This document discusses oil and natural gas deposits, including their formation, current usage and reserves, methods of extraction, and alternative natural gas sources. It notes that petroleum is a nonrenewable resource, and that over 1 trillion barrels of oil have been consumed worldwide so far, with 1.2 trillion barrels estimated to remain. The United States consumes about 25% of the oil used globally each year. Natural gas presently supplies 25% of US energy needs, with 200 trillion cubic feet in reserves and 20 trillion cubic feet consumed annually. Enhanced oil recovery techniques beyond primary pumping are also outlined.
