Gestures are a form of non-verbal communication that use body movements to express thoughts and feelings. They can be used to describe objects, greet others, direct attention, show agreement or disagreement, and give directions.
Gestures are classified into different types, including iconic gestures that depict shapes and actions, deictic gestures that point to objects and people, and emblems that can stand alone without speech and have culturally-dependent meanings. Descriptive, suggestive, locative, emphatic, and dramatic gestures are also used to aid speech. Manual signs used in sign languages have four components - hand shape, location, movement, and orientation.
