Don Crow Laws Segregation Laws And Using Music As An Civil...
Throughout the late 19th century, African Americans did not have the same rights as white people,
which led towards the establishment of Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws segregated blacks from whites
in a political, educational, and social setting, which created unfair treatment towards people of color.
In Devil in the Grove, four African American boys, known as the Groveland Boys, were falsely
accused of raping a white woman in Florida, which was known as the Groveland case. Thurgood
Marshall, who was a part of The National Association of Advancement for Colored People (NAACP),
helped to solve the Groveland case, as he was an advocate in fighting against Jim Crow segregation.
The labor force, vigilante groups, and legal precedents led towards the establishment of Jim Crow
policies by segregating black people from white people in public areas. African Americans contested
these policies by creating legal organizations that overturned cases supporting segregation laws and
using music as a way to protest against the Jim Crow policies. In the labor force, there was pressure
and unfair treatment towards African Americans, which was a foundational element in establishing
Jim Crow laws. Gilbert King wrote, McCarthy learned that whites in Groveland (who accounted for
about 60 percent of the town s population of one thousand) were tolerant of blacks, as long as they
continued to work in white owned citrus groves. The Negroes do most of the work around here

Compare And Contrast The Lottery And The Most Dangerous Game
The Lottery vs. The Most Dangerous Game
ENGL 102: Literature and Composition
Summer B 2017
Mandy Greer L26834967
APA
Outline
I. Thesis
a. The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell shed light upon
the human nature and its indifference to suffering until they become the suffer. The stories tell
realistically what happens when a society decides to become the jury and judge on the value of human
life. Both stories have haunting comparisons that deal with immorality. They give similarities for what
is considered acceptable and everyday life in the characters society. The authors use vivid and detailed
points of view to give the stories reality roots. These two stories are more unique with the differences
being about man versus man in the survival for human life and the other a woman against her whole
village s belief. The Most Dangerous Game has the character Rainsford speaking about the animals he
hunts. The dreary feel of the crew and the murk of the night add suspense to what is held beyond the
fog. The conversation between Rainsford and The General Zaroff is a precursor for an intriguing
climax. The Lottery begins its story with a simple town setting and villagers coming together for a
lottery. It picks up momentum once you realize what is actually at stake in this lottery. The lottery
consists of a ritualistic killing to preserve fruitfulness of the village. Every year there is the ritual of
the choosing and the stoning

The Case Of Young Sandy
In the case of young Sandy there are many things that need to be taken into consideration when
planning on how to deal with his case. There are many factors that need to be understood about his
case and these factors need to be dealt with on in depth level to truly understand what will be the best
course of action for his future treatment, whether that will be going to a young offenders institution or
other forms of rehabilitation.
From a young age Sandy never had a stable childhood, coming from a deprived area of the city, which
had high levels of crime and low levels of employed citizens in the area. As expected in such areas of
a city, living there can cause a negative up bringing for any child that lives there and Sandy is no
exception to this. To start off with Sandy s Father was never around when he was younger, as he was
constantly in and out of prison as his son was growing up. This meant that Sandy never had a positive
male role model growing up as he lived with his grandmother. Looking into Sutherland, Parson and
Cohen s sex role theory (Sutherland (1947), Parson (1937) and Cohen (1955, cited in Walklate, 2007,
pg 91 93)) you could explain that as a result of Sandy having no masculine role model in his life and
only have a female role model. Which would only give him a tender and gentle influence in his life
and he would ve felt conflicted in his upbringing and would assume an attitude opposite to that of his
female role model and would become masculine by

Meaning Of Geography Vs Geography
History rhymes, but geography endures. was once stated by Andrew C. Katen. History, in fact, does
not repeat itself. However, it does seem to have recurring events. With geography, on the other hand,
the learning possibilities are endless. As people continually change, it causes the environment around
us to change, which makes geography an ongoing happening. For example, the population is always
increasing and decreasing because of the number of births and deaths. So therefore, more and more
space is being taken up to provide living space for the large amount of humans on Earth. Geography
deals with not only maps, compasses, and landforms, but with people of different cultures and how
they interact with the space around them. Many geographers feel that geography is how people adapt
their environment to fit their culture (and vice versa), while other geographers feel as though
geography is about how different factors make the earth diverse and how things are laid out based on
the diversity of the earth. According to some geographers, the definition of geography is how people
adapt, or change, their environment to fit their culture. In document one, it states, ...Geography
emphasizes people, their ways of life, their divisions, and their endeavors to solve their problems and
to adapt the regional environmental conditions to their ways and means... This basically is saying that
people change the environment around them so that it is able to go together with their goals,

Examples Of Discourse Analysis Essay
2.0 Critical Discourse Analysis
There has been much written in recent years about CDA in its broadest sense. It appears to be quite
difficult to define in simple terms and this is probably due to the nature of CDA. It encompasses a
number of general tenets and uses a large range of techniques. It aims primarily to identify socio
political inequalities that exist in society. Fairclough (1995b) provides us with a useful definition that
encapsulates most other definitions of CDA:
[CDA is the study of] often opaque relationships of causality and determination between (a) discursive
practices, events and texts, and (b) wider social and cultural structures, relations and processes; to

Baby Designer Babies
Greetings to all you prospective parents! Please grab a seat, a baby trait catalog and we shall begin the
process of building your perfect child.
So will it be a boy or a girl? Will you go for brown hair or blonde? How about a redhead? Would you
prefer a taller child? Intelligent and good with his hands? Do you want them to be a slender book
worm or a muscular athlete? The sky is the limit!
My friends what you have just witnessed could be a very real introduction given by a genetic
counsellor or a baby designer company to their clients in the not so distant future. The term designer
babies was popularized in 2000 by Glenn McGee in his book A Perfect Baby: A Pragmatic Approach
to Genetics . It refers to the use of pre implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), along with elements of
gene therapy and genetic modification to select and design a baby ... Show more content on

The process of designing your own baby would be very expensive, which would prevent everybody
except the extremely wealthy to be able to take advantage of this technology. Even relatively routine
procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF) can cost up to $20,000 according to IVF Canada, with PGD
adding an additional $10,000 to that total. Since the able to afford this practice are of the elite class,
thus their customized babies would have have superior advantage over people like me and you from
the second they are born because not only do they belong to a wealthy family, but they also are
designed to be more mentally and physically fit . I am not alone in this belief, Silver Lee in his book
Remaking Eden describes the destructive effects a class structure of genetic haves and have nots could
have. Having children that are more equipped for life than those who belong to lower classes creates
new class system between the genetically enhanced and the not genetically enhanced which would
tear open the rich poor gap that already exists in

Boo Radley
People tend to get upset when details get left out when books are turned into movies or plays. To Kill
a Mockingbird is about a family living in a fictional town called Maycomb, Alabama during the Great
Depression. The family consisted of a father, Atticus Finch, a brother, Jem Finch, and a sister, Jean
Louise (Scout) Finch. At this time, racial discrimination existed and caused tension everywhere.
Although, without racial discrimination readers wouldn t be introduced to a shy character named
Arthur (Boo) Radley. Boo Radley was a young man who stayed within the confinement of his home.
He is rumored to be scary, but he actually just chooses to stay inside away from all the tragedy
happening outside. In the play, several details such as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scout is still very young during the book and doesn t seem to quite understand all that is happening.
She thinks that her father is of very old age, but in reality he is not. For instance, Atticus was feeble:
he was nearly fifty (Lee, 118). Additionally, Harper Lee told the book from Scout s point of view to
show a child s perspective, but perhaps Miss Maudie s narration of the play was of greater importance
to the audience.
Changing the narration of the story helps the audience understand, but changing the opening scenes
helps them follow the story. Another difference between the book and the play is that the book opens
with Jem breaking his arm, while the play opens with Its a sin to kill a mockingbird. The author,
Harper Lee, wanted to symbolize the meaning of the mockingbird in the story. In addition,
mockingbirds don t harm humans in anyway. Mockingbirds simply sing for everyone to enjoy with
pleasure. Lee writes That s why it s a sin to kill a mockingbird (119). In the play, they started with It s
a sin to kill a mockingbird to emphasize the importance of the saying throughout the story. The
difference between the opening scenes helps readers follow along, while the difference in the setting
of the fight scene allows the audience to

The novel And Then There Were None contains a number of themes followed as isolation , deception

very well goes with the novel as Justice Wargrave purposely picks a secluded island where none of the

Online Social Networking Service Company
0. Facebook is an online social networking service company since 2004. It was started as the online
platform to be connected for ivy league university students and later extended to general public. It has
a market worth of $ 148 billion in 2014 and has more than 1 billion subscribers online. The case
illustrates about the exploitation of user data by Facebook to generate revenue. The user data is used to
deliver to highest bidder and earn revenue. 1. Facebook is collecting the extensive personal
information from its users. The information is in the form of personal details, pictures and life events.
The reason for turning the information into big databases is to serve relevant advertising that suits the
taste of a particular person. But, collecting the information to generate revenue is the unethical
practice in business and that is the biggest dilemma of Facebook to earn revenue without privacy
damage of the users as it provides free service. The company faced various lawsuits for gathering user
data without user consent. Even they keep the track of the users visiting Facebook s widget on other
websites by capturing time and IP address information. It is not sure whether the company will stop
finding alternative ways to exploit data and selling it to highest bidders for advertising. The reason
being the limited source of revenues and failure of management to take care of privacy concerns. 2.
Facebook s mainstream revenue is entirely dependent on advertising. In the year,

Anti Inflationary Policy Essay
Introduction
Anti inflationary policies are the policies taken by the government to announce inflation target
lowering it to zero, in the beginning of the year, which at that time is considered optimal. The
government wants to keep the inflation level low in an economy. It is the continuous rise in the
general price level of goods and services over a period of time in an economy. As we know inflation
can cause serious social consequences, if it s not perfectly anticipated, money as a measure of value or
as a medium of exchange is undermined.
The issue of credibility
The announcement of the government of anti inflation will form expectations and be embedded into
contracts. Wage contracts are also signed in this period. In this ... Show more content on

According to Eijffinger and Hoeberichts ( 1998), the money supply can be modelled as:

It does show that lower level of inflation will be achieved by delegating monetary policy to a

inflation aversion, (ε=0) the independence does not matter and in the same way, if the central bank is
fully controlled by the government, (ϒ=0) the conservativeness does not matter, unless it is the
optimal combination of ϒ and ε.
However, McCallum (1995) criticised this solution of reducing inflation bias. He argued that
delegation barely relocates the time inconsistency problem rather than resolving it, since the

her skin color and body image affect while growing up in the U.S. She was born in Puerto Rico,
people there considered her a gringa (white), but when she came to the U.S she felt the internalized
racism. She came to the U.S just like any other Latina, it didn t matter that her skin was lighter than
other Latinos, for the white people she was considered a person of color, a brown Puerto Rican who
was dirty just like her skin color. She talks about how her own people can be racist with each other. I

Analysis Of The Poem Songwriting For Under Achievers
Songwriting for Under Achievers I chose to research information on how to write music because I
have always wanted to write my own music. I chose this topic because I knew I would learn a lot from
it and that it would help me in my future. I wanted to learn how to write great lyrics for my songs and
make melodies so that I may perform them to an audience. I had to research the different ways of
writing lyrics, how to come up with a title for your song, how to make a melody, and how to apply
chords to that melody. I have learned an easy way to make songs of your own so that they seem
professional but anybody could do it. This is the basics of Songcraft. In songcraft, the first thing that
you must think of should be the lyrics to your song. You may not have to use lyrics in your song which
does not change anything but most modern music these days have lyrics to express the mood of the
song more. If you want lyrics in your song or songs then the first step is to brainstorm. Choose a topic
that you want your song to cover and let your imagination run wild. Never hesitate in writing down
the first words that come to mind if you do then that is your first mistake. Lyrics aren t what somebody
has just chosen from a book or poem they are applied in the way that the artist imagines them not how
she/he wants them to sound. When I say this I do not mean that they never fix their lyrics but that they
know there meaning in the song from the lyrics even if the lyrics do not make sense

Literary Devices In Those Winter Sundays
Relationships between children and their parents can be complex. Often, once the child grows up, they
begin to have a greater understanding and are able to reflect on those relationships. In the poem, Those
Winter Sundays, Robert Hayden writes of a son looking back on his relationship with his father and it
s complexity. Their intricate relationship comes from the son feeling guilt about how unaware he was
of everything his father did and how blinded he was by his childish judgments. Using details to look
back on childhood, sound devices to show a masked feeling and repetition of the word cold to
elaborate on the emotional distance the father shows, the speaker portrays his seemingly strict, yet
caring father and an unknowing and indifferent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This begins with the first cold (Hayden 2) depicting a father constantly trying to do what s right for his
family and having to deal with a son who s unappreciative and constantly giving him the cold shoulder
because he can only see what shows up before him, unable to see past the wall of ice. In the second
stanza the word cold is compiled with onomatopoeia so the reader can almost hear the sound of
coldness, hear the cold splintering, breaking (Hayden 6). This signifies the son chipping away at the
ice before him and seeing past his father s rough exterior to every small sacrifice he has done for his
family. To end everything the use of the word cold (Hayden 11) symbolizes him breaking through and
driving out every piece of hostile ice blocking the view of his true father. Once removed, he saw a
man who worked hard every single day did everything he knew how to for his family and his son.
Reflecting, he asks What did I know, what did I know / of love s austere and lonely offices (Hayden
14)? Love was a part of everything his father did and worked for. As a child, he only saw the side of
his father that struggled to show his love through typical words and expressions leaving him heavy
with guilt. He is now unable to thank his father for everything because what did he know of the love

My First Vacation Destination
In the summer of 2016 my family and I took a 2 week vacation to a couple different locations we all
wanted to visit. We decided to drive to our first destination, which was a 13 hour drive! On the way to
our first destination, we stopped in Athens, Alabama to stay the night and aquire some grub. We were
able to eat some dinner while we were at the hotel and we ordered the most incomparable pizza ever!
The pizza place s name was Joe s Pizza The owner s name is Joe and has multiple Guinness World
Records for his pizza making skills. All the pizzas are hand made and put into a brick pizza oven to
accommodate just the right doneness and taste. Then after that mouthwatering night in Athens,
Alabama we decided to drive on and continue to our first vacation destination. After a couple restroom
breaks and some lunch we finally arrived at Splash Resort in Panama City, Florida! The ocean was
breathtaking and as magnificent as ever it was one of those how can anything be so beautiful kind of
things. It just made me speechless, the water was perfect, the air was warm, and I just wanted to jump

The, Sharing The Secrets Of The Universe
Have you ever walked alongside the Gods, sharing the secrets of the universe? A whirlwind of truth
permeates and resonates with every fiber of your being, the ultimate osmosis of what is, was, and will
be. Gusts of wind throw themselves at you with the force of a giant s kick, tearing away all that isn t
held down. Hats. Scarves. Fear. Pain. Nothing is safe from its icy grip. It s like an out of body
experience that you never want to end a dissociative spell that makes you feel at one with the heavens.
There is something poetic about standing at the edge of a cliff, peering over the rocks and reeds at the
choppy water below, a void so blue that you risk losing your very soul inside of it. These are the Cliffs
of Moher, a natural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why would one choose to leave this place? The wind pauses for a moment and I hear a melody in the
brief silence. Can the others hear this, I wonder? Faces morph into shadowed blurs as they fight on.
Soon the wind picks up once more; the question left unanswered. It appears to be a novelty for some,
standing where the Gods touch the earth, pausing not to feel the air but instead to take a selfie. In a
way, I understand wanting to record the moment, however, why would one let that be their driving
purpose? At this most sublime of locations, I would hope that reverence would consume the travelers.
After all, it has consumed me.
Soon afterwards a speck of water hit my glasses and I return my gaze to the sea. Waves rush upon the
face of the cliffs hundreds of feet below, caught in the same gusts that have captured my spirit.
Flowing as I flow, froth and foam rising from the depths, spilling over like the tears on my cheeks. I
finally understand Icarus, who loved the sun so much that he let it end his life. Looking at the light
breaking through the clouds, I feel that same longing. Is this how the world was before Man took its
first breath? Do those ethereal beings remain here because it reminds them of home? If so, it is
something we have in common. I do not wish to leave; though I must.

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of
overwhelming obstacles. This quote is the entire theme of the book called the Mockingjay by Suzanne
Collins. With this quote in mind, Katniss Everdeen is the hero in District 13. In chapters five, six, and
seven, Katniss Everdeen is being faced with many difficult obstacles and situations that has to deal
with her being the hero called the Mockingjay. To start off with, Katniss Everdeen is encountered by a
situation that represents her as a fierce Mockingjay in chapter five. In other words, she is told to

Using Quantitative Pcr For Hiv Viral Load Control
Results
An HIV GWAS SNP marks expression of a long non coding RNA (lncRNA).
Human chromosome 3p21 22 harbors a cluster of chemokine receptor genes, several of which serve as
major or minor co receptors of HIV 1 [1]. The genetic associations of CCR5 and CCR2 gene
polymorphisms with HIV 1 pathogenesis are well known [2 5], but any potential role of variation in
other regions of the cluster is largely unknown. An intergenic SNP (rs1015164 A/G) downstream of
the CCRL2 gene was shown to associate with HIV viral load control [6] and progression to AIDS [7]
in two independent cohorts of HIV infected patients. Importantly, the SNP showed genome wide
significant association with HIV outcomes in meta analyses that collectively examined genotyping
data from 6,315 HIV infected patients [8]. The SNP is in close genomic proximity to a non coding
RNA gene RP 11 24F11.2 (Fig. S1). We were able to detect and quantify the polyadenylated lncRNA
transcript in the total RNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) using quantitative PCR
(qPCR). Specificity of the primers was confirmed by sequencing of the amplicons. We designated this
lncRNA as Lnc11.2. The rs1015164A allele, which associated with higher viral loads (OR=1.4, p=3.3
×10 5) [6] and more rapid disease progression (HR=1.4, p=8.6 ×10 6) [7] correlated with higher
expression levels of Lnc11.2 in PBLs (Fig. 1).

Life Events And Stress, Stressors And Frustration
Boot Camp Days Finally, it has come, the final paper! Although I will miss all the great things we
learn about in class every week, I will not miss having to think of information to type in these papers.
This week the topics I have chosen to discuss are; life events and stress, stressors and frustration. The
best way I can relate to these topics is by talking about my personal experiences at Navy Boot Camp.
The worst eight and a half weeks of my life.
The Good Beginning
My journey began, I was leaving the Tampa airport and heading to Chicago, destination Great Lakes,
to become a sailor. At the airport, I was full of many different thoughts and emotions, being excited,
but scared of what was to come.
Arriving at the Chicago O Hare airport we were met by a group of Petty Officers who were a lot nicer
than I thought they would be. Before we left the airport, we had to throw out anything we were not
supposed to have, lip balm, lotions, soaps, we couldn t even keep our toothbrushes. That was fine, at
least I wasn t getting yelled at. Then we loaded up onto a bus and headed to the base.
The Start of the Worst Arriving on base, we pulled up to a building and quickly loaded off the bus and
filed in one by one. There were three different people all yelling different directions. Sadly, the Petty
Officers who picked us up from the airport, were not Recruit Division Commanders (RDC). My hope
of everything continuing to go well was shot down very quickly. Just being there five

Computer Science Statement Of Purpose
Statement of Purpose
Your time is limited, so don t waste it living someone else s life. Steve Jobs
We have been gifted with only one life. It would be frivolous if we are not making the most out of it,
not doing the things that make us happy, not making it count. Life gives us an opportunity to realize
our dreams and fulfill the purpose of our existence. Right from Charles Babbage to Larry Page, there
have been sizable contributions made to the world via computer science. Had these greats given up on
their dreams, the world we live in today would not be the same. Imagine the world without computers.
One can only dread! Today, I stand on the cusp of living my dream the dream of giving back to the
world of computers, making a contribution in computer science by conducting innovative research and
developing something that the world would appreciate. The hunger for obtaining the in depth and
specialized knowledge in computer science has urged me to apply for an MS program in Computer

Narrative Essay About Gilmore Girls
Lorelai raised me. Luke fed me. Emily wanted me. And above all, Richard knew me. Stars Hallow,
circa 2001, stands as the place I come from. At the cusp of Autumn, it all began. The necessary foliage
is sprinkled purposely around the gutters. There She Goes, is playing in the background. This is
Gilmore Girls, at its best. Hold back your flashbacks. Stop thinking of Dawson s Creek, One Tree Hill,
Seventh Heaven, or any other 90 s teenage crap drama. This show is so much more than a single mom,
a budding teenage daughter, a controlling relationship, a Connecticut town, or an eccentric neighbor.
At its core, Gilmore Girls stands as the essence of who I am. Now a days, it is considered a social
priority to find favor in current mind bending intellectual feasts of television. A young scholar such as
myself, is expected to be elbow deep in the latest Aaron Sorkin. Yet, I cling to the wholesome, extinct
WB network. If that makes me a phony, a goon, or a pretentious soccer mom, so be it. Through and
through, I have watched all seven seasons eight times. At twelve years old I entered the world. Today,
I can not say for certain that I have left. I wake up in Stars Hallow and eat my breakfast with the
always colorful neighbors, Babette and Morey. After school, I do my homework ... Show more content

Psychoanalytical Theory Essays
Psychoanalytical Theory Sigmund Freud (1856 1939) was the first person to initiate the thought of
psychoanalysis. According to Friedlander (1947), classical Freudian psychoanalytic explanations of
delinquency focus on abnormalities or disturbances in the individual s emotional development from
early childhood. Since then many people have amended his original writings and presently there are
numerous versions Freud s original psychoanalytical theory. Many of these recent versions are similar
to the original version with the exception that they are updated to current times. Few new models are

86). The psychoanalytical theory focuses on the development of personality, the stages of
development and the emotional problems reflecting some unconscious aspects of one s psychological
functioning. Adler, Mueller, and Laufer (2004) base this theory on three principles. First, The actions
and behavior of an adult are understood in terms of childhood development. Second, Behavior and
unconscious motives are intertwined, and their interaction must be unraveled if we are to understand
criminality. Third, Criminality is essentially a representation of psychological conflict (p. 86). Freud
believes that criminality has a lot to do with the structural model of the mind. He breaks the mind
down into three categories; the Id, Ego, and the Superego. The Id is the unconscious seat of irrational,
antisocial, and instinctual impulses which must be controlled and shaped for social adaptation to life
in society (Akers, 1999, p. 50). When newborn babies are born, they have biological drives that are
unaffected by society. The Id can be considered the instructional forces, which focuses around sexual
desires or drives. This is now the time when the infant knows nothing but the pleasure principle and

Photography Annette Kuhn Photography Analysis
Photography grants the power to seize a moment, a moment so precious, so intimate, so important that
we as humans are allowed to cherish and hold tight to that moment; a chance to reminisce. That
precious moment, as Annette Kuhn says, show[s] not so much that we were once there, as how we
once were (Annette Kuhn 95). The deceased are brought back to life. A childhood is relived. A
relationship is repeatedly forged. Photography imprisons time, holds it hostage chained to the walls of
our memories, giving the viewer the power to continually find the treasure inside, that one split second
in time. Photography captures the essence of a specific time and place; it grants the privilege to relive
that exact moment. A photograph captures what we

Essay On Symbolism In Peter Cather
3. Cather uses many symbols throughout her story to express the essential aspects of the lives of the
characters. One example includes the badger. Cather writes, Don t be scared if you see anything look
out of that hole in the bank over there. That s a badger hole. He s about as big as a big possum, and his
face is striped, black and white. He takes a chicken once in a while, but I won t let the men harm him.
In a new country a body feels friendly to the animals. When she says In a new country a body feels
friends to the animals she is actually relating to Jim. Since Jim is in a new area that he has never been
to, a body (animal or human) can be somewhat comforting to have around. Another example is when
Cather writes, It s no better than a badger hole; no proper dugout at all. the symbol she uses is a
badgers hole. She says this because Peter Krajiek tricks the bohemian family because he is the only
interpreter and the Bohemians didn t speak enough english to ask for advice before buying his cave of
a house. She uses this symbol to describe how awful of a place the Bohemian family is staying in.
Lastly Cather uses the symbol of grass to describe the characters point of view and her point of view
when looking at the earth. Cather says, I felt motion in the landscape; in the fresh, easy blowing
morning wind, and in the earth itself, as if the shaggy grass were a sort of loose hide, and underneath it
herds of wild buffalo were galloping, galloping. Cather uses Jim to

What Is The Theme Of Her First Ball
Katherine Mansfield s short story Her First Ball introduces us to Leila, a country girl on her way to
her first ball with her cousins, the Sheridan sisters. A range of language features convey Leila s
attitude of naive and excitement as the ball begins, and her transition to a young woman who is more
socially experienced and mature by the end of the story. The story conveys the message that loss of
innocence is an inevitable and vital part of the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
At the beginning of the story, Leila s attitude towards the ball is one of exuberance as she has ever
experienced anything like it before. Mansfield uses language features such as similes, personification
and metaphors to emphasize Leila s breathless excitement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text starts off with a giddy tone that accentuates Leila s excitement for the ball Exactly when the
ball began Leila would have found it hard to say. this gives a sense that Leila has lost track of reality,
from being whisked away by the glamour and grandiose of the ball when she first enters the hall.
Around the middle of the text the tone transitions from giddy and cheerful to a more depressing tone
when Leila encounters the fat man. This is shown by the quote It hardly bears thinking about, does it?
said the fat man gloomily. Leila looked at his bald head, and she felt quite sorry for him. Which shows
us the change in tone when Leila meets the fat man. Leila s time with the fat men is characterised by
her being pulled away from the fantasy of the ball and back to reality as she gets shocked by the fat
man s realist/pessimist view. After Leila s encounter with the fat man ends the tone of the text changes
back to cheerful and exuberant with the quote The lights, the azaleas, the dresses, the pink faces, the
velvet chairs, all became one beautiful flying wheel. this shows us that immediately after the fat man
leaves the ball goes back to normal and Leila forgets him and carries on with her youthful fantasy
version of the ball. The changes in the tone of the text shows how adolescents live in the moment and
tend to easily pass things

Social Movement In Australia
Behind every successful social movement is a well executed and planned system and strategy. One of
the most common frameworks of social change is Saul Alinsky s Community Organising, which is
where another common framework known as Feminist Organising developed from. These frameworks
remain relevant today, and more specifically Feminist Organising in relation to a rape culture on
Australian university campuses.
To be able to fully compare and contrast the two frameworks, it is important to understand their
backgrounds.
Saul Alinsky, the founder of Community Organising , began his long organising career in the late 1930
s in Chicago s Back of the Yards neighbourhood (Hancock, 2017). It was here that he took the ideas of
unions and spoke to leaders to expand the systems and strategies to help organise disadvantaged urban
neighbourhoods nationwide (Stall Stoecker, 1998). From here he generated many community
movements, published two books, produced multiple powerful organisations and influenced an entire
generation of organisers (Stall Stoecker, 1998). Feminist organising however, is not associated with
any particular person or social movement (Stall Stoecker, 1998). This ... Show more content on

A major element of feminist organising is that the issue is local and personal. This is very applicable
to our group. Each of the four female members of the group have experienced rape culture to different
extents, and the one male of the group can relate to this through his own experience and relationships
with the women in his life. It also applies to the hierarchy of our group. We don t necessarily have an
appointed leader and each of us brings different skills and perspectives. We came up with the idea for
this campaign through the same strategy behind conscious raising groups. As a group we discussed
issues that affected us and that we felt passionate about to find common ground and

  • 2. Don Crow Laws Segregation Laws And Using Music As An Civil... Throughout the late 19th century, African Americans did not have the same rights as white people, which led towards the establishment of Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws segregated blacks from whites in a political, educational, and social setting, which created unfair treatment towards people of color. In Devil in the Grove, four African American boys, known as the Groveland Boys, were falsely accused of raping a white woman in Florida, which was known as the Groveland case. Thurgood Marshall, who was a part of The National Association of Advancement for Colored People (NAACP), helped to solve the Groveland case, as he was an advocate in fighting against Jim Crow segregation. The labor force, vigilante groups, and legal precedents led towards the establishment of Jim Crow policies by segregating black people from white people in public areas. African Americans contested these policies by creating legal organizations that overturned cases supporting segregation laws and using music as a way to protest against the Jim Crow policies. In the labor force, there was pressure and unfair treatment towards African Americans, which was a foundational element in establishing Jim Crow laws. Gilbert King wrote, McCarthy learned that whites in Groveland (who accounted for about 60 percent of the town s population of one thousand) were tolerant of blacks, as long as they continued to work in white owned citrus groves. • 3. Compare And Contrast The Lottery And The Most Dangerous Game The Lottery vs. The Most Dangerous Game ENGL 102: Literature and Composition Summer B 2017 Mandy Greer L26834967 APA Outline I. Thesis a. The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell shed light upon the human nature and its indifference to suffering until they become the suffer. The stories tell realistically what happens when a society decides to become the jury and judge on the value of human life. Both stories have haunting comparisons that deal with immorality. They give similarities for what is considered acceptable and everyday life in the characters society. The authors use vivid and detailed points of view to give the stories reality roots. These two stories are more unique with the differences being about man versus man in the survival for human life and the other a woman against her whole village s belief. The Most Dangerous Game has the character Rainsford speaking about the animals he hunts. The dreary feel of the crew and the murk of the night add suspense to what is held beyond the fog. The conversation between Rainsford and The General Zaroff is a precursor for an intriguing climax. The Lottery begins its story with a simple town setting and villagers coming together for a lottery. It picks up momentum once you realize what is actually at stake in this lottery. The lottery consists of a ritualistic killing to preserve fruitfulness of the village. Every year there is the ritual of the choosing and the stoning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Case Of Young Sandy In the case of young Sandy there are many things that need to be taken into consideration when planning on how to deal with his case. There are many factors that need to be understood about his case and these factors need to be dealt with on in depth level to truly understand what will be the best course of action for his future treatment, whether that will be going to a young offenders institution or other forms of rehabilitation. From a young age Sandy never had a stable childhood, coming from a deprived area of the city, which had high levels of crime and low levels of employed citizens in the area. As expected in such areas of a city, living there can cause a negative up bringing for any child that lives there and Sandy is no exception to this. To start off with Sandy s Father was never around when he was younger, as he was constantly in and out of prison as his son was growing up. This meant that Sandy never had a positive male role model growing up as he lived with his grandmother. Looking into Sutherland, Parson and Cohen s sex role theory (Sutherland (1947), Parson (1937) and Cohen (1955, cited in Walklate, 2007, pg 91 93)) you could explain that as a result of Sandy having no masculine role model in his life and only have a female role model. Which would only give him a tender and gentle influence in his life and he would ve felt conflicted in his upbringing and would assume an attitude opposite to that of his female role model and would become masculine by ... • 5. Meaning Of Geography Vs Geography History rhymes, but geography endures. was once stated by Andrew C. Katen. History, in fact, does not repeat itself. However, it does seem to have recurring events. With geography, on the other hand, the learning possibilities are endless. As people continually change, it causes the environment around us to change, which makes geography an ongoing happening. For example, the population is always increasing and decreasing because of the number of births and deaths. So therefore, more and more space is being taken up to provide living space for the large amount of humans on Earth. Geography deals with not only maps, compasses, and landforms, but with people of different cultures and how they interact with the space around them. Many geographers feel that geography is how people adapt their environment to fit their culture (and vice versa), while other geographers feel as though geography is about how different factors make the earth diverse and how things are laid out based on the diversity of the earth. According to some geographers, the definition of geography is how people adapt, or change, their environment to fit their culture. In document one, it states, ...Geography emphasizes people, their ways of life, their divisions, and their endeavors to solve their problems and to adapt the regional environmental conditions to their ways and means... This basically is saying that people change the environment around them so that it is able to go together with their goals, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Examples Of Discourse Analysis Essay 2.0 Critical Discourse Analysis There has been much written in recent years about CDA in its broadest sense. It appears to be quite difficult to define in simple terms and this is probably due to the nature of CDA. It encompasses a number of general tenets and uses a large range of techniques. It aims primarily to identify socio political inequalities that exist in society. Fairclough (1995b) provides us with a useful definition that encapsulates most other definitions of CDA: [CDA is the study of] often opaque relationships of causality and determination between (a) discursive practices, events and texts, and (b) wider social and cultural structures, relations and processes; to investigate how such practices, events and texts arise out of ... So will it be a boy or a girl? Will you go for brown hair or blonde? How about a redhead? Would you prefer a taller child? Intelligent and good with his hands? Do you want them to be a slender book worm or a muscular athlete? The sky is the limit! My friends what you have just witnessed could be a very real introduction given by a genetic counsellor or a baby designer company to their clients in the not so distant future. The term designer babies was popularized in 2000 by Glenn McGee in his book A Perfect Baby: A Pragmatic Approach to Genetics . Since the able to afford this practice are of the elite class, thus their customized babies would have have superior advantage over people like me and you from the second they are born because not only do they belong to a wealthy family, but they also are designed to be more mentally and physically fit . I am not alone in this belief, Silver Lee in his book Remaking Eden describes the destructive effects a class structure of genetic haves and have nots could have. To Kill a Mockingbird is about a family living in a fictional town called Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. The family consisted of a father, Atticus Finch, a brother, Jem Finch, and a sister, Jean Louise (Scout) Finch. At this time, racial discrimination existed and caused tension everywhere. Although, without racial discrimination readers wouldn t be introduced to a shy character named Arthur (Boo) Radley. Boo Radley was a young man who stayed within the confinement of his home. She thinks that her father is of very old age, but in reality he is not. For instance, Atticus was feeble: he was nearly fifty (Lee, 118). Additionally, Harper Lee told the book from Scout s point of view to show a child s perspective, but perhaps Miss Maudie s narration of the play was of greater importance to the audience. Changing the narration of the story helps the audience understand, but changing the opening scenes helps them follow the story. Another difference between the book and the play is that the book opens with Jem breaking his arm, while the play opens with Its a sin to kill a mockingbird. The author, Harper Lee, wanted to symbolize the meaning of the mockingbird in the story. In addition, mockingbirds don t harm humans in anyway. Mockingbirds simply sing for everyone to enjoy with pleasure. Lee writes That s why it s a sin to kill a mockingbird (119). In the play, they started with It s a sin to kill a mockingbird to emphasize the importance of the saying throughout the story. It was started as the online platform to be connected for ivy league university students and later extended to general public. It has a market worth of $ 148 billion in 2014 and has more than 1 billion subscribers online. The case illustrates about the exploitation of user data by Facebook to generate revenue. The user data is used to deliver to highest bidder and earn revenue. 1. Facebook is collecting the extensive personal information from its users. The information is in the form of personal details, pictures and life events. The reason for turning the information into big databases is to serve relevant advertising that suits the taste of a particular person. • 19. It does show that lower level of inflation will be achieved by delegating monetary policy to a conservative and independent central bank. But if the central banker and the government has the same inflation aversion, (ε=0) the independence does not matter and in the same way, if the central bank is fully controlled by the government, (ϒ=0) the conservativeness does not matter, unless it is the optimal combination of ϒ and ε. However, McCallum (1995) criticised this solution of reducing inflation bias. I chose this topic because I knew I would learn a lot from it and that it would help me in my future. I wanted to learn how to write great lyrics for my songs and make melodies so that I may perform them to an audience. I had to research the different ways of writing lyrics, how to come up with a title for your song, how to make a melody, and how to apply chords to that melody. I have learned an easy way to make songs of your own so that they seem professional but anybody could do it. This is the basics of Songcraft. In songcraft, the first thing that you must think of should be the lyrics to your song. You may not have to use lyrics in your song which does not change anything but most modern music these days have lyrics to express the mood of the song more. If you want lyrics in your song or songs then the first step is to brainstorm. Choose a topic that you want your song to cover and let your imagination run wild. Never hesitate in writing down the first words that come to mind if you do then that is your first mistake. Lyrics aren t what somebody has just chosen from a book or poem they are applied in the way that the artist imagines them not how she/he wants them to sound. When I say this I do not mean that they never fix their lyrics but that they know there meaning in the song from the lyrics even if the lyrics do not make sense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Literary Devices In Those Winter Sundays Relationships between children and their parents can be complex. Often, once the child grows up, they begin to have a greater understanding and are able to reflect on those relationships. In the poem, Those Winter Sundays, Robert Hayden writes of a son looking back on his relationship with his father and it s complexity. Their intricate relationship comes from the son feeling guilt about how unaware he was of everything his father did and how blinded he was by his childish judgments. Using details to look back on childhood, sound devices to show a masked feeling and repetition of the word cold to elaborate on the emotional distance the father shows, the speaker portrays his seemingly strict, yet caring father and an unknowing and indifferent ... This begins with the first cold (Hayden 2) depicting a father constantly trying to do what s right for his family and having to deal with a son who s unappreciative and constantly giving him the cold shoulder because he can only see what shows up before him, unable to see past the wall of ice. In the second stanza the word cold is compiled with onomatopoeia so the reader can almost hear the sound of coldness, hear the cold splintering, breaking (Hayden 6). This signifies the son chipping away at the ice before him and seeing past his father s rough exterior to every small sacrifice he has done for his family. To end everything the use of the word cold (Hayden 11) symbolizes him breaking through and driving out every piece of hostile ice blocking the view of his true father. Once removed, he saw a man who worked hard every single day did everything he knew how to for his family and his son. Reflecting, he asks What did I know, what did I know / of love s austere and lonely offices (Hayden 14)? Love was a part of everything his father did and worked for. As a child, he only saw the side of his father that struggled to show his love through typical words and expressions leaving him heavy with guilt. He is now unable to thank his father for everything because what did he know of the love of a father to his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Using Quantitative Pcr For Hiv Viral Load Control Results An HIV GWAS SNP marks expression of a long non coding RNA (lncRNA). Human chromosome 3p21 22 harbors a cluster of chemokine receptor genes, several of which serve as major or minor co receptors of HIV 1 [1]. The genetic associations of CCR5 and CCR2 gene polymorphisms with HIV 1 pathogenesis are well known [2 5], but any potential role of variation in other regions of the cluster is largely unknown. An intergenic SNP (rs1015164 A/G) downstream of the CCRL2 gene was shown to associate with HIV viral load control [6] and progression to AIDS [7] in two independent cohorts of HIV infected patients. Importantly, the SNP showed genome wide significant association with HIV outcomes in meta analyses that collectively examined genotyping data from 6,315 HIV infected patients [8]. The SNP is in close genomic proximity to a non coding RNA gene RP 11 24F11.2 (Fig. S1). We were able to detect and quantify the polyadenylated lncRNA transcript in the total RNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) using quantitative PCR (qPCR). Specificity of the primers was confirmed by sequencing of the amplicons. We designated this lncRNA as Lnc11.2. The rs1015164A allele, which associated with higher viral loads (OR=1.4, p=3.3 ×10 5) [6] and more rapid disease progression (HR=1.4, p=8.6 ×10 6) [7] correlated with higher expression levels of Lnc11.2 in PBLs (Fig. 1). He takes a chicken once in a while, but I won t let the men harm him. In a new country a body feels friendly to the animals. When she says In a new country a body feels friends to the animals she is actually relating to Jim. Since Jim is in a new area that he has never been to, a body (animal or human) can be somewhat comforting to have around. Another example is when Cather writes, It s no better than a badger hole; no proper dugout at all. the symbol she uses is a badgers hole. She says this because Peter Krajiek tricks the bohemian family because he is the only interpreter and the Bohemians didn t speak enough english to ask for advice before buying his cave of a house. She uses this symbol to describe how awful of a place the Bohemian family is staying in. Lastly Cather uses the symbol of grass to describe the characters point of view and her point of view when looking at the earth. The story conveys the message that loss of innocence is an inevitable and vital part of the transition from adolescence to adulthood. At the beginning of the story, Leila s attitude towards the ball is one of exuberance as she has ever experienced anything like it before. Mansfield uses language features such as similes, personification and metaphors to emphasize Leila s breathless excitement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The text starts off with a giddy tone that accentuates Leila s excitement for the ball Exactly when the ball began Leila would have found it hard to say. this gives a sense that Leila has lost track of reality, from being whisked away by the glamour and grandiose of the ball when she first enters the hall. Around the middle of the text the tone transitions from giddy and cheerful to a more depressing tone when Leila encounters the fat man. This is shown by the quote It hardly bears thinking about, does it? said the fat man gloomily. Leila looked at his bald head, and she felt quite sorry for him. Which shows us the change in tone when Leila meets the fat man. Leila s time with the fat men is characterised by her being pulled away from the fantasy of the ball and back to reality as she gets shocked by the fat man s realist/pessimist view. After Leila s encounter with the fat man ends the tone of the text changes back to cheerful and exuberant with the quote The lights, the azaleas, the dresses, the pink faces, the velvet chairs, all became one beautiful flying wheel. this shows us that immediately after the fat man leaves the ball goes back to normal and Leila forgets him and carries on with her youthful fantasy version of the ball. The changes in the tone of the text shows how adolescents live in the moment and tend to easily pass things ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was here that he took the ideas of unions and spoke to leaders to expand the systems and strategies to help organise disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods nationwide (Stall Stoecker, 1998). From here he generated many community movements, published two books, produced multiple powerful organisations and influenced an entire generation of organisers (Stall Stoecker, 1998). Feminist organising however, is not associated with any particular person or social movement (Stall Stoecker, 1998). This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A major element of feminist organising is that the issue is local and personal. This is very applicable to our group. Each of the four female members of the group have experienced rape culture to different extents, and the one male of the group can relate to this through his own experience and relationships with the women in his life. It also applies to the hierarchy of our group. We don t necessarily have an appointed leader and each of us brings different skills and perspectives. We came up with the idea for this campaign through the same strategy behind conscious raising groups. As a group we discussed issues that affected us and that we felt passionate about to find common ground and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
