3. Introduction
 Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was born in Fuendetodos, Zaragoza,
on the 30th of March 1746. He studied to become a painter and a
printmaker in Madrid and he travelled to Italy in 1770. At the time
his style was New-Classicism. He returned to Madrid to paint but
with a different style, because in 1793 he suffered from a serious
illness and became deaf, in the paintings he reflected his outlook on
humanity and his fear of insanity. He died in Bordeaux, France, on
the 16th of April 1828.

4. 70´s
 Goya worked for the Royal Tapestry Factory between
1775 and 1776. He started as a painter, but this was
important to introduce him in the aristocratic circles. His
style mixed Rococo and New-Classicism to have the style
that he need. He painted four series of cartoons:

7. 80´s
 In 1787 Goya painted for Charles
III.
 During the 1780s, his circle of
patrons grew to include the Duke
and Duchess of Osuna (whom he
painted), the King and other
important people of the kingdom.
In 1786 Goya became court
painter. After Charles III´s death
in 1788 and the revolution in
France in 1789, during Charles IV
´s reign, Goya reached his peak
of popularity with royalty.

11. 90´s
 In 1793 he suffered
from a serious illness
and became deaf.
This illness changed
his style. His new
style was more
creative and original,
but with darker colors
than the paintings for Yard with Lunatics
the Royal Palace.

12. The Nude Maja
 The Nude Maja was one of Goya´s most
famous paintings. This painting also was
famous for the scandal it caused.

13. Goya’s Famous Etchings
The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters
It consists of a self-portrait with his head on a table,
as owls and bats surround him, assailing him as he buries his head into his
arms. Seemingly poised to attack the artist, they are symbols of folly and
symbols of ignorance.

14. The Peninsular War
 The Peninsular War, between 1808 and
1814, caused a great impression on Goya.
After the war he painted The Third of May
of 1808 and The Charge of the Mamelukes
and a series of etchings called War
Disasters.

16. Later years
When Ferdinand VII came back to Spain,
Goya lost his job and he had to retire to a
house on the Banks of the river
Manzanares. He started painting
mythological themes, like Saturn
devouring his son, Fight with cudgels, The
dog, Two old men eating soup.

17. Dark Paintings
 His paintings reflected
haunting themes,
reflective of both his
fear of insanity and
by then, his bleak Atropos
outlook on humanity.

19. One of his last paintings was The Milkmaid of Bordeaux.
He died on the 16th of April of 1828, because his health
was very delicate, not only for his tumor process and a
fall down stairs.
