure their survival (Pp. 104 106). With this in
mind, Family and the Economy are the most influential social institutions in industrial society. Henslin
stated in Chapter 3 that Our experiences in the family and other groups during childhood lay down the
basic orientations to life (p. 94). Families offer guidance as well as protection from the larger, and
sometimes hurtful, society. Furthermore, loving families provide socialization, identity, and comfort,
all of which have an essential role in the development of the self (Pp. 104 106). The economy is the
second most influential social institution in industrial societies. To fulfill basic needs, societies rely on
a strong economy to produce and distribute goods and services. Additionally, strong and stable
economies provide employment and job security to

Marxist Feminism And The Marxist Analysis Of Television Show
Marxist Analysis of Television shows In our society, there are many forms of mediated texts ranging
from newspapers and magazines to films and television shows. Each of these media forms can be seen
from different theoretical perspectives and analyzed to understand the different concepts that may
influence them. Television shows are one of the most popular media texts with approximately 400 new
shows airing each year (Ryan, 2016). However, it is often very unlikely for these television shows to
strive as 65% are cancelled after their first season (Ocasio, 2012). This then, brings Marxist scholars
into the picture as they are interested in how economic factors affect the production and distribution of
media content (Mack Ott, 2016). The Marxist theoretical perspective allows Marxist scholars to study
television shows in order to understand why they were cancelled and how certain roles in the media
lead to this. Marxism is a perspective that was first introduced in the mid 1800 s by Karl Marx and is
still applied to situations today. Marxism believes that the mode of production in society determines
the social relations of productions (Mack Ott, 2016). It is considered to be a materialistic philosophy
as it has a strong focus on the material world and how it plays a part in human thought. This helps in
learning more about the product consumption of the media industry and how social institutions such as
family structures, religion and education reflect on different

Measure For Measure
Measure for Measure is often described as a problem comedy because the themes and tones that are
presented in the play do not share the same optimistic themes and tones of Shakespeare s previous
comedies. The familiar formula that classifies Measure for Measure as a comedy are mistaken identity
(the bed trick ), disguise, the Duke disguises himself as a Friar to keep tabs on Angelo, Lucio as
comedic relief, and the resolution of the play with the multiple marriages of Juliet and Claudio,
Angelo and Mariana, and Lucio and Kate Keepdown. Although Measure for Measure fills the criteria
for comedy, it is set apart because of themes of judgement and justice, marriage and sex, and religion
and mortality. The cynical tone that Shakespeare presents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the Duke is in a position of authority, he has not been using his authority to enforce the laws
prohibiting his citizens from engaging in prostitution and having sex out of wedlock. The Duke is
aware of this when he points out: We have strict statutes and most biting laws,/ The needful bits and
curbs to headstrong weeds/ Which for this fourteen years we have let slip (1.3.19 21). In Measure for
Measure, sex outside of marriage is punishable by death, yet at the end of the play the punishment is
marriage for at least two of the pairings. Compared to Shakespeare s other comedies, marriage is not a
form of punishment but rather a goal for the couples to satisfy their mutual yearning for each other,
and their communities demand for clear kinship structures...to legitimate members of a new
generation (Maus 2040). For Claudio and Juliet, their union becomes official when the Duke orders
them to be married. As for Angelo and Lucio, marriage is a punishment. Angelo is ordered to marry
Mariana by the Duke after the bed trick of Mariana posing as Isabella is revealed to Angelo and that
since he was already betrothed to Mariana, the marriage is consummated. As for Lucio, he has to
marry Kate Keepdown, a prostitute who he shares a child with. For him he explicitly says marrying a

The clause reads, No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding

The content in which the author s argument is structured is crucial to the overall effect of her article.
She begins with a statement describing how some feel uncertain about climate change and more
specifically the disagreement about anthropogenic climate change. Subsequently, the author proves
her main claim that humans are affecting climate change with supporting evidence from credible
organizations. She continues to examine her gathered evidence to reinforce her argument as factual,
and not merely opinion based. Towards the end of her article, she generates an emotional tone our
grandchildren will surely blame us if they find that we understood the reality of anthropogenic climate
change and failed to do anything about it , which connects her to the audience (par. 9). This advances
her purpose because she then asks the readers to take action and listen to climate scientists, who have
tried to make anthropogenic climate change clear to the public (par. 10).

the public, discusses the similar issue about climate change in his article, If Scientists Want to Educate
the Public, they Should Start by Listening. He begins by gathering information generated from
scientists and the public to determine why most people refuse to believe scientists on

The Stages Of An Unreflective Thinker
Critical thinking is being able to evaluate an issue or situation to form a judgment. Having the ability
to think clearly and rationally, being able to have an argument and understand the main concept and
question any doubts you have and making your own conclusion. Being a good critical thinker can help
you in a lot of ways professionally and personally. Employers often want to see someone that can
think rationally and that is able to make their business grow and develop they want someone that will
take initiative in crucial situations. In our personal lives, it is important so we learn how to distinguish
the main facts about an argument and learn to analyze the problem and make a conclusion of what
needs to be done to help solve and prevent any future problems. According to Linda Elder and Richard
Paul, there are six stages of a critical thinker the unreflective thinker, the challenged thinker, the
beginning thinker, the advanced thinker, and finally the accomplished thinker which is where we
would all want to be in. (The Critical Thinking Community , 2010) Stage one the unreflective thinker
is simply someone that is unaware of what role thinking is playing in their lives. I think we are all
born as an unreflective thinker and some people don t know the useful conception of what thinking
really is and they don t develop better thinking skills and end up dying the same way. Being an
unreflective thinker means that you know you have a problem but don t take the time or don t

How Is Imagery Used In 1984
1984, a dystopian novel, by George Orwell, an english novelist and journalist, describes the lives of
people under the control of the Inner Party. In this specific scene, Winston, the protagonist of the
novel, had just gotten captured after the Thought Police had found out that he was having thoughts of
being against the inner party. They had just separated him and Julia, Winston s love interest. The
author uses imageries, similes, and metaphors to create a concerned and melancholic tone throughout
Winston s suffering. The author uses a vast amount of examples of imagery to create and show his
concerned tone, starting from how Winston woke up in a camp bed, fixed down so that he could not
move. He continues to describe the events that would take place in that room and the actions that
would be done to him. Orwell explains that sometimes it was fists, sometimes it was truncheons,
sometimes it was steel rods, sometimes it was boots (263). This displays how they didn t care about
what they used, they entirely wanted to conflict as much pain as possible on him, no matter what it
took. The more that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Winston was not only compared to a sack of potatoes, but was also said to be as shameless as an
animal (263). This was due to his behavior after being punished so much that he would roll around the
floor agonizing in pain. All of those torturing tactics caused him to confess to real and imaginary
crimes. This results in readers feeling extremely sorry for the proceedings that were occurring. Orwell
explains, He became simply a mouth that uttered, a hand that signed whatever was demanded of him
(265). This was referring to how Winston had taken too much damage and was capable of agreeing or
doing anything that the thought police told him to do. He wanted to make them stop completely, it was
horrific how he would confess to anything in order to make them stop hurting

Leadership Of The Coast Guard
1. Leadership in the Coast Guard is the process of guiding and inspiring others toward closer
adherence to the core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Leadership is a set of behaviors
rather than just a set of ideals. Ideals are good, but ideals without the corresponding behaviors are
useless. The best way to guide others is to show by example; a true leader not only speaks out in favor
of the core values, but also exhibits them in their daily life.
2. Although leadership traits can be studied from textbooks, the best way to adopt good leadership
traits is to follow an example of positive leadership. In my career, I ve been very fortunate to have had
numerous positive role models on which to model by own behavior after. ... Show more content on

Fortunately, another member (also just a non rate fireman, also new to the unit), finally stepped
forward and challenged the behavior of several more senior members. Although the situation got tense
for a few moments, the end result was that the lack of respect towards our struggling shipmate ended.
The courage of Fireman Neil C. had a profound impact on me. Not only did it put an end to the
disrespectful behavior towards a shipmate, but now, 24 years later, it still has an impact on me, as it
provides me an example of how I should behave.
b. Later, at this same duty station, as a new EM3, I was anxious to prove myself as a competent
electrician. However, during my first month on the job, when installing a replacement pump motor, I
carelessly wired it incorrectly, which resulted in the windings of the brand new, extremely expensive
motor burning out approximately five minutes after I installed it. I was horrified by this turn of events.
I immediately realized my wiring mistake, but unfortunately I realized it about five minutes too late. I
would have given anything to be able to turn back time by those five minutes so I could correct my
error. I was scared to death. I didn t know how to tell my supervisor. Our engineering warrant was
extremely demanding, and had just finished yelling at one of the MKs for accidently dropping a
wrench into the bilge. I didn t know what

Counseling The Hood Case Study
Counseling the Hoods with Structural Family Therapy
The Hood family consists of Ben, Elena, and their children, Paul (16 years old) and Wendy (14 years
old), that lives in New Canaan, Connecticut. Paul attends a prep school in another city while Wendy
attends school in New Canaan. The family lacks structure and communication. Neither parents know
what the children are up to, as shown when Wendy asked for money to pay for her band uniform (Lee,
Ice Storm ). Each member of the family is struggling to find happiness. This is demonstrated when
Paul does not want to come on the day before Thanksgiving to spent time with his family, he rather
travel on Thanksgiving Day. Mr. Hood had to convince Paul to come home a day early by saying:

He does drugs occasionally with his roommate. He also has a crush on Libbets. Wendy Hood is a
teenager that is curious about her sexuality. She has been playing sex games with her classmates,
especially Mickey Carver. She also steals from the local pharmacy. They both know that their parents
are having problems with their marriage (Lee, Ice Storm ).
I would use structural family therapy to counsel the Hood family. This therapeutic approach is best for
the Hood family because it will organize the ways in which each family member react with one
another. The Hoods boundaries are enmeshed. Mr. Hood is very disengaged with Mrs. Hood, their
relationship is estranged. Mrs. Hood is dependent on Mr. Hood for happiness, however Mr. Hood is no
longer happy thus he is seeking also. They need to develop mutual support for one another.
Mr. Hood gives the children more attention than his wife, which cause the power of the family
hierarchy to be dysfunction. To correct the family s dysfunction, the power has to be given back to the
parents. They must develop boundaries that separates them from the children. They must also improve
their communication skills with one

The Ottoman Empire ( 1299 ) Essay
Empire, Ottoman The Ottoman Empire (1299?1923) was a Turkish Muslim state that existed for more
than six hundred years. It was one of the largest and longest lived empires in history, and it
represented one of the greatest civilizations of the modern period. Its territories, at its height, included
Anatolia (part of present day Turkey), the Middle East, parts of East and North Africa, and
southeastern Europe, comprising a total area of more than 22 million square kilometers (about 8.5
million square miles). The Ottoman state was established by a tribe of Oghuz Turks as one of many
small Turkish principalities that emerged in Anatolia during the Mongolian breakdown of the
Anatolian Seljuk State. The state was ruled by the Ottoman dynasty of the Kayi tribe. The dynasty was
founded by Osman I (ca. 1258?1324; in English, Ottoman) in S?g??t, in the Marmara region of
modern Turkey. THE PERIOD OF ESTABLISHMENT AND EXPANSION Situated on the borders of
the tottering Byzantine Empire, Osman I quickly became a warrior of Islam, attracting the attention of
wandering ghazis, or warriors for the faith, in Anatolia. In 1299 the Byzantine city Bilecik fell to
Turks. This conquest was followed by the fall of many other Byzantine cities, villages, and forts
during the early 1300s. Some of the nearby Turkish beyliks (principalities) and tribes were also taken
over before Osman s death around 1324. Osman s son Orhan (r. 1326?1362) conquered Bursa in 1326.
Bursa became the first Ottoman

The Reinvention Of Retail Through Iot The Reinvention of Retail through IoT By Noopur Sane, Vishranth Chandrashekar and Aditya Lahoti The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used to describe the growing number of smart and connected products. Let us take a look at some of the industry use cases of application of IoT in retail: Disney has RFID enabled MagicBand wristbands that provide theme park access, entry access for guest hotel rooms, and cash and card free payment food and merchandise. All the activity in the park is also tracked data that helps build a better picture of how guests use Disney services. The process of constructing the robot was one that was a group effort, for there were many small pieces and components that had to be fitted together in a very specific way. It was a learning experience for all of us, because none of us had ever used Legos to build something that complicated nor followed such detailed instructions that were presented as images with very few words. So not only did we get feedback from one another on how to construct the robot, but we also put our heads together to figure out errors we made in the programming. Michael Pollan, a professor from the University of California, Berkeley, has written a book that includes a section on something that he called the American Paradox. Emerging his ideas from the French paradox, he has developed a concept in which he believed to be true of the Americans diets. From his viewpoint, the relationships between the way Americans eat and balance their nutrition and health is an inverse correlation. Pollan states that the relationship between the nutrition of the Americans and their health and satisfaction are contrary, in which that when one factor goes up, the other goes down. We ve been told in the earlier years by nutritionists that some food are more healthy than others, but only to be overturned by later studies. Pollan feels that this orthodoxy is very contradicting as Americans have been assured about how having a low diet helps prevent health issues, but only to be revealed by even more professionals that these foods actually have harmful effects on health, Sooner or later, everything solid we ve been told about the links between our diet and our health seems to get blown away in the gust of the most recent study (Pollan). They have been told that these foods are of no harm, yet to only acquire health issues such as obesity later in their lives. For instance, my friends tried to only eat foods that affirm a low diet, however, it has barely done anything to their health and weight. Another way of defining poverty is not having the sufficient needs to survive properly in this world and economy. The social problem of poverty is a severely entrenched abrasion that diffuses every aspect of culture and society. Poverty is socially structured by status. The main social component that deals with poverty is social class. There are three levels of social class: lower, middle, and upper; all of which are often categorized by a certain amount of money determined by the poverty line. • 8. Biography Of Baruch Spinoza s Theory Of Human Emotions,... At the age of 20, Baruch Spinoza was banned from the Synagog, and from Amsterdam for his radical believes. His masterpiece, The Ethics, can basically be considered as his guide for humans to achieve absolute tranquility. His purpose is psychotherapy. It is his directory to living the right way and being happy and content. He believes that in order to do so, one must truly understand the nature of two major phenomenas. He, by breaking his book into five different parts, explains the true and absolute nature of God or Nature, and the human nature. And thus, by truly studying the metaphysics of things, one can use his therapy of the soul, which plays off of his theory of human emotions, in order to be able to operate on the contents of his/her mind, and the emotions one produces. In such a way, humans can finally find virtue and salvation. The first step of the path to salvation, according to Spinoza, consists of humans changing the way they understand God. To the author, God means something completely different than what humans naturally believe. To Spinoza, God is Nature. God is everything. God is the one and only substance, and everything else is merely an attribute or a modification of that substance. As Spinoza says: God, or substance, consisting of infinite attributes, of which each expresses eternal and infinite essentiality, necessarily exists . God is the ultimate reality outside of which nothing can be or be conceived. As reported by Baruch: God s existence, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the world s richest woman makes an undeniable offer, it becomes clear that the town s economy will be saved, but only at an unthinkable cost. As the play unfolds, the rise and fall of the town and each of its citizens becomes evident. DĂŒrrenmatt, a 20th century Swiss playwright, is well known for the thorough development of characters in his works; in his tragicomedy, The Visit, he employs the use of character development to illustrate the rise and fall of his two main characters, Alfred Ill and Claire Zachanassian, as they progress from adolescence to adulthood. In their adolescence, both Ill and Claire are presumably happy, as they are head over heels in love with each other. The two are practically inseparable, constantly running off to the woods or Peterson s Barn. Unfortunately, this all takes a drastic turn when Claire becomes pregnant and charges Ill with a paternity suit. As an adolescent, not only is Claire charitable , but she also loves justice, which is why she considers it a complete betrayal when Ill denies that the baby is his (DĂŒrrenmatt 6). • 20. What Is The Traditional Representation Of Women In... Resident Evil: Retribution is a 2012 science fiction, action and horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. It is based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil. 10This film conveys women are like that of a stereotype of men heroic and dominant. There are a number of countless fight scenes, which suggest the control and supremacy of females. In the corridor fight, Alice uses a long chain to safeguard herself and achieves victory in the fight. A high angle shot has been used to allow the audience to see the character and the surroundings. It shows her facial expressions and as audience she is serious and isn t afraid of anything. The medium close up shot has been used to show her power and dominance. As well ... However, this was because the movie was made in the late 1970 s. Therefore, traditional stereotypes have been used. Moreover, the movie Resident Evil Retribution was made in 2012 so the changes in society have reflected in the plot of the film showing women can be of dominance. For example, Alice shows her characteristic as strong (although this was rare). It was highly recognised for subverting the stereotype which had appealed to a high number of audiences as stated earlier. Above all, the females are represented as sex objects in Halloween. Most people think that it is something virtuous and some people think it as immoral. However, I believe female representation as sex objects is wrong as it portrays them as weak and they should not be perceived rather they should be equal to men. Nonetheless, being depicted as a sex object should be up to the films whether they are happy as being labeled as that. Both films are indicating diverse representation of horror films. The film Halloween uses traditional stereotype because it was set in early 1978. Therefore, it was different to what we expect in the movie Resident Evil Retribution as it was set in 2012. In that year, the French people rallied and motivated by the watchwords of Liberty, fraternity and Equality decided to begin the process that would radically change the political and social order of France. This revolution appealed to the Grand Blancs of San Domingue as the colony was named before the revolution. They secretly hide on bedding, clothing, boxes, luggage, and furniture. But if you really want to sleep like a baby at night and not undergo another bed bug war, here are some tips to keep the little bloodsuckers out of your bed and hopefully out of your house too. 1. Make Sure that Your Bed Frame Has Feet One of the most important things that you need to do is to ensure that your bed has feet. If it currently doesn t have feet, you can always go to a nearby home store and purchase an affordable and simple bed frame. Believe it or not, your bed frame will serve an important part in bedbug proofing your bed. 2. Put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the purpose why having a bed frame is suggested. The bed bugs may attempt to get inside the bed bug coasters but will end up being trapped inside. Once the bedbugs are inside, they can no longer climb up the bed frame. Choose the bed bug coasters that contain compartments because you can track where bed bugs are coming from or how they go up from the ground and hide under the sheets. 3. If Possible, Move Your Bed Away from Walls or Furniture This tip is not always possible for every homeowner as some are living in a small space. So, depending on the size of your room, you can opt to position your bed away from the wall or the furniture. If you can also put it away from anything that touches the bed, it would be much better. The reason is simple: these walls or furniture linked to the bed is giving bed bugs a way to cross and reach your bed while you are sleeping, which of course spells nightmares. You can keep the bed at least one foot away. Also, bed bugs are not really capable of jumping from the wall to your bed. So, even if the gap is just one inch, it would also be okay as long as your bed covers do not also touch the furniture or wall around the bed. 4. Don t Let the Bed Cover Touch the Floor or ... • 28. The Textual Relationship Between Virgil And Lucretius A number of research has shown the textual relationship between Virgil and Lucretius. Many have noticed the unique use of gliscit by Virgil in 12.9 to describe Turnus reaction to seeing the Latins retreat and have subsequently connected it to Lucretius, specifically passage 1.474: ignis Alexandri Phrygio sub pectore gliscens clara accendisset saevi certamina belli . Although Virgil could have had this passage in mind, there is another use in Lucretius which can bring new context and understanding to Virgil s use of gliscit. Scholars before have noted the relationship between Aen. 12.9 and DRN 4.1069; however, it has not been analyzed why Virgil might be invoking this specific passage. This paper proposes that Virgil uses gliscit to describe Turnus violent state in order to echo Lucretius use at the end of Book 4 when he is describing the state of man under the duress of Venus . This reference both reveals further aspects of Turnus character with subtlety and brevity and moreover, as some scholars believe that Aeneas anger at the end of Book 12 mirrors Juno s anger in the beginning of Book 1, in a similar fashion Turnus behavior in the end mimics the characteristics of the opposing goddess, Venus. I will begin this study by examining the origin and meaning of gliscere. Social Institutions And Its Impact On Society For sake of discussion, I used the words most influential only in a positive and/or inspiring sense, meaning society would benefit most from these social institutions. Conversely, I could have argued that the least influential social institutions are good and/or beneficial to our society, but our society chooses to ignore them; and the most influential social institution plague our society. However, I chose the former the positive and/or inspiring sense of the words. Social institutions are the organized, usual, or standard ways that a society meets its basic needs (P. 104). Moreover, functionalists identify five functional requisites that each society must meet to insure their survival (Pp. 104 106). With this in mind, Family and the Economy are the most influential social institutions in industrial society. Henslin stated in Chapter 3 that Our experiences in the family and other groups during childhood lay down the basic orientations to life (p. 94). Families offer guidance as well as protection from the larger, and sometimes hurtful, society. Furthermore, loving families provide socialization, identity, and comfort, all of which have an essential role in the development of the self (Pp. 104 106). Marxist Feminism And The Marxist Analysis Of Television Show Marxist Analysis of Television shows In our society, there are many forms of mediated texts ranging from newspapers and magazines to films and television shows. Each of these media forms can be seen from different theoretical perspectives and analyzed to understand the different concepts that may influence them. Television shows are one of the most popular media texts with approximately 400 new shows airing each year (Ryan, 2016). However, it is often very unlikely for these television shows to strive as 65% are cancelled after their first season (Ocasio, 2012). This then, brings Marxist scholars into the picture as they are interested in how economic factors affect the production and distribution of media content (Mack Ott, 2016). The Marxist theoretical perspective allows Marxist scholars to study television shows in order to understand why they were cancelled and how certain roles in the media lead to this. Marxism is a perspective that was first introduced in the mid 1800 s by Karl Marx and is still applied to situations today. Marxism believes that the mode of production in society determines the social relations of productions (Mack Ott, 2016). It is considered to be a materialistic philosophy as it has a strong focus on the material world and how it plays a part in human thought. By utilizing these various sources as evidence it strengthens her argument about the scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change. In this case, Oreskes audience consists of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The content in which the author s argument is structured is crucial to the overall effect of her article. She begins with a statement describing how some feel uncertain about climate change and more specifically the disagreement about anthropogenic climate change. Subsequently, the author proves her main claim that humans are affecting climate change with supporting evidence from credible organizations. She continues to examine her gathered evidence to reinforce her argument as factual, and not merely opinion based. Towards the end of her article, she generates an emotional tone our grandchildren will surely blame us if they find that we understood the reality of anthropogenic climate change and failed to do anything about it , which connects her to the audience (par. 9). This advances her purpose because she then asks the readers to take action and listen to climate scientists, who have tried to make anthropogenic climate change clear to the public (par. 10). Likewise, Chris Mooney, a journalist and author who evaluated the relationship between scientists and the public, discusses the similar issue about climate change in his article, If Scientists Want to Educate the Public, they Should Start by Listening. He begins by gathering information generated from scientists and the public to determine why most people refuse to believe scientists on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. How Is Imagery Used In 1984 1984, a dystopian novel, by George Orwell, an english novelist and journalist, describes the lives of people under the control of the Inner Party. In this specific scene, Winston, the protagonist of the novel, had just gotten captured after the Thought Police had found out that he was having thoughts of being against the inner party. They had just separated him and Julia, Winston s love interest. The author uses imageries, similes, and metaphors to create a concerned and melancholic tone throughout Winston s suffering. The author uses a vast amount of examples of imagery to create and show his concerned tone, starting from how Winston woke up in a camp bed, fixed down so that he could not move. He continues to describe the events that would take place in that room and the actions that would be done to him. Orwell explains that sometimes it was fists, sometimes it was truncheons, sometimes it was steel rods, sometimes it was boots (263). This displays how they didn t care about what they used, they entirely wanted to conflict as much pain as possible on him, no matter what it took. The more that he ... This was due to his behavior after being punished so much that he would roll around the floor agonizing in pain. All of those torturing tactics caused him to confess to real and imaginary crimes. This results in readers feeling extremely sorry for the proceedings that were occurring. Orwell explains, He became simply a mouth that uttered, a hand that signed whatever was demanded of him (265). This was referring to how Winston had taken too much damage and was capable of agreeing or doing anything that the thought police told him to do. • 43. Leadership Of The Coast Guard 1. Leadership in the Coast Guard is the process of guiding and inspiring others toward closer adherence to the core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Leadership is a set of behaviors rather than just a set of ideals. Ideals are good, but ideals without the corresponding behaviors are useless. The best way to guide others is to show by example; a true leader not only speaks out in favor of the core values, but also exhibits them in their daily life. 2. Although leadership traits can be studied from textbooks, the best way to adopt good leadership traits is to follow an example of positive leadership. Fortunately, another member (also just a non rate fireman, also new to the unit), finally stepped forward and challenged the behavior of several more senior members. Although the situation got tense for a few moments, the end result was that the lack of respect towards our struggling shipmate ended. The courage of Fireman Neil C. had a profound impact on me. Not only did it put an end to the disrespectful behavior towards a shipmate, but now, 24 years later, it still has an impact on me, as it provides me an example of how I should behave. b. Later, at this same duty station, as a new EM3, I was anxious to prove myself as a competent electrician. However, during my first month on the job, when installing a replacement pump motor, I carelessly wired it incorrectly, which resulted in the windings of the brand new, extremely expensive motor burning out approximately five minutes after I installed it. I was horrified by this turn of events. I immediately realized my wiring mistake, but unfortunately I realized it about five minutes too late. I would have given anything to be able to turn back time by those five minutes so I could correct my error. I was scared to death. I didn t know how to tell my supervisor. • 45. The Ottoman Empire ( 1299 ) Essay Empire, Ottoman The Ottoman Empire (1299?1923) was a Turkish Muslim state that existed for more than six hundred years. It was one of the largest and longest lived empires in history, and it represented one of the greatest civilizations of the modern period. Its territories, at its height, included Anatolia (part of present day Turkey), the Middle East, parts of East and North Africa, and southeastern Europe, comprising a total area of more than 22 million square kilometers (about 8.5 million square miles). The Ottoman state was established by a tribe of Oghuz Turks as one of many small Turkish principalities that emerged in Anatolia during the Mongolian breakdown of the Anatolian Seljuk State. The state was ruled by the Ottoman dynasty of the Kayi tribe. The dynasty was founded by Osman I (ca. 1258?1324; in English, Ottoman) in S?g??t, in the Marmara region of modern Turkey. Some of the nearby Turkish beyliks (principalities) and tribes were also taken over before Osman s death around 1324. Osman s son Orhan (r. 1326?1362) conquered Bursa in 1326.
