Gay Rights Essays
Writing an essay on the topic of "Gay Rights" can be both challenging and rewarding. The
complexity arises from the multifaceted nature of the subject, which encompasses legal, social,
cultural, and historical dimensions. Crafting a well-informed and persuasive essay requires a
thorough understanding of the various aspects of gay rights, including the ongoing struggles for
equality, the evolution of legal frameworks, and the societal attitudes towards the LGBTQ+
community.
One of the difficulties lies in navigating the diverse perspectives on this topic. There are varying
opinions, beliefs, and values related to gay rights, making it crucial for the writer to present a
balanced view that respects different viewpoints while advocating for inclusivity and equality.
This task involves conducting extensive research to gather credible information and staying
updated on the latest developments in the field.
Additionally, addressing the emotional and personal aspects of the topic requires a delicate
approach. It involves empathetically exploring the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community,
acknowledging their challenges, and highlighting the importance of acceptance and
understanding. Striking the right balance between facts, empathy, and persuasive arguments is
essential to create a compelling and impactful essay.
Furthermore, the ever-evolving nature of the discourse surrounding gay rights adds another layer
of complexity. Staying abreast of legal changes, social movements, and emerging perspectives is
crucial for providing an up-to-date and relevant analysis. This demands continuous research and
adaptation to ensure the essay remains current and reflective of the contemporary landscape.
In conclusion, while writing an essay on gay rights can be challenging, it offers an opportunity to
contribute to an important dialogue. Success in crafting such an essay requires a combination of
research skills, empathy, and the ability to navigate diverse perspectives. The end result, however,
has the potential to contribute positively to the ongoing conversation about equality and human
rights.

Position Paper For The World Health Organization
Position Paper for the World Health Organization
The topics before the World Health Organization (WHO) are: Climate Change and
Health, and Global Burden of Mental Disorders and the Need for a Comprehensive,
Coordinated Response from Health and Social Sectors at the Country Level. The
United States of America expresses concern for these issues and is looking forward to
collaborating with Member States to find adequate and long lasting solutions.
I. Climate Change and Health
The United States of America acknowledges the threat climate change poses to health
and stresses the importance of strengthening health systems to manage adverse
outcomes. Through the Sustainable and Climate Resilient Health Care Facilities
Initiative (SCRHCFI), the U.S. has provided tools and information to health officials
to better prepare for natural disasters. The Climate Ready States and Cities Initiative
(CRSCI) has funded 18 state and local health departments to improve the capacity of
vulnerable communities to deal with health challenges associated with climate
change. In 2013, we created the Climate Action Plan (CAP) with the goals of cutting
carbon pollution in America and improving climate resilience at the state and local
level. Since then, the U.S. has expanded the goals to reach a global scale and by
partnering bilaterally with India, we have invested $125 million towards advancing
clean energy. Additionally, The United States has taken action through initiatives

Thomas Pikety s Capital In The Twenty-First Century
In the article, Capital in the Twenty First Century by Thomas Piketty, Piketty explains
the history of unstable and stable periods of economic equality and inequality in the
world. His theory central contradiction of capitalism explains the rate of wealth
coming out of the economy is greater than the economy itself. As a result, wealth
becomes more divided and the inequality grows between the distributions of the
wealth. Piketty proposes a global tax to equalize the current economic wealth, but the
way he measured this wealth was flawed. Piketty, in the article, never distinguished
the difference between what wealth is and what capital. He misrepresented wealth by
only using estate tax returns to study changes in the inequality of wealth

Question 2. How would you describe Louis Gerstner s implementation style of IBM
s competitive strategy in the early 1990s? In my opinion, Louis Gerstner s was a
brilliant strategist which turn the table around for IBM. A successful strategist are
people who can gain better understanding and critically analyze the situation and
able to develop strategies to match their competitors. As the CEO of IBM, first thing
Louis does was to perform a corporate appraisal of the company. Corporate appraisal
is a process where company review their entire organization to gain an understanding
of its readiness to interact successfully with the external environment in which it
operates and develop the best strategies to stay competitive in the market (Jain,S.C. et
all, 2012).
There are five areas in corporate appraisal. There are categorized senior
management, corporate culture, corporate publics, corporate resources and review of
past performance (Jain,S.C. et all, 2012). After performing the corporate appraisal,
Louis discovered that the cost were excessive, lose touch with the customers,
organization structure was too decentralized and bureaucratic and stayed with their
old strategy for too long therefore caused IBM to be losing out in the current
competitive market (Jain,S.C. et all, 2012). First of all, Louis realizes that the market

Main Tenets Of Confucianism
Confucianism began around 2500 years ago in China as the moral and political
ideologies and philosophies of Kong Fuzi, known in the west as Confucius.
Confucius believed there was a mandate from Heaven that we should spend our
lives seeking knowledge and self improvement not only for the benefit of ourselves,
but also for society as a whole. As the individual strives to lead a life in the
Confucian way, it radiates outward from self to family, friends, society, and the world
in general. Confucianismis not a theistic religion as it does not have deities, but it
does support ritualistic honoring of deceased ancestors and does have a concept of
heaven. Confuciusis not considered a god, but one who exerts considerable influence
from where he can no longer be seen. The main tenets of Confucianism include a
lifelong commitment to self improvement and knowledge and the outward expression
of that knowledge in honorable deeds and acts that encourage like behavior in others.
At the heart of Confucianism is the concept of Ren/Jen. This translates as
humaneness, or benevolence between people. It suggests that behavior toward others
comes from within, or as often said, from the heart. Confucianism does not
encourage people to seek solitude or isolation as a pathway to heaven like some other
religions, but instead strongly encourages close societal bonds. This innate
connection begins with family, the core of society. Confucius believed that humans
are born with empathy and a sense of
Julius Caesar Is To Blame
Julius Caesar is a leader who rose to power due to the fact of the counsel and the
senate never meeting eye to eye.The reason to why there was a senate and counsel
was to create a new government so a single ruler like the Tarquins wouldn t occur
again.Julius Caesar was a part of a triumvirate but Caesar became a dictator. The
Senate disliked him since they didn t know how long he would rule and the fear of
him being corrupted which lead to the death of Julius Caesar.Shakespeare wrote
Julius Caesar based on the life of Julius Caesar to show how being ambitious can
lead to one s death. The Senate became conspirators who believed that Caesar being
in power would lead to corruption and an oppressive leader and government like
the Tarquins so they planned to kill him .Cassius,Brutus,Casca and etc were
involved in the death of Caesar.Although some may say that Brutus is to be blamed
for the death of Caesar since because Caesar let go when Brutus came due to the
betrayal of their relationship and doubting Caesar s ability to rule Rome, ultimately
Caesar is to blame because he is

Benjamin Franklin and His impact on American History
Essay
Benjamin Franklin was one of the most successful founding fathers of our nation and
helped establish American independence from Great Britain. He was a key member
in the development of the political backbone that has shaped this country into what it
is today. Benjamin Franklin was one of the most humble and inspirational figures of
that time. He was a major factor in the outcome of the war of Independence and in his
selfless actions of leaving his family, won the help from the French to assist America
in the fight against England. Although Benjamin Franklinnever made it to be
president he was a leader among his peers. He invented many things that we still use
today such as the library, bifocals, and the postal service. He helped... Show more

So young Benjamin used a false name and slid them under the factory s door at night
to get them published. After relations with his brother got sour he left Boston and
moved to New York then to Philadelphia. He worked in Philadelphia for sometime
then left to London in hopes to secure his own printing shop. After plans fell
through and being very short on cash, he decided to stay in London until he was
able to pay his way home. When he returned he got married to Deborah Reads, girl
he met and fell in love with many years earlier. He worked in many other printing
shops publishing his works until his career really took a turn for the better when
he joined the Free Masons. He was elected the leader very shortly after. During this
time he wrote the agreement for the Library Company of Philadelphia and this
became the first public library in America. After his establishment of the first
public library his role as a founder and leader started to take shape. He quickly
became the president and the secretary of the library to ensure its success. At this
time Ben Franklin was looking for ways to improve the nation. His next big
improvement was the Union Fire company organized in 1734 which became the
nation s first Fire Department. The fire department that he developed made a
significant impact on the city of Philadelphia. This also sparked the idea of having
night watchmen to watch the city during the hours of darkness. Ben s expert

The Manhattan Project Essay
The Atomic Bomb
The research for the first Atomic bomb took place in the United States, by a group
of nuclear engineers; the name of this research was called, The Manhattan Project .
On July 16, 1945, the detonation of the first atomic bomb was tested near Los
Alamos, New Mexico. As the atomic bomb was detonated, it sent shock waves across
the globe, which demonstrated that nuclear power would forever change the meaning
of war. To create a nuclear bomb, nuclear fissionmust occur. The process of nuclear
fission was splitting the nucleus of an atom. Splitting an atom was caused by
neutrons firing through one atom and then that atom s neutrons shoot off into other
atoms, starting a chain reaction. In October of 1934, Enrico Fermi, and ... Show more

Oppenheimer had named the first tested nuclear explosion Trinity . This test was for
the implosion design plutonium bomb, which had the same design as Fat Man,
dropped on Nagasaki. After the successful testing of Trinity, Oppenheimer quoted
from the Bhagavad Gita, If radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into
the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one. Now I am become Death,
the destroyer of worlds. Leo Szilard was a Hungarian Physicist who dedicated
himself to learning how to create a successful chain reaction to make an atomic bomb
before the Germans had a chance to do so. Szilard convinced Albert Einstein to help
research with him on how to create an atomic bomb. The Einstein Szilard letter, sent
to President Franklin D. Roosevelt led to the foundation of research into nuclear
fission by the United States government. This ultimately encouraged the development
of the program, the Manhattan Project. Albert Einstein wrote a letter to the Belgian
Ambassador to stop selling uranium to the Germans so they could slow their
progress on the atomic bomb. He also wrote a letter to President Roosevelt
announcing the importance of the United States to create the bomb before other
countries. Other than writing and signing letters, Einstein himself did not play a role
in developing the atomic bomb. Enrico Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in
Physics in 1938 for his work
Queen Elizabeth I Take Over England
As we are nearing the end of 1559 and the beginning of 1560, Queen Elizabeth has
taken over England after the death of Queen Mary I. Queen Mary I was second in
line for the throne after the death of King Edward VI, son of Jane Seymour (Smith).
Queen Elizabeth I is the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII s
second wife). During the reign of King Edward IV, England was Protestant (Smith).
When Queen Mary I took over, after the death of Edward VI in 1553, she attempted to
turn the country back into Roman Catholicism, which led to the death of hundreds of
Protestant leaders (Commire). After the death of Queen Mary I in 1558, Queen
Elizabeth I now reigns over England. Queen Elizabeth then turned England back into
Protestant, letting
2-Methylbutane Lab
In this lab, concentrated HCl was added to 2 methyl 2 butanol in a separatory
funnel. The reactants were shaken to help the reaction occur quickly. The
separatory funnel was vented several times, to reduce pressure that resulted from
the reaction which was due to the high vapor pressure of HCl. The Hydrochloric
acid will dissociate, and the H+ will react with the OH C to form H2O C. The H2O
is a good leaving group. As the LG is on a tertiary carbon, an Sn1 reaction should
occur. In the rate determining step, the water will leave, to produce a tertiary
carbocation. In the second (fast) step, the Cl nucleophile from the dissociated HCl
will attack the carbocation and 2 chloro 2 mehtylbutane forms. In this reaction,
some E1 also occurs; however, HCl will react with the product of E1 to produce the
2 chloro 2 methylbutane product. In the lab, after the reaction occurred, the product
needed to be purified as excess HCl was used and still remained. To purify the
product, a series of reactions were completed.... Show more content on

The percent recovery was calculated by finding the moles of the initial and final
products. The moles of the initial product were found by multiplying the volume
used by the density of 2 methyl 2 butanol, and then dividing by the molar mass.
The percent recovery was good, showing few errors were made and that the lab
went as expected. To improve the recovery, the extractions could be done even
more carefully. To analyze the purity of the product, an IR test was run. 2 methyl 2
butanol has a large OH peak; 2 chloro 2 butane does not, but otherwise looks quite
similar. The main peak on 2 chloro 2 butane is a C Cl peak; however, this peak is
not revealed with this IR machine, so it could not be analyzed. The IR chart for the
experimental product did not have the OH peak and looked like the theoretical IR
chart, meaning it was dry and that the desired product had been

football games the cheerleaders and the coach talked and told us, We did a good job
at cheering . Cheerleading was a lot of fun I learned to be a nicer person to people and
to help them if they need it.
The coach told all of us that, We all work better together than not being together
because we were all better together than doing stuff on our own.
At the Practices the cheerleaders did a lot of cheering and stunting.
The coach told us, To never get down on ourselves and to just do our best .

The Humanistic Theory And The Kubler-Ross Five Stage
Grief...
This essay looks to explain how both the Humanistic theory and the Kubler ross
five stage grief model can be applied to the loss of a limb. It will also be looking at
how these theories can help the healthcare team in their care provision.
The loss of a limb is a great loss to a person and would be difficult for anyone to
comprehend initially and some never can. It affects all areas of a person s life from
the obvious physical aspect to mentally/emotionally. Apart from losing a limb they
must comprehend the reason why they had a limb amputated, for example through
disease or trauma (Healio,2002). The humanistic theory, particularly the work of Carl
Rogers and Abraham Maslow, has been a great breakthrough within psychology,
especially when looking at the emotions, thoughts and behaviour of an amputee.
Unlike other psychological theories the humanistic theory aims to look at a person
s feelings and to see life as they see it rather than from the perspective of an
observer(Mcleod,2015). According to Roger s humanistic theory, every person
has the built in drive and ability to be the best that they can be. This means to self
actualise. To achieve self actualisation a person needs a high self concept which the
theory explains has three main components. These are self image, self esteem and
ideal self (McLeod, 2014). The loss of a limb affects a person s self concept. The loss
of a limb may make a person feel no longer attractive and deserving of any forms of
attention. As their
Dolores Huerta
Latina Leader
For thousands of years immigration to the United States has been considered one
of the biggest problems and has been one of the topics most talked about, especially
in this year, being one of the favorite topics to talk about in the presidential debates.
Yet, due to speeches given by President Donald Trump little is known and talked
about the problems immigrants, especially Latinos face day by day, socially and
economically. By being a minority in the United States it has been very difficult for
immigrant farm workers to get where they are now and have more opportunities than
before the 1970s. Fortunately, there have been organizations and leaders that have
helped immigrants through the years, one of these being Dolores Huerta. ... Show

Socially Huerta fought against discrimination and racism against Latinos, but she did
not only help the Latino community, but she also helped fight for women s rights.
Although there hasn t been a complete elimination discrimination against minorities
and women in the whole country there has been a big improvement. It was while
she was working in New York, where she met feminist Gloria Steinem, who
inspired her to start a feminist movement (Dolores Huerta). Another big social
change is that Latinos became more involved in politics each year. Especially in
this year s elections Latinos have proved to have a big influence in state politics as
their power have boosted the concentration on the Democratic side as 22 out of 24
are democratic (Los Angeles Times). Now in days Dolores Huerta has continued to
influence politicians and organizations to continue helping the Latino/immigrant
community. One of these being the U visa program which has helped to encourage
more than 2000 immigrants that have suffered from domestic violence to report
these crimes without having to fear that they will be deported (Kaitlyn Schallhorn).
Politicians such as Jerry Brown in California have also helped the Latino community
by providing $ 176.6 million to fix and clean houses (California Latino Legislative).
Dolores Huerta has not taken for granted as shown by today and the previous year,
her legacy continues as she herself countess helping the Latino community. Creating
the United Farm Workers association and helping pass the Agricultural relation acts
as being without a doubt one of the most and significant things that Dolores has done
to help the immigrant and Latino community
Ethical Issues In The Movie The Insider
The movie The Insider portrays what one man was willing to give up to provide
the public with beneficial information. Dr. Jeffrey Wigand left his work in
healthcare for a job with a tobacco firm, Brown Williamson, to help develop a safer
cigarette. The safer cigarette was a public image stunt and Wigand was removed
from those efforts to research on cigarette additives. Wigand discovered additives
used to improve flavor caused cancer and took the information to the executives, to
have the additive removed. The executives declined the request and Wigand was fired
from Brown Williamson. Knowing Wigand had the aforementioned knowledge and
other proprietary information, including the addictive nature of nicotine, Wigand was

threatening behavior of Brown Williamson and inevitable lawsuits with them.
Wigand would have broken the confidentiality agreement and in turn would lose
benefits, which is not ideal for anyone, but Wigand s daughter required daily medical
attention related to spina bifada. The employees that worked in the tobacco
industries would be affected and Wigand would take this into account. If he didn t

scrutiny or job loss. If Wigand didn t tell he would have guilt and the public would
continue to be harmed by the tobacco products. Wigand realized the benefit to the
public outweighed the cost his family and the tobacco employees would
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
Step ONE: There are several diseases that will put a healthcare provider at risk.
Healthcare providers are often worried of getting dirty needle sticks and contracting
a disease such as Hepatitis or HIV. Not only are Health care providers are being
precautious towards dirty needle sticks, but are also precautious towards staph
bacteriasuch as Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Patients who
have MRSA are resistant to different antibiotics in which cause health problems.
MRSA affects healthcare providers and anyone who comes in direct contact with the
infected person or anyone who touches items with the bacteria that causes staph. It is
mainly a skin infection but it could also affect the lungs, blood, heart, bones or joints.

When the physician or other healthcare goes into the room they wear certain
protective gear. To prevent the spread of MRSA amongst children s sports it is
best advisable to properly cover and dress any cuts and or scrapes. To prevent the
spread of MRSA within child day care it is best cover and any wounds that happen
during the day care and to teach students proper hand washing techniques. I agree
with the preventative measures each facility takes to prepare themselves against a
person with MRSA and to prevent the disease. It is very common to contract the
disease while working in a healthcare environment so I agree with isolating the
patient and use the proper protective equipment each time a worker goes into the
patient s room. Step FOUR: There are different topics regarding the contraction of
MRSA. One of those topics states that boys are more susceptible to acquire such
disease than girls. Circumcised boys are twice as susceptible as any other boy. This
statement increases the preoccupation of parents to whether they should or shouldn t
circumcise their infant boy. If a child acquires MRSA he or she can return to school
unless otherwise instructed from a
Why We Should Keep The Consent Age
Keep your mouth shut or I can make this a whole lot worse, the rapist told her right
before the attack. Rape is at crisis levels; ordinary boys and men commit rape and
other violence against women. The normalization of sex and pornography make it
acceptable for boys to see women as sexual objects. The United States should keep
the same age for consent and focus more on educating teenagers about responsible
and safe sex practices or raising the consent age.
One out of three girls will be raped by the age of 18 and one out of 12 girls will end
up committing suicide by the age of 24 from dealing with the attack. It is surprising
that there is that amount of rapes that occur before the age of 18 (Ridinger 1). Out of

Rape prosecutions are argued by the state, not just the victim (Friedman 1). Since
rape is such a traumatic experience, there can be long lasting psychological effects
such as, feeling of intense shame, fear, rage, strong distrust of men or be unable to

sexual development in girl children, which can lead to cognitive performance, and
this can last for years (Gale 2). Really! Are you that stupid? What were you

Drug Cartel Control in Columbia
The situation between government agencies and the drug cartels in Mexico is
similar to the one in Colombia 20 years ago. As I have previously said, throughout
the 1990s the Cali and Medellin drug cartels dominated the world cocaine trade. Both
cartels were made up of several different drug trafficking organizations, each
containing its own specific organizational structure. These cartels hid their cocaine
production labs in remote, jungle regions, where Colombian insurgent groups
provided them cover. In exchange for this cover, rebel groups such as the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombiaderived much of their funding from the
cartels. The cartels were also strong advocates toward bribing. Whether it is police,
judges, or politicians, those who did not agree to the varying bribes were often
threatened and held captive. Looking back, the situation regarding the drug cartels in
Colombia seemed daunting and undefeatable. Colombia was on the verge of political
and economic failure due to the two quasi military drug cartels increasing the rates of
political violence, criminality, and the national homicide rate. During a recent Rand
report on Colombia draws a relationship between the Colombian drug trade and
violence: Current instability in Colombia derives from the interaction and resulting
synergies stemming from two distinct tendencies: the development of an underground
criminal drug economy and the growth of armed challenges to the state s authority...

The Historical Context Of Nursing
Nursing was not always seen as a profession, therefore it is important to explore
what a profession is and its historical context related to nursing. Turkoski (1995)
states that profession is a social construct that was determined by a male worldview;
only men were allowed to have professions. Over time the concept of professionhas
moved beyond the gender divide and established a set of criteria that are non
gender specific. RNABC (as cited in Northrup et al, 2004) listed attributes that
explained how nurses were a profession. These attributes are, responsibility and
accountability to the public, have own body of knowledge, bound by a code
ethics, provide a service to the public and is self regulating. However, education is
missing from the RNABC standards of professional development, according the
Merriam Websters dictionary (2015) a profession is, a type of job that requires
special education, training or skill and requires specialized knowledge. Bluhm
(2014) adds that it is the specialized training that allows someone to be called a
nurse. Ten Hoeve, Jansen and Roodbol (2014) agree that education and
development of knowledge is the reason why nursing was raised to the professional
status. It is this knowledge development that has helped shaped what nursing is
today, and has allowed nurses to share a common worldview. Worldviews
(paradigms) frame global assumptions for vocabulary, theories and principles to
direct the development of ideas for a domain (Duff, 2011
The Thin Blue Line Analysis
For the class CJ ST 410x we have examined capital punishment to determine
whether it is constitutional or not, along with what forms may be considered
acceptable, and how to prevent wrongful convictions so that innocent people are not
getting executed. Now in the examination of a documentary that focuses on a
capital case, we should figure out how the views of this movie may agree or
disagree with what we have learnt from the textbook. For this, I watched the 1988
documentary, The Thin Blue Line, by Errol Morris. This film depicts a man who
was wrongfully convicted of a murderin Texas, and nearly faced death. In October
1976, two brothers decided to leave their home state of Ohio to travel to California.
The brothers ended up in Dallas, TX, the next day 28 year old Randall Adams was
offered a job which he accepted. Adams was to start work the following Saturday,
however upon arriving, nobody was there because it was a weekend. He then
turned around to go home, but on his way back home his car ran out of gasoline. On
the roadside, in an inoperable vehicle, 16 year old David Ray Harris would offer
Adams a ride, which he accepts.
Adams had no clue that Harris had stolen this vehicle from his neighbor in Vidor, TX
and that he was carrying a pistol which belonged to his father and a ... Show more

Some readings from the textbook mention how execution should only be used for the
most dangerous offenders who will likely be a safety risk to others within society
and within the prison. Those who will likely not be a risk to others, should receive
lesser sentences, such as LWOP. The documentary though, presented a one sentence
option, no others. There was no justified reason in attempting to execute Adams.
They could have given Harris a LWOP sentence, but because he wasn t death eligible,
they had no interest in him, which shows misconduct on the prosecutions side of the
Brain Symbolism
The symbolism of the heart being related to the brain I feel is very unlikely. Although
studies have shown that in recent research of the heart they have found little details
on how they have discovered little neutrons and protons and nerve cells that can relate
to the brain making it more believable that the heart is much more than just another
organ. The heart does not only just pump blood but they also think the heart can
transplant memories from the donor s past experiences. The symbolism of the heart
is a tricky thing to describe and relate to the brainas the human body is more complex
than we could have ever thought. When it comes down to the emotions, feelings, and
memories people say they have experienced is where the controversy

What Is A Tent Foot
What is a tent foot? What you need to know.
Have you ever struggled to understand what a tent footprint is? Or have you ever
struggled to understand why people need tent foots?
We ll I m here to answer that. I think that it is important to know what a tent foot is
because it is such a useful tool when camping, that it can save the underneath of your
tent from damage while you are camping.
So what is a tent footprint, really?
Think of a tent footprint like the foundation of the tent. What this tent foot does is it
protects the underneath of your tent from any wear and tear.
Normally, tent foot s come attached to the tent itself so you don t necessarily have to
worry about buying a new one. However, many tents are waterproof underneath. ...

Believe it or not, when you are doing the tossing and turning, you are causing
abrasions on the ground material of the tent.
Over time, the friction from those abrasions will tear the underneath of the tent apart.
Are there any other uses for the tent foot?
Tent footprints can be used as a form of insulation underneath your tent. When the
tent foot is underneath your tent, the tent foot will trap warm air underneath your tent
to provide you warmth for as long as possible.
The tent footprint also makes sure that packing up the tent is as easy as possible.
Since the tent itself will be on top of the tent footprint, the tent will stay dry
underneath. That means that you don t have to spend as much time cleaning the tent
before packing up.
One other way that tent footprints can help, other than protecting the tent from
damage, is by helping you place your corners of the tent. When you buy your tent, the
tent foot will nearly be the exact dimension as the tent footprint.
As for the waterproofing; just because some tents are waterproof, doesn t mean that a
tent footprint cannot add an extra waterproofing layer underneath the tent. It is
generally a good idea to have as many extra layers of water
PCB Contamination Controversy
The Bloomington area has numerous locations of PCB contamination, Monroe
County has declared three sites; Lemon Lane Landfill, Neal s Landfill, and Bennett
Stone Quarry. Although, there are many other sites including the Illinois Central
/Quarry Springs, Winston Thomas Sewage Treatment Plant and surrounding areas.
These areas include where residents received PCB contaminated sludge in their yards
since they were being told it was organic sewage sludge from the Winston Thomas
Treatment Plant according to Linda Greene from the Bloomington Environmental
Health Project (Greene, 1995). Officials determined that Bloomington will not be free
from toxic industrial compounds for a minimum 30 years even with the great cleanup
that has led to the abstraction of most of the ground level contamination according to
Sehvilla Mann from the Indiana Public Media 2013. As you can imagine there are

The residents did not take this well as it eventually led to the creation of Citizens
Opposed to PCB Ash, or COPA. The citizens were not opposed to the cleanup but
rather how they intended to resolve the PCB issue which was to burn the PCBs,
which would release an abundance of toxic chemicals into the environment, and
possibly even worsening the situation. In the early 1990s opponents of this method
convinced the Indiana Assembly to pass certain emission benchmarks that the
incinerators could not oblige by. Now as to why there was opposition to this
contamination, several Westinghouse employees have 100 times higher level of PCB

from the several health concerns and pollution caused by PCB
Pathophysiology Of Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a disorder where drinking alcohol is the primary issue; the
pathophysiology includes the nerves system and its ability to transmit electrical
activity. It affects several neurotransmitters in the brain, including opiates, GABA,
glutamate, serotonin, and dopamine. Increased opiate levels help explain the
euphoric effect of alcohol, while its effects on GABA cause anxiolytic and sedative
effects (Thompson 2014). Addictive disorder is differed as: an intense craving for
the substance and an excessive amount of time is spent trying to procure more of the
substance or recover from the effects of its use. Use of the substance causes problems
with interpersonal relationships, and the individual may become socially isolated.

Women In A Scandal In Bohemia And King Solomon s Mines
In both Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s, A Scandal in Bohemia (1891), and H. Rider
Haggard s, King Solomon s Mines (1885), male figures utilize the femme fatale image
of the monstrous feminine to concretize or reaffirm views of a dominant patriarchal
power (OED). Specifically, characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Allan
Quartermain, subsequently attempt to debase the influences of female manipulation
and superiority. The expression of this thematic trend occurs primarily through the
tension of ignorance versus insight, and the recurring images of dehumanization. As
such, these tropes express within each text the attempts of men to degrade women s
inherent authority.
When considering Irene Adler, from A Scandal in Bohemia, and Gagool, from King
Solomon s Mines, the tension of ignorance versus insight is essential in preliminarily
introducing the characters position within the femme fatale role. Just as a femme
fatale is by definition a woman, who destabilizes male control, both Adler and
Gagool use their exclusive access to information to subvert male desires and
boundaries of class (OED). For instance, Irene Adler exploits her possession of
compromising letters and photographs to blackmail the King of Bohemia and so, ruin
(him) by jeopardizing his marriage to another woman (Doyle, A Scandal in Bohemia).
Thereby, she exemplifies the image of the femme fatale by threatening the monarchy
s stability with issues of scandal while, alternately, ensuring that her

My dream has been to travel around the world to enlighten myself on global food
and culture. Ironically, I never leave the house and live off of instant ramen
noodles. I m also extremely passionate about creating a positive impact on people s
lives, so I went to Haiti, got a chronic rash, and temporarily turned into the biggest
bitch EVER. I have divorced parents, and quite frankly, it would be weird if it were
any different. I love my family, particularly because we are all distinctly unique.
My older sister, Alex, collects crystals and has an obsession with serial killers and
Broadway musicals. Nicky, my younger brother, has anger management issues and
is in a taking a selfie while looking at himself in a mirror phase. Luckily, I am over
the selfie phase, but still working on my anger management issues. I was also
brought up by the coolest mom ever, who thinks she was Indian in her past life.
Who am I? I am my family, I am my experiences, I am a rad girl, and according to
my mother during my bitch phase, my rashdoes not define me. My name is
Madeline Ley, and I will not sugar coat a single thing. Just to get this over with, I
ve hated the name Mimi ever since someone called it stupid after he asked me to
sign his yearbook in the second grade. My once nickname turned name, Mimi, is
Alex s fault, because she couldn t pronounce Madeline when I was born. I spent my
first few years on earth, hungry and angry. I had a growth in my mouth, and I also

H Algebra 2A

A triangular number is a number that counts the amount of objects that form when
they are put together to form an equilateral triangle (a triangle with all equal sides).
The most common object used to form a triangle are dots. When the dots create an
equilateral triangle, the number of dots seen in the triangle represent the triangular
number. Overall, the sequence is generated from a pattern of dots which form a
triangle.
The first row contains a single dot and each subsequent row contains more dots than
the previous one. The sequence of triangular numbers are: 1, 3, 6,10, 15, 21... and so
on.
When working with multiple triangles, each triangle is assigned a triangle number.
For example, triangle one (T1) has a triangular number of one. Triangle three has a
triangular number of six. The letter T, followed but a number represents a certain
triangle.
The formula to calculate the amount of object using a stated length is:
Tn(th)= n(n+1) 2
T represents triangle number. N represents the length of the three sides of the
equilateral triangle. If a number (and only whole numbers) were plugged in for N.
The final answer of the problem would equal the number objects (dots) in the
equilateral triangle.
Example: n= length of 6Formula: Tnth= n(n+1) 2
Plug in 6 for n. T6th=6(6+1) 2
Solve.T6th= 6(7)T6th=42T6th=21. 22

Compare And Contrast Anne Bradstreet And Upon The
Burning...
In the 16th and 17th century the Puritan authors wrote poems and sermons that
reflected their Puritan beliefs. They did this in attempt to impact their audience. The
question asked is were one too Puritan, or was one not Puritan enough? Does one
author s beliefs run counter to the other, or are they almost identical with a different
approach? Within the two works I have contextualized, I confirmed that both authors
are Puritanalthough they vary in tone and tactic to declare her point.
To begin, in 1609 Anne Bradstreet wrote the poem Upon the Burning of our House .
In this poem Bradstreet depicts a woman losing her house and husband , along with
other things she treasured, to fire. According to the poem, Bradstreet says, And to my
God my heart did cry/To straighten me in my distress/And not to leave me
succourless. (8 9) This evidence illuminates that Bradstreet s character has a solid
relationship with God and she takes solace in the fact that he will relieve her from
all of her stress. In addition, Bradstreet says I blest His name that gave and took
(Bradstreet 14) To elucidate, the woman in the poem is secure with her belief of
God. She embraces and respects God s decision to punish her, knowing that he will
take care of her after her life on Earth. To add on, Bradstreet also states, And did thy
wealth on Earth abide? / Didst fix thy hope on mound ring dust? / To arm of flesh
didst make thy trust? (38 40) To elaborate, Bradstreet is conveying this woman

The Most Successful Treatment Today For Depression
Suicide is a growing problem around the world and is the third leading cause of
death. Statistics show the seriousness of the situation. According to W.H.O. (World
Health Organization) and C.D.C. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), over
800,000 people die by suicide every year with 42,773 being Americans. The National
Alliance on Mental Illness says the leading cause of people committing suicideis
untreated depression, but only half of all Americans experiencing an episode of
major depression receive treatment ( Causes ). The most successful treatment today
for depression is therapy and/or prescript ed medication. The other common causes of
suicide are other mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, postpartum
depression, PTSD, or others similar. Today, it is a constant battle to find ways to
prevent suicide more efficiently. To break down why people commit suicide, in a
social aspect, sociologist David Emile Durkheim, broke it into four different terms
of situations that are called: egoistic, altruistic, anomic, and fatalistic. Durkheim
says, Egoistic suicide occurs in a society where there is excessive individualism, that
is, low social interaction ( Altruistic ). This means there is little interaction between
the individual and a cohesive social group that could give the individual a feel of
purpose in their life. People with more interaction create goals, values, and bonds
with people around them in a social group that increases their

Nikki Giovanni s Kidnap Poem Imagery
Kidnap by Nikki Giovanni is a short poem about referring to her lover whom she
has great desires to be with. Giovanni wants her lover to return to her or to continue
staying with her and shows her devotion for her lover through this poem. With
Nikki Giovanni s use of repetition, imagery, and metaphor, the purpose of this poem
is to captive the reader s mind through her words. Giovanni s use of imagery in this
poem appeals to the readers senses and shows readers that poetrycan take them to
different places. This poem expresses a tone of emotion and love. Giovanni tries to
draw in the readers using mixed and conflicting emotions.
First off, diction, structure, and genre are the foundations to any poem. Giovanni

Essay On The Inca Empire
Pushed
Most Empires have lasted more than a 100 years. The Roman Empire for example,
lasted for 1500 years, however, this was not the case for the Inca Empire. The
Incas started in a small area in Peru and prospered to become one of the most
influential agrarian civilizations (Mahiout, Khan, Karim Inca Empire). However, the
Inca Empire was pushed to its fall by external forces such as disease brought by
outsiders like the Spanish conquistadors. Disease weakened the Empire and the
conquistadors took advantage of the already crumbling Inca Empire and fully
destroyed it.
The Inca Empire s decline started when diseases such as smallpox, measles,
chickenpox, and influenza spread throughout the Empire, killing between 50% to
90% of the population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The civil war was inside the Empire and separated the Empire into sides but even
after the war the Empire still continued with only the side effect of being weaker
so the fall of the Empire was caused by the Spanish who pushed it to destruction.
The civil war occurred due to the death of Sapa Inca, Huayna Capac, and his oldest
son. His son was supposed to be the next Sapa Inca but both father and son died of
smallpox (The Fall of the Inca Empire). Since there was no clear replacement to the
throne there were only two options: the legitimate son of the dead Sapa Inca called
Huascar and his half brother Atahualpa. Atahualpa was a better warrior and
commander and was supported by his supporters while Huascar was supported by
the nobility. However, since Atahualpa was the son of the Sapa Inca and his
mistress he did not have authority to the throne. Nonetheless, Huascar initiated a
civil war that lasted five years and went up to 1532 which is when the Spanish
invaded. Atahualpa won since he was the greater warrior but his victory was short
lived. The Spanish conquistadors could not find any indestructible defiance due to
the Empire being damaged by the long civil war and disease and this gave them the
opportunity to completely destroy the Empire. The Inca jumped due to the civil war
but their decline was due to the push of disease and the
Universal Intellectual Essay
Deciphering the Differences Between Universal and Specific Intellectuals
It is said that a Universal Intellectual is a person who has a worldly view. Having an
opinion on information they believe they possess may be correct but here s this
thing even if they are correct hundred percent of the way, they are a universal
intellectual so they have the want to be involved in every topic and be able to express
their opinion in every topic, because that is what truly interests them.everything and
everyone, believing that they can give analytical information to anyone on any
subject. While a Specific Intellectual has precise information and expertise on one
individual thing, providing their main knowledge and stay completely out of topics
that a universal intellectual would dive straight into.
My definition of a universal intellectual is someone who believes that they know
everything, they talk about and when they do talk they don t stop until you
understand that their information is truly correct. Linder elder says from The Critical
Thinking Community Universal intellectual standards are standards which must be
applied to thinking whenever one is interested in checking the quality of reasoning
about a problem, issue, or situation. For example, if you have an opinion on
something and you are having a discussion about said topic, then that person is going
to step into that conversation and possibly correct you or give their own in depth
detail on that topic because they know
Examples Of Prejudice In Frankenstein
Prejudice is one of the very core and innate skills animals develop to have
comprehension of danger to evade it. Despite this, humans, which are indefinitely
animals, are capable of cognitive thought and essentially capable to circumvent the
idea of prejudism. Some of us avoid being prejudiced daily through compassion for
others. It s not commonly known that this simple gesture may ripple across the hearts
many people and fundamentally change them for the better. In the story of
Frakenstein by Mary Shelley, there are many examples of prejudiceoccurring and
essentially affecting the main characters negatively. An example of this would be
when Victor meets the monster on a mountain and curses him, saying do you dare
approach me? And do not you fear... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the next chapter, Frankenstein explains the injustice he is faced with as
prejudice from humans is thrown his way. It was when he was saw an old man
sitting near a fire who when perceived him, shrieked loudly, and quitted the hut, and
ran across the fields... (Shelley 44). In the midst of his isolation he becomes
confused and angry, later starved for the attention and love that a family may
provide for him. Soon after, the monster discovers his appearance in the pool and
even then commits the crime on himself. He was terrified when he viewed himself in
a transparent pool (Shelley 48). Despite his prejudice against himself, he overcomes
this and continues to crave the attention not yet given to him. After he burns the
cottage, the monster, who still has good in him despite the prejudices, saves a girl
who is almost drowning. After saving the girl, he was shot. He had saved a human
being from destruction, and as a recompense (he) writhed under the miserable pain of
a wound which shattered the flesh and bone (Shelley 61). Because of this, he drew
much anger from the thought of humans and attempted to kidnap William to make
him like the creature. The creature thought that William would be

When Cather discusses grass she gets very detailed. Everywhere, as far as the eye
could reach, there was nothing but rough, shaggy, red, grass most of it as tall as I.
North of the house, inside the ploughed fire breaks , grew a thick set strip of box
elder trees, low and bushy, their leaves already turning yellow. This hedge was
nearly a quarter of a mile long, but I had to look very hard to see it at all. The little
trees were insignificant against the grass. It seemed as if the grass were about to
run over them, and over the plum patch behind the sod chicken house. As I looked
about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the
grass made all the great prairie the color of wine stains, or of certain
Lynn White Catholicism And Deep Ecology Summary
In the following paper, I will be examining Lynn White Jr. s (1967) chargers that
Christianity, specifically Catholicism, is the reason behind our ecological crisis
because of its emphasis on God s transcendence, thus making it the most
anthropocentric religion in the world (p. 1205). By turning to Pope Francis (2015)
encyclical Laudato Si and to John E. Carroll s (2001) chapter titled Catholicism and
Deep Ecology , I will seek to argue against White, by showing how Catholicism is
fundamentally concerned with ecology based on its vision of Gods immanence.
Before being able to argue that Catholicism sees God as immanent, one must outline
the arguments in favour of God s transcendence. As previously mentioned, White
(1967) argues that Catholicism is founded on anthropocentric views and it is through
these views that man has destroyed their relationship with nature. He believes that
human ecology is deeply conditioned by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He argues that by destroying pagan animism, Christianity made it possible to exploit
nature in a mood of indifference to the feelings of natural objects (White, 1967,
p.1205). What White means is that by destroying pagan animism, Christianity has
destroyed the possibility of God s immanence. To look at this claim further, we must
consider the root words of animism, which is animal, and animate. Furthermore, the
word comes from the Latin word anima, which means soul (Goodin, 2016). This
indicates that all living things have a soul. White (1967) argues, that by replacing
pagan animism with saints, Catholicism is destroying human relationship with nature
by reinforcing the relationship between humans. In essence, by removing the soul
from a natural object, it places the power in human hands thus emphasizing God s
Military Retirement Ceremony
According to the information gathered from the AFI 36 3203 and miltarywives.com
Service Retirement, requires local commanders to have a retirement ceremony for
all retiring members and specifically offer a formal ceremony . During this
ceremony awards are presented and if the military wants a United States flag that
was flown over the Capitol it will be presented during this ceremony as well. Each
retirement ceremony is different, some begin with a meeting between the presiding
official and the militarymember that is retiring as well as his/her family. Each military
retirement ceremony will have a structured schedule and a seating plan. The family
members of the military member that is retiring usually are seated in the front row

The Theory Of The Natural Sciences
Knowledge, to me, can be defined as information that has been verified, either by
self or by the group and is something that we know and believe. Information on the
other hand is not necessarily known by us as individuals, but nevertheless, it does
exist. The sum of all information is therefore our total potential knowledge. This
prescribed title not only implies that the only knowledge possible is shared
knowledge , but that knowledge itself is impossible for an individual to attain. This
in turn discounts hunches, suspicions and theories which are all seen as being forms
of personal knowledge . This title must be used in context for it to hold meaning. In
context of the natural sciences, this title holds true as greater society is not so naive
as to believe as fact the thoughts of a single man. But when the thoughts and ideas of
a single man are put through a tried and tested method, such as the scientific method,
tests are carried out, criticism is allowed and improvement is made, only then, with
the relative evidence to back up this solitary man s claim, do we, the group, begin
to accept his claim as knowledge . On the other hand, knowledge of what we deem
ethical and morally right, whilst we can gain this from interaction with the group, is
not typically verified by the group, but rather is verified by ourselves, within our
own heads. An important question to ask in conjunction with the prescribed title is

Menil Collection
Visiting the Menil Collection and Contemporary Art Museum in Houston for the first
time was eye opening. I never thought art was such a big thing. I knew art was to be
creative but other than that I never would have thought art would have meaning.
From reading, Ways of Looking by Ossian Ward, art comes in many forms:
entertainment, confrontation, event, message, etc. however, having to pick two art
works and compare and contrast them was difficult since there were many to pick
from. I chose La lunette d appproche and Suck My Tits, even though there completely
different. They both share a hidden message that need recognition. The Menil
Collectionin Houston downtown has a wide variety of art ranging from ancient art
to surrealism. Although there were all types of art, surrealism struck out to me.
While trying to grasp the whole idea and why this was created. I came across this
one painting that froze me in place and drew my mind into amazement. The La
lunette d approche or the Telescope, an oil based painting on canvas created by Rene
Magritte in 1963. Its contents grab me by the arm and drew me closer. Allowing me
to escape into the darkness it depicts behind the open window. It metaphorically
represents how everything could be a front in one s eyes while beneath everything
they are things one might not want to share with other. While everything might seem

La lunette d approche is composed of majority of dark colors like black, dark brown,
darkish white, and a faded brown that seems to be pink. On the other hand, Suck My
Tits is made with pink, black, white, and tan. Even though both artworks share the
color black, its easily notable that Suck My Tits gives off a more lively vibe then
La lunette d approche which is more dull and boring. Yet, The Telescope is a more
of look into me type of deal, thus hints its name. While the suck My Tits is a more of

Interrogation from The Studio Secretary Murder case, Homicide desk
What most suspects will do throughout the game is that they will not hand
themselves over. The suspect will most likely run away or get in a car so the player
must tackle them or tail them down with a car. If the chase takes a seemingly long
time and the player did not tackle them yet, the suspect will eventually stop and fight.
Some suspects are bosses of large industries and they will send armed goons to fight.
The player will go through a big shootout and will have to gun their way through to
get to the main suspect.
Story line
The story of the game is set 1947 Los Angeles in Hollywood s golden age, a couple
of years after World War II. Cole Phelps is surviving soldier who is starting his career
as a police officer. After solving a couple of cases on Patrol, Phelps is later promoted
to the Traffic desk and he would soon continue to work his way up to Homicide,
Vice, and Arson desks.

Thomas Edison Contributions
Where would we be today without Thomas Alva Edison? How would our life be
different? Thomas Edison probably did more than any other man to influence the
industrial civilization in the world we live in today. He developed many devices that
greatly influenced life in the United States. Let us explore the life and contributions
of Thomas Edison.
Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio in a humble
brick house that still stands today. Edison was pulled from public school at the age
of twelve and taught by his mother at home. At eleven years old, he had a
chemical lab in the cellar of his parent s home, and at age twelve took a job as a
newspaper boy on a train. He had a chemical lab in a section of a baggage car and
ran a printing press where he made copies of the local newspaper. He also bought
and sold fresh fruit and vegetables along the train route. As you can tell, Thomas
Edison showed a work ethic and knowledge of business transactions that was
unusual for a boy of his age. While working at the train yard, Thomas Edison saved a
little boy who had fallen in the path of a freight car. The boy s father was the station
agent. As a show of thankfulness to Edison, he taught Edison telegraphy. Edison had
been interested in electricity, but telegraphy made him even more interested, and that
led him to his studies and experiments that resulted in some of the world s greatest
inventions.
In 1868 Edison filed his first patented invention, the electrical vote
The Media Is A Vital Part Of Today s Society
The media has become a vital part of today s society, anyone that has a phone can
assess current news and swiftly become updated to current events. The media can be
anything from entertainment, sports, politics, environmentalism, even celebrity
gossip. There is really no subject that cannot be discussed in the media. This could
cause same ethical issues, a major ethical question that we most ask ourselves is:
does the media go too far in fishing for fresh news stories? Nowadays, we obtain
information about recent events from all over the world thru television, newspapers,
magazines, as well as, the internet. The media is the only source to rely on when
learning about current events. Additionally, most of our opinions about current
events are based off media information. We tend to believe and depend more on the
media for any type of information, making ethicsin the media very important` in order
to have truthful and reliable information.
Media networks want to be the first to present the news to the public, creating a
highly competitive field. When I watch my television it seems like noting is off
limits or is too racy, shocking, and or intrusive. I believe that the lines of ethical
reporting has become blurred to produce stories that interest the public. In order for
the media to stay ethically sound they should practices utilitarianism while reporting
any event and informing the public.
People that practice utilitarianism believe that what matters is not how good or
How To Write A Photo Analysis Essay
The weak fall, but the strong will remain and never go under, stated by Anne Frank.
I settle on this quote because it is significant to the photo that I have chosen. The
photo that I found was searched on Google. When I initially found the photo on
Google, it was an image that was originally from Pinterest. As I looked more into the
photo it was also shown on many other websites of displayed images but had no
information about it. A majority of people ponder about photographs when examined
and have their own perspectives about them. In the photo that I have chosen, it could
imply to the readers that it suggests the simple act of kindness given to individuals
who need happiness.
The photo depicts a young girl and a young boy standing on a wooden dock near the
ocean as the sun is beginning to set along the side of them. There are a group of
geese flying above the ocean water in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This photo looks as if the young girl is offering the young boy help by giving him a
balloon and the benefit from the help given is receiving happiness. Although, the
photo illustrates more than just the simple fact of giving and receiving. The photo
shows the opportunity to help the ones in desperate need. This photo works as a
powerful representation of individuals in need. The young girl has all the
opportunities in life to do what she wants and still gives her time to help the young
boy. That is shown by the illustration of the young girl offering the young boy a
balloon. Everyone needs a helping hand at a certain time in their life. Most
importantly not everyone knows what people go through but the best option is to
offer support whether or not they will accept it. In addition, the worse act that can be
given is to ignore someone, and that certain someone can only learn from the action
of rejection. This thought is invoked because in the photo it is shown that the young
boy does not accept the balloon that is given to him by the young
Antibiotic Resistant And Infectious Diseases
Introduction
Antibiotics are medications that kill bacteria which could also make us sick and
eventual patient died from the virus if not treated quicker. Antibiotics help prevent
bacteria from cell duplication. People are dying worldwide just from virus outbreak
while they also seeking for a treatment of the diagnosis from bronchitis and other
infectious diseases. Doctors around the globe have discovered that some of the
organisms waging warfare against humans resistant to antibiotics these patients are
often taking. Only the most powerful antibiotics available will cure certain people
who are dying from the course antibiotic resistant and infectious diseases. From my
knowledge and previous experience, I recognize that it takes days if ... Show more

This review presents the salient aspects of antibiotic resistance development over the
past half century, with the oft restated conclusion that it is time to act. To achieve
complete restitution of therapeutic applications of antibiotics, there is a need for
more information on the role of environmental microbiomes in the rise of antibiotic
resistance. In particular, creative approaches to the discovery of novel antibiotics
and their expedited and controlled introduction to therapy are obligatory. If
something is not done sooner than later to prevent antibiotic resistance, we will
produce the major organism that we will not be unable to kill by some normal
manners. The medicine we are taking for infection disease is making the sickness
worse not to be better.
History of antibiotic resistance
Antibiotics have become the mainstay of our defense against bacterial infections.
They revolutionized medical care in the 20th century and become miracle drug of the
modern medicine. In 1928, British bacteriologist Alexander Fleming serendipitously
discovered penicillin in molds that had contaminated a dish used to grow bacteria in
his lab. The dish was
Compare And Contrast Lordy And Two Scavengers In A
Truck
Royals by Lorde and Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a
Mercedes by Lawrence Ferlinghetti both discuss the limited amount of equal
opportunities available within today s structure of society. Both Lorde and
Ferlinghetti utilise poetic devices to express their perspective on the contrast
between the classes of today s society. Poetic devices evident within these poems are
imagery, repetition, structure, tone, and metaphors. Imagery is effectively utilised
within both Lorde and Ferlinghetti s poems which allows the reader to visualise the
contrast between the social classes, and then further understand the poet s
perspective on the topic. Within Ferlinghetti s work imagery is a predominant
poetic device, with it being evident throughout the entirety of the poem. An example
of imagery is seen in lines 10 13 discussing the wealthy man, the man / in a hip
three piece linen suit / with shoulder length blond hair and sunglasses, as well as in
lines 20 24 discussing the older garbage... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ferlinghetti s ending is the last stanza of lines 31 37, in which he also includes a
metaphor, And the very red light for an instant / holding all four close together / as
if anything at all were possible / between them / across that small gulf / in the high
sea / of this democracy. This metaphorical ending articulates how although there
appears to only be a small gap between social classes that seems possible to resolve,
it never will be within a democratic nation. Lorde s ending does not instil a message
in the same way as Ferlinghetti s as it is a stanza which is repeated three times
throughout the poem, therefore does not have the powerful impact of Ferlinghetti s.
Therefore, Ferlinghetti is able to greatly impact the reader with his ending in a more
effective way than Lorde, due to the singularity of the stanza within the

His theory central contradiction of capitalism explains the rate of wealth coming out of the economy is greater than the economy itself. As a result, wealth becomes more divided and the inequality grows between the distributions of the wealth. Piketty proposes a global tax to equalize the current economic wealth, but the way he measured this wealth was flawed. Piketty, in the article, never distinguished the difference between what wealth is and what capital. He misrepresented wealth by only using estate tax returns to study changes in the inequality of wealth

In my opinion, Louis Gerstner s was a brilliant strategist which turn the table around for IBM. A successful strategist are people who can gain better understanding and critically analyze the situation and able to develop strategies to match their competitors. • 6. Main Tenets Of Confucianism Confucianism began around 2500 years ago in China as the moral and political ideologies and philosophies of Kong Fuzi, known in the west as Confucius. Confucius believed there was a mandate from Heaven that we should spend our lives seeking knowledge and self improvement not only for the benefit of ourselves, but also for society as a whole. As the individual strives to lead a life in the Confucian way, it radiates outward from self to family, friends, society, and the world in general. Confucianismis not a theistic religion as it does not have deities, but it does support ritualistic honoring of deceased ancestors and does have a concept of heaven. Confuciusis not considered a god, but one who exerts considerable influence from where he can no longer be seen. The main tenets of Confucianism include a lifelong commitment to self improvement and knowledge and the outward expression of that knowledge in honorable deeds and acts that encourage like behavior in others. At the heart of Confucianism is the concept of Ren/Jen. This translates as humaneness, or benevolence between people. It suggests that behavior toward others comes from within, or as often said, from the heart. Confucianism does not encourage people to seek solitude or isolation as a pathway to heaven like some other religions, but instead strongly encourages close societal bonds. This innate connection begins with family, the core of society. Confucius believed that humans are born with empathy and a sense of

After plans fell through and being very short on cash, he decided to stay in London until he was able to pay his way home. When he returned he got married to Deborah Reads, girl he met and fell in love with many years earlier. After his establishment of the first public library his role as a founder and leader started to take shape. He quickly became the president and the secretary of the library to ensure its success. At this time Ben Franklin was looking for ways to improve the nation. His next big improvement was the Union Fire company organized in 1734 which became the nation s first Fire Department. The fire department that he developed made a significant impact on the city of Philadelphia. This also sparked the idea of having night watchmen to watch the city during the hours of darkness. • 10. The Manhattan Project Essay The Atomic Bomb The research for the first Atomic bomb took place in the United States, by a group of nuclear engineers; the name of this research was called, The Manhattan Project . On July 16, 1945, the detonation of the first atomic bomb was tested near Los Alamos, New Mexico. As the atomic bomb was detonated, it sent shock waves across the globe, which demonstrated that nuclear power would forever change the meaning of war. To create a nuclear bomb, nuclear fissionmust occur. The process of nuclear fission was splitting the nucleus of an atom. Splitting an atom was caused by neutrons firing through one atom and then that atom s neutrons shoot off into other atoms, starting a chain reaction. In October of 1934, Enrico Fermi, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oppenheimer had named the first tested nuclear explosion Trinity . This test was for the implosion design plutonium bomb, which had the same design as Fat Man, dropped on Nagasaki. After the successful testing of Trinity, Oppenheimer quoted from the Bhagavad Gita, If radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one. Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds. Leo Szilard was a Hungarian Physicist who dedicated himself to learning how to create a successful chain reaction to make an atomic bomb before the Germans had a chance to do so. Szilard convinced Albert Einstein to help research with him on how to create an atomic bomb. The Einstein Szilard letter, sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt led to the foundation of research into nuclear fission by the United States government. This ultimately encouraged the development of the program, the Manhattan Project. Albert Einstein wrote a letter to the Belgian Ambassador to stop selling uranium to the Germans so they could slow their progress on the atomic bomb. He also wrote a letter to President Roosevelt announcing the importance of the United States to create the bomb before other countries. Other than writing and signing letters, Einstein himself did not play a role in developing the atomic bomb. Enrico Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for his work
  • 11. Queen Elizabeth I Take Over England As we are nearing the end of 1559 and the beginning of 1560, Queen Elizabeth has taken over England after the death of Queen Mary I. Queen Mary I was second in line for the throne after the death of King Edward VI, son of Jane Seymour (Smith). Queen Elizabeth I is the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII s second wife). During the reign of King Edward IV, England was Protestant (Smith). When Queen Mary I took over, after the death of Edward VI in 1553, she attempted to turn the country back into Roman Catholicism, which led to the death of hundreds of Protestant leaders (Commire). • 12. 2-Methylbutane Lab In this lab, concentrated HCl was added to 2 methyl 2 butanol in a separatory funnel. The reactants were shaken to help the reaction occur quickly. The separatory funnel was vented several times, to reduce pressure that resulted from the reaction which was due to the high vapor pressure of HCl. The Hydrochloric acid will dissociate, and the H+ will react with the OH C to form H2O C. The H2O is a good leaving group. As the LG is on a tertiary carbon, an Sn1 reaction should occur. In the rate determining step, the water will leave, to produce a tertiary carbocation. In the second (fast) step, the Cl nucleophile from the dissociated HCl will attack the carbocation and 2 chloro 2 mehtylbutane forms. In this reaction, some E1 also occurs; however, HCl will react with the product of E1 to produce the 2 chloro 2 methylbutane product. In the lab, after the reaction occurred, the product needed to be purified as excess HCl was used and still remained. To purify the product, a series of reactions were completed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The percent recovery was calculated by finding the moles of the initial and final products. The moles of the initial product were found by multiplying the volume used by the density of 2 methyl 2 butanol, and then dividing by the molar mass. The percent recovery was good, showing few errors were made and that the lab went as expected. To improve the recovery, the extractions could be done even more carefully. To analyze the purity of the product, an IR test was run. 2 methyl 2 butanol has a large OH peak; 2 chloro 2 butane does not, but otherwise looks quite similar. The main peak on 2 chloro 2 butane is a C Cl peak; however, this peak is not revealed with this IR machine, so it could not be analyzed. The IR chart for the experimental product did not have the OH peak and looked like the theoretical IR chart, meaning it was dry and that the desired product had been

  • 16. The Humanistic Theory And The Kubler-Ross Five Stage Grief... This essay looks to explain how both the Humanistic theory and the Kubler ross five stage grief model can be applied to the loss of a limb. It will also be looking at how these theories can help the healthcare team in their care provision. The loss of a limb is a great loss to a person and would be difficult for anyone to comprehend initially and some never can. It affects all areas of a person s life from the obvious physical aspect to mentally/emotionally. Apart from losing a limb they must comprehend the reason why they had a limb amputated, for example through disease or trauma (Healio,2002). The humanistic theory, particularly the work of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, has been a great breakthrough within psychology, especially when looking at the emotions, thoughts and behaviour of an amputee. Unlike other psychological theories the humanistic theory aims to look at a person s feelings and to see life as they see it rather than from the perspective of an observer(Mcleod,2015). According to Roger s humanistic theory, every person has the built in drive and ability to be the best that they can be. This means to self actualise. To achieve self actualisation a person needs a high self concept which the theory explains has three main components. These are self image, self esteem and ideal self (McLeod, 2014). The loss of a limb affects a person s self concept. The loss of a limb may make a person feel no longer attractive and deserving of any forms of attention. As their

Dolores Huerta Latina Leader For thousands of years immigration to the United States has been considered one of the biggest problems and has been one of the topics most talked about, especially in this year, being one of the favorite topics to talk about in the presidential debates. Yet, due to speeches given by President Donald Trump little is known and talked about the problems immigrants, especially Latinos face day by day, socially and economically. By being a minority in the United States it has been very difficult for immigrant farm workers to get where they are now and have more opportunities than before the 1970s. Fortunately, there have been organizations and leaders that have helped immigrants through the years, one of these being Dolores Huerta. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socially Huerta fought against discrimination and racism against Latinos, but she did not only help the Latino community, but she also helped fight for women s rights. Although there hasn t been a complete elimination discrimination against minorities and women in the whole country there has been a big improvement. It was while she was working in New York, where she met feminist Gloria Steinem, who inspired her to start a feminist movement (Dolores Huerta). Another big social change is that Latinos became more involved in politics each year. Especially in this year s elections Latinos have proved to have a big influence in state politics as their power have boosted the concentration on the Democratic side as 22 out of 24 are democratic (Los Angeles Times). Now in days Dolores Huerta has continued to influence politicians and organizations to continue helping the Latino/immigrant community. One of these being the U visa program which has helped to encourage more than 2000 immigrants that have suffered from domestic violence to report these crimes without having to fear that they will be deported (Kaitlyn Schallhorn). Politicians such as Jerry Brown in California have also helped the Latino community by providing $ 176.6 million to fix and clean houses (California Latino Legislative). Dolores Huerta has not taken for granted as shown by today and the previous year, her legacy continues as she herself countess helping the Latino community. As I have previously said, throughout the 1990s the Cali and Medellin drug cartels dominated the world cocaine trade. • 23. The Historical Context Of Nursing Nursing was not always seen as a profession, therefore it is important to explore what a profession is and its historical context related to nursing. Turkoski (1995) states that profession is a social construct that was determined by a male worldview; only men were allowed to have professions. Over time the concept of professionhas moved beyond the gender divide and established a set of criteria that are non gender specific. RNABC (as cited in Northrup et al, 2004) listed attributes that explained how nurses were a profession. These attributes are, responsibility and accountability to the public, have own body of knowledge, bound by a code ethics, provide a service to the public and is self regulating. However, education is missing from the RNABC standards of professional development, according the Merriam Websters dictionary (2015) a profession is, a type of job that requires special education, training or skill and requires specialized knowledge. Bluhm (2014) adds that it is the specialized training that allows someone to be called a nurse. Ten Hoeve, Jansen and Roodbol (2014) agree that education and development of knowledge is the reason why nursing was raised to the professional status. It is this knowledge development that has helped shaped what nursing is today, and has allowed nurses to share a common worldview. Or have you ever struggled to understand why people need tent foots? We ll I m here to answer that. I think that it is important to know what a tent foot is because it is such a useful tool when camping, that it can save the underneath of your tent from damage while you are camping. So what is a tent footprint, really? Think of a tent footprint like the foundation of the tent. What this tent foot does is it protects the underneath of your tent from any wear and tear. Normally, tent foot s come attached to the tent itself so you don t necessarily have to worry about buying a new one. However, many tents are waterproof underneath. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Believe it or not, when you are doing the tossing and turning, you are causing abrasions on the ground material of the tent. Over time, the friction from those abrasions will tear the underneath of the tent apart. Are there any other uses for the tent foot? Tent footprints can be used as a form of insulation underneath your tent. When the tent foot is underneath your tent, the tent foot will trap warm air underneath your tent to provide you warmth for as long as possible. The tent footprint also makes sure that packing up the tent is as easy as possible. Since the tent itself will be on top of the tent footprint, the tent will stay dry underneath. That means that you don t have to spend as much time cleaning the tent before packing up. One other way that tent footprints can help, other than protecting the tent from damage, is by helping you place your corners of the tent. When you buy your tent, the tent foot will nearly be the exact dimension as the tent footprint. As for the waterproofing; just because some tents are waterproof, doesn t mean that a tent footprint cannot add an extra waterproofing layer underneath the tent. It is generally a good idea to have as many extra layers of water

  • 30. Women In A Scandal In Bohemia And King Solomon s Mines In both Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s, A Scandal in Bohemia (1891), and H. Rider Haggard s, King Solomon s Mines (1885), male figures utilize the femme fatale image of the monstrous feminine to concretize or reaffirm views of a dominant patriarchal power (OED). Specifically, characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Allan Quartermain, subsequently attempt to debase the influences of female manipulation and superiority. The expression of this thematic trend occurs primarily through the tension of ignorance versus insight, and the recurring images of dehumanization. As such, these tropes express within each text the attempts of men to degrade women s inherent authority. When considering Irene Adler, from A Scandal in Bohemia, and Gagool, from King Solomon s Mines, the tension of ignorance versus insight is essential in preliminarily introducing the characters position within the femme fatale role. Just as a femme fatale is by definition a woman, who destabilizes male control, both Adler and Gagool use their exclusive access to information to subvert male desires and boundaries of class (OED). For instance, Irene Adler exploits her possession of compromising letters and photographs to blackmail the King of Bohemia and so, ruin (him) by jeopardizing his marriage to another woman (Doyle, A Scandal in Bohemia). Thereby, she exemplifies the image of the femme fatale by threatening the monarchy s stability with issues of scandal while, alternately, ensuring that her

Triangular Number Of Triangular Numbers Triangular Numbers Eli Nazarian Ms. Ramson H Algebra 2A October 21, 2014 A triangular number is a number that counts the amount of objects that form when they are put together to form an equilateral triangle (a triangle with all equal sides). The most common object used to form a triangle are dots. When the dots create an equilateral triangle, the number of dots seen in the triangle represent the triangular number. Overall, the sequence is generated from a pattern of dots which form a triangle. The first row contains a single dot and each subsequent row contains more dots than the previous one. The sequence of triangular numbers are: 1, 3, 6,10, 15, 21... and so on. When working with multiple triangles, each triangle is assigned a triangle number. For example, triangle one (T1) has a triangular number of one. Triangle three has a triangular number of six. The letter T, followed but a number represents a certain triangle. Does one author s beliefs run counter to the other, or are they almost identical with a different approach? Within the two works I have contextualized, I confirmed that both authors are Puritanalthough they vary in tone and tactic to declare her point. To begin, in 1609 Anne Bradstreet wrote the poem Upon the Burning of our House . In this poem Bradstreet depicts a woman losing her house and husband , along with other things she treasured, to fire. According to the poem, Bradstreet says, And to my God my heart did cry/To straighten me in my distress/And not to leave me succourless. (8 9) This evidence illuminates that Bradstreet s character has a solid relationship with God and she takes solace in the fact that he will relieve her from all of her stress. In addition, Bradstreet says I blest His name that gave and took (Bradstreet 14) To elucidate, the woman in the poem is secure with her belief of God. She embraces and respects God s decision to punish her, knowing that he will take care of her after her life on Earth. To add on, Bradstreet also states, And did thy wealth on Earth abide? / Didst fix thy hope on mound ring dust? / To arm of flesh didst make thy trust? The Incas started in a small area in Peru and prospered to become one of the most influential agrarian civilizations (Mahiout, Khan, Karim Inca Empire). However, the Inca Empire was pushed to its fall by external forces such as disease brought by outsiders like the Spanish conquistadors. Disease weakened the Empire and the conquistadors took advantage of the already crumbling Inca Empire and fully destroyed it. The Inca Empire s decline started when diseases such as smallpox, measles, chickenpox, and influenza spread throughout the Empire, killing between 50% to 90% of the population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The civil war was inside the Empire and separated the Empire into sides but even after the war the Empire still continued with only the side effect of being weaker so the fall of the Empire was caused by the Spanish who pushed it to destruction. The civil war occurred due to the death of Sapa Inca, Huayna Capac, and his oldest son. His son was supposed to be the next Sapa Inca but both father and son died of smallpox (The Fall of the Inca Empire). Since there was no clear replacement to the throne there were only two options: the legitimate son of the dead Sapa Inca called Huascar and his half brother Atahualpa. Atahualpa was a better warrior and commander and was supported by his supporters while Huascar was supported by the nobility. However, since Atahualpa was the son of the Sapa Inca and his mistress he did not have authority to the throne. Nonetheless, Huascar initiated a civil war that lasted five years and went up to 1532 which is when the Spanish invaded. Atahualpa won since he was the greater warrior but his victory was short lived. The Spanish conquistadors could not find any indestructible defiance due to the Empire being damaged by the long civil war and disease and this gave them the opportunity to completely destroy the Empire. The Inca jumped due to the civil war but their decline was due to the push of disease and the
  • 39. Universal Intellectual Essay Deciphering the Differences Between Universal and Specific Intellectuals It is said that a Universal Intellectual is a person who has a worldly view. Having an opinion on information they believe they possess may be correct but here s this thing even if they are correct hundred percent of the way, they are a universal intellectual so they have the want to be involved in every topic and be able to express their opinion in every topic, because that is what truly interests them.everything and everyone, believing that they can give analytical information to anyone on any subject. While a Specific Intellectual has precise information and expertise on one individual thing, providing their main knowledge and stay completely out of topics that a universal intellectual would dive straight into. My definition of a universal intellectual is someone who believes that they know everything, they talk about and when they do talk they don t stop until you understand that their information is truly correct. Linder elder says from The Critical Thinking Community Universal intellectual standards are standards which must be applied to thinking whenever one is interested in checking the quality of reasoning about a problem, issue, or situation. For example, if you have an opinion on something and you are having a discussion about said topic, then that person is going to step into that conversation and possibly correct you or give their own in depth detail on that topic because they know

Despite this, humans, which are indefinitely animals, are capable of cognitive thought and essentially capable to circumvent the idea of prejudism. Some of us avoid being prejudiced daily through compassion for others. It s not commonly known that this simple gesture may ripple across the hearts many people and fundamentally change them for the better. In the story of Frakenstein by Mary Shelley, there are many examples of prejudiceoccurring and essentially affecting the main characters negatively. In the midst of his isolation he becomes confused and angry, later starved for the attention and love that a family may provide for him. Soon after, the monster discovers his appearance in the pool and even then commits the crime on himself. He was terrified when he viewed himself in a transparent pool (Shelley 48). Despite his prejudice against himself, he overcomes this and continues to crave the attention not yet given to him. After he burns the cottage, the monster, who still has good in him despite the prejudices, saves a girl who is almost drowning. After saving the girl, he was shot. He had saved a human being from destruction, and as a recompense (he) writhed under the miserable pain of a wound which shattered the flesh and bone (Shelley 61). Because of this, he drew much anger from the thought of humans and attempted to kidnap William to make him like the creature. The creature thought that William would be

Everywhere, as far as the eye could reach, there was nothing but rough, shaggy, red, grass most of it as tall as I. This hedge was nearly a quarter of a mile long, but I had to look very hard to see it at all. The little trees were insignificant against the grass. It seemed as if the grass were about to run over them, and over the plum patch behind the sod chicken house. As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the color of wine stains, or of certain
  • 44. Lynn White Catholicism And Deep Ecology Summary In the following paper, I will be examining Lynn White Jr. s (1967) chargers that Christianity, specifically Catholicism, is the reason behind our ecological crisis because of its emphasis on God s transcendence, thus making it the most anthropocentric religion in the world (p. 1205). By turning to Pope Francis (2015) encyclical Laudato Si and to John E. Carroll s (2001) chapter titled Catholicism and Deep Ecology , I will seek to argue against White, by showing how Catholicism is fundamentally concerned with ecology based on its vision of Gods immanence. Before being able to argue that Catholicism sees God as immanent, one must outline the arguments in favour of God s transcendence. As previously mentioned, White (1967) argues that Catholicism is founded on anthropocentric views and it is through these views that man has destroyed their relationship with nature. He believes that human ecology is deeply conditioned by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He argues that by destroying pagan animism, Christianity made it possible to exploit nature in a mood of indifference to the feelings of natural objects (White, 1967, p.1205). What White means is that by destroying pagan animism, Christianity has destroyed the possibility of God s immanence. To look at this claim further, we must consider the root words of animism, which is animal, and animate. Furthermore, the word comes from the Latin word anima, which means soul (Goodin, 2016). This indicates that all living things have a soul. White (1967) argues, that by replacing pagan animism with saints, Catholicism is destroying human relationship with nature by reinforcing the relationship between humans. In essence, by removing the soul from a natural object, it places the power in human hands thus emphasizing God s

Information on the other hand is not necessarily known by us as individuals, but nevertheless, it does exist. The sum of all information is therefore our total potential knowledge. This prescribed title not only implies that the only knowledge possible is shared knowledge , but that knowledge itself is impossible for an individual to attain. This in turn discounts hunches, suspicions and theories which are all seen as being forms of personal knowledge . This title must be used in context for it to hold meaning. In context of the natural sciences, this title holds true as greater society is not so naive as to believe as fact the thoughts of a single man. But when the thoughts and ideas of a single man are put through a tried and tested method, such as the scientific method, tests are carried out, criticism is allowed and improvement is made, only then, with the relative evidence to back up this solitary man s claim, do we, the group, begin to accept his claim as knowledge . On the other hand, knowledge of what we deem ethical and morally right, whilst we can gain this from interaction with the group, is not typically verified by the group, but rather is verified by ourselves, within our own heads. An important question to ask in conjunction with the prescribed title is How does knowledge creation differ between areas of

Thomas Edison probably did more than any other man to influence the industrial civilization in the world we live in today. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life in the United States. Let us explore the life and contributions of Thomas Edison. Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio in a humble brick house that still stands today. Edison was pulled from public school at the age of twelve and taught by his mother at home. At eleven years old, he had a chemical lab in the cellar of his parent s home, and at age twelve took a job as a newspaper boy on a train. He had a chemical lab in a section of a baggage car and ran a printing press where he made copies of the local newspaper. He also bought and sold fresh fruit and vegetables along the train route. As you can tell, Thomas Edison showed a work ethic and knowledge of business transactions that was unusual for a boy of his age. While working at the train yard, Thomas Edison saved a little boy who had fallen in the path of a freight car. The boy s father was the station agent. As a show of thankfulness to Edison, he taught Edison telegraphy. Edison had been interested in electricity, but telegraphy made him even more interested, and that led him to his studies and experiments that resulted in some of the world s greatest inventions. In 1868 Edison filed his first patented invention, the electrical vote

The Media Is A Vital Part Of Today s Society The media has become a vital part of today s society, anyone that has a phone can assess current news and swiftly become updated to current events. The media can be anything from entertainment, sports, politics, environmentalism, even celebrity gossip. There is really no subject that cannot be discussed in the media. This could cause same ethical issues, a major ethical question that we most ask ourselves is: does the media go too far in fishing for fresh news stories? Nowadays, we obtain information about recent events from all over the world thru television, newspapers, magazines, as well as, the internet. The media is the only source to rely on when learning about current events. Additionally, most of our opinions about current events are based off media information. We tend to believe and depend more on the media for any type of information, making ethicsin the media very important` in order to have truthful and reliable information. Media networks want to be the first to present the news to the public, creating a highly competitive field. When I watch my television it seems like noting is off limits or is too racy, shocking, and or intrusive. Compare And Contrast Lordy And Two Scavengers In A Truck Royals by Lorde and Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes by Lawrence Ferlinghetti both discuss the limited amount of equal opportunities available within today s structure of society. Both Lorde and Ferlinghetti utilise poetic devices to express their perspective on the contrast between the classes of today s society. Poetic devices evident within these poems are imagery, repetition, structure, tone, and metaphors. Imagery is effectively utilised within both Lorde and Ferlinghetti s poems which allows the reader to visualise the contrast between the social classes, and then further understand the poet s perspective on the topic. Within Ferlinghetti s work imagery is a predominant poetic device, with it being evident throughout the entirety of the poem. An example of imagery is seen in lines 10 13 discussing the wealthy man, the man / in a hip three piece linen suit / with shoulder length blond hair and sunglasses, as well as in lines 20 24 discussing the older garbage... This metaphorical ending articulates how although there appears to only be a small gap between social classes that seems possible to resolve, it never will be within a democratic nation. Lorde s ending does not instil a message in the same way as Ferlinghetti s as it is a stanza which is repeated three times throughout the poem, therefore does not have the powerful impact of Ferlinghetti s. Therefore, Ferlinghetti is able to greatly impact the reader with his ending in a more effective way than Lorde, due to the singularity of the stanza within the
