The Notorious Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County Essay
Mark Twain was a celebrated writer during his lifetime and is still today long past his death. One
of Twain s famous works titled, The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a prime
example of local color writing done during the 19th century. Twain s novel shows the average
person what life and the people in rural America are like. The story takes place in a gold mining
camp in Calaveras County, California during the 1850s. Out west was still very rural and full of
many different types of characters. Additionally, most people who lived out there had an accent and
verbage similar to that of the modern day southern United States. The characters themselves show
the type of place Calaveras county was, with the main character Smiley being... Show more content

In fact, the person who ends up beating is a man from out of town but still from the area. These
characters are small town folk, and close to one another they go so far as to know most each
other by name and reputation. The dialogue also shows how this story is a great example of local
color. The characters have quite an accent that at times can be hard to read and understand. An
example of the local accent through the stranger is I don t see no p ints about that frog that s any
better n any other frog (104). A more educated person would have more coherent and well put
together sentence than what the stranger uttered. Many characters in the story have accents similar
to the strangers and this really shows the difference between the world and the southern United
States. The story itself uses irony in the form of dramatic irony as we know that the stranger fills
Smiley s frog with buckshot making it unable to jump while Smiley is none the wise until after.
Additionally, the style of humor is very American. Twain wrote in another story that humor that is
subtle and not thrown in the face of the listener or reader is truly american in

A Modern Twist on Classical Renunciation
A Modern Twist on Classical Renunciation
Hinduism is a vast and very complex religion to comprehend and consists of various different
branches of philosophies. Although it is considered that Hinduism does not necessarily have one
text that provides the guidelines for the contemporary Hindu devotee, like the Bible does for
Christians, but there are a few scriptures that help identify the ultimate goal for the followers of
Hinduism. The Upanishads try to exemplify the message of obtaining the righteous path as much as
possible with rooting its context to the most ancient Hindu text, the Vedas. Tying both of these
scriptures together the main purpose of a practicing Hindu is laid out; which is being able to obtain
moksha, or liberation, from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though accepting the Advaita Vedanta means that there is no classification of male or
female amongst people, it still sets a barrier for women because according to the
Dharmasharstras, women were unfit to learn Vedic rituals and studies which are key
requirements of sannyasa (Khandelwal 2004: 37). Herein lies the most significant deviation from
the classical perspective of renunciation in modernity; most contemporary female renouncers,
also referred to as sannyasinis, have broken out of a tradition that is characterized by the
renunciation of rituals. They therefore have effectively redefined renunciation on their own
terms. Like most classical renouncers, sannyasinis also build vairgya and have completely
detachment from worldly materials. But unlike the classical renunciation where a renouncer
would go off to the forest and be by himself, the modern day female renouncers have become
more involved in social activism (Khandelwal 2004: 49). This is a clear alteration from the
classical renouncer because now the female renouncers are participating in a form of actions
which is still continue their cycle of karma, whereas the end goal is to stop exactly that according
to the classical practices. In Khandelwal s book Women in Ochre Robes, she uses various examples
of how different women are using types of social activism throughout their practices.

An Internship At Tufts Medical College

Aged Coffee Essay
What is Aged coffee?
Recently, there has been an increase in aging of coffee. According to the saying, Aged wine
looks great, Aged whiskey taste good so is aged coffee. The saying is not all about aged coffee or
aged whiskey. Also, aged coffee is not that exceptional, and it does not deserve the credit. Here is
the history, hype, and truth about aged coffee.
The History
Coffee was introduced to Europe in the mid 1500 s, it was referred to as aged coffee. During that
period, Mocha which is now Yemen was the primary supplier of coffee in Europe. Importing coffee
from Yemen to Europe takes a long journey through the sea around the southern region of Africa.
This long voyage is still held when coffee production spread through India and Indonesia.
As a result of these three great coffee origins and time, the saline sea air transformed the coffee

rebranded as a specialty product.
Also, most people believed that coffee age well, but this is highly controversial. Some people even
claim that the older a coffee gets, the better it tastes good, this statement is also controversial.
The Belief behind Aged Coffee
It is only some particular types of coffee that age well, and they need to be aged under some
specified conditions or else they will lose their oils and affect the coffee taste and flavor. This can
make the coffee taste sour or bitter.
According to some specialists, they claimed that the coffee does not get better with the long aging
process because the coffee loses more flavor as it ages.
Which Coffee Type Age Properly?
In a nutshell, only a few types of unroasted coffee beans age suitably. However, the best beans for

New Bedford Harbor Pollution Essay
New Bedford Harbor, the world s famous whaling seaport and current number one fishing port in
America, continues to be plagued by toxic pollution, which has caused it to become one of the
largest EPA Superfund cleanup sites. The harbor, an urban estuary, contains sediment that is highly
contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The PCB containing industrial wastewas
introduced into the harbor by two manufacturing facilities from the 1940 s to the 1970 s when the
EPA banned the production of PCBs. The result was contamination of six miles of the harbor
bottom from the Acushnet River into Buzzards Bay; over 100,000 people currently reside within 3
miles of the contaminated area. PCBs do not break down easily in the environment and therefore
pose a serious risk to human health and the environment. Thus, in 1982, the harbor was put onto the

With extra funding, the EPA would be able to clean sediments down to the 1 ppm level of PCBs
that the majority of similar waterway cleanups are subjected to, rather than the 50 ppm level
they are planning on. This target level would allow the harbor to be safely fished for the first
time in decades. Furthermore, we are demanding that the contaminated sediments are shipped
off site to a federally approved landfill as they were in the initial plan, rather than disposed of
hazardously on site in CDFs or CADs. Storing the contaminated soil on site would require that
the soils be exposed to air while dewatering, which would allow the PCBs to become airborne
and pose a serious health risk (4, 5). Our children and grandchildren deserve a clean harbor one
where they can swim, play, and explore without fear. This vision for the future will be a reality if
we negotiate with the EPA to amend their Record of Decision with more efficient cleanup

Cover of A Raisin in the Sun
Hansberry used the success of A Raisin In the Sun as a platform to speak out for the American
Civil Rights Movement and for the African struggle to free itself from white rule. She helped raise
money, gave impassioned speeches and took part in panels and interviews to further these causes.
After her initial success she lived only six years and was able to complete only one more play, a
movie and a television script which was too racially controversial to be aired. Her second play,
The Sign in Sidney Brustein s Window, was received with mixed reviews and kept open for 101
performances only by the contributions and support of the theatre community. It closed the night
she died at 34 from cancer. After her death Nemiroff finished and produced her final work, Les
Blancs, a play about African liberation.
Hansberry had begun to claim her identity as a lesbian in a 1957 letter to a lesbian periodical, The
Ladder. This information and her 1964 divorce from Nemiroff was not widely known at the time of
her death. In 1965 the Gay Liberation Movement did not exist and a woman could not claim such
an identity without major reprisals. It was not until the 1980s that feminist scholars began

The Bolam test comes from the Bolam v Friern hospital management committee (1957) in which

The patient wasn t fully informed of the side effects of the treatment and the patient suffered a

The Rubric Of Marking And Grading Students Work
One of the most commonly seen forms of marking and grading students work is the rubric. A
rubric is described by Andrade (2005) as an assessment tool that lists the criteria for a piece of

poor . A rubriccan be seen to act almost as a checklist in that it allows for teachers to select where
a piece of work falls against several criteria, allowing for more fair and balanced marking among

Bronze faces have a soul too The technique used to create bronze statues has always fascinated me,

It is an ancient technique dating back to the Bronze Age and widely used in classical times. Almost
completely abandoned by the Middle Ages, and later revived in the Renaissance. I ll try to explain in
a nutshell a process that is actually a long and laborious one. The first step in creating a bronze
statue is creating the terracotta statue (called soul); subsequently, this is coated with a layer of wax,
which the artist refines with all the details. At this point, the wax structure is sprued and a funnel

Participants that just have (vs. do not have) their shopping experiences in various shops(luxury vs.
non luxury; Chinese vs. European) are asked to evaluating on global products including coin shape
pizza and rice made burger.
Our hypotheses are: Chinese consumers that have the luxury or non luxury store shopping
experiences will influence their receptiveness towards the cultural mixing goods coin shape pizza

Method
In this experimental research, we selected four stores to represent four types of shopping

Participants.
Three hundred and sixty eight (368) Chinese customers completed the questionnaire. The reported
sample sizes in this study and all subsequent studies reflect the number of participants who satisfied
these preconditions. Since there were no gender differences in this or the subsequent studies, we do
not discuss gender further.

Essay on The Cultural Differences Argument for Moral...
Ruth Villagra
The Cultural Differences Argument for Moral Relativism. Moral Relativism is generally used to
describe the differences among various cultures that influence their morality and ethics. According
to James Rachels, because of moral relativism there typically is no right and wrong and briefly
states : Different cultures have different moral codes. (Rachels, 18) Various cultures perceive right
and wrong differently. What is considered right in one society could be considered wrong in
another, but altogether all cultures have some values in common. In Elements of Moral Philosophy,
the author gives examples of such. For instance, a tribe of Indians known as Callatians ate bodies
of their dead fathers; the Greeks turned to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Rachels, 20) Premises are supposed to support or provide evidence for the conclusion. To
summarize, he believes that there is not one objective truth or a correct way to dispose of the
bodies because although the culture s actions are different, their beliefs have a common value to
it. It is possible that the Callatians believed that through cannibalization, the spirits of their dead
fathers would be within them and by cremating or burying their bodies it would be viewed as a
sign of disrespect. ( Rachels, 30) If we were to look at the Eskimos example, Rachels argues that
even if in our society infanticide is seen as cruel and an immoral behavior, it is actually quite
logical because they are a nomadic tribe constantly traveling and rely on the males to hunt and
provide for the family the disadvantage would be having an overpopulation of females. He argues
that cultural relativism supports this belief because moral ethics is just based on different cultures
different cultures have different moral codes. There s a difference in opinion which means that you
can t judge the other and that there isn t just one truth of which is right and wrong. However,
Rachels also provides a different example that is actually a logical flaw that attributes to the
Cultural Differences Argument. Some people believe that the earth is flat and others believe it s
round. He argues that because of cultural relativism,

What Does Pride Mean To Me Essay
Let s say my favorite team just won the super bowl, and I have this overwhelming feeling I just
can not name. I become a parent a few years later and again that same feeling. My child learns to

though the years pass where that feelingcreeps up on me. That feeling is pride. Pride is any situation
in life where I feel that overwhelming sense of I did it, success in doing what was set out to do.
Now pride comes in various shapes and instance for everyone, but they can all have a common
source. Some of the most common things I and possibly others have a connection to are sports,
work, people and possibly sexual orientation. Though there are so many different possibilities or
interconnecting occurrences within these topics, that I could feel pride. Some are more
prideful in one instance than another, but it does not take away from any lesser situation either.
With these only being a handful of prideful occurrences, as there are too many to name. With

Monomyth In The Avengers
When you ask an adult who their hero is in life, it is typically someone who has touched their life
or has saved them and left a personal impact. When you ask a child who their hero is, they say
some mythical figure that has super powers and has had an impact on the world. There are many
heroes, known and unknown, in today s world that share one thing in common, the hero
monomyth. As I analyze the movie, The Avengers, using Campbell s monomyth stages, there are
several of Campbell s ideas that are seen throughout the storyline. The first section, called the

The Ultimate Boon happens when Loki asks, What have I to fear? Ironman himself says, The
Avengers. They are then able to fight against Chitauri, Loki s army, in the Magic flight/Pursuit and
eventually Cross the Return Threshold, which allows us to enter into the last Return phase of
Campbell s monomyth analysis. The Refusal of the Return is when the Avengers have found
enlightenment in the world of working together, and Ironman not wanting to return back to his
normalcy. The Magic flight is when Ironman redirects the missile, heading towards New York,
through the portal and destroys Loki s army. This made him a hero due to sacrificing himself to
save human kind. Ironman then falls back to earth and the Hulk jumps to save him from the
tremendous fall. This is an example of Rescue from Without because he is an ordinary hero who
needs guidance in his quest and needs to be brought back after defeating Loki and being weak.
Master of Two worlds is shown when Ironman wants to take the Avengers to a burger joint and
give them a day off from all the hard work they put forth in defeating Loki and his army. At this
point of the movie, he has now become comfortable in both worlds of being genius Tony Stark and

William Blake Syntax
Through diction, figurative language and imagery, and syntax, William Blake conveys an intense
and curious tone, revealing the doubt of whether or not human power was given by a higher being.
The author, William Blake, uses connotation to make his audience understand what the true subject
of the poem that he refers to is. For example, the word, tyger, in this poem is not specifying an
actual tiger, but is used to represent humans. When Blake says, thy fearful symmetry, he is giving
the tygerthe characteristics of strength and power. Humans, as well, are strong and have the
potential to create a big impact on the world, just as tigers do in the wild. Overall, the main focus
of this poem is who the creator of the tyger is. This is supported with And what shoulder, what art

There are questions about the tyger s creator, such as In what distant deeps or skies/ Burnt the fire

philosophical thinking that goes into questioning topics of religion. Moreover, the constant use of
question marks also adds the effect of curiosity in a more visual way. There is one exclamation
point used in this poem in the line, Dare its deadly terrors grasp! This shows the realization of the
frightening amount of power every human has, further supporting the intense

пѓ Delegation skills; Good leaders do not attempt to tackle all management issues alone, they use
their delegation skills to assign tasks to specific members to the team and to achieve a more
effective result. However, a good leader also facilitates the opportunities for their team to achieve
their goals and to manage time effectively. The junior security professional with no experience will
need to manage his time effectively; the key to effective time management is planning. The
successful time manager will plan their days, weeks and even years in advance their set goals
could be short term or long term schedule, for example long term schedule will include updating the
security survey, security system reviews and the regular maintenance of physical security controls
there are key four principles that enable the security professional to manage their time effectively.
1.Prioritization; An effective time managers will have a clear idea of exactly what they wish to
achieve and when. This approach enables the security professional to decide which tasks are
priority over others and avoids the tendency to attempt to tackle too many tasks simultaneously.
2.Scheduling; the scheduling of task avoid the pitfall of task being attempted randomly and out of

The Devil s Arithmetic By Jane Yolen
It is difficult for anyone to truly understand devastating situations that occur in our history unless
we actually experience them ourselves. No matter how much we research, how many pictures we
observe, or even the personal stories from the individuals who endure those hard times. We can
imagine the pain and tragedy of it, however, can we truly understand it? In The Devil s Arithmetic
by Jane Yolen, is a character named Hannah Stern who undergoes a glimpse of such a tragedy and
completely shifts her outlook on her family s history in the Holocaust. Throughout the story,
Hannah depicts an unappreciative hora towards remembering the past of her family, subsequently
she receives the glimpse of the past and completely transforms her attitude. Hannah attended a
Seder that her grandparents performed for Passover. Before she arrived, Hannah made excuses that
she did not know it was Passover, or that she forgot about it, and how she already ate to be excused
from it. Her mother explained the importance of remembering to her, which Hannah replied with,
All Jewish holidays are about remembering, Mama. I m tired of remembering (Yolen 4). Already
demonstrating her indifference about remembering what took place so long ago, one receives the
sense that Hannah is simply another teenager that is ignorant towards such important events in life.
Her ignorance is also demonstrated when Hannah had been younger and took a fascination in the
number on her grandpa s arm, therefore she thought

I watched another man having a mid life crisis, pull out of the Novak car dealership across the

The Stages Of Phil Runs
When PHIL runs, it has three distinct stages that the code runs through. First is the initialization
stage. This is where the code that needs to be set up first runs. The next stage is the execution
stage, which is arguably the most important stage. This is where the majority of the code executes.
Any code in the execution stage repeats until the user terminates it. The final stage is the
termination stage, which happens after the user terminates the execution stage. This is where all
tasks stop and any code which needs to complete, can do so safely. Tasks in PHIL are pieces of
code that will execute repeatedly. Tasks can be anything from the satellite propagation to the
sensors. The Lua script handles the scheduling, initializing, execution, and termination of these
tasks. Each task runs according to how the Lua script has it scheduled and the code will continue
to run until the user gives the command to terminate the task. Figure 2 shows the architecture of
PHIL. This portion of the reboot focuses on the simulation side and not the flight software side. As
these tasks run, they may have data that other tasks require to successfully run. A way of handling
this transfer of data from one task to another is to adopt a Publish and Subscribe System. This
system allows for the transferring of variables without getting in the way of the scheduler and
makes sure that all tasks receive the same data for that given moment of time. For example: The
satellite propagation publishes

Alexsandro Palombo Essay
I also chose a picture of Disney princesses created by AleXsandro Palombo. There are a few
reasons he states that are the inspiration behind the images. The first being that he suffered
paralyzation in some parts of his body after surgeries to remove a rare cancer that he had. He is
now disabled and experiences what he says is discrimination and humiliation. He wants to create
an awareness of this problem. The next reason he gives is there are no Disney movies depicting
a princess with a disability and he believes that now is the time for Disney to consider creating a
princess with a disability because there are now more than ever so many people with
disabilities. He wants Disney to get the message that Disabled people have rights and are part of
the world. I agree with what AleXsandro Palombo says about Disney, they have not had any

Kurt Vonnegut and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Kurt Vonnegut was an American writer, born in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents, Kurt Vonnegut
Sr. and Edith Vonnegut, both studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He
had two older siblings, Bernard and Alice. He attended Cornell University, along with his
siblings. He enlisted in the army while at Cornell, and from there the army transferred him over to
Carnegie Institute of Technology and then to the University of Tennessee, in which he studied
mechanical engineering. One of his most known works, Slaughterhouse Five , was about a
soldier in World War II, much like himself, and the journey s he goes through after, during, and
before the war. Billy Pilgrim, the main character in the story randomly travels through time, and is
abducted by aliens who see everything in fourth dimension. Billy was an optometrist, who then
was drafted into the military. Billy pilgrim reflects the type of man that Vonnegut is himself. He
writes of himself through the fictional character, Billy. It is clear that they both suffer with Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is a disorder, common in war veterans, that causes anxiety due
to a tragic accident or injury that the person experienced. It causes the person to have horrible
flashbacks, or memories of the accident. In Billy s case, the bombing of Dresden could account for
the tragic accident that caused the anxiety. Vonnegut is using this allusion, as he was present and
survived in the bombing of Dresden as well. As

Mediterranean World Continuities
There were changes to the Mediterranean World, but also continuities from the Roman Empire in
100 CE, to the Abbasid Empire in 800 Ce, to Feudal Europe in 1000 CE. Christianity and Islam,

Christianity and Islam became the dominant religions in the Mediterranean by 1000 CE, and as

many themes in this novel, but I believe these are the three most important ones. I will explain each

In A Long Way Gone, A big part of the story is Ishmael explaining what he and his friends had to

Why The Death Penalty Should Stay Legal
There have been 1466 executions in the United States since 1976. This was the year that the
supreme court reinstated the death penalty. They maintained that is was constitutional under the
8th amendment. The death penalty has been around since the beginning of the United States.
Although there have been many debates and changes made the death penaltyis still used today. The
death penalty should stay legal. It should be used for only the most terrible crimes. If there is no
serious punishment for serious crimes people are more likely to commit them.
America needs to practice the laws that they preach, otherwise what kind of country is that? The
United States is built around the idea of justice. This means to do what is fair and right. If a serial
killer murders five people then gets caught, those families are going to want justice. They are
going to want that man to get what he deserves and for justice to be served. Somebody who takes
another human being s life deserves to be executed. It s not right and it can t be acceptable in the
United States. A country needs to do what is right and what people want. The United States is a

There is no benefit and no fairness in letting someone who should have been executed spend their

Today when a human baby is born the first question that is asked is Is it a boy or a girl? In

Discuss Inventory Management (Chapter 20) from the perspective of cost, customer satisfaction
and profitability. What is the Wal Mart approach to Inventory Management? Inventory costs are
basically categorized into several different elements, but the elements that are typically derive the
most impact to the bottom line are ordering costs and carrying costs. However, costs associated to
shortages or stock outs, the cost of replenishment, cost of logistics, and cost associated with loss,
pilferage, shrinkage and obsolescence are significant to profitability too.
Ordering costs are based on two different factors including the ordering of excess inventory or not
enough. In some instances, procurement departments are challenged with purchasing decisions
whereas vendors will offer better buying prices if they tend to order in larger quantities. Initially,
the cost savings may seem beneficial up front, however, far too often the actually savings is not

ordering insufficient amount of inventory can result in stock outs and loss of sales ultimately

Oppression Of Women In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Cook, clean, please, repeat. This was the typical lifestyle for women throughout most of history.
Women were the charming possessions that belonged to their husbands; their power was their

peers and do something important with her life. Currently, much has changed. Women are more
forceful than they have ever been, but they are still subject to the prejudice and bias that comes

The human brain has been programmed over centuries to think that men are stronger and better.
In the past years, people have done an incredible job with trying to break the barrier of what
defines a man s capabilities versus a woman s. Women are definitely viewed as stronger, but in
comparison to a man, they are still weaker. Many men still have the same mindset, that they can

through the ages in India. Today that social structure is called the Jati or in English words, the Caste
system. While it has undergone a few changes here and there, the system has relatively been
unchanged and just like thousands of years ago when it was first introduced in the Vedas, it exists in
modern day India as a part of society in it. This paper will go over a more detailed explanation of
the Jati as well as the classes and books that defined the Jati system, most notably the Laws of
Mandu . Jati translates to caste so in English it is called the Caste system. In the Jati system
there are four main castes one falls under: Shudra, Viasya, Kshatryia and Bhramin. Outside of the
caste system are the outcasts or also called untouchables. Within these main four castes there are
thousands of subcastes a group of people will fall under. One important thing to note where
unlike most social classes of ancient time, in the Jati system, it is possible to move up in the
caste. While a subcaste may not move up as an individually, the entire group can move up. So
while there is subcaste A and subcaste B. While Subcaste B is currently higher up on the caste it
is possibly for subcaste A as a whole to move up above subcaste B. This is the beauty of the Jati
system, groups are not permanently logged into one place

that ecosystems are split into different sections of the river instead of prioritizing it into one single
ecoregion. The problem with this is that scientists have not studied large portions of the Congo,
leaving many other inhabitants of the river undiscovered. Wherever humans occur near the water,

Descriptive Essay On Driving
Riding with my older sister, Alex, when she first started driving was terrifying. The car swerved
and jerked as she sped down the highway. Sitting in the backseat, my eyes were constantly wide
with fear, and I often found myself gripping the handle on the door until my knuckles turned white.
Whenever a car approached, my heart began to beat rapidly out of fear that she would hit it.
However when my other sister, Emily, started driving, I enjoyed riding with her. She drove the
speed limit and rarely swerved out of the lines. I could calmly sit in the backseat with my hands
lying in my lap, my heart at ease. It is amazing how two sister who went to the same driving class
with the same instructor could have such different parking skills, levels of distraction, and driving
styles. Emily is by far a better driver than Alex. One way Emily and Alex are different drivers are
their parking skills. Alex hastily parks, but Emily slowly and precisely parks. For example, Alex
hurriedly pulls into the biggest parking spot available, frequently parking crookedly and taking
up two spots. However, Emily carefully maneuvers her car into parking spots and will pull in
and out to ensure she is within the lines. Whenever Alex, Emily, and I went to highschool
football games, we usually arrived late and most parking spots had already been taken. Alex
drove down countless blocks scanning the streets for the largest and easiest spot to park in town;
she always chose to walk four or five blocks in blistering cold to get to the game rather than
attempting to parallel park. On the other hand, Emily always tried finding the spot closest to the
football field even if it meant squeezing into a tight spot or parallel parking.
In addition to parking differently, Alex and Emily are also opposites when it comes to distracted
driving. Alex is a distracted driver, but Emily is not. Whenever Alex drives, she is always
multitasking, fixing her makeup, eating, and messing with the radio. However, Emily only wants to
focus on the road when she is behind the wheel. For example, Alex did not like taking the time to
sit down and eat breakfast at home before school. Instead, she ate her breakfast while she was
driving, bringing her full smoothie cup

  • 2. The Notorious Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County Essay Mark Twain was a celebrated writer during his lifetime and is still today long past his death. One of Twain s famous works titled, The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a prime example of local color writing done during the 19th century. Twain s novel shows the average person what life and the people in rural America are like. The story takes place in a gold mining camp in Calaveras County, California during the 1850s. Out west was still very rural and full of many different types of characters. Additionally, most people who lived out there had an accent and verbage similar to that of the modern day southern United States. The characters themselves show the type of place Calaveras county was, with the main character Smiley being... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, the person who ends up beating is a man from out of town but still from the area. These characters are small town folk, and close to one another they go so far as to know most each other by name and reputation. The dialogue also shows how this story is a great example of local color. The characters have quite an accent that at times can be hard to read and understand. An example of the local accent through the stranger is I don t see no p ints about that frog that s any better n any other frog (104). A more educated person would have more coherent and well put together sentence than what the stranger uttered. Many characters in the story have accents similar to the strangers and this really shows the difference between the world and the southern United States. The story itself uses irony in the form of dramatic irony as we know that the stranger fills Smiley s frog with buckshot making it unable to jump while Smiley is none the wise until after. Additionally, the style of humor is very American. Twain wrote in another story that humor that is subtle and not thrown in the face of the listener or reader is truly american in ... • 3. A Modern Twist on Classical Renunciation A Modern Twist on Classical Renunciation Hinduism is a vast and very complex religion to comprehend and consists of various different branches of philosophies. Although it is considered that Hinduism does not necessarily have one text that provides the guidelines for the contemporary Hindu devotee, like the Bible does for Christians, but there are a few scriptures that help identify the ultimate goal for the followers of Hinduism. The Upanishads try to exemplify the message of obtaining the righteous path as much as possible with rooting its context to the most ancient Hindu text, the Vedas. Tying both of these scriptures together the main purpose of a practicing Hindu is laid out; which is being able to obtain moksha, or liberation, from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though accepting the Advaita Vedanta means that there is no classification of male or female amongst people, it still sets a barrier for women because according to the Dharmasharstras, women were unfit to learn Vedic rituals and studies which are key requirements of sannyasa (Khandelwal 2004: 37). Herein lies the most significant deviation from the classical perspective of renunciation in modernity; most contemporary female renouncers, also referred to as sannyasinis, have broken out of a tradition that is characterized by the renunciation of rituals. They therefore have effectively redefined renunciation on their own terms. Like most classical renouncers, sannyasinis also build vairgya and have completely detachment from worldly materials. But unlike the classical renunciation where a renouncer would go off to the forest and be by himself, the modern day female renouncers have become more involved in social activism (Khandelwal 2004: 49). This is a clear alteration from the classical renouncer because now the female renouncers are participating in a form of actions which is still continue their cycle of karma, whereas the end goal is to stop exactly that according to the classical practices. In Khandelwal s book Women in Ochre Robes, she uses various examples of how different women are using types of social activism throughout their practices. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

New Bedford Harbor Pollution Essay New Bedford Harbor, the world s famous whaling seaport and current number one fishing port in America, continues to be plagued by toxic pollution, which has caused it to become one of the largest EPA Superfund cleanup sites. The harbor, an urban estuary, contains sediment that is highly contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The PCB containing industrial wastewas introduced into the harbor by two manufacturing facilities from the 1940 s to the 1970 s when the EPA banned the production of PCBs. The result was contamination of six miles of the harbor bottom from the Acushnet River into Buzzards Bay; over 100,000 people currently reside within 3 miles of the contaminated area. PCBs do not break down easily in the environment and therefore pose a serious risk to human health and the environment. Thus, in 1982, the harbor was put onto the EPA s National Priorities... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With extra funding, the EPA would be able to clean sediments down to the 1 ppm level of PCBs that the majority of similar waterway cleanups are subjected to, rather than the 50 ppm level they are planning on. This target level would allow the harbor to be safely fished for the first time in decades. Furthermore, we are demanding that the contaminated sediments are shipped off site to a federally approved landfill as they were in the initial plan, rather than disposed of hazardously on site in CDFs or CADs. Storing the contaminated soil on site would require that the soils be exposed to air while dewatering, which would allow the PCBs to become airborne and pose a serious health risk (4, 5). Our children and grandchildren deserve a clean harbor one where they can swim, play, and explore without fear. Moral Relativism is generally used to describe the differences among various cultures that influence their morality and ethics. According to James Rachels, because of moral relativism there typically is no right and wrong and briefly states : Different cultures have different moral codes. (Rachels, 18) Various cultures perceive right and wrong differently. What is considered right in one society could be considered wrong in another, but altogether all cultures have some values in common. To summarize, he believes that there is not one objective truth or a correct way to dispose of the bodies because although the culture s actions are different, their beliefs have a common value to it. It is possible that the Callatians believed that through cannibalization, the spirits of their dead fathers would be within them and by cremating or burying their bodies it would be viewed as a sign of disrespect. ( Rachels, 30) If we were to look at the Eskimos example, Rachels argues that even if in our society infanticide is seen as cruel and an immoral behavior, it is actually quite logical because they are a nomadic tribe constantly traveling and rely on the males to hunt and provide for the family the disadvantage would be having an overpopulation of females. He argues that cultural relativism supports this belief because moral ethics is just based on different cultures different cultures have different moral codes. There s a difference in opinion which means that you can t judge the other and that there isn t just one truth of which is right and wrong. However, Rachels also provides a different example that is actually a logical flaw that attributes to the Cultural Differences Argument. Some of the most common things I and possibly others have a connection to are sports, work, people and possibly sexual orientation. Though there are so many different possibilities or interconnecting occurrences within these topics, that I could feel pride. Some are more prideful in one instance than another, but it does not take away from any lesser situation either. With these only being a handful of prideful occurrences, as there are too many to name. With football season upon us we all have out teams, most of us being Packer fans. So we sit in front of that tv and wait for the magic of Rodgers and Nelson, or Matthews doing what they do. I cannot help the feeling of pride and joy when they score or make that tackle. We are happy for our boys succeeding, even more so against the Bears. I feel pride for winning but mostly for the players to have come together as a team and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When you ask a child who their hero is, they say some mythical figure that has super powers and has had an impact on the world. There are many heroes, known and unknown, in today s world that share one thing in common, the hero monomyth. As I analyze the movie, The Avengers, using Campbell s monomyth stages, there are several of Campbell s ideas that are seen throughout the storyline. The first section, called the Departure, starts off with Tony Stark being a self obsessed billionaire who is a genius, and he will soon become a superhero. They are then able to fight against Chitauri, Loki s army, in the Magic flight/Pursuit and eventually Cross the Return Threshold, which allows us to enter into the last Return phase of Campbell s monomyth analysis. The Refusal of the Return is when the Avengers have found enlightenment in the world of working together, and Ironman not wanting to return back to his normalcy. The Magic flight is when Ironman redirects the missile, heading towards New York, through the portal and destroys Loki s army. This made him a hero due to sacrificing himself to save human kind. Ironman then falls back to earth and the Hulk jumps to save him from the tremendous fall. This is an example of Rescue from Without because he is an ordinary hero who needs guidance in his quest and needs to be brought back after defeating Loki and being weak. Master of Two worlds is shown when Ironman wants to take the Avengers to a burger joint and give them a day off from all the hard work they put forth in defeating Loki and his army. William Blake Syntax Through diction, figurative language and imagery, and syntax, William Blake conveys an intense and curious tone, revealing the doubt of whether or not human power was given by a higher being. The author, William Blake, uses connotation to make his audience understand what the true subject of the poem that he refers to is. For example, the word, tyger, in this poem is not specifying an actual tiger, but is used to represent humans. When Blake says, thy fearful symmetry, he is giving the tygerthe characteristics of strength and power. Humans, as well, are strong and have the potential to create a big impact on the world, just as tigers do in the wild. Overall, the main focus of this poem is who the creator of the tyger is. The next stage is the execution stage, which is arguably the most important stage. This is where the majority of the code executes. Any code in the execution stage repeats until the user terminates it. The final stage is the termination stage, which happens after the user terminates the execution stage. This is where all tasks stop and any code which needs to complete, can do so safely. Tasks in PHIL are pieces of code that will execute repeatedly. Tasks can be anything from the satellite propagation to the sensors. The Lua script handles the scheduling, initializing, execution, and termination of these tasks. Each task runs according to how the Lua script has it scheduled and the code will continue to run until the user gives the command to terminate the task. Figure 2 shows the architecture of PHIL. This portion of the reboot focuses on the simulation side and not the flight software side. As these tasks run, they may have data that other tasks require to successfully run. A way of handling this transfer of data from one task to another is to adopt a Publish and Subscribe System. This system allows for the transferring of variables without getting in the way of the scheduler and makes sure that all tasks receive the same data for that given moment of time. Women are definitely viewed as stronger, but in comparison to a man, they are still weaker. Many men still have the same mindset, that they can own a women. Rape and abuse numbers are high currently, and this is because men still feel entitled to more than a woman. According to The National Sexual Assault Hotline, 1 in every 6 women has been the victim of sexual assault (RAINN). Today s society is much more accepting than in the time that Steinbeck wrote in, but this does not change the fact that sexism still exists. Another article from RAINN gives people the appalling statistic that there are 321,500 rape cases in the United States alone, and that every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Rape and abuse or only some of the examples that expose sexism in today s world. Abortion laws, people who serve in the military, athletics, and work environments are all places that sexism still lives. The government today also makes it harder for a woman to reach for her goals, as many people in power are still misogynistic in their ways. A woman should not have to fight for rights that should have been given to her in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Analysis Of The Book The Wolf Following her usual route to Grandmother s house she kept a constant vigil, as the woods had become more treacherous over the years. The local trappers and lumberjacks told tales of shadows moving independently and the trees showing a more menacing visage, so far their stories were proving accurate. Red even noted that the woods seemed denser than before, the tree branches creating a canopy that completely blocked out the afternoon sun, making it seem as if even the sun offered no sanctuary in these woods. In any case, Red was not too bothered by it, her lycanthropy serving as a boon, gifting her the ability to see fairly well in the absolute darkness. Moments later Red came to a familiar fork in the road, a flood of memories coming back to her as she starred at the spot where she had met the Wolf for the first time. At first she started for the usual path, but then it occurred to her, why not use the shortcut? she thought, The Wolf has been long dead and there has not been any cause for worry for some time. As she turned to walk down the path a voice called out Why do you continue to not mind your mothers warnings? Red jumped and quickly turned, drawing her staff and quickly recalled an array of spells as she scoured her surroundings looking for the source of the voice. Who are you? Red shouted, And what do you know of my mother? There is no need to shout dear girl , the voice hardened I am merely a concerned citizen wondering why a lovely young lady, such as ... • 40. Review Of The Jati Aaron Thomas Nancey Moore HIS 111 4106 9 September 2015 The Jati Thousands of years ago in Asia, a book was written that gave social structure that would go on through the ages in India. Today that social structure is called the Jati or in English words, the Caste system. While it has undergone a few changes here and there, the system has relatively been unchanged and just like thousands of years ago when it was first introduced in the Vedas, it exists in modern day India as a part of society in it. This paper will go over a more detailed explanation of the Jati as well as the classes and books that defined the Jati system, most notably the Laws of Mandu . Jati translates to caste so in English it is called the Caste system. In the Jati system there are four main castes one falls under: Shudra, Viasya, Kshatryia and Bhramin. Outside of the caste system are the outcasts or also called untouchables. Within these main four castes there are thousands of subcastes a group of people will fall under. One important thing to note where unlike most social classes of ancient time, in the Jati system, it is possible to move up in the caste. While a subcaste may not move up as an individually, the entire group can move up. So while there is subcaste A and subcaste B. While Subcaste B is currently higher up on the caste it is possibly for subcaste A as a whole to move up above subcaste B. This is the beauty of the Jati system, groups are not permanently logged into one place ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Descriptive Essay On Driving Riding with my older sister, Alex, when she first started driving was terrifying. The car swerved and jerked as she sped down the highway. Sitting in the backseat, my eyes were constantly wide with fear, and I often found myself gripping the handle on the door until my knuckles turned white. Whenever a car approached, my heart began to beat rapidly out of fear that she would hit it. However when my other sister, Emily, started driving, I enjoyed riding with her. She drove the speed limit and rarely swerved out of the lines. I could calmly sit in the backseat with my hands lying in my lap, my heart at ease. It is amazing how two sister who went to the same driving class with the same instructor could have such different parking skills, levels of distraction, and driving styles. Emily is by far a better driver than Alex. One way Emily and Alex are different drivers are their parking skills. Alex hastily parks, but Emily slowly and precisely parks. For example, Alex hurriedly pulls into the biggest parking spot available, frequently parking crookedly and taking up two spots. However, Emily carefully maneuvers her car into parking spots and will pull in and out to ensure she is within the lines. Whenever Alex, Emily, and I went to highschool football games, we usually arrived late and most parking spots had already been taken. Alex drove down countless blocks scanning the streets for the largest and easiest spot to park in town; she always chose to walk four or five blocks in blistering cold to get to the game rather than attempting to parallel park. On the other hand, Emily always tried finding the spot closest to the football field even if it meant squeezing into a tight spot or parallel parking. In addition to parking differently, Alex and Emily are also opposites when it comes to distracted driving. Alex is a distracted driver, but Emily is not. Whenever Alex drives, she is always multitasking, fixing her makeup, eating, and messing with the radio. However, Emily only wants to focus on the road when she is behind the wheel. For example, Alex did not like taking the time to sit down and eat breakfast at home before school. Instead, she ate her breakfast while she was driving, bringing her full smoothie cup ...
