3. GESTURES
◦Gestures refer to the movement of the body
particularly that of the hands and arms to emphasize
or show an emotion, a feeling, or an idea. They are
considered as a form of nonverbal communication in
which a person communicates and conveys his or her
message with or without speech. They differ from
other types of body movements because gestures
usually have a definite linguistic content.
5. ◦1. The Approach - refers
to bringing the arms to
the speaker's intended
direction.
6. ◦2. The Stroke - refers to the giving
of emphasis to an idea. For
example, in the line "Give me
land." The emphasis is on the word
give and this is done by bringing
the arm on the waist level with an
open palm and fingers together.

bringing the arms to the
rest position which is
letting the arms hang
loosely on the side.
8. TYPES OF GESTURES
There are types of gestures that are
commonly used in an oral presentation.
These are emblems, iconic gestures,
metaphoric gestures, regulators, affect
displays, and beat gestures.
9. 1. EMBLEMS
Emblems are gestures with explicit meanings
that are used and understood consciously by
the people. They can take the place of words
just like sign language. These types of
gestures may have entirely different meanings
when used in other countries.
10. ◦. For instance, the hand sign for okay or OK (thumb
to index finger) may mean positive in the United
States, while in France, it means zero. However, in
Japan, it means money.
11. 2. ICONIC GESTURES
Iconic gestures, also known as
illustrators, are descriptive gestures
that are employed to demonstrate
speech. It is like painting a picture
through the use of hands.
12. ◦For example, you would like to show how tall or short
someone is by means of your hands. Using this type of
gesture add details to the mental image of what you are
tying to convey, without the accompanying speech.

◦Metaphoric gestures also referred to
as representational gestures are
helpful especially when explaining an
abstract idea or concept but with
specific shape.

may mean presenting a problem or postponing
an activity sometime in the future can be
indicated by a movement of the hand or
forefinger forward.

◦Regulators are turn taking gestures that are
used when engage Regulators. For example,
persons may put at it arms convey one with
what they are saying and When they are
saying, they may put their arms up as if they
are grasping the way forward.

◦Affect displays are gestures that demonstrate
a person's emotion, when communicating
with others. For instance, covering your
mouth may mean that you do not want to say
it or talk about it. Other on touching or
holding oneself are examples of this type of
gesture

Beat gestures are done through
short taps or rhythmic emphasis
order for the speaker to drive a point
home.
