The Origins and Purpose of the Goblin Queen in George MacDonald´s the Princess and the Goblin
Whatever the purpose of a story may be, whether the tale is a philosophical, moralizing or merely
entertaining one, an assortment of characters with sufficient depth, notability and believability is vital
to shoulder the burden of the author s intent. George MacDonald, in one of his most famous novels,
The Princess and the Goblin, displays an acute awareness of this fact, presenting us with some of the
most colorful and unforgettable characters seen in children s literature. When considering the
exceptional imagination MacDonald infused into his story and characters, it is little wonder that The
Princess and the Goblin is considered to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Traditionally, goblins or hobgoblins are generally creatures associated with a single household, who
performs ... services for the family to whom he attaches himself (Keightly, 239). This is usually after
some inconvenient trials placed upon the family by the goblin, such as sawdust in the house or dirt in
the milk, all to test the disposition of the family and their recognition of the goblin s partial claim to
the household (Keightly, 239). It is clear that this traditional goblin hardly fits the description of
MacDonald s more menacing, subterranean goblin, and it has been suggested that the dwarf in folklore
better describes this type of creature (Morris). Dwarves are a subterranean race [that] has no proper
communication with mankind, who accomplish their business in the night, and not by the day
(Keightly, 217). This nearly echoes The Princess and the Goblin, where the goblins had all taken
refuge in the subterranean caverns, whence they never came out but at night, and them seldom showed
themselves in any numbers (MacDonald, 12). MacDonald s goblins also show the natural
mischievousness of dwarves who had a propensity to thieving ... even women and children, which
fueled the goblin s desire to kidnap Princess Irene.
It is from clear which traditions MacDonald has drawn in the creation of his species. Ironically,
however, the queen of the goblins is decidedly ungoblin like, even among the race of humanoids in

3. Argumentative Essay On Texting
Governor Greg Abbott signed into law a bill on June 6th of 2017 to ban texting while driving in the
state of Texas. The measure was authored by state representative, Tom Craddick. This bill went into
effect on September 1st of 2017. This had become the fourth session in a row that state rep, Tom
Craddick, had attempted to pass the ban on texting while driving. Craddick stated By enacting this
public safety legislation, the governor is saving lives by deterring this dangerous deadly behavior...

repeated offense. Carpio 1 To start off, yes, I do believe the House Bill 62 should have been passed. It
prevents the risk of losing lives due to texting while driving. In 2016 there was 6,632 total vehicle
crashes caused by cell phone usage. From 2014 to 2016, the amount of fatal vehicle crashes caused by
cell phone usage increased by fifty two percent. By creating this bill, the amount of crashes due to cell
phone usage will drastically decrease. Often people believe that sending one text message is okay, but
most times it is that one text massage that causes a crash. Texting while driving is simply a distraction
that could wait until the vehicle is stopped, but instead most people feel they cannot wait. Sending one
message, or making one phone call is something so simple that could easily cost someone their life.
So, I do agree that this bill was needed in order to avoid the many crashes and deaths associated with

5. The Types Of General Data
Qualitative and Quantitative are the two types of general data. Quantitative is data the deals with
quantities, information that can be measured and put down as numbers on paper. An example
quantitative data can be someone s height, shoe size, and length of hair. Qualitative data is information
that can t be measured but still existed in a sense that we can understand. When taking the two of these
and put them into the format of research they both have different aims in trying to collect their own
types of information that can be analyzed.

data that you may collect, any responses that you have put together from unstructured qualitative
methods. Another aspect that needs to be considered about qualitative research is that it doesn t have a
existing set system to identify and label the data. So a research need to use create their own methods

6. Symbolism In Alice Walker s Everyday Use
Alice Walker, author of Everyday Use , was a well known author. She used three types of symbolism
such as the quilts made by African American that bore significances, the house that was burned and
the one that was rebuilt, and hands is various areas of the story. The main characters were the mama,
sisters Maggie, and Dee. Maggie was the young girl who was scared due to burns, and Dee who was
the Miss Goody two shoe type of girl and also thought she could get anything she wanted.
Different types of symbolism are used to add significance to point out the uniqueness in connotations
that a writer uses when writing literature. An author s literary works may include multiple symbols to
give the perception to his or her readers. When an author uses a symbol, it is intended to heighten the
sense of a user s communication of literary works. The three key symbols in the short story in
Everyday Use is that of quilts stored away in a trunk, the house, and hands. The quilts represented the
African American s women s talent of creativity from those that were made from by other individuals
from other people. The quilts depicted that of a guiding principle during the time of slavery for which
they were used to send a form of communication to other slaves (Kirszner and Mandell, 2012). As

7. Five Variants Of Christianity
The traditional beliefs that are traditionally associated with Christianity are the founded from their
sacred text, the bible. Which is believed to be divinely inspired and authoritative. This is going to
focus on the major five variants of Christianity. The five major variants are: Orthodox, Roman
Catholic, Anglican, Protestant and last but not the least by far, Pentecostal.
The principle beliefs can be broken down into 5 points which are: The Divinity and Humanity of Jesus
Christ, the Death and Resurrection of Christ, Nature of God and the Trinity, Revelation and Salvation.
The Divinity and Humanity of Jesus Christ refers to the statement that Jesus was fully human and
fully God. This statement can vary largely for the major variants. Orthodox ... Show more content on

However, some of the more liberal churches take a different approach and discard different pieces of
the Bible which they do not think are inspired by God, they think that the Bible is flawed with human

Salvation is believed by all the major variants of Christianity. Pentecostals believe in an afterlife and
that you can only enter through belief in Jesus. They believe that there is heaven and hell and people
will be divided up in the end times.
Protestants and Catholics have a similar belief about salvation. They both believe that they are saved
by God s grace alone. However, the difference between Protestants and Catholics is how they respond
to God s grace.
The protestant belief is that they are saved by faith alone. Some Protestants even say that there is
nothing one can do to earn a spot in heaven. All you have to do is accept Jesus Christ into your soul as
your personal lord and saviour and you are saved. Works are not mentioned in this, some
denominations say, once saved always

14. A Generation Of Slackers By Catherine Rampell
As generations go by, our predecessors assume we are skipping out on important aspects of life just to
get a few extra minutes on our devices. In Catherine Rampell s A Generation of Slackers? Not So
Much , it is said the older generations believe Generation Y is coddled, disrespectful, narcissistic, and
impatient (Rampell 388). In all reality our generation is just doing what it has to in order to thrive in
the world we live in, where technology is one of the largest parts of our everyday lives. If the older
generations that criticize Generation Y had grown up in Generation Y they would realize the world we
live in requires the use of technology. The advancement of society with technology has shaped
Generation Y to be the people that they are, relying on technology; however, older generations believe
Generation Y is lazy. The world we live in today depends on technology to run. We have phones that
can practically do anything. That is where the older generations say we are lazy, it is not that we are
lazy, instead we are intuitive and resourceful. These words are viewed differently by Generation Y as
we are trying to simplify everything, allowing work to be done faster. For example, in A Generation of
Slackers? Not So Much it states, College students also spend fewer hours studying then their
counterparts in 1961... (Rampell 389). We no longer need to go to the library because we can access

Video games do not incite violence because their contents are incomparable to reality. Although
gaming technology is constantly evolving, their basic setup remains the same: a controller to input

information, games, and link all the components together. For us, these elements mainly appeal to only
two primary senses: sight and sound. In the real world, we involve all five of our senses to monitor our

City. His white mother also tells her story, where she was raised a Jew. She married a black man and
had eight children, including James. Before James was even born, her husband died. She remarried to
another black man and had four more children, all black. While growing, James and his siblings look
for answers about their odd lives in their mother. One of their common questions is about skin color.
After church one day, James asks his mother about the color of God. What color is God s spirit It

She is very spiritual, emphasizing the importance of church and God to her children. Mommy loved
God. She went to church each and every Sunday, the only white person in sight... (McBride 45). She
tells the children children to focus on their education and God, not the color of their skin. To the her,
the only person whose opinion matters is God. If God loves both whites and blacks, why should it
matter what color one s skin is? If this view was shared by all Americans, life for blacks would have
been much easier. This is why Ruth McBride sees no problem with marrying a black man. He is just
another human being, whom she loved. When her first husband died, leaving her with eight children,
she remarried quickly. Like the first, he was black, and she was able to look past the color of his skin
and see his humanity. She, like God, sees past his skin and looks within. He also dies, but not before
giving Ruth four more children, making a total of twelve children, all with different skin color than
Ruth. If all Americans, both then and now, were able to look past the outside, whether it be race, sex,
sexual orientation, or religion, America would be a better place to live. James, on the other hand, is

2. Case Study Summary and The French Market
The key issues the case study is dealing with are: insufficient knowledge of the Disney s management
about the French culture and habits, a venturous initial financing, and wrong marketing and pricing
policies.
The Walt Disney Co. opened its first European Disneyland in Paris in April 1992. The Paris location
accepted the bid for the biggest and most lavish Disneyland by this time due to generous incentives of
the French government and the impressive demographic characteristics of this region. Since the
Disney management figured out that 310 million people or possible visitors can reach Euro Disney
within a two hours travel by plane, it was expected to attract 11 million visitors in the first year of
operation.
Euro Disney adopted an early advertising campaign to emphasize the details and size

23. The Transportation Industry
INTRODUCTION
Fraud is a pervasive and omnipresent threat in the modern business environment. While the controls to
help mitigate the risk have become increasingly sophisticated, so too have the methods in which
employees, managers and even third parties defraud victim entities. While some industries seem more
at risk than others it is important to recognize the vulnerability that is common to all of them. One
industry that seems to be able to avoid the worst of fraudulent acts is the Transportation Industry.
Through use of time tested control methods and avant garde procedures to help mitigate business risk,
the industry is able to consistently place ahead of others in rates of fraud occurrences.

An example is an airlines heavy reliance on real time systems to book flights, manage flights, and
make sure planes aren t flying into each other in mid air (McMahon, 2014).
The airline industry has recently been focusing inwardly on revenue growth, yield management, and
balance sheet strength. The permanent threat of terrorism creates an element of uncertainty when it
comes to an airline company s operations. There are significant challenges to implement effective
security and risk management systems. Large investments in required infrastructures are correlated to
these challenges (PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2014). There is also a strong demand for public transport
recently as a result of environmental awareness and congestion. Railroads have difficulty meeting this
demand because of a limited infrastructure capacity. This public transport competes with roads for
investment funds and many planning processes for railroad projects take a long time to deliver
(PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2014). The shipping subsector contributes an extreme amount to global
transportation and logistics. It has been historically cyclical with volatility in vessel values,
shareholder returns, and freight rates. The international economic and political environment also has a
large effect on shipping. The business environment is challenging with a few specifics risks. Risks

debt while sustaining growth.
b. As Mr. Clarkson s advisor, would you urge him to go ahead with, or to reconsider, plans for sales
expansion and additional debt financing?

comes to financial statements and reporting needs.
a. Reporting and statements is not a mandatory requirement for sole proprietorship as they are
required by corporations. It can lead to a weak financial control.

25. Term Structure of Interest Rate
WITH REFERENCE TO THE UK EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT OF THE TERM STRUCTURE OF
INTEREST? WHAT INFLUENCE DOES THE BANK OF ENGLAND HAVE OVER THE TERM
STRUCTURE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR MONETARY POLICY
To understand the term structure of interest rate we need to elaborate how interest rates function and
how they are determined. Interest rates are a vital tool to all the macro economic policy objectives of a
government such as control of inflation, investment as well as employment. Interest rates refer to the
price paid by deficit agents for borrowing funds from the surplus agents. A line that plots interest rate
at a set point in time is the term structure or yield curve.
Interest rates which may be short term or long term are linked to a ... Show more content on

This particular curve is unusual as it is inverted. The market is anticipating a fall in rates and hence the
shape of the yield curves. The sensitivity of such a curve can be explained taking into account that the
change in the rates reflected is small, 0.24% over the duration of the security, 30 years. This is quite
relevant when speculating on future economic conditions. (www.bankofengland.co.uk)
There are three main theories which relate to yield curves. The pure expectations theory implies that
forward rates are unbiased estimators of future interest rates. This theory states that the term structure
of interest rates reflects the views of the market about the path of future short term interest rates. Thus
when explaining a positive yield curve, the market will be expecting short term interest rates to rise in
the future. The opposite applies when the curve is negative and when flat the markets expect short
term interest rates to remain approximately the same. This theory generally over estimate interest rates
and does not assume that investors are risk averse and want a higher return when investing.
The liquidity preference theory states that bond holders are risk averse and wish to be compensated for
holding the long term security by a liquidity premium. The normal yield curve to explain this should
be up sloping indicating preference for liquidity by investors and lower risk of shorter term

Critique Questions For The Odd Couple
1.) After watching The Odd Couple I was astonished by how outstanding the actors were. I was
instantly drawn to the show and loved every act of it. Personally, I liked Vera s performance who is
played by Shakiba Shadman and Manolo Costazuela who is played by Adam Mercado. They were
very entertaining and they portrayed their role very well. Vera is basically a girl who is not very
intelligent and she is enthusiastic. Manolo Costazuela is a Spanish man who lives with his brother and
he wants to find himself a new girlfriend. Manolo s character is very hard to play because he has a
Spanish accent which makes it difficult. However, Adam Mercado played the character well by doing
the Spanish accent and being humorous. On the other hand, Shakiba Shadman played Vera really well
because it is extremely tough to play a foolish character. Shakima Shadman portrayed Vera well and
made her likeable rather than annoying. They both were very good actors and they did not ... Show

31. Examples Of Magical Realism In Bless Me Ultima
The conventions of Myths, Fables, and allegory all have magical elements in common like magical
realism. But what sets magical realism aside from these genres is that it portrays magical or unrealistic
elements in such a way that it is viewed as natural. Matthew Strecher defines magical realism as what
happens when a highly detailed realistic setting is invaded by something too strong to believe . Some
elements that authors use to support magical realism is using unexplainable things/events in the
context to be normal, metamorphosis occurring, and not using regular constructs of time.
Unexplainable magical events/things occur and are embeded in the context to be normal therefore
distinguishing it from fantasy making it an element of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author of Bless Me, Ultima also uses this element using the Trementina sisters. In chapter 10 as
ultima begins to heal lucas, the trementina sisters who have now morphed into coyotes begin to howl
in pain because of ultimas curse. Ultima says, oh those Trementina sisters are going to have cuts and
bruises tomorrow (95). It is known by the townspeople that witches have the ability to turn into
coyotes which is why it is accepted and ordinary. Another example of a metamorphosis is in Big Fish
when mr.calloway transforms into a werewolf. In the movie Edward bloom was going to see
Mr.Calloway at his trailer in the carnival but when he arrives he notices the trailer shaking and
trembling. When he opens the door expecting Mr.Calloway a werewolf jumps out at him. We know
the werewolf is Mr.Calloway because he is a harsh and unwilling man which showed through the
werewolfs actions. But after the wolf calms down Edward actually beings to play fetch with him which
shows that he did not see this as an odd thing. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a magical realism author, also
uses this element in his story A Very Old Man With Wings when carnival comes to town and the
townspeople say she had been changed into a spider for disobeying her parents. She was a frightful
tarantula the size of a ram and with the head of a sad maiden (10). Marquez uses imagery and other
literary devices to show how unrealistic the

All I can say from doing this research is to, for myself, pay closer attention and be aware of the
shaping of our society through the way radio stations push certain songs and we interpret them. I feel
as if with this information it can open up more room for investigation as far as learning how the
payola procedures play out and how does radio become more dominant than the actual music industry
who produces the music. With this piece of knowledge, I find myself wanting to reject the idea of
radio being available to help us find new music, instead I see it as a way to promote certain artists and
profit off of them without actually paying their songs because its good. These industries are continuing
to push for consumerism when in reality it should be set up as a world of knowledge that teaches
everyone through their lyrics and the information they put out. Its should not be this easy to influence

ABSTRACT
The aim of this report is to present the numerical analysis of human head response in a car accident in
the sagittal plane. This is achieved by making oneself aware of the dynamic loading that arises at the
instant accident occurs and the response of the human head to such loading. The response is usually
biomechanical, which can be studied in terms of head acceleration due to the impact caused by the
collision of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To predict head responses which cannot be estimated accurately by an experimental approach, several
FE head models, ranging from simple 2 dimension models to complex 3 dimension models have been
developed [4 5]. Just one predetermined specific condition can be analysed by each type of model.
Moreover, some of the adjustments made by researchers to simplify calculations which have many a
times, compromised the accuracy of the results are simplified material models (linear elasticity),
idealized geometries, or geometries of a 50th percentile male human head. It is suggested that the
brain s mechanical response is altered by the size of the head, the central fissure and sulcus, the
tentorium and Dura matter. Hence, these components have to be taken into account. The shape of the
skull, the composition of gray and white matter, geometry of other soft tissues and the volume of
cerebrospinal fluid vary greatly between even similar sized tissues, so no two persons have the exact
same response. Hence, a universally relevant head response has to be derived to facilitate the car
manufacturers to design counter measures.
With a specific end goal to fulfill the different safety and government security regulations, a
productive assessment and analysis strategy must be created. The most regularly utilized system for
assessing the inhabitant protection capacity of the specific vehicle is collision testing. It can either be

Improved the Detection Ratio of Cyber Attack Using Feature Reduction Based on Support Vector
Machine and Glowworm Optimization
Abstract The swarm intelligence plays vital role in feature reduction process in cyber attack detection.
The family of swarm intelligence gives bucket of algorithm for the processing of feature reduction
such as ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization and many more. In family of swarm new
algorithm is called glowworm optimization algorithm based on the concept of luciferin. The luciferin
collects the similar agent of glow and proceeds the minimum distance for the processing of lights.
Such concept used for the reduction of feature in cyber attack classification. The reduce attribute
classified by well know classifier is called support vector machine. The combination of support vector
machine and glowworm swarm optimization performs very well in compression of pervious feature
reduction technique. The proposed algorithm is implemented in MATLAB software, for the validation
of algorithm used KDDCUP99 dataset.

Beauty Among Death in Gravestone of a Girl with Doves The High Classical Greek Period is

Since this sculpture is a gravestone, I felt that the sculptor made this gravestone with a gradient effect
with the low/high reliefs in order to signify that the young girl was fading away into death. A peplos,
which is a typical garment seen on specifically women in Greek art, hangs over her shoulders and
seems to create a dragging down feeling to the sculpture since peplos is heavy fabric. The peplos also
accentuates her body without actually revealing much of anything, which was appropriate considering
the time period, the age of the girl depicted, and the purpose that the sculpture served as, which is as a
gravestone. There is no movement whatsoever, but there does seem to be a subtle vertical line running
through the young girl s contropossto stature.
An expression is worth a thousand words. The young girl depicted shows no emotion, which is a
typical characteristic in the classical greek style. It looks as though the girl depicted has her mind
somewhere else, which actually creates a sense of peacefulness since her expression is not one of pain
or discomfort . Unlike most Greek sculptures that are massive in size, this sculpture is smaller because
it depicts the death of a small child. According to the description besides this sculpture, the doves that
