Sorolta Ban is a Hungarian photo manipulation artist who creates dreamlike and ethereal digital compositions using ordinary elements combined in various ways to tell stories and evoke different meanings for different viewers. Originally a jewellery designer, she became passionate about digital photo manipulation and now shoots with a basic point and shoot camera, spending hours to days manipulating her images layer by layer in Photoshop to express themes of childhood, solitude, and consumerism through symbolism, angles, perspective, color, and texture.

“I was born in 1982 in Budapest, Hungary. Originally I’m a jewellery designer,
later I discovered digital photo manipulation and it became my passion and main
activity. I like using ordinary elements and by combining them, I can give them
various stories, personalities. I hope that the meanings of my pictures are never
too limited, are open in some way, each viewer can transform them into a
personal aspect. I’m not so good at talking about myself, I prefer to let the
pictures talk.”

7. PRACTICE
Her works are dream-like, ethereal, highly polished and skilfully combined. Surprisingly, she shoots on
only a 5 mega pixel point and shoot camera. Using then only Photoshop, she works on a picture from a
few hours to a couple of days long, and uses up to 50-100 different layers for one picture. Ban uses
symbolism, angles, perspective, colour, texture to express themes of childhood, solitude and
consumerism among others.
