Ambrose Bierce s short story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge portrays the
inevitable nature associated with death and the aspects that make our reality real

Farquhar is characterized within the short story through his internal struggling, his
difficulties in deciding how to carry on his life end up destroying him. One of the
major issues that Farquhar suffers is that he dreams of reveling in glory. Social
problems specifically the civil war encourage this hunger for greater political
brilliance. Due to this drive for greater fame, Farquhar lets his ambitions overtake
him and cause him to make the initial mistake which will lead to his death. The
story states that no job was too humble or perilous for him, he was willing to take

story Farquhar makes the mistake of being fooled by a union scout into
committing a crime that leads to his death. His grand desires are too much for him

family. He struggles to become great not only in the eyes of society but in his own
eyes as well, it is this that drives him, grandeur becomes his one and only goal.
Greatness is something not all can reach and An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
demonstrates this by showing the failure of those who do not practice caution when
trying to fulfill their dreams. As the story states it is this imperious nature that ends
his life (Bierce, 2). This arrogant attitude is what stops him from being in the

First of all it was more of a presentation, and it was also a summary of the seven
main effective listening responses. Adia s presentation focused on the seven
responses; prompting, questioning, paraphrasing, supportive, analyzing, advising,
and judging. Adia s definitions of the responses we simply put and easy to
understand. Adia also included in her presentation what the possible outcomes of
each response can be; in what ways it would be helpful to another person. When it
came to the question response, Adia went in depth with what kinds of questioning

This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic
and the characters accessable, the author just doesn t have the space to spread out
and let the reader develop a real emotional response to these characters and their
actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective on the battle and what it means
even for the individual characters he has presented.
I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that
deals with Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn t really stand on its own.
The reader must come equiped with prior knowledge or be left with questions that
will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but I would have preferred a more
comprehensive treatment something more like Tom Wicker s Unto This Hour. That
s just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can t help it if I
just want more.
Fans of Shelby Foote s massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War,
(and I am the work s biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote s
earlier novel about the battle of Shiloh. I couldn t help thinking, however, that Foote
s real calling is as historian and commentator, and his effort to write a novel here
seems to be a bit off the mark.

It is just as easy to fall into the trap of our voyeuristic society today as it was for the
people of the 1950 s. In Alfred Hitchcock s, Rear Window voyeurism is a major theme
conveyed throughout the movie. J.B. Jefferies, Lisa, and Stella prove that human
fascination with voyeurism is not only addicting, but over time becomes contagious
and emotionally detrimental.
In the beginning of the movie the audience is introduced to the main character, J.B.
Jeffries. After an injury at work, Jefferies is stuck in his apartment with little to do.
This is when the idea of voyeurism is first seen in the movie. According to Google
Books, voyeurism is the observation of another person doing a private act. J.B.
spends his time looking out his window doing just that. He peers into his neighbors
apartments and watches as they live their everyday lives. He thinks he has each of
his neighbors figured out just by watching them through their windows. By the
middle of the movie Jefferies becomes so addicted to being a voyeur that he feels
the need to be closer. He therefore achieves this need by using his camera lens and

Canada relies highly on hydroelectricity as it is there major electricity producer,
they should not rely on these dams because they will start increasing extinction rate
