First They Killed My Father Essay
Crafting an essay on the topic "First They Killed My Father" can be a challenging task due to
the sensitive and emotional nature of the subject matter. This topic delves into the Khmer Rouge
regime in Cambodia, exploring the harrowing experiences of survivors, particularly as narrated in
Loung Ung's memoir. Writing about such a traumatic historical event requires a delicate balance
between presenting the facts, conveying the human experience, and maintaining a respectful
tone.
One of the challenges is capturing the essence of the narrative while avoiding sensationalism or
trivialization of the atrocities. It demands thorough research to provide a nuanced understanding
of the historical context, the impact on individuals and communities, and the broader
implications of such events. Engaging with the memoir and secondary sources is essential to
comprehend the complexities and nuances of the subject matter.
Moreover, addressing the emotional aspect of the narrative requires a writer to approach the topic
with empathy and sensitivity. Balancing the emotional weight of the content with an analytical
and critical perspective is crucial. This may involve discussing themes such as resilience,
survival, and the impact of trauma on individuals and societies.
Organizing the essay effectively is another challenge. A well-structured essay should present a
clear thesis statement, provide supporting evidence, and offer thoughtful analysis. This requires
careful planning and consideration of the narrative's key elements, ensuring that the essay flows
logically and cohesively.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic "First They Killed My Father" demands a thoughtful
and empathetic approach. It involves navigating through the complexities of historical events,
human experiences, and emotional narratives. A successful essay requires meticulous research,
sensitivity to the subject matter, and skillful organization. However, the rewards lie in
contributing to a deeper understanding of significant historical events and their impact on
individuals and societies.

Asthma In Newborns
There are parents who are having second thoughts of having a pet inside their home,

Essay on Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers
A passion for foods from the American Southwest is sweeping through the country.
The main component and most popular item of this fad is the chili pepper, an item
of tremendous variability and a staple of many people in Central America. In this
country, chili peppers were once only found in specialized ethnic stores, but now it is
just as likely to be found at the neighborhood Kroger. For most people, however, their
knowledge stops here. Through this paper I hope to educate the reader on some other
aspects of this intriguing vegetable, such as its history, chemistry, and uses.
There is some confusion over what a chili pepper is. To many it is only the hot
varieties of pepper, such as the jalapeno or the ... Show more content on

Dr. Chanca described chili peppers as the native s principle food and compared them
to the turnip (Andrews 1984).
The seeds of the chili pepper were brought back to Spain, where it was grown in
monastery gardens. Portuguese traders then spread the chili peppers to many far
flung locations, such as India, Indonesia, and Persia (Andrews 1984).
Chile peppers became popular due to their great variability in size, shape, and
color. Unfortunately, this long proved to be a problem for the taxonomists, who
frequently had trouble telling the difference between a different variety and a
different species. It wasn t until the 1950 s that it was decided that there were five
main species of chili peppers, and twenty wild ones (Proulx 1985). The five main
species are: Capsicum annum, Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum
baccatum, and Capsicum pubescens. However, it is considered impossible to
develop a system of classification that would cover all of the chili peppers, due to
the great variation among the members of the same species, especially in places such
as Mexico (Smith, Villalon, and Villa 1987).
Man s interest in chili peppers has resulted in new varieties, such as the TAM
Jalapeno, Hidalgo Serrano, and Numex Big Jim, which have a milder flavor or are
more resistant to disease. In order to make chili peppers more palatable to the
public, chili pepper breeders are breeding varieties that are
Sexuality Is A Social Identity That Goes Beyond The...
Sexuality is a social identity that goes beyond the objectivity of the title and into the
subjective scope of the personal lives of individuals, which in turn fabricate the social
constructivism of a nation. Classism, heterosexism, and cisgenderism are further
reinforced within the institutionalization of heteronormativity, being the promotion of
the genderbinary and heterosexuality as the only valid form of gender expression and
sexual orientation. The normalization of this system is not enforced as
inconspicuously as one would believe, with both Western and Eastern countries
visibly dictating social norms in regards to sexuality, by deeming certain sexual
practices as socially acceptable through the sanction of microaggressions and... Show

These American words which are typically used to further define and label
individuals who do and do not fall within the classifications of heteronormativity are
used as the result of there being no cultural explanation and validation for lesbian
Thai women. The omittance of a translation for the term lesbian in the Thai language
further perpetuates the validation of heteronormativity as the only acceptable form of
relationships. The term men being used interchangeably with lesbian demonstrates
how in the Thai culture it is assumed and widely agreed that only men would be
sexually attracted to women (Sinnott, 2).
For Asian women, their sexuality has not only impacted their identity, that identity in
itself has created a power structure within each of these countries that has grown to
include, but not outwardly accept the sexual practices of marginalized groups of
women. In Thailand specifically, it is made known that homosexual behavior does
not necessarily lead to an identity, nor does it necessarily constitute a distinct
transgression of sexual or gender norms , yet the secularization of queer women leads
to class divides, and sociocultural boundaries with the intention of exclusion (Sinnott,
3). Despite a vast array of feeble terms to correctly identify masculine lesbians,
feminine lesbians, normal (in regard to Thai culture) women,

The Importance of Personal Responsibility

As an adult you are responsible for every action that you take, but before that action
are a series of thoughts that lead you to taking that action. Your personal
responsibility starts at a young age, you are either taught personal responsibility as
you grow into an adult by being held accountable of your own actions or the
responsibility is taken from you. Depending on how you were brought up your
transition into becoming an adult can either be an easy one or a difficult one where
everyone is to blame but yourself. As an adult the one thing that you know is a
constant is that you will be held accountable for your actions whether you like it or

I know, believe me I know because at first as an internet affiliate marketer I failed
miserably and it really set me back because I wasn t used to failing in business.
Let me explain.
To be successful in affiliate marketing, that is, to make money, there are probably 10
things you absolutely must do very well:
You must be able to find the right market niche.
You must be able to find a starving crowd of buyers.
You must be able to promote effectively to this ravenous mob.
You must choose the right product for you chosen niche.
You must pick a product that has superior affiliate tools and support from the owner
so you can compete and succeed along the way.
You must use the best methods that your budget will allow to promote your product.
You must get really good at thinking outside of the box so you can choose the best
keywords for your promotional campaigns.
You absolutely MUST rank in Google with your keyword selection and promotional
efforts.(Search Engine Optimization)
You must know who you competition is.
You must understand Page Rank and how to get the best back links you absolutely
can.
Now let me repeat...these are the absolutes, the musts!
If you are into affiliate marketing then you know all too well that each one these
steps is very labor intensive. It takes time to complete each one of these steps.

How I learn through journal articles is definitely different than from a novel or a
series of essays. To understand what the article is trying to explain, I have to read
them a couple times thoroughly. The strategy I find to be the most beneficial is I
will first read the abstract (if there is one), read the introduction, browse through
the headings and finally read the conclusion so that when I go back and read the
whole article I will have a guide and a general idea about what the article is about
/arguing. I think this is really important as academic articles can be extremely
dense and you can get trapped in the language and you end up reading a paragraph
and take nothing away from it. It you read with a purpose, or with a guide it is easier

By connecting the ideas from the articles and applying them with Things Fall Apart
which I believe is always helpful when discussing theory is to apply it to a modern
or relevant sense. It makes it much easier to comprehend somewhat complex
theoretical ideas on what identity is by seeing it played out in a novel we had just
previously examined. This links to what I said before with connecting concepts to my
own personal experiences or previous understandings for a more holistic
understanding. Although there is the argument that a good researcher is able to
separate oneself from their work and simply display the facts; however, I do not
think that this is what the course requires from students. I think that because identity
is such an intricate part of your daily lives it would be near impossible to separate
oneself from the research (or these two articles), well at least for myself.
To improve my learning on the theories of identity and reading scholarly journal
articles in general I think it is important to do more research. To be able to put the
articles you read within the greater context of what has already been written, was this
ground breaking work, or was it expanding on concepts that had already been studied?
I think that it is important to know where the article you are reading stands in

How Much Power Should the American Government Yield
A dispute widespread amongst the citizens of the United States of America is on
government, and more specifically on how much power the government should
yield. The philosophical question I will be posing in this article is what should the
government have the power to do . All the way to the left, we have liberals who
believe in a big governmentand a government that is involved with supporting the
people and curbing social inequalities and social hierarchywhile supporting social
equality. On the other side of the spectrum we have right wing conservatives who
prefer a government that is small and call for reduced social spending, less
regulation. In addition, they accept social hierarchy and social inequalityciting that
social hierarchy and social inequality are inevitable. With this essay, I want to focus
on if the government has the power to invade your privacy. Currently reactions has
been wild ever since former NSA analyst Edward Snowden leaked the massive
PRISM internet surveillance program used by the NSA to collect data on citizens of
the U.S. The philosophical question what should the government have the power to
do correlates with the NSA because the NSA is an institution of the government, and
should the government have the power to spy on its citizens without their knowledge
and without a warrant for the sake of national security. Foucault goes through the way
governments have attempted to control populations throughout history, and how
power has exercised

The nature of one s identity is attributed by the environment that influences the
experiences that the individual intakes. Self is the fundamental being that separates
individuals due to the uniqueness of their minds and the experiences that influence
the distinctiveness of identity. Martha Stout s background in psychology initializes a
deeper understanding of selfthrough the analysis of stories told by her patients who
suffer from dissociation in her writing called When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It

Stout and Bell capitalize the importance of narration in their writings to play part in
the identities of characters Jayanthi and Seth. Jayanthi, an Indian woman that
manipulates her sexuality to disprove societal and cultural labels which is
categorized by Bell as the Sexual Woman, takes narration into account when she
recollects her history to her friends and family. The adrenaline and eccentricity of
the stories give her purpose that is displayed through the context of her stories. She
also uses narration to interpret her desire for relationship but struggles to find one.
Bell explains after bad girl Jayanthi tells her sexual experience and relational denials,
She was aware now that she had been feeling insecure at the time, and that she had
been seeking out attention and affection... At the time she had longed for a sexual
history, for stories that would make her real and alive (33). Through her stories,
Jayanthi realized her faults in her immense sexual experiences that cut her away from
having a tangible relationship that would change her bad girl identity. Knowing that
she craves attention, she prefers the sexual lifestyle in order to have a purpose to
relate to in her stories. On the other hand, Stout s patient, Seth, utilizes narration to
directly tell Stout the effect that dissociation causes him. Dissociation disrupts Seth s
identity as well as his
Truth In Cormac Mccarthy s The Road
Denying what you feel will not make it go away. It ensures that it never gets

reality and avoid unfavorable circumstances. However, many people think that
avoiding the truth means avoiding the situation, equivalating that the circumstances
are not real. This leads to other, more costly problems. Cormac McCarthy s The

Passing by Nella Larsen is a story told in the perspective of Irene Redfield, a fair
skinned African American woman, who worries that her husband s restlessness in
their marriage is due to a possible affair with her friend Clare. As Irene gets ready
for an event she thinks to herself: With this self assurance that she had no real
knowledge, she redoubled her efforts to drive out of her mind the distressing thought
of faiths broken and trusts betrayed which every mental vision of Clare, of Brian,
brought with them. She could not, she would not, go again through the tearing
agony that lay just behind her, (Larsen, ch. 3.2). Having no real knowledge if her
husband s affair is true helps her to put the thought in the back of her mind,
however the reader finds that the affair is not real. This imagination of Brian and
Clare shows that Irene is mentally unstable, she does not like what she imagines
when she thinks of Clare, of Brian, the two together, yet it is better to handle then
the agony she faces at the thought of Brian s sexuality. The matter of his sexuality
is something she refuses to think about which is why she forms the theory of his
infidelity to protect herself from the truth, yet it only drives her deeper into insanity.
However, Irene is not the only one who is brought to insanity by the denial she
creates. Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, tells of a young girl, Pecola who is African

Essay On Oliver Twist
Scene 1: The evening arrived: the boys took their places. The master, in his black
attire, stationed himself at the in front of the pit; his sickly assistants ranged
themselves behind him; the blood was served out; and a long grace was Said over
the short commons. The blood disappeared; the boys whispered to each other, and
winked at Oliver; while his next neighbors nudged him. Child as he was, he was
desperate with hunger, and reckless with misery. He rose from the table; and
advancing to the master, basin and spoon in his hand, said: somewhat alarmed at his

Bumble. Oliver brushed away two or three tears that were lingering in his eyes;and

which made him cry. These two causes made him answer in a very low and

Which was a capital way of raising his spirits, and putting him quite at his ease.

Stress And Mindfulness Training Case Study
Education is one of the most important career fields in today s society. A notable
percentage of people in the education field are secondary educators. Without
secondary teachers, there would be no one to teach the upcoming leaders of
tomorrow, and set the foundation for them as they begin their journey into adulthood.
With that said, psychological concepts can be applied to secondary educationas well
as to everyday life. By gaining a better understanding of stress, burnout, major
depressive disorder, and anxiety disorders from a psychological stand point,
secondary educators will be able to better manage their lives inside and outside of the
classroom.

With secondary educators having to write recommendations, manage classrooms,
attend mandatory meetings, grade assignments, and get paid low wages compared to
the amount of time they spend working outside of school hours, it would only make
sense that they would experience some form of burnout. It is extremely important to
make sure that secondary educators find ways to avoid and manage burnout. Burnout
can cause secondary educators to become less involved with their students,
distrustful and nasty towards students and parents. They can begin to care less about
their students learning issues, and become less committed to their job (Roeser et
al.,2013). It could also cause them to acquire a negative outlook on themselves and
feel as though they are unable to perform efficiently in the work place, which can

Essay Paranoia
Paranoia
If it has been confirmed that brain equals behavior, then why don t we fear our own
thought processes? Persons with paranoia disorder are not aware that they are in
fear of their own brains, but in some respect fear of oneself and what ones brain can
create is exactly what persons with paranoia disorder experience. Everyone
experiences small doses and bouts of paranoia on nearly a daily basis, but not
everyone exists on its affects. Those with paranoia disorder deal with a constant
nagging that they cannot control because it tends to control them, hence your brain
as your enemy. Though the causes of paranoia are not clearly defined in either social
or medical fields, the obvious truth is that paranoia stems from the brain ... Show

Biologically some studies of schizophrenia and other psychosis have shown actual
irregularities in the composition and functions of a paranoid brain. The search
[for abnormal brain chemistry] has become very complex, as more and more of
the chemical substances that carry messages from one nerve cell to another the
neurotransmitters have been discovered (1). Many examinations of the paranoid
brain have shown irregularities in the firing of neural circuits and decreased
activity in the prefrontal cortex causing what is assumed to be an impaired ability
to judge whether their [a person s] fears are rational (6). Does simple misfiring
cause paranoia disorder or just paranoia itself, which is perpetuated by a brain that
insists upon creating fear within the individual? If everyone s neurotransmitters fall
out of place now and than, what judges true paranoia? Is it created through an
education of fear and insecurity or is completely biological, and than of course, is
biology affected by ones surroundings? Whether or not paranoia is created in the
brain and nervous system is a given; it is, however what consumes the brain so much
that forces it to create, or innately have a personality disorder?
Stress is another external factor similar to the idea behind the environments affect on
the upholding of paranoia disorder. Paranoia tends to be more prevalent among

The U.S. Navy uses an award system to publicly recognize outstanding

A Contemporary Issue of an Aging Baby Boomer Generation on Health Care
The baby boomer generation will have tremendous impacts on health care as they
continue to age and experience health issues. The impacts will show a significant
financial difference in the very near future than what the impacts look like today for
all health care organizations across the country. The baby boomergeneration began
between 1946 and 1964. Throughout the 18 year time span, over 76.4 million people
were born. By 1964, this made up over 40 percent of the total US population. Today,

Depending on the illness and chronic conditions that the baby boomer generation
will have, health care costs will rise to receive these services. The top 5 chronic
conditions are hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis and obesity. It is
the perception that gatekeeping reduces health care costs in the United States and
it is a very effective strategy that exists today in most organizations. A dedicated
primary care physician will take the time to spend with their patients to review
their concerns and go over their basic preliminary findings such as blood pressure,
weigh and personal issues as an attempt to build a relationship. Patients satisfaction
with and trust in their doctors will remain high only if the public believes the trusts
are acting on their behalf, rather than making decisions in their own financial
interests. In the United States, some of the harshest criticism of gatekeeping has
resulted from the public s perception that medical decision making was unduly
influenced by financial considerations (Forrest, 2003). Over 37 million baby
boomers will experience having to manage more than one chronic condition by
2030 resulting in an annual cost of $13,000 annually ( American Hospital
Association , 2007). The forecasted costs for health care from a national perspective
were $2579 in 2003 and will continue to rise 20 percent by 2030 (Martini,

paper will focus on the process of verbal and nonverbal communication as well as the
components of each. It outline the formal and informal channels of criminal channels.
This paper will also list the different barriers to effective communication within a

Both formal and informal means of communication help facilitate the transfer of
important information within a law enforcement organization.
Barriers to effective communication
There are four basic barriers that hinder effective communication, emotional barriers,
physical barriers, semantic barriers, and ineffective listening. All of these barriers
separately or combined can contribute to a lack of effective communication.
To communicate successfully one must express thoughts and emotions clearly.
Sometimes the emotional barriers can hinder one s ability to effectively
communicate. Physical barriers are the facets of the surroundings that obstruct the
flow of information. This could be radios which are not working correctly and prevent
the officer from transmitting his communications. Anything that prevents or slows
down the progress of the giving or receiving of information is considered a physical
barrier. Semantics is another form of communication barrier, which results in the
inability to communicate clearly. Semantic problems occur when there is a failure to
agree on the connotation of certain expressions (Wallace Roberson, 2009). The
meaning of certain terms may not be interpreted the same by different people.
Ineffective listening is the final barrier to effective communications. This can be
described as not receiving what the other person is relaying. The person on the

Batman Archetype
The modern world is filled with different kinds of heroes. To some, heroes are
sports figures who are winning not only on the playing field but also in life. To
others, heroes are family members or in most cases fictional characters,
(superheroes), who are fighting against evil. That being said everyone has a hero
figure that he or she views as a role model, it is who they are striving to be like. An
example of the modern hero that will be discussed in the remainder of this paper
comes from The Batman Trilogy, which happens to be Batman himself. When people
talk about different heroes the thing they tend to not realize is that the hero is a part
of a characterarchetype, also known as archetypal hero. The idea of archetypes was
first introduced... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Typically, after the journey, the hero acquires useful skills, such as, wisdom,
strength, courage, etc. The journey is never easy and according to Joseph
Campbell, the hero s journey consists of twelve stages: ordinary world, call to
adventure, refusal of the call, meeting with the mentor, crossing the threshold,
encounter of tests, approach to the inmost cave, ordeal, reward, the road back,
resurrection, and return with elixir (Michigan State University). Since there are so
many stages only the five main ones will be described. The first stage of the
journey is the call to adventure. The hero s normal world is shaken up by an event,
(at times a tragedy), that causes him or her to go on a quest to search for answers. In
the movie Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne s parents get murdered, which results in him
leaving the city to go on a journey. The second stage is meeting with the mentor. On
his journey the hero meets a mentor who is there to help/teach the hero all the
necessary tasks for the trials to come. In the same movie, Bruce Wayne meets his
mentor Henri Ducard, (played by Liam Neeson), who trains Bruce to become an
exceptional fighter and to learn to confront the guilt/anger and face the truth (Batman
Beings). The third stage is crossing the threshold. Crossing the threshold signifies that
the hero is fully committed to the journey and is willing to complete the

Inventions and Ideas Of The 1960 s
Have you ever wondered where some of the most important things in our lives come
from or who made them? The 1960 s was one of the most influential decades ever
with so many new inventions and innovations. Some of the best inventions were
made in the 1960 s. Most of the inventions that were made then are still used today.

Some of the technological inventions were, The handheld calculator, ram chip,
compact disk, basic computer language, A.T.M, computer mouse, barcode scanner,
and ARPANET. The handheld calculator was invented by Jack Kilby who referred
to it as Caltech and is still used in schools today. Another invention that
revolutionized this era was the ram chip invented by Robert Dennard January, 1
1968 which allows you to randomly save information to a computer chip in
random sequence. Inventions sprouted up through the entire decade in the U.S (
Famous Inventions Of The 1960 s ). Another invention was the barcode scanner
which was made by NCR Corp. January 1, 1969 is of course still used and made a
very heavy impact in american lives even today. Everytime you go to the grocery
store and you check out they have to scan the barcode on the item for the price, so it
is still very relevant. Without these technological advancement and inventions where

Comparing Abrahamic, Monotheistic, And The Sacred Texts
Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are the three major religions in the world with
fourteen million followers for Judaism, 2.1 billion for Christianity, and 1.5 billion
for Islam. While many people today only see the differences between the three major
monotheistic religions, they are in fact much more similar than they are different.
Each religion is Abrahamic, monotheistic, and the sacred texts all contain teachings.
These religions are considered Abrahamic because they all consider Abraham the
Biblical patriarch or father. In Judaism, there is a story behind him questioning the
faith of the gods. The story goes as one day, in his father s shop, he smashed all the
statues of the gods except for the largest one. When the father came back,... Show

They also believe that he created the universe that we live in now. In Islam, Muslims
believe that Allah is the only god. Muhammed was on top of a hilltop when the
angel Gabriel came to him and told about the revelations from god. He believes
Allah already revealed himself through Jesus and Moses. Muslims must say, I
witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammed is the prophet of Allah,
when they wake up and before they go to sleep. Jews believe in the god, Yahweh or
also called Elohim. Abraham was dedicated to Yahweh, so he and his wife went to
Canaan where the god made a convent agreement with him. To faithfully follow
Yahweh, he changed their names from Abram and Sarai to Abraham and Sarah. It
is controversial whether they all believe in the same god and different names or
not, but overall they all believe in one god who they follow and worship. All three
religions contain sacred texts that all contain laws or teachings. The Hebrew Bible
(known as the Old Testament to Christians) is the foundation of Judaism. The first
five books are called the Torah. The Torah means the law and the religious law,
Halakhah, is taught in a separate book. However, the Torah, contains the teachings
god has provided about himself, his purposes, and how people should obey him in
every aspect of their life. The Bible is the sacred text of Christianity. It consists of the
Old and New Testament.
Steroids for Medical Use
If someone did something, they probably enjoy it and relish what they do, so
naturally they would want to improve. For some, the desire may be so strong that
they could consider doing an illegal substance. Everyone has most likely heard of
steroids and wonder what they are. Steroids were first found naturally from
hormones. (E) Later could be made into a synthetic drug. The most known steroids
are anabolic and cortisone steroids. (D) This means it can be created in a science
lab. Steroids can be taken either orally or injected directly into the muscle. (C,D)
So someone could take steroids by a pill or inject a liquid via needle. Some side
effects of steroids can be reverse easily, by just stopping to use the drug. (D)
Steroids were first used in World War Two. Steroids were used to increase
aggression in older Nazi soldiers. Steroids would increase aggression due to
something known as roid rage which makes the user angry. They were not only
used on soldier, but also used on P.O.W. (E) Prisoners were given steroids so they
would be stronger, making them live a little longer and to increase production in
forced labor camps. Steroids are used for many different reasons, even to this day.
Steroids are used for many different reasons because of such benefits as medical
use; increase of strength or for athletics. Steroids have been used for medical
reasons, including treatment of a health issue or just to help a sufferers deal with
illnesses a little easier. First of all,
Beauty s Take On Life
Beauty s Take on Life
Elisabeth KГјbler Ross states that people are like stained glass windows. They
sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in; their true
beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. She explains what the two
types of beauty are; inner and outer beauty. Beauty is a viewpoint and it depends on
different factors based on the person s liking. People make first impressions based on
one s physical beauty, although it is their inner beauty that makes them distinct. Inner
and outer beauty defines people in how it is achieved, how society and culture view it,
and the risks related to beauty.
Outer beauty is the physical beauty, while inner beauty is who you are. Outer beauty
is your complexion, appearance, physical features, and clothing. Outer beauty is
inherited from your parents and the individual does not get to pick what they will
look like. Outer beauty is programmed through DNA from family. Inner beauty is
formed by your experiences, mindset, and personality. Outer beauty changes over
time due to exterior and environmental changes, while inner beauty does not really
change. Usually over time, the person becomes wiser and develops more qualities.
Outer beauty may be manipulated with makeup to achieve the look that is desired.
Inner beauty is difficult to mask or change, since it defines the person. Outer beauty
is how people make a first impression of that person, but that impression usually
changes once they get to
International Criminal Law And International Law
Introduction:
International Criminal Law can be described as a public international law. It deals
with international and transnational crimes among the member states. The
International Criminal Laws are designed to forbid some kinds of conducts or
behaviours generally viewed as very consequential atrocities. These laws also make
sure that the perpetrators of such heinous criminal conducts are accountable for their
acts. Mainly, the International Criminal Law deals with war crimes, genocide, crimes
of aggression and the crimes against humanity. Besides, the International Criminal
Court (ICC) governed by the Rome Statute, which is a multilateral treaty and serves
as a foundational and governing document of ICC. Another way, it can be described
as an intergovernmental organisation and international tribunal. The ICC is the
headway through which International criminal law develops since its inception. It is
situated in The Hague in Netherlands. Currently, there are 122 states which are
parties to the Rome Statute, by ratifying the Rome Statute, states become member
states of the ICC. The International Criminal Law (ICL) has been started performing
with Nuremberg Tribunal for War Criminals after 1945. Actually, the Nuremberg and
Tokyo trials addressed war crimes, crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity
committed during the Second World War@. The International Military Tribunal sat in
Nuremberg, which prosecuted Germany perpetrators while the International Military
State Sponsor Terrorism Case Study
For the countries that State Sponsor Terrorism (SST), the United States has several
different ways it combats and handles these rogue nations, mostly through the use of
sanctions. One country that has become a repeat offender of sponsoring terrorism
is Iran. Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran s clerical leadership has worked with
a range of terrorist groups to advance its own overall interests in the Middle East and
abroad (Byman, #2, 2015, Pg.1).
Over thirty years later, this use of terrorism has continued and remains an important
foreign policy instrument for the Iranian regime as it antagonizes the neighbors in the
Middle East and with the United States (Byman #2, 2015, Pg. 2). Iran has been
considered a State Sponsor of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
1). This looming radiological attack in Syria backed by the Iranian regime, elected
to employ State Sponsored Terrorism as its primary means, due to desiring an
attack that was much bigger than anything before, but also to be able to use this
attack as a statement piece as to show how the Iranian regime exactly feels about
the U.S. involvement in the Middle East. The Iranian government has several
strategic goals for their way of doing so called business, as the U.S. knows and
calls it, State Sponsor Terrorism. Associating with terrorist groups and employing
them to do the regime s dirty work, keeps Iran s hands clean to some extent. It is
just like hiring a hit man . By staying out of the actual attack, although supporting
it, doesn t make you the aggressor and therefore keeps you somewhat out of reach
for a counter attack. They way the Iranian regime views it, you are technically not
the responsible party and are therefore not the target. In the past, Iran has worked
with and through terrorist groups like Hizballah or using its own operatives in a
clandestine way, which enables the regime to be able to distance itself from attacks
and thus often evade responsibility (Byman #2, 2015, Pg. 4). An example of this
was in the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing, where Iran was ultimately found to be
responsible, but proving Iran s culpability made it far harder to
Frost At Midnight Analysis
In a conversation poem titled Frost at Midnight, romantic poet Samuel Taylor
Coleridge creates a persona of himself who spends the duration of the poem having
a one sided conversation with his newly born baby. The narrator laments his own
childhood, but finds solace in knowing that his baby has potential for a better life
than he, since the baby will have a nature centered upbringing. The narrator contrasts
constricted and expansive imagery, enumerated and enjambed sentences, and
alienated and familiar diction to underline the differences between his own
childhood education, which was spent studying books, and the childhood education
he hopes his baby will have. The narrator suggests that nature will offer his baby a
childhood education superior to his own because nature will teach the baby to be
one with the world, allowing him to feel peace and serenity no matter the
circumstances. In this poem, the narrator opens up with a serene scene of a winter
night or so it seems. Although the narrator describes an externally cozy, peaceful
scene, he unveils a discordant heart, as suggested by the restless tone he uses. During
this silent night, the narrator watches a piece of soot flicker over the fire: Only that
film, which fluttered on the grate, / Still flutters there, the sole unquiet thing.
Methinks, its motion in this hush of nature / Gives it dim sympathies with me who
lives, / Making it a companionable form (15 19). In other words, the narrator
associates himself with
Ulcerative Colitis
Introduction: What is Ulcerative Colitis? Just from the name, you can guess that this
disease concerns ulcers. But does this entail anything else? Let us find out in this
article about the disease that still has its causes unverified by the world. Ulcerative
Colitis (UC) is a disease/disorder of the Large intestine. It occurs in the colonand
rectum areas only. When food passes through the Large Intestine, the body s
immune system may mistake the food materials, bacteria, etc as foreign invading
agents and sends White blood cells (WBC) to defend the body. This causes chronic
inflammation and ulceration of the large intestine, which causes severe pain and
discomfort for the patient. This is why this disease falls under the category of
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and is also referred to as an autoimmune disease.
Furthermore, we still don t... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are considered as auto immune disorders and both of them successfully fall
under the criteria of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) but they work in different
areas of the body. Crohn s disease can occur in any part of the Gastro Intestinal Tract
(GIT), while Ulcerative Colitis only affects the colon and rectum of the large
intestine. Again, Crohn s Disease can affect all layers of the bowel while Ulcerative
Colitis, can harm only the linings of the colon. These are the major differences
between them. Conclusion
Though Ulcerative Colitis is not a disease that can cause certain death, but it can
lead to the creation of many other which have high mortality rates. Such as, strokes
and colon cancer. We know that there is bleeding when Ulcerative Colitis occurs.
So, during blood clotting, increased amounts of blood clots also form in the brain
causes strokes. Again, the breaking of the mucus layer in the colon can give rise to
cancerous lesions, which develops to colon cancer later
Argumentative Essay On Adam Sandler

Unquestionably, it was one of his career best performance based series of movies
that makes the people laugh repeatedly. Grown Ups 2010 episode grossed $272
million in total and its sequel fragment ended up with the business worth of $248

The blame of over charging is due to his own mistakes for he picks off beam
movies repeatedly to work on, which mostly disliked by viewers and consequently
unable to seize a good market chunk. He performs his role with a natural acting and
he is off doubt a good comedian as well, if he will pick a right movie, then there isn

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Essay
The Hunger Games is the first book that makes up the famous trilogy written by
Suzanne Collins. Katniss, the book s main character, is a sixteen year old girl,
who lives in Panem, a country divided in 13 different districts. Each year, a reaping
is hold, where every district chooses one boy and one girl to participate to the
games. The participants have to kill each other for their survival, and only one
person can end up as a winner. Because of Katniss ingenuity and strategies, both
tributes from her district were able to survive and get through this challenge. This

The rich are also always more prepared and have additional advantage as they are
all trained before the Games and see it as an honour to participate. This can also be
a representation of our world, where wealthier people have everything they need,
whilst in the countries were a large amount of poverty is present, the population has
to suffer and work to obtain the essentials to live. The title Hunger Games evokes a
clear message: the way people living in the districts see this terrifying event as
something fun, calling it a game . The whole event is shown on screens in all the
different districts and people gather and enjoy watching their tributes. This clearly
relates to a televised sporting event in which participants compete to win. The
enthusiasm of the population is seen especially during the opening ceremony with the
pounding music, the cheers . Moreover, the Games recall the gladiatorial Games of
Ancient Rome in which armed competitors, some voluntary and others not, would
fight to death. The fact that the games are televised and discussed in Panem s media
also recalls today s reality television, and the novel consequently draws a parallel
between the gladiatorial Games and reality TV. Throughout the novel, Katniss and her
team use external

New Horizons and Its Mission
The New Horizons space probe is an interesting piece of technology. We ve sent this
probe into the depths of space, farther than any other probe has traveled. This probe

The Atlas V 551 also has 5 Aerojet Solid Rocket Boosters to add extra thrust power to
the launch. The boosters burn for 94 seconds and they are all rigged to go off in

An Interstage Adapter is used to connect the parts of the rocket with different
diameters. There are two types; the Cylindrical Interstage Adapter (0.32 meters in

Combatting the Issue of Human Trafficking
Many organizations have formed to establish several resolutions for combating the
issue of human trafficking , both locally and nationally. I chose to investigate two
existing social awareness campaigns located in Ohio. The reasons I decided to
explore these two organizations is because of the obvious, that my classmates and I
are in the state of Ohiobut overall, it is due to the fact that this state rank s number
five in the nation for human trafficking. There are explanations behind the ranking of
Ohio for this issue. The first explanation is due to the inner city centers and country
counties, which included a big immigrant population. The second explanation is due
to five main highways located throughout Ohio. These highways make it convenient
for human traffickers (Ohio State Bar Association, 2014). The first campaign is
called Second Chance, and it is located in Toledo, Ohio. Second Chance s mission
statement is To offer supportive services to women and youth affected by or at risk

Transactional and Transformational Leadership
Leadership has been an important topic in the social sciences for many years.
Recently, renewed interest in the concept of leadership has been aroused. The
resurgence of interest in studying the topic of leadership appears to be accompanied
by an acceptance of the distinction between transactional and transformational
leadership. (Den Hartog, Van Muijen and Koopman, 1997, P.41) Transactional and

These wrong decisions made a big loss of Ford Motor Company. From these two
examples we can see that Henry s management relationship depends on the power and
hierarchy. Maybe, to some extent, Henry Ford is the dictator of Ford Motor Company.
в—† Motivation and Reward The typical characteristic of transactional leadership
is the process of exchanging. Employees use their labor to change for rewards, and
leaders use motivation to change for performance and obedience. One way or
another, the leader and follower agree, explicitly or implicitly, that desired
follower behaviors will be rewarded, while undesirable behaviors will draw out
punishment. Henry Ford was a pioneer of welfare capitalism designed to improve
the lot of his workers and especially to reduce the heavy turnover that had many
departments hiring 300 men per year to fill 100 slots. (Retrieved June 10, 2008,

в—† Other Leadership
Henry Ford management also embodied other leadership. Let s discuss some of
them. Transformational leadership Transformation leaders think more about the
relationship with followers. They always want to give a good influence on employees
and to provide good salary to employees. So Henry Ford started the 40 hours week

The City Of The Chicago City
The Cloud Gate that is also called The Bean, is the best attraction in the Chicago
city. As so many tourists come from different region of world to visit the Chicago
city, they see that shiny bean as a selfie place. The bean is in Millennium Park
which is open from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. with free admission. The visitors
traveling can get to the park using primary Chicagopublic transportations either bus
or subway. Using CTA, one can take red line subway train to Randolph and from
there it is a short walk. The bean is the centerpiece of AT T plaza at millennium park

and it get extremely busy in weekends. It is surrounded by huge tall building which
are reflected on the bean by various shapes. As people go around the city, they see
different sculptures all around, but some people think that the Cloud Gateis the
Chicago s icon. The tourist does not miss to see that icon because it s a place for
taking memorable pictures and looking at the skyline of the Chicago city on the

artists who submitted their sketches to build a sculpture in the park, the millennium

Neutron Stars Research Paper
Before a neutron star is created it is a supernova. Supernova s are difficult to see in
our galaxy because dust is blocking our view. When there s a change in the core in a
star a supernova occurs.
When giant stars die in supernova and their core collapse that is when a neutron star
is created. This neutron star is several times bigger than the sun.Because the neutrons
are tightly put together into a super dense object the supernova is very heavy it weighs
about 100 million tons.
Neutron stars typically have a surface temperature around 600,000 K.The magnetic
fields are between 10 to the 8th power and 10 to the 15 power as strong as that of
the sun.A neutron star is part of the binary system the survived the deadly blast from

Max Weber Sociology Of Religion
Along with Durkheim and Marx, Weber was one of the most influential thinkers in
the foundation of the field of sociology, Weber namely in establishing the subject of
the sociology of religion. Weber s mother was a devout Calvinist, while his father
was involved in politics and intellectual pursuits. In addition to his vast education in
many fields, Weber was also a jurist, and a teacher at the Universities of Berlin and
Heidelberg. Max Weberfavoured a hermeneutical approach to studying religion
(McCutcheon 2007, p.188) in a method known as Verstehen. This refers to wishing
to understand the deeper significance of something, in this case religion, by
studying it from the perspective and experience of another, and the meaning they
then attach to it. Since religious beliefs affect people s behaviour, Weber believed
that religions could have profound effects on societies and their development
(Connolly 1999, p.199). While Weber, like Marx, saw religion as emerging from
suffering, he had a more positive attitude towards it, seeing it as having benefits.
He saw religion as being something which gave humans meaning in life and a way
to respond to suffering (Herling 2015, p.74). An example the Christian doctrine of
original sin can serve as an explanation for evil in the world, thereby offering a
solution for people to reconcile and cope with their suffering in the world and their
lives (Weber 1965, p.139). Unlike Marx, he did not see it as being an inherently
negative or
Understanding The Relationship Between Mind Wandering
And...
On the other hand, this second study example does not provide the added validity of
triangulation in the methodology. Bunce et al. (2010) conducted a study whereby
students used clicker technology to indicate when their attention was distracted from
their lecture content in three fifty minute chemistry lectures. Lecturing,
demonstrating and quizzing, although not experimentally manipulated, was
implemented, and it was found that following these interspersed sessions that bouts
of distraction during lectures was reduced. According to Bunce et al., Self reports
upon distraction measured attentiveness to lecture content. Although results of this
study are informative, as mentioned above, self reports are limited without the
combining with other techniques. To assess mindwandering and the effects of active
learning interventions, the frequency and timing of these would need to be
manipulated specifically. This type of study, however, is particularly relevant to
improving understanding the relationship between mind wandering and higher
education. In contrast, this extremely comprehensive study is broad ranging in its
outcomes. In a controlled investigation, the authors, Mrazek et al, (2013), used a
mixed factorial pretest posttest design. Forty eight randomised university students
met for forty five minutes, four times per week for four weeks, to do either
mindfulness training or nutrition training in a control group. Mrazek et al, (2013)

Emily Dickinson was one of the most ambiguous authors of her time. Her poetry
remains a mystery to so many readers and her lack of biographical information
makes her writing even more intriguing. Dickinson spent most of her life away from
society, therefore, very few people knew how she viewed the aspects of life, let alone
knew what her writing meant. Her interpretations of concepts such as religion, nature,
and death are often seen as contradicting and pinning one specific thesis on her views
is difficult because she viewed many things with complexity. Among her poems,
readers see a diversity in her perspectives. For example, she might write one poem
about the beauties of nature and continue to write another poem about the dangers or

Similar ambivalent themes are seen in Dickinson s views of death. Death is
primarily seen in a negative light and she supports that perspective in I heard a Fly
buzz when I died When Dickinson starts this poem, the reader senses a feeling of
control from the narrator. The narrator is ready for death and accepting it; she
writes I willed my keepsakes Signed away/ What portion of me be/ Assignable and
the audience sees her willingness to go. However, There interposed a Fly and this
fly s interruption created a change in tone. The narrator felt the windows fail and
this could be seen as a metaphor for losing her spot in heaven. This poem makes
death seem almost scary and one could assume that Dickinson views death this way.
Contrarily, in I like a look of Agony she portrays death as a serene, authentic
concept. The narrator says there is no faking death and that s what they most
appreciate of death. Dickinson creates a relaxing tone associated with death and upon
reading this certain poem, a reader may assume she views death as calm and genuine.
Emily Dickinson also wrote plenty about nature, seeing as she was constantly around
it rather than actual humans. Her views of nature vary from optimistic and
intoxicating to frightening and threatening. In her poem There s a certain Slant of
light , she carries a holy and amazed mood throughout it. Using words like Heavenly
and Cathedral support the holiness in the text. The narrator is amazed at the

Early Ambulation After Hip Surgery Accelerates Recovery

Research studies conducted all over the world, including Japan, Italy, Ireland,
Denmark, Australia, and the United States, have explored the effects of early
ambulation. Early ambulation is defined as less than 48 hours after surgery. The
purpose of this paper is to review current research regarding implementation of early
mobilization in the post surgical hip patients that are 65 years of age or older. Early
ambulation has been linked to accelerated recovery in the elderly who have
undergone hip surgery. Accelerated recovery may... Show more content on

They also found a decrease length in hospital stay from 7.8 to 4.9 days for those that
ambulated the day of surgery. The authors of this study contributed these findings to
nurse led efforts with early and more aggressive ambulation. Nurses led off this new
intervention with an information day, which consisted of informing patients (in
groups) of the accelerated path, and also to prepare the patients for surgery through
individual consultations with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurse. However, in
2012 a study conducted in Japan addressed the question of whether nursing care
predicted length of stay in older adults (65 years and older) that had hip surgery and
found a lower incidence of complications, but did not find a significant effect on
patient s length of stay. (Kondo, Sada, Yamaguchi, Fujimoto, 2012) Nevertheless, the
incorporation of nursing care with the prevention of complications, encouragement of
weight bearing, and controlled pain is believed to contribute to shorter length of stay.
Reduction of Complications Getting out of bed accelerates blood circulation and
respiratory functions contributing to the prevention of complications (Kondo et al.,
2012). Kamel, Iqbal, Mogallapu, Maas, and Hoffman (2003) tested the hypothesis
that time to ambulation after hip surgery impacts the frequency of post operative
complication and
Montreal By Night Analysis
The documentation, through motion pictures, of Montreal over the decades,
characterizes this city of owning a vibrant energy and engaging atmosphere. A
common factor from these films portrays Montreal s never ending construction and
poor conditions due to the ancient infrastructures. Nonetheless, many changes have
induced that could be interpreted as positive or as negative consequences,
depending on one s perspective. The architecture of the city has altered due to the
hope of creating suitable living areas and notably, its people and culture have
changed through time as well. From the films seen in class, Montreal by Night from
1947, ГЂ St Henri le Cinq Septembre from 1962 and La MГ©moire des Anges from
2008, exhibits the modifying evolution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To deviate from the religious aspect of these films, the children in this film behaved
stress less and relaxed in the morning. Moreover, they did not carry backpacks, or
any school supplies for that matter, depicting the change of the importance of
education in contrast to now. Nonetheless, the setting, where the family
documented on that day, is set in the main living area of the small house. On its
wall, a large religious cross was hanging from it. Although, few years forward, in
the film La MГ©moire des Anges, there s a scene towards the end, which depicts an
older and a younger man who lived in a multi family building. Besides that fact, their
next door neighbors were loud, therefore the young man decides to strike the wall to
warn the neighbours to quiet down. The wall that he began hitting had a religious
cross hanging from it as well. Notably, this cross is significantly smaller than the one
from ГЂ St Henri le Cinq Septembre film. Moreover, the young man s hits on the
wall caused the cross to displace, which he does not acknowledge and then leaves the
room. However, the older man stood up to fix it himself. From these scenes, religion,
according to the people of Montreal, have changed to the point where it has been an
aspect of many a key part of their life, however later on this becomes to have little
significance to the next generation

The Symbolism Of Clothing In Joseph s Story
Throughout different forms of literature, clothing is symbolically used to represent
the status of the main character at changing intervals of his or her life. Just as
clothing that is worn today can send messages about who we are as people, the same
phenomena can be said about clothing of past generations, as well as within a literary
context. Which garments are worn, and in fact, how they are worn, can lead to
identifications about culture, gender, wealth, socioeconomic status, and religion. Also
indicative of these characteristics is the absences of certain articles of clothing. In
Joseph s story, the garment motif is used as an obvious symbol, throughout the
entirety of the narrative to represent downfalls and uprises in the plot. This use of
symbolism may also reveal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many references to clothing can be found in the Old Testament. The general term
used was beged and it referred to both women and men s attire. It is used over 200
times (Batten 150). Within the text, nakedness or little clothing is seen in a
negative light. This may be due to the fact that it is sometimes representative of
low social status and may lead to dishonor or disgrace of one s family in the eyes
of the community. Conversely, when clothes are given it is seen as a restoration of
dignity (Batten 151). For example, in the book of Numbers, it was declared that
tassels must be worn on clothing as a symbol of God s covenant with Israel (15:37
41). This is because tassels or fringes in the hem was seen as visual evidence of an
elevated special status. In fact, the more decorated the hem of a person s clothing, the
more wealth and power the person possessed (Bertman 121 122). Additionally,
evidence has been found that indicates this ritual dates back as far as the ninth
century by the Assyrians (Bertman
Volunteering In Public Schools
Many schools need to push students to participate in volunteering services to receive
their high school diploma. By students being part of an active role in the community,
they are capable of becoming responsible leaders, learning new things, and helping
those in need in their community. Volunteering is beneficial to students because it
helps them become more mature and it helps them get ready for the real world.
Students need to help the communitywhether it is forced or not.
The young minds of high school students are not always thinking about those around
them, they are more focused on friends, school work, and sports. While this is not
necessarily bad, they often forget what is right in front of them. When high school
students are forced to volunteer, they get a clear perspective on what is really
happening around them. They get an eye opening view of unemployment , hunger,
and poverty. By students volunteering , they get to help those in need and realize
what the real world is like. They complete activities that morph them into a strong,
responsible, independent leader. By helping feed the homeless or participating for a
marathon to fight cancer, they are given the opportunity to grow and let their minds

Students are often close minded when it comes to learning, but when they are forced
to volunteer they learn new things that are beneficial to their future. When helping
others, students learn how to think outside the box and to be innovative. Volunteering
can give students the chance to explore and be creative when helping those in need.
Being innovative and creative can give students the chance to excel in their
academics and school events. They take problem solving to a whole new level that
they would have never thought of . Community service is a useful tool to give
students a chance on a second outlook on
Causes Of Intentional Fire
Fire, one of the most well known powers to humans since the first day they
discovered it in ancient period, has contributed unlimited assistance to construct our
civilization and society. Similar to everything in the world, fire not only benefits our
life but also harms and brings us concern about our safety. Because fire does not
contain intelligence or consciousness, it cannot harm us intentionally; however, fire
is able to be caused by someone willingly. Any willful or malicious burnings or
attempting to burn, with or without intent to defraud, a dwelling house, public
building, motor vehicle or aircraft, personal property of another are all defined as
arson, which is the crimeagainst property (FBI s Uniform Crime Reporting 2014). In

First, as a tool, fire can be a lethal weapon that can cause a huge area of effect which
it limits victims ability to escape or resist. Next, different from other lethal weapon,
fire is unable to control, which there is no way to stop it as the fire spreads. When
the fire has become a real threat to a person, neither the victim nor the murderer can
predict the result of that. Generally, that scenario will end with a tragedy that the
person is murdered by the fire that is ignited by the murderer. In order to secure our
personal safety, arson should be considered as the crime against a person in addition
to the crime against property so that we may consider arson as felony, warning those
potential arsonists that committing arson is not a babyish thing and there will be
terrible result if anyone
Sequo Della Signoria And Doges Palace Research Paper
Palazzo della Signoria (fig.13.15) and Doges Palace (fig.13.32) clearly differ in
appearance, however also in purpose. In this essay project I will attempt to describe
these differences, explain how artists, social economics and political factors might be
used to account for these differences as well.
Starting with Doge s Palace, this monument was put under construction in Venice in
1340 (Davies et al. 464). The design of the building had open space and an airy
atmosphere, like most of the other buildings in Venice, the construction lacked a
battle ready impenetrability about itself with little to no defensive design whatsoever
(464). The safe and prestigious appearance of the Doge s Palace was influenced by
Islamic, Gothic, and Byzantine architecture (Davies et al. 465). When it was closer to
St. Mark s Cathedral, the Venetian Palace was expanded in size and space because a

It has been enlarged and remolded in later years also. When the ruling Medici
family moved to another palace in the 16th century, the building was also called
the Palazzo Vecchio (translation: old palace) (448). The Palazzo della Signoria
was given a more protected appearance, attributed by its heavy parapets, sturdy
stone walls, few windows, and a high tower (448). The stones in the Palazzo della
Signoria are purposefully left to be rough and rusticated in order to convey
fortification and strength (448). However, the two upper stones reveal smoother
masonry and more graceful windows, which were pointed (Davies et al.448). The
tall tower is intended to be symbolic of civil pride and to provide a safe vantage
point for observation (448). Though rigid in its appearance the Palazzo della Signoria
is not without its furnishing as it has fresco painting by Giorgio Vasari and sculptures

An organization s competitive position is determined by how well its board of
directors are able to discharge their duties and responsibilities. The organization
should consist of leaders who are able to direct their company forward with the
effective accountability and corporate social responsibility (ST Engineering, n.d).
Similarly, at Singapore Technologies (ST) the board of the company is accountable
to the shareholders for the overall company s performance. They are to ensure that
there is a transparency in the system and good governance is not only practised at
the Board level but also throughout the organization. ST organization comprises 14
Directors, and 1 alternate director (Corporate Governance, 2014). The mission of the
board provides leadership and guidance to the management of individual sector of
ST. All sectors within the company are guided by the corporate governance
framework developed by ST itself. The organization strongly believes that good
corporate governance is not only the responsibility of the board, but also the
management and every level of the company (Corporate Governance, 2014).
Singapore Technologies use the top down approach to ensure an affective and a

The Problems And Challenges Of Performance Management
Part 3 Empirical chapter
Discussion of the Problems and Challenges of performance management
Performance management mostly is not successful as expected in the public sector.
According to Her Majesty s Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland (2005) a
thematic inspection of performance management noted that though performance
management was substantially developed , a long way is still needed to go before
everyone was responsible for providing a good service and many areas of
performance management in the early stages of implementation existed as well .
There are many implementation reasons causing these problems, for instance, the
reduction of government spending (Gianakis, 2002), or purely a tool for management
rather than a tool for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Technical problems refers to the indicators and the data, information collection,
interpretation and analysis. They are preponderantly difficult problems (Pollanen,
2005; Adcroft and Willis, 2005) and especially in terms of data quality (Black et
al., 2001), the choice of indicators (Black et al., 2001; Bevan and Hood, 2006;
Carvalho et al., 2006), validation (Evans, 2004; Carlin, 2004), reporting (Pollanen,
2005; Adcroft and Willis, 2005) and usage and interpretation (Neely et al., 1995;
Wilcox and Bourne, 2003). Nevertheless, organisations are focusing on improving
the technical problems of their indicators (Pollitt, 2005). Secondly, systems
problems are related to the bigger picture issues, i.e. integrating performance
systems into the original systems (Gianakis, 2002), a lack of strategic view which
encourages short term thinking (Neely et al., 1995), the ambiguity of performance
objectives (Pollanen, 2005), sub optimisation (Neely et al., 1995; Pollitt, 2000;
Gianakis, 2002; Adcroft and Willis, 2005) and the cost of performance
management (Train and Williams, 2000; Holzer and Yang, 2004; Pollanen, 2005).
The third kind of problem are the significant people issues and their involvement
inside the PM system among inter multiple stakeholders (Black et al., 2001; Wang
and Berman, 2001; Gianakis, 2002; McAdam et al., 2005). These issues can be
caused by a
The Earth Has Vast Oceans
Out of the eight planets in our solar system, Earth is the only planet circling the
Sun on which life as we know it could (and does) exist. Unlike any other planet, the
Earth has vast oceans with millions of small islands in them, green vegetation,
huge landmasses, different topographies, like the mountains, ice caps and deserts,
all of which present an amazing variety of color and texture. be the extremely cold
Antarctica, where hardy microscopic beings thrive in ponds, tiny wingless insects
live in patches of moss and lichen, and plants grow and flower yearly or the
extremely warm desert of Sahara plants such as date palms and acacia put down
long roots to reach life sustaining water or often the seeds of flowering plants
sprout quickly after a rain and complete their growing cycle and producing seeds in
a matter of days, before the soil dries out, one can find some form of life other in
almost every ecological niche on earth. From the outer layers of the atmosphere to
the deep sea beds at the bottom of the oceans and from the coldest poles to the
warmest equator, life thrives here. Till date, no convincingly true evidence of life
has been found on any planet. [1] While the Earth has been around for 4.6 billion
years and our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern
form of humans is claimed to have evolved only about 200,000 years ago. The
present civilization it is only about six thousand years old, and the industrialization
era started in full
Essay On Cronyism And Nepotism
The problem that the researchers intended to study was clearly stated. In problem that
existed is that due to favouritism, nepotism and cronyism the vacancies and job
opportunities in Pakistan are not being fulfilled base on the applicant s qualification,
experience and other necessary skills. The problem is of practical importance,
because it helps to determine the significant impact that favouritism, nepotism and
cronyism within the working environment of the public sectororganizations of
Pakistan. The purpose of the study, as stated in the abstract, is to examine the effects
of favouritism, nepotism and cronyism on job satisfaction in the public sector
organizations of Pakistan. The researchpaper also hopes to determine the validity of
the following three hypothesis:
1.Favouritism will have a negative relationship on job satisfaction
2.Nepotism will have a negative relationship on job satisfaction
3.Cronyism will have a negative relationship on job satisfaction Key terms that exist
within the research paper are clearly identified and defined. These key terms are
nepotism, favouritism, cronyism, job satisfaction and public sector organization.

The data were quantitative data and was represented in a tabular form. The data
collected has disproved the original hypothesis as it was discovered that favouritism,
nepotism and cronyism all have a positive effect on job satisfaction, in the Pakistan.
The result may be due to certain limitation that limited the effectiveness of the
research. Perhaps the two major weakness that resulted in the hypothesis being
disproved are the study was not conducted from the organizational point of view, but
from the employees point of view and also that the study was conducted within the
public sector, and may have led to different result should it have been conducted
within the private
Benefits Of Fantasy Football
Fantasy Football is a game that belongs to a billion dollar industry called fantasy
sports wherein players, aptly called team owners, can acquire or draft an entire team
of real life professional football players. Arranged into leagues that mimic real ones,
Fantasy Football participants gain score points through statistical capabilities or
performances of the real world playerswhich are included in the fantasy rosters of the
respective owners.
In essence, the way to win in Fantasy Football is to always have high quality players.
Since the performance of the real world players can change in between real world
matches, you need to make regular updates or changes to the players in your fantasy
roster to keep up with the fantasy games. This ... Show more content on

To do this you just go the players page in your league s website, there you will find
the list of players to choose from. Commonly, for each player that you acquire, a
corresponding member of your team should be dropped too.
All in all, after acquiring a new player and dropping an old one, your roster will be
changed. But there are other ways of changing players in Football Fantasy and here
they are.
Activating Bench Players To Active Status
One of the most overlooked ways of changing players in an existing lineup is by
simply changing the status of a certain player from bench to active or vice versa.
You can access this function online by simply going to your team s webpage. There
you will find a menu that permits you to change the status of each of the players on
your roster. Always remember to save the changes before you exit the page.
Trading Players
This can be the easiest way of changing the player composition of a Fantasy
Football team. For one, this method of changing players on a team is allowed even
if the season has already started. And more importantly, this method has very few
restrictions; so the process and the agreements that lead to the trading of players is
entirely left to the preferences of the two teams that decide to
David Brower And Dominy In John Mcphee s The River
The River by John McPhee tells the story of a raft trip down the Colorado River
through the Grand Canyon. The two leaders of this expedition are David Brower
and Floyd Dominy, who are considered to be two of the biggest rivals and
influential people in conservation history. David Brower was the former Executive
Director of the Sierra Club. Brower was a huge conversationalist and was very
passionate about protecting natural landscapes from human destruction. Floyd
Dominy was the commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation and he believed that
natural resources should be used not just preserved for aesthetic reasons. As they
travel down the Colorado River, Brower and Dominy debate fiercely over
conservation and the use of natural resources.... Show more content on

As a county agent, he constructed a pond with out any approval or help from the
state, just to help farmers and cattle get water. He is passionate about developing

conservationist than you are, by far. I do things. I make things available to man.
Unregulated, the Colorado River wouldn t be worth a good God damn to anybody
(McPhee, 2000 p. 240). Dominy is very passionate about his work building the
dams because in his eyes dams are far more beneficial to humanity that
untrammeled nature. His statement reveals his greatest weakness, which is his
arrogance. He claims to be a better conservationist than Brower, however a
conservationist would be able to see that the river is valuable as is without
damming it. He even contradicts himself later when he says, a conservationist is
one who is content to stand still forever. During their raft trip Dominy demonstrates
several times that he is very cocky even when they were on one of roughest parts of
the river everyone had both hands on the safety rope except for him (McPhee, 2000
p.181) he was always showing off and trying to upstage

  • 1. First They Killed My Father Essay Crafting an essay on the topic "First They Killed My Father" can be a challenging task due to the sensitive and emotional nature of the subject matter. This topic delves into the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, exploring the harrowing experiences of survivors, particularly as narrated in Loung Ung's memoir. Writing about such a traumatic historical event requires a delicate balance between presenting the facts, conveying the human experience, and maintaining a respectful tone. One of the challenges is capturing the essence of the narrative while avoiding sensationalism or trivialization of the atrocities. It demands thorough research to provide a nuanced understanding of the historical context, the impact on individuals and communities, and the broader implications of such events. Engaging with the memoir and secondary sources is essential to comprehend the complexities and nuances of the subject matter. Moreover, addressing the emotional aspect of the narrative requires a writer to approach the topic with empathy and sensitivity. Balancing the emotional weight of the content with an analytical and critical perspective is crucial. This may involve discussing themes such as resilience, survival, and the impact of trauma on individuals and societies. Organizing the essay effectively is another challenge. A well-structured essay should present a clear thesis statement, provide supporting evidence, and offer thoughtful analysis. • 3. Essay on Red Hot Chili Peppers Red Hot Chili Peppers A passion for foods from the American Southwest is sweeping through the country. The main component and most popular item of this fad is the chili pepper, an item of tremendous variability and a staple of many people in Central America. In this country, chili peppers were once only found in specialized ethnic stores, but now it is just as likely to be found at the neighborhood Kroger. For most people, however, their knowledge stops here. Through this paper I hope to educate the reader on some other aspects of this intriguing vegetable, such as its history, chemistry, and uses. There is some confusion over what a chili pepper is. To many it is only the hot varieties of pepper, such as the jalapeno or the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dr. Chanca described chili peppers as the native s principle food and compared them to the turnip (Andrews 1984). The seeds of the chili pepper were brought back to Spain, where it was grown in monastery gardens. Portuguese traders then spread the chili peppers to many far flung locations, such as India, Indonesia, and Persia (Andrews 1984). Chile peppers became popular due to their great variability in size, shape, and color. Unfortunately, this long proved to be a problem for the taxonomists, who frequently had trouble telling the difference between a different variety and a different species. It wasn t until the 1950 s that it was decided that there were five main species of chili peppers, and twenty wild ones (Proulx 1985). The five main species are: Capsicum annum, Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum baccatum, and Capsicum pubescens. However, it is considered impossible to develop a system of classification that would cover all of the chili peppers, due to the great variation among the members of the same species, especially in places such as Mexico (Smith, Villalon, and Villa 1987). Man s interest in chili peppers has resulted in new varieties, such as the TAM Jalapeno, Hidalgo Serrano, and Numex Big Jim, which have a milder flavor or are more resistant to disease. In order to make chili peppers more palatable to the public, chili pepper breeders are breeding varieties that are
  • 4. Sexuality Is A Social Identity That Goes Beyond The... Sexuality is a social identity that goes beyond the objectivity of the title and into the subjective scope of the personal lives of individuals, which in turn fabricate the social constructivism of a nation. Classism, heterosexism, and cisgenderism are further reinforced within the institutionalization of heteronormativity, being the promotion of the genderbinary and heterosexuality as the only valid form of gender expression and sexual orientation. The normalization of this system is not enforced as inconspicuously as one would believe, with both Western and Eastern countries visibly dictating social norms in regards to sexuality, by deeming certain sexual practices as socially acceptable through the sanction of microaggressions and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These American words which are typically used to further define and label individuals who do and do not fall within the classifications of heteronormativity are used as the result of there being no cultural explanation and validation for lesbian Thai women. The omittance of a translation for the term lesbian in the Thai language further perpetuates the validation of heteronormativity as the only acceptable form of relationships. The term men being used interchangeably with lesbian demonstrates how in the Thai culture it is assumed and widely agreed that only men would be sexually attracted to women (Sinnott, 2). For Asian women, their sexuality has not only impacted their identity, that identity in itself has created a power structure within each of these countries that has grown to include, but not outwardly accept the sexual practices of marginalized groups of women. In Thailand specifically, it is made known that homosexual behavior does not necessarily lead to an identity, nor does it necessarily constitute a distinct transgression of sexual or gender norms , yet the secularization of queer women leads to class divides, and sociocultural boundaries with the intention of exclusion (Sinnott, 3). Despite a vast array of feeble terms to correctly identify masculine lesbians, feminine lesbians, normal (in regard to Thai culture) women,

The Importance of Personal Responsibility The Importance of Personal Responsibility GEN/200 As an adult you are responsible for every action that you take, but before that action are a series of thoughts that lead you to taking that action. Your personal responsibility starts at a young age, you are either taught personal responsibility as you grow into an adult by being held accountable of your own actions or the responsibility is taken from you. Depending on how you were brought up your transition into becoming an adult can either be an easy one or a difficult one where everyone is to blame but yourself. • 7. Dan Mcadams How I learn through journal articles is definitely different than from a novel or a series of essays. To understand what the article is trying to explain, I have to read them a couple times thoroughly. The strategy I find to be the most beneficial is I will first read the abstract (if there is one), read the introduction, browse through the headings and finally read the conclusion so that when I go back and read the whole article I will have a guide and a general idea about what the article is about /arguing. I think this is really important as academic articles can be extremely dense and you can get trapped in the language and you end up reading a paragraph and take nothing away from it. It you read with a purpose, or with a guide it is easier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By connecting the ideas from the articles and applying them with Things Fall Apart which I believe is always helpful when discussing theory is to apply it to a modern or relevant sense. It makes it much easier to comprehend somewhat complex theoretical ideas on what identity is by seeing it played out in a novel we had just previously examined. This links to what I said before with connecting concepts to my own personal experiences or previous understandings for a more holistic understanding. Although there is the argument that a good researcher is able to separate oneself from their work and simply display the facts; however, I do not think that this is what the course requires from students. I think that because identity is such an intricate part of your daily lives it would be near impossible to separate oneself from the research (or these two articles), well at least for myself. To improve my learning on the theories of identity and reading scholarly journal articles in general I think it is important to do more research. To be able to put the articles you read within the greater context of what has already been written, was this ground breaking work, or was it expanding on concepts that had already been studied? I think that it is important to know where the article you are reading stands in conjunction to the
  • 8. How Much Power Should the American Government Yield A dispute widespread amongst the citizens of the United States of America is on government, and more specifically on how much power the government should yield. The philosophical question I will be posing in this article is what should the government have the power to do . All the way to the left, we have liberals who believe in a big governmentand a government that is involved with supporting the people and curbing social inequalities and social hierarchywhile supporting social equality. On the other side of the spectrum we have right wing conservatives who prefer a government that is small and call for reduced social spending, less regulation. In addition, they accept social hierarchy and social inequalityciting that social hierarchy and social inequality are inevitable. With this essay, I want to focus on if the government has the power to invade your privacy. Currently reactions has been wild ever since former NSA analyst Edward Snowden leaked the massive PRISM internet surveillance program used by the NSA to collect data on citizens of the U.S. The philosophical question what should the government have the power to do correlates with the NSA because the NSA is an institution of the government, and should the government have the power to spy on its citizens without their knowledge and without a warrant for the sake of national security. Foucault goes through the way governments have attempted to control populations throughout history, and how power has exercised

Self is the fundamental being that separates individuals due to the uniqueness of their minds and the experiences that influence the distinctiveness of identity. Martha Stout s background in psychology initializes a deeper understanding of selfthrough the analysis of stories told by her patients who suffer from dissociation in her writing called When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday . Stout and Bell capitalize the importance of narration in their writings to play part in the identities of characters Jayanthi and Seth. Jayanthi, an Indian woman that manipulates her sexuality to disprove societal and cultural labels which is categorized by Bell as the Sexual Woman, takes narration into account when she recollects her history to her friends and family. The adrenaline and eccentricity of the stories give her purpose that is displayed through the context of her stories. She also uses narration to interpret her desire for relationship but struggles to find one. Bell explains after bad girl Jayanthi tells her sexual experience and relational denials, She was aware now that she had been feeling insecure at the time, and that she had been seeking out attention and affection... At the time she had longed for a sexual history, for stories that would make her real and alive (33). • 10. Truth In Cormac Mccarthy s The Road Denying what you feel will not make it go away. It ensures that it never gets resolved, (Denial). Taking action on difficult situations allows individuals to combat reality and avoid unfavorable circumstances. However, many people think that avoiding the truth means avoiding the situation, equivalating that the circumstances are not real. This leads to other, more costly problems. Cormac McCarthy s The Road is set in a post apocalyptic world where a father and son are journeying in hopes to escape the destruction around them. Similar to McCarthy s book, Toni Morrisoncenters on a young African American girl, Pecola, in The Bluest Eye, who hopes to escape the ill perceptions of others in her struggle to fit beauty perceptions within her society.... Passing by Nella Larsen is a story told in the perspective of Irene Redfield, a fair skinned African American woman, who worries that her husband s restlessness in their marriage is due to a possible affair with her friend Clare. As Irene gets ready for an event she thinks to herself: With this self assurance that she had no real knowledge, she redoubled her efforts to drive out of her mind the distressing thought of faiths broken and trusts betrayed which every mental vision of Clare, of Brian, brought with them. She could not, she would not, go again through the tearing agony that lay just behind her, (Larsen, ch. 3.2). Having no real knowledge if her husband s affair is true helps her to put the thought in the back of her mind, however the reader finds that the affair is not real. This imagination of Brian and Clare shows that Irene is mentally unstable, she does not like what she imagines when she thinks of Clare, of Brian, the two together, yet it is better to handle then the agony she faces at the thought of Brian s sexuality. The matter of his sexuality is something she refuses to think about which is why she forms the theory of his infidelity to protect herself from the truth, yet it only drives her deeper into insanity. However, Irene is not the only one who is brought to insanity by the denial she creates. Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, tells of a young girl, Pecola who is African American

People make first impressions based on one s physical beauty, although it is their inner beauty that makes them distinct. Inner and outer beauty defines people in how it is achieved, how society and culture view it, and the risks related to beauty. Outer beauty is the physical beauty, while inner beauty is who you are. Outer beauty is your complexion, appearance, physical features, and clothing. Outer beauty is inherited from your parents and the individual does not get to pick what they will look like. Frost At Midnight Analysis In a conversation poem titled Frost at Midnight, romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge creates a persona of himself who spends the duration of the poem having a one sided conversation with his newly born baby. The narrator laments his own childhood, but finds solace in knowing that his baby has potential for a better life than he, since the baby will have a nature centered upbringing. The narrator contrasts constricted and expansive imagery, enumerated and enjambed sentences, and alienated and familiar diction to underline the differences between his own childhood education, which was spent studying books, and the childhood education he hopes his baby will have. The narrator suggests that nature will offer his baby a childhood education superior to his own because nature will teach the baby to be one with the world, allowing him to feel peace and serenity no matter the circumstances. In this poem, the narrator opens up with a serene scene of a winter night or so it seems. Although the narrator describes an externally cozy, peaceful scene, he unveils a discordant heart, as suggested by the restless tone he uses. During this silent night, the narrator watches a piece of soot flicker over the fire: Only that film, which fluttered on the grate, / Still flutters there, the sole unquiet thing. • 38. Max Weber Sociology Of Religion Along with Durkheim and Marx, Weber was one of the most influential thinkers in the foundation of the field of sociology, Weber namely in establishing the subject of the sociology of religion. Weber s mother was a devout Calvinist, while his father was involved in politics and intellectual pursuits. In addition to his vast education in many fields, Weber was also a jurist, and a teacher at the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg. Max Weberfavoured a hermeneutical approach to studying religion (McCutcheon 2007, p.188) in a method known as Verstehen. This refers to wishing to understand the deeper significance of something, in this case religion, by studying it from the perspective and experience of another, and the meaning they then attach to it. Since religious beliefs affect people s behaviour, Weber believed that religions could have profound effects on societies and their development (Connolly 1999, p.199). While Weber, like Marx, saw religion as emerging from suffering, he had a more positive attitude towards it, seeing it as having benefits. He saw religion as being something which gave humans meaning in life and a way to respond to suffering (Herling 2015, p.74). An example the Christian doctrine of original sin can serve as an explanation for evil in the world, thereby offering a solution for people to reconcile and cope with their suffering in the world and their lives (Weber 1965, p.139). Unlike Marx, he did not see it as being an inherently negative or

Lecturing, demonstrating and quizzing, although not experimentally manipulated, was implemented, and it was found that following these interspersed sessions that bouts of distraction during lectures was reduced. According to Bunce et al., Self reports upon distraction measured attentiveness to lecture content. Although results of this study are informative, as mentioned above, self reports are limited without the combining with other techniques. To assess mindwandering and the effects of active learning interventions, the frequency and timing of these would need to be manipulated specifically. This type of study, however, is particularly relevant to improving understanding the relationship between mind wandering and higher education. In contrast, this extremely comprehensive study is broad ranging in its outcomes. In a controlled investigation, the authors, Mrazek et al, (2013), used a mixed factorial pretest posttest design. Her poetry remains a mystery to so many readers and her lack of biographical information makes her writing even more intriguing. Dickinson spent most of her life away from society, therefore, very few people knew how she viewed the aspects of life, let alone knew what her writing meant. Her interpretations of concepts such as religion, nature, and death are often seen as contradicting and pinning one specific thesis on her views is difficult because she viewed many things with complexity. Among her poems, readers see a diversity in her perspectives. For example, she might write one poem about the beauties of nature and continue to write another poem about the dangers or ... The narrator is ready for death and accepting it; she writes I willed my keepsakes Signed away/ What portion of me be/ Assignable and the audience sees her willingness to go. However, There interposed a Fly and this fly s interruption created a change in tone. The narrator felt the windows fail and this could be seen as a metaphor for losing her spot in heaven. This poem makes death seem almost scary and one could assume that Dickinson views death this way. Contrarily, in I like a look of Agony she portrays death as a serene, authentic concept. The narrator says there is no faking death and that s what they most appreciate of death. Dickinson creates a relaxing tone associated with death and upon reading this certain poem, a reader may assume she views death as calm and genuine. Emily Dickinson also wrote plenty about nature, seeing as she was constantly around it rather than actual humans. Her views of nature vary from optimistic and intoxicating to frightening and threatening. In her poem There s a certain Slant of light , she carries a holy and amazed mood throughout it. Using words like Heavenly and Cathedral support the holiness in the text. The narrator is amazed at the

Secondly, systems problems are related to the bigger picture issues, i.e. integrating performance systems into the original systems (Gianakis, 2002), a lack of strategic view which encourages short term thinking (Neely et al., 1995), the ambiguity of performance objectives (Pollanen, 2005), sub optimisation (Neely et al., 1995; Pollitt, 2000; Gianakis, 2002; Adcroft and Willis, 2005) and the cost of performance management (Train and Williams, 2000; Holzer and Yang, 2004; Pollanen, 2005). The third kind of problem are the significant people issues and their involvement inside the PM system among inter multiple stakeholders (Black et al., 2001; Wang and Berman, 2001; Gianakis, 2002; McAdam et al., 2005). These issues can be caused by a

Unlike any other planet, the Earth has vast oceans with millions of small islands in them, green vegetation, huge landmasses, different topographies, like the mountains, ice caps and deserts, all of which present an amazing variety of color and texture. be the extremely cold Antarctica, where hardy microscopic beings thrive in ponds, tiny wingless insects live in patches of moss and lichen, and plants grow and flower yearly or the extremely warm desert of Sahara plants such as date palms and acacia put down long roots to reach life sustaining water or often the seeds of flowering plants sprout quickly after a rain and complete their growing cycle and producing seeds in a matter of days, before the soil dries out, one can find some form of life other in almost every ecological niche on earth. From the outer layers of the atmosphere to the deep sea beds at the bottom of the oceans and from the coldest poles to the warmest equator, life thrives here. Till date, no convincingly true evidence of life has been found on any planet. [1] While the Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years and our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of humans is claimed to have evolved only about 200,000 years ago. The present civilization it is only about six thousand years old, and the industrialization era started in full

The data were quantitative data and was represented in a tabular form. The data collected has disproved the original hypothesis as it was discovered that favouritism, nepotism and cronyism all have a positive effect on job satisfaction, in the Pakistan. The result may be due to certain limitation that limited the effectiveness of the research. But there are other ways of changing players in Football Fantasy and here they are. Activating Bench Players To Active Status One of the most overlooked ways of changing players in an existing lineup is by simply changing the status of a certain player from bench to active or vice versa. You can access this function online by simply going to your team s webpage. There you will find a menu that permits you to change the status of each of the players on your roster. • 53. David Brower And Dominy In John Mcphee s The River The River by John McPhee tells the story of a raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The two leaders of this expedition are David Brower and Floyd Dominy, who are considered to be two of the biggest rivals and influential people in conservation history. David Brower was the former Executive Director of the Sierra Club. Brower was a huge conversationalist and was very passionate about protecting natural landscapes from human destruction. Floyd Dominy was the commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation and he believed that natural resources should be used not just preserved for aesthetic reasons. As they travel down the Colorado River, Brower and Dominy debate fiercely over conservation and the use of natural resources.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a county agent, he constructed a pond with out any approval or help from the state, just to help farmers and cattle get water. He is passionate about developing wilderness for the accessibility and needs of people, which in his eyes makes him a pretty great guy. On their river expedition, Dominy says to Brower I m a greater conservationist than you are, by far. I do things. I make things available to man. Unregulated, the Colorado River wouldn t be worth a good God damn to anybody (McPhee, 2000 p. 240). Dominy is very passionate about his work building the dams because in his eyes dams are far more beneficial to humanity that untrammeled nature. His statement reveals his greatest weakness, which is his arrogance. He claims to be a better conservationist than Brower, however a conservationist would be able to see that the river is valuable as is without damming it. He even contradicts himself later when he says, a conservationist is one who is content to stand still forever. During their raft trip Dominy demonstrates several times that he is very cocky even when they were on one of roughest parts of the river everyone had both hands on the safety rope except for him (McPhee, 2000 p.181) he was always showing off and trying to upstage
