Partition Action Research Paper
d. The Parties to a Partition Action
The parties that must be included in a petition to partition are every joint tenant or tenant in common
who holds an interest in the property, and their spouses. Life tenants, judgment creditors, mortgage
holders, and other lien creditors should also be brought into the proceeding, even though they are not
required parties.
A life tenant in the property may join in the partition proceeding and upon a partition sale will receive
the fair market value of his or her interest. This sum will be paid either in an annual amount or a lump
sum paid out of the proceeds, based on a value of the share of interest in the land calculated in relation
to his or her estimated life expectancy.
Joint tenants or tenants in common may still obtain partition, in kind or by sale, even with the
existence of a lien. If an actual partition is successful, any existing liens will follow the share allocated
to the co tenant who is the debtor and the other tenants will be able to hold their interest
unencumbered by the previously applied liens. If the partition occurs by forced judicial sale then the
purchaser will take the property subject to the liens. The better practice is to make creditors,
mortgagees, or lien holders a party to the petition proceeding so that upon sale of the land the liens
will be extinguished and satisfied ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Substantial injury is defined as when the fair market value of each share after partition in kind would
be materially less than if the property was sold as a whole or if the in kind division would result in
material impairment of the rights of a co tenant. North Carolina courts, unlike many other states, will
only evaluate pecuniary interest and economic factors alone where deciding which type of partition is

The Reluctant Security Guard
The Reluctant Security Guard
1. Relevant Facts
1.1. David Tuff was a security guard at the Blue Mountain Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
1.2 As part of his job training, it was necessary for him to get a security guard license, requiring him to
obey the Security Officer s Manual, which included the following statement: If a serious accident or
illegal behavior should occur on the premises of the licensee, it shall be the responsibility of the
licensee to notify the appropriate police department immediately .
1.3. Fourteen months after Tuff joined the company, Blue Mountain issued new rules of pro¬cedure,
demanding the security guards to order and escort intoxicated per¬sons, including persons driving
under the in¬fluence of alcohol, off its parking lots and onto the public roads.
1.4. Tuff complained to his superiors some¬times several times a day using abusive language in
denouncing the rules because he believed his license could be revoked once he fails to report illegal
behavior.
1.5. Manuel Hernandez, His immediate supervisor, told him that if any such situation arose he should
contact the su¬pervisor in charge, who will further make a decision and also that he needs not to
worry about potential scenarios but about his paycheck.
1.6. Tuff then contacted a volunteer organiza¬tion working to prevent drunk driving, whose
representatives approached his supervisors, opposing the policy

How Steinbeck Uses Two of His Characters to Explore the Role of Power in Of Mice and Men by
John Steinbeck The two characters that I have chosen to examine for exploring the role of power in
the novel are Slim and Curley. Slim is a highly skilled mule driver and the acknowledged prince of the
ranch. Slim is both respected and admired by all of the men he works with. In the book it says that
Slim s opinion in law and that Slim don t need to wear no high heeled boots to say that he is superior
over the others because that s how the men see him anyway. He is seen as the leader in the bunkhouse
because his word is final, for example, Slim has the last word in the situation of whether to shoot ...

Slim has natural power; his authority is gained through respect of the other men. They come to him
voluntarily to ask his advice and to talk to him. Slim s height is also used to reflect his status and
shows us that even though he could have physical power over the men, he chooses not to, instead he
respects them. Slim is seen as the leader by the men even though it seems that he is equal to them. The
fact that Slim is very modest seems to make him even more powerful. The relationship between Slim
and the men is symbiotic because he gives them as much respect as they give to him. Carlson stepped
back to let Slim precede him. This shows that the men are willing to let Slim go before them, because
of the relationship that they have, and it appears to happen in a natural way. There is a big difference
in the way that Slim and Curley use their power. Slim does not abuse the power he has, unlike Curley.
Slim if fairly equal to the other men as he wears the same type of clothes, works hard and sleeps in the
bunkhouse along with them. I think that this makes the men respect him more as he is one of them and
does not see himself as superior to them. Curley wears boots to make himself stand out and does not
work like the others do. He also sleeps in the house away from the other men and this makes him think
that he is superior over the other men.

Malcolm X Civil Rights Activist
Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little was a civil rights activist along with being the voice of the Black
Muslim religious group. Malcolm was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the fourth
child of eight siblings born to Earl and Louise Little. While Louise was a stay at home mom or
housewife, Earl Little was a preacher along with being an active member of the Universal Negro
Improvement Association. He was also a big supporter of Marcus Garvey, an advocate of the Black
Nationalism and Pan African movements. As a result of Mr. Little being a civil rights activist, his
family was punished for it with constant harassment from many white supremacist groups such as the
Klu Klux Klan. The harassment the family endured forced them to move many times. In 1926 Mr.
little moved his family from Nebraska to Wisconsin and then in 1928, moved to Lansing, Michigan. In
1931 while living in Michigan, Earl Little was found dead lying across streetcar tracks. Malcolm s
family strongly believed it was a murder but the police ruled Earl s death an accident. Earl s ... Show

Laertes Loyalty In Hamlet
What is loyalty to you? Is it keeping a secret that could possibly destroy a relationship? In
William Shakespeare s Hamlet, there are many different ideas as to what loyalty is interpreted.
Readers can explore ideas and connections based on family, love and friendship.
These three main ideas results the tragedy of this play. The character of Hamlet and Laertes express
their loyalty that changes the nature of their relationship with others and displays its positive and
negative outcomes.
Throughout the play, loyalty is first seen through family. It is centered between Hamlet and the ghost
also known as his father. They first encounter in Act 1 Scene V as he appears in front of Hamlet and
retells the story of his murder. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the two characters both show their loyalty to those around them. Hamlet s close friend Horatio
shows his loyalty to the young prince. Throughout the play Horatio is the only one that stayed true to
Hamlet while others betrayed him. As readers our perspective of Hamlet is he is insane, bitter and
immature. However the character of Horatio expresses that whatever the situation may be he will be
always present for his friend. In Act V Scene 2, the character of Hamlet is slain by
Laertes. In this scene Horatio says Never believe it. I am more an antique Roman than a Dane.
Here s yet some liquor left. (V.2. 336 338) In this scene, Horatio sees Hamlet wounded with the
poison sword and Horatio offers to the prince that he too will commit suicide. However,
Hamlet shows his loyalty to Horatio as he tells him that he should live and tell his story. Hamlet shows
his gratitude to his beloved friend by leaving him the task of finding words to clear his name.
Therefore both Horatio and Hamlet demonstrate loyalty to each other. In addition
Laertes shows loyalty to Hamlets family but not to him as an individual. Laertes is loyal

The Effectiveness of William Shakespeare s Use of...
The Effectiveness of William Shakespeare s Use of Supernatural in the Final Act of Richard III
Richard III was written by William Shakespeare and tells the story of how Richard III wants to
become king and does everything in his power to get there by assassinating members of his family to
do so, for example, the Duke of Clarence, Lord Hastings, Lady Anne, Lord Rivers, the Duke of
Buckingham, Henry VI, Prince Edward, Prince Edward V and Prince Richard. The last Act contains
many supernatural elements such as ghosts of the people Richard III has murdered or got killed and
curses, for example, Buckingham remembering Margaret s curse, prophecies and dreams, a message
from the supernatural from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By making the play more theatrical, the audience can see the individual personalities of the characters.
For example Richard seen as a belligerent, vicious, vulgar, hideous person who wants to prove that he
is a villain.
One example of the paranormal in Act V is when Richard refers to how the ghosts make him feel
responsible: O coward conscience, how dost thou afflict me but he is able to see it differently. Also
this recalls Margaret s curse: the worm of conscience still begnaw thy soul, which meant that the
centre of his conscience would incessantly affect his soul forever. This shows that Richard is feeling
guilty, he fears the ghostly vengeance of all the people he had killed and that the curses made by the
ghosts will affect him when he goes to war. Richard is able to calm himself down: What do I fear? this
proves that he has no feeling for anyone, no conscience and is going to prove that he is a villain
despite his earlier attack of remorse.
Here, Shakespeare s use of supernatural is effectual because it reminds us of the members of family
killed by Richard to become king and is more dramatic. It is more dramatic because it shows Richard
deserves to die as his punishment and people will be punished if they commit vile things. This makes
the scene look more theatrical and stimulating, this enables the audience to see what is going on inside
Richard s head and whether we

How Did Henry Ford Impact Society
Introducing the man who practically built America. Henry Ford was an automobile manufacturer who,
in 1903, established the Ford Motor Company. In 1908, he created the Ford Model T car in the shed
located behind his home. This car was the most popular car of all time due to its cheap prices
(compared to early automobiles) and it s constant availability (Ford Model T). Henry Ford
transformed the automobile from an invention to an innovation and it continues to affect our lives
today. When the Model T was introduced to the people of America, it revolutionized literature forever.
The idea of an affordable car for the everyday man captured the imagination of authors and
filmmakers. Throughout the 1920s, the Model T was featured in dozens of movies, television series,
and books. Even today, thousands of pieces are shown to have cars originate from this American
innovation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a child, Ford was passionate about disassembling and then reassembling timepieces. In 1879, Ford
was an apprentice machinist, where he would operate and service several steam engines. Nine years
later, he became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company and finally had enough time and
money to experiment with gasoline engines. He invented the Ford Quadricycle, test drove it, and then
began improvements. These improvements led to the making of the Model T, introduced on October 1,
1908. The Model T was just a more basic version of what cars are driven today: steering wheel on the
left, enclosed engine and transmission, four cylinders cast in a solid block. All of this was just eight
hundred and twenty five dollars, which would be twenty two thousand, four hundred and seventy
dollars today. The price dropped every year, so the Model T soon became the best selling vehicle in

Oodgeroo
To our Fathers Fathers, the pain, the sorrow; To our Children s Children, the glad tomorrow. . Hi, I m
Zane Goodridge and today I ll be analysing the song of hope and revealing the messages within it .
This poem, by Aboriginal poet Kath Walker, also known as Oodgeroo, is about how she believes that
things are becoming better, and for this trend to continue, Aborigines and Australians alike need to
trust each other. In order for you to understand the rest of the speech, I will now present a reading of
the poem. Look up, my people; the Dawn is breaking; The world is waking; To a bright new day.

After continued reading of the poem it became clear that Kath had a much more powerful message
hidden behind the explicit meaning of the poem. She feels that the past is yet to be properly amended
and that it needs to be before the Aborigines and European descendants can move forward. This is
reflected especially in Stanzas 2 and 3. In stanza 2 the lines Now brood no more and The hope
assigned you shows that there was clearly some kind of destiny that was less then looked forward to in
each aboriginal individual. In Stanza 3, there is a much larger presence of this message. With lines like
So long we waited; bound and frustrated; till hate be hated; and caste deposed. Provides an insight into
Aboriginies having to wait in pain until something was done about their lives and opportunities.
Though it seems that Oodgeroo does believe that things are getting better, she acknowledges that the
aboriginal people were not always the best treated and that she believes that things should be formally
amended before things can become better for all, regardless of

Different Phases Of Solar And Magnetic Activity Cycles
CHAPTER 2 Cosmic Ray Modulation during Different Phases of Solar and Magnetic Activity Cycles
INTRODUCTION Cosmic rays are modulated as they traverse into the heliosphere. Measurements
have shown that cosmic ray intensity varies on different time scales. On a longer time scale, the
cosmic ray intensity variations in anti phase with solar activity having ≈ 11 year cyclicity is well
known and studied extensively (e.g., see Venkatesan and Badruddin, 1990; Storini et al., 1995;
Usoskin et al., 1998; Mavromichalaki et al., 1998; Kane, 2003; Sabbah and Rybansky, 2006; Ma et al.,
2009; Chaudhary et al., 2011; Kudela, 2012). In addition, the ≈ 22 year modulation cycle in cosmic
ray flux due to solar magnetic field polarity reversals is observed and modeled (e.g., Jokipii and
Thomas, 1981; Potgieter and Moraal, 1985; Webber and Lockwood, 1988; Potgieter, 1995; Cliver and
Ling, 2001; Laurenza et al., 2012). However, in order to understand these phenomena, it is important
to understand how cosmic ray transport and propagation vary with the solar activity and solar
magnetic polarity (Heber, 2013). Although sunspots have been used as a convenient index of solar
activity, anti correlated with cosmic ray intensity, it has been recognized that they are not intrinsically
related to the problem of solar modulation of cosmic rays. However, the diffusion coefficient changes
during ≈ 11 year sunspot cycle, being smaller during periods of high solar activity than

Collaboration And Introversion
Abstract This analysis examines the differences of introversion and extroversion and how many
people place negative connotations associated with being an introvert. Also examined is the
importance of introverts in society and how powerful introverts really are despite what many believe.
Introduction Section How will you spend your Friday night? Will you spend it in a crowded restaurant
or on the couch reading a good book? Maybe your answer to this question is obvious to you or you
might find yourself somewhere in the middle between the two. Whatever your answer may be, the
origin of your feelings may lie in how your brain responds to day to day activities. Depending on if

According to Organizational Behavior: Emerging Knowledge, Global Reality, Introverts do not
necessarily lack social skills. Rather, they are more inclined to direct their interests to ideas than to
social events. Introverts feel quite comfortable being alone, whereas extroverts do not (McShane Von
Glinow, 2015, p. 41). The Roosevelt s, Franklin and Eleanor, were two of the most influential people
in American history during the twentieth century. However, when it comes to their leadership styles,
they are completely different. Franklin was what people would call an extrovert. He was outgoing, he
didn t mind big crowds, and loved mingling with others. On the other hand, Eleanor was what most
people would call an introvert. She was very timid and shy, she didn t like crowds, nor did she like
socializing or mingling much with others. Over time; however, Eleanor grew to like social events and
often spoke out publically proclaiming her beliefs and opinions on political issues of the time. In the
third part of Quiet: The Power of Introverts, Cain informs readers that despite what Western cultures
believe, not all cultures share the same way of thinking in regards to extroversion. Extroversion is not
necessarily an ideal characteristic in cultures such as China or Japan, for example.

Era Of Good Feelings Dbq
The Era of Good Feelings (1816 1825) marked a political period during president James Monroe s
presidency in which the disappearance of the Federalists enabled the republicans to govern in a spirit
of harmony. This period is titled so due to nationalism, decrease in political strife, and economic
growth post War of 1812. Although, Monroe managed to achieve his goal of national unity within the
country, there were still issues that had appeared during his presidency. Debates over tariffs, foreign
affairs, the national bank, and slave issues became much more evident during this time period.

much as they did over American individualism and nationalism. ... Show more content on

Its purpose was to even out the amount of slaveholding state representatives in congress. To do this,
Maine became free slave state and Missouri was created as a slave state. Because of this, all slavery
was extinguished in the northern states, but available in the southern states (Document E). Congress
also established a line across the southern border of Missouri to distinguish the northern states from
the southern states. All states north of this line must be free of slavery and those south of the line will
contain slavery. This Compromise lasted for roughly 35 years until slavery was completely abolished
in America. The Tariff of 1816 was a protective tariff that helped American businesses by taxing
British goods that were often cheaper and of higher quality than American goods. This ultimately
boosted the sales of American products and was very successful in protecting industries. Most of the
U.S. Representatives voted for the the Tariff because they understood that they must protect American
manufacturing (Document F). Those who opposed the tariff feared that New England s commercial

Balance Sheet and Goodwill
Goodwill is an intangible asset, probably the most intangible of all intangible assets, hard to measure
and even more difficult to account for. Goodwill today constitutes a much larger part of acquisition
prices than it did previously, resulting in a much greater impact on financial statements.
During the twentieth century the concept of goodwill has changed significantly. In the earlier days
goodwill was thought of as the good and valuable relationships of a proprietor of a business with his
customers. The present concept is broader in that it encompasses many more intangible economic
factors of a business enterprise and accountants now consider that goodwill results from the evaluation
of the earning power of a business by investors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is no wonder that managements, in order to avoid this reduction in reportable earnings, frequently
opt to use the pooling of interest method when they complete a merger. Since no goodwill is created,
over eager managers are able to pay outrageous prices for acquisitions with little or no accountability
on the balance sheet. Since it makes no sense to have two different ways for accounting for a merger,
the FASB decided they should eliminate the pooling of interest method and force all transactions to be
done via the purchase method. Executives and politicians claimed this will significantly reduce the
number of mergers since the new standards would cause reportable earnings to drop as soon as a
company had completed an acquisition. As a concession, the FASB will no longer require goodwill to
be written off unless the assets became impaired (which means it becomes clear that the goodwill is
not worth what the company paid for it).
The FASB s six members unanimously approved two new accounting standards on Friday July 23,
2001. Financial Accounting Statement 141 will eliminate the pooling of interest method for booking
mergers. The method had been popular with dealmakers because it allowed companies to do deals at a
premium without marking up their assets. These markups inflate the size of future amortization
expenses and depressed reported earnings, supporters of pooling said. The FASB also passed Financial
Accounting Statement 142 a closely related standard

Analysis Of Jeannette Walls The Glass Castle
Well known book writer, Jeannette Walls, in her book, The Glass Castle, describes the dramatic mood
altering effects of her struggles through life. Jeannette s purpose is to show the readers her struggles
throughout her childhood. She creates a dramatic tone in order to convey to her readers that you can
make your dreams come true. In The Glass Castle, Jeannette uses powerful diction, very descriptive
imagery, and symbolism. Walls begins her memoir by acknowledging her first accident that she could
remember and gives details about what all happened. She appeals to mournful emotions of the
audience by describing the emotions and using very decisive word choice. I burned myself trying to

audience. This outpouring of emotion from Jeannette conveys an emotional tone that the audience can
connect with how Jeannette is feeling at the time. Her word choices allows for the reader s emotions to

Ernest Hemingway s The Big Two-Hearted River
Hemingway s 1925 short story, The Big Two Hearted River, originally from the collection of short
stories entitled In Our Time, engages in an introspective identity crisis, which arises after the book s
protagonist, Nick, returns from World War I. While Nick attempts to navigate his life outside of
combat, Hemingway takes him on a journey of reconciliation and self discovery. Embarking on his
journey into nature, Nick submerges himself in a life of what seems to be pure tranquility. In Nick s
eyes, society subjects people to violence, but nature is inherently good. Shortly after, Hemingway
provides Nick with tangible evidence opposing his original thoughts. Hemingway brings to light the
fact that both society and nature have subliminal binaries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After experiencing moments of loss and violence, Nick chooses to return to the one place of constancy
he knows, which is nature. In nature, Nick believes that he can escape the brutality and hate that
humanity creates. Leaving behind the burned town of Seney and choosing to enter the natural world,
Nick [feels] he [has] left everything behind, the need for thinking, the need to write, other needs. It
was all back of him, (Hemingway 179). Hemingway subtly suggests that Nick has been plagued with
an endless list of realities that have consumed him for far too long. Nick s escape from reality provides
brief moments of solitude and rest from his bustling world. Amidst the burned and destroyed town of
Seney a river remains untouched, providing a symbol of hope. While Seney seems broken, the
possibility of new beginnings and life exists. This binary is parallel in Nick s life as well. Nick
actively chooses to pursue new beginnings instead of dwelling on the memories of his past, but is
quickly reminded that he cannot escape the parts of his life that play a large part in his identity.
Attempting to escape the pressing realities of life back home, Nick notices that the problems he
internalizes in his own life are apparent in nature as well. While fishing and rivers seems to be a place
of happiness and healing for Nick, reality finds a way to creep in. Looking at a trout in the river, Nick
s heart tightened as the trout moved. He felt all the old feeling, (Hemingway 178). Nick does not
reveal the old feeling or who/what is associated with that feeling. Instead, it can be recognized that a
tightened heart is a sign of tension and anxiety. Despite Nick s best efforts to escape his past seeking
comfort in the familiar, he finds that like his pack, he carries his past with him wherever he goes,

Optical Properties Of Thick Metal Nanohole Arrays
2. Optical properties of thick metal nanohole arrays fabricated by electron beam and nanosphere
lithography.
INTRODUCTION
Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through nanohole arrays has been concentrated broadly in
several aspects, including the hypothesis and confirmation of its origin parameters influencing its
intensity, the optical properties, for example like its transmission spectra and divergence. Several
parameters including the refractive index of the medium on the metal film surface, the wavelength and
condition of polarization of the incident light, the holes shape and periodicity of the structures change
the spectral behavior in term of intensity and position of the transmitted peaks. The structures that
support EOT have discovered their applications in numerous fields including visible spectroscopy,
Raman spectroscopy, sub wavelength optics, nonlinear optics, and photolithography. As the EOT is
influenced by parameters like the shape and periodicity of the holes, devices made in light of this
marvel will be more sensitive and supports larger selectivity. Regardless of these advantages a large
portion of existing use of EOT has been acknowledged on the structures with limited region of
coverage. Because of the constrained techniques and choices for fabrication of such structures, the
EOT based devices were fabricated with finite array sizes. This paper deals with two methods that
deals with two methods to produce arrays of nanoholes with sizes of

Three principal elements required to create a MATLAB Graphical User Interface. The elements are
components, figures, callbacks.
1. Components
Each item on a GUI is a graphical component. The types of components include graphical controls
(pushbuttons, radio buttons, edit boxes, lists, sliders, etc.), static elements (frames and text strings),
menus, and axes. Graphical controls and static elements are created by the functions and axes are used
to display graphical data which is created by the function axes.
2. Figures
The components of a GUI must be arranged within a figure, which is a window on the computer
screen.
3. Callbacks
Finally, there must be some way to perform an action if a user clicks on a button. A mouse click or a
key press is an event, and the MATLAB program must respond to each event if the program is to
perform its function. The code executed in response to an event is known as a call back. There must be

Analysis Of Hester Street By Joan Micklin Silver
As John F. Kennedy famously stated, the United States of America exists as a nation of immigrants.
Besides those from Native American descent, every occupant of America can attribute their lineage to
ancestors who emigrated from another country and adopted America as their new home. Coming to a
new nation brings with it a series of difficulties, one of which is the struggle to find balance between
assimilation and the preservation of one s ethnic identity. Such a struggle is very present in the
romantic film Hester Street, directed by Joan Micklin Silver, detailing the lives of Jake and Gitl, two
Jewish immigrants living in New York during the early 20th century. Jake and Gitl each maintain
different attitudes toward assimilation, yet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hester Street does a good job of portraying this pressure, demonstrating its effects on specific
characters. After Gitl and Joey s arrival in New York, Jake takes the two, along with Bernstein to a
park outside the city. Pacing around while the other three sit under a tree, Jake exclaims: look what a
place is America, nu, Bernstein? (1:03:00) praising the scenic beauty of the little park, with its bright
sun, towering trees, and luscious grass. His acclaim of his surroundings represents his sense of pride
for the land around him, desiring to tout America to Bernstein, who less identifies with American
culture. Jake represents a very assimilated immigrant, further demonstrated in this scene by his
appearance. Walking around the three, Jake sports a striped, collared shirt and polka dot tie underneath
a snazzy pinstripe vest, as well as well fitted pants, and leather, lace up boots. Also, besides his
mustache, he is clean shaven and wears neat, slicked down hair. Jake s outfit and hairstyle correspond
with the average appearance of an American man of this time, representing his embrace of American
culture. As the shot switches between him, and Bernstein and Gitl, the stark contrast in their
appearances is accentuated, juxtaposing Jake s Americanized garb to the traditional outfits of their
native country of Russia. Bernstein s all black, 3 piece, wool suit, large

but are not limited to color, shape, weight, smell, and opacity. In the eyes of a dualist these states are
completely different but a physicalist would argue that they are equivalent. The argument that physical
and mental states are in fact distinct and can be made valid is shown through Leibniz s Law also
known as the notion of sameness. To understand Leibniz s Law we must first master identity. This
identity is not in terms of qualitative identity like twins but numerical identity. Numerical identity is
the notion of being the same thing as and that Everything is identical with itself. The structure for
Leibniz s law is if X equals Y then all aspects of X must equal all aspects of Y. Leibniz s Law can be
used to compare physical and mental states depending on if a dualist or a physicalist is making the
argument. The structure for a dualist is as follows: premise 1: mental states have property X, premise
2: physical states lack property X, therefore mental states and physical states are different because one
has while the one lacks a certain property. Here is my argument for a dualist: mental states have the
properties that include emotion, physical states lack emotion. Therefore mental states and physical
states are not the same. In premise one I argue that mental states have properties that include emotion.

The Five Imponents Of Alpha Kappa Alpha
In the 1900s, segregation and male dominance were a big part of American Society. African American
women were often underestimated as well as neglected of their respect and authority. Ethel
Hedgeman, who was a student at Howard University, believed that it was essential to create an
organization for a group of women who were willing to use their talents and strengths for the benefit
of others, but at the same time learn to value and respect themselves. She envisioned that this group
would focus on interaction, encouragement, and ethical growth between the members, and that is
exactly what Alpha Kappa Alpha has done ever since she created it. In 1908, AKA also known as the
sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first African American sorority was created. Members of Alpha
Kappa Alpha communicate and express their common ideas and goals in their own unique ways.
Alpha Kappa Alphas represent service and culture more than anything. Ever since AKA was founded
in 1908, their motto has been By Culture and By Merit , and the mission of the sorority goes along
with their motto. According to the mission tab of the official AKA website, service to all mankind, to
cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among
college women, and to alleviate problems concerning girls and women to maintain a progressive
ingress in college life are the five components of Alpha Kappa Alpha s mission to stand by their motto
(Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., Par. 1).

ABSTRACT
Herbal drug therapy is regarded as an important alternative for the treatment of chronic and infectious
disease. Ocimum gratissimum has been used extensively in traditional medicine in many
countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant status and antimicrobial activity of the
methanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum (MEOG) and to establish that the antimicrobial activity is
due to its antioxidant potentials. The total antioxidant status was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS
assays and the Folin Ciocalteu reagent method to determine total phenolic content of the MEOG.The
antimicrobial effect was determined by agar diffusion and broth dilution method against different
ATCC strains of pathogenic bacteria. Zones of inhibition, minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum
bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were determined. The results indicate that the antioxidant potential
and antimicrobial activity of MEOG is mainly due to its total phenolic content

Allegory And Death In The Gray Man By Sarah Orne Jewett
The Gray Man is a short story written by an American author named Sarah Orne Jewett who is a short
story writer. The story is set in an area around Mt. Agamenticus which is a wooden area located in
Southern Maine, and it portrays an important message about life. This is shown through the use of
allegory and personification, which includes giving personal attributes or characteristics to inanimate
objects. The allegorical theme is simply that the Gray Man, represents death. Because of him, the
townspeople will learn that the very reason life has meaning is because it eventually ends. Sarah Orne
Jewett lived in New England, in Berwick, Maine. As a young girl she would travel with her dad, who

The Gray Man himself, represents death. This is possible because he is an allegory, therefore, his
character represents a symbolic meaning rather than a human being. ... Death himself rode by in the

win welcome as a faithful friend! . Jewett paints a very vivid mental image here, which helps us
understand how the townspeople felt around the stranger. Jewett uses the literary element of an
allegory to portray a themed moral in a story. The Gray Man personifies the goodness of life, and his
actions are designed to teach mankind. People often use him as an advisor on how to live life, yet he is

Planned Parenthood Case Summary
Introduction
With repeated threats from Congress to defund Planned Parenthood and multiple states passing
restrictive laws, reproductive rights and abortion in particular continue to be increasingly under attack
in the United States. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that a woman s choice whether
to have an abortion is protected by her right to privacy and that any restrictions on that right must be
under strict scrutiny. This means that by law, women have the right to get abortions without facing
unnecessary restrictions. According to Roe v. Wade, the only time the government could enforce
restrictions on this right was when there is a compelling state interest to do so.
Nearly two decades later, the decision of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern ... Show more content

This case will decide whether strict abortion laws in the state of Texas are constitutional or not. The
challengers to these laws argue they place an undue burden on women seeking abortion, which goes
against the decision of Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
States all over the country enforce strict laws on women seeking abortions, but Texas has some of the
toughest restrictions. Texas only has six clinics that meet these tough restrictions, which means some
women would have to travel hundreds of miles just to get an abortion. In addition, 28 states require
women seeking abortions to wait for at least 24 hours and up to 72 hours after receiving counseling to
actually get the abortion. According to the Guttmacher Institute, these waiting periods effectively
require the woman make two separate trips to the clinic to obtain the procedure in 14 states.
Although the Supreme Court will rule on the Texas laws soon, passing a bill in Congress to make it
illegal for federal, state, and local governments to restrict a woman s right to abortion would once and
for all protect a woman s privacy and right to

The Protestant Ethic by Max Weber
The connection between economic life, rational self organisation and salvation are bought to life by
Max Weber in the Protestant Ethic. This paper will showcase the way in which these terms are related
to one another and it will explore this connection by drawing on what Weber refers to as the spirit of
capitalism . Let us begin by understanding the starting point of Weber s concerns for economic life.
It appears that Weber s interest is concerned with the development of modern life, more particularly
with the spirit of capitalism and the self organisation system ( Giddens, 1992:x). Weber is interested in
certain conduct and behaviour that is associated capitalism and economic lifestyles, this interest is
what allows Weber to explore the connection between economic life and Protestantism (Giddens,
1992:xi).
In order to fully understand the terms self organisation and salvation let us also understand what
Weber understood by the term the spirit of capitalism . Weber describes this term as a peculiar ethic in
which the aim is to seek an accumulation of capital, not necessarily for material purposes but also for
the sake of wealth itself (Giddens, 1992:xi). It is considered as a calculated pursuit of continuous
wealth accumulation and profit, it is this pursuit that is considered the essence of the spirit of
capitalism. It should be noted that this accumulation not be confused with greed but rather a rational
pursuit of profit (Giddens, 1992:xxxi). What we must also note

Hunger Games Themes
The Hunger Games is a popular film based on the trilogy of books written by Suzanne Collins. The
story takes place in the nation of Panem. Each year, one male and one female from each of the twelve
districts must participate in the hunger games contest. The participants are between the ages of twelve
and eighteen. These twenty four contestants must fight until only one contestant remains alive. This
contestant would then be crowned the winner. The annual hunger games were considered punishment
for rebelling against the government in the past. Although this movie was created mostly for
entertainment purposes, it contains many themes that Americans can relate to. In the beginning of the
movie, the residents of district twelve gathered to the area where the tributes would be selected to
participate in the games. Two names were drawn, which included Primrose Everdeen and Peeta
Mellark. Prim s older sister Katniss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

there is an announcement that both Katniss and Peeta are the annual hunger games winners. The film
can be related to our nation. People often warn others that our government is gaining too much
control. Revolting is the only way to stop an over ruling government. However, in the film we see that
the nation of Panem is being punished for their rebellion against the government. Thousands of
citizens are killed, including many young children. While a situation like this is unlikely to occur in
the United States, there is always a chance that it could happen one day. The film does a wonderful job

The Pros And Cons Of Food Stamps
Eighteen percent of America is currently on food stamps. Why is that so? Food stamps allow just
about anyone to qualify. Most of those on food stamps are able bodied adults without dependents

with its rules. Being on food stamps does not give someone a comfortable and easy lifestyle, but it is
comfortable enough. It is no secret that obesity is a growing epidemic in America. Food stamps are
one of the major roots of the problem. Imagine getting to stay home and not have to go to work. The

Less than one percent of America has what is considered a very low food security, yet eighteen
percent of America is on food stamps (Hoar). There are many people in the surrounding area of
Leedey, Oklahoma that are on food stamps. Most of them do not have any plans to make a change in
their lives, and none of them seem to be struggling in regards to food. Many will say that it is not the
government s job to control what people eat. The average person in America eats or drinks something
that can be considered junk food every day. Why should the people on food stamps be limited on food
when they are already limited to other expenditures? Seeing that it is everyone s right to eat what he or
she wants, he or she should be able to buy junk food if it is he or she s own money. Food stamps are
primarily run on government money. At least those who are not on food stamps who buy junk food
can say that it is he or she s own money. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),
food stamps, was created to get rid of hunger in the United States (Hoar). According to Robert

The Balance Of Payment ( Bop ) Essay
According to Federal Reserve Bank of New York, The Balance of Payment (BOP) is a statement used
by a country to summarize an economy s transactions with the rest of the world by both private and
public sectors for a specified time period, usually every quarter or year. It is known as Balance of
International Payment , it involves all transactions between a country s residents and its non residents
involving goods, services and income, financial claims on and liabilities to the rest of the word. If a
country has received money, this is known as a credit , and if a country has paid or given money, the
transaction is counted as a debit . Theoretically, the BOP should be zero, meaning that assets (credits)
and liabilities (debits) should balance; however, in the reality, this is rarely the case.
The BOP is divided into 3 main categories: the current account, the capital account, and the financial
account:
1. The Current Account
The current account refers to the export and import of goods and services into a country. Within the
current account are credits and debits on the trade of merchandise, including goods such as raw
materials and manufactured goods that are bought, sold or given away in the form of aid. Services
refer to receipts from tourism, transportation, engineering, business service fees such as lawyers or
management consulting, and royalties from patents and copyrights, and income generating assets such
as stocks. Last but not least, it includes the unilateral

Vermeer s Skopos, Coherence, And Language
Pragmatics is concerned with the study of meanings as communicated by a speaker (or writer) and
interpreted by a listener (or reader) (Yule 1996). Pragmatics target is to bring speech to its context in
order to understand correctly; as basically in the communication through language there is a way more
than what is said. Pragmatics cannot by any means be explained without comparing it to semantics.
Semantics is known as the study of literal meaning, on the other hand, pragmatics is the study of non
uttered meaning intended by a speaker (writer). Pragmatics is not concerned with the mere meaning of
the language, rather it is concerned with examination of language and the effects of language on

  • 2. Partition Action Research Paper d. The Parties to a Partition Action The parties that must be included in a petition to partition are every joint tenant or tenant in common who holds an interest in the property, and their spouses. Life tenants, judgment creditors, mortgage holders, and other lien creditors should also be brought into the proceeding, even though they are not required parties. A life tenant in the property may join in the partition proceeding and upon a partition sale will receive the fair market value of his or her interest. This sum will be paid either in an annual amount or a lump sum paid out of the proceeds, based on a value of the share of interest in the land calculated in relation to his or her estimated life expectancy. Joint tenants or tenants in common may still obtain partition, in kind or by sale, even with the existence of a lien. If an actual partition is successful, any existing liens will follow the share allocated to the co tenant who is the debtor and the other tenants will be able to hold their interest unencumbered by the previously applied liens. If the partition occurs by forced judicial sale then the purchaser will take the property subject to the liens. The better practice is to make creditors, mortgagees, or lien holders a party to the petition proceeding so that upon sale of the land the liens will be extinguished and satisfied ... Substantial injury is defined as when the fair market value of each share after partition in kind would be materially less than if the property was sold as a whole or if the in kind division would result in material impairment of the rights of a co tenant. • 3. The Reluctant Security Guard The Reluctant Security Guard 1. Relevant Facts 1.1. David Tuff was a security guard at the Blue Mountain Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 1.2 As part of his job training, it was necessary for him to get a security guard license, requiring him to obey the Security Officer s Manual, which included the following statement: If a serious accident or illegal behavior should occur on the premises of the licensee, it shall be the responsibility of the licensee to notify the appropriate police department immediately . 1.3. Fourteen months after Tuff joined the company, Blue Mountain issued new rules of pro¬cedure, demanding the security guards to order and escort intoxicated per¬sons, including persons driving under the in¬fluence of alcohol, off its parking lots and onto the public roads. 1.4. Tuff complained to his superiors some¬times several times a day using abusive language in denouncing the rules because he believed his license could be revoked once he fails to report illegal behavior. 1.5. Manuel Hernandez, His immediate supervisor, told him that if any such situation arose he should contact the su¬pervisor in charge, who will further make a decision and also that he needs not to worry about potential scenarios but about his paycheck. 1.6. Tuff then contacted a volunteer organiza¬tion working to prevent drunk driving, whose representatives approached his supervisors, opposing the policy 1.7. • 4. How Steinbeck Uses Two of His Characters to Explore the... How Steinbeck Uses Two of His Characters to Explore the Role of Power in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck The two characters that I have chosen to examine for exploring the role of power in the novel are Slim and Curley. Slim is a highly skilled mule driver and the acknowledged prince of the ranch. Slim is both respected and admired by all of the men he works with. In the book it says that Slim s opinion in law and that Slim don t need to wear no high heeled boots to say that he is superior over the others because that s how the men see him anyway. He is seen as the leader in the bunkhouse because his word is final, for example, Slim has the last word in the situation of whether to shoot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Slim has natural power; his authority is gained through respect of the other men. They come to him voluntarily to ask his advice and to talk to him. Slim s height is also used to reflect his status and shows us that even though he could have physical power over the men, he chooses not to, instead he respects them. Slim is seen as the leader by the men even though it seems that he is equal to them. The fact that Slim is very modest seems to make him even more powerful. The relationship between Slim and the men is symbiotic because he gives them as much respect as they give to him. Carlson stepped back to let Slim precede him. This shows that the men are willing to let Slim go before them, because of the relationship that they have, and it appears to happen in a natural way. There is a big difference in the way that Slim and Curley use their power. Slim does not abuse the power he has, unlike Curley. Slim if fairly equal to the other men as he wears the same type of clothes, works hard and sleeps in the bunkhouse along with them. I think that this makes the men respect him more as he is one of them and does not see himself as superior to them. Curley wears boots to make himself stand out and does not work like the others do. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By making the play more theatrical, the audience can see the individual personalities of the characters. For example Richard seen as a belligerent, vicious, vulgar, hideous person who wants to prove that he is a villain. One example of the paranormal in Act V is when Richard refers to how the ghosts make him feel responsible: O coward conscience, how dost thou afflict me but he is able to see it differently. Also this recalls Margaret s curse: the worm of conscience still begnaw thy soul, which meant that the centre of his conscience would incessantly affect his soul forever. This shows that Richard is feeling guilty, he fears the ghostly vengeance of all the people he had killed and that the curses made by the ghosts will affect him when he goes to war. Richard is able to calm himself down: What do I fear? this proves that he has no feeling for anyone, no conscience and is going to prove that he is a villain despite his earlier attack of remorse. Here, Shakespeare s use of supernatural is effectual because it reminds us of the members of family killed by Richard to become king and is more dramatic. It is more dramatic because it shows Richard deserves to die as his punishment and people will be punished if they commit vile things. This makes the scene look more theatrical and stimulating, this enables the audience to see what is going on inside Richard s head and whether we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1908, he created the Ford Model T car in the shed located behind his home. This car was the most popular car of all time due to its cheap prices (compared to early automobiles) and it s constant availability (Ford Model T). Henry Ford transformed the automobile from an invention to an innovation and it continues to affect our lives today. When the Model T was introduced to the people of America, it revolutionized literature forever. The idea of an affordable car for the everyday man captured the imagination of authors and filmmakers. Throughout the 1920s, the Model T was featured in dozens of movies, television series, and books. Even today, thousands of pieces are shown to have cars originate from this American innovation. ... This poem, by Aboriginal poet Kath Walker, also known as Oodgeroo, is about how she believes that things are becoming better, and for this trend to continue, Aborigines and Australians alike need to trust each other. In order for you to understand the rest of the speech, I will now present a reading of the poem. Look up, my people; the Dawn is breaking; The world is waking; To a bright new day. In stanza 2 the lines Now brood no more and The hope assigned you shows that there was clearly some kind of destiny that was less then looked forward to in each aboriginal individual. In Stanza 3, there is a much larger presence of this message. With lines like So long we waited; bound and frustrated; till hate be hated; and caste deposed. Provides an insight into Aboriginies having to wait in pain until something was done about their lives and opportunities. Different Phases Of Solar And Magnetic Activity Cycles CHAPTER 2 Cosmic Ray Modulation during Different Phases of Solar and Magnetic Activity Cycles INTRODUCTION Cosmic rays are modulated as they traverse into the heliosphere. Measurements have shown that cosmic ray intensity varies on different time scales. On a longer time scale, the cosmic ray intensity variations in anti phase with solar activity having ≈ 11 year cyclicity is well known and studied extensively (e.g., see Venkatesan and Badruddin, 1990; Storini et al., 1995; Usoskin et al., 1998; Mavromichalaki et al., 1998; Kane, 2003; Sabbah and Rybansky, 2006; Ma et al., 2009; Chaudhary et al., 2011; Kudela, 2012). In addition, the ≈ 22 year modulation cycle in cosmic ray flux due to solar magnetic field polarity reversals is observed and modeled (e.g., Jokipii and Thomas, 1981; Potgieter and Moraal, 1985; Webber and Lockwood, 1988; Potgieter, 1995; Cliver and Ling, 2001; Laurenza et al., 2012). However, in order to understand these phenomena, it is important to understand how cosmic ray transport and propagation vary with the solar activity and solar magnetic polarity (Heber, 2013). Although sunspots have been used as a convenient index of solar activity, anti correlated with cosmic ray intensity, it has been recognized that they are not intrinsically related to the problem of solar modulation of cosmic rays. The Roosevelt s, Franklin and Eleanor, were two of the most influential people in American history during the twentieth century. However, when it comes to their leadership styles, they are completely different. Franklin was what people would call an extrovert. It is no wonder that managements, in order to avoid this reduction in reportable earnings, frequently opt to use the pooling of interest method when they complete a merger. Since no goodwill is created, over eager managers are able to pay outrageous prices for acquisitions with little or no accountability on the balance sheet. Since it makes no sense to have two different ways for accounting for a merger, the FASB decided they should eliminate the pooling of interest method and force all transactions to be done via the purchase method. Executives and politicians claimed this will significantly reduce the number of mergers since the new standards would cause reportable earnings to drop as soon as a company had completed an acquisition. As a concession, the FASB will no longer require goodwill to be written off unless the assets became impaired (which means it becomes clear that the goodwill is not worth what the company paid for it). The FASB s six members unanimously approved two new accounting standards on Friday July 23, 2001. Financial Accounting Statement 141 will eliminate the pooling of interest method for booking mergers. The method had been popular with dealmakers because it allowed companies to do deals at a premium without marking up their assets. Nick s escape from reality provides brief moments of solitude and rest from his bustling world. Amidst the burned and destroyed town of Seney a river remains untouched, providing a symbol of hope. While Seney seems broken, the possibility of new beginnings and life exists. This binary is parallel in Nick s life as well. INTRODUCTION Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through nanohole arrays has been concentrated broadly in several aspects, including the hypothesis and confirmation of its origin parameters influencing its intensity, the optical properties, for example like its transmission spectra and divergence. Several parameters including the refractive index of the medium on the metal film surface, the wavelength and condition of polarization of the incident light, the holes shape and periodicity of the structures change the spectral behavior in term of intensity and position of the transmitted peaks. The structures that support EOT have discovered their applications in numerous fields including visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, sub wavelength optics, nonlinear optics, and photolithography. The argument that physical and mental states are in fact distinct and can be made valid is shown through Leibniz s Law also known as the notion of sameness. To understand Leibniz s Law we must first master identity. This identity is not in terms of qualitative identity like twins but numerical identity. Numerical identity is the notion of being the same thing as and that Everything is identical with itself. This paper will showcase the way in which these terms are related to one another and it will explore this connection by drawing on what Weber refers to as the spirit of capitalism . Let us begin by understanding the starting point of Weber s concerns for economic life. It appears that Weber s interest is concerned with the development of modern life, more particularly with the spirit of capitalism and the self organisation system ( Giddens, 1992:x). Weber is interested in certain conduct and behaviour that is associated capitalism and economic lifestyles, this interest is what allows Weber to explore the connection between economic life and Protestantism (Giddens, 1992:xi). In order to fully understand the terms self organisation and salvation let us also understand what Weber understood by the term the spirit of capitalism . Weber describes this term as a peculiar ethic in which the aim is to seek an accumulation of capital, not necessarily for material purposes but also for the sake of wealth itself (Giddens, 1992:xi). It is considered as a calculated pursuit of continuous wealth accumulation and profit, it is this pursuit that is considered the essence of the spirit of capitalism. It should be noted that this accumulation not be confused with greed but rather a rational pursuit of profit (Giddens, 1992:xxxi). What we must also note ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Hunger Games Themes The Hunger Games is a popular film based on the trilogy of books written by Suzanne Collins. The story takes place in the nation of Panem. Each year, one male and one female from each of the twelve districts must participate in the hunger games contest. The participants are between the ages of twelve and eighteen. These twenty four contestants must fight until only one contestant remains alive. This contestant would then be crowned the winner. The annual hunger games were considered punishment for rebelling against the government in the past. Although this movie was created mostly for entertainment purposes, it contains many themes that Americans can relate to. Why should the people on food stamps be limited on food when they are already limited to other expenditures? It is known as Balance of International Payment , it involves all transactions between a country s residents and its non residents involving goods, services and income, financial claims on and liabilities to the rest of the word. If a country has received money, this is known as a credit , and if a country has paid or given money, the transaction is counted as a debit . The BOP is divided into 3 main categories: the current account, the capital account, and the financial account: 1. The Current Account The current account refers to the export and import of goods and services into a country.
