Acute pharyngitis, or sore throat, is commonly caused by viruses in 40-60% of cases. Bacteria are the cause in 5-30% of cases, with Group A streptococcus being the most common bacterial cause. The symptoms of acute pharyngitis can range from a mild sore throat to tonsillitis or strep throat. Investigations like throat cultures or rapid antigen tests are not usually needed, as they do not reliably determine the cause or change treatment. Antibiotics are generally not needed for most sore throats but are recommended for confirmed strep throat to prevent rheumatic fever and acute glomerulonephritis.
This document discusses the assessment and management of pharyngitis. It begins with two case studies and outlines the Centor criteria for assessing likelihood of Group A Streptococcus infection. It then covers epidemiology, causes, complications and dangerous conditions to exclude. Investigations and management are discussed, including use of analgesics, steroids and antibiotics. It concludes that most adult pharyngitis is viral, modified Centor criteria can guide antibiotic use, and supportive care is usually sufficient unless high risk factors are present.
This document summarizes various oral manifestations of systemic diseases. It describes acute pharyngitis caused by viruses like rhinovirus or bacteria like streptococcus. It then discusses diphtheritic pharyngitis caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Finally, it provides a detailed overview of oral manifestations of various infectious diseases including herpes, tuberculosis, syphilis, and fungal infections; connective tissue disorders like Sjogren's syndrome and lupus; and other conditions such as oral cancer. The document serves as a comprehensive reference for oral signs of systemic illness.
In recent years, businesses and families have left
Upstate New York in record numbers. Private
sector job losses have devastated our communities.
New York State’s leaders have not shown a
commitment to job creation and economic
development. In fact, our image over the last
decade has been quite the opposite – we have one
of the worst business climates in the nation.
It is beyond dispute that the state’s policies have
contributed to our economic problems by failing
to meet the economic challenges we face. In
many cases, Albany hasn’t just failed to act – state
government has actually adopted policies that have
made our economic situation even worse.
This report takes a hard look at what New York
State has done right since the beginning of 2011,
and what additional steps will address the high cost of doing business in the state.

This document explores how drama can be used as a bridge to help teach multiple literacies. It argues that drama appeals to different learning styles and adheres to models of effective language teaching by embedding words in context through role adoption. Compared to simply reading text, drama allows students to engage in more cognitively demanding tasks like improvisation that develop higher-order thinking skills and multiliteracies. The document examines various theories and frameworks that support how drama performance can help develop language proficiency beyond just comprehension. It suggests drama is a form of literacy itself and that role playing allows students to express real emotions in a safer way than responding to print alone.

A renewed political economy must balance mediation, order, privation, and communication to resolve problems of distribution, temporalities, and order in a post-kantian cosmopolitan way.
This document discusses using machine learning to analyze gut microbiota data to help diagnose and distinguish between ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and healthy individuals. It describes how gut microbiota composition is measured using microarrays, and presents data from a study of 150 patients. Supervised machine learning methods were able to correctly classify cases with 92% specificity for ulcerative colitis, but misclassified some diarrhea-predominant IBS as ulcerative colitis. The document notes that labels in the training data may be incorrect in 10% of cases, requiring semi-supervised methods that can learn from both labeled and unlabeled data.
This document discusses various opportunistic protozoans that can cause disease in humans, including Cryptosporidium, Microsporidia, Cyclospora, and Isospora. It provides details on the morphology, life cycles, transmission, clinical symptoms, and laboratory diagnosis of Cryptosporidium parvum and Isospora belli. It also discusses an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in Milwaukee in 1994 and various human pathogens within the phylum Microspora.

This study aimed to validate an osteocyte-specific growth hormone receptor (GHR) knockout mouse model generated using the Cre/loxP system with Cre recombinase driven by the dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) promoter. The researchers found that while the DMP1-derived Cre mediated GHR knockout specifically in osteocytes as intended, GHR gene recombination was also detected in muscle tissue. They concluded that the DMP1-GHRKO mouse model is valid for studying the role of GHR in osteocytes, but the bone phenotype needs to be characterized with the knowledge that the gene recombination also occurred in muscle.
The document provides an overview of gastrointestinal function and regulation. It discusses the structure of the gastrointestinal tract and major secretions. Hormones, peptides and neurotransmitters regulate gastrointestinal secretions and motility through enteric nervous system pathways. The liver plays an important role through the portal circulation system, which directs intestinal venous outflow to the liver before returning to the heart.
This document outlines various methods for evaluating potential antifertility agents, including:
1. Assessing sex hormones, sperm parameters like motility and morphology, and mating/fertility trials.

The document discusses the gut-brain axis and probiotics. It begins by noting that the gut-brain axis is a complex bidirectional system integrating the host and microbiota. It then provides an overview of the key components of the gut-brain axis, including the neuroanatomical pathways, neuroendocrine pathways, immune pathways, microbiota and metabolism, and intestinal barriers. Several studies are summarized that demonstrate gut-brain axis interactions using germ-free mice models and human evidence from irritable bowel syndrome patients. Finally, emerging clinical studies on probiotics and the gut-brain axis are highlighted, including a functional MRI study showing probiotic consumption can decrease brain reactivity to negative stimuli.
The document summarizes a presentation on the gut-brain axis and probiotics. It provides an overview of the gut-brain axis as an integrative bidirectional system involving the brain, gut microbiota, neuroanatomical pathways, the neuroendocrine HPA axis, the gut immune system, gut microbiota and metabolism, and intestinal and blood-brain barriers. It discusses evidence from preclinical studies using germ-free mice models and human studies such as those linking gut microbiota to HPA axis response and evidence from fMRI studies showing probiotic consumption can decrease brain reactivity to negative stimuli.
THE URINARY PROTEOMICS:A TOOL TODISCOVER NEW AND POTENT BIOMARKERS FORKIDNE...Moustafa Rezk
Urinary proteomics provides a tool to discover new biomarkers for kidney damage. Proteomics is the study of proteomes, which describes the entire protein content of cells and bodily fluids like urine. A major goal is to identify disease biomarkers in urine that can be used for early diagnosis. Urine contains proteins from glomerular filtration and tubular secretion, as well as exosomes containing membrane and intracellular proteins from kidney epithelial cells. Mass spectrometry techniques like CE-MS can analyze the urinary proteome and peptide database to identify biomarkers for conditions like kidney cancer, diabetic nephropathy, and acute transplant rejection.
4. pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of gamithromycinMerial EMEA
Gamithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that demonstrates:
1) Fast and complete absorption within 1 hour of subcutaneous administration.
2) Extensive tissue distribution, particularly in lung tissue, due to ion trapping in acidic environments like macrophages.
3) Concentrations in lung tissue that exceed the MIC for common bacterial pathogens for 10-15 days, providing long-lasting therapeutic levels.
This document discusses various in vitro and in vivo models used to assess gastrointestinal effects of drugs during preclinical testing. It describes models for assessing gastric emptying, intestinal motility, gastric secretion, nausea/emesis, and gastrointestinal absorption. For gastric emptying and motility, in vitro models use stomach and gut tissues in organ baths, while in vivo models use meal markers in rodents. In vitro cell-based and ex vivo tissue models are used to study gastric secretion and damage. Dogs and ferrets are commonly used to evaluate nausea and emesis. The Caco-2 cell model and in situ rat gut preparations are discussed for assessing gastrointestinal absorption.
This document summarizes the key investigations used in diagnosing Crohn's disease. Blood tests can detect anemia, leukocytosis, low serum albumin, and elevated inflammatory markers. Stool samples are examined for fecal calprotectin, which is elevated in inflammatory bowel diseases. Serology tests detect antibodies associated with Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. Endoscopy allows visualization of ulcers and other lesions. Radiology techniques like MRI enterography show inflammation and complications throughout the bowels. Biopsy of lesions can show granulomas or other signs of inflammation useful for diagnosis.
This document contains a template for documenting a patient's case history and physical examination. It includes sections for collecting the patient's personal details and history, including presenting complaints, past medical history, treatment history, and family history. Transcriptional profiling with pathway analysis identifies dysregulated molecular phenotypes in the endometrium of PCOS patients. Several key pathways related to cell cycle, glycolysis, and integrin-Rho cytoskeleton networks are downregulated in the endometrium of PCOS patients. Validation with real-time PCR on laser-captured cell types shows cell-type specific aberrations. The findings suggest impaired proliferation, glucose metabolism, and cell adhesion in the endometrium of PCOS patients.
The document discusses peptic ulcers and gastric tumors. It defines a peptic ulcer and describes the etiology as being related to Helicobacter pylori infection and NSAID use. It discusses the sites of peptic ulcers as the duodenum and stomach. It also summarizes the gross and microscopic morphology of acute and chronic gastric ulcers. For gastric tumors, it classifies the main types and discusses the epidemiology, etiology, morphology, clinical features, investigations, staging, and prognostic markers for gastric carcinoma.
This document discusses methods for assessing drug effects on renal and gastrointestinal systems in safety pharmacology studies. For renal function, in vivo mammalian models using rats and dogs are commonly used to assess glomerular function through clearance tests, tubular function through urine analysis, and hemodynamic function through blood flow measurements. In vitro and in silico models are also discussed. For gastrointestinal function, methods described include assessing gastric emptying and intestinal motility using in vitro tissue/organ baths and in vivo animal models, measuring gastric secretion in cell preparations and ligated rats, modeling nausea and emesis in ferrets and dogs, and measuring absorption in Caco-2 cell cultures and perfused intestinal segments of rats.
This document provides an overview of ulcerative colitis including its definition, causes, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic evaluations, management, complications, and nursing care considerations. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine. It is characterized by periods of remission and relapse of symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Diagnostic evaluations include physical exams, lab tests, stool exams, endoscopies, and imaging. Authoring a personal GPT for your research and practice: How we created the Q...Leonel Morgado
Thematic analysis in qualitative research is a time-consuming and systematic task, typically done using teams. Team members must ground their activities on common understandings of the major concepts underlying the thematic analysis, and define criteria for its development. However, conceptual misunderstandings, equivocations, and lack of adherence to criteria are challenges to the quality and speed of this process. Given the distributed and uncertain nature of this process, we wondered if the tasks in thematic analysis could be supported by readily available artificial intelligence chatbots. Our early efforts point to potential benefits: not just saving time in the coding process but better adherence to criteria and grounding, by increasing triangulation between humans and artificial intelligence. This tutorial will provide a description and demonstration of the process we followed, as two academic researchers, to develop a custom ChatGPT to assist with qualitative coding in the thematic data analysis process of immersive learning accounts in a survey of the academic literature: QUAL-E Immersive Learning Thematic Analysis Helper. In the hands-on time, participants will try out QUAL-E and develop their ideas for their own qualitative coding ChatGPT. Participants that have the paid ChatGPT Plus subscription can create a draft of their assistants. The organizers will provide course materials and slide deck that participants will be able to utilize to continue development of their custom GPT. The paid subscription to ChatGPT Plus is not required to participate in this workshop, just for trying out personal GPTs during it.
The debris of the ‘last major merger’ is dynamically youngSérgio Sacani
The Milky Way’s (MW) inner stellar halo contains an [Fe/H]-rich component with highly eccentric orbits, often referred to as the
‘last major merger.’ Hypotheses for the origin of this component include Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), where the progenitor
collided with the MW proto-disc 8–11 Gyr ago, and the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM), where the progenitor collided with the
MW disc within the last 3 Gyr. These two scenarios make different predictions about observable structure in local phase space,
because the morphology of debris depends on how long it has had to phase mix. The recently identified phase-space folds in Gaia
DR3 have positive caustic velocities, making them fundamentally different than the phase-mixed chevrons found in simulations
at late times. Roughly 20 per cent of the stars in the prograde local stellar halo are associated with the observed caustics. Based
on a simple phase-mixing model, the observed number of caustics are consistent with a merger that occurred 1–2 Gyr ago.
We also compare the observed phase-space distribution to FIRE-2 Latte simulations of GSE-like mergers, using a quantitative
measurement of phase mixing (2D causticality). The observed local phase-space distribution best matches the simulated data
1–2 Gyr after collision, and certainly not later than 3 Gyr. This is further evidence that the progenitor of the ‘last major merger’
did not collide with the MW proto-disc at early times, as is thought for the GSE, but instead collided with the MW disc within
the last few Gyr, consistent with the body of work surrounding the VRM.

The binding of cosmological structures by massless topological defectsSérgio Sacani
Assuming spherical symmetry and weak field, it is shown that if one solves the Poisson equation or the Einstein field
equations sourced by a topological defect, i.e. a singularity of a very specific form, the result is a localized gravitational
field capable of driving flat rotation (i.e. Keplerian circular orbits at a constant speed for all radii) of test masses on a thin
spherical shell without any underlying mass. Moreover, a large-scale structure which exploits this solution by assembling
concentrically a number of such topological defects can establish a flat stellar or galactic rotation curve, and can also deflect
light in the same manner as an equipotential (isothermal) sphere. Thus, the need for dark matter or modified gravity theory is
mitigated, at least in part.
When I was asked to give a companion lecture in support of ‘The Philosophy of Science’ (https://shorturl.at/4pUXz) I decided not to walk through the detail of the many methodologies in order of use. Instead, I chose to employ a long standing, and ongoing, scientific development as an exemplar. And so, I chose the ever evolving story of Thermodynamics as a scientific investigation at its best.
Conducted over a period of >200 years, Thermodynamics R&D, and application, benefitted from the highest levels of professionalism, collaboration, and technical thoroughness. New layers of application, methodology, and practice were made possible by the progressive advance of technology. In turn, this has seen measurement and modelling accuracy continually improved at a micro and macro level.
Perhaps most importantly, Thermodynamics rapidly became a primary tool in the advance of applied science/engineering/technology, spanning micro-tech, to aerospace and cosmology. I can think of no better a story to illustrate the breadth of scientific methodologies and applications at their best.

ESR spectroscopy in liquid food and beverages.pptxPRIYANKA PATEL
With increasing population, people need to rely on packaged food stuffs. Packaging of food materials requires the preservation of food. There are various methods for the treatment of food to preserve them and irradiation treatment of food is one of them. It is the most common and the most harmless method for the food preservation as it does not alter the necessary micronutrients of food materials. Although irradiated food doesn’t cause any harm to the human health but still the quality assessment of food is required to provide consumers with necessary information about the food. ESR spectroscopy is the most sophisticated way to investigate the quality of the food and the free radicals induced during the processing of the food. ESR spin trapping technique is useful for the detection of highly unstable radicals in the food. The antioxidant capability of liquid food and beverages in mainly performed by spin trapping technique.
