A genius between two
centuries

2. Francisco Goya y Lucientes was the most
outstanding painter of the end of the 18th
century
and the beginning of the 19th
.
He developed his own painting style that was
unlike any other trends of this time, anticipating
later styles such as Impressionism,
Expressionism and Surrealism.

4. 1. Tapestry cartoons and portraits (1774-1792)
At the beginning of his career, he painted
tapestry cartoons, which represented popular
and happy themes painted in bright colours,
such as The Grape Harvest, Autumn, The
Parasol and The Puppet.
These works gained him prestige and he was
named court painter of Charles IV.

8. 2. Portraits, paintings and
engravings (1792-1814).
He produced some magnificient
portraits of the royal family, such as
Charles IV of Spain and His Family;
and noble figures, like the Duchess of
Alba, with loose brushstrokes and
psychological depth.

13. During the War of Independence, he painted
pictures of the conflict, like The Second of
May 1808 and The Third of May 1808.
He made engravings, such as Los Caprichos
and The Disasters of War.

19. 3. Black paintings and exile (1814-1828).
After the war, the sick and deaf Goya decorated
the walls of his house with the Black Paintings,
which were named for their dark colouring and
dark subject matter, such as Saturn devouring
his son or Witchches' Sabbath.
