A Lecture Hall Is Filled At The Brim With College Students
Imagine this scenario: a lecture hall is filled to the brim with college students, more than half of the
students are either daydreaming about the upcoming weekend or texting on their phones. Their
professor stands in the front of the hall trying to give his prepared lecture, but the majority of his
students are not paying attention. What shall the professor do to motivate his students to pay attention
in class? He announces to them that if they can fully engage themselves in his lecture for the rest of
the class time, he will give them each five dollars. The students are suddenly all ears, pens ready to
take notes, eyes glued to the front of the room, in hopes of receiving the professor s incentive. Does
this seem like a harmless scenario for a desperate professor to motivate his students? While there are
possibly individuals who would agree that the scenario is not invoking any harm on the students, there
are others who would argue that paying students to try in school takes away their motivation to
actually learn. Among the latter stands Alfie Kohn, author or Punished By Rewards: The Trouble with
Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A s, Praise, and Other Bribes, who would be appalled by the professor s
actions. Kohn s book challenges the common phenomenon of using rewards in everyday life in
dealing with others. With examples pulled from schools, the workplace, and even households, he
demonstrates to his audience that rewards have become means of controlling one another than as

Coach Carter Hero
When thinking of a hero, the first idea that comes to mind is a person that receives admiration due to
the acts in which they perform. With that said, a person that I personally admire is Ken Carter. Ken
Carter was a basketball player who excelled at the collegiate level. He used the experience he gained
to become a head basketball coach at Richmond High School, a rough inner city school filled with
below average students. Coach Carter accepted the job hoping to change this disturbing trend of
grades. He turned a disappointing team of young men into superb athletes, but more importantly better
students with the use of his strict coaching technique. I see Coach Carter as a hero due to his
helpfulness, bravery, and love for others.

Living in the city of Richmond, Carter and his players were exposed to drugs, alcohol, and gang
violence. Many of the players on the team were a part of these gangs. One particular player, Timo
Cruz, was in a gang and unable to get out of it. Timo caused much disruption at practice and had a
problem with instigating fights. While Carter disapproved of this behavior, he knew that if he kicked
Cruz off the team that the young man s life would continue to spiral downward. Keeping this in mind,
Coach Carter allowed Cruz to stay on the team; however, he continually talked to him about leaving
the gang life. Carter s true love was seen when Cruz s cousin who was in the gang with him was shot
during a drug deal. Cruz arrived at Carter s house in the middle of the night with blood on his hands
asking for help. Rather than leaving the distraught Cruz out in the streets, Coach Carter took him into
his house and was able to remove him from the gang life. Later on, Coach Carter helped Cruz play
basketball in college, an achievement nobody ever thought would be a part of Timo Cruz s life. Many
of these young men s lives were saved by the love that Coach Carter showed for them. I greatly
admire Ken Carter for his love for others, a true mark of a

Short Essay On Jimmy Hoffa
Jimmy Hoffa was a character of a man, and a smart one at that. A pioneer in the labor union
community, Hoffa controversially climbed up the Teamsters union chain of command. On his way up
though, Hoffa made many enemies in the business of organized crime. His aggressively sly behavior
earned him as much respect as it did threats, and his work made him more successful than he could
have ever imagined. In all of his glory, Hoffa vanished like it did. There is no doubt that Hoffa is gone,
but the question is, was it by choice or by murder?
James Riddle Hoffa was born on february 14th, 1913 in Brazil, Indiana. He dropped out of school at a
young age to work and help support his family. Working for a local loading dock in Detroit, hoffa got
to see poor labor conditions first hand. He organized his first strike shortly after. Using fresh
strawberries as a bargaining tool, he landed better contracts for the other workers and himself. In the
1930s after joining the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Hoffa became a labor organizer for the
teamsters union. He also married Josephine Poszywak in 1936, with whom he had two children. ...

Fighting aggressively for larger union membership and to work out more promising contracts for the
union members was very important to Hoffa. He later became vice president of the union in 1952,
after climbing the organized crime ladder. After becoming president of the union in 1957, he went to
jail for fraud, jury tampering, and conspiracy in 1967. For three years, Hoffa continuously tried to
appeal his many convictions but was unsuccessful. In 1971, president Richard Nixon commuted his
sentence, but banned Hoffa from holding a leadership position in the teamsters union for nine years.
He fought against the ban in court, and off the record, to try and get his power back within the

Essay on Breaking Down the Barriers to Feminist Art Work
Breaking Down the Barriers to Feminist Art Work
Every time a girl reads a womanless history she learns she is worth less.
While studying art history in Pre Industrial Visual Cultures this semester, one theme has become
painfully obvious. There are few if any women artists included in the study of art history. If you dig
deep into the books you can find mention of many unknown, unrecognized and often times very
talented women artists from the past. Women in history are simply not recognized, and this is due to a
large extent to their exclusion from the art world. My paper chooses to focus on a few female artists of
the sixties and seventies who sought to make up for past history and ensure women were known.
These women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her most famous piece is entitled ìThe Dinner Partyî and in this she sets a large table with 39 place
settings for women from the past. Along with this there are hundreds of other names and these include
past women artists including Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt. The purpose of this piece was to
show how many women from history are unrecognized and forgotten. These women have made
lasting and powerful contributions to our society and yet they are essentially left out of history and
overshadowed by their male counterparts. This was especially true in art history, and Chicago
attempted to show how important it was that females have a place in history. Therefore the exclusion
of women from history, had a profound impact on Chicago and greatly impacted her art making.
The Dinner Partyî utilizes female sexual imagery to further establish a female presence in the work.
The plates for ìThe Dinner Partyî clearly depict vaginal imagery. Chicago termed this imagery central
core imagery and she attempted to invent a new female language. Chicago in an interview with Lucy
Lippard says that, ìif women make art differently from men, it means that women are actually
independent from menî (Lippard, 228). Her work was trying to eradicate the negative stereotypes
people had about females and establish the importance of women both in the past and present. This
work sought to repair some of the damage suffered from the exclusion

Petruchio And Katherine Manipulation
The continuing sources put forth the manipulation, the mental illness and further develops the idea of
the sexual tension between Petruchio and Katherine and the enduring transformation of Katherine.
Katherine drifts apart from the mannerisms of a feminist and contradicts her recurring attitudes of a
feminist. Katherine is a character affected by the expectations of women in the time and setting of
Verona Italy where the play is taking place. In the time period of the play, there are not only the
manipulation of Katherine and Petruchio occurring but the development of the different puzzle pieces
of bipolar disorder. The first piece of the puzzle is Petruchio meeting Katherine for the first time.

Evolution And Adaptive Value Of Brood Parasitism Within...
The Evolution and Adaptive Value of Brood Parasitism within Cuckoo Birds.
Abstract
Brood parasitism is a unique behavior performed by some species that tricks another host species into
raising its young. This is a fairly common behavior among the Cuculidae family of which 53 of the
136 species perform brood parasitism. My question and what I hope to review within this paper is,
what has caused brood parasitism, what has shaped it, and what are the adaptive values of Cuckoo
brood parasitism? Within Cuckoo s, this strange behavior has ultimately been shaped through
environmental pressures and has become advantageous. Ecological changes forced Cuckoo s to
change migrational patterns, habitat, range size, and foraging, which lead to brood parasitism. Once
brood parasitism arose, a coevolutionary arms race began between the Cuckoo s and hosts. Due to
parasitic egg rejections, Cuckoo eggs that closely resembled host eggs were selected for, leading to
higher success rates of the behavior. This gives Cuckoo s many advantageous , as there is no longer a
need for investing time and energy into raising their young. Brood parasitism also gives Cuckoo s the
advantage of exploiting diverse breeding habitats; reduced diet restraints, and foraging. Ultimately this
behavior provides many benefits to Cuckoos and allows them successfully raise young while
providing no parental care.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, by Robert Frost Essay
Robert Frost uses metaphor and symbolism extensively in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening ,
developing deeper and more complex meanings from a superficially simple poem. Frost s own
analysis contributes greatly to our appreciation of the importance of metaphor, claiming that metaphor
[is] the whole of thinking, inviting the reader to interpret the beautiful scene in a more profound way.
However, the multitude of possible interpretations sees it being read as either carefully crafted lyric, a
suicide poem, [or] as recording a single autobiographical incident . Judith Oster argues, therefore, that
the social conditions individual to each reader tangibly alter our understanding of metaphor. Despite
the simplicity of language, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The issues that Frost explores are universalised by metaphor, with allusions to literary traditions such
as in Hamlet s soliloquy, where the nature of life is explored. These conflicts between our duties and
the promise of sleep are pre eminently relevant to both the personal dilemma faced by the traveller but
also to the reader, who is no closer to determining whether the final conclusion made is one of suicide
and rest or whether the promises outweigh the traveller s intemperance with the woods. As the poem
becomes increasingly complex, the conventional metaphor of falling snow contributes layer upon
layer of meaning. The downy flake transcends its literal sense, becoming a blanket that both obscures
and numbs the senses, hiding the dangers whilst tempting the traveller to stop. The coldness and
darkness of the setting contrasts the purity of snow with the shadowy, even sinister idea that nature is
enticing us with eternal rest. Frost s allusions to the poem, Keen fitful gusts with the line and miles to

The Blind Side By John Lee Hancock
On the surface, The Blind Side may seem like a great feel good movie, but once the movie is
analyzed, it s apparent that the movie is filled with blatant stereotypes as well as racism. The Blind
Side, based off of a true story, shows the protagonist escaping poverty against all odds and growing up
to be very successful with the help of a select few. Although some may argue that escaping poverty
and becoming successful like Michael did is very possible this connotation of escaping poverty
depicted in the movie is highly unrealistic, contributes to derogative stereotypes, and would also be
very unlikely to happen in real life. The Blind Side, a feel good sports drama intended for everyone,
especially young kids and teenagers, was released on November 20th in 2009 and was directed by
John Lee Hancock. The Blind side was very successful in the box office, grossing hundreds of
millions of dollars and quickly became the movie to see of the thanksgiving holiday season. The Blind
Side starred Sandra Bullock, playing the role of an extremely wealthy white woman. Her character,
Mrs. Tuohy, a feisty, passionate and caring Christian woman, took in a homeless African American
kid, Michael Oher. Despite the success of the movie in the box offices, the movie received very mixed
reviews from critics. The mixed opinions of this movie are largely due to the controversial issues the
movie addresses as well as the controversial issues this movie does not address. Many critics thought

Synthesis Of Esters
Esters aromas are very distinct and often pleasant, they are often used in food aroma and fragrances.
Esters chemical properties are distinguished by their low molecular weight and low boiling points,
caused by their dipole dipole and dispersion interactions; additionally, esters cannot form hydrogen
bonds. Esters are the result of a condensation reaction, in which a carboxylic acid, an alcohol, and acid
catalyst creates a water molecule and an ester. In a condensation reaction the carboxylic acid and
alcohol react in a way that causes at least one alkyl or benzene ring group replaces a hydroxyl(OH)
group. Amides like esters can be formed by a condensation reaction involving carboxylic acid, which
reacts with amine, to form an amide and water. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the dried mass of the product the balanced equation of the reaction, between 4 aminophenol and
acetic anhydride can be calculated. The percent yield of said product can then be calculated by divided
the calculated mass by the theoretical mass. Using the characteristics of alcohols and pH, the 4
aminophenol and acetaminophen produced can be tested to categorize which are alcohols and the pH
of each. In the Cerium Test the reaction between [Ce(H2O)6]4+ and HO R(alcohol) will produced
[(H2O)5Ce O R]3+, the (R) group will produce a color change in the product allowing for the
characterization of a reactant as either an alcohol or not. In the Universal Indicator Test adding
universal indicator to an aqueous mixture of any alcohol, amide, or amine will result in a color
change, red for acidic and blue for basic. Then by using the knowledge that alcohols and amides
register as pH neutral and amines register as slightly acidic allows for the characterization of the
reactant as an alcohol or amide, or as an amine. In the last part of the experiment, an alcohol and an
acetic acid will react in an esterification reaction to produce an ester. Using the ester odors in the
known ester banks, the unique aroma of each ester will allow for a categorization of each ester
produced. Lastly, retrosynthetic analysis can be used to

The blocks from Broadway to Green were too steep for electric cars to ascend and descend unaided;
the counterbalance solved the problem. Passengers would transfer from double truck electric cars at
the top of the hill to a single truck car attached to the cable by a plow. When the car reached the
bottom of the hill, it released the plow and ran on to Bay Street. The counterbalance was the only
United Railroads line which directly reached the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition, held at the Marina.
The 19 Polk came within a block of the eastern entrance. URR had all the single truck cars rebuilt as
Pay as You Enter (PAYE) cars with multiple unit (MU) capability. The cars ran as trains during the
Exposition due to the heavy passenger loads. After the URR had become the Market Street Railway,
the line was extended to Marina Boulevard on August 29, 1925. MSRy needed to store a weighted
dummy car at the Turk and Fillmore car house so there would be a counterbalance car for the last run
of the night. A regular 22 Fillmore car towed it out to the top of the hill. The attendant attached it to

How Career Is A Successful Internship
How to Accomplish a Successful Internship
For a college student, internship experience not only broadens one s horizons, but it also enriches one
s resume. For me, an internship is a good way to apply what I ve learned at school to professional
experience. While we students are seeking internship opportunities to qualify ourselves for good job
positions, figuring out what we have obtained from internship experience and preparing for future
internships or jobs is even more important.
The book They Don t Teach Corporate in College gives me instructions of how to follow a successful
career path. While combining my personal internship experience with what I learned from the book, I
have a better understanding of how to prepare, pursue and finally accomplish a successful internship.
To begin with, you need to know about yourself. Figuring out your strengths and weaknesses can help
you find suitable fields and relevant jobs quickly and accurately. I once worked as an assistant for a
financial accountant in the Trade and Finance Department at Bank of China. One of the reasons I got
the internship was because the department desired interns who had good English writing skills. While
I am an international student studying in America, the manager thought I had the skills. Therefore,
knowing about your skills and making the best use of them on your resumes can lead to internship
opportunities.
After knowing about what skills you are good at and what fields you might work in, go online

People are scared that we might die of trying it without testing so we chose animals so we torture

Christmas Day In Japan
You might wonder what other people in the world are doing at this time of the year. Well, this paper
will tell you all about what the Japanese people do during Christmas. You may be surprised at what
they do during this special holiday. In Japan they do celebrate Christmas, but surprisingly celebrating
Christmas is not their number one priority. Although they celebrate Christmas on the same day that we
do they celebrate Christmas eve even more, and they do not celebrate it in a way that would be
common. Many people in Japan think of Christmas eve as a day of peace and love. They celebrate
Christmas eve like it is another valentine s day, and usually go to a fancy restaurant and buy each
other a gift. Another tradition that many Japanese people do on Christmas and Christmas eve is the
Disney Christmas Parade. The Disney Christmas Parade is when they have a parade with many
Disney characters who pass out candy and do some cool tricks. Not only do they celebrate it like a
valentine s day, but they also have many favorite foods. Some of their favorite foods that they have are
KFC and strawberry shortcake. It may sound weird that they eat KFC on Christmas eve and Christmas
day, but it is a tradition around Japan. KFC in Japan was first introduced when a Japanese family
could not find any turkey for Christmas and so they ate fried chicken instead. The KFC manager saw
his opportunity and decide to run a campaign called Kentucky for Christmas . Kentucky for Christmas

The pilot Peter Siebold managed to survive however the co pilot Michael Alsbury died. The primary
reason for this test flight included conducting a 38 second burn to test the new hybrid motor which
used a nylon fuel grain and nitrous oxide to generate thrust, and a feathered reentry that was to be at a
speed of Mach 1.2 (NTSB) The mission for SpaceShipTwo consisted of an air drop from

This callout was to alert the pilot of a transonic bobble would occur as the vehicle accelerated through
the transonic region and became supersonic. The next step was to unlock the feather by moving the
feather lock handle from the locked to unlocked position when SpaceShipTwo reached a speed of
Mach 1.4. (NTSB) The copilot did not heed the instructions of the pilot to unlock the feather. The
cockpit image recorder showed that 0.5 seconds after making the Mach 0.8 callout the copilot started
to unlock the feather at approximately Mach 0.82. Because of this premature movement of the feather
locking system, the large lifting force (keeping the feather extended) generated by the tail,
overpowered the resistance capability of the feather actuators (keeping the feather retracted),
essentially folding the fuselage over the tailboom. The pilot, age 43 held a flight instructor certificate,
commercial pilot certificate, with ratings for airplane single engine and multiengine land, instrument
airplane, and glider. He held FAA authorization to operate the SpaceShipOne, SpaceShipTwo, Proteus
and White Knight Two experimental aircraft as the pilot in command. The pilot held a second class
medical certificate with no limitations. The pilot was hired by Scaled Composites in December 1996
as a design engineer. (NTSB) He had been a test pilot for the SpaceShipOne program. The pilot

Bulimia Nervosa Is An Eating Disorder
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that consists of the distortion on one s body image and an
obsessive desire to lose weight. It involves binge eating which is the rapid ingesting of large amounts
of food, commonly followed by vomiting, fasting, or purging that is accompanied by depression. An
individual with bulimia will attempt to avoid weight gain by vomiting or using laxatives, diuretics, or
enemas. It is common to see a bulimic individual restrict their food intake or exercise excessively. The
collective notion of a bulimic is that their self worth and self evaluation is strongly influenced by their
weight or body shape. This disorder is not only mentally damaging but also takes a physical toll on the

bulimia but do not meet the criteria to be diagnosed. Apart from the common misconception that only
women develop eating disorders, it is reported that 10% of bulimics are males. I personally never gave
any thought to males suffering from an eating disorder. I have always perceived that males with extra
weight are more socially acceptable compared to women that carry extra weight, and that commonly
men don t view their image as defining to their value.
An interesting fact that I did not know is that 50% of individuals with an eating disorder abuse drugs
and alcohol. It s not shocking to me that bulimics would abuse drugs and alcohol, not only because it
can be used as an escape from the world and themselves, but also because numerous drugs and alcohol
effect appetite, usually in a negative way, aiding to weight loss. This disorder really is a never ending
cycle. First the body distortion image develops, then the binge eating occurs, followed by guilt that
leads to purging, vomiting, etc., which turns into depression that is commonly coped with through
drugs, alcohol, or food, which in turn starts the cycle over again.
Like most disorders, having a good family and friend support group is important to overcoming or
coping with bulimia. This became evident in this case study based off the fact that Amber felt unable

Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a dissolution story full of loss, loneliness and isolation. It
is an extremely intricate, thick and detailed book. Tender is the Night is a book about the adult life of a
charismatic and personable psychiatrist named Dick Diver and his marriage to his wife Nicole Diver
who is also his patient. He meets a young hollywood actress, named Rosemary Hoyt, one summer and
has an affair with her. This affair begins his slow decline to his downfall and eventual loss of his
reputation, career and family. For its many themes and strong dynamic characters, I have found Tender
is the Night to be a good, satisfying book to read. The main theme conveyed throughout this novel is
that although love brings happiness at times, love is destructive.
Fitzgerald s principle idea he wants to convey is that life is unpredictable, your hopes, dreams, and
plans can change in a second and love is the main reason. Fitzgerald aims to show, that these changes
are not for the better. Fitzgerald presents this ideal through Dick Diver. Dick Diver s goal is to become
a world renowned psychiatrist. That all changes the day he meets Nicole. He gives it all up for love,
devoting his life to take care of her. After 6 years or so, Dick meets Rosemary and falls in love with

Conflict, Power, and Influence in Interpersonal Communication
Conflict management deals with many levels of communications. Power and influence play a key role
in how conflict is resolved in situations involving conflict. The film Lean On Me was first and
foremost about transformation on several different levels. At first glance the tactics of Crazy Joe Clark
seem harsh and arbitrary. It helps to understand that Joe Clark in real life was a sergeant in the Army

Jesus Legacy
Life to Legacy of Jesus
Jesus, born from a virgin astonished people with his understanding at a young age. He would go on to
perform miracles and disciple the word of God through adulthood. Then would leave a legacy that
would affect the world for thousands of years, providing a set of teachings entire countries would live
by. Jesus defined society through miracles, his knowledge and teachings.
Before Jesus was born, he was a miracle Mary was a virgin when jesus was conceived and that she
was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit (Jesus). By Mary knowing that she was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, this reinsured their faith and put the on the right path on how to raise Jesus so he could
then later start his ministry. As a young child, around 12, Jesus parents lost him. They found him in the
Temple. Jesus parents found him in the temple, asking questions and having discussions with them.

Introduction This paper is an integrated critique of Richard Dawkins , The Selfish Gene, and Jonathan
Kozol s, Savage Inequalities. The premise of my critique is to compare how these two books by two
different authors on two different subjects can relate. I believe this is done by exampling how
Dawkins describes the general make up of individuals and how they interact in their specific groups
that they as a species have come up in over millennia and how Kozol describes that where you are
born and raised has predetermined the path that you will be forced down in a cultural and more

sensitive readers would see the resilient and transcendent qualities of children and some mothers in the

Architectural professional practice is a relatively regional field in which architects conduct their

American architects practice in China, it is not an easy time for them to interact or communicate with

the source of misunderstanding and problems in the process of cooperation, which may lead to
unfavorable consequences. As a Chinese architectural student who has studied in America and worked

Taking a Look at Hinduism
Many religions offer an exact path to the afterlife; illuminated by various rules and regulations that
one must follow to reach enlightenment. Hinduism, on the other hand, is much more complex,
offering multiple ways to achieve moksha and providing many answers to the ancient question of what
happens after we die? Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu concept
of God is much broader than that. In fact, Hinduism itself encompasses much more than just one
specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with certain
identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading being that
extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see the concept of
God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many, God and the soul, God
as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of Hinduism s most distinguishing
features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are manifestations of the various powers
of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is both one and many. Because this concept
carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being, everything can be seen as being God s form. Hindus
worship many Gods, but they also believe that the divine is singular or one. These Gods are
representations of different aspects of the overall God. Although their worship of multiple

My Brother The Unabomber By Ed Pilkington And Montana 1948...
In My Brother the Unabomber by Ed Pilkington and Montana 1948 by Larry Watson, the authors have
a similar viewpoint on the importance of justice in a society. They show these similarities through the
motivations of David and the members of the Hayden family. David Kaczynski and Wes have parallel
viewpoints on adherence to the principled administration of the law. David has lived the typical life of
most civilians until he learns that his brother Ted is the infamous Unabomber. He is interviewed by
Pilkington and describes his experience of unfolding the grim truth. Pilkington describes David
Kaczynski s initial thoughts after revealing Ted to law enforcement: Kaczynski confessed to his

[He] won t. By God [he] won t (Watson 143). Wes s role in the justice system suddenly strikes him as
he recognizes that burying the truth only encourages falsehood to build. This awareness provokes
forceful emotions to course through Wes s mind as he expresses frustration with a violent fist. At first,
Wes criticizes himself for thinking he could offer mercy to a convict. It becomes apparent to him that
lawbreakers invariably deserve some form of punishment for their wrongdoings. He shakes his head at
the bias of the the corrupt jury which would cut [Frank] loose simply because of his infallible
reputation. Nonetheless, Wes swears to God that he will penalize his brother despite the county s
majority point of view. Obeying and prosecuting the rules should be prioritized over one s image. The
fact that the criminal is his own brother fails to persuade his mindset. A lawbreaker will be a
lawbreaker regardless of his or her assumed character. Wes is prepared to take the first initiative and
perhaps stir up trouble in the community in order to do what is morally right. Both pieces of literature
strongly convey the message that one must defend the law. David voluntarily exposes Ted to the FBI
knowing he is jeopardizing his brother s life while Wes concludes that Frank is not entitled to mercy
and should serve time in jail. These men are in similar scenarios, for they are conflicted by the choice
between family or justice. Nonetheless, they feel the

The Strong Sense Of Totalitarianism In George Orwell s 1984
Nothing unmasks a man like his use of power Elbert Hubbard. When power goes too far, you get to
see what people are really like. George Orwell s 1984 demonstrates a strong sense of totalitarianism in
a society called Oceania . The leader of Oceania is the Inner Party, or the Party for short. The Party is
a group of elites who use a symbolic figure they call Big Brother to control the middle and lower
classes. They use the Thought Police, which is a government group of unknown individuals that aim
to suppress these lower classes and their individuality. This helps to accomplish the Party s goal of
complete control. In a world with manipulation and surveillance, it is inevitable that government
corruption exists. Big Brother uses brainwashing as a way of manipulating children. When the Parsons
children strike Winston, he thinks to himself, that wretched women must lead a life of terror. Another
year...they would be watching her day and night for symptoms of unorthodoxy...all children nowadays
were horrible...they were systematically turned into ungovernable little savages (Orwell 24). With this
method of manipulation, the children feel that they should be more loyal to Big Brother than to their
own families. The children attend the Party s youth organization called the Junior Spies, where they
teach the kids to spy on their parents and to report them to the Thought Police if they are not following
the rules. This is effective because the parents would feel like their children will be merciful, but in
reality, the children will betray them and expose their wrongdoings. This breaks contemporary
American norms by allowing the government to control the parents through the children. If the parents
get caught by their kids, they can get vaporized , and the children would feel like they are fulfilling
their duty to Big Brother, rather than thinking they are committing disloyalty to their families. The
childhood brainwashing establishes emotional discipline in adulthood. However, this means the adults
are never able to show their true emotions. When Winston talks to O Brien after the Thought Police
captured him, O Brien states that, the old civilizations claimed they were founded on love and

Hamlet Theme Of Revenge Essay
The play Hamlet by William Shakespeare follows Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, following the death
of his father. Just months after his sudden death, his uncle Claudius has taken the throne that once
belonged to his father and has married Hamlet s mother, Gertrude. It is when Hamlet meets his father s
ghost one night and discovers that his father was murdered by Claudius that he begins to take part in
the main theme of the play: revenge. In order for there to be revenge, the act of punishing someone
who has done something wrong in one s eyes, three things are needed: a motive, the expression that he
wants revenge, and the carrying out of the act. If each aspect is successfully fulfilled, then there is a
theme of revenge. The first thing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This establishes Hamlet s relationship with his father because he is taking his time to deal with his
father s death because it is hard for him, showing that they had a strong relationship with one another,
contrast to his mother who has remarried just months after. When he meets his father s ghost he is
told: Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchid, A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark Is by
a forged process of my death Rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth, The serpent that did sting
thy father s life Now wears his crown. (1.5.32 40) where his father explains that he was not bitten by a
poisonous snake, like Hamlet was told was the cause of his death, but was instead murdered by
whomever wear his crown (1.5.32), which is Hamlet s uncle, Claudius. It is Hamlet s relationship with
his father, someone whom he loved dearly, and his reaction to his death, causing it to be hard for him,
that shows that he would have reason to want revenge on whomever killed him for participating in the
most terrible act anyone can: murder. What makes revenge different from simply getting angry and
getting back at someone is that they have to express a want for revenge prior to carrying out the act.
This would require Hamlet to display his craving for revenge following his discovery that his father
was murdered, giving him time

Government Duty Research Paper
In America, there are five duties required of every citizen. They are obeying the law, paying taxes,
attending school, serving in court, and defending the nation. While defending the nation and serving in
court are important, obeying the law, paying taxes, and attending school are more important as they
make sure that there is even a nation worth defending. Citizens obeying the law is vital to a country s
survival. If a country s citizens didn t obey the same set of laws, then the country would quickly
unravel. Every person in a country adhering to their own set of laws would lead to increased danger
and ability for discrimination. For example, if the speed limit on a highway is 75 mph in a country
where everyone obeys the law, car accidents would be few and far between but in a country where
people don t care about the law, car accidents would happen significantly more due to people going
whatever speed they pleased. Likewise, if a law states that you can t discriminate based on gender,
then in a country where everyone follows the law, there would be no issues, while a country ... Show

Mina Harker From Dracula
For centuries, women in England and the Americans were seen as objects. Women were looked at as
the weaker sex and as inferior (less than) to men. Men have always been perceived as the stronger sex,
having the superiority and power over women. Traditionally, men were the authoritarians and the
heads of the household. However, the roles for women have changed in both America and England. As
time progresses, women have gain control of their rights and attained some gender equality in society
such as working outside their homes and having an education. One way of examining this change is in
Gothic fiction by looking at how women have evolved themselves from the patriarchal culture.

High School Dropout Research
Growing Trends in High School Drop outs
One of the major concerns of education is the rate of students who are dropping out of school.
Statistically, the dropout rate has decreased from a national average of 15 percent in 1972 to 10
percent in 2003, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which rated 16 24 year olds
(Child Trend, 2003). Though, there has been signs of a decrease, drop out rates continue to be a
concern to the public because of the potential consequences and financial costs to the government. On
the academic level, many schools are incapable of handling the new faces in the education realm.
Thus, it forces many students to leave school without a diploma. The drop out rates appears to be an ...

A concern of the statistical data of high school dropouts is the disparaging number of minority
students who drop out of high school in comparison to whites and Asians. A 1993 research by John
Hopkins University flagged 2,000 high schools across the country as potential dropout factories
because 40 percent or more of their freshmen fail to make it to 12th grade on time (Viadero, 2004).
These schools are in medium and bigger size cities and have a significant black and Latino student
population. Florida is the one exception, where many of the failing students are rural white. In 2003, it
was estimated that 6 percent of whites, in comparison to 12 percent of blacks had dropped out of
school (Child Trend, 2003). The primary reason appears that these school districts have a variety of
disadvantages, such as resources and money to improve schools and programs. These schools are
located in lower socio economic communities. However, these disadvantaged students are judged on
the same achievement standards as students who live in higher economic districts with better
resources and tools. Latin Americans constitute the highest percentage of high school dropouts. 24
percent of Latin Americans dropped out of school in 2003 (Child Trends, 2003). This is a significant
number because there are just as many Latin Americans dropping out of school as whites. Yet, Latin
Americans represent slightly above 15 percent of the population. The

Making the Roman Empire War Machine
The Roman Empire was the largest of its time, consisting of almost the entire known world. The force
behind the empire which allowed its growth was its army. The Roman army was an organized and
well oiled machine. The Roman army was ingeniously designed such that is was superior to all the
foes it faced. The Romans had such a successful military, that most modern armies still model after it,
you have but to look at the United States Marines to see how much influence the Romans had on war.
The first important part of the Roman army was the way its legions were organized. Rome had a
number of legions. Each legion consisted of six thousand men. These were divided into ten cohorts of
six hundred men each. These cohorts were then subdivided into three maniples of two hundred men
each, which were split up into centuries of one hundred men each. This structure of the armies allowed
all of the armies to function well despite being far away. Also, the consistent command structure
allowed for the easy change of command that was necessary given the casualties of war, as each new
general didn t have to become familiar with the armies organization. As to the soldiers themselves, the
Romans have a variety of them. Firstly were the different types of infantry in the army. The first

Advantages Of Principle Component Analysis
3.4. Principle Component Analysis (PCA)
Principle component analysis, also referred to as eigenvector transformation, Hotelling transformation
and Karhunen Loeve transformation in remote sensing, is a multivariate technique [66] that is used to
decrease dataset dimensionality. In this technique, the original remote sensing dataset, which is a
correlated variable, is distorted into a simpler dataset for analysis. This permits the dataset to be
uncorrelated variables representing the most significant information from the novel [21]. The
computation of the variance covariance matrix (C) of multiband images is expressed as: Where M and
X are the multiband image mean and individual pixel value vectors respectively, and n is the number
of pixels.
In change detection, there are two ways to relate PCA. The first method is counting two image dates
to a single file, and the second methods is subtracting the second image date from the corresponding
image of the first date after performing PCA individually. The disadvantages of PCA can ... Show

For example, Baronti, Carla [39] concerned PCA to examine the changes occurring in multi temporal
polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. They used association instead of a covariance
matrix in the transformation to condense gain variations that are introduced by the imaging system and
that provide weight to each polarization. In another example, Liu, Nishiyama [49] evaluated four
techniques, including image differencing, image ratioing, image regression and PCA, from a
mathematical perspective. They distinguished that standardized PCA achieved the greatest
performance for change detection. Standardized PCA is better than unstandardized PCA for change
detection because, if the images subjected to PCA are not calculated in the same scale, the correlation
matrix normalizes the data onto the same scale

Leadership And The Life Cycle Of A Group . A Group Is A
Leadership and the Life Cycle of a Group
A group is a living thing, developing over time and adapting to the environment and expectations
imposed upon it as it grows. When observed carefully, a pattern of distinct phases emerge in this
growth process. It is important to recognize and take advantage of these various stages of development
in order to maximize group effectiveness and efficiency. There are several different models for small
group development, but Tuckman s model is probably the most famous sequential stage theory
(Johnson Johnson, 2016, p.27). This paper will discuss the five stages of group development
according to Tuckman s model as well as some practical leadership guidelines that will help a group
remain effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of great value at this stage is encouragement and patience. The reason for the conflict is generally
insecurity (Bonebright, 2010, p. 114), so providing a strong support system an reassurance can help
move a group to the next phase.
As members of the group begin to feel safe and secure, the conflict will settle and the group will
develop a bond and unified goals. Labeled a period of norming, it is characterized by close
relationships and cohesiveness (Group Development, 2003). In fact, this stage is so characterized by
relationship that it could almost be viewed as a honeymoon phase. Group members will frequently set
aside differences and unity becomes a priority. It is important at this stage to emphasize honesty and
creativity because the group will likely be trying so hard to be amenable that some members may hold
back. Others will be ready to open up given their newfound sense of security within the group. This is
also a critical time for the group because it typically delineates a time to commit (Johnson Johnson,
2016). If a group reaches this stage and not all members are on board, it may hinder progress.
Once a group has developed cohesiveness, it will truly begin to produce. This phase of effectiveness is
titled performing according to Tuckman s model. At this stage, the group is a problem solving
instrument , capable of working through obstacles and accomplishing goals (Bonebright, 2010, p.
114). Is it not uncommon for groups

CO2 Evolved due to Temperature s Effect on Yeast Fermentation of Glucose
Abstract
This experiment measured the amount of CO2 evolved based on yeast fermentation of glucose. It was
hypothesized that at room temperature, about 22 degrees Celsius, less CO2 would be produced than
when tested at 37 degrees Celsius. In order to determine the amount of CO2 evolved, an experiment
was set up involving yeast, glucose, deionized water, and heat. To begin the experiment, six
fermentation flasks were acquired. Six milliliters of 10% glucose was pipetted into each flask,
followed by 10 mL of deionized water and 8 mL of the prepared yeast solution. After each flask was
placed at the appropriate temperatures necessary for the experiment, the production of CO2 started to
be monitored. Data was recorded consecutively every two minutes over a time period of twenty
minutes, and recorded in a data chart. The average CO2 production at 37 degrees Celsius and 22
degrees Celsius was determined from the t test results. According to these results, the average amount
of CO2 produced after twenty minutes at 37 degrees Celsius was 123 millimeters, and the average
CO2 produced at 22 degrees was 26 millimeters. These results proved the hypothesis as more ... Show

In this experiment, the rate of fermentation was increased while at higher temperatures due to the
increased rate of enzymatic activity. Enzymatic activity due to the level of kinetic energy also plays a
significant role in the rate of yeast fermentation of glucose (Gale, T., 2006). Given that enzymes are
more active at higher temperatures, this means that fermentation occurs at higher temperatures as well.
Since heat causes enzymes to become more active, naturally more CO2 was produced over time at 37
degrees rather than at 22

Sadism is defined as the derivation of sexual pleasure from the infliction of pain, suffering and/or
humiliation upon another person. The pain and suffering of the victim, which may be both physical
and psychological, is pivotal to the sexual arousal and pleasure. According to Bernard (1933) sadism
hence represents a pathological intensification of the masculine mental character. Characteristics of
sadism according to DSM IV (2000) is as follows: having over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent,
intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving acts (real, not simulated) in
which the psychological or physical suffering including humiliation of the victim is sexually exciting
to the person, as well as the person has acted on these urges with a non consenting person, or the
sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty. Introduction Sexual sadism
is noticed primarily in males and generally starts with puberty, in spite of the fact that sadistic
behavior may be manifested prematurely in children. In all male cases, it becomes obvious by early
adulthood. According to Hucker (2009), sexual sadism may start off with fantasies and, in some cases,
these may never be acted upon or, be acted out in the more mild forms of consensual relationships. In
non consensual cases, the behavior usually continues and often escalates over time as the perpetrator
experiences a need for increased violence in order to stimulate the

How Did Saddam Hussein Die
Some believe that Saddam Hussein should have not died because he did not actually finish creating
the nuclear weapons, others think that it is better now that he is gone. He had many nuclear weapon
facilities that were made. Hussein hid this from International Atomic Energy agency or the IAEA for
many years. He definitely did not plan on using these weapons for good, and if he did finish then there
would have been quite a disaster. These nuclear bombs and weapons he wanted to create would have
killed a ton of people. In trying to create these bombs and weapons in Iraq, Hussein knew exactly
what he was doing and tried his best to hide it. In knowing the history of the nuclear weapon program
maybe there could have been something to stop the damage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

On September 9, 2002 it states that Saddam Hussein could have built a nuclear bomb in months if he
was able to get the material he needed. He had wanted to make nuclear weapons and went on a
worldwide hunt for materials to make an atomic bomb. In previous months, Iraq wanted to buy
thousands of specially designed aluminum tubes. The IAEA believed that these were made to enrich
the uranium. When the IAEA and the UNSCOM finally found out during one of the inspections they
wanted to get rid of all the weapons and equipment in the facilities. Saddam Hussein never got to
finish what he started because he was executed on December 31, 2006 for his actions of the nuclear
facilities and killing his own people. Iraq still has the expertise and some of the materials needed to
build nuclear weapons. Before Saddam Hussein death, he had repeatedly met with his nuclear
scientists for two years because he wanted to continue in developing his nuclear program. This never
happened because in 2003 he was caught and was put in a United States base in Baghdad until he was
handed over to Iraqi government to face crimes against humanity on June 30 2004. He requested to
get shot for his death penalty but was hung

Code of conduct: Code of conduct is a set of rules and guidelines for pupils so they understand how
they should behave in school and what is expected of them. It is important that the children are
reminded of the code of conduct so that it becomes their routine and they fully understand it. It is
essential that positive behaviour is always promoted and praised to encourage children to continue
their good choices . Teachers and other adults in schools should also demonstrate positive behaviour
as children notice when adults behaviour is out of character. If teachers are being positive role models
it is more likely that pupils will also behave in a positive way. 1.2 Evaluate how the policies and
procedures of the setting support children and young people to: * Feel safe * Make a positive
contribution * Develop social and emotional skills * Understand expectations and limits In my setting
we follow the framework of Every Child Matters and its 5 outcomes. Two of these outcomes apply to

  • 2. A Lecture Hall Is Filled At The Brim With College Students Imagine this scenario: a lecture hall is filled to the brim with college students, more than half of the students are either daydreaming about the upcoming weekend or texting on their phones. Their professor stands in the front of the hall trying to give his prepared lecture, but the majority of his students are not paying attention. What shall the professor do to motivate his students to pay attention in class? He announces to them that if they can fully engage themselves in his lecture for the rest of the class time, he will give them each five dollars. The students are suddenly all ears, pens ready to take notes, eyes glued to the front of the room, in hopes of receiving the professor s incentive. Does this seem like a harmless scenario for a desperate professor to motivate his students? While there are possibly individuals who would agree that the scenario is not invoking any harm on the students, there are others who would argue that paying students to try in school takes away their motivation to actually learn. Among the latter stands Alfie Kohn, author or Punished By Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A s, Praise, and Other Bribes, who would be appalled by the professor s actions. Kohn s book challenges the common phenomenon of using rewards in everyday life in dealing with others. With examples pulled from schools, the workplace, and even households, he demonstrates to his audience that rewards have become means of controlling one another than as ... • 3. Coach Carter Hero When thinking of a hero, the first idea that comes to mind is a person that receives admiration due to the acts in which they perform. With that said, a person that I personally admire is Ken Carter. Ken Carter was a basketball player who excelled at the collegiate level. He used the experience he gained to become a head basketball coach at Richmond High School, a rough inner city school filled with below average students. Coach Carter accepted the job hoping to change this disturbing trend of grades. He turned a disappointing team of young men into superb athletes, but more importantly better students with the use of his strict coaching technique. I see Coach Carter as a hero due to his helpfulness, bravery, and love for others. Ken Carter s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Living in the city of Richmond, Carter and his players were exposed to drugs, alcohol, and gang violence. Many of the players on the team were a part of these gangs. One particular player, Timo Cruz, was in a gang and unable to get out of it. Timo caused much disruption at practice and had a problem with instigating fights. While Carter disapproved of this behavior, he knew that if he kicked Cruz off the team that the young man s life would continue to spiral downward. Keeping this in mind, Coach Carter allowed Cruz to stay on the team; however, he continually talked to him about leaving the gang life. Carter s true love was seen when Cruz s cousin who was in the gang with him was shot during a drug deal. • 4. Short Essay On Jimmy Hoffa Jimmy Hoffa was a character of a man, and a smart one at that. A pioneer in the labor union community, Hoffa controversially climbed up the Teamsters union chain of command. On his way up though, Hoffa made many enemies in the business of organized crime. His aggressively sly behavior earned him as much respect as it did threats, and his work made him more successful than he could have ever imagined. In all of his glory, Hoffa vanished like it did. There is no doubt that Hoffa is gone, but the question is, was it by choice or by murder? James Riddle Hoffa was born on february 14th, 1913 in Brazil, Indiana. He dropped out of school at a young age to work and help support his family. Working for a local loading dock in Detroit, hoffa got to see poor labor conditions first hand. He organized his first strike shortly after. Using fresh strawberries as a bargaining tool, he landed better contracts for the other workers and himself. While studying art history in Pre Industrial Visual Cultures this semester, one theme has become painfully obvious. There are few if any women artists included in the study of art history. If you dig deep into the books you can find mention of many unknown, unrecognized and often times very talented women artists from the past. Women in history are simply not recognized, and this is due to a large extent to their exclusion from the art world. Along with this there are hundreds of other names and these include past women artists including Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt. The purpose of this piece was to show how many women from history are unrecognized and forgotten. These women have made lasting and powerful contributions to our society and yet they are essentially left out of history and overshadowed by their male counterparts. This was especially true in art history, and Chicago attempted to show how important it was that females have a place in history. Therefore the exclusion of women from history, had a profound impact on Chicago and greatly impacted her art making. The Dinner Partyî utilizes female sexual imagery to further establish a female presence in the work. The plates for ìThe Dinner Partyî clearly depict vaginal imagery. Chicago termed this imagery central core imagery and she attempted to invent a new female language. Chicago in an interview with Lucy Lippard says that, ìif women make art differently from men, it means that women are actually independent from menî (Lippard, 228). Her work was trying to eradicate the negative stereotypes people had about females and establish the importance of women both in the past and present. • 7. Evolution And Adaptive Value Of Brood Parasitism Within... The Evolution and Adaptive Value of Brood Parasitism within Cuckoo Birds. Abstract Brood parasitism is a unique behavior performed by some species that tricks another host species into raising its young. This is a fairly common behavior among the Cuculidae family of which 53 of the 136 species perform brood parasitism. My question and what I hope to review within this paper is, what has caused brood parasitism, what has shaped it, and what are the adaptive values of Cuckoo brood parasitism? Within Cuckoo s, this strange behavior has ultimately been shaped through environmental pressures and has become advantageous. Ecological changes forced Cuckoo s to change migrational patterns, habitat, range size, and foraging, which lead to brood parasitism. Once brood parasitism arose, a coevolutionary arms race began between the Cuckoo s and hosts. Due to parasitic egg rejections, Cuckoo eggs that closely resembled host eggs were selected for, leading to higher success rates of the behavior. This gives Cuckoo s many advantageous , as there is no longer a need for investing time and energy into raising their young. Brood parasitism also gives Cuckoo s the advantage of exploiting diverse breeding habitats; reduced diet restraints, and foraging. Ultimately this behavior provides many benefits to Cuckoos and allows them successfully raise young while providing no parental care. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, by Robert Frost Essay Robert Frost uses metaphor and symbolism extensively in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening , developing deeper and more complex meanings from a superficially simple poem. Frost s own analysis contributes greatly to our appreciation of the importance of metaphor, claiming that metaphor [is] the whole of thinking, inviting the reader to interpret the beautiful scene in a more profound way. However, the multitude of possible interpretations sees it being read as either carefully crafted lyric, a suicide poem, [or] as recording a single autobiographical incident . Judith Oster argues, therefore, that the social conditions individual to each reader tangibly alter our understanding of metaphor. Despite the simplicity of language, ... The downy flake transcends its literal sense, becoming a blanket that both obscures and numbs the senses, hiding the dangers whilst tempting the traveller to stop. • 9. The Blind Side By John Lee Hancock On the surface, The Blind Side may seem like a great feel good movie, but once the movie is analyzed, it s apparent that the movie is filled with blatant stereotypes as well as racism. The Blind Side, based off of a true story, shows the protagonist escaping poverty against all odds and growing up to be very successful with the help of a select few. Although some may argue that escaping poverty and becoming successful like Michael did is very possible this connotation of escaping poverty depicted in the movie is highly unrealistic, contributes to derogative stereotypes, and would also be very unlikely to happen in real life. The Blind Side, a feel good sports drama intended for everyone, especially young kids and teenagers, was released on November 20th in 2009 and was directed by John Lee Hancock. The Blind side was very successful in the box office, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars and quickly became the movie to see of the thanksgiving holiday season. The Blind Side starred Sandra Bullock, playing the role of an extremely wealthy white woman. Her character, Mrs. Tuohy, a feisty, passionate and caring Christian woman, took in a homeless African American kid, Michael Oher. Architectural professional practice is a relatively regional field in which architects conduct their comprehensive manner in a specific localized territory. Due to the current fact that more and more American architects practice in China, it is not an easy time for them to interact or communicate with remote brains on the other side of earth. • 25. Taking a Look at Hinduism Many religions offer an exact path to the afterlife; illuminated by various rules and regulations that one must follow to reach enlightenment. Hinduism, on the other hand, is much more complex, offering multiple ways to achieve moksha and providing many answers to the ancient question of what happens after we die? Many people think that Hindus believe in many deities, but the Hindu concept of God is much broader than that. In fact, Hinduism itself encompasses much more than just one specific set of religious beliefs. While some Hindus believe that God is a divine being with certain identifiable attributes, others believe that God cannot be defined and is an all pervading being that extends beyond everything. Although some beliefs differ, the majority of Hindus see the concept of God in multiple ways. Among these are the concepts of God as one and many, God and the soul, God as sound, God as image, God in nature, cows, and avatara. One of Hinduism s most distinguishing features is the concept of multiple gods. These multiple gods are manifestations of the various powers of the divine. Hindus believe that the all pervasive God is both one and many. Because this concept carries the idea of God as an omnipresent being, everything can be seen as being God s form. Hindus worship many Gods, but they also believe that the divine is singular or one. These Gods are representations of different aspects of the overall God. Although their worship of multiple ... In My Brother the Unabomber by Ed Pilkington and Montana 1948 by Larry Watson, the authors have a similar viewpoint on the importance of justice in a society. They show these similarities through the motivations of David and the members of the Hayden family. David Kaczynski and Wes have parallel viewpoints on adherence to the principled administration of the law. David has lived the typical life of most civilians until he learns that his brother Ted is the infamous Unabomber. Wes s role in the justice system suddenly strikes him as he recognizes that burying the truth only encourages falsehood to build. This awareness provokes forceful emotions to course through Wes s mind as he expresses frustration with a violent fist. At first, Wes criticizes himself for thinking he could offer mercy to a convict. It becomes apparent to him that lawbreakers invariably deserve some form of punishment for their wrongdoings. He shakes his head at the bias of the the corrupt jury which would cut [Frank] loose simply because of his infallible reputation. Nonetheless, Wes swears to God that he will penalize his brother despite the county s majority point of view. Obeying and prosecuting the rules should be prioritized over one s image. The fact that the criminal is his own brother fails to persuade his mindset. A lawbreaker will be a lawbreaker regardless of his or her assumed character. Wes is prepared to take the first initiative and perhaps stir up trouble in the community in order to do what is morally right. Both pieces of literature strongly convey the message that one must defend the law. David voluntarily exposes Ted to the FBI knowing he is jeopardizing his brother s life while Wes concludes that Frank is not entitled to mercy and should serve time in jail. • 30. The Strong Sense Of Totalitarianism In George Orwell s 1984 Nothing unmasks a man like his use of power Elbert Hubbard. When power goes too far, you get to see what people are really like. George Orwell s 1984 demonstrates a strong sense of totalitarianism in a society called Oceania . The leader of Oceania is the Inner Party, or the Party for short. The Party is a group of elites who use a symbolic figure they call Big Brother to control the middle and lower classes. They use the Thought Police, which is a government group of unknown individuals that aim to suppress these lower classes and their individuality. This helps to accomplish the Party s goal of complete control. In a world with manipulation and surveillance, it is inevitable that government corruption exists. Big Brother uses brainwashing as a way of manipulating children. When the Parsons children strike Winston, he thinks to himself, that wretched women must lead a life of terror. Another year...they would be watching her day and night for symptoms of unorthodoxy...all children nowadays were horrible...they were systematically turned into ungovernable little savages (Orwell 24). With this method of manipulation, the children feel that they should be more loyal to Big Brother than to their own families. The children attend the Party s youth organization called the Junior Spies, where they teach the kids to spy on their parents and to report them to the Thought Police if they are not following the rules. This is effective because the parents would feel like their children will be merciful, but in reality, the children will betray them and expose their wrongdoings. This breaks contemporary American norms by allowing the government to control the parents through the children. If the parents get caught by their kids, they can get vaporized , and the children would feel like they are fulfilling their duty to Big Brother, rather than thinking they are committing disloyalty to their families. The childhood brainwashing establishes emotional discipline in adulthood. However, this means the adults are never able to show their true emotions. In order for there to be revenge, the act of punishing someone who has done something wrong in one s eyes, three things are needed: a motive, the expression that he wants revenge, and the carrying out of the act. They are obeying the law, paying taxes, attending school, serving in court, and defending the nation. While defending the nation and serving in court are important, obeying the law, paying taxes, and attending school are more important as they make sure that there is even a nation worth defending. Citizens obeying the law is vital to a country s survival. If a country s citizens didn t obey the same set of laws, then the country would quickly unravel. Every person in a country adhering to their own set of laws would lead to increased danger and ability for discrimination. For example, if the speed limit on a highway is 75 mph in a country where everyone obeys the law, car accidents would be few and far between but in a country where people don t care about the law, car accidents would happen significantly more due to people going whatever speed they pleased. A concern of the statistical data of high school dropouts is the disparaging number of minority students who drop out of high school in comparison to whites and Asians. A 1993 research by John Hopkins University flagged 2,000 high schools across the country as potential dropout factories because 40 percent or more of their freshmen fail to make it to 12th grade on time (Viadero, 2004). These schools are in medium and bigger size cities and have a significant black and Latino student population. Florida is the one exception, where many of the failing students are rural white. In 2003, it was estimated that 6 percent of whites, in comparison to 12 percent of blacks had dropped out of school (Child Trend, 2003). The primary reason appears that these school districts have a variety of disadvantages, such as resources and money to improve schools and programs. These schools are located in lower socio economic communities. However, these disadvantaged students are judged on the same achievement standards as students who live in higher economic districts with better resources and tools. Latin Americans constitute the highest percentage of high school dropouts. 24 percent of Latin Americans dropped out of school in 2003 (Child Trends, 2003). Principle Component Analysis (PCA) Principle component analysis, also referred to as eigenvector transformation, Hotelling transformation and Karhunen Loeve transformation in remote sensing, is a multivariate technique [66] that is used to decrease dataset dimensionality. In this technique, the original remote sensing dataset, which is a correlated variable, is distorted into a simpler dataset for analysis. This permits the dataset to be uncorrelated variables representing the most significant information from the novel [21]. The computation of the variance covariance matrix (C) of multiband images is expressed as: Where M and X are the multiband image mean and individual pixel value vectors respectively, and n is the number of pixels. When observed carefully, a pattern of distinct phases emerge in this growth process. It is important to recognize and take advantage of these various stages of development in order to maximize group effectiveness and efficiency. There are several different models for small group development, but Tuckman s model is probably the most famous sequential stage theory (Johnson Johnson, 2016, p.27). The reason for the conflict is generally insecurity (Bonebright, 2010, p. 114), so providing a strong support system an reassurance can help move a group to the next phase. As members of the group begin to feel safe and secure, the conflict will settle and the group will develop a bond and unified goals. Labeled a period of norming, it is characterized by close relationships and cohesiveness (Group Development, 2003). In fact, this stage is so characterized by relationship that it could almost be viewed as a honeymoon phase. Group members will frequently set aside differences and unity becomes a priority. It is important at this stage to emphasize honesty and creativity because the group will likely be trying so hard to be amenable that some members may hold back. Others will be ready to open up given their newfound sense of security within the group. This is also a critical time for the group because it typically delineates a time to commit (Johnson Johnson, 2016). If a group reaches this stage and not all members are on board, it may hinder progress. Once a group has developed cohesiveness, it will truly begin to produce. Yeast Fermentation Lab Report Brittney Tokarick Dr. Yorty Bio111 Lab November 5, 2014 CO2 Evolved due to Temperature s Effect on Yeast Fermentation of Glucose Abstract This experiment measured the amount of CO2 evolved based on yeast fermentation of glucose. It was hypothesized that at room temperature, about 22 degrees Celsius, less CO2 would be produced than when tested at 37 degrees Celsius. In order to determine the amount of CO2 evolved, an experiment was set up involving yeast, glucose, deionized water, and heat. To begin the experiment, six fermentation flasks were acquired. Six milliliters of 10% glucose was pipetted into each flask, followed by 10 mL of deionized water and 8 mL of the prepared yeast solution. After each flask was placed at the appropriate temperatures necessary for the experiment, the production of CO2 started to be monitored. Data was recorded consecutively every two minutes over a time period of twenty minutes, and recorded in a data chart. The average CO2 production at 37 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius was determined from the t test results. The Relationship Between Sadism And Its Effects On Children Sadism is defined as the derivation of sexual pleasure from the infliction of pain, suffering and/or humiliation upon another person. The pain and suffering of the victim, which may be both physical and psychological, is pivotal to the sexual arousal and pleasure. According to Bernard (1933) sadism hence represents a pathological intensification of the masculine mental character. Characteristics of sadism according to DSM IV (2000) is as follows: having over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving acts (real, not simulated) in which the psychological or physical suffering including humiliation of the victim is sexually exciting to the person, as well as the person has acted on these urges with a non consenting person, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty. Introduction Sexual sadism is noticed primarily in males and generally starts with puberty, in spite of the fact that sadistic behavior may be manifested prematurely in children. In all male cases, it becomes obvious by early adulthood. According to Hucker (2009), sexual sadism may start off with fantasies and, in some cases, these may never be acted upon or, be acted out in the more mild forms of consensual relationships.
