During the first phase of GEM Risk, several key datasets and tools were developed by the scientific community and made available through GEM. This includes a building taxonomy, exposure models, vulnerability assessment guidelines, and global earthquake consequences and exposure databases that are accessible on the OpenQuake platform. GEM also conducted regional workshops and technical training to facilitate risk assessment collaboration and technology transfer.

Better Hackathon 2020 ETHZ - Comparing Static And Dynamic Effects Of EarthquakesPRBETTER
As part of the final BETTER Hackathon, project partners prepared 4 hackathon exercises. ETHZ organised this exercise as the challenge promoter for the Geohazards thematic area. This open exercise featured the use of Binder and purposely provided cloud resources but could also be run locally through a Docker image and Docker Compose. The focus of this half-day exercise was to find a convenient way of exploitation of Co-seismic interferograms, by using developed BETTER pipelines. The idea was to produce geocoded maps combining automatically the important results to have a convenient visualisation that helps interpreting results.Participants were expected to be familiar with the Jupyter environment (Python 3) and the most common EO libraries (e.g. GDAL). The recorded part includes the introduction of the exercise in the context of the BETTER project.

In December 2014 the US White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) released a Policy Fact Sheet titled "Harnessing Climate Data to Boost Ecosystem & Water Resilience." The Fact Sheet includes OGC’s commitment to increase open access to climate change information using open standards. Testbed 11 results are now available delivering on that commitment.

Space research : space research projects under the 7th framework programme for research (5th call)
Civilisations have always wondered what is beyond the sky. But it is only recently that the limitless possibilities provided by space science and technology came into stronger spotlight and started to be used to the full. The EU has been playing a significant role in this process, in particular through the FP7 space research programme. The 5th FP7 space call brochure – through presentation of 50 projects divided into four categories (Copernicus applications and data; space technologies; space science and data exploitation; cross-cutting issues) – aims at giving a comprehensive overview of Europe's endeavours to fully, yet sustainably, use space for purposes ranging from excellent reception of TV signal to helping victims of earthquakes and other natural disasters
Efficient and thorough data collection and its timely analysis are critical for disaster response and recovery in order to save people's lives during disasters. However, access to comprehensive data in disaster areas and their quick analysis to transform the data to actionable knowledge are challenging. With the popularity and pervasiveness of mobile devices, crowdsourcing data collection and analysis has emerged as an effective and scalable solution. This paper addresses the problem of crowdsourcing mobile videos for disasters by identifying two unique challenges of 1) prioritizing visual data collection and transmission under bandwidth scarcity caused by damaged communication networks and 2) analyzing the acquired data in a timely manner. We introduce a new crowdsourcing framework for acquiring and analyzing the mobile videos utilizing fine granularity spatial metadata of videos for a rapidly changing disaster situation. We also develop an analytical model to quantify the visual awareness of a video based on its metadata and propose the visual awareness maximization problem for acquiring the most relevant data under bandwidth constraints. The collected videos are evenly distributed to off-site analysts to collectively minimize crowdsourcing efforts for analysis. Our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed framework.

Social Vulnerability Datasets through the OpenQuake Platform and Description of a Case-Scenario of Integrated Risk and Resilience using OpenQuake Tools.
The aim of GED4GEM is to build a comprehensive, multi-scale and statistically accurate database of population and buildings, to asses the physical and economic exposure of a given area to earthquakes.
The database will serve to inform users on consequences from past events, as a benchmarking tool for analytical loss models and to support the development of tools to create vulnerability data appropriate to specific countries, structures, or building classes.
