GeestMEDx aims to use AI to monitor social media and online activity to identify at-risk adolescents and young people for mental health issues in the Netherlands. By triangulating multiple data sources, the system could provide early identification of those requiring additional care and support mental health professionals. A feasibility study will examine the technical aspects of using algorithms to analyze digital footprints, as well as issues of data privacy, effectiveness, and public acceptance. The goal is to establish routine mental health surveillance to improve human rights, reduce the economic impact of mental illness, and allow early intervention opportunities.

Public Summary
Governments and organizations need to identify adolescent and young populations vulnerable to ill mental
health at earlier stages to assist in overall recovery and well-being, especially as they start to exhibit detrimental
behaviors that will negatively impact their lives and society at large.
GeestMEDx aims to use ethical AI to monitor mental health and wellbeing to meet the UN’s SDG by 2030. We
will use complementary data sources to identify people at risk, people who require additional care. The use of

actively using social media and an average
of 1h24 spent daily on social media. 17.9%
of the Dutch population tracked their screen
time and set limits on some apps, showing
that the Dutch people are invested and
concerned about their mental wellbeing and
health.
Physical, mental, and social sides of health
are interrelated, and improvements in
physical health will impact mental
health and vice versa. Depression is
one of the leading causes of
debilitation caused by a mental
disorder. Suicide is the second
leading cause of death among
15-29-year-olds.
More than 4 in 10 people have had
one or more mental illnesses in their
lifetime. Globally, it is estimated that
5.0% of adults suffer from mental
health as a share of the total disease
burden. In contrast, the Netherlands
is estimated at 8%.
Post-COVID19 is a crucial trigger to
implement and invest in mental
health surveillance and support because the pandemic has had unprecedented consequences on people, family
structures, and the younger generation ready to hit the job market.
The prevention of suicide has not been adequately addressed in NL due to a lack of awareness of suicide as a
significant public health problem and the taboo to discuss openly. Improved surveillance and monitoring of
suicide and suicide attempts are required for effective suicide prevention strategies. We started the GeestMEDx
initiative because Diagnosing mental illness is an inexact science that could be improved with the addition of
more data sources. The idea is to triangulate mental health because mental health is an exercise that can’t just
rely on one single tool, and since social media provides a continuous record of a person’s thoughts and actions
across a substantial period of time, it could give a less skewed impression of a patient’s mental state. Potentially
over 8.5 hours of personal data is accumulated every week for every social media user. This publicly available
data could provide more tailored and enhanced patient support that we aim to use in an anonymized way.

tracking of user location activity, a vast amount of data is transcribed to augment
our everyday lives without our conscious attention. We truly are living in a digital
age. Many companies have tried to use the data sets to support and predict the

attempted, but none scaled their solution) MEDx proposes the application of artificial intelligence to actively
monitor social media platforms in an anonymized way to safeguard the mental health and wellbeing of Dutch
citizens. User posts, social media activity, and device activity can be monitored via AI algorithms to create a
system that can monitor, assess, and intervene in possible episodes of ill mental health with lower consumption
of human resources. This project can prove to benefit both consumers and practitioners. The feasibility study
will investigate the effectiveness and best formula of Algorithms to be utilized to improve overall monitoring of
mental healthcare among citizens aged 15- 29.
C. Economic Perspective
Overall, the research will initially be applied to the Dutch population and phased to the wider European
demographic in case of success in the initial pilot country (The Netherlands). MEDx has had pre-COVID and
has currently driven its strategy around GOVTECH projects across the globe. We have a healthcare
background, and our three critical partners from Academia (Fontys, Fruit Punch, and ESPI) will bring AI and
Metaverse capabilities to the table. We have teamed up with all three organizations in the past, and this will help
pick up from December quickly. Many of our competitors have not approached the solution from the
perspective we aim to get into (to be validated via feasibility). We are a small and flexible company compared to
the giant organization in space. A national strategy and approach to this challenge will set us apart and deliver a
first of its kind in terms of PPP for mental health.
