The Novel The Handmaid Tale
Imagine knowing that a group of people are attempting to take full control of society and the way to
live life, but there is nothing that can be done to stop them from accomplishing it. That s exactly what
has been occurring to societies around the world for centuries: Hitler in Germany, Stalin in Russia,
and Idi Amin in Uganda, but still continues due to a leader or Regime s clever techniques to gradually
attain power in society without the acknowledgement of citizens. Similarly, in the dystopian novel The
Handmaids Tale, a staged terrorist attack kills the President, which leads to the government being
taken over by the Republic of Gilead, who ultimately transforms the state of Gilead into a women s
nightmare. The women in the novel are forced to be sex slaves in society, in order to produce babies
for the infertile men in the state of Gilead, where fertility rates are significantly low. However, the
Republic of Gilead forces citizens to follow their theocratic ideology through misleading the entire
population with their clever techniques to accomplish their goal of having full power and eventually
form a totalitarian society. Thus, in The Handmaids Tale, by Margaret Atwood, misinterpreted
references to the bible s scriptures and manipulative techniques are used by the Regime of Gilead to
form a totalitarian society. The Republic of Gilead uses misinterpreted references from the bible, in
order to support their misleading ideology and manipulate citizens to

Compare And Contrast Rome And Roman Republic
Roman Republic or Roman Empire
Arthur Erickson said that, Ancient Rome was as confident of the immutability of its world and the
continual expansion and improvement of the human lot as we are today . In Rome got two kinds of
government, and there were Roman Empire and Roman Republic. Both of them had different
structures to development on many aspects in Rome such as laws, equality and rights of life s Roman

Another contributing factor is the decision to stop manufacturing digital cameras and expand the

sell their printer and with LifePics to develop photo merchandising services (2012). Perhaps most
impactful partnership Eastman Kodak has formed in recent years is with NovaCopy in 2012. This
joint venture will enable businesses to upload documents to Microsoft Office365, a cloud based
collaboration and productivity platform (Eastman Kodak SWOT Analysis, 2012).
Social Responsibility
The Eastman Kodak Company has a long history of ethics and social responsibility. George Eastman,
the company s founder, gave away much of his fortune during his lifetime with a particular focus on
higher education including historically Black colleges (Jacques, 2010). He believed that giving to the

Go Back To California Essay
According to this week s lecture, this topic covered the significance of California, why is it a diverse
state, and how does it attract many people from outside of California. Throughout this main idea,
California is a number one largest history in the United State and this what brings people from others
including outside of the country to explore California. California has been important through the huge
change in this state that everyone had notice way back from the past and many great places to visit.

Plus California has memorable places where we can visit, take pictures, and experience. Since I am a
nature loving person, I enjoyed going to places that are natural and far more like Yosemite National
Park. And I realizes there are also changes in that area. This is why I m currently majoring in
Evolutionary Biology and Ecology so I can earn my chance to visit new places where I wished to go
in the future as I have a great career in life and share it with my family and friends. Also, I m enjoying
taking photos based on nature everywhere I go alone, with friends and family. There was one time was
made a bike trip from UC Merced Campus to the Universal Service Recycling Merced all alone, it
was a twenty miles trip. I literally rode straight on Lake and this is the place where I admired, so I
took most my snapshots. So far I have taken photos of the Snowy Sierra Mountain, a campus that was
a distance, and a snapshot of beautiful farmland area. And then when I went back to campus, I show to
most of my friends and they are really interested and know how I m really into nature and traveling. I
found that was one of my memorable time that I did when I actually came to Merced. I felt Merced is
a lot different than when I used to live before which is the Bay Area. Therefore California obtains its

The Enlightenment And The Scientific Revolution
Inspired by the Renaissance, Humanism and Individualism, the Scientific Revolution, John Locke,
and the Age of Discovery, and Religious Wars, the Enlightenment in Europe sparked a movement of
change and progress. During the Enlightenment, humans were focused on improving their lives and
letting go of or expanding on ancient texts that had set the previous standards. The Scientific
Revolution was one event that provided a sturdy foundation to the Enlightenment by having solid
evidence of things in the world being contrary to what everyone had thought for years. The proofs
from the Revolution were a strong basis for progress in the Enlightenment. During the Enlightenment,
the concept of unalienable rights was a hot topic, Even if each man ... Show more content on

The cultural values of nature, reason, and progress were the cultural values that shaped and created the
Enlightenment. Without those values, there would have been no Enlightenment. The main values of
the Enlightenment, nature, reason, and progress, can be seen slightly in some events predating the
Enlightenment. The Scientific Revolution was the great cornerstone to build further ideas upon.
People like Galileo and Newton carved out the groundwork for the Enlightenment. Galileo began
disproving the church s theories about the universe and Newtonian developed his idea of a Newtonian
universe, making the church extremely angry. Galileo was even called to trial for heresy against the
church in 1633, ... have rendered yourself in the judgment of this Holy Office vehemently suspected
of heresy, namely, of having believed and held the doctrine which is false and contrary to the sacred
and divine Scriptures that the Sun is the center of the world and does not move from east to west...
(Roman Catholic Church 28). Newton also contributed to the Enlightenment with his laws. His laws
were used to apply to every single aspect of life during the Enlightenment, making him the new
Aristotle to an extent. The Political aspect of the Enlightenment was the shift to unalienable rights and
the almost absolute shift away from the church. John Locke had championed the idea of life, liberty,

Power of Suppliers GMCR s warns of the potential impact of the price of coffee on the gross profit
margin. To combat this, GMCR had made a number of purchase commitments to ensure an adequate
supply of coffee (GMCR Annual Report, 2010). The market price for coffee is impacted by numerous
factors including weather, economy, and competition. It is vital that GMCR continue to take proactive
measures to secure against unforeseen spikes in coffee prices. The price of coffee does not only impact
GMCR s ability produce coffee for the Keurig brewer under its namesake but impacts their partner
suppliers as well. GMCR purchases coffee from brokers, farms, estates, and cooperative groups and
essentially diversifies its coffee supply, reducing some supply risk (GMCR Annual Report, 2010).
Suppliers such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are marquee names in the coffee business. The brands
are powerful and offer significant value to the Keurig product line. GMCR must continue to build
similar relationships and retain them for the long term. These strong brand names not only offer a new
target customer they also reaffirm Keurig positioning as premium product. The bargaining power of
these suppliers will vary based on size and brand. GMCR must determine its power when negotiating
future deals with such suppliers, in cases like Starbucks, GMCR should be willing to give more
(accept lower royalty) to continue building the brand.

In order to deliver a packet, a sender may have to wait for a certain period of time [4] until its receiver
becomes active. Sleep latency degrades the performance (e.g., delay and energy consumption) of
various kinds of data forwarding designs in low duty cycle networks. There are two features that make
flooding in low duty cycle networks challenging. First, a packet is unlikely to be received by multiple
nodes simultaneously as in always awake networks. To broadcast a packet, a sender has to transmit the
same packet multiple times if its receivers do not wake up at the same time. Thus flooding in such
networks is realized essentially by multiple unicasts. Second, unlike wired networks, wireless
communication is notoriously unreliable [4]. A transmission is repeated if the previous transmissions
are not successful due to wireless loss. The combination of low duty cycle operation and unreliable
links necessitates the design of a different flooding mechanism than those found in wired networks
and always awake wireless networks. These combined have a knock on effects on reliability and cost
[4]. One straightforward solution could be building a routing tree for flooding. Yet this type of
solutions have been shown [7] to be fragile, because the failure of a parent node prevents

A Young American s Discovery of the Silent Majority Essay...
A Young American s Discovery of the Silent Majority
History panders to the glorious and dramatic while often there is a story untold. Perhaps it is less
exciting, but no less crucial in understanding history as a whole. Thus is the story of the silent
majority. On November 3rd 1969, one year after his victory in the United States Presidential race,
President Nixon issued an address to the American public in which he coined the term silent majority.
President Nixon s address began by describing the situation he inherited when taking office. Nixon
described the situation as such: The war had been going on for four years. One thousand Americans
had been killed in action. The training program for the South Vietnamese was ... Show more content

For almost 200 years, the policy of this nation has been made under our Constitution by those leaders
in the Congress and the White House elected by all of the people. If a vocal minority, however fervent
its cause, prevails over reason and the will of the majority, this nation has no future as a free society
(Episode).
President Nixon proceeded to address the concerns of the vocal minority and then to address what he
termed the silent majority. From reading the address in its entirety one gets an overall tone of an
issuance of comfort, rather than just an aim to inform. President Nixon s comforting speeches did little
to silence the vocal minority however as they continued to voice concerns just after his second
inauguration in 1972. A student writing for the Albany Student Press issued this concern in January of
1972; In 1968, the Republican candidate Richard Nixon promised to end the war in Southeast Asia; in
1972, the President remains adamant against setting any date for total withdrawal of American
forces...(Oringher). The author continued on a rant exclaiming the failed promises of the Nixon
administration and claiming the President had done nothing to ameliorate unemployment and nothing
to help women, blacks, or native Americans.
Such was the typical attitude of a student claiming vocal minority status. The article pays no mind to
outside forces that might affect unemployment and makes no attempt to offer exactly

Comparing The Raven And Incident In A Rose Garden
Death is something that at some point will come to each of us and has been explored in many forms of
literature. The Raven and Incident in a Rose Garden are two poems that explore common beliefs and
misconceptions about death. Though both poems differ in setting, tone, and mood there are surprising
similarities in the literary tools they use and in the messages they attempt to convey. The setting and
mood establish the tone and feel of a poem. In The Raven we are launched into a bleak and dreary
winters night where a depressed narrator pines for his dead girlfriend. In Incident in a Rose Garden we
are cast into a garden on a bright summers day where the frightened gardener seeks to flee death to be
with his living family. It is hard to come up with two more different settings. Consider the bleak and
dreary winter night versus the walk in the sunny summer flower garden. There are also two
completely different moods, one glum and morose and the other excited and frantic. Symbolism is a
literary tool that is commonly used to convey ideas. Both poems use symbolism throughout their text.

In the garden, Death explains how he became a friend to the father of the estate owner. Most people
fear the uncertainty and unknown things about death. As the poem progresses we can see a change
from fear to understanding that brings about a peace with death. In The Raven there is a scene where
the raven is perched on the bust of Pallas, which represents wisdom. My thought of this is to recall just
what it is that birds do when they are perched on statues. This imagery makes me think that sometimes
we need to disregard conventional wisdom and seek our own understanding. Both poems in their own
ways are urging us to open our minds and to find ways to expand our

Comparing Aristotle s 8
Now the question is what values should one have to rule, what makes them qualified compared to
others. Plato outlines the different aspects of government and why he believes an aristocracy would be
better form of government. In book 8 Socrates starts to wrap up his depiction of a just city. He starts to
break down the four unjust constitutions of the city and man. Timocracy, which is represented by the
honor driven man who resembles and rules that sort of government. There is an oligarchy, ruled by a
man driven by his necessary appetites. Democracy, in which the man is controlled by unnecessary
appetites. And finally there is tyranny, which the man is driven by unlawful appetites. Socrates

In book 9 Plato discusses the aspects of the tyrannical man. He mentions that the tyrants are someone
who is consumed by lawless desires. One question I have is the tyrannical man destined to be a tyrant
because he has a noble democratic father? These desires lead men towards ghastly, shameless,
criminal actions that are particularly bad for someone in an position of power. Socrates offers an
example of a lawless desire is the desire to sleep with one s mother, something that is horrible to do in
any society. It is made clear that all of us have lawless desires, which is indubitably true. The proof is
that these desires occasionally come out at night, in our dreams, when the rational part of us is not on
guard. But only the tyrannical man allows these desires to emerge in life while he is awake during the
day. Plato s description continues, the tyrannical man is the son of the democratic man. His father is
not lawless, but he does indulge unnecessary desires. Just like the father, the son is exposed to drones,
men with lawless desires. However the father had his own oligarchic father s thriftiness to pull him
toward the middle road of democracy. This is crucial for the balance one must have to be a ruler in
society. Now this son brought up on the democratic ethos, moves further toward lawlessness. The
father and entire household try to win him back, but the ultimate triumph of the lawless is inevitable.

For my creative project, I intend to tell a story of Chicano s and a part of their culture that is much

The Injustices found in Banana Cultivation on People and the Environment
On average, a human being consumes about 3 meals a day. While many people eat whatever they
please, there are many individuals who choose to live and maintain a healthy life style. While almost
any type of food is available in our stores and markets here in the U.S., this does not mean much of
produce we consume is actually grown here. Especially when it comes to the fruits and vegetables we
consume every day, many of them are grown elsewhere. While we import much of our fresh produce,
many people fail to see the complications these countries and farmers go through on a daily basis to
get us these crops we need. A fruit like bananas for instance has more of a history than many people
could even imagine. I m here to discuss the history of this naturally consumed fruit as well as speak
about the countless labor and environmental issues that have taken place.
Without probably realizing it, bananas are the most consumed fruits of the United States. India stands
as the world s largest producer of fresh bananas, but when it comes to exporting, the five leading
banana exporting countries in 2009 were Ecuador, Colombia, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and
Guatemala. In 2012, the U.S. imported 9,589 million pounds of bananas, more than 95 percent of
them grown in five tropical Latin American nations (Paul). Many of these plantations are built on land

The Black Man s Existence Essay
Science tells us that everything that we as humans do comes from a basic need to survive, and this
tells us that the desire to live, or the fear of death, is one of the most primal things that every person
feels. In America, this primal desire to survive is what governs African American men in their daily
life as a result of the constant fear that their bodies will be taken from them in an act of violence. In
Between the World and Me, Ta Nehsi Coates writes about the state of black bodies in America,
focusing on the racial violence and harassment that black men face on a daily basis, in the form of a
letter to his son. The black man s existence in America is established by this ever present fear of death
due to the fact that their bodies and their general existence is so policed through social subjugation and
institutionalized violence. Moreover, Coates explains that the white identity is constructed in
comparison to black existence, and in order to keep white identity as supreme, America allows for the
continuous physical attack and constant disenfranchisement of African Americans. Evidence from the
text will show that Coates s combines personal experience with beautifully rhythmic prose in order to
make it clear to the reader the ways in which the African American existence is controlled and dictated
in America. It also clarifies how this is done through the ever present threat of violence, and that the
reason this policing takes place is to solidify whiteness as the

Analysis Of Development Of Solar Architecture Essay
Analysis of development of solar architecture in China: How has modern architecture been redefined
by this and Could it be the key factor in build a non renewable energy free generation?
Introduction
In the past century, our society had changed rapidly due to varieties of newly found awareness such as
the concept of global warming and shortage of our finite power supply. These awarenesses caused us
to adapt and develop new techniques in order to survive. One of the many things that had been
changed in our society were the architectures especially in the more developed countries such as
England ,America and China. As such, the concept of sustainability had entered into the consciousness
of architects and became an essential concern in the discourse of architecture (1). With sustainability
as priority in mind, architectural designs now focuses on how to increase the reduction of non
renewable energy usage by using the energy exacted from nature itself.
For this dissertation, the main objective is to fully analyse how the idea of using green energy as an
alternate source of energy had effect the architecture in China. Amongst the countless type of
sustainable architecture, I have chosen to analyse the Solar Architecture in China as the main focus for
this dissertation. In China, The concept of using solar energy as a direct power source had only been

Rise Of Abortion In The United States
Every day the number of abortion cases increases. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy.
Abortions have become a trend among the youth of the 20th century. Although an abortion in the
United States is legal it can regulate and limited in individual states. Abortion is wrong and cruel there
are many positive options to make before taking that plan of action.
There have been an increasing number of abortion cases throughout the United States. Between 2000
and 2008 the abortion rate has increased 18 percent among poor women. Nearly 70 percent of
abortions are for women who are making 11,000 a year or less, and are hovering right over the poverty
line. Lower income single women tend to get pregnant more than middle class single women. The
reason is that lower income single women have less self esteem about their self. The reason for some
women to have abortion is the responsibilities of parenthood and family life. Non Hispanic white
women account for 36 percent of abortions, non Hispanic black women for 30 percent Hispanic

The Role Of Objective Structured Clinical Examination
Introduction Assessment plays important role in medical education and training of doctors.
Assessment methods have evolved over the last decade from written tests towards a holistic system of
evaluation (Howley, 2004). New methods of assessment tools have emerged with emphasis based on
real world testing. Medical education and assessment has shifted towards competency based training
(PMETB, 2008). OSCE has been widely used as an assessment tool worldwide in both undergraduate
and postgraduate exams including medicine and allied health specialities (Patricio M, 2013). In this
assignment I have reviewed the role of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as an
assessment tool in the MRCS exam as an MRCS examiner in relation to the literature. Background
Millers pyramid of educational objectives (Miller 1990) and Bloom s cognitive taxonomy (Bloom,
1956) formed the pillar of medical education in the 1990 s. Miller (1990) introduced his pyramid of
educational objectives consisting of four levels: Lowest level of pyramid is knowledge (Knows),
ascending up is competence (knows how), performance (shows how), action (does) . Knows
represents the basic facts, knows how to apply knowledge, shows how demonstration of skills and
does competent real life practice. The four level of the pyramid reflects the level of knowledge and
competence on which all the assessment methods of today are based on thus constituting the basement
framework of education and assessment. The

Once this process is finished it is then up to the store manager to maintain general control. They must

Causes Of Hypertensive Diplegia
Andrew Johns Issues and Concerns
Hypertensive Diplegia, is a neurological condition which primarily affects my fine motor control and
in particular my ability to walk. Hypertensive Diplegia is part of the cerebral palsy family, and
depending on which medical records you read, that s what I suffer from. This condition can manifest
in many different ways and is often mistakenly referred to as Spastic Cerebral Palsy which; again is
often used as a term to describe HD. Whilst part of the Cerebral Palsy family, Hypertensive Diplegia
is generally much less severe, and whilst affecting the same areas of the brain, the causes are different.

Comparing Bradstreet s Sinners In To My Dear And Loving...
Jonathan Edwards hellfire and brimstone in his Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God has several
comparisons and contrasts with Anne Bradstreet s poems, Upon the Burning of Our House and To My
Dear and Loving Husband. One of the comparisons would be with the concept of Eternal Life. Both
writers were Puritans, and accepted the concept of life after death. Bradstreet says in To my Dear and
Loving Husband that she hopes the heavens reward thee manifold, I pray...Then when we live no
more, we may live ever. Saying we may live ever gives the reader the thought of life after death, and
she is saying that she wants to live eternally with her husband. Edwards had the same idea, but in a
darker sense. He insisted upon the fact that

My Love Of Photography
He had been around the globe and back, looking at thousands of photographs, year after year, day after
day, second after second, trying to fill this hole he had inside of him. It had been eight years since he
lost his mother after a long and hard battle, but it had felt like a century since she was with him. Her
love of photography carried on through him, and her work would never be forgotten. Her unique style
and perspective was like no other, and throughout his career as a buyer of the most beautiful and most
famous photos, he had never seen one quite like hers. He strode down 42nd and 8th avenue in his
suede black suit, white tie, leather loafers, and he had his briefcase in hand. The loud sounds and

He had walked this way many times and had never noticed this tiny old gallery. He then slowly
opened the door. The wooden floors creaked as he walked, the painting on the wall was chipping, and
one could hear a pin drop for the room was entirely empty except for the quite young employee at the
counter. There were very few photographs hanging from the wall, and he thought to himself that he
would not be purchasing anything that day, until he saw it. As he was about to turn back around and
walk out, something caught his eye. His hand unwrapped from the handle of his briefcase, and it
dropped to the floor making a thumping sound. His eyes were opened wide with the look of complete
and utter shock, and his body went numb. For a moment he felt as though everything in the world had
disappeared and the only thing visible was this photograph. He was in awe of the beauty and the
emotion that this photo portrayed. It can t be. He whispered to himself.
He had remembered that his mother had generated one last collection before her passing. It consisted
of 11 photographs that no other photographer was capable of taking. Her talent and ability to convey
such inspiration and joy through her pictures was the thing she was most known for. She was so
unbelievably talented that her work was just mesmerizing. Why did she not show me this last photo?

Wilhelm Negligence Case
In this introduction of the case, we see that there was a question on the floor being asked about if
Wilhelm acted negligently by failing to remind Flores of the dangers of working with beehives. I read
this case twice and speculated on if Mr. Curtis Wilhelm acted negligently in failing to warn Flores of
the dangers of functioning with beehives because John Black provided Santos with a protective suit to

Boyce Lab Report
Preliminary Data:
Preliminary work was preformed by Nathan Cox in the Boyce Lab to examine the functional
significance of O GlcNAcylation in the COPII pathway. Perturbation of O GlcNAcylation through
Thiamet G, an OGA inhibitor, was assessed using a well established VSV G eGFP reporter assay
Citations. The trafficking of a temperature sensitive VSV G eGFP mutant that is transported by COPII
from the ER to the Golgi at the permissive temperature can be evaluated by the development of
characteristic juxanuclear punctate fluorescence (Golgi) from diffuse/reticular fluorescence (ER) over
time. Treatment with Thiamet G slowed Golgi accumulation of VSV G eGFP, indicating that OGA
activity is required for normal COPII trafficking (Figure 1).

Capturing O GlcNAc mediated protein protein interactions is challenging due to the low affinity, sub
stoichiometric and transient nature of the modification. Using a synthetic O GlcNAc analog
containing a diazirine photocrosslinking moiety (GlcNDAz), we are able to label native O
GlcNAcylated substrates in live cells and crosslink them to nearby glycosylation mediated binding
partners upon UV treatment 13. In experiments performed by Abhisheck Chhetri, Tim Smith and
Thomas Meister, the Boyce lab showed that endogenous and recombinant Myc 6xHis tagged Sec24C

Analysis Of John Updike s Araby
John Updike s penchant for appropriating great works of literature and giving them contemporary
restatement in his own fiction is abundantly documented as is the fact that, among his favorite sources,
James Joyce looms large.[1]
With special affinity for Dubliners, Updike has, by common acknowledgment, written at least one
short story that strongly resembles the acclaimed Araby, not only in plot and theme, but in incidental
detail. That story, the 1960 You ll Never Know, Dear, How Much I Love You like Araby tells the tale
of a poor, romantically infatuated young boy who, though obstructed by parental slowness, journeys
with innocent urgency, coins in hand, to a seemingly magical carnival only to find there, behind its
facades, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The self delusion in both cases leads quickly to an emotional fall.
At 19, Updike s protagonist, Sammy, is a good bit older than Joyce s at the opposite end of
adolescence, it would seem. While in Joyce s boy we readily believe such confusion between the
gallant and profane, I think we needn t assume that Sammy is likewise unable to distinguish between
the two quite normal impulses. His attraction to the girl in the aisle is certainly far more anatomically
and less ambiguously expressed than that of Joyce s boy to Mangan s sister. But it is Beauty that
confounds the issue. When human aesthetics come into play, when the object of a young man s carnal
desire also gratifies him aesthetically, that is when the confusion arises. in Irish Catholic Dublin of the
1890s,[3] such youthful beauty not surprisingly invokes analogies between Mangan s sister and the
Queen of Heaven (though the swinging of her body and the soft rope of her hair toss[ing] from side to
side [Joyce 30]), which captivate the boy, hint at something less spiritual than Madonna worship). And
while beauty s benchmarks in Sammy s more secular mid century America are more anatomical than
spiritual, Updike does have Sammy call his young femme fatal Queenie, and he does make her the
center of a trinity of sorts, showing her two friends at one point huddl[ing] against her for relief ( A P

Rappaccini s Daughter Analysis
Rappaccini s Daughter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a short story about how beauty is within
and not just physical. When Hawthorne was four years old his father was in an accident and died on
the scene, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings alone. Thus, leading him to have respect for
all women, and it is reflected in the story. For instance, the main character Beatrice is this aesthetic,
sweet, and a naïve woman and Giovanni is just focused more on her beauty rather than anything else.
Moreover, when Giovanni first sees Beatrice in the garden, he describes her as the most beautiful
woman he s ever seen and is just blinded by her beauty. What he doesn t know is that her father,
Doctor Rappaccini, is a scientist who cares more about science more than anything else. The place
where Beatrice and Giovanni spend all their time together is in the garden, which represents loneliness
, and unfortunately one of the main characters will learn that the hard way. When Giovanni meets
Professor Baglioni, a professor of medicine who is Rappaccini s rival he helps him get Beatrice, or at
least that s what Giovanni thinks. However, what Giovanni does not know is that the love of his life
isn t who he thinks she is. Beatrice Rappaccini is the daughter of a scientist who is experimenting with
plants, and they have a beautiful garden in the backyard. She is the most beautiful woman that
Giovanni has ever seen and people around the village agree that she is beautiful, but nobody knows
the real her, they just notice her appearance. She is full of life, full of energy, and her heart is so big
and there isn t a drop of evilness in her body. For an instance, the reptile contorted itself violently, and
then lay motionless in the sunshine. Beatrice observed this remarkable phenomenon, and crossed
herself (Hawthorne 411). When people cross themselves it s because they re at a funeral, something
horrible just happened to one, or someone important to them. Beatrice and Giovanni spend all their
time together in the garden and it symbolizes a place of isolation and beauty because the flowers are
poisonous but beautiful. For example, a shrub catches his eye from the color, which is purple, and its
fragrance draws him

How We Got Over Chapter Summary
How We Got Over is book full of selected speeches vocalized by Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr., a former
President of Jackson State University. The selected speeches cover topics centered around African
Americans, specifically African American education. Most of the speeches, compiled in the book by
Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr. himself, are from his Jackson State University Founders Day speeches. The
speeches are arranged chronologically, and some of the speeches are given discrete introductions to
elucidate the concern, purpose, or problem being addressed (Peoples ix). The book s title is a little
misleading because one underlying theme of the entire book is that the struggles for African
Americans are not over. Even though some of the speeches were voiced as far back as 1950, many of
the author s subject matter and presented perspectives are applicable to the today s society, most
unambiguously the African American community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

by asserting to his fellow graduates that as graduates, they must attack society s issues head on, and be
leaders to the African American community to solve society s social problems (4). That speech, given

The Book of Margery Kempe provides insight to the highly intense version of medieval paths of
approaching Christ. Another medieval religious text, The Cloud of Unknowing, provides a record of
approaching the same Christ. I will explore the consistencies and inconsistencies of both ways to

so on the basis of both texts.

Pursuing such spiritual fulfillment is a responsibility not to be taken lightly.
Often, literal commands of Jesus such as pilgrimages have two and three fold benefits. Besides the
very physical connections with the sacred that they offer arriving at places of sacred history,
pilgrimages are also a form of penance for sins. Because of the sacrifice of time, money, and risk to
make these pilgrimages, best seen by Kempe s outrageous devotion in leaving behind her life and
family for long periods of time, pilgrimages assist in erasing sins in ones life. Another reason that
Margery and medieval Christians would embark on these pilgrimages is for the reverence of saints and
their relics that they would visit. The Middle Ages emphasized an important connection to the lives of
past saints believing that the saints still had power to intercede blessings into the lives of religious
people on Earth. Where Margery is set a part from common laity, during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem
she receives a special spiritual gift of cryings that she can not control when religious emotion comes
over her. Describing these outbursts, the author of her autobiography says, The crying was so loud and
so amazing that it astounded people... (Windeatt, 104). It is assumable that emotional experiences

After analysing industry and future prospects Broadhead concluded that FPL would need to have a
commitment to quality and customer service, increase its focus on the utilities industry, expand
capacity, and improve its cost position in order to match with the competitive environment. Moreover,
FPL needed to renew focus on its core business. It planed to sell several of the non utility businesses.
Furthermore, Broadhead commenced an aggressive capital expenditure program designed to meet
projected demand into the next decade. FPL budgeted $6.6 billion, spread over five years, for the
expansion.
The company also felt that it would be prudent to reduce debt, and that part of the cash savings from
the dividend cut would be used for this purpose. At the same time, the company announced plans to
return part of the cash saved by the dividend cut by repurchasing up to 10 million shares of stock over
the next three years. FPL explained that this would reduce shareholders taxes.
We can say that the dividend changes have been so much less volatile than earnings changes because:
1) management believed that shareholders prefer a steady progression in dividends 2) managers are
reluctant to make dividend changes that might have to be reversed. They are particularly worried
about a dividend increase, which would affect the stock price. Broadhead needed money to invest in
FPL; therefore, he needed to make the stock price increase in order to

Gladwell s Writing Style In Outliers By George Gladwell
Gladwell s overall writing style in Outliers managed to convey his message using formal yet simple
diction and mostly uncomplicated syntax. His writing was symbolic at times, but also quite literal at
others. The book was relatable, memorable, and easy to understand. He uses some rhetorical devices,
such as this polysyndeton: he s tall and gawky and sixteen years old (Gladwell 42). He also used other
literary devices, such as dialogue: it came out of the blue (Gladwell 248). These devices added
complexity and depth and also caught my attention. They are key to writing a book that keeps the
reader interested and helps them pay attention to and remember key details. The impact of organizing
the book into Part 1: Opportunity and Part 2: Legacy was that it showed there was a clear division
between the two parts of achieving success. Having this distinction helps the reader to learn each
concept and in the end, be able to understand the overall theme. For opportunity, he describes how
opportunities need to emerge in order for success to be reached, such as how [t]heir world their culture
and generation and family history gave them the greatest of opportunities (Gladwell 158) in the case
of many people. Gladwell distinguishes the two parts of the book in part two, saying that so far, we

Presentational Devices in Chicken Run Essay
Presentational Devices in Chicken Run
Chicken Run is an animated film about a group of chickens trying to escape from a chicken farm. The
film is a spoof of the film The Great Escape and as with that film there are characters, who represent
good and characters who represent evil. In Chicken Run, the character that represents good is the
chicken, Ginger. The chicken farm owner, Mrs. Tweedie, portrays evil.
The film makers of Chicken Run have used presentational devices to give us clues about each
character. They use camera angles, setting, costume, lighting, music, sound effects, body language and

As with most war films the prisoners design escape plans. Chicken Run, is no different, with the
chickens designing numerous plans to escape, with little success. Many war films also have victims in
them. Chicken Run also has a convention for this, with Edwina the chicken being decapitated by the
villain Mrs. Tweedie. Finally, the last convention I will mention is the roll call. In war films the
prisoners are often told to line up for inspection, and Chicken Run adapts this, in the way the chickens
have to line up to have their eggs inspected.
Moving away conventions of war films, the film also has conventions of everyday household objects.
The chickens use screw drivers, hammers, and many other tools for building their contraptions which
they use in their attempt to escape from the farm. Another thing would be the fact that the chickens
dress much like humans do. For example the chicken, Ginger wears a hat, and the rooster on the farm
a scarf. Both these conventions serve, to make the viewers feel more familiar with the chickens and
therefore relate to them.
Now, moving onto the question. I will begin with how the film makers use different camera shots to
portray Ginger as a good character and Mrs. Tweedie as an evil one. However, I will first describe the

Naked Lunch Play Analysis
Naked Lunch
Naked Lunch is a play written by Michael Hollinger that talks about a couple that has been drifting
apart. Vernon tried to change his relationship with Lucy, and invite her to eat steak with him. As the
play starts, Vernon sees that Lucy isn t eating; rather playing with the food. Vernon confronts her and
she admits that she became a vegetarian after they have broken up. But, it was something she had been
thinking about and wanted to do, even when she was in the relationship with Vernon. Throughout the
play, Vernon thinks he was the reason why she became a vegetarian and tries to get Lucy to eat the
meat. He starts making her feel like a joke for trying to fulfill the life she wants to live. Towards the

What I mean is, there is a deeper meaning that we have to understand. As I read the play multiple
times, I finally understood the deeper meaning behind it. One example would be that as the couple
was drifting apart, it shows a huge change on Lucy s side. When she stops eating meat, it shows that
she wants to be a better version of herself because she can now live the better and healthier life of
herself without having someone to stop her. That explains why she wanted to cut Vernon out of her
life. But, he doesn t understand why Lucy was pushing him to the side. I think this is something that
happens in relationships every day. A couple will break up and there is always that one person who
doesn t understand why things happen the way they happen and will become offensive and abusive
until things become the way they want. Another metaphor can be seen from the steak. In the play,
Vernon is forcing Lucy to eat the steak as he literally shoves it in her mouth. That shows that in their
relationship, he was controlling because as we can clearly see, he doesn t value anything she wants or
decides on her own. Instead, he tries to find loopholes to put out what he wants. This also happens in
abusive relationships because one person always makes the decision and if the other person doesn t
listen, something bad usually happens, and sometimes makes it hard for them to be safe if they want to
leave the

The Novel The Handmaid Tale Imagine knowing that a group of people are attempting to take full control of society and the way to live life, but there is nothing that can be done to stop them from accomplishing it. That s exactly what has been occurring to societies around the world for centuries: Hitler in Germany, Stalin in Russia, and Idi Amin in Uganda, but still continues due to a leader or Regime s clever techniques to gradually attain power in society without the acknowledgement of citizens. Similarly, in the dystopian novel The Handmaids Tale, a staged terrorist attack kills the President, which leads to the government being taken over by the Republic of Gilead, who ultimately transforms the state of Gilead into a women s nightmare. The women in the novel are forced to be sex slaves in society, in order to produce babies for the infertile men in the state of Gilead, where fertility rates are significantly low. However, the Republic of Gilead forces citizens to follow their theocratic ideology through misleading the entire population with their clever techniques to accomplish their goal of having full power and eventually form a totalitarian society. Thus, in The Handmaids Tale, by Margaret Atwood, misinterpreted references to the bible s scriptures and manipulative techniques are used by the Regime of Gilead to form a totalitarian society. In order to deliver a packet, a sender may have to wait for a certain period of time [4] until its receiver becomes active. Sleep latency degrades the performance (e.g., delay and energy consumption) of various kinds of data forwarding designs in low duty cycle networks. There are two features that make flooding in low duty cycle networks challenging. First, a packet is unlikely to be received by multiple nodes simultaneously as in always awake networks. To broadcast a packet, a sender has to transmit the same packet multiple times if its receivers do not wake up at the same time. Thus flooding in such networks is realized essentially by multiple unicasts. Second, unlike wired networks, wireless communication is notoriously unreliable [4]. A transmission is repeated if the previous transmissions are not successful due to wireless loss. The combination of low duty cycle operation and unreliable links necessitates the design of a different flooding mechanism than those found in wired networks and always awake wireless networks. These combined have a knock on effects on reliability and cost [4]. One straightforward solution could be building a routing tree for flooding. Yet this type of solutions have been shown [7] to be fragile, because the failure of a parent node prevents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Young American s Discovery of the Silent Majority History panders to the glorious and dramatic while often there is a story untold. Perhaps it is less exciting, but no less crucial in understanding history as a whole. Thus is the story of the silent majority. On November 3rd 1969, one year after his victory in the United States Presidential race, President Nixon issued an address to the American public in which he coined the term silent majority. President Nixon s address began by describing the situation he inherited when taking office. Nixon described the situation as such: The war had been going on for four years. If a vocal minority, however fervent its cause, prevails over reason and the will of the majority, this nation has no future as a free society (Episode). President Nixon proceeded to address the concerns of the vocal minority and then to address what he termed the silent majority. From reading the address in its entirety one gets an overall tone of an issuance of comfort, rather than just an aim to inform. President Nixon s comforting speeches did little to silence the vocal minority however as they continued to voice concerns just after his second inauguration in 1972. A student writing for the Albany Student Press issued this concern in January of 1972; In 1968, the Republican candidate Richard Nixon promised to end the war in Southeast Asia; in 1972, the President remains adamant against setting any date for total withdrawal of American forces...(Oringher). The author continued on a rant exclaiming the failed promises of the Nixon administration and claiming the President had done nothing to ameliorate unemployment and nothing to help women, blacks, or native Americans. The Raven and Incident in a Rose Garden are two poems that explore common beliefs and misconceptions about death. Though both poems differ in setting, tone, and mood there are surprising similarities in the literary tools they use and in the messages they attempt to convey. The setting and mood establish the tone and feel of a poem. In The Raven we are launched into a bleak and dreary winters night where a depressed narrator pines for his dead girlfriend. In Incident in a Rose Garden we are cast into a garden on a bright summers day where the frightened gardener seeks to flee death to be with his living family. It is hard to come up with two more different settings. Consider the bleak and dreary winter night versus the walk in the sunny summer flower garden. There are also two completely different moods, one glum and morose and the other excited and frantic. Symbolism is a literary tool that is commonly used to convey ideas. In book 9 Plato discusses the aspects of the tyrannical man. He mentions that the tyrants are someone who is consumed by lawless desires. One question I have is the tyrannical man destined to be a tyrant because he has a noble democratic father? These desires lead men towards ghastly, shameless, criminal actions that are particularly bad for someone in an position of power. Socrates offers an example of a lawless desire is the desire to sleep with one s mother, something that is horrible to do in any society. It is made clear that all of us have lawless desires, which is indubitably true. The proof is that these desires occasionally come out at night, in our dreams, when the rational part of us is not on guard. But only the tyrannical man allows these desires to emerge in life while he is awake during the day. Plato s description continues, the tyrannical man is the son of the democratic man. His father is not lawless, but he does indulge unnecessary desires. Just like the father, the son is exposed to drones, men with lawless desires. However the father had his own oligarchic father s thriftiness to pull him toward the middle road of democracy. This is crucial for the balance one must have to be a ruler in society. Now this son brought up on the democratic ethos, moves further toward lawlessness. The father and entire household try to win him back, but the ultimate triumph of the lawless is inevitable. While many people eat whatever they please, there are many individuals who choose to live and maintain a healthy life style. While almost any type of food is available in our stores and markets here in the U.S., this does not mean much of produce we consume is actually grown here. Especially when it comes to the fruits and vegetables we consume every day, many of them are grown elsewhere. While we import much of our fresh produce, many people fail to see the complications these countries and farmers go through on a daily basis to get us these crops we need. A fruit like bananas for instance has more of a history than many people could even imagine. I m here to discuss the history of this naturally consumed fruit as well as speak about the countless labor and environmental issues that have taken place. The Black Man s Existence Essay Science tells us that everything that we as humans do comes from a basic need to survive, and this tells us that the desire to live, or the fear of death, is one of the most primal things that every person feels. In America, this primal desire to survive is what governs African American men in their daily life as a result of the constant fear that their bodies will be taken from them in an act of violence. In Between the World and Me, Ta Nehsi Coates writes about the state of black bodies in America, focusing on the racial violence and harassment that black men face on a daily basis, in the form of a letter to his son. The black man s existence in America is established by this ever present fear of death due to the fact that their bodies and their general existence is so policed through social subjugation and institutionalized violence. Moreover, Coates explains that the white identity is constructed in comparison to black existence, and in order to keep white identity as supreme, America allows for the continuous physical attack and constant disenfranchisement of African Americans. Evidence from the text will show that Coates s combines personal experience with beautifully rhythmic prose in order to make it clear to the reader the ways in which the African American existence is controlled and dictated in America. It also clarifies how this is done through the ever present threat of violence, and that the reason this policing takes place is to solidify whiteness as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Saying we may live ever gives the reader the thought of life after death, and she is saying that she wants to live eternally with her husband. Edwards had the same idea, but in a darker sense. My Love Of Photography He had been around the globe and back, looking at thousands of photographs, year after year, day after day, second after second, trying to fill this hole he had inside of him. It had been eight years since he lost his mother after a long and hard battle, but it had felt like a century since she was with him. Her love of photography carried on through him, and her work would never be forgotten. Her unique style and perspective was like no other, and throughout his career as a buyer of the most beautiful and most famous photos, he had never seen one quite like hers. There were very few photographs hanging from the wall, and he thought to himself that he would not be purchasing anything that day, until he saw it. As he was about to turn back around and walk out, something caught his eye. His hand unwrapped from the handle of his briefcase, and it dropped to the floor making a thumping sound. His eyes were opened wide with the look of complete and utter shock, and his body went numb. Perturbation of O GlcNAcylation through Thiamet G, an OGA inhibitor, was assessed using a well established VSV G eGFP reporter assay Citations. The trafficking of a temperature sensitive VSV G eGFP mutant that is transported by COPII from the ER to the Golgi at the permissive temperature can be evaluated by the development of characteristic juxanuclear punctate fluorescence (Golgi) from diffuse/reticular fluorescence (ER) over time. Treatment with Thiamet G slowed Golgi accumulation of VSV G eGFP, indicating that OGA activity is required for normal COPII trafficking (Figure 1). Due to extensive protein protein ... • 30. Analysis Of John Updike s Araby John Updike s penchant for appropriating great works of literature and giving them contemporary restatement in his own fiction is abundantly documented as is the fact that, among his favorite sources, James Joyce looms large.[1] With special affinity for Dubliners, Updike has, by common acknowledgment, written at least one short story that strongly resembles the acclaimed Araby, not only in plot and theme, but in incidental detail. That story, the 1960 You ll Never Know, Dear, How Much I Love You like Araby tells the tale of a poor, romantically infatuated young boy who, though obstructed by parental slowness, journeys with innocent urgency, coins in hand, to a seemingly magical carnival only to find there, behind its facades, ... At 19, Updike s protagonist, Sammy, is a good bit older than Joyce s at the opposite end of adolescence, it would seem. While in Joyce s boy we readily believe such confusion between the gallant and profane, I think we needn t assume that Sammy is likewise unable to distinguish between the two quite normal impulses. His attraction to the girl in the aisle is certainly far more anatomically and less ambiguously expressed than that of Joyce s boy to Mangan s sister. But it is Beauty that confounds the issue. When human aesthetics come into play, when the object of a young man s carnal desire also gratifies him aesthetically, that is when the confusion arises. in Irish Catholic Dublin of the 1890s,[3] such youthful beauty not surprisingly invokes analogies between Mangan s sister and the Queen of Heaven (though the swinging of her body and the soft rope of her hair toss[ing] from side to side [Joyce 30]), which captivate the boy, hint at something less spiritual than Madonna worship). And while beauty s benchmarks in Sammy s more secular mid century America are more anatomical than spiritual, Updike does have Sammy call his young femme fatal Queenie, and he does make her the center of a trinity of sorts, showing her two friends at one point huddl[ing] against her for relief ( A P 189). When Hawthorne was four years old his father was in an accident and died on the scene, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings alone. Thus, leading him to have respect for all women, and it is reflected in the story. For instance, the main character Beatrice is this aesthetic, sweet, and a naïve woman and Giovanni is just focused more on her beauty rather than anything else. Moreover, when Giovanni first sees Beatrice in the garden, he describes her as the most beautiful woman he s ever seen and is just blinded by her beauty. What he doesn t know is that her father, Doctor Rappaccini, is a scientist who cares more about science more than anything else. The place where Beatrice and Giovanni spend all their time together is in the garden, which represents loneliness , and unfortunately one of the main characters will learn that the hard way. When Giovanni meets Professor Baglioni, a professor of medicine who is Rappaccini s rival he helps him get Beatrice, or at least that s what Giovanni thinks. However, what Giovanni does not know is that the love of his life isn t who he thinks she is. Beatrice Rappaccini is the daughter of a scientist who is experimenting with plants, and they have a beautiful garden in the backyard. She is the most beautiful woman that Giovanni has ever seen and people around the village agree that she is beautiful, but nobody knows the real her, they just notice her appearance. She is full of life, full of energy, and her heart is so big and there isn t a drop of evilness in her body. For an instance, the reptile contorted itself violently, and then lay motionless in the sunshine. Beatrice observed this remarkable phenomenon, and crossed herself (Hawthorne 411). When people cross themselves it s because they re at a funeral, something horrible just happened to one, or someone important to them. The selected speeches cover topics centered around African Americans, specifically African American education. Most of the speeches, compiled in the book by Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr. himself, are from his Jackson State University Founders Day speeches. The speeches are arranged chronologically, and some of the speeches are given discrete introductions to elucidate the concern, purpose, or problem being addressed (Peoples ix). The book s title is a little misleading because one underlying theme of the entire book is that the struggles for African Americans are not over. Often, literal commands of Jesus such as pilgrimages have two and three fold benefits. Besides the very physical connections with the sacred that they offer arriving at places of sacred history, pilgrimages are also a form of penance for sins. Because of the sacrifice of time, money, and risk to make these pilgrimages, best seen by Kempe s outrageous devotion in leaving behind her life and family for long periods of time, pilgrimages assist in erasing sins in ones life. Another reason that Margery and medieval Christians would embark on these pilgrimages is for the reverence of saints and their relics that they would visit. The Middle Ages emphasized an important connection to the lives of past saints believing that the saints still had power to intercede blessings into the lives of religious people on Earth. Where Margery is set a part from common laity, during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem she receives a special spiritual gift of cryings that she can not control when religious emotion comes over her. Furthermore, Broadhead commenced an aggressive capital expenditure program designed to meet projected demand into the next decade. Gladwell s Writing Style In Outliers By George Gladwell Gladwell s overall writing style in Outliers managed to convey his message using formal yet simple diction and mostly uncomplicated syntax. His writing was symbolic at times, but also quite literal at others. The book was relatable, memorable, and easy to understand. He uses some rhetorical devices, such as this polysyndeton: he s tall and gawky and sixteen years old (Gladwell 42). He also used other literary devices, such as dialogue: it came out of the blue (Gladwell 248). These devices added complexity and depth and also caught my attention. They are key to writing a book that keeps the reader interested and helps them pay attention to and remember key details. The impact of organizing the book into Part 1: Opportunity and Part 2: Legacy was that it showed there was a clear division between the two parts of achieving success. Having this distinction helps the reader to learn each concept and in the end, be able to understand the overall theme. For opportunity, he describes how opportunities need to emerge in order for success to be reached, such as how [t]heir world their culture and generation and family history gave them the greatest of opportunities (Gladwell 158) in the case of many people. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As with most war films the prisoners design escape plans. Chicken Run, is no different, with the chickens designing numerous plans to escape, with little success. Many war films also have victims in them. Chicken Run also has a convention for this, with Edwina the chicken being decapitated by the villain Mrs. Tweedie. Finally, the last convention I will mention is the roll call. In war films the prisoners are often told to line up for inspection, and Chicken Run adapts this, in the way the chickens have to line up to have their eggs inspected. Moving away conventions of war films, the film also has conventions of everyday household objects. The chickens use screw drivers, hammers, and many other tools for building their contraptions which they use in their attempt to escape from the farm. Another thing would be the fact that the chickens dress much like humans do. For example the chicken, Ginger wears a hat, and the rooster on the farm a scarf. Both these conventions serve, to make the viewers feel more familiar with the chickens and therefore relate to them. Now, moving onto the question. What I mean is, there is a deeper meaning that we have to understand. As I read the play multiple times, I finally understood the deeper meaning behind it. One example would be that as the couple was drifting apart, it shows a huge change on Lucy s side. When she stops eating meat, it shows that she wants to be a better version of herself because she can now live the better and healthier life of herself without having someone to stop her. That explains why she wanted to cut Vernon out of her life. But, he doesn t understand why Lucy was pushing him to the side. I think this is something that happens in relationships every day. A couple will break up and there is always that one person who doesn t understand why things happen the way they happen and will become offensive and abusive until things become the way they want. Another metaphor can be seen from the steak. In the play, Vernon is forcing Lucy to eat the steak as he literally shoves it in her mouth. That shows that in their relationship, he was controlling because as we can clearly see, he doesn t value anything she wants or decides on her own. Instead, he tries to find loopholes to put out what he wants. This also happens in abusive relationships because one person always makes the decision and if the other person doesn t listen, something bad usually happens, and sometimes makes it hard for them to be safe if they want to leave the ...
