Evolution Of Air Immress
An air mattress can really come in handy in a variety of situations you might come across. Whether
you re going camping, spending the night at friend s and relatives, or have guests sleeping over, you
you have many comforting options to choose from. The evolution of the air mattress has really come a
long way, some being as comfortable as your very own everyday bed mattress. They come in different
sizes like single, twin and double, and when deflated, are no bigger than the average sleeping bag for

The Necessity of Personal Responsibility Essay
Personal responsibility may be perceived in many ways, but it is imperative to understand the
relevance of why it must begin with our self. First, one will never develop an attitude of responsibility
if they always look for others to complete their task. It is a necessity that one has personal discipline
or their efforts to be responsible will prove to be fruitless. Second, being responsible yields great
rewards and acting responsible is a clear sign of maturity. A responsible individual looks to no one but
self and no matter what the outcome; they are willing to stand by their decisions. (Maltby 2009),
Personal responsibility is concerned with people taking individual accountability for their decisions
and actions, together with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personal responsibility may yield many rewards. For example, Mary s entry level position at Trump
Towers was administrative assistant. During a period of one year, Mary validated her worth by
working overtime and always volunteering to help with other projects. As Mary continued to flourish
in completing her assignments, she was elevated from administrative assistant to executive director of
the accounting department. There are many levels of maturity, but maturity is a process that students
develop over a period of time. Consequently, the student that matures quickly is likely to initiate an
educational plan that will increase their academic success. One preliminary plan that a student can
design to achieve academic success is goal setting. Goal setting allows the student to define their
academic goals and to devise a plan that will accommodate their collegiate career. One way to make
goals effective is to examine them up close. (Ellis, p. 70,2011) Prior to this point we established
several factors to confirm the necessity of personal responsibility, but here we will interject effective
strategies that a student must use to generate success in their chosen field of study. Research and
observation reveals that the most successful students are accountable, but also have a strong
determination to apply practical concepts to achieve their academic goals. The successful student
operates in congruence between faculty and

How Does L1 Support Literacy In L2
In this paper, I will discuss definitions of literacy, review research related to the transfer of literacy
skills, and suggest practical applications of research findings of ways Linguistics (L1) support literacy
in L2 for individuals learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Further, I will explore
instructional practices implemented as L1 is transferred to L2 knowledge base. As learning practices
for L1 and L2 are outlined, cognates of L2 will be demonstrated in this paper for further
understanding. In addition, L1 proficiency learners stem from individuals first language also known as
their mother language. L1 can be described in four acquisition stages from the following: (1) babbling
(2) one word (3) two word (4) string of words ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Literacy in L1 can support literacy in L2 in a variety of ways. Many researchers and practitioners in
ESL/Bilingual Education or ESL/BE are aware of research evidence which supports such transfer, but
research is not always applied to practice. According to Roberts (1994), literacy in L1 supports L2 by
being able to transfer the teachings to L2 students. Research shows that knowledge of alphabets and
awareness of phonological can an are strong predictors of literacy development in children being
successful (Ford, K.2005).
Lee Schaller s (1997) quantitative study examined the relationships between ELL students who
demonstrated a level of proficiency compared to ELL students basic reading skills. The study (1997)
tested two hypotheses to check reliability and validity; the hypotheses were examined from the
following: (1) a foundation of language proficiency showed learners with below average levels in L2
proficiency showed little relationship between their L1 and L2 reading ability whereas learners with
above average in L2 proficiency demonstrated a positive relationship between their L1 and L2 reading
abilities.(b) The benefit of L2 proficiency was higher than the benefit of L1 reading ability in
predicting L2 reading ability. In addition, Schaller Lee s (1997) study showed a correlation between
the two hypotheses. For example, when L2 learners obtain previous knowledge from L1 experiences,
their reading skills can potentially improve as information is

The impact of Apple products in the electronic business market and what makes them more superior

Introduction:
To begin with, the investigation will be made in this research to know about the product which
produced from Apple in e business market and how well they create an environment to make their
products more superior from their competing rivalries. The reason behind selecting this company is
because the way they produced or manufactured their products goes beyond the expectation of their

Though they have been well maintained their relationship with their consumer, apple has seen some
issues with their products in consumer circle after the release of those product in which the consumer
find some problems such as antenna performance in apple i phone 4.
Performance quality:
Most of the products are established at one of four performance levels: low, average, high, or superior.
Performance quality is the level at which the products primary characteristics operate. Quality is
becoming an increasingly important dimension for differentiation as companies adopt a value model
and provide higher quality for less money (p.kotler, et al, 2009). Apple has established their products
in high and superior levels and their quality performance has been operated in the high level of
products. The quality of apple products has been differentiated with their every single model
production; their manufacturer has made the design to match up to the needs of consumers and to
competing the performance level. This strategy of apple has seen in i phone models, macbook and I
pads. Their competitors try to follow the design which apple has but they can t produce those features
which apple has in their products. That s made them more superior with their products and creates

Is Jay Gatsby Selfish
A variety of novels often highlight certain social occasions in order to reveal the true value of another
person s character. Jay Gatsby is a successful businessman who is often taken advantage of by the
wealthy half of New York such as Daisy Buchanan, Meyer Wolfsheim, and Klipspringer. In the novel,
The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author exposes the true societal views of 1920s
New York through the funeral that follows the death of Jay Gatsby, where the writer displays the
empty values of a self centered society, which takes advantage of others by discarding them when they
become of no more use. The affluent 1920s New York society seems to have their own set of moral
beliefs that they live by, different from the majority ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick Carraway s despair after the death of Gatsby reflects upon how much he cared for Gatsby. Nick
realizes that after inviting many people to Gatsby s funeral, nobody cared about him like Nick did. To
illustrate, But all this part of it seemed remote and unessential. I found myself on Gatsby s side, and
alone (Fitzgerald 264). Nick is the only person who seemed to be taking care of Gatsby after all that
has happened, and he knows that he is all Gatsby has. In relative terms, Nick s feels hopeless after the
loss of Gatsby and it shows that Nick has always valued Gatsby for who he was as a person. To
continue, after the many calls Nick makes, only a select few show to the funeral. Nick becomes
anxious due to the fact that he believes all of the people Gatsby once knew would be there for him. In
particular, as Nick arrives to the cemetery he frantically looks for other cars to appear but then realizes
it isn t any use, and nobody else will be coming (FItzgerald 174). To Nick s distress, he comes to the
conclusion that not many people actually knew Gatsby, but rather used him for his popularity and
entertainment. In other words, Nick is one of the few in this society whose standards are not immoral.
Therefore, as the funeral takes place, Nick s sorrow only grows for the little respect that was paid to

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Speech Recognition
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
People use calculators to perform calculations that have a numeric keypad to input the data and a
display to get the result. To overcome this, speech signal can be used to input the data and the result is
an audio signal.
Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It ranges from 90 Hz to 7,000 Hz. Each
spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant
speech sound units. The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency from
85 to 180 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. Thus, the fundamental frequency
of most speech falls below the bottom of the voice frequency band as defined above.
Speech recognition is a process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally the more traing, the higher the perfromance of the system for virtually any task. The
reference pattern are sensitive to the speaking environment and transmission characteristics of the
medium used to create the speech, this is because the speech spectral characteristics are affected by
transmission and background noise. No speech specific knowledge is used explicitly in the system;
hence the method is relatively in sensitive to choice of vocabulary words, task, syntax, and task
semantics. The computational load for both pattern training and pattern classification is generally
linearly proportional to the number of patterns being trained or recognized. Hence computation for a
large number of sound classes could and often does become prohibitive. Because the system is
insensitive to sound class, the basic techniques are applicable to a wide range of speech sounds,
including phrases, whole words and sub word units. The basic set of techniques developed for one
sound class (e.g., words) can generally be directly applied to different sound classes (e.g., subword
units) with little or no modifications to the

McDonald s Faces Millennial Challenge by: Julie Jargon
Aug 25, 2014

and gourmet burger chain Five Guys. Younger diners are seeking out fresher, healthier food and chains
that offer customizable menu options for little more than the price of a combo meal.

I do have nostalgic memories of McDonald s, but Chipotle has much better quality food, or at least it
feels like they do, said Mr. Petersen, who recently graduated from Duke University.
McDonald s says new items like its McWrap sandwiches chicken and vegetables rolled in tortillas are
helping to woo millennials, consumers in their midteens to mid 30s. The Oak Brook, Ill. based
company also is trying to enhance its credibility with young customers by marketing more on digital

The millennial generation has a wider range of choices than any generation before them, McDonald s
Global Chief Brand Officer Steve Easterbrook said in an interview. They re promiscuous in their
brand loyalty. It makes it harder work for all of us to earn the loyalty of the millennial generation.
McDonald s U.S. sales struggles have also been compounded recently by other woes challenging Mr.

In China, a former bright spot, sales have fallen after authorities last month accused a key supplier of
selling expired meat. McDonald s said the problem drove sales at existing locations in its Asia/Pacific,
Middle East and Africa region down by 7.3% in July.

Essay on Tort Reform
Tort Law and Cases:
A Comparison of Two Cases and Their Potential Frivolity8/22/2010

Introduction
A tort is a civil wrong resulting in injury to a person or property ; that is brought before a court to
compensate the injured party (Bagley amp; Savage, 2010, pg 251). In order to prove an intentional
tort, the following conditions must be met: 1) Intent 2) Voluntary act by the defendant 3) Causation 4)
Injury or Harm.
The following tort cases, Pearson v. Chung and Liebeck v. McDonalds, have been a pinnacle poster

law fraud and that they violated the CPPA by displaying signs that read Satisfaction Guaranteed , All

$67 million dollars, since that is what it would take for the Chungs to satisfy his claim (Pearson 2). It
was Mr. Pearson s belief, that there is an unconditional warranty that Custom Cleaners now must

pretrial discovery, the court confirmed that all work was done on premises, and the judge granted
summary judgment to the defendants on the portion of fraud. Mr. Pearson amended his lawsuit and
stated that he is not suing for lost pants , but only regarding the Satisfaction Guaranteed sign. (Pearson

In addition, the claim tickets that are printed have limitations on the back which further limit the
unlimited guarantee that is provided by the signs hanging in the store, which is a violation of the FTC
regulations regarding Satisfaction Guaranteed (Pearson 20). The court, however, ruled that the

A Path of Destruction The generation of today is always busy on some form of media. Media consist
of television, video games, the internet, and smartphones just to name a few. It is thought to be
necessary for life in this everyday world. While technology can be fun, and is often used for many
good things, it also seems to create a few problems. Many individuals are of the opinion that the
media has little to no effect on murderous acts of violence, and others tend to lean in a very different
direction thinking that it is mere corruption. Media involving violence is believed by several to initiate
vicious acts, leading normal situations to change into dangerous ones.

Television was going strong by the 1960 s, and world events were aired for families to see. On
November 22, 1963, a CBS radio news bulletin interrupted As The World Turns to report that John F.
Kennedy had been seriously wounded by shots fired at his motorcade (Sneed 5). The incident was
reported in newspapers all across the world. The Vietnam War was escalating and the Civil Rights

In the decade of the 1970 s television was beginning to be more open about sex. Daytime TV was all

The Traditional Family And The Socialization Of The Modern...
Introduction.
The family is one of the oldest but most important institution known to man and the society in which
he/ she lives. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2005) a family consists of two or more people,
one of whom is the householder, related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing in the same
housing unit. A household consists of all people who occupy a housing unit regardless of relationship.
A household may consist of a person living alone or multiple unrelated individuals or families living
together. Therefore, during the course of time, the family structure has evolved, in some cases,
changed which resulted in different family structures forming. Two of the most important are the
traditional family structure and the modern family structure. As a result, various theorists have his/ her
own views of these two family structures. With the views expressed by those theorists, it ... Show

The structural functionalists view the traditional family as an important institution which is the basic
building block of society that carry out the crucial functions of socialising the young and meeting the
emotional needs of its members. Additionally, some theorists argue that traditional family is universal.
To this extend, they see the family as performing several essential functions. These include:
a) Stable satisfaction of the sex drive within monogomous relationships
b) The biological reproduction of the next generation without which society cannot continue.
c) Socialisation of the young teaching basic norms and values
d) Meeting its members economic needs producing food and shelter for example
Some hold the view that the traditional family is the only institution that can perform two core
functions in society: Primary Socialisation and the Stabilisation of Adult Personalities.

of society known as Primary

Sorry Not Sorry By Rowan Blanchard Summary
As evidenced by Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, and Rowan Blanchard s essay about white
feminism, Rowan Blanchard is both ambitious and honorable in her ways of learning to stop
apologizing when she does not live up to societal norms for a teenage girl and starting to slowly
become a young feminist icon. Rowan is a 14 year old actress in the Disney Channel show Girl Meets

beyond her years and sounds like a woman with college level knowledge. She is an intersectional
feminist, i.e., feminism that includes women of all colors, races, sexuality, and gender spectrum
identities and the oppression they face in society. For such a small girl, she is not afraid to voice her
opinions and educate others on important women s rights topics, shying away from the white
feminism becoming more mainstream daily.
In Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, Blanchard wrote In order to quit apologizing to other people, you
must first and foremost learn to stop apologizing for being yourself to yourself. [..] You can only do

Immigration About Immigration
Multitudes of people every year try to illegally cross the border between Mexico and the United
States. They do this in the hope that if they become citizens, they will gain the freedom and
opportunities Americans have. This is what Turcios family was aiming for. This family originates from
the Honduran countryside, this family had minimal paying jobs, so they saved up enough money to be
illegally smuggled into the US border in 1994. They considered returning back, but after a hurricane
that struck Honduras, they remained. They tried to smuggle their children but were only able to get
some of them to the US. The author is trying to say that immigration is a hard process and that the
government does not seem to care. The author is trying to say that one may have big dreams, but
turning it into reality is a whole other story. In addition, if someone truly believes in their dreams, then
their own lives will not be as essential to them.
Immigration is not necessarily a walk in the park, only we don t perceive this way because we have
never walked in their shoes. Other than the fact that an immigrant may feel inferior to others, they are
not treated equally by the government. Even though immigration seems fine with temporary
protection, technically they are not citizens. They did not have a chance for financial aid/student loans,
had to work harder than others, not having the same freedom/advantages that everyone around them
has and living in constant fear. According to

The effects of green fluorescent protein on E. coli bacteria
Introduction:
Genetic transformation occurs when genes are inserted into another gene to change the organism s
trait (Weedman2016). In this experiment, we proceeded to transform the E. coli bacteria with a gene
that contained green fluorescent protein. The green fluorescent protein is used in experiments because
it beams a green color under a UV light (Chalfie2008). Typically, it is used to mark the expression of
genes, which is why it serves as the symbol for all gene expressions (Tsien1998). In the experiment,
we will be using pGLO as the organisms that will transmit the disease, otherwise known as a vector.

Death and Dying in DeLillo s White Noise Essay
Death and Dying in DeLillo s White Noise
Among other things, Don DeLillo seems completely preoccupied with death and the arduous task of
living with the knowledge of death in his novel White Noise. Acceptance of our finite, fragile
existence over time is certainly not a phenomenon unique to a single civilization or historical era.
Rather than discuss the inescapable mortality that connects all humankind with broad, generalized
strokes, DeLillo is concerned with the particular (peculiar?) late Twentieth Century cultural and
psychological mechanisms that attempt to define, recast, or obscure the relationship between the self
and death. Technology, he asserts, has fostered a material culture of consummation, of insatiable
appetites ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But as Jack states, When your death is rendered graphically, is televised so to speak,...you sense an
eerie separation between your condition and yourself (37,61,142). Death, when it becomes an
impending part of Jack s consciousness, ceases to be a professional matter (74). Doctors become
modern high priests, the only member of society capable of deciphering the network of symbols, an
entire awesome technology wrested from the gods (142). Death, in many respects, takes on a life of its
own, distinct from any particular individual; it becomes an observable, quantifiable phenomenon. This
might account for the almost perverse fascination with television disasters, death existing at a safe
distance. Every disaster made us wish for more... (64).
Unlike human beings, however, death is never the sum total of its data. Dylar fails to fulfill it promise
because death is larger, more accommodating, than any technology we can create. If we defeat death
on one front, it simply expands and fundamentally redefines itself. It is akin to the nebulous mass
growing inside Jack; it has no definite shape or form , but death has a presence in the novel as a sound,
white noise. It fills the motel room where Jack goes to kill Mink. The intensity of the noise was the
same at all frequencies. Sound all around (312). The normal activities of everyday life mask this noise,
but it is there nonetheless. Only at

Capitalism Essay
Capitalism
Throughout my duration in college, business has been my major area of concentration. Capitalism is
the most central and consequential topic which has to do with business. The ideals of capitalism, over
time, have faced much scrutiny. Many great minds within the past two centuries have discredited
capitalism, for the virtues of socialism and the whole of society. It is my intent to put forth a moral
justification of the ideals behind capitalism. Ayn Rand said The moral justification of capitalism does
not lie in the altruist claim that it represents the best way to achieve the common good .
It is true that capitalism does, if that catch phrase has any meaning, but this is merely a secondary ...

Assuming that consumers are most concerned with their own self interest, the demand for goods that
are the most useful or helpful for society will arise. Assuming, also, that producers are most concerned
with their own self interest, they will further their own cause by striving to produce those goods which
will be the most useful to society at the lowest possible cost. Many economists have debated that
capitalism is practical because it allows each individual to align their actions with their own thoughts,
instead of acting under the demands of bureaucrats. A multitude of minds attack each problem under
capitalism. The successful thinkers thrive because they are able to see the opportunities that the other
thinkers do not.
They think of new products and come up with more efficient production methods which are
innovative to their field. Everyone is able to begin a business, raise money, and market his own
product in a free market, and each individual thinker is free to use his own ideas, and his success or
failure is based on the merits of his own idea. The successful thinker brings improved and new
products at a lower cost which creates economic advance and opulence. In order to fully understand
capitalism, we must have some understanding of other politico economic systems. Socialism is a
theory of social organization that advocates the ownership and control of industry,

The Conversion Of The Jews By Philip Roth
In the short story, The Conversion of the Jews by Philip Roth, a young Jewish boy named Ozzie goes
to a Jewish school where he is punished for asking questions. Ozzie wants to know about Jesus, but
Rabbi Binder refuses to talk about Him because the Jewish religion believes that Jesus was just a
prophet who lived a normal life. Roth uses Ozzie s questions and behavior in class to represent how in
today s society, people are punished for questioning other s religion. People are supposed to believe
what is taught to them. Ozzie does not go against the beliefs of other Jewish members, but he does not
believe what the Jewish religion claims of Jesus Christ. He believes that Jesus was more than just a
normal man with normal human parents. He believes

Caregivers Action Plan
At the beginning of group we went over caregiver s action plan from last week. We encouraged
caregivers to discuss what their plan was and whether or not they were able to complete it. Then, we
went straight into this week s topic on positive and negative self talk and ways to reduce stress before
it occurs. Lastly, we had a planned breathing exercise at the end of today s group session. The group
session started off by caregivers sharing last week s action plan. Most of the caregivers were able to
complete their action plan and expressed how nice it felt to do something nice for them. Facilitators
encouraged those members who weren t able to complete their action plan to discuss some of the
barriers that got in the way. Significant moments were some of the ways caregivers relieved their
stress. Many of them liked to exercise and read books. Throughout this section, most caregivers could
relate to each other as far as having a difficult time to do the things they like to do because of their role
as a caregiver. Some caregivers have it better than others due to outside help. However, the majority of

Essay On Visit To Indonesia
With its incredible diversity, India is a feast for the senses for people around the world, with its colour,
character, philosophy and organised chaos. All my life I have revelled in this and considered myself
very fortunate to be a part of it. However, it has made my search for such diversity and vibrancy
elsewhere much harder.
Having planned some time off to travel last year, my wife, Sophia, and I narrowed the list of places we
wanted to visit to South America or Indonesia; and when a good friend related fascinating stories from
Indonesia, it seemed like a sleeping giant that the world knew little about so we decided to go and see
it for ourselves.

Bahasa Indonesia is the national language but interestingly has faced similar challenges in many parts
of the country to that with the adoption of Hindi as the national language in India. Indeed in Bali,
Balinese is widely spoken.
The Balinese worship the various gods of Hindu mythology and are all as familiar with the
Mahabharatha and the Ramayana as many Indians are. Each house is in fact considered a minor
temple, adding further to the astounding statistic of some 20,000 temples on this small island of no
more than two million people.
Offerings are made twice daily to the gods of the house and to the gods honoured in small shrines

Our Dependence on Others for Information in The Ignorant...
Having read The Ignorant Schoolmaster, the book informs an individual about the intellectual quests
of Joseph Jacotot, a man who put in great effort to advance his views of intellectual emancipation in
the 18th and 19th centuries. He explains how people are too dependent on others in order to obtain
knowledge which they can do on their own. *Upon reading his argument, I begin to agree with his
view on our education system and how it s dulling the minds of individuals. *
In the first chapter, An Intellectual Adventure, Ranciere believes that most individuals think they
cannot gain knowledge without a master; someone needs to directly teach them the material. He
believes that the normal way of teaching is dangerous, if a student is always being told what to learn
then in some sense they are being trained to think that they cannot figure out what to learn without
having someone actually telling them. What Ranciere sees as dangerous is not that we have things
explained to us, but that we develop attitudes of inferiority and superiority. The issue is we believe
others cannot learn something without us explaining and we think we cannot learn if we are not
explained to. Ranciere wrote, The book is made up of a series of reasoning s designed to make a
student understand some material. But now the schoolmaster opens his mouth to explain the book. He
makes a series of reasoning s in order to explain the series of reasoning s that constitute the book. But

6. How does the king assist Santiago in recognizing omens? When does Santiago use this help?
Omens were a guide for Santiago in his journey. The king assist Santiago in recognizing omens by
giving his two stones for making decision. They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies
yes , and the white no . When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so. Always
ask an objective question (Coelho 32). Afterwards, Santiago used two stones after he was robbed by
the boy. Am I going to find my treasure? he asked (Coelho 44). He had learned that there were certain
things one shouldn t ask about, so as not to flee from one s personal legend. I promised that I would
make my own decisions, he said no to himself (Coelho 44). Santiago is trying to ask the stones for an
answer of his question. Santiago s personal legend is to find treasures. But then the question he had
asked is not objective and it s not a yes or no question. If the stones have given the answer, then it s
end of the journey and it would give it away the ending. 7. What is foreboding? What are two
examples of how foreboding is present within the novel thus far? Foreboding is a subcategory of

Examples Of Santiago A Perfect Man In The Old Man And The Sea
After reading The Old Man and the Sea you have your thoughts about the book. A writer named
William J. Handy wrote a review on The Old Man and the Sea. He said in his quote that basically the
main character named Santiago is perfect. He says that Santiago knows himself, he knows all of his
actions, and he knows what s on the inside of him. This quote is very accurate and is very truthful. In
The Old Man and the Sea Santiago shows that he is a perfect man by his job, his faith, and through the
marlin. Santiago shows how he is a perfect man through a fish he catches. Santiago is on an 84 day
streak of not being able to catch a single fish. One day Santiago decides to go out on a big fishing trip
to try to end his streak. But are you strong enough now for a truly big fish? I think so. And there are
many tricks (Hemingway 3). This quote shows that even though Santiago is on a streak of not being
able to catch any fish, he is ready and prepared to catch a very big fish. While Santiago is stuck in the
ocean he decides to start fishing. After a while of fishing Santiago hooks a very big fish. Santiago
hooks a gigantic Marlin. Now before Santiago hooked this marlin, he had spent a dreadful three days
eating raw dolphin and not being able to catch anything. When he hooked this Marlin he is extremely
weak and tired. After a long fought duel with the marlin, Santiago is able to hook the marlin and attach
it to his

Dr. Iwan s The Bad Doctor
The second strip of page 192 in the comic, The Bad Doctor, highlights persistent stressors that exist in
Dr. Iwan James s life. The scene depicts Dr. James driving a patient, Julie Myers, into town. Prior to
this, Iwan was visiting an elderly patient, Mrs. Flowers, where he accidently knelt in her urine. After
convincing her to visit a hospital he drives away and that is where he notices Julie who requests for
him to drive her into town. Dr. James complies and the page ends with an image of Mrs. Flowers
being wheeled away into an ambulance. The second strip is symbolic not only of Iwan s extraordinary
care for his patients, but also the persistent judgment Iwan has to face as a result of being a great
doctor in the town. The strip exemplifies the constant pressure Iwan feels to improve his patients lives.

being trapped within the town. The interior of the car takes up a lot of space in the panel, which leaves
little room for Iwan and Julie. Iwan has previously stated that he cannot separate his life from the town

Social Mobility In Sport
Throughout generations, social mobility has become something everyone wants to attain in their
lifetime. Through social mobility comes a better and more stable life. There are many ways to achieve
maximum mobility, which include getting a higher education and reducing risk in your life. There are
also a lot of myths towards this concept that has been portrayed by the media and one of the myths is
the social mobility gained by a person playing a sport. Americans in today s world believe that sports
are the path we should take to have full financial and social flexibility. Examples leading to this
conclusion are obvious as we see kids from poor areas escalate their nobility and capital through their
abilities to compete in sports. From the million dollar contracts and endorsement deals, the ideology
behind being an athlete is that your social mobility will rise, but many statistics will prove otherwise.
Although it is possible for athletes to gain revenue and fame, the overall ideology of sports of gaining
maximum social flexibility from being involved in a sport is a myth.
Before continuing about the myths of social mobility and the ideology behind sports, readers need to
be able to understand the true meanings behind these two words. In the book Sport in Society by Jay
Coakley, he begins to define social mobility by stating, Social mobility is regarded as changes in
wealth, education and occupation over a person s lifetime or from one generation to the next (Coakley

The Importance of Education in The Republic by Plato
The great philosopher Plato, speaking through the character of Socrates in his book The Republic,
holds the belief that true and good education is what leads civilizations to prosper. Due to this, he is
very concerned with the issue of education and how it will be addressed in the state that he and his
fellow companions hope to design and build. He talks about how important education is in achieving
this idea of justice and morality. Furthermore, I believe that many of the concepts he brings about
relating to this subject are still very valid today and can be applied worldwide. Plato believes that
education is necessary for the rulers of cities to be effective and that it is the only way to truly
understand and achieve the goal of providing and looking out for the citizens of any state. One of the
reasons Plato finds education such a necessity and regards it so highly is that it is required to even
understand the concept of true justice and being able to distinguish it from injustice. Now although the
major point of this book is to establish a meaning for justice, he believes that education is key and it is
clear that all the people he associates with in the story are well educated high members of society.
Having knowledge on this subject and many others will allow those that eventually become guardians
to tell when something is not just or is at least not beneficial for the well being of the citizens.
Education is also a major factor in understanding the soul and the

Internal Conflict In Macbeth
Conflict happens when two or more people have an disagreement on same topic, or when people clash
in relationship. Warfare is presented as gruesome, unspeakable of hatred and sickening dream, warfare
is often portrayed as bloody and troublesome in literature, because many of the battles involves
violence and death. Hero in many occasions are presented as abnormal, who is very talented, who is
capable to safe people, nevertheless when it comes to failure, the hero is just like an ordinary human,
Shakespeare played and twisted the role of hero, using the character Macbeth. The play Macbeth and

At this point, Macbeth appears to the audience, that he is suffering from inner conflict, we can see this,
because Shakespeare presents his indicate messed up feelings, and his over running lines in the play.
Shakespeare has Macbeth present as cowardice human in this scene, compared to before, because
from this scene Macbeth is expressing all his worries and his fear of the consequences after the murder
of Duncan. The impression of Macbeth to the audience has rapidly changed from loyal gallant, brave
and trustworthy after the greed of ambition ,to become king, to a man that has lost his way, that doesn
t know how to continue on wards. Macbeth stating, we still have judgement here, that we but
teach/bloody instructions which being taught return/ to plague the inventor within the soliloquy it s
showing how concerned and nervous he is, Macbeth s speech is symbolizing his nerves, and his hear
rate within that long enjambment speech, because clearly it s showing us the lines from the speech is
running over each other. The word judgement suggest it s another word for god, this shows Macbeth is
frightened about god judging on him in afterlife, because he knows if he kills the king, he is going
against god, because the king has the divine right, that is given by god, this connotes in the Jacobean
period, people believed a lot in god, for considering decision before doing it, linking with god. This is
why Macbeth is so worried, he is scared, that he may go to hell, because of his ambition to become
king, for he who didn t have the divine right. From the massive changes, we can see Shakespeare is
telling us that there s no perfect hero, hero fails too, everybody makes mistakes even hero

They would believe that mistakes only lead to bad things. I have to somewhat agree with them,
because mistakes do lead to bad things sometimes, but other times, they lead to the most great
discoveries we have ever known. For an example of the opposing opinion, the passage Lost Cities,
Lost Treasure states in paragraph 8 that Schliemann s careless actions erased important clues to Troy s
past. In explanation, since Schliemann only cared about the fame for discovering the lost city of Troy,
the lost city lost its wonder in the drilling and finding process. Many artifacts and important items
were destroyed. That is an example of a mistake leading to a bad thing. Although, the article also does
state that Together, they (Schliemann and Calvert) did prove there had been an ancient city called

Sartre
As stated by Sartre, man has the choice to make all of their decisions freely, but are still condemned to
be free, because we were thrust upon this earth without any choice and forced to exist. Since everyone
was placed on this earth without our choosing, we still have to choose and act freely from any type of
situation we may end up in. Because of that, every choice we make and the resulting circumstance that
may come with it is the result of us being free and having those choices to make. The choice to have a
choice is really the only thing we cannot choose. In his book, Sartre says, Not only are we condemned
to be free because we did not choose to exist, but we are also condemned to be free because we are the

There are no sets of ethics, morals, or eternal values that we can base our entire lives on. The phrases,
I can t or, I must in regards to doing anything since we have the ultimate choice in anything and
nothing is ever truly forced upon us. Sartre believes that we should never put the blame for anything
that we do on anyone else but ourselves. Even though we may believe that the consequence of our
action could be blamed on someone other than us, it always ends up being up to us, whether we want
it to or not. This specific view that Sartre has on the responsibility of our actions being on ourselves
conflicts with the Catholic philosophy. Sartre says that our reasons for picking one action over another
being what God wanted for us or that it was in someone s nature to do so are false. To him, it is our
responsibility. As we live our lives and go through the experiences that we do, we must create our own
meaning. To him, that is the meaning of existence. We are the ones who are held responsible for our
destiny and how we live our lives and shape ourselves is all derived from what we make of ourselves.
On a bit of a different note, Sartre does believe that this freedom of choice that we have can be seen as
somewhat of a curse. This curse is prevalent when dissecting Sartre s phrase, condemned to be

Sometime during 387 AD in Great Britain and the United Kingdom St. Patrick was born. One thing he

One reason St. Patrick is known is his journey of finding god. In the early fourteen hundreds he was
kidnapped by Irish pirates and he had to work as a slave for six years tending sheep. St. Patrick
confessed that he discovered god during his captivity. He prayed a hundred times a day that he would

Dorothy Of The White House
Dorothy Day grew up without a Catholic background, but had a strong will for social justice. She was
a natural pacifist which she expressed even before converting to Catholicism. She worked for the Call
which encouraged her picketing and strikes against social injustices. (57) Later, Dorothy also
protested with women against suffragists in front of the White House and was arrested. During her
time in prison, she got involved with a hunger strike which caused the demands to be met. (82) She
had a strong will for the fairness of others.
Dorothy had lived in an apartment in Chicago for a short time. She became acquainted with
Catholicism in a couple she had met there. After analyzing them, she realized they are not lonely like
she is because they are Catholic. They have a God to love and pray to. (106) Dorothy began to gain
Catholic faith while she was in a common law marriage with an atheist anarchist named Forster. He
disagreed with and discouraged her faith, but this didn t stop her. She found out she was pregnant with
his child and wanted to baptize her in the Catholic church after she was born and later got herself
baptized after working hard to learn religion. Forster left her for this. She chose God over man by this
point. (140) This showed how important her faith was in her life. The Great Depression began and
Dorothy s awareness of the need for Catholic stance grew. It was a time for pressure groups, for direct
action, and radicalism was thriving among all groups

for any reason, other than the production of significant worth for the end client to be inefficient, and
subsequently an objective for prohibition. The theory and mindset communicated by an arrangement
of standards, supplemented by various devices and systems helps for waste abolition, equipped
execution change, stock diminishment, and ideal quality level to the end clients. It is one of the
principal and far reaching ideas that add to organizations everywhere throughout the globe to increase
upper hand and thrive on the global market. (Čiarnienė Vienažindienė, 2015) Introduction: These day
s organizations everywhere throughout the world are confronting with expanding demands from
clients and competitors. Clients have higher desires, and makers can meet these desires by expanding
item s quality, diminishing conveyance time, and reducing costs or a mix of these three categories.
These push business organizations to actualize new generation methodologies to upgrade their
intensity in the worldwide commercial center. Lean is a coordinated arrangement of standards,
practices, apparatuses, and procedures which expect the consumption of a wide range of assets for any
reason other than the making of significant worth for the end client to be inefficient, and in this
manner an objective for avoidance. The end of non quality included exercises decreases expenses and

Summary Of Our Guys Bernard Lefkowitz
Book Review for Our Guys Bernard Lefkowitz The book Our Guys is more of a cultural and
sociological study than just a mere crime book. Bernard provides detailed information about the story
of a young girl known as Leslie who was raped by the Jocks in a town known as Glen ridge in New
Jersey. The story reports that the Jocks had been in trouble since their middle years in school.
However they were considered the star athletes, golden boys in a town that valued competition and
athleticism. The behavior of one of the young men was so inexplicable and revolting; however, he was
never charged or punished for his actions. As Bernard puts it, you would walk in a high school with a
cabinet full of trophies, game balls and other accoutrements, but surprisingly, you would not be able to
find the honor roll list (Lefkowitz, 1997). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They treated girls and women disrespectfully. Under no circumstances would they interact with girls
in a state that showed equality. This is due to the fact that almost all their activities involved sports.
What is more astonishing is that the Jockettes as Bernard calls them tolerated the vile behavior of
these boys. This may be due to the fact that the girls felt that they had no identity or they were less
important in the society. The Glen Ridge boys of the New Jersey, who raped Leslie, were every father
s pride, every mother s pride and in fact they were Our Guys. The town of Glen Ridge emphasized on
qualities such as competitiveness, sense of superiority, physical strength and belligerence. Such
qualities dominated the young boys from their kindergarten to high school graduation. As Lefkowitz
puts it, boys who had such qualities were highly

because she had faith that Friar would never give her poison. He had married the two lovers incognito,

A crime is a violation of established law, but not all crimes have a readily identifiable victim. A
victimless crime is one where an act that violates an established law is committed, without leaving a

usually no victim because the illegal activity was consensually entered into. For this reason, victimless
crimes are often called consensual crimes.

A citizen should be allowed to purchase and smoke marijuana legally, for example, because his or her

4 Elements the Wars Essay
The Wars: Four Elements It was the ancient Greek philosopher, Empedocles, who first established the
four elements: earth, water, air and fire. He also stated that everything in the world is structured by
and rooted in these four elements. However during times of conflict and violence, humans begin to
disturb this harmony. When this happens, the elements stop representing life and start representing a
form of destruction. Throughout Robert Ross s journey in The Wars, Timothy Findley exemplifies this
theory by displaying the four elements in two diverse ways: benevolent and harmful. Earth is said to
be the feminine element. It is perceived to be nurturing, stable, and full of endurance. The planet itself
is a ball of life in which one is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This comes to no surprise. Like water, life is subject to change. Like water, life is shaped by the places
it exists in: the earth, the environment, and the ecosystems. Throughout his voyage, Robert Ross finds
himself in the presence of snow numerous times. For instance, it snows during Rowena s funeral, All
the time the minister eulogized and all the time they prayed, it snowed (Finley 18) Robert also stands
in the snow at the train station, much like Mrs. Ross let the snow beat down on her face. Each of these
events marks a point of permanent change. Everyone is able to imagine the scene where the hero looks
down and the town below him is awash in flames. Fire is the agent of destruction; symbolism of both
chaos and war. Burning everything in its path, it brings nothing but devastation. Fire storms raged
along the front. Men were exploded where they stood blown apart by the combustion (Findley 137)
Staying true to this depiction, fire takes the lives of many during the war, including Robert himself.
While trying to save the horses, Roberts get caught in the barn and the roof went up in seconds like a
tinder box. (Finley 212) Although the flames claimed the lives of many, at times they also helped give
Robert peace at mind. During Robert s stay at Desole, he receives his kit bag which includes a picture
of Rowena. He decides to burn the picture and it is

Crime And The Crime Rates
Many say that a person is a product of their environment and studies show that it is true. When living
in poverty, one steals to have what they physically want. Many factors contribute to those living in
poverty, such as unemployment, low or no education, race, and age median. Poverty and crime are
most related to those who reside in the slums, ghettos and hoods. Various crimes committed in poverty
areas may be organized crimes. The main focus of these organized crimes is drugs and drug
trafficking. A lot of areas remain in poverty because businesses do not want to build in the area
because of the crime rates. Children who are raised around violence and crime tend to commit more
crimes than those who do not see it growing up. Race is an issue when it comes to the punishment and
sentencing of the crime(s). When working in corporate, one embezzles and steals to get the money that
they want, but yet you do not hear too much about the white collar crimes. Another crime that is also
committed, but is rarely talked about is corporate crimes committed on us. The media plays a big part
in what we hear about because the human is fascinated by murder and crime so that is what is shown.
Literature Review
Many authors show that there are many similar factors that constitute to the high crime rates. Multiple
articles demonstrate how living in poverty mixed with low or no education, and being unemployed,
but fails to mention the greed and those factors in the white collar and corporate

Bojack Horseman is an adult cartoon comedy that follows the life of the once been sitcom star and
titular character Bojack Horseman. The show opens up on a scene from his old sitcom called Horsin
Around before cutting to reality where Bojack is at an interview while drunk. This entire bit sets up a
main theme of the show, the segregation of Hollywood glamor and reality. The interview only furthers
this with Bojack attributing the shows wide success to, People coming home after a long day of life
kicking them in the urethra to watch a show about good, likable, people who love each other, where
no matter what happens after thirty minutes everything is going to turn out okay . In contrast to this

According to (Homa Sheikh Sajadieh, 2013) Waste elimination is one of the most effective ways to
increase the profitability of any business. Processes either add value or waste to the production of a
good or service. The seven wastes originated in Japan, where waste is known as muda . The seven
wastes is a tool to further categorize muda and was originally developed by Toyota s Chief Engineer
Taiichi Ohno as the core of the Toyota Production System, also known as Lean Manufacturing. To
eliminate waste, it is important to understand exactly what waste is and where it exists. While
products significantly differ between factories, the typical wastes found in manufacturing
environments are quite similar. For each waste, there is a strategy to reduce or eliminate its effect on a
company, thereby improving overall performance and quality .
The seven types of waste are:
1. Waste from overproduction.
2. Waste from waiting times.
3. Waste from transportation and handling.
4. Waste related to useless and excess inventories.
5. Waste in the production process.
6. Useless motions.
7. Waste from scrap and defects.
According to (Okpala, 2014) In Lean Production System, waste (which is referred to as muda in
Japan) is described as anything that destroys resources and does not add any value to the customer s
requirements. This is because manufacturing waste is the application of resources like raw materials,
labor, equipment, or machines over and above what is

Strategic Bombing During World War II
World War II began September 1, 1939, the day after Germany invaded neutral Poland. Great Britain
and France declared war on Germany the two days after the invasion. Throughout the war the
bombing of major cities was practiced by both the allies and axis powers. The British and Americans
came up with a more accurate and effective bombing tactics. This tactic is called strategic bombing .
Strategic bombing was sustained aerial attack on railways, harbours, cities, workers housing, and
industrial districts in enemy territory The United States and Britain had justified reasons for the aerial
bombings of German and Japanese cities as they were trying to protect their people from a ruthless
dictator. Before the British began bombing the Germans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

March 9, 1945 the conditions were perfect. Three hundred B29 bombers dropped nearly 500,000
cylinders of napalm and petroleum jelly on the most densely populated areas of Tokyo (Carney). This
raid also known as Operation Meetinghouse is considered the most destructive bombing ever. If the
Allies had lost the war they would have had severe repercussions and would have been charged with

  • 3. The Necessity of Personal Responsibility Essay Personal responsibility may be perceived in many ways, but it is imperative to understand the relevance of why it must begin with our self. First, one will never develop an attitude of responsibility if they always look for others to complete their task. It is a necessity that one has personal discipline or their efforts to be responsible will prove to be fruitless. Second, being responsible yields great rewards and acting responsible is a clear sign of maturity. A responsible individual looks to no one but self and no matter what the outcome; they are willing to stand by their decisions. (Maltby 2009), Personal responsibility is concerned with people taking individual accountability for their decisions and actions, together with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personal responsibility may yield many rewards. For example, Mary s entry level position at Trump Towers was administrative assistant. During a period of one year, Mary validated her worth by working overtime and always volunteering to help with other projects. As Mary continued to flourish in completing her assignments, she was elevated from administrative assistant to executive director of the accounting department. There are many levels of maturity, but maturity is a process that students develop over a period of time. Consequently, the student that matures quickly is likely to initiate an educational plan that will increase their academic success. One preliminary plan that a student can design to achieve academic success is goal setting. Goal setting allows the student to define their academic goals and to devise a plan that will accommodate their collegiate career. One way to make goals effective is to examine them up close. (Ellis, p. 70,2011) Prior to this point we established several factors to confirm the necessity of personal responsibility, but here we will interject effective strategies that a student must use to generate success in their chosen field of study. Research and observation reveals that the most successful students are accountable, but also have a strong determination to apply practical concepts to achieve their academic goals. The successful student operates in congruence between faculty and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Does L1 Support Literacy In L2 In this paper, I will discuss definitions of literacy, review research related to the transfer of literacy skills, and suggest practical applications of research findings of ways Linguistics (L1) support literacy in L2 for individuals learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Further, I will explore instructional practices implemented as L1 is transferred to L2 knowledge base. As learning practices for L1 and L2 are outlined, cognates of L2 will be demonstrated in this paper for further understanding. Literacy in L1 can support literacy in L2 in a variety of ways. Many researchers and practitioners in ESL/Bilingual Education or ESL/BE are aware of research evidence which supports such transfer, but research is not always applied to practice. According to Roberts (1994), literacy in L1 supports L2 by being able to transfer the teachings to L2 students. Research shows that knowledge of alphabets and awareness of phonological can an are strong predictors of literacy development in children being successful (Ford, K.2005). Lee Schaller s (1997) quantitative study examined the relationships between ELL students who demonstrated a level of proficiency compared to ELL students basic reading skills. The study (1997) tested two hypotheses to check reliability and validity; the hypotheses were examined from the following: (1) a foundation of language proficiency showed learners with below average levels in L2 proficiency showed little relationship between their L1 and L2 reading ability whereas learners with above average in L2 proficiency demonstrated a positive relationship between their L1 and L2 reading abilities.(b) The benefit of L2 proficiency was higher than the benefit of L1 reading ability in predicting L2 reading ability. In addition, Schaller Lee s (1997) study showed a correlation between the two hypotheses. For example, when L2 learners obtain previous knowledge from L1 experiences, their reading skills can potentially improve as information is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Speech Recognition CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION People use calculators to perform calculations that have a numeric keypad to input the data and a display to get the result. To overcome this, speech signal can be used to input the data and the result is an audio signal. Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It ranges from 90 Hz to 7,000 Hz. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency from 85 to 180 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. Thus, the fundamental frequency of most speech falls below the bottom of the voice frequency band as defined above. Speech recognition is a process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generally the more traing, the higher the perfromance of the system for virtually any task. The reference pattern are sensitive to the speaking environment and transmission characteristics of the medium used to create the speech, this is because the speech spectral characteristics are affected by transmission and background noise. No speech specific knowledge is used explicitly in the system; hence the method is relatively in sensitive to choice of vocabulary words, task, syntax, and task semantics. The computational load for both pattern training and pattern classification is generally linearly proportional to the number of patterns being trained or recognized. Hence computation for a large number of sound classes could and often does become prohibitive. Because the system is insensitive to sound class, the basic techniques are applicable to a wide range of speech sounds, including phrases, whole words and sub word units. The basic set of techniques developed for one sound class (e.g., words) can generally be directly applied to different sound classes (e.g., subword units) with little or no modifications to the ... Sorry Not Sorry By Rowan Blanchard Summary As evidenced by Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, and Rowan Blanchard s essay about white feminism, Rowan Blanchard is both ambitious and honorable in her ways of learning to stop apologizing when she does not live up to societal norms for a teenage girl and starting to slowly become a young feminist icon. Rowan is a 14 year old actress in the Disney Channel show Girl Meets World , in addition, she is also a writer and activist. Yet from reading any of her writing, she is far beyond her years and sounds like a woman with college level knowledge. She is an intersectional feminist, i.e., feminism that includes women of all colors, races, sexuality, and gender spectrum identities and the oppression they face in society. For such a small girl, she is not afraid to voice her opinions and educate others on important women s rights topics, shying away from the white feminism becoming more mainstream daily. In Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, Blanchard wrote In order to quit apologizing to other people, you must first and foremost learn to stop apologizing for being yourself to yourself. • 17. Immigration About Immigration Multitudes of people every year try to illegally cross the border between Mexico and the United States. They do this in the hope that if they become citizens, they will gain the freedom and opportunities Americans have. This is what Turcios family was aiming for. This family originates from the Honduran countryside, this family had minimal paying jobs, so they saved up enough money to be illegally smuggled into the US border in 1994. They considered returning back, but after a hurricane that struck Honduras, they remained. They tried to smuggle their children but were only able to get some of them to the US. The author is trying to say that immigration is a hard process and that the government does not seem to care. The author is trying to say that one may have big dreams, but turning it into reality is a whole other story. In addition, if someone truly believes in their dreams, then their own lives will not be as essential to them. Immigration is not necessarily a walk in the park, only we don t perceive this way because we have never walked in their shoes. Other than the fact that an immigrant may feel inferior to others, they are not treated equally by the government. Even though immigration seems fine with temporary protection, technically they are not citizens. Death and Dying in DeLillo s White Noise Essay Death and Dying in DeLillo s White Noise Among other things, Don DeLillo seems completely preoccupied with death and the arduous task of living with the knowledge of death in his novel White Noise. Acceptance of our finite, fragile existence over time is certainly not a phenomenon unique to a single civilization or historical era. Rather than discuss the inescapable mortality that connects all humankind with broad, generalized strokes, DeLillo is concerned with the particular (peculiar?) late Twentieth Century cultural and psychological mechanisms that attempt to define, recast, or obscure the relationship between the self and death. Doctors become modern high priests, the only member of society capable of deciphering the network of symbols, an entire awesome technology wrested from the gods (142). Death, in many respects, takes on a life of its own, distinct from any particular individual; it becomes an observable, quantifiable phenomenon. This might account for the almost perverse fascination with television disasters, death existing at a safe distance. Every disaster made us wish for more... (64). Unlike human beings, however, death is never the sum total of its data. Dylar fails to fulfill it promise because death is larger, more accommodating, than any technology we can create. It is akin to the nebulous mass growing inside Jack; it has no definite shape or form , but death has a presence in the novel as a sound, white noise. It is my intent to put forth a moral justification of the ideals behind capitalism. Many economists have debated that capitalism is practical because it allows each individual to align their actions with their own thoughts, instead of acting under the demands of bureaucrats. A multitude of minds attack each problem under capitalism. The successful thinkers thrive because they are able to see the opportunities that the other thinkers do not. He explains how people are too dependent on others in order to obtain knowledge which they can do on their own. *Upon reading his argument, I begin to agree with his view on our education system and how it s dulling the minds of individuals. * In the first chapter, An Intellectual Adventure, Ranciere believes that most individuals think they cannot gain knowledge without a master; someone needs to directly teach them the material. He believes that the normal way of teaching is dangerous, if a student is always being told what to learn then in some sense they are being trained to think that they cannot figure out what to learn without having someone actually telling them. What Ranciere sees as dangerous is not that we have things explained to us, but that we develop attitudes of inferiority and superiority. The issue is we believe others cannot learn something without us explaining and we think we cannot learn if we are not explained to. Handy wrote a review on The Old Man and the Sea. He said in his quote that basically the main character named Santiago is perfect. He says that Santiago knows himself, he knows all of his actions, and he knows what s on the inside of him. This quote is very accurate and is very truthful. In The Old Man and the Sea Santiago shows that he is a perfect man by his job, his faith, and through the marlin. Santiago shows how he is a perfect man through a fish he catches. Santiago is on an 84 day streak of not being able to catch a single fish. One day Santiago decides to go out on a big fishing trip to try to end his streak. But are you strong enough now for a truly big fish? I think so. And there are many tricks (Hemingway 3). This quote shows that even though Santiago is on a streak of not being able to catch any fish, he is ready and prepared to catch a very big fish. While Santiago is stuck in the ocean he decides to start fishing. After a while of fishing Santiago hooks a very big fish. Santiago hooks a gigantic Marlin. Now before Santiago hooked this marlin, he had spent a dreadful three days eating raw dolphin and not being able to catch anything. When he hooked this Marlin he is extremely weak and tired. There are many ways to achieve maximum mobility, which include getting a higher education and reducing risk in your life. There are also a lot of myths towards this concept that has been portrayed by the media and one of the myths is the social mobility gained by a person playing a sport. Americans in today s world believe that sports are the path we should take to have full financial and social flexibility. From the million dollar contracts and endorsement deals, the ideology behind being an athlete is that your social mobility will rise, but many statistics will prove otherwise. Although it is possible for athletes to gain revenue and fame, the overall ideology of sports of gaining maximum social flexibility from being involved in a sport is a myth. Before continuing about the myths of social mobility and the ideology behind sports, readers need to be able to understand the true meanings behind these two words. The Importance of Education in The Republic by Plato The great philosopher Plato, speaking through the character of Socrates in his book The Republic, holds the belief that true and good education is what leads civilizations to prosper. Due to this, he is very concerned with the issue of education and how it will be addressed in the state that he and his fellow companions hope to design and build. He talks about how important education is in achieving this idea of justice and morality. Furthermore, I believe that many of the concepts he brings about relating to this subject are still very valid today and can be applied worldwide. Plato believes that education is necessary for the rulers of cities to be effective and that it is the only way to truly understand and achieve the goal of providing and looking out for the citizens of any state. One of the reasons Plato finds education such a necessity and regards it so highly is that it is required to even understand the concept of true justice and being able to distinguish it from injustice. Now although the major point of this book is to establish a meaning for justice, he believes that education is key and it is clear that all the people he associates with in the story are well educated high members of society. Because of that, every choice we make and the resulting circumstance that may come with it is the result of us being free and having those choices to make. Even though we may believe that the consequence of our action could be blamed on someone other than us, it always ends up being up to us, whether we want it to or not. This specific view that Sartre has on the responsibility of our actions being on ourselves conflicts with the Catholic philosophy. Sartre says that our reasons for picking one action over another being what God wanted for us or that it was in someone s nature to do so are false. To him, it is our responsibility. He also stated that everything in the world is structured by and rooted in these four elements. However during times of conflict and violence, humans begin to disturb this harmony. When this happens, the elements stop representing life and start representing a form of destruction. Throughout Robert Ross s journey in The Wars, Timothy Findley exemplifies this theory by displaying the four elements in two diverse ways: benevolent and harmful. Fire is the agent of destruction; symbolism of both chaos and war. Burning everything in its path, it brings nothing but devastation. Fire storms raged along the front. Poverty and crime are most related to those who reside in the slums, ghettos and hoods. Various crimes committed in poverty areas may be organized crimes.
