Nectar in a Sieve by Markandaya
Bend like the grass, that you do not break. This quote, said by Nathan, shows that many characters do
not fight for what they believe in, but rather, they let it happen, and acquiesce in their difficult
situations. Nectar in a Sieve by Markandaya is a story about an Indian family living with demanding
situations and trying to obtain food for their children, all while dealing with foreigners and a growing
society. Numerous characters in the story accept issues and events that they cannot change. The
characters attitudes towards acceptance and change is to endure it, and let the change occur. The
narrator, Rukmani, does not strive for what she believes in, instead, she lets the influences and
decisions of others control her life. A point in the story when Rukmani accepts unavoidable
circumstances, and does nothing to stop it, is when Kunthi blackmails Nathan into giving her their rice
(Markandaya 85). This shows that Rukmani does not fight for what she believes in because she could
have went looking for Kunthi to get her rice back, but she did not. Therefore, Rukmani lets others
control her. Another time in Nectar in a Sieve when the protagonist accepts changes that occur in her
life is when Raja is killed (Markandaya 90). Two men come to Rukmani s house, and they are subtly
telling her not to sue them for the death of her child. Instead of suing the tannery for the premature
death of her son, she simply concurred with the men that his death was not their

Similarities Between Julius Caesar And Malcom X
Today we ll be looking over some surprising similarities with Julius Caesar and Malcom X, two
leaders who quickly rose to power in their respective times. Even though from completely different
ages, and a diverse difference in race and societies, both men still faced similar trials. Similar fates.
Born in July 13th, 100 BC, Julius Caesar was born into the world. Early trials such as having to lead
his family as the head at the age of 16 when his father died suddenly in 85 BC. He quickly rose to
power after serving in wars, and sought political power, beginning his campaigns in 59 BC. While
many praises Caesar, some feared that he held too much power, and during a senate session he was
assassinated by several of the senators who plotted his demise, marking the end of Julius Caesar.
Malcom X (Malcom Little), was born in May 19, 1925, Omaha, Nebraska. Having to frequently
relocate homes from threats from the Black Legion, a white racist group, his father was killed in a car
accident when Malcom was only at the age of 6, Malcom s mother believed the accident occurred at
the hands of the Black Legion. In 1937, his mother was sent to a mental hospital, and Malcom then
had to fend for himself in multiple foster homes. After becoming a Nation of Islam member in ...

successfully completed many military campaigns, and Malcom X was spreading the word of Islam
and had become an influential leader of his respective nation, as has Caesar in his own. While both
were loved, hated by others, both continued to strive and wanted to move forward in their careers.
Another similarity is the way they met their ends, assassination. Unknowingly, and both killed in
excessive manners, such as, Caesar being stabbed 23 times, and Malcom X being hit with 21

Google Inc (Google) is the world leader in internet searches. By 2007 63% of internet searches were
through Google, surpassing other search engines such as Yahoo and Microsoft MSN. Goggle has also
developed web based tools such maps, toolbars, G Mail and acquired the popular you Tube. After
dominating the web search industry since its search engine was introduction in 1998, however, Google

A business whose ad receives thousands of clicks from sources that have no intention of making a
purchase may run through its marketing budget quickly and have to drop out of the ad game
altogether. Businesses have tried to use click fraud to drive up the cost of competitors ads and put
them at a competitive disadvantage. Google credits customers for invalid clicks. It also has a system in
place to detect click fraud before customers are charged. Google was the object of class actions suits,
where they had to settle out of court for failing to do anything concrete about click fraud. Yahoo was
also subject of class actions for the same reason.
Google s declared code of conduct is Don t be evil , a phrase which they went so far as to include in
their prospectus for their 2004 IPO, noting, We believe strongly that in the long term, we will be better
served as shareholders and in all other ways by a company that does good things for the world even if
we forgo some short term gains.
At its peak in early 2004, Google handled upwards of 84.7% of all search requests on the World Wide
Web through its website and through its partnerships with other Internet clients like Yahoo!, AOL, and
CNN. In February 2004, Yahoo! dropped its partnership with Google, providing an independent search
engine of its own. This cost Google some market share, yet Yahoo! s move highlighted Google s own
distinctiveness, and today the verb to

Redwood Short Stories
The city of Redwood has been just like any small town of star scattered America located in rural
Michigan. The town s population only consisted of probably not even 700 citizens; so everybody
knew everybody and everybody knew each other s business. There was never anything big or exciting
happening there, the most eye widening crime they ve ever had was a person jaywalking one of the
three stoplights of the town. All was fine and dandy in this town, that is until the big, bad bandit came
to town. Did you hear the news?! Charlie Birklin exclaimed breathlessly to her fellow friend Jonah

Essay on Ophelia
Ophelia The Innocent Victim in Shakespeare s Hamlet
Poor Ophelia, she lost her lover, her father, her mind, and, posthumously, her brother. Ophelia is the
only truly innocent victim in Hamlet. This essay will examine Ophelia s downward spiral from a
chaste maiden to nervous wreck.
From the beginning of the play, in Act I Scene iii, Laertes and Polonius are trying to convince her that
Hamlet does not love her and only is interested in her so he can sleep with her. Laertes says Perhaps
he loves you now, ...... His greatness weighed, his will is not his own. He is telling Ophelia that she is
likely to have her heart broken because of Hamlet s high birth. He may not be able to choose who he
marries, so although he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Act III scene i, Polonius and the King hide behind Ophelia s curtains and eavesdrop on the
conversation between Hamlet and Ophelia. Hamlet goes on to scold Ophelia and accuse her of not
being chaste Ha, ha! Are you honest? ... Are you fair? ... Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be /
a breeder of sinners? Hamlet goes on to say ...This was sometime a paradox, but now / the time gives
it proof. I did love you once. Ophelia replies with Indeed, my lord, you made me believe so. Her heart
must have torn in two when Hamlet came back with You should not have believed me, for virtue /
cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish / of it. I loved you not. Hamlet admits that he was
deceiving her the whole time. This was likely a major factor in Ophelia s descent into madness and
eventually, death. Again, Ophelia is the victim.
Ophelia s downfall continues throughout the play, and her final plunge into the waters of madness and
suicide culminate around her father s death. Hamlet, while talking threateningly to his mother,
accidentally slays Polonius who was hiding behind the curtain in his mother s room. Hamlet thought it
was Claudius he heard coming to his mother s aid when she cried for help and lunged at the curtain
with his sword, killing Polonius. O, I am slain! were his final words. After Ophelia learns of her father
s death at the hands of her estranged lover, she goes

Sandy Hook Shooting Essay
To be afraid is no less an innate behavior than to be hungry. To find relief we look to fill ourselves
with comfort and content, but there will always be hunger, and there will always be fear. We as human
beings cannot control our surroundings, and with them the fear that hides underneath and in between.
We cannot escape the feeling of fear or its constant pestering, but we may control how we react to it.
Those affected by the unspeakable events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of 2012
have come face to face with terror, many sweet and innocent souls coming so close as to shake hands
with death. Closely following responses of differing viewpoint and opinion ensued, regarding what
had happened and what is to be done in the future. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By identifying the cause of the problem at its roots, we are lead to believe that we may be able to stop
it before it sprouts. The murderer, in the case of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre, was socially
awkward and reserved , as Ben Stein puts it in his article in The American Spectator (Stein). Perhaps
our killer had a similar background to many of our American youth. With increasing trends in teen
depression and suicide, and the implementation of more and more prescription anti depressants and
anxiety medications, there are adverse side effects. Peter Breggin, in an excerpt from his article on
Naturalnews.com, states that psychiatric drugs, including antidepressants, stimulants, and
tranquilizing sedatives, can cause violence (Breggin). While this assumption does hold true in some
cases, are we really to be blaming the drug for the acts of the human, already unstable and unreliable?
And are we to take a true monster like the Sandy Hook shooter and compare him to any troubled
young man, dealt a bad hand and struck with anxiety? Stein includes a quote from John R. Coyne, Jr.,
There is evil in the world. It s beyond mental illness, beyond gun control. It is evil (Stein). Perhaps to
blame the medication for an unspeakable crime is to blame a scapegoat for an act of pure and

Math in Special Education Essay
There s no denying that education is constantly changing, but what s truly astounding is the difference
that can be throughout the years in math. More is changing in math classrooms than the tools that are
used. The expectations that 21st century students face are completely transforming the approach that s
being taken in classrooms across America. The United States wants to make sure its students are ready
to compete on a global level, and teachers are stepping up to the plate. The National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has led the movement for education reform in mathematics. The
NCTM began in the mid 1970 s and was a public voice of mathematics education that supported

Students need to understand the reasoning behind the way math works, these standards put this into
practice. A second groundbreaking document released by the National Council of Teachers
Mathematics was Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics. This set of standards present[s] a
vision of what teaching should entail to support the changes in curriculum set out in the Curriculum
and Evaluation Standards. This document spells out what teachers need to know to teach toward new
goals for mathematics education and how teaching should be evaluated for the purpose of
improvement (Burris). It was essential for this change because it changed how mathematics was
taught. Teachers now had new goals and had different processes of evaluation, which in the end,
resulted in a greater improvement for themselves, and also great academic achievement for students.
The NCTM followed with the 1995 release of Assessment Standards for Teaching Mathematics.
NCTM produced this important document because new assessment strategies and practices needed to
be developed that will enable teachers and others to assess students performance in a manner that
reflects the NCTM reform vision for school mathematics (Burris). This allowed teachers to give better
assessments to their students, which led to them being able to better asses themselves. It was easier for
them to know what they

Birth Right citizenship is a legal right to citizenship for all children born in a country s territory,
regardless of parentage. But many people use the term to indicate the general or specific roles, rights
or duties of people within a given society. To federal government officials, a person either is or isn t a

These are the ones whom obtain birthright citizenship . The second are firm believers in the only ones
that should be citizens are the ones who go through the proper process of becoming a citizen and
according to the article in USA today, it states that illegal immigrants are having babies as a way to
obtain citizenship, which too many Americans cheapens the whole idea of being American . The last
group is the other the ones whom are completely neutral or believe in the beliefs of the first or second
group but not down to the word. Possible if they believe the child should get birthrights but not the
parents, only the child and mother should get them, or if they believe that they should get them but
still have to work through the proper process to receive them to their full extent. The great majority of
people live in cities. This is no chance occurrence. Even long before our present age of giant cities,
even before ancient Rome, people tended to live in concentration, in whatever size of community their
environment allowed. Probably the human desire to live in close company is instinctive. We look upon
hermits as unfortunate; we readily agree that friendship doubles joy and divides grief. The issue, then,
is what is the best we can do together? For example, whether we are ideally clustered in small cities,
or in fewer very large ones. And does our density affect not only resource consumption, but our
psyche? Do

The Hypocrisy Of American Slavery By Fredrick Douglass
People have been beaten down, spat upon, imprisoned, enslaved, and even killed for their beliefs, race,
ethnicity, gender, and other characteristics throughout history. Throughout much of American history,
African Americans have been the victims of countless injustices and have been thought of as less than
human by society. Many people opposed society s view of African Americans and stood up for their
rights. Those who stood up for the rights of slaves and African Americans tried their best to persuade
the public that their treatment of these people was cruel and an injustice to humanity. This is evident in
the speech The Hypocrisy of American Slavery by Fredrick Douglass in the years leading up to the
civil war, and the speech We Shall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing this, president Johnson earns credibility with all people who are listening to his speech. Also
by using this quote, he persuades his audience that he knows what he is talking about by saying that
the destiny of America and equal rights for all are connected. Both speakers use ethos to give their
arguments validity and persuade their audience that injustices against slaves and African Americans
should be stopped and they should be treated equally. In addition to ethos, Fredrick Douglass and
Lyndon B. Johnson appeal to their audience s emotions to persuade them of their points using pathos.
Pathos is a persuasive technique in which a speaker uses language that appeals to their audience s
emotions to prove a point. In The Hypocrisy of American Slavery , Fredrick Douglass says, Standing
with God and the crushed and bleeding slave on this occasion, I will, in the name of humanity which
is outraged, in the name of liberty which is fettered, in the name of the constitution and the Bible,
which are disregarded and trampled upon, dare to call in question and to denounce, with all the
emphasis I can command, everything that serves to perpetuate slavery the great sin and shame of
America! . In this quote, the speaker uses a myriad of charged words to denounce American slavery
with great emphasis. The charged words and imagery that Douglass uses creates horrid images in the
audience s head and would appeal to

Political Parties And The Democratic Party Essay
Introduction:
Originally political parties were seen as skeptical by our Founding Fathers and therefore opposed.
However, today our government has political parties. Political parties attempt to gain control of the
government and influence its decisions. The two most influential parties in American government are
the Republican and Democratic Party. These two parties have very contrasting beliefs which they
present in their platforms. Democrats believe in the need for intervention by government in the form
of more and bigger programs and agree that there must be fairness in government regulations and
freedom of expression. Republicans however, have more conservative values and cultivate the
importance of family and the efforts made by individuals. They, unlike the Democratic Party, prefer to
keep the power out of the hands of the government. Political parties business and actions affect every
American. Especially when the political party is governing and practicing its beliefs. The structure of
marriage, education, taxes, and defense spending are all topics that influence the daily lives of
American individuals. That is why is it is important to know where each political party stands.
Marriage and Family:
Republicans describe marriage as the union of one man and one woman and their regulations revolve
around these ideals. They state that children s emotional and physical health is stronger when they are
raised in a household with two parents. To Republicans, natural

Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Birthmark
The Birthmark is a short story authored by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published in 1848. The story is
about Aylmer, a brilliant scientist who is obsessed with science and is planning to use his experiments
to remove a birthmark on the face of his wife Georgiana. Aylmer s love for science made him yearn to
obtain control of the entire divinity. His wife was among his victims of science that was stronger in
him than the love he had for Georgiana. Aylmer became blind to science to the extent that he could not
realize that he was damaging his wife and putting his marriage at risk. It examines the obsession with
science and human perfection that often cause problems if not controlled as seen in the story.
Hawthorne s aim with this tale was to warn its readers regarding the dangers of science and
knowledge with the story, and this is analyzed below.
Ronald Davis, Barbara Eckstein, Liz Rosenberg, Jerry A. Herndon, and Jeffrey Howard, are among
the authors who have analyzed Nathaniel s work The Birthmark. In an article titled Science and
Technology in the Birthmark, Ronald agreed by the fact that The Birthmark is a story with several
warnings. He identifies the main catalysts in the story as unnatural obsession with technology and
science by Aylmer, who is the main character. Ronald stated that in Nathaniel Hawthorne s, The
Birthmark , there is an unnatural obsession with science

Designing The Fashion Industry ( Mcalpine 14 )
According to scratchhard.com, the fashion industry generates an average of $20 billion each year.
Fashion designers are the heart of the fashion world. Designing is a form of art that is translated into
clothing. Inspiration for the designs comes from trends, art, culture, places, and the media. Fashion
designers create ideas which they turn into clothing to sell. The first step of designing is researching
current fashion trends and predicting future trends. Trends determine the success of the fashion
industry (McAlpine 14). Designers choose a speciality to design. Swimwear, bridal wear, children s

Fashion designers can create apparel for numerous people or for a select few. Haute couture designers
create clothes specifically for a customer. One outfit could cost thousands of dollars. Ready to wear
designs are produced in large numbers but sold at high prices. Mass produced clothing is constructed
in large numbers and sold at reasonable prices. This is where most designers work. Boutique designers
work alone or in groups to create their own designs and find outlets to sell their clothing. In 2012,
twenty five percent of the designers were self employed. Large apparel companies usually consist of a
team of designers headed by a creative manager. Very few designers work for high fashion brands.
High fashion designers earn the most money and are the most well known. Many different outlets of
design are available as career options (McAlpine 14).
Formal education fro fashion designers is not required, but it is recommended. Preparing to become a
fashion designer can start in high school by taking art, home economics, math, and chemistry (Morkes

portfolio, and experience or an internship will be the most likely to receive the job. Many universities
offer various degrees pertaining to fashion. Baylor University in Waco, Texas is one of the top twenty

Social Media And Its Impact On Buying Habits, Schooling,...
When I really think about social media has now made a substantial impact on buying habits,
schooling, and relationships. However, networking through social media plays a larger role in human
lives than one may realize. When I hear the statement everyone is a result of his or her surroundings
has verified to be correct when discussing the effect of social media and web sharing. It is truly
amazing to see that scientists have proposed that most social networks mainly upkeep current social
relationships. Facebook, for instance, has demonstrated that there is some certainty to that suggestion.
The aim of Facebook is to uphold current offline associations or solidify offline relations, rather than
meeting different individuals. While, the idea for social networks was to be widely obtainable, it is not
uncommon to discover groups exhausting the sites to distant themselves by ethnic groups, schooling
level, stage of development, etc. When connecting social media to our average lives; from what we

Literary Analyzes Of Young Goodman Brown
Literary analyzes of Young Goodman Brown Young goodman brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a
story about a normal man that ventures into the forest to meet an old man who attempts to tempt him
into going deeper into the woods to worship the devil. After the old man convinces him that everyone

Hawthorne effectively uses the personality and psychology of the Characters along with symbolism to

The old man uses an everybody is doing it approach to encourage Goodman Brown to attend a

Mckeithan continues to say, The Minister of Salem Village, Deacon Gookin, Goody Closyse, and
Faith were all good in spite of what Goodman Brown eventually came to think of them (96). These are
people that were supposedly more spiritually mature than Goodman Brown. He relied on their faith to

Contribution Of Entrepreneurs And New Zealand Business...
Introduction
The Investopedia defines the entrepreneur as a person who starts his own business by taking lot of
risks. (Entrepreneur, 2014). Most of the large organisations around the world have been started by
entrepreneurs. The contribution of entrepreneurs to a country s business environment holds a high
value. EY Entrepreneur of The Year Award s Director, Jon Hooper stated that Successful entrepreneurs
have an extraordinary passion, self belief and that keeps them going when others might give up.
Because of this, they are able to make a significant contribution to New Zealand s economy and to the
community by creating jobs, driving productivity, fuelling growth and inspiring others (EY, 2014).
Entrepreneurs are contributing in various ways to the business environment and some of them will be
by providing employment, growing economy, innovating new technologies, creating market
competitiveness and also by providing contributions to the society. Therefore, this essay is a critical
evaluation of the contribution of entrepreneurs to the New Zealand business environment.

Should School Uniforms Be Mandatory In Primary And...
I believe school uniforms should be mandatory in primary and secondary schools because it relieves

Unfortunately, now kids spend so much time being stressed about popularity that they hardly have the
energy to learn anything valuable.
Parents as well can benefit because buying uniforms is much cheaper and less stressful than spending
large amounts of money and time purchasing varied clothes, usually for more than one child at a time.
It is cheaper to wear school uniforms because you only have to buy one or two sets of clothes for the
entire year, whereas most people buy up to 20 outfits in a uniform free school. School uniforms take
the pressure off students to pay top dollar for clothes, according to Reginald Wilson, a senior scholar
at the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. I think it does lower the cost of clothes,
and kids don t emphasize clothes as much when they re all wearing the same thing, Wilson said.
Certainly the competition to wear the best shoes or the best sweaters and so forth has been prevalent in
school ever since I was in school, and the poor kids felt inferior. Therefore, when all students are
dressed alike, competition between students over clothing choices and the teasing of those who are
dressed in less expensive or less fashionable outfits can be eliminated. It also really helps to get up in
the morning and not have to think about

Background of Kentucky Fried Chicken
Background of Kentucky Fried Chicken(KFC)
KFC Corporation, or KFC, founded and also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken is a chain of fast food
restaurants based in Louisville, Kentucky. KFC primarily sells chicken pieces, wraps, salads and
sandwiches. While its primary focus is fried chicken, KFC also offers a line of roasted chicken
products, side dishes and desserts. Outside North America, KFC offers beef based products such as
hamburgers or kebabs, pork based products such as ribs and other regional fare.
The company was founded as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952, though
the idea of KFC s fried chicken actually goes back to 1930. The company adopted the abbreviated
form of its name in 1991. Starting in April 2007, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The restaurant gradually became famous and the McDonald brothers begin franchising their restaurant
in the year 1953. The first franchise was taken by Neil Fox and under it; the second Mc Donald s
restaurant was opened in Fresno, California. It was the first to introduce the Golden Arch design. The
third and fourth restaurants were opened in Saginaw, Michigan and Downey, California, respectively.
The latter is the oldest Mc Donald s restaurant still in operation. In 1954, an entrepreneur and
milkshake mixer salesman, Ray Kroc, acquired the franchise of McDonald s restaurant for outside
California and Arizona. In effect, Kroc opened his first and the overall ninth restaurant in Illinois,
Chicago, and gave birth to Mc Donald s Corporation. In 1958, the restaurant chain sold its 100
millionth hamburger. In 1960, Kroc renamed his company as McDonald s Corporation . In 1961, Kroc
convinced the McDonald brothers to sell the business rights to him for a sum $2.7milion.
Later that year, the Hamburger University was opened, which gave away McDonald s restaurant
Bachelor of Hamburgology degrees to students. In 1963, the mascot Ronald McDonald was born as a
part of a marketing strategy in US. In 1967, the first restaurant outside US was opened in Richmond,
British Columbia. In 1974, the 3000th restaurant opened in Woolwich, United Kingdom, which is the
first of the country. Happy Meal was introduced in US in 1979. In 1984, the company became the

Essay On Coat Of Arms
The Revolutionary War hadn t been won yet but in 1778, the colony of New York adopted a coat of
arms that spoke of victory and a bright future. That coat of arms later became the center of the (New
York state flag) in 1901. It was during those perilous times that our 11th state, New York, created the
symbol on the (New York flag). This symbol also doubles as the seal of New York, used by the
secretary of the state for important state documents to this day. Each detail of this (NY flag) tells of
the faith of the people of New York had in their colony/state, and in turn their country. To me, it seems
to perfectly represent the ideals and hopes of all our country s forefathers. The coat of arms on the

John Wayne As An Example Of A Revisionist Western Film
The Western genre been highly prevalent in Hollywood films for decades. Beginning with The Great
Train Robbery in 1903, Western films have gained international many parts of Europe and Mexico in
addition to the United States. One classic example of a Western feature (full length) film is True Grit
(1969), which stars John Wayne as the strong, memorable protagonist, Rooster Cogburn. Although the
film follows many filmic conventions regarding the formula of the Western genre, it also defies certain
conventions, thus serving as an example of a revisionist Western. These qualities also carry over into
the recent remake, True Grit (2010), which contains the same plot as the original while making use of
modern cinematic techniques in order to make the film more exciting, dramatic and accessible for a
modern audience. Prior to the release of True Grit (1969), John Wayne had played starring roles in
countless other Western films, including Stagecoach (1939) and The Searchers (1956). By the 1960s,
John Wayne gained vast recognition among many audiences as the definitive celluloid icon of the
American Western. John Wayne?s popularity within Hollywood grew largely during the 1950s, during
the rise of revisionist western films. In addition, the film?s setting is consistent with previous films in
the genre. A small portion of the plot is set in a small town in Arkansas, while the bulk is set in the
sporadically populated, mountainous Indian Territory. There are several scenes in which

Human Dominion and Separation from Nature
Other than Native American works, most of the works read for the class seemed to stem from or at
least were influenced by some vein of Christian thinking. This can t be helped because the western
world has been influenced by Christianity for centuries, and the foundational values still recognized in
this country in particular are protestant, even if they re not blatantly proclaiming the faith. In fact, we
even read through a few chapters of the Bible because the common theme and justification of human
dominion over nature stems from the primary story of the Bible in Genesis. This theme is often a
subject of great sadness or annoyance for nature writers like Wordsworth and Mary Oliver; while
authors like John Muir and Bill McKibben, whom do profess to the Christian faith, still see nature as
something spiritual because dominion means not just given authority, but also given the responsibility
for its protection. The first chapter of Genesis establishes humanity s place in God s creation. Verse 26
in particular; Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea...and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.
The entire verse basically gives human authority over every genus on the planet, putting us at the top
of the food chain as it were (though in the Garden humans were forbade to eat meat). A lot of people
seem to see this verse as one of the causes of the human superiority

Getting Enough Calcium through Food Essay example
The body s metabolism relies on minerals such as calcium to function properly. Calcium is not
produced in the body directly. Any food eaten is the sole source calcium, which makes up nearly 1.5%
of a person s total body weight. However, despite traditional understanding, calcium is not just found
in dairy related products. A variety of foods also provide calcium to the benefit of the body. Both
sources of calcium are detailed below.
Without a doubt, the best food sources of calcium include dairy products. Specifically, well purchased
and well known items such as milk, cheese, and yogurt provide nearly 100 to 400 mg of calcium per
cup of serving. Another popular choice is cottage cheese. One half cup of low fat cottage cheese ...

Cooking and Storage: 2 4 paragraphs
The relationship between vitamin d and calcium is inextricably linked. Recent research has discovered
when calcium intake is too low, vitamin D [triggers] a process in which stored calcium is mobilized
from the bones (Holick) to help with bone healing and reformation. Vitamin D acts in the body to
replenish low amounts of calcium. The skeletal system and the digestive tract can be tapped when the
blood calcium begins to fall...[and]...increase absorption of calcium from food [and] lost in urine
(Sizer 243). In sum, regular amounts of calcium are essential to good health in the body.
Unlike other minerals, calcium is considered to be a very stable mineral. Processes such as
pasteurization, heating, or drying...does not reduce availability of calcium (Ensminger and Ensminger
301). The mineral remains intact, regardless whether it is in ice cream, a boiled pudding, or a frozen
dairy item. For milk to retain its high calcium makeup, it is best stirred as it heats to incorporate the
calcium salts into the liquid (Ibid.).
Cooking other calcium rich food sources also must follow proper guidelines. For instance, vegetables
should be cooked by using small amounts of water, by keeping the sizes of the pieces as large as

Voter Suppression And Voting Suppression
What is voter suppression?
The voter suppression strategy is used to influence the outcome of an election by dissuading voters
from exercising their right to vote. Voter suppression should not be comparable to campaigning
because the two differs significantly. Campaigning in its political sense is the ability to change voter s
likelihood of voting behavior to change their opinions through persuasion. Voter suppression on the
other hand attempts to reduce the number of voters by means of suppression.
History of voter suppression The United States first began to deal with the issue of voter suppression
during the Reconstruction. During Reconstruction freed slaves earned their right to vote and hold
office through the fifteenth amendment in 1870. In 1877, Democrats, known as Dixiecrats, began to
impose laws that were designed to suppress the African American vote or better known as Jim Crow
Laws. The Jim Crow voting laws required the freedmen to pass literacy tests that they were unable to
pass because of no formal education because of their status of slaves. Many states created poll taxes,
which many poor Americans, white and black, were unable to pay. Many precincts made their voting
precincts white only so that blacks would have nowhere to cast their votes. The Jim Crow voter
suppression tactics were so successful that only three percent of African Americans in the south were
registered to vote in 1940. Although African American males were given the right to vote in

the developing process of the disease is the same, which occurs during the remodeling cycle of the
bone in which disruption of formation and resorption takes place (Crowther Radulewics McCance,

Cleopatra as a Historical Figure
In hieroglyphs, the name reads Kleopadra . It is a name which in Greek means Glory of Her Race
(Weigall, 44). It is a name belonging to a woman who has transcended the boundaries of time so that
we may know her story. What better way to describe Cleopatra, the last Queen of Egypt, Ruler of the
Nile, sent from the Gods themselves to lead her people, than Glory of Her Race ? Cleopatra, the last
ruling descendant of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, has arguably unparalleled fame as a female historical
figure.

Shakespeare s play, Antony and Cleopatra, shows this juxtaposition of the East and West as well,
especially through the characters in the play. The opulence and sensuality of the East is personified by
Cleopatra, whereas the moral solidity and observance of duty is beheld in Octavius. Mark Antony is
torn between the two ideals, his duty as a Roman, and his obvious desire to indulge in the hedonistic
way of the East.
This exoticness of Cleopatra leads to a general view of her, both by the Egyptian and Roman
populace, as having an other worldliness quality about, a strange mysticism. This is reinforced by
Cleopatra s constant referral of herself as Isis, one of the more powerful Egyptian goddesses.
Cleopatra is said to ...have attired herself...that which was supposed... to have been worn by the
mother deity Isis (Weigall, 45). By identifying herself with a goddess, Cleopatra is merely continuing
the custom that the Pharaohs of old used to practice. Isis, whose Latin epithet, Stella Maris, means
Star Of The Sea, is of particular importance to Cleopatra not only because she is an extremely strong,
religious image of feminine power, but she is also often depicted as a personification of the throne
itself, thus

maiden voyage in an attempt to provide answers to the age old question that titles his article, What

story of the Titanic s trip in April of 1912. The readers are reminded that the massive vessel was

a few of the hull s compartments were destroyed and the ship quickly began to take on water. The
entire vessel sank in three short hours, and the exact causes of the disaster are still not fully

The Causes And Effects Of Poverty In The United States
Poverty, a common problem in the US and yet, something that people consistently overlook. We are
often unaware of the magnitude of poverty in the U.S and sometimes even disregard it. People living
in destitution are at greater risk for behavioral and mental problems. Children or Teens who live in
poverty are prone to poor academic achievements, become school dropouts , or grow subject to abuse
or neglect. People in poverty also occasionally show signs of anxiety and depression.
As of the 2016 census, approximately 323.1 million people reside in the United States of America.
14.5% of those Americans living in poverty, meaning that 45.3 million Americans are affected by
poverty, an immense increase from 8 million in 2008. 97.3 million people who occupy the U.S are
considered low income and 41 million people struggle with hunger in the United States. 1 in every 2
people are considered poor or receive low income. Poverty is not equal among various demographics,
for instance, in 2015, 12% of men lived in poverty in the USA, and 14.8% of women lived in poverty
and among non citizens the poverty rate is 22.8%.
60% percent of all jobs produced between 2008 and 2012 are paid minimum wage. For every 4
unemployed Americans, 1 job is available. In 2012 the black unemployment was 14.0. Income in the

As a Filipina living as an expatriate, I have travelled and lived around the world and meeting new

This law is the exercise imposed by the government and control by military authorities over the
civilian population. Martial law is the declared either when there is near violent civil unrest or major
natural disasters, however most countries use a different legal construct like state of emergency . The
imposition of martial law accompanies curfews, the suspension of civil laws, civil rights, habeas
corpus, and the application of military justice to civilians. Civilians defying martial law may be
subjected to military tribunals.
Martial law in the Philippines was publicly declared nationwide on September 23, 1972. Around
7:15pm, he broadcasted in television his proclamation of Martial law and placing the control under the
Armed Forces of the Philippines. In this situation, the president declared martial law because there
was near violent civil unrest in the Philippine society. It was lifted on January 17, 1981.
President Ferdinand Marcos was holding the presidency of the Philippines for 20 years from 1966
1986. He ruled the country as a dictator and is known for running a corrupt and undemocratic regime.
The declaration of martial in 1972 by President Marcos was his claim that it was the last defence
against the rising disorder caused by increasing student demonstrations, the alleged threats of
communist insurgency by the Communist Party of the Philippines and the Muslim Separatists
Movement of the Moro National Liberation Front.

Neolithic Era Vs Paleolithic Essay
The Paleolithic Era V.S. The Neolithic Era
I am writing this paper to explain the intricate differences between the arts and cultural backgrounds
of the Paleolithic Era and the Neolithic Era. This paper will help to better inform the reader on how
the two time periods used art to express their purpose and lifestyles. My main goal is to simply
differentiate the art tools and methods used throughout these two Eras by adding specific details and
hopefully painting a visual picture in the reader s mind.
The Paleolithic Era or (Old Stone Age) started around 2.6 million years ago and ended 10,000 years
ago. There were many human species in the Paleolithic era but only one species survived up until the
Neolithic Era (New Stone Age). Paleolithic Humans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Neolithic people had knowledge of farming and herding animals. These people were mainly
clothed in the skin of animals that they raised. Unlike the people of the Paleolithic era, the Neolithic
people were generally shorter and had lower life expectancies, however, the Neolithic woman
produced more children because the nomadic way of living was no longer practiced.
Art was very essential in both Eras. Art in the Paleolithic era was either portable or stationary. Their
art focused on attempts to control their environment by ritual mainly. The Paleolithic people used tools
made of wood, animal bones and stone to create works of art on the walls of their caves. They
believed to have animistic religious beliefs so they often decorated their dwellings with pictures of
deer mammoths and bison. They also made sculptures (Venus) using similar concepts.
The Neolithic Era basically introduced more of the human figures. They created images of human
figures more than they did animals. In this Era, tools such as stone, vessel and woven baskets and clay
were used. For sculptures they used stone and clay. The Neolithic people focused more on pottery and
architecture when portraying their artwork. Settled life started the development of pottery and
permanent architecture. Moreover, the Neolithic people were the first to apply pigment to a manmade

Ethical and Legal Debates on Assisted Suicide and...
One of the greatest miracles in life, is life itself, but where is life there s death. So as unexpected as

Which would grant the patient death by natural causes.
Whether your for or against euthanasia or assisted suicide, one major part between life and death is the
cost of living. The price for End of Life care and life support has skyrocket over the past few years
because of technology. Although technology has improved over the years on sustaining life, it has not
been proving to cure certain illness, and the cost of certain machines can well but medical bills in the
thousands. In the United States alone, millions of people have no medical insurance, and the elderly,
the poor and minorities are often denied adequate treatment thats needed. Even doctors are being
forced by HMOs to lower the care for patients who can t afford it. Drugs for assisted suicide cost on
an average of $75 to $100, which makes them far less expensive than supplying medical care.
However, it s the patient that makes the ultimate decision between suffering with disease, or accepting
euthanasia/ assisted suicide. A person has the right to die with dignity, and since there is many
successful cases of assisted suicide a patient can only feel confident on making a big decision. For
example the death of P. Matheny was widely known as a successful assisted suicide. P. Matheny was

The Election Year Is A Great Leader Of Our Country Essay
Every four years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, a Presidential Election is held to
determine who the new leader of our country will be. The election year is a very important time;
however, this year it is more crucial to cast your vote than previous years, simply because of one
particular candidate running must be prevented from becoming president. Most officials running for
this type of position are humans you can trust, believe in, and count on. However, the particular
candidate as mentioned earlier, Hilary Clinton, is not a person with these three qualities. Not only can
she not be trusted, believed in, or counted on, she is also a liar, a murderer, and a manipulating nasty
woman. Hilary has been the cause of many deaths, including those murdered in Benghazi and trillions
of abortions throughout the United States. She has been found guilty of releasing thousands of
confidential, government emails to the public, and she has no protection plan for the safety of our
country and our families against illegal emigration. These key points should all influence American
individuals to vote against Hilary Clinton, because she is the worst candidate in America s voting
history.
A lot of people don t educate themselves to learn about what is going on in our country. They don t
take the time to see for themselves who is involved in what and what decisions are being made daily.
They simply just live life oblivious to their surroundings, especially when it comes to

A point in the story when Rukmani accepts unavoidable circumstances, and does nothing to stop it, is when Kunthi blackmails Nathan into giving her their rice (Markandaya 85). This shows that Rukmani does not fight for what she believes in because she could have went looking for Kunthi to get her rice back, but she did not. Therefore, Rukmani lets others control her. Another time in Nectar in a Sieve when the protagonist accepts changes that occur in her life is when Raja is killed (Markandaya 90). Ophelia is the only truly innocent victim in Hamlet. This essay will examine Ophelia s downward spiral from a chaste maiden to nervous wreck. From the beginning of the play, in Act I Scene iii, Laertes and Polonius are trying to convince her that Hamlet does not love her and only is interested in her so he can sleep with her. Laertes says Perhaps he loves you now, ...... His greatness weighed, his will is not his own. He is telling Ophelia that she is likely to have her heart broken because of Hamlet s high birth. Ophelia s downfall continues throughout the play, and her final plunge into the waters of madness and suicide culminate around her father s death. Hamlet, while talking threateningly to his mother, accidentally slays Polonius who was hiding behind the curtain in his mother s room. Hamlet thought it was Claudius he heard coming to his mother s aid when she cried for help and lunged at the curtain with his sword, killing Polonius. O, I am slain! were his final words. The murderer, in the case of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre, was socially awkward and reserved , as Ben Stein puts it in his article in The American Spectator (Stein). Perhaps our killer had a similar background to many of our American youth. With increasing trends in teen depression and suicide, and the implementation of more and more prescription anti depressants and anxiety medications, there are adverse side effects. Peter Breggin, in an excerpt from his article on Naturalnews.com, states that psychiatric drugs, including antidepressants, stimulants, and tranquilizing sedatives, can cause violence (Breggin). While this assumption does hold true in some cases, are we really to be blaming the drug for the acts of the human, already unstable and unreliable? And are we to take a true monster like the Sandy Hook shooter and compare him to any troubled young man, dealt a bad hand and struck with anxiety? Stein includes a quote from John R. School is a place to learn, not to exhibit fashion, wealth or privilege. Unfortunately, now kids spend so much time being stressed about popularity that they hardly have the energy to learn anything valuable. Parents as well can benefit because buying uniforms is much cheaper and less stressful than spending large amounts of money and time purchasing varied clothes, usually for more than one child at a time. It is cheaper to wear school uniforms because you only have to buy one or two sets of clothes for the entire year, whereas most people buy up to 20 outfits in a uniform free school. School uniforms take the pressure off students to pay top dollar for clothes, according to Reginald Wilson, a senior scholar at the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. I think it does lower the cost of clothes, and kids don t emphasize clothes as much when they re all wearing the same thing, Wilson said. Certainly the competition to wear the best shoes or the best sweaters and so forth has been prevalent in school ever since I was in school, and the poor kids felt inferior. This can t be helped because the western world has been influenced by Christianity for centuries, and the foundational values still recognized in this country in particular are protestant, even if they re not blatantly proclaiming the faith. In fact, we even read through a few chapters of the Bible because the common theme and justification of human dominion over nature stems from the primary story of the Bible in Genesis. This theme is often a subject of great sadness or annoyance for nature writers like Wordsworth and Mary Oliver; while authors like John Muir and Bill McKibben, whom do profess to the Christian faith, still see nature as something spiritual because dominion means not just given authority, but also given the responsibility for its protection. The first chapter of Genesis establishes humanity s place in God s creation. Verse 26 in particular; Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea...and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. The skeletal system and the digestive tract can be tapped when the blood calcium begins to fall...[and]...increase absorption of calcium from food [and] lost in urine (Sizer 243). In sum, regular amounts of calcium are essential to good health in the body. Unlike other minerals, calcium is considered to be a very stable mineral. Processes such as pasteurization, heating, or drying...does not reduce availability of calcium (Ensminger and Ensminger 301). The mineral remains intact, regardless whether it is in ice cream, a boiled pudding, or a frozen dairy item. For milk to retain its high calcium makeup, it is best stirred as it heats to incorporate the calcium salts into the liquid (Ibid.). Cooking other calcium rich food sources also must follow proper guidelines. For instance, vegetables should be cooked by using small amounts of water, by keeping the sizes of the pieces as large as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Voter Suppression And Voting Suppression What is voter suppression? The voter suppression strategy is used to influence the outcome of an election by dissuading voters from exercising their right to vote. Voter suppression should not be comparable to campaigning because the two differs significantly. Campaigning in its political sense is the ability to change voter s likelihood of voting behavior to change their opinions through persuasion. Voter suppression on the other hand attempts to reduce the number of voters by means of suppression. History of voter suppression The United States first began to deal with the issue of voter suppression during the Reconstruction. During Reconstruction freed slaves earned their right to vote and hold office through the fifteenth amendment in 1870. In 1877, Democrats, known as Dixiecrats, began to impose laws that were designed to suppress the African American vote or better known as Jim Crow Laws. The Jim Crow voting laws required the freedmen to pass literacy tests that they were unable to pass because of no formal education because of their status of slaves. Many states created poll taxes, which many poor Americans, white and black, were unable to pay. Many precincts made their voting precincts white only so that blacks would have nowhere to cast their votes. The Jim Crow voter suppression tactics were so successful that only three percent of African Americans in the south were registered to vote in 1940. It is a name belonging to a woman who has transcended the boundaries of time so that we may know her story. What better way to describe Cleopatra, the last Queen of Egypt, Ruler of the Nile, sent from the Gods themselves to lead her people, than Glory of Her Race ? Cleopatra, the last ruling descendant of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, has arguably unparalleled fame as a female historical figure. Yet we must ask ourselves: why? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare s play, Antony and Cleopatra, shows this juxtaposition of the East and West as well, especially through the characters in the play. The opulence and sensuality of the East is personified by Cleopatra, whereas the moral solidity and observance of duty is beheld in Octavius. Mark Antony is torn between the two ideals, his duty as a Roman, and his obvious desire to indulge in the hedonistic way of the East. This exoticness of Cleopatra leads to a general view of her, both by the Egyptian and Roman populace, as having an other worldliness quality about, a strange mysticism. This is reinforced by Cleopatra s constant referral of herself as Isis, one of the more powerful Egyptian goddesses. Cleopatra is said to ...have attired herself...that which was supposed... to have been worn by the mother deity Isis (Weigall, 45). By identifying herself with a goddess, Cleopatra is merely continuing the custom that the Pharaohs of old used to practice. Isis, whose Latin epithet, Stella Maris, means Star Of The Sea, is of particular importance to Cleopatra not only because she is an extremely strong, religious image of feminine power, but she is also often depicted as a personification of the throne itself, thus ... This paper will help to better inform the reader on how the two time periods used art to express their purpose and lifestyles. My main goal is to simply differentiate the art tools and methods used throughout these two Eras by adding specific details and hopefully painting a visual picture in the reader s mind. Unlike the people of the Paleolithic era, the Neolithic people were generally shorter and had lower life expectancies, however, the Neolithic woman produced more children because the nomadic way of living was no longer practiced. Art was very essential in both Eras. Art in the Paleolithic era was either portable or stationary. Their art focused on attempts to control their environment by ritual mainly. The Paleolithic people used tools made of wood, animal bones and stone to create works of art on the walls of their caves. They believed to have animistic religious beliefs so they often decorated their dwellings with pictures of deer mammoths and bison. They also made sculptures (Venus) using similar concepts. The Neolithic Era basically introduced more of the human figures. They created images of human figures more than they did animals. In this Era, tools such as stone, vessel and woven baskets and clay were used. For sculptures they used stone and clay. In the United States alone, millions of people have no medical insurance, and the elderly, the poor and minorities are often denied adequate treatment thats needed.
