The World Is A Dangerous Place
In the words of Albert Einstein The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people
who are evil, but because of the people who don t do anything about it. The importance of these
words and the desire to pursue my Master degree in Science in Global Studies and International
Relations came to me as an epiphany, while roaming the streets of Brazil. After a decade of
working as a nuclear engineer, at one of the world s leading nuclear instrumentation companies, I
have encountered numerous issues such as nuclear waste disposable, non proliferation, and energy
independence. It is through these efforts that, I have come to realize that the greatest impediment to
solving these problems is often the labyrinth of political hurdles and deciphering the technical
implications of government standards. As an engineer, my world has been framed by logical
assessments and conclusions. I was brought up and taught to think critically, analyze, and solve
problems. I have been living in a microsphere of the nuclear industry and have come to the
realization that the true solution to a problem often lies not only in science but in diplomacy. For
example, a university in Egypt wanted to buy a monitor. The monitor they wanted to purchase did
not contain any nuclear material (but did allow for workers to check if they are contaminated with
nuclear material). This simple request became a rather interesting situation not only because my
company is 96% owned by the government of France,

An Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Of The D Urbervilles
Thomas Hardy, a Victorian era poet, and novelist who was influenced by Romanticism, mostly
known for his novels. Hardy was a naturalist, and we can see his realistic outlook on life proved
in his novels such as Tess of the D Urbervilles. The novel first published in 1892, and was met
with a great deal of controversy because of the subject matter. Hardy took issue the sexual
morals of late Victorian England and religious skepticism. And it was enough to shock readers
and get mixed reviews from critics. In Tess of the D Urbervilles, we get an idea in Hardy s sight
about religion, he uses his characters to make observations that can be quite discouraging his
Victorian readers. The novel tells the story of young, rural and innocent girl Tess, who discovers
that she is from noble and ancient family. And her whole life changes to too bad after it. More
precisely, when she meets with her new relative Alec and had been seduced by him. She loses
her purity and give birth of a baby out of marriage, which was unacceptable for the unmarried
women. She knows that after that nothing can be as before. However, she meets with another
man, but it was too late. And none of them can be happy. Some people could think that the
incidents that occur around the Tess and lead to the death of Alec D. and her own imprisonment
and death are the result of her own deeds, pay for sins, but speaking for myself and I assume also
for Hardy it is not quite so. I

Have you ever wondered who invented the modern computers...
Have you ever wondered who invented the modern computers we use today? Now, you would
probably say Microsoft or Apple; however the truth is modern computers were invented by Alan
Turing. He invented the Turing Machine, which is a computer that could process anything. In other
words he created the first programing language. Not only did he contribute to computerscience, but
also in biology, chemistry, physics, and especially mathematics. He has countless number of
achievements including his contribution of cracking the Nazi enigma code, which seemed at that
time, unbreakable . Now lets dive into the life of Alan.

Comparing Vampire And The Vampire Diaries
Vampires are very present in today s society. Many novels and shows, like Twilight and The
Vampire Diaries, show that vampires are still integral to our culture. However, the birth of such a
cultural phenomenon would not have happened without Dracula. Without Bram Stoker s novel,
there would be no stereotypical vampires that capture the culture s conscious. Aside from telling a
story on vampires, Draculaalso explores ideals about the women of the time in which it was written,
which is the Victorian Era. Throughout the Victorian period, one of the predominant concerns was
the role of women and the place they fill in their society. Draculais one of many Victorian novels
that explore the varying roles women filled. Two of the characters... Show more content on

In one correspondence between her friend and Mina, Lucy discusses what it means to be a
woman by calling it a cult. This cult reflects the expectation of women to serve as domestic
homemakers and not venture outside the idea of marriage. The identity of women is something
that is not meant to be seen as an individual but in terms of their utility to the sustenance of man.
This point can be proven by not only some of Lucy s thoughts in the text but in many of her
descriptions by other characters in the text as well. This lack of individuality in support of
patriarchy is reflected in everything that Lucy does. The order of her day, where she will live,
and even the smallest details of how she will speak. There is one instance in a conversation with
her friend Mina that Lucy notes how she will only speak in a manner that her husband will like.
Women in this age where expected to be this way, always dutiful and deferential to men, whether it
be their husbands, fathers or brothers. This inferiority to men is important to note because it helps
play into Stoker s (among other Victorian writers and Victorian people s views in general) character
development of the women. In Dracula, Stoker illustrates some women as overtly sexual beings and
other women as pure, chaste creatures. These depictions are represented through the different
female characters. The characterization of the women who show the varying representations are
reflections of the ideal

Essay on Pool Scenes in The Graduate
Pool Scenes in The Graduate
At first glance it may seem that the swimming pool in Ben?s backyard is no more than an
insignificant setting choice for the movie. After close examination, however, the pool fills a critical
role as the symbol of the recent college graduate?s internal struggle with decisions regarding his
future. Key scenes involving the swimming pool and the related aquarium in Ben?s room chronicle
the evolution of his transition from adolescents into adulthood.
The opening scene of the movie in which Ben?s face is visible through the glass of his aquarium
tank demonstrates his role as an adolescent upon arriving home from college. This is, however,
only recognizable in a later scene taking place at the party his ... Show more content on

Robinson?a friend of his parents. This woman, the same age as his mother, becomes the catalyst
for Ben?s eventual transition into adulthood. The first evidence of this is after Mrs. Robinson
requests a ride home from Ben; she tosses her car keys to him but instead of landing in Ben?s
hands, the keys fall into his fish aquarium. The emphasis of this action in the movie by a zoom in
and pause on the tank demonstrates its importance as Ben?s childhood life, signified by the
aquarium, has just been contaminated. The encounter foreshadows the loss of innocence that Ben
experiences with his sexual relationship with Mrs. Robinson after she seduces him. At first,
however, Ben does not give into her advances rejecting the idea of adult behaviors like an affair
with a married woman.
Resistance to growing up is further evident in his 21st birthday party at his parent?s home. This
age has long had social significance in our culture?with the age comes freedom to drink, the end
of childhood, and most significantly for Ben, the official and very public entrance into the adult
world. After receiving a wet suit and scuba gear for his birthday, Ben?s parents ask him to take a
swim in the pool to show off his new gift in front of the party guests. Objecting heavily, his father
coerces him until he makes the walk from the house and enters the pool in his gear, obliging the
crowd of his parents? friends. Eager to watch Ben find direction and become

The Pros And Cons Of Discrimination
Discrimination is a topic not many people talk about. One of the many disgusting things somebody
can do is discriminate. Discrimination can be done in many forms; gender, age, race, beliefs,
disabilities, religion, decisions, sexual preference and who they are as an individual. One of the
main people who gets discriminated is people with disabilities, international students, and
homosexuals.
Discrimination in our communities take many forms, but it is solely based on people s race, gender,
religion, weight, nationality, handicap, sexual preference and even height (The End). People
discriminate in schools, they judge people by the way they look. Patients in hospitals will not let
doctors to treat them usually because of the color. In some neighborhoods, landlords will not rent
people a house because of their nationality. Model agencies do not hire models that do not meet
their standards. Hollywood will not make an asian actor or actress the main character of a movie
/show. People discriminate for different reasons. Some can not accept other people that are not like
them. Many individuals are raised to think a certain way, leaving them to be closed minded.
Another reason people discriminate is when others are not in the same level as them, or when they
do not share the same beliefs. Insensitive people do not care about people s feelings and will not try
to understand. Understanding is an important step to not discriminate.
Discrimination in schools is nothing new to

Ocean At The Lane
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a fictional memoir written by Neil Gaiman. The story took
place in contemporary England. The protagonist, also the narrator, was a 7 year old boy who
later became friends with Lettie Hempstock. She was an older girl living at the end of the lane.
The narrator and Lettie Hempstock experienced a series of fascinating adventures. The antagonist,
Ursula Monkton, appeared to be a friendly and good looking nanny, actually tried to control the
world. She was revealed as a monster towards the end of the book. During the confrontation with
Ursula, the narrator saw enormous amounts of things that he had never seen before, and gained
courage by stepping up to dangers. However, Lettie was severely injured in a fight... Show more

had the rest of the incomplete way back. Later, he was caught and brought high in the air by
Ursula which frightened him so much that he screamed, shouted for help and tried to kick her
with his legs. While Ursula was ripped to shreds by alien vulture monsters, she was right in front
of him. In the following attack from the cleaners , Lettie left him alone in a green circle, and he
said that I have never been as frightened as I was. All of these horrible memories would shadow
him forever for its strong impact on him as a child. Thus his encounter with Ursula Monkton
would never truly come to an end, never reach a psychological closure. Lettie was killed by the
vultures and slept in the ocean forever. The protagonists memories faded away over time, but as
soon as he visited the Hempstock house, he recalled them all. These memories have been
astonishing and unique to him because of the catastrophic nature of them, and they have changed
him as a person.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane was a story about fear and courage. The narrator was greatly
influenced by Lettie and their friendship, the journeys he went on with her, and his fight with
Ursula Monkton. He changed from an innocent child to a mature adult at the age of 7, because he
confronted death, he was challenged by the horrifying Ursula and he made a true friend named
Lettie. These factors also shaped his characters to be more social and courageous. Memories
would never be forgotten by him because the experience has been a dramatic change of ways he

Analysis Of Covers The Ground By Gary Snyder
Title
To people foreign to California, the state is boxed into a set of stereotypical characteristics. The
Golden State has received labels such as surf nation, and liberal land. But to those who ve gotten a
chance to live within this great state appreciate the opportunities and ambitions that come with
living in California. Furthermore, what truly differentiates California from any other place in the
world is the consistent paradoxical environment. This notion is best epitomized by the city of
Sacramento and the cultural, economic and social change that the city has undergone. Gary Snyder
communicates this theme through building around John Muir s ideologies in his work of Covers
The Ground. Snyder s work exemplifies the contradiction between nature and innovation. It
presents the paradoxical state individuals around the world face on whether to accept the
innovation and accept the benefits that come with it, or stay true to the roots of nature and the
history that accompanies it. This dilemma boils down to whether we as a race embrace the
progression of time and the paradoxes that follow, or we find solace in our current state.
The inception of Covers The Ground, begins with establishing the setting of the city of
Sacramento. Understanding the natural beauty of the city is best conveyed by establish vivid
imagery and Snyder accomplishes this by describing the blossoming almond orchard acres. As the
image of nature sparks into the reader s head, Gary Snyder is

Miranda V Arizona
Miranda v. Arizona: Half a Century Later by: September 2nd, 2014 I. INTRODUCTION A.
Executive Summary In 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court deliberated the case Miranda v. Arizona the
most important aspect of due process and criminal procedure ever affecting law enforcement and
prosecutorial conduct of an investigation. The main issues in this case were: * The admissibility of
a defendant s statements if such statements were made while the defendant was held in police
custody or deprived of freedom of movement in a significant way; * What procedures were required
to guarantee the defendant s privilege against self incrimination according to the Fifth Amendment
of the U.S. Constitution? This case is considered the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1965, the U.S. Supreme Court was seeking one or more cases similar to Escobedo v. Illinois
to clarify their position, as its opinion in that case raised many issues regarding the safeguards
and extent of such decision. Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote the majority s opinion and Justices
Clark, Stewart, White, and Harlan presented three separate opinions. In the Court s opinion of
this case, it discussed the legal basis for their decision, emphasizing the need for changes away
from the traditional rules of custodial interrogation. This landmark case in criminal procedure
was marked by great public criticism for the liberal stance shown by the U.S. Supreme Court. It
ensures defendant s rights to what many people regarded as opening the door to convicted
criminals to escape punishment through technicalities . III. PROFESSIONAL OPINION In
Miranda v. Arizona the prosecution focused on the defendant s history with law enforcement to
support their claim that Miranda s confession was offered knowingly. At the time, Escobedo was
the only similar case regarding defendant s rights and was specific about the right to counsel.
Meanwhile in Miranda s case, his main failing was being unaware of the consequences of
confessing to a crime while under pressure or coercion of the police. The decade of 1960 has been
known for its great civil unrest in the United States. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties

Symbolism Lord Of The Flies
William Golding s Lord of the Flies has many significant symbols that represent the emotions and
thoughts of the castaways in the novel. The meaning of the symbols change along with how the
characters think and act, starting as something innocent and turning dark and sinister. Three
important symbols within the novel are: the conch shell, the signal fire and the beast. The meaning
of these symbolsare significantly impacted by the growth of savagery and loss of civilization on
the island, and the change in symbolism allows the reader to better understand the changes among
the boys throughout the novel. Near the beginning of the novel, readers are introduced to the conch
shell. The shell was found accidentally, but was seen as very valuable from the start. Most
obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that...was set apart
(chapter 1, page 21). It was used to congregate the castaways to meetings and designate who could
speak; in short, the conch represented order, civility, and authority among the characters. As the
novel progresses, this symbolof civilization loses its power. A majority of the castaways embrace
savagery and turn away from order, there are a few characters however, who remain faithful to the
conch and its meaning. The meaning changes from just a sign of order to a reminder of
civilization and a way for characters to hold on to reality. For example, Ralph, after admitting that
he had joined in the

The Pros And Cons Of Majority Rule
Ever since the advent of democratic systems of political decision making in Ancient Greece, one
of the primary concerns about democratic functioning has been the principle of majority rule.
Whether a majoritarian system is divisive in its essence, paves the way for demagoguery, or
obstructs minority groups from having a fair say in public affairs, criticisms of majority rule have
and still persist nowadays. Indeed, notorious political figures such as Hamilton, Madison or Mill
expressed concerns about the potential threat of a tyranny of the majoritywhich would infringe on
citizens fundamental rights. Moreover and recently, the outcome of the Brexit referendum has
renewed the debate around majority rule and its flaws. However, within the context of the
contemporary world in which democracyprevails, majority rule is the norm many states follow.
Why is this so; how can majority rule be defended and what are its limits? In order to provide an
articulate and coherent answer, it is first necessary to lay down some premises to the functioning of
the democratic process. Then, after arguing for majority rule, its flaws shall be assessed before
eventually drawing potential alternatives from such dysfunctions.
First of all, even though majority rule is often associated with democracy and political equality,
the essence of democratic procedure does not require majority rule insofar as all the people have
power over political affairs (Saunders, 2010). It is therefore necessary to

Speech On Lasik Surgery
Good Morning everyone I am in front of you to discuss my topic which is in titled Lasik Surgery
but before that I have a quote here which fit on my topic, We have hearing aids in order to fix our
ear. We have lasik surgery in order to fix our eyes, People... you can t fix stupid! by Ron White . So
let me start, what comes into your mind when you hear the word lasik? So basically lasik means
an eye correct vision which needs a laserto reshape the inner cornea. There are three types of eye
conditions, the nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatism. So first let us know the nearsighted or
(myopia), basically means that people who are nearsighted they can t clearly see a text or a thing
that is too far from them and they need to move closer in that certain area, nearsighted people
usually experiencing blur vision when they are far well they can read it but then the text itself
will turn into a blur one. It can be a common cause of having a blur vision. So here is a sample
picture of myopia. The second is farsighted or (hyperopia), basically means that people who are
farsighted they are unable to see things clearly they can see it but it needs to have a good distance

Comparsion Of The Correlation Between Neurons And Perception
Synopsis
Neurons are responsible primarily for their intended sense. However, neurons can sometimes be
bimodal, meaning that they respond to two different senses. Primary sensory areas contain neurons
that respond to only one sense. However, some primary sensory areas have outlier senses, and is
not exclusive. Perception is defined as the brain s interpretation of sensory information. However,
that s not all, since expectations also play a role in how the brain perceives the world. Therefore, it
can be said that perception is a combination of sensory information and expectation. Helmholtz
stated that previous experiences act in conjunction with present sensations to produce a perceptual
image. Expectation dominates perception when there is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are two types of sensory information: ambiguous sensory information, which is when
expectation dominates perception, and clear sensory information, which is when sensory
information dominates perception. When sensory information dominates perception, neurons are
being fired in response to the stimulus. However, when expectation dominates perception, how do
the neurons that are being fired in our brain differ? In this case, since perception is based on our
past experiences, what parts of the brain would there be the highest frequency of neuron activity?
Taking this question one step further, how do the neurons that are being fired in our brain differ
when ambiguous sensory information is present without expectation? What areas of our brain are
most active when this occurs, since we have no expectation and there is also not enough sensory
information present to activate the receptors? This is important to know in order to further
understand the difference between how sensory information and expectation impact human
perception in our daily lives. This would further improve our understanding of how illusions work
and how they impact our

How Does Gwen Harwood Create A Sense Of Belonging
A sense of belonging can be linked to many aspects of life, whether it be to people, places or
cultures, and is often necessary for feeling a sense of happiness through a sense of identity or
importance. The poem In the Park by Gwen Harwood and the short film More by Mark Osborne
both show the positives and the negatives of belonging to people and society as a whole. In the
Park and More show the negatives of belonging and not belonging, the former through a
pessimistic tone and choice of diction, and the latter through repetition and the juxtaposition of
colour. More shows the main character s lack of belonging through the absence of any form of

Analysis Of The Article Gold Kiwifruit Consumed With An...
Introduction
In this paper the article entitled Gold kiwifruit consumed with an iron fortified breakfast cereal
meal improves iron status in women with low iron stores: a 16 week randomised controlled trial
by Beck et al., 2010 will be critically appraised. This article investigates whether women s Fe
status could be improved by consuming a Fe fortified breakfast cereal and milk with gold kiwifruit
(high in ascorbic acid, lutein and zeaxanthin) compared with consuming the same breakfast with
banana (low in ascorbic acid, lutein and zeaxanthin) with low Fe stores, each day for 16 days. Iron
deficiency is a common health problem with symptoms such as fatigue, lack of concentration,
weakness, headache, and increased risk of infection. Women are at greatest risk of developing iron
deficiency due to monthly menstrual blood loss and increased needs during pregnancy. A Fe
fortified breakfast cereal that enhances absorption and improves Fe status is an easy approach to
address iron deficiency and its symptoms in women. A critical evaluation of the study to show its
validity is therefore useful.

Out-Traditional Family
The nuclear family, and its out dated definition given by George Murdock, was once considered the
most natural and unquestioned of all family structures. However, as the definition of family
expands to encompass more than just heterosexual relationships with two children, this
unquestioned model is beginning to look out dated. However, a new trend is emerging that is
allowing the nuclear familyto keep its form while still moving into the new 21st century model of
family. It has now become the norm to have mothers in the workforce, but what about fathers.
Where is their change in pace? In recent years the number of stay at home fathers has been
increasing, and with this modification to the traditional family, comes modification in support,...

Out Of Ignorance In Socratic Philosophy
Socrates argues that all evil is born out of ignorance. According to Socrates, evil or wrongdoing
is the result of ignorance. Socrates assumed that nobody willingly opts to do wrong or evil
things. He says that doing wrong always injured the wrongdoer and that no one seeks to carry
harm upon themselves. The Socratic philosophy reveals that is not normal for an individual to
want to do wrong on the grounds that their perception for self interest keeps them from doing as
such. People do things every day that we may think is good but in all actuality is wrong. We
may do it because we think it may have a positive outcome but deep down we know it s not right.
We may do wrong even though it may harm us. For example, a person that cuts themselves. They
re dealing with some type of pain or issue that becomes unbearable and they re just looking for an
easy way to end that feeling. By cutting themselves they think they were relieved stress while at
the same time causing bodily harm. All they want done is to relieve the stress and rid the bad
feelings they may be having. Nobody... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A lot of people may agree with this because to them only bad people would commit a crime. I
would have to disagree with this statement because not all criminals are evil people. A poor
person that can t afford food for himself or family may be forced to steal food or any necessary
items that may pertain to his survival. This person isn t thinking about the consequences or what
may go wrong if he is caught, all he is worried about is what he can do to feed his family with
limited resources. This doesn t mean he is an evil person, he s just trying to feed himself by any
means necessary and unfortunately for him he got caught. Maybe if her knew the repercussions of
his actions he may have thought twice before committing such a criminal act. There are many
people who are in jail that are not evil but just ignorant to the consequences of their

One of the most popular measures is the balanced scorecard (BSC). The BSC strikes a balance
between financial and nonfinancial measures (Horngren, Sundem, Stratton, 2008, p. 401) and is
used by about 50% of the top 1,000 United States firms. To develop this system, Guillermo needs
to decide what the responsibility centers are and how performance is measured and
acknowledged. He will also need to define the key performance indicators; financials, customers,
internal processes, and employee growth and learning. The primary goal of a control system
such as BSC is to develop the financial and nonfinancial measurements critical to the firm s
growth and profitability. In business, it is all a circle, where employee and customer satisfaction
proves to play large roles in the ultimate success, or lack there of, of a firm. Guillermo, by
implementing a BSC, on a limited scale, will have better control of these factors. Financially, by

What Does The Minister s Black Veil Symbolize
This essay discusses the story The Minister s Black Veil, which was a very different, mysterious,
and unique story that I have ever read before. The story had many symbols and I even learned a
lesson from it. This story makes the readers really think about the story and pay attention and also,
inspires the students to look more deeply into their own souls (Cording 56). In the Minister s Black
Veilit really makes you think about the story and you look for clues that symbolize the veil. You
question yourself and you re so engaged in the story, which is good because I usually get bored
when reading stories that don t include mystery.
As in example, what the black veil symbolized was unspeakable crime... which was
acknowledged by the presence of the veil. (Cording 58). The people were confused when they
saw Mr. Hooper with a black thing on his face. Would it be very strange to see a minister with a
black cloth over their face? The principle effect of the veil is to avert explicit statements of what it
stands for. Creating meaning and simultaneously hiding it.. (Freedman 353) This is what creates a
mystery to the story because Hawthorne doesn t mention the idea of the black veil meaning evil.
You as the reader have to find out what the veil means and you don t find out until almost the end ...

Should Car Manufactures Be Able For Sell Directly With...
Should Manufactures be able to sell directly to consumers. Anthony GreenBay Eng 1150 06
Professor C. Meinhardt November 27, 2016 In this paper, I will be addressing a big topic in the
automotive retail today. This topic is should car manufactures be able to sell directly to
consumers. In this paper I also answer questions like why would a manufacturer want to sell
directly to consumer and the potential causes if they were allowed to sell directly to consumers.
I also state why this topic is important to me. Should Car Manufactures like tesla be able to sell
directly to consumers? Today if you wanted to purchase a new vehicle first you research the type
of vehicle you are looking for whether it was a sports car, minivan, or truck. Then you would go
to your local dealership and look at the vehicle you found and maybe look at all the different
trims models, you might even take the car out on a test drive. Finally, you find that the vehicle
you have been looking at is what you are looking for and decide to purchase it. From there you
would talk to a sales person at about price, monthly pavement interest rates and many other
things. All of this is possible because of a dealership. But should car Manufactures be able skip
the middle man the dealership to sell directly to consumers. Currently in the automotive retail
world this is a trending topic. Elon musk owner of the all electric car company tesla is trying to

Analysis Of Small Steps
Author Style To start off, Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he
writes. There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar
won the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is
written is called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not
do so many things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sacharuses figurative language, conflict
to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character s name in multiple of his books as
his writing style. One style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict
is a struggle between opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just
a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, She
picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream. Kira got
mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing
and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while
everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author s
style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another
example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, Moses whacked him on the side of his
head. X Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the
counterfeit tickets that X Ray has. X Ray s glasses broke, and his tickets were stolen by Moses,
while X Ray lay on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the
books he writes. In addition to conflict, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books,
especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is a language that
uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses
exaggerations or alterations to make a linguistic point. An example of figurative language in Small

Due to the fact that imitations for the product are being developed more rapidly, Ben Jerry have
changed their primary marketing goal to establish products that cannot be imitated, but the
technological developments of the company have not allowed them to launch the products
within a decent time limit. B J s mission statement includes the need for a wide variety of
innovative flavors. Five years to find the perfect coffee bean seems unnecessary. Coffee ice
cream, in this period, may have become undesired by the customer. This scenario is
compounded by, the quick replication by competitors, and the high costs related to
manufacturing each different flavor. As a result, it is key to stop producing brands not received
well, as well as introducing new flavors quickly. Flavor of the month may be a way of bringing
consumers to them on a regular basis. Research will be key in identifying the market in any
region or country B J wishes to operate, especially into consumers needs and wants. The way
choices are made needs to be understood and the positioning of B J needs to accommodate this.
The decision is based, amongst others, by the mood of the potential consumer at the time of
decision. Ben Jerry seem to be proud of the success rate of their relaxed, casual culture and having
employees involved in the decision making. However this policy needs to be reviewed as decisions

Denver Department Stores, a Colorado retail store chain, is an entity that was suffering from the
effects of decreased sales volume. Jim Barton, the supervisor of four departments within the main
location in Denver, was struggling with developing a process to improve the store s sales. Barton
identified with the notion that the decrease in salesvolume was a simple matter of a slowdown in
the economic landscape, and that the downturn would effect all stores in the retail business.
However, Barton s superior, Mr. Cornwall, the general merchandiser of Denver Department Stores,

Mr. Barton can be defined as a Type B person. As noted previously, he views the sales decline as a
result of just one problem: a bad economy. He is correct that certain economic factors contribute in
consumers choosing certain goods over another, but he allows this view to block his ability to work
through a solution that might increase sales.
As suggested earlier, Denver Department Stores has been experiencing declining sales over a
period of a few months, though the actual reason why this is happening is unknown. A general
consensus of the employees is that there have been fewer customers recently, however, management
has placed the blame on the employees for not working hard enough to make a sale. Initially, as
sales began to decline, employees were somewhat social, and appear to have spent more time
speaking with customers. To remedy the issue of falling sales revenue, management has
implemented a tally card system to encourage the employees to work harder at making sales.
With the tally card system, division of labor was lost. Employees of all levels and all departments
were provided the same goal of making sales a priority. This included not only regular employees,
but also department heads. Putting out and straightening up stock items was pushed aside, leaving
the store and backroom looking cluttered, and provided a more cutthroat work environment for
employees. In addition to the poor division of labor, the tally card system

Reactions of Magnesium and Calcium with water.
Research Question:
How much reaction will be occur when you put Magnesium and Calcium with water?
Background Information and Introduction:
Magnesium and Calcium are both placed under group 2 in the periodic table. Group 2 is also
known as Alkaline Earth Metallic elements. All of the metals in group two have an oxidation
number of +2, making them extremely reactive. The metals are not found freely in the nature due
to their reactivity.
When metals react with water (preferably cold), you will end up with metal hydroxide. When the
metal reacts with steam, metal oxide will be formed. Metal oxide is formed due to that the metal
hydroxides decomposes to distribute oxide and water.

One of the solution suggested is the emergence of a leader with new points of view. There are
three types of leaders that appear in Snowpiercer. Guilliam, the leader of the tail section,
suggests the rebels to return to the tail section after they conquer the compartment controlling
the water supply. From this action, he can be regarded as a realist. However, since he turns out
to be one of the antagonists, he can be seen as a symbol of corrupted leader. Another leader is
Curtis, who plans to take over the engine compartment to drive out the dictator. However, his
solution is not ideal since it does not change the basic of the system. Rather, it changes the main

Meat, China, And Communication Revolutions
Meat, China, and Communication Revolutions In Armand Mattelart s book The Invention of
Communication, the word communication is acknowledged as term with a great number of
meanings. However, Mattelart proposes that communication could be specifically understood as

the thesis of this paper, because it alludes to industry being an essential component of

First, let s consider Gustavus Swift and his meat packing company, and how everything from the
invention of the refrigerated rail cart, to becoming one of the first companies to utilize vertical
integration exemplifies communication revolution. As Professor Gary Fields explains in an
essay about communication and G. F. Swift, before the late 19th century, meat was a localized
affair in which few Americans participated. In order for local butchers to get their meat,
shipments of live cattle would come from the midwest. This was incredibly inefficient, as not all
of the cow was edible. The cost of shipping was high, so the butcher would have to charge a pretty
penny for the final cut of meat. Due to both the cost and lack of advertisement of beef, public
interest in meat was low.
In comes Gustavus Franklin Swift, an entrepreneur who realized the potential in meat packing, and
helped fund the invention of the refrigerated rail cart. This technological wonder allowed cattle to
be butchered first, and then have the meat shipped over long distances. This eliminated any
unnecessary waste from being shipped, which meant money was saved and the company could
charge consumers less than local butchers. In 1880, Swift had one cattle supplier, one

In all cases, individual national laws can, and often will, allow additional protection over and

the author plus 70 years. There are also exceptions allowed for countries bound by the Rome Act.
When the term of copyright protection has expired, the work falls into the public domain. This
means that the work, has effectively become public property and may be used freely. This is how so
many companies can publish works by William Shakespeare, classical composers etc.

The infrastructure of Detroit is exceptionally well maintained with relatively minor extra travel

Essay Comparing The Marriage Of Figaro And Twelfth Night
A common discussion between the sexes is the omnipotent power that men seem to hold over
women in all societies. Why do men always have the social advantage over women? Both
Shakespeare s Twelfth Night and Beaumarchais The Marriage of Figaro show that there is indeed
a social stigma placed on women where women are not allowed as much freedom to either fight
back against a suitor or choose not to accept a suitor s love and choose another. Shakespeare s
Twelfth Night focuses mainly on the negative stigmas against women, while Beaumarchais The
Marriage of Figaro places most of the blame for perpetuating the stigmas on the aristocracy,
especially the men within the aristocracy (i.e. the Count). Both texts examine the social role
women play in society, and both texts critique the societal norms that restrict women.

Towards the beginning, Suzanne expresses her dislike of the positioning of her and Figaro s
bedroom. She is afraid that the Count will somehow distract Figaro enough for him to lie with
her. The fact that she even considers this a possibility reveals a great problem: in her position as a
servant of the aristocracy and as a young woman, Suzanne is likely to fall prey to powerful men,
just because they have power over her. The Countess, too, is in a similar position, although she is of
the aristocracy. The Countess is held strictly accountable for the rumors that she was engaging in an
affair, even though the Count himself is attempting to engage in his own affair with Suzanne. The
Count accuses the Countess of unfaithfulness and doesn t even consider that his own attempt at an
affair is an account of his own unfaithfulness. Suzanne also encounters this issue when the Count
uncovers Cherubin, and Cherubin is discovered in her room: You wanted to be alone so you could

heights. On pg 7, Vinny says, He couldn t imagine what it must feel like to be up there, especially
if you were afraid of heights like he was. This line shows that Vinny is scared of heights.

The 5 Perspectives of Psychology The five major perspectives in psychology are the biological,
humanistic existential, cognitive, psychodynamic, and sociocultural perspectives. Each one of
these perspectives looks for answers about behavior through diverse methods and through looking
for answers to different types of questions. The different approaches, each perspective form their
own explanations about behavior. The biological perspective, is the perspective that looks at how

Competing Compromising, Avoiding, And Accommodating
The five conflict styles would include: competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and
accommodating (Griffith Dunham, 2015, p.57). Competing occurs when there are not many
resources. This approach is considered a win lose ; A person may choose this approach on his own
without cooperating with anyone else (J.D., 2011).
Collaborative conflict is when you team up with someone else to achieve each other s goals (J.D.,
2011). By using this conflict you can end up with a win win situation. This conflict requires a lot of
trust among everyone involved (J.D., 2011).
Compromising conflict no one wins from this conflict it is considered a lose lose situation (J.D.,
2011). With compromising conflict no one achieves what they want. Compromising

Organic Food At War
Have you ever been to a market and noticed that the price of the produce is different than your
other market? This is the result of organic food price inflation and the problem goes beyond the
price. During WWII when chemicals were still being produced, scientist discovered a way to
make food more sustainable during the war. This would lead to a realization that the chemical use
in war is also good at accelerating the rate of fruit growing time to sustain during the war. This
would lead to the dwindling of organic farm and the rise of chemical using farms(Organic Food,
Ysanne Spevack). This would lead to an opening for many conventional farms and the dwindling of
organic farms. Which lead to an unhealthy lifestyle.
The public s lack of knowledge about organic, food is making the price go up because of the lack
of buyers. From multiple taste test (genetic literacy project.org, Ben Locwin,2014). Shows that the
public view on guessing the food is mostly on luck. In reality, there is barely a difference in the
fruit taste except in the nutritional benefit. The taste is one of the ... Show more content on

Everybody live differently and eat differently if someone who ate non organic food their entire life
and made a sudden change to organic this would affect them and would sway them to not eat
organic. Another reason is that some of public think organic and non organic are the same due to
the taste and not the nutrient and harmful that are being added. This proves that the public lack
knowledge about organic food is making the market for organic food more expensive. Some might
disagree that there is a negative change when switching to organic food an example is when the
taste change to a more natural flavor. Which is not as good as the conventional food. Even though
the taste is different it is worth it to change an unhealthy lifestyle than to choose an unhealthy but

Perambulatory Clauses Of Executive Order 20
Executive Order No. 20 s Content
In the preamble of Executive Order No. 20, Governor Haslam asserts that establishing,
communicating, complying with, and enforcing a comprehensive ethics policy within the
Executive Branch... essential to maintaining public trust in government and ensuring the proper
performance of government. After the perambulatory clauses, Executive Order 20 adheres very
closely to the basic format previously suggested that most state government follow. The first
operative clause clarifies that the ethics policy applies to all Executive Branch employees over
43,000 people unless otherwise noted. The second clause discusses potential conflict of interests to
avoid: using public office for personal gain, giving preferential treatment to any individual,
impeding government efficiency and economy, losing complete independence or impartiality,
making government decisions outside of official channels, and affecting adversely the confidence
of the public in integrity of government (pg. 1 2).
The third clause actually covers three somewhat disparate areas:
1.Financial Interests;
2.Use of Information; and
3.Use of Government Property.
The fourth clause governs the receipt of gifts, the exceptions thereof, and disclosure procedures.
Interestingly, the exceptions list is longer than the gift rule itself. For example gifts from immediate
family members or those with whom you have a close personal friendship are acceptable, which
seems logical.

Charles Waddell Chesnutt s The Wife Of His Youth
Charles Waddell Chesnutt was born in 1858 to two free born blacks with white ancestry, a
circumstance that caused him to appear more white than black. An analysis of his story The Wife
of His Youth , shows how much of an impact coming from a mixed raced family affected him.
During his time, those who were of mixed racewere called mulattos. Chesnutt s experience of
being a mulatto (which gave him the body of his work) made him question what really defined
someone s race, which he wrote about in many of his stories, like The Wife of His Youth. Having
a label for those in between white and black facilitated even more separation between people of
color and whites, because there was now a new group which did not entirely belong to either side.

During the ball that Ryder throws, the speaker states the importance this occasion held for
colored people: The occasion was long memorable among the colored people of the city; not
alone for the dresses and display, but for the high average of intelligence and culture that
distinguished the gathering as a whole (Chesnutt 1655). Having the guests consist of those who
were colored meant his confession of being married to Liza was showing other African
Americans to accept their identity and not try to be a member of white culture. This give more
importance to the scene, because Ryder is directing his confession towards the black audience
like Chesnutt was directing the story to the black community of his time. In his speech, Ryder
tells the story of him and Liza, keeping their identity a mystery; he goes on to ask if the man of
the story should acknowledge the woman after what she s done, which the audience agrees he
should. This public acceptance from the audience gives Ryder the confidence to acknowledge his
past and make it public for everyone to

(Descriptive Essay) (Title) A SWIMMING ADVENTURE
A SWIMMING ADVENTURE By Misty Moore Awaking early, I decided to sit on the screened
porch and watch the Florida sun come up. Within a very short time as I sat there, the sun peaked
on the horizon as it gradually awakened from its night of slumber. The dew sparkled like
diamonds as the sun s rays tenderly caressed the grass. Off in the distance, I could hear the world
spring to life as the birds began to sing a spectacular melody, growing louder and louder as each
bird began to chirp in unison, like a choir singing in church on Sunday morning. A new day had
dawned and I remember thinking how magnificent the birds song was and what a wonderful day it
was going to be. Returning to my duties as a mom, I started making breakfast for my... Show more

wish I had their energy. After resting a few minutes I picked them up, placed them one at a time
on my back and began to swim; we slowly swam under the blue water and up again and I could
hear them giggle with excitement and say Do it again mommy, do it again . A short time later a
commotion broke out interrupting our games, I struggled to hear what everyone was shouting
about and saw people running to the water s edge and pointing about fifty feet from where the
children and I were playing. Looking in the direction they were pointing, a man with his
daughter in tow yells, SHARK! without hesitation, I yelled to my son, Michael, get out of the
water! I grabbed Laura and Misty and headed to shore. My adrenalin pumping we reached the
shore incredibly fast, like a bolt of lightning streaking across the night sky. Only when we were
safely on shore did we look back to see three fins just skimming the surface of the water. I stood
there stunned and shocked watching the fins, wondering what kinds of sharks they were and very
grateful that everyone was in one piece. A few minutes later, the fins disappeared beneath the
surface and everyone was treated to a wondrous sight, there off in the distance, were three dolphins
jumping high into the air and making a big splash as they entered the

The s Historical Atlas Of Central Asia
For millennia, civilizations on either side of the Eurasian Continent exchanged both products and
ideas through the complex networks of the Silk Route. Central Asia, given its strategic position on
this route, long served a critical role at the crossroads between East and West. However, while
cultures on both ends of the networks have by and large been extensively researched, Central Asia
despite its centrality is frequently ignored or marginalized; rather than claiming a separate area of
study, it oftentimes retreats to the peripheries of a larger grouping, whether the Islamic world, the
Sinosphere, or the Russian Empire. Yuri Bregel, on the other hand, proposes an alternative
perception of the region. He contends that Central Asia... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Climate is a dominant factor in the development of Central Asian civilizations. In the first map,
titled The Principal Geographical Features and Provinces, Bregel paints the environmental
conditions of each locale with rich details (3). Deserts cast a pervasive presence in the map, limiting
both human movement and patterns of settlement. Because of Central Asia s high aridity, most
population centers lie on the banks of Amu Darya and Sir Darya, the main rivers in the region, as
well as their tributaries. These circumstances, together with the ubiquity of mountains in the south,
produce a series of sedentary provinces such as Ferghana and Khorezm that are relatively isolated
from one another. Furthermore, the deserts act as a natural barrier disjoining the mountain based
farming communities from the vast steppes to their north, where a more temperate climate and flat
terrains encourage nomadic ways of life. Conflicts often arise when the two groups intersect, and
the struggle between sedentary city states and nomadic empires comprises a key theme in the
history of Central Asia.
Nowhere is the distinction between the two categories more apparent than in the drawing of
political boundaries. Bregel explains in the preface that various Central Asian states knew to protect
their

sudden repetitive movements that only involve a small number of muscle groups. Involves eye
blinking, other eye movements, shoulder tension, facial rigidity, and head and shoulder twitching.
Complex: Very distinct characteristics. These complex tics involve several muscle groups.
Combined facial rigidity with neck and shoulder spasms, sniffing loudly, touching certain things

  • 2. The World Is A Dangerous Place In the words of Albert Einstein The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don t do anything about it. The importance of these words and the desire to pursue my Master degree in Science in Global Studies and International Relations came to me as an epiphany, while roaming the streets of Brazil. After a decade of working as a nuclear engineer, at one of the world s leading nuclear instrumentation companies, I have encountered numerous issues such as nuclear waste disposable, non proliferation, and energy independence. It is through these efforts that, I have come to realize that the greatest impediment to solving these problems is often the labyrinth of political hurdles and deciphering the technical implications of government standards. As an engineer, my world has been framed by logical assessments and conclusions. I was brought up and taught to think critically, analyze, and solve problems. I have been living in a microsphere of the nuclear industry and have come to the realization that the true solution to a problem often lies not only in science but in diplomacy. For example, a university in Egypt wanted to buy a monitor. The monitor they wanted to purchase did not contain any nuclear material (but did allow for workers to check if they are contaminated with nuclear material). This simple request became a rather interesting situation not only because my company is 96% owned by the government of France, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. An Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Of The D Urbervilles Thomas Hardy, a Victorian era poet, and novelist who was influenced by Romanticism, mostly known for his novels. Hardy was a naturalist, and we can see his realistic outlook on life proved in his novels such as Tess of the D Urbervilles. The novel first published in 1892, and was met with a great deal of controversy because of the subject matter. Hardy took issue the sexual morals of late Victorian England and religious skepticism. And it was enough to shock readers and get mixed reviews from critics. In Tess of the D Urbervilles, we get an idea in Hardy s sight about religion, he uses his characters to make observations that can be quite discouraging his Victorian readers. The novel tells the story of young, rural and innocent girl Tess, who discovers that she is from noble and ancient family. And her whole life changes to too bad after it. More precisely, when she meets with her new relative Alec and had been seduced by him. She loses her purity and give birth of a baby out of marriage, which was unacceptable for the unmarried women. She knows that after that nothing can be as before. However, she meets with another man, but it was too late. And none of them can be happy. Some people could think that the incidents that occur around the Tess and lead to the death of Alec D. and her own imprisonment and death are the result of her own deeds, pay for sins, but speaking for myself and I assume also for Hardy it is not quite so. • 6. Comparing Vampire And The Vampire Diaries Vampires are very present in today s society. Many novels and shows, like Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, show that vampires are still integral to our culture. However, the birth of such a cultural phenomenon would not have happened without Dracula. Without Bram Stoker s novel, there would be no stereotypical vampires that capture the culture s conscious. Aside from telling a story on vampires, Draculaalso explores ideals about the women of the time in which it was written, which is the Victorian Era. Throughout the Victorian period, one of the predominant concerns was the role of women and the place they fill in their society. Draculais one of many Victorian novels that explore the varying roles women filled. Two of the characters... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In one correspondence between her friend and Mina, Lucy discusses what it means to be a woman by calling it a cult. This cult reflects the expectation of women to serve as domestic homemakers and not venture outside the idea of marriage. The identity of women is something that is not meant to be seen as an individual but in terms of their utility to the sustenance of man. This point can be proven by not only some of Lucy s thoughts in the text but in many of her descriptions by other characters in the text as well. This lack of individuality in support of patriarchy is reflected in everything that Lucy does. The order of her day, where she will live, and even the smallest details of how she will speak. There is one instance in a conversation with her friend Mina that Lucy notes how she will only speak in a manner that her husband will like. Women in this age where expected to be this way, always dutiful and deferential to men, whether it be their husbands, fathers or brothers. This inferiority to men is important to note because it helps play into Stoker s (among other Victorian writers and Victorian people s views in general) character development of the women. In Dracula, Stoker illustrates some women as overtly sexual beings and other women as pure, chaste creatures. These depictions are represented through the different female characters. The characterization of the women who show the varying representations are reflections of the ideal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Essay on Pool Scenes in The Graduate Pool Scenes in The Graduate At first glance it may seem that the swimming pool in Ben?s backyard is no more than an insignificant setting choice for the movie. After close examination, however, the pool fills a critical role as the symbol of the recent college graduate?s internal struggle with decisions regarding his future. Key scenes involving the swimming pool and the related aquarium in Ben?s room chronicle the evolution of his transition from adolescents into adulthood. The opening scene of the movie in which Ben?s face is visible through the glass of his aquarium tank demonstrates his role as an adolescent upon arriving home from college. This is, however, only recognizable in a later scene taking place at the party his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robinson?a friend of his parents. This woman, the same age as his mother, becomes the catalyst for Ben?s eventual transition into adulthood. The first evidence of this is after Mrs. Robinson requests a ride home from Ben; she tosses her car keys to him but instead of landing in Ben?s hands, the keys fall into his fish aquarium. The emphasis of this action in the movie by a zoom in and pause on the tank demonstrates its importance as Ben?s childhood life, signified by the aquarium, has just been contaminated. The encounter foreshadows the loss of innocence that Ben experiences with his sexual relationship with Mrs. Robinson after she seduces him. At first, however, Ben does not give into her advances rejecting the idea of adult behaviors like an affair with a married woman. Resistance to growing up is further evident in his 21st birthday party at his parent?s home. This age has long had social significance in our culture?with the age comes freedom to drink, the end of childhood, and most significantly for Ben, the official and very public entrance into the adult world. After receiving a wet suit and scuba gear for his birthday, Ben?s parents ask him to take a swim in the pool to show off his new gift in front of the party guests. Objecting heavily, his father coerces him until he makes the walk from the house and enters the pool in his gear, obliging the crowd of his parents? friends. • 8. The Pros And Cons Of Discrimination Discrimination is a topic not many people talk about. One of the many disgusting things somebody can do is discriminate. Discrimination can be done in many forms; gender, age, race, beliefs, disabilities, religion, decisions, sexual preference and who they are as an individual. One of the main people who gets discriminated is people with disabilities, international students, and homosexuals. Discrimination in our communities take many forms, but it is solely based on people s race, gender, religion, weight, nationality, handicap, sexual preference and even height (The End). People discriminate in schools, they judge people by the way they look. Patients in hospitals will not let doctors to treat them usually because of the color. In some neighborhoods, landlords will not rent people a house because of their nationality. Model agencies do not hire models that do not meet their standards. Hollywood will not make an asian actor or actress the main character of a movie /show. People discriminate for different reasons. Some can not accept other people that are not like them. Many individuals are raised to think a certain way, leaving them to be closed minded. Another reason people discriminate is when others are not in the same level as them, or when they do not share the same beliefs. Insensitive people do not care about people s feelings and will not try to understand. Understanding is an important step to not discriminate. Discrimination in schools is nothing new to ... • 9. Ocean At The Lane The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a fictional memoir written by Neil Gaiman. The story took place in contemporary England. The protagonist, also the narrator, was a 7 year old boy who later became friends with Lettie Hempstock. She was an older girl living at the end of the lane. The narrator and Lettie Hempstock experienced a series of fascinating adventures. The antagonist, Ursula Monkton, appeared to be a friendly and good looking nanny, actually tried to control the world. She was revealed as a monster towards the end of the book. Later, he was caught and brought high in the air by Ursula which frightened him so much that he screamed, shouted for help and tried to kick her with his legs. While Ursula was ripped to shreds by alien vulture monsters, she was right in front of him. In the following attack from the cleaners , Lettie left him alone in a green circle, and he said that I have never been as frightened as I was. All of these horrible memories would shadow him forever for its strong impact on him as a child. Thus his encounter with Ursula Monkton would never truly come to an end, never reach a psychological closure. Lettie was killed by the vultures and slept in the ocean forever. The protagonists memories faded away over time, but as soon as he visited the Hempstock house, he recalled them all. These memories have been astonishing and unique to him because of the catastrophic nature of them, and they have changed him as a person. The Ocean at the End of the Lane was a story about fear and courage. The narrator was greatly influenced by Lettie and their friendship, the journeys he went on with her, and his fight with Ursula Monkton. He changed from an innocent child to a mature adult at the age of 7, because he confronted death, he was challenged by the horrifying Ursula and he made a true friend named Lettie. • 10. Analysis Of Covers The Ground By Gary Snyder Title To people foreign to California, the state is boxed into a set of stereotypical characteristics. The Golden State has received labels such as surf nation, and liberal land. But to those who ve gotten a chance to live within this great state appreciate the opportunities and ambitions that come with living in California. Furthermore, what truly differentiates California from any other place in the world is the consistent paradoxical environment. This notion is best epitomized by the city of Sacramento and the cultural, economic and social change that the city has undergone. Gary Snyder communicates this theme through building around John Muir s ideologies in his work of Covers The Ground. Snyder s work exemplifies the contradiction between nature and innovation. It presents the paradoxical state individuals around the world face on whether to accept the innovation and accept the benefits that come with it, or stay true to the roots of nature and the history that accompanies it. This dilemma boils down to whether we as a race embrace the progression of time and the paradoxes that follow, or we find solace in our current state. The inception of Covers The Ground, begins with establishing the setting of the city of Sacramento. Understanding the natural beauty of the city is best conveyed by establish vivid imagery and Snyder accomplishes this by describing the blossoming almond orchard acres. Arizona the most important aspect of due process and criminal procedure ever affecting law enforcement and prosecutorial conduct of an investigation. The main issues in this case were: * The admissibility of a defendant s statements if such statements were made while the defendant was held in police custody or deprived of freedom of movement in a significant way; * What procedures were required to guarantee the defendant s privilege against self incrimination according to the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution? This case is considered the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1965, the U.S. Supreme Court was seeking one or more cases similar to Escobedo v. Illinois to clarify their position, as its opinion in that case raised many issues regarding the safeguards and extent of such decision. Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote the majority s opinion and Justices Clark, Stewart, White, and Harlan presented three separate opinions. In the Court s opinion of this case, it discussed the legal basis for their decision, emphasizing the need for changes away from the traditional rules of custodial interrogation. This landmark case in criminal procedure was marked by great public criticism for the liberal stance shown by the U.S. Supreme Court. It ensures defendant s rights to what many people regarded as opening the door to convicted criminals to escape punishment through technicalities . III. PROFESSIONAL OPINION In Miranda v. Arizona the prosecution focused on the defendant s history with law enforcement to support their claim that Miranda s confession was offered knowingly. At the time, Escobedo was the only similar case regarding defendant s rights and was specific about the right to counsel. Meanwhile in Miranda s case, his main failing was being unaware of the consequences of confessing to a crime while under pressure or coercion of the police. • 12. Symbolism Lord Of The Flies William Golding s Lord of the Flies has many significant symbols that represent the emotions and thoughts of the castaways in the novel. The meaning of the symbols change along with how the characters think and act, starting as something innocent and turning dark and sinister. Three important symbols within the novel are: the conch shell, the signal fire and the beast. The meaning of these symbolsare significantly impacted by the growth of savagery and loss of civilization on the island, and the change in symbolism allows the reader to better understand the changes among the boys throughout the novel. Near the beginning of the novel, readers are introduced to the conch shell. The shell was found accidentally, but was seen as very valuable from the start. Most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that...was set apart (chapter 1, page 21). It was used to congregate the castaways to meetings and designate who could speak; in short, the conch represented order, civility, and authority among the characters. As the novel progresses, this symbolof civilization loses its power. A majority of the castaways embrace savagery and turn away from order, there are a few characters however, who remain faithful to the conch and its meaning. The meaning changes from just a sign of order to a reminder of civilization and a way for characters to hold on to reality. For example, Ralph, after admitting that he had joined in the ... • 19. The Pros And Cons Of Majority Rule Ever since the advent of democratic systems of political decision making in Ancient Greece, one of the primary concerns about democratic functioning has been the principle of majority rule. Whether a majoritarian system is divisive in its essence, paves the way for demagoguery, or obstructs minority groups from having a fair say in public affairs, criticisms of majority rule have and still persist nowadays. Indeed, notorious political figures such as Hamilton, Madison or Mill expressed concerns about the potential threat of a tyranny of the majoritywhich would infringe on citizens fundamental rights. Moreover and recently, the outcome of the Brexit referendum has renewed the debate around majority rule and its flaws. However, within the context of the contemporary world in which democracyprevails, majority rule is the norm many states follow. Why is this so; how can majority rule be defended and what are its limits? In order to provide an articulate and coherent answer, it is first necessary to lay down some premises to the functioning of the democratic process. Then, after arguing for majority rule, its flaws shall be assessed before eventually drawing potential alternatives from such dysfunctions. First of all, even though majority rule is often associated with democracy and political equality, the essence of democratic procedure does not require majority rule insofar as all the people have power over political affairs (Saunders, 2010). It is therefore necessary to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We have lasik surgery in order to fix our eyes, People... you can t fix stupid! by Ron White . So let me start, what comes into your mind when you hear the word lasik? So basically lasik means an eye correct vision which needs a laserto reshape the inner cornea. There are three types of eye conditions, the nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatism. So first let us know the nearsighted or (myopia), basically means that people who are nearsighted they can t clearly see a text or a thing that is too far from them and they need to move closer in that certain area, nearsighted people usually experiencing blur vision when they are far well they can read it but then the text itself will turn into a blur one. However, neurons can sometimes be bimodal, meaning that they respond to two different senses. Primary sensory areas contain neurons that respond to only one sense. However, some primary sensory areas have outlier senses, and is not exclusive. Perception is defined as the brain s interpretation of sensory information. However, that s not all, since expectations also play a role in how the brain perceives the world. Therefore, it can be said that perception is a combination of sensory information and expectation. There are two types of sensory information: ambiguous sensory information, which is when expectation dominates perception, and clear sensory information, which is when sensory information dominates perception. When sensory information dominates perception, neurons are being fired in response to the stimulus. However, when expectation dominates perception, how do the neurons that are being fired in our brain differ? In this case, since perception is based on our past experiences, what parts of the brain would there be the highest frequency of neuron activity? Taking this question one step further, how do the neurons that are being fired in our brain differ when ambiguous sensory information is present without expectation? What areas of our brain are most active when this occurs, since we have no expectation and there is also not enough sensory information present to activate the receptors? This is important to know in order to further understand the difference between how sensory information and expectation impact human perception in our daily lives. How Does Gwen Harwood Create A Sense Of Belonging A sense of belonging can be linked to many aspects of life, whether it be to people, places or cultures, and is often necessary for feeling a sense of happiness through a sense of identity or importance. The poem In the Park by Gwen Harwood and the short film More by Mark Osborne both show the positives and the negatives of belonging to people and society as a whole. In the Park and More show the negatives of belonging and not belonging, the former through a pessimistic tone and choice of diction, and the latter through repetition and the juxtaposition of colour. More shows the main character s lack of belonging through the absence of any form of connection to others, with the closest form of interaction being criticism from its boss. The director uses repetition of dull activities such as waking up, working and sleeping while maintaining close ups of discouraged facial expressions to illustrate the lack of meaning in one s life without belonging. In the Park shows the dissatisfaction of the female main character s life through an ongoing pessimistic tone, which describes her children s actions with words such as whine , bicker and aimless and associates the children as problems due to belonging to a family.... Introduction In this paper the article entitled Gold kiwifruit consumed with an iron fortified breakfast cereal meal improves iron status in women with low iron stores: a 16 week randomised controlled trial by Beck et al., 2010 will be critically appraised. This article investigates whether women s Fe status could be improved by consuming a Fe fortified breakfast cereal and milk with gold kiwifruit (high in ascorbic acid, lutein and zeaxanthin) compared with consuming the same breakfast with banana (low in ascorbic acid, lutein and zeaxanthin) with low Fe stores, each day for 16 days. Iron deficiency is a common health problem with symptoms such as fatigue, lack of concentration, weakness, headache, and increased risk of infection. Women are at greatest risk of developing iron deficiency due to monthly menstrual blood loss and increased needs during pregnancy. A Fe fortified breakfast cereal that enhances absorption and improves Fe status is an easy approach to address iron deficiency and its symptoms in women. Socrates assumed that nobody willingly opts to do wrong or evil things. He says that doing wrong always injured the wrongdoer and that no one seeks to carry harm upon themselves. The Socratic philosophy reveals that is not normal for an individual to want to do wrong on the grounds that their perception for self interest keeps them from doing as such. People do things every day that we may think is good but in all actuality is wrong. We may do it because we think it may have a positive outcome but deep down we know it s not right. In the Minister s Black Veilit really makes you think about the story and you look for clues that symbolize the veil. The principle effect of the veil is to avert explicit statements of what it stands for. Creating meaning and simultaneously hiding it.. There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sacharuses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character s name in multiple of his books as his writing style. One style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, She picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream. Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author s style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X Ray has. X Ray s glasses broke, and his tickets were stolen by Moses, while X Ray lay on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. In addition to conflict, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. As suggested earlier, Denver Department Stores has been experiencing declining sales over a period of a few months, though the actual reason why this is happening is unknown. This shows violation of human rightssince the rights of these children are considered ignorable in order to maintain the big system, of Snowpiercer. One of the solution suggested is the emergence of a leader with new points of view. There are three types of leaders that appear in Snowpiercer. Guilliam, the leader of the tail section, suggests the rebels to return to the tail section after they conquer the compartment controlling the water supply. From this action, he can be regarded as a realist. However, since he turns out to be one of the antagonists, he can be seen as a symbol of corrupted leader. Another leader is Curtis, who plans to take over the engine compartment to drive out the dictator. However, his solution is not ideal since it does not change the basic of the system. Rather, it changes the main agent of the dictatorship only. In contrast to these two leaders who were unable propose a solution capable of fixing the situation, Namgoong Minsoo approaches the problem from a new point of view. He suggests an absolutely novel solution, which is to escape from the train. Bong Joonho said Actually, the thought of Curtis is still binded up in the tail compartment although his body moved forward. However, Namgoong Minsoo has a totally different vision. While Curtis looks at the front, Minsoo always looks outside, even when he eats sushi or watches an airplane flying. Finally, he suggests a door that leads to the outside world and as the children walk towards the way that he suggests, the film ends (Naver film). Meat, China, And Communication Revolutions Meat, China, and Communication Revolutions In Armand Mattelart s book The Invention of Communication, the word communication is acknowledged as term with a great number of meanings. However, Mattelart proposes that communication could be specifically understood as circuits of circulation of goods, people, and messages (Mattelart xiv). This definition is critical to the thesis of this paper, because it alludes to industry being an essential component of communication. First, let s consider Gustavus Swift and his meat packing company, and how everything from the invention of the refrigerated rail cart, to becoming one of the first companies to utilize vertical integration exemplifies communication revolution. As Professor Gary Fields explains in an essay about communication and G. F. Swift, before the late 19th century, meat was a localized affair in which few Americans participated. In order for local butchers to get their meat, shipments of live cattle would come from the midwest. This was incredibly inefficient, as not all of the cow was edible. The cost of shipping was high, so the butcher would have to charge a pretty penny for the final cut of meat. Due to both the cost and lack of advertisement of beef, public interest in meat was low. In comes Gustavus Franklin Swift, an entrepreneur who realized the potential in meat packing, and helped fund the invention of the refrigerated rail cart. This technological wonder allowed cattle to be butchered first, and then have the meat shipped over long distances. This eliminated any unnecessary waste from being shipped, which meant money was saved and the company could charge consumers less than local butchers. In 1880, Swift had one cattle supplier, one ... • 44. Essay Comparing The Marriage Of Figaro And Twelfth Night A common discussion between the sexes is the omnipotent power that men seem to hold over women in all societies. Why do men always have the social advantage over women? Both Shakespeare s Twelfth Night and Beaumarchais The Marriage of Figaro show that there is indeed a social stigma placed on women where women are not allowed as much freedom to either fight back against a suitor or choose not to accept a suitor s love and choose another. Shakespeare s Twelfth Night focuses mainly on the negative stigmas against women, while Beaumarchais The Marriage of Figaro places most of the blame for perpetuating the stigmas on the aristocracy, especially the men within the aristocracy (i.e. the Count). The Countess, too, is in a similar position, although she is of the aristocracy. The Countess is held strictly accountable for the rumors that she was engaging in an affair, even though the Count himself is attempting to engage in his own affair with Suzanne. The Count accuses the Countess of unfaithfulness and doesn t even consider that his own attempt at an affair is an account of his own unfaithfulness. Because of Central Asia s high aridity, most population centers lie on the banks of Amu Darya and Sir Darya, the main rivers in the region, as well as their tributaries. These circumstances, together with the ubiquity of mountains in the south, produce a series of sedentary provinces such as Ferghana and Khorezm that are relatively isolated from one another.
