Habit 1 : Be Proactive
freedom to choose (take action and be
responsible)
Habit 2 : Begin with the end in mind
consciously plan out and visualize your actions
Habit 3: Put First things First
Organize and execute your priorities
Habit 4 : Think win-win
respect (in negotiation, seek solutions that
help both yourself and the other person)
Habit 5 : Seek first to understand, then be
understood
understanding (in communication, listen
actively before you talk)
Habit 6 : Synergize, creation (in work, open
yourself to
others to work effectively in teams)
Habit 7 : Sharpen the Saw
renewal (relax, rejuvenate, and revitalize
yourself)
Synergy:
 interaction, cooperation, combined effort,
give and take.
 Basically, all it means is WORKING AS A
TEAM!!
OR
 The whole is greater than the sum of its
parts.
 1 + 1 = 3
Synergistic communication is opening your
mind and heart to new possibilities. It may
seem like you are casting aside "beginning
with the end in mind," but you are actually
fulfilling it by clarifying your goals and
discovering better ones.
 Co-operation among individuals begins to flow easily.
 Inspiration level of individuals goes up, because each
member of a team is inspired to try new things as by the
other members do.
 It helps to broaden and improve communication by
discussion or exchange of ideas at a larger whole among
the individuals.
 It increase individual’s efficiency by integrating the skills
and ideas to create a innovative goal.
 Synergy In The Class Room
 Synergy In Business
 Whole being greater than the sum of its
parts.
 There are the times when both of them
know what’s going to happen.
 In the there is safe environment
 Brain storming
 An absolutely unusual phenomenon
Example
 Trust among students
 Mutual respect by all
 Teamwork
 Good communication skills
 A common goal
 Motivation to achieve that goal
Negative Synergy & Valuing
the Differences
Negative Synergy
Negative synergy refers to "2 + 2 = 3" effect.
 This means that the combination of two efforts from
two individuals have a lesser output than they would
attained if they have worked separately.
• Smart, hardworking people gather, waste time, and make a
bad decision.
Result of Negative Synergy
Negative synergy refers to "2 + 2 = 3" effect.
The result of negative synergy is waste. The meeting is
a waste of time for everyone involved, and time is
money.
Valuing Differences
Valuing differences is what really drives synergy.
• People who grow in environments having high diversity are
most able to take advantage of the increased productivity
that can result from collaboration.
• Vice versa, those that feel less comfortable when working
with those who have different ideas, ideologies, religions,
or backgrounds are least able to take advantage of
synergy.
• Many people mistake uniformity
for unity or sameness for oneness.
Three Approaches to Diversity
 Diversity can be a positive thing or a negative thing
depending on your perspective and background.
 Level 1: Shun diversity - People who shun others are
afraid of differences.
 It disturbs them that someone may have a different skin
color, worship a different God, or wear a different brand of
jeans.
 They are convinced their way of life is the
“best” or “right”, or “only way.”
 The person who is truly effective has the
humility to recognize his/her own personal
physical, mental, and cultural limitations.
Three Approaches to Diversity
 Level 2: Tolerate diversity – Tolerators believe that
everyone has the right to be different.
 They don’t shun diversity but don’t embrace it either.
 It’s the “Don’t bother me and I won’t bother you” attitude.
 Level 3: Celebrate diversity - Celebrators value
differences.
 We should celebrate differences.
 To celebrate diversity on every
issue is actually hard for most people.
THIRD ALTERNATIVE
 Third Alternative thinking offers a
way to resolve conflict and
disagreement without any party
feeling as if they have
compromised or given up
ground.
 This is a very creative process,
requiring fresh, creative and
spontaneous thinking.
 In any conflict, the 1st Alternative is my way
and the 2nd Alternative is your way. The fight
usually boils down to a question of whose way
is better
THIRD ALTERNATIVE
 The objective of this technique is to find a 3rd Alternative to
an issue between people. This is not my way or your way or
a watered down version of either; the 3rd Alternative is a
solution With trust, openness, a positive emotional bank
account and a win/win attitude.
THIRD ALTERNATIVE
According to Covey, 3rd Alternative thinking involves
applying four paradigms
Fishing for the third alternative
In vacation time, a husband wants to take
his family out to the lake country to enjoy
camping and fishing.
However, His wife wants to use the
vacation time to visit her ailing mother.
Their differences could be the cause of a
major negative experience.
Their children are excited for going on the
fishing because all year long they looked
forward to this one-week vacation.
As they disagree, they finally may come up with some kind of
compromise.
 They may decide to split up, the husband takes the boys fishing
at the lake while the wife visits her mother. And they both feel
guilty and unhappy.
 The husband may give in to his wife, but he does it unwillingly.
 The wife may give in to her husband, If her mother were to
become seriously ill and die, the husband could never forgive
himself.
 Whatever compromise they finally agree on, It
could be a source of contention for years and
could even polarize the family.
 As they are husband and wife, so they have a
high Emotional Bank Account, they have trust
and open communication in their marriage.
Because they Think Win-Win, they believe in
a Third Alternative
 So they communicate, the husband deeply feels
his wife's desire, her need to be with her mother.
 And the wife deeply understands her husband's
desire to have the family together and to provide
a great experience for the boys.
So they decided, they could locate a place to camp
and fish that would be close to her mother. The area
wouldn't be as nice, but they
could still be outdoors and meet other needs as
well.
 They synergize. They communicate back and they come
up with a solution they both feel good about.
 Instead of a transaction, it's a transformation. They get
what they both really want and build their relationship in
the process.

Valuing Differences Valuing differences is what really drives synergy. • People who grow in environments having high diversity are most able to take advantage of the increased productivity that can result from collaboration. • Vice versa, those that feel less comfortable when working with those who have different ideas, ideologies, religions, or backgrounds are least able to take advantage of synergy. • Many people mistake uniformity for unity or sameness for oneness.
  • 33. Three Approaches to Diversity  Diversity can be a positive thing or a negative thing depending on your perspective and background.  Level 1: Shun diversity - People who shun others are afraid of differences.  It disturbs them that someone may have a different skin color, worship a different God, or wear a different brand of jeans.  They are convinced their way of life is the “best” or “right”, or “only way.”  The person who is truly effective has the humility to recognize his/her own personal physical, mental, and cultural limitations.
  • 34. Three Approaches to Diversity  Level 2: Tolerate diversity – Tolerators believe that everyone has the right to be different.  They don’t shun diversity but don’t embrace it either.  It’s the “Don’t bother me and I won’t bother you” attitude.  Level 3: Celebrate diversity - Celebrators value differences.  We should celebrate differences.  To celebrate diversity on every issue is actually hard for most people.
  • 35. THIRD ALTERNATIVE  Third Alternative thinking offers a way to resolve conflict and disagreement without any party feeling as if they have compromised or given up ground.  This is a very creative process, requiring fresh, creative and spontaneous thinking.
  • 36.  In any conflict, the 1st Alternative is my way and the 2nd Alternative is your way. The fight usually boils down to a question of whose way is better THIRD ALTERNATIVE
  • 37.  The objective of this technique is to find a 3rd Alternative to an issue between people. This is not my way or your way or a watered down version of either; the 3rd Alternative is a solution With trust, openness, a positive emotional bank account and a win/win attitude. THIRD ALTERNATIVE
  • 38. According to Covey, 3rd Alternative thinking involves applying four paradigms
  • 39. Fishing for the third alternative In vacation time, a husband wants to take his family out to the lake country to enjoy camping and fishing. However, His wife wants to use the vacation time to visit her ailing mother. Their differences could be the cause of a major negative experience. Their children are excited for going on the fishing because all year long they looked forward to this one-week vacation.
  • 40. As they disagree, they finally may come up with some kind of compromise.  They may decide to split up, the husband takes the boys fishing at the lake while the wife visits her mother. And they both feel guilty and unhappy.  The husband may give in to his wife, but he does it unwillingly.  The wife may give in to her husband, If her mother were to become seriously ill and die, the husband could never forgive himself.
  • 41.  Whatever compromise they finally agree on, It could be a source of contention for years and could even polarize the family.  As they are husband and wife, so they have a high Emotional Bank Account, they have trust and open communication in their marriage. Because they Think Win-Win, they believe in a Third Alternative
  • 42.  So they communicate, the husband deeply feels his wife's desire, her need to be with her mother.  And the wife deeply understands her husband's desire to have the family together and to provide a great experience for the boys. So they decided, they could locate a place to camp and fish that would be close to her mother. The area wouldn't be as nice, but they could still be outdoors and meet other needs as well.
  • 43.  They synergize. They communicate back and they come up with a solution they both feel good about.  Instead of a transaction, it's a transformation. They get what they both really want and build their relationship in the process.
