Lovecraft begins the story by saying The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the

unstable, and vulnerable. It puts him in a place of knowledge over the reader as well, perhaps
making the reader feel just as vulnerable as he is, since the line implies that there is something

could be subtly implying, is out there in the unknown. This gives the unknown an almost tangible

has popped up before in prior readings, so there is some familiarity with both concepts. Now comes
what their synthesis looks like in practice. In this light the readings forced me to re examine
positionality, especially in the framework of auto ethnography. At first I thought this was too
obvious but in light of the titular question Stacey asks Can There Be a Feminist Ethnography? the
feminist researcher s proximity to the data and interpretation positionality becomes the fraught
answer to consider, Her awkwardness (if that s the right word) in balancing the tightrope as an
ethical researcher between product and personal integrity feels unexpected yet palpable. The
dilemma she faces forced my recognition that conflicts of interest and emotion between the
ethnographer as authentic, related person (i.e. participant), and as exploiting researcher (i.e.

The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad presents several themes throughout its composite narration
of characters and the ideas it amplifies through the novella. Amongst all the many themes that
are presented, there is one main theme that is thoroughly supported by Conrad in The Secret
Sharer. The theme supported is, the ability that a person has, to change their beliefs due to the
inexperience as a leader, self doubt. In the beginning the Captain is an ethical individual, yet his
interaction with the murderer, along with Leggatt, reveals him as someone who is insecure,
allowing the captain to make many illogical decisions, and in the end put his crew in harms way,
showing that he is unfit to remain captain of the ship. The Captain is introduced into the novella
as a young seaman, who was chosen to be the captain of a sailing vessel on its voyage back
home. The young captain displays himself as an experienced sailor yet is filled with much self
doubt as he is the second youngest man on the ship, and has little leadership experience,
especially as a captain. The captain s self doubt is easily manipulated by many individuals on the
boat when he first gains command. The captain s first impression of inexperience as a leader is
shown when he decides to perform anchor watch for the first half of the night. I felt painfully that I
a stranger was doing something unusual when I directed him to let all hands turn in without setting

These sanctions do seem appropriate. It is unclear from the details of the release what the
defendant s motives were in his negligence. If he was simply ignorant or lazy, then the sanction
seems fair, and hopefully served as future motivation for Federico to take his work seriously.
However, if the oversights and lack of documentation were done to cover up shoddy work in order
to receive some kind of remuneration from Soyo, then Quinto probably deserved more punishment
