Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in New Jersey and grew up in Long Island. Unlike many artists, she did not have an artistic background or interest as a child. She began studying art in college, starting with painting but switching to photography. After graduating in 1976, she moved to New York City and began taking self-portraits that used her appearance to comment on social issues and critique media representations of women. Sherman developed a signature style through diverse series that questioned cultural roles and norms.
12VA Theory - Barbara Kruger
Barbara Kruger is an American collage artist known for her critiques of feminism, consumerism, and social power structures. She creates artwork using found photographs overlaid with bold, confrontational text. The text is designed to provoke viewers into reconsidering their perceptions on issues like gender, class, and individual autonomy. Much of her work explores how patriarchal social norms objectify women's bodies and how consumerism facilitates the commodification of human relationships.
12VA Theory - Julie Rrap
Julie Rrap is an Australian artist born in 1950 in Lismore, NSW. She changed her surname from Parr to Rrap in reverse to establish her own career separate from her brother, the controversial artist Mike Parr. Rrap is known for her body-focused performance art and other mediums like photography, painting, sculpture, and video. Between 1986-1994 she lived in France and Belgium where she exhibited widely, broadening her international exposure. Major retrospectives of her work were held at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in 1995 and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney in 2007.

She enjoys using ordinary elements in her photos and combining them to tell various stories and give personalities. Her works are dream-like, ethereal, highly polished and skillfully combine multiple layers of photos. She explores themes of childhood, solitude and consumerism through symbolism, angles, perspective and color.

Bill Viola is an internationally renowned American video artist born in 1952. He has helped establish video as a vital contemporary art form and has created video installations for over 40 years that employ the latest technologies. Viola's installations immerse viewers in images and sounds to explore universal human experiences like birth, death, and the unfolding of consciousness. He draws from both Eastern and Western spiritual traditions in his work to communicate in a direct, yet personal way that allows for different viewer interpretations.
