I chose to write my research paper on the Blackfoot reservation which is home to the
Blackfoot tribe. The Blackfoot tribe was sometimes known as the classic example of
the Plains Indians. The Blackfoot reservation actually consists of four different tribes
and those are the Blackfoot/Siksika, Blood/Kainai, Pikuni/Peigan, and North Peigan

place in their relationship. Cohabitation is viewed by some as simply a stepping stone
to marriage, while others view it as a practical and convenient alternative to living
alone. According to population researcher Pamela Smock, cohabiting couples
sometimes continue with their living situation even when it doesn t lead to marriage

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Cohabitation
Cohabitation also varies by racial/ethnic groups. As previously mentioned, Hispanic
women were found to be much more likely than white women to become pregnant in
cohabitation, and they are much more likely to stay with their partner when the child
is born (Manning 2001). Another point of variance is that cohabitation is especially
more common among those with less socioeconomic resources such as ethnic
minority groups. Without access to income or capital to live independently,
disadvantaged groups may find it more favorable and convenient to pool their
resources and live together.

Manning s conclusion can be extended to the Millennial generation as a whole and
could account for cohabitation differences exhibited by different age groups.
Millennials are widely regarded as having less access to secure jobs and less pay in
an increasingly competitive and uncertain economy; perhaps the widespread lack
socioeconomic resources are preventing younger generations from choosing
marriage over cohabitation. This theory would also explain why cohabitation is
chosen out of convenience: it is more cost effective and allows for conservation of
limited resources. Additionally, large costs of marriages and weddings may be an
economic barrier contributing to marriage s decline.
