The Birthmark Literary Analysis
In The Birthmark , a short story by Nathanial Hawthorne, the use of the archetypal conflict Nature vs.
Science, the character of Damsel in Distress, and the symbol of the Incurable Wound show how easily
beauty is overlooked in the endeavor for perfection. The archetypal conflict of Nature vs. Science is
shown in Aylmer s intention to remove the birthmark, nature s constant reminder of human mortality,
from Georgiana s cheek. Aylmer believed that the birthmark might heighten Georgiana s beauty if it
wasn t her only visible imperfection, but on Georgiana s otherwise flawless complexion the birthmark
was nothing more than the fatal flaw of humanity...the ineludible gripe in which mortality clutches the
highest and purest of earthly mould, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Georgiana had always lived with the birthmark, and was quite fond of its charm. Many people in the
town believe it was a fairy s handprint left to sway all hearts; to them the mark only magnified her
appeal. The mark s charm had rarely been questioned by anyone other than the jealous women of the
town, and its peculiar nature had once intrigued Aylmer and amplified his attraction to Georgiana. He
begged for her hand in marriage, but soon after they were wed, he queried whether Georgiana had
ever considered having the birthmark removed. She was hurt by the implication that the mark
depreciated her and grew upset with her husband. As time passed, Aylmer continued to stare at the
mark, unable to keep his eyes from wandering to it. This continued until Georgiana was no longer able
to ignore the way his eyes were always fixated on this sole imperfection, the crimson hand that kept
him up at night and plagued his dreams. She asked Aylmer to remove the mark, or take her life
because she no longer wanted to live if she had to live with the mark. She preferred death to the harsh
scrutiny from her husband. The symbolic meaning of the Incurable Wound is used to show the
psychological impact of Georgiana s insecurity about the birthmark because of Aylmer s lack of
acceptance of her natural beauty. Research has primarily focused on the consequences of exposure to
beauty advertising

Justice Is Thrasymachus The Stronger
At the beginning of the debate on what justice is; Thrasymachus shoves himself into the dialogue to
say that justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger (Plato 14 [I]). In the state, a ruler is
considered the stronger, therefore what is advantageous to them is just. The laws made to be beneficial
to the ruler are just, so it is just for their subjects to follow these rules and if they disobey it is
considered unjust. This can be said since we can assume that the ruler is the strongest in any situation.
When asked if rulers can make mistakes, Thrasymachus agrees. In relation to the last statement, if a
ruler was to create a law in error, hence the law is disadvantageous to the ruler, and the subjects
followed this law, justice is served on one part. However, since the law is disadvantageous to the ruler,
it would be unjust. The other interlocutors interpret Thrasymachus statement to mean that what is just
is what the ruler believes to be advantageous to themselves since it was agreed upon that the ruler of
the state is the stronger. Thrasymachus, angry with this conclusion, clarifies his agreement to: A ruler,
insofar as he is a ruler, never makes errors and unerringly decrees what is best for ... Show more

Based on his view of justice, injustice rules the truly simple and just, and those it rules do what is to
the advantage of the other and stronger, and they make the one they serve happy, but themselves not at
all (Plato 19 [I]). Thrasymachus stands to say that injustice commands the weak who obey and serve
and benefit the stronger, while they do not benefit at all. Injustice serves those who are unjust, while
those who just do not benefit from being just. He concludes, therefore, that it is more favorable to be
unjust, rather than just. This stands to question why the weaker would be just if they do not profit from

Why Are Cities An Essential Part Of Civilization Questions...
QUESTION 2.
Why are cities an essential part of civilization? Has urban life been the same in different civilizations
over time? Why or why not? What accounts for the similarities and differences in various places and
eras? To write a successful essay on these questions, you need to integrate material from each of the
following chapters in our textbook: Chapters 3, 6, and 11.
WHY CITIES ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF CIVILIZATION.
Civilization refers to a complex human society with its own social organization and culture; where the
entire society is educated and their way of life improved. It is characterized by people practicing
agriculture and settling in cities. Before a human community grows to this level of sophistication and
a highly organized social order, various entities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over exploitation of the environment. vii. Cultural Diffusion Due to trading activities, Cultures,
religions, and diseases spread easily particularly in areas around the trade routes
Civilizations were highly dependent on the environment. The following act as the main factors that
have contributed to contrasts in different eras and locations during civilization:
Rate of urban development.
In all civilizations, Egypt and Mesopotamia were the most developed of all, therefore they had more
complex administrative features as well as more development in the entire population. Agricultural
surplus alongside trade is what led to growth of these cities as it also contributed to increase in
population.
Activities and culture of the civilization.
Agriculture was common in all civilizations since only cultures that were based on crop growing
became complex civilizations. Others that were involved in fishing and nomadic pastoralism did not
become civilizations. Since techniques of food production, storage and preservation were adapted, it
restricted those who did not practice farming and hence they did not grow in complexity and size.

Compare And Contrast Scouts And Girl Scouts
The Boy Scouts of America and the Girls Scouts of the USA are both nonprofit organizations that can
be the most wonderful experiences in one s life. Being a Boy Scout or Girl Scout can help the youth
develop maturity and character, as they grow with age and enter adulthood. Through the process of
volunteering and showing leadership skills, Boy Scouts of America and Girls Scouts of the USA are
both life changing organizations. One involved in any of the two organizations will create unity
throughout their community and uphold a legacy. While the youth involved in one of the two
organizations earn achievements and countless awards, scouting can be utilized to create an

prove that she s worthy, she will automatically proceed in the organization based upon her grade level.
Another contrast between Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are the most noteworthy honors that a scout can
be awarded. While being in any of these two Scouting organizations, a scout can earn numerous
awards. The highest award that a scout can be presented with, nonetheless, differs between
organizations. In Boy Scouts, the highest achievement a Boy Scout can receive is an Eagle Scout.
Rather than an Eagle Scout being an award, it is the highest position in the rank system. Becoming an
Eagle Scout takes much work and dedication to the organization. One receiving this award will have
to meet several requirements. One must show that they are progressing in the program through their
leadership, service, and outdoor skills (Trail to Eagle). Moreover, in order to become an Eagle Scout, a
Boy Scout must first move forward in the ranking system. Although there are more than 130 merit
badges that a Boy Scout can receive, they must earn 21 to be eligible become an

Pompeii was a City in Italy which overall has a great significance in Roman culture. Pompeii was not
famous for its rise or its rule but its destruction. Pompeii was a picture perfect world full of culture
and rich history, It was destroyed in AD 79 by a Volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius. It was a
symbol of Roman culture and has a great influence on the future even though it existed so long ago.
Life in Pompeii was over all serene, in the Italian countryside of Campania. The city was fairly large
and was about five miles southeast of base of Mount Vesuvius. ( Gracco, Tiberio. Welcome to Ancient

The town itself had many temples devoted to their gods. The city even had an amphitheatre, which is
the oldest of its kind dating back to 80 BC. The people of Pompeii had a serene living condition and

The destruction of Pompeii came about when Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24 AD 79. This
eruption was not your stereotypical eruption. The mountain exploded in a long smoldering burst of
pumice ash and rock. The eruption covered Pompeii and the neighboring city of Herculaneum in over
thirteen feet of pumice and ash, burning and destroying almost all of the city s. The eruption was said
to last over twenty four hours. Turning day to night with clouds of dust and ash. ¨100 miles per hour

people were unprepared, just standing and watching the volcano until the eruption was on top of them.
Many people thought it was just a tremor or earthquake before the mountain exploded and it was too
late. Many people did try and escape. Escaping by boat was impossible, the only real way to escape
was to go south away from the volcano. There was mass panic in the heart of the city and most people

did. Kolf was a sport with characteristics of golf and ice hockey played in the Netherlands. It was
played with a stick and a ball on frozen canals in the winter times. In this game, players took turns
using iron headed clubs to strike a small ball toward a target, which was typically a stake or a hole.
During the winter, kolf was typically played on ice, though it took place on city streets and courts for
the rest of the year. Kolf was a short game and took as long as a game of putt putt. When the game

something I grew up being told was a good thing my whole life. It was one of them things that

Paolin Child Abuse In Casanova s Venice
Larry Wolff. Paolina s Innocence: Child Abuse in Casanova s Venice.
1785, in Venice, Gaetano Franceschini was arrested for having had sexual contact with an eight year
old girl whose name was Paolina. Franceschini , a sixty year old man that had moved to Venice from
Vicenza, where his family made their fortune in the manufacture of silk. His suspected victim,
Paolina, was the daughter of a poor laundress from the immigrant Friulian community in Venice.
Franceschini took on the girl to become his servant, a spent one night in the man s house sleeping in
his bed. Another servant in Franceschini s house, at which point the priest decided to take Paolina

The population that surrounded the environment of the coffee house and may of the characters
commented that Franceschini was a sexual man, which made his story about having Paolina in his bed
even more scandalous for the characters in the book to gossip about more. One character in particular
stood out to the reader, the coffee house owners wife, Francesca Ravasin. She was in a way the female
ringleader, and the queen of being noise and able to collect the gossip. She kept a close eye from her
balcony window of all that went on the whole building of Calle della Cortesia. The testimony that
Francesca described Franceschini as a sensual man, on page 85.The window who lived downstairs
said that he also used to bring girls home of a tender age. These testimonies portrayed Franceschini
was someone who aggravate this scandal to happen with having girls stay with him, as his servants.
Through all of the testimonies from the people that lived around the area and went to the coffee shop,
the trail really point out to the reader the adult violation of an innocence of a child. Today as in Venice
in the late 18th century, a sexually abused child is supposed to have been robbed of their childhood,
which consists of an sexless time, and no one understood what the term innocence meant, or how to
could be taken away, Wolff write the chimera of innocence with deems to childhood still in power on

that adults close to her had manipulated her statement. The judges knew that Paolina was innocent by
the way she used childish language. Paolina used very simple words that proved she did not
understand sexual matters. Especially when she explained to the judges what masturbation was ,and

Vyse and a new Partnership The evolving partnership of Charles Vyse and Barbara Waller (1949 1951)
would prove to be exacting and industrious. Working at the Cheyne Row studio they produced a
number of animal and figure models, alongside a range of Chinese inspired high fired, ash glazed
stoneware vessels. Whether by design or accident, much of the figurative work of Vyse and Waller
partnership, would in the future, prove problematical for collectors. However, at this remove, it is
difficult to attribute some figures and vessels, either jointly or individually. Furthermore, it is
impossible to assign specific tasks, such as modelling, decorating, and glazing, to either of the
partners. To compound the conflict of attribution, there are occasions when both Vyse and Waller have

Also an explanation of the rationale of a relatively small period collaborative work, exhibited singly
and jointly by Vyse and Waller, will involve the reader in a certain amount of time travelling. It would
appear that such was the working relationship of Vyse and Miss Waller that they thought little of
interpreting each other s work as they saw to be artistically appropriate. For instance, in the illustration
Fig. 168, Miss Waller appears to be working on the clay model of a Shire horse. However, archived in
the modern ceramic collection of the V A museum is a Temmoku glazed stoneware edition of this
same Shire horse, which has inscribed on the base, Charles Vyse/Barbara Waller/Chelsea/1950.
Therefore, it is fair to assume, therefore, the edition of Shire horse, conserved in the modern ceramic
collection of the V A, Vyse had retained the moulds of original model by Waller, and after it had been

October 29th 2014 The images of the Jewish people within are represented through the tainting of

anti Semitism and religious traditions. One of many mentioned stereotypes, is the perception that all

Dualism In The Metamorphosis
Duality is a theme prevalent in many novels and stories that explores concepts such as good versus
evil or conflicts of inner self. It can sometimes manifest itself through a transformation that allows
readers to understand these types of complex conflicts in a more physical sense. In Franz Kafka s The
Metamorphosis and Robert Louis Stevenson s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there is a
theme of undergoing a physical transformation that affects the two main characters of each story in
drastically negative ways. The use of magical realism and the archetypal journey of transformation
allows for both authors to create a shadow self of their main characters.
The Metamorphosis explores a series of physical, emotional, and psychological transformations that
impact the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, as well as his family and how they treat him. Unlike other
stories that depict the archetypal journey of the transformation, Gregor s change occurs in the very
beginning of the story as he wakes up one morning from unsettling dreams [and finds] himself
changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin (Kafka 1). Though his external appearance has been
altered, his mind remains intact as he begins questioning how this could have happened to him and
how he is going to get to work. The discord between mind body and mind leaves Gregor in a state of
unrest. As the story progresses, Gregor begins acting more and more like the insect that he has
become, but his mind never fully copes

Fictional Character Analysis
Three Fictional Characters Have you ever found yourself relate to a fictional character? The three

diary and fantasize about her crush Jimmy Pesto. Usually that is what makes her different from
everybody else, she s still has some inner child in her while others have gone straight to adolescence.

the town of Parkersburg. In the beginning of this article Jenkins explains the importance of the field to
Ed Thomas. Every morning Ed walked the field, looking for any imperfection to correct. Dave Meyer,
the Apilington Parkersburg principal said, It s probably the best field in the state. The field was so
import to Ed Thomas and he took such great care of it that it was even named after him. The field has

Theories Of The Great Man Theory
Great man theory
This theory evolved around the 19th century, and was originally proposed by Thomas Carlyle. The
great man theory is basically assuming that, only an individual that was born with greatness is indeed
great. The focus on great leaders were limited to only men, as women were not seen as leaders in any
way. Leaders are born and not made (leadership theories). From this statement, Thomas Carlyle is
making it clear that a person cannot be made a great leader by any extrinsic means, but it must be
intrinsic traits of leadership that this person was born with, that can enable him to become a great
leader. Great leaders will arise when there is a great need (leadership theories). By this, Carlyle meant
that you may see a great leader every day without even knowing that this person is a great leader, but
as soon as the need arises for a great leader you will then recognize the individual that was gifted to be
the great leader in completing that specific task. This theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This leadership theory argues that there is no specific way of leading, rather a leadership style should
be based on the situation. This means that when a person is set to lead, they will perform at maximum
level, however as soon as they are taken out of their element this level of performance may fall. Also,
a leadership style that worked well in one situation may not work well in another situation and so it s
based on how a leader adjust in various situations. To a certain extent contingency leadership theories
are an extension of the trait theory, in the sense that human traits are related to the situation in which
the leaders exercise their leadership. (leadership theories). I agree with this statement, since an
individual in leadership mode would indeed possess better characteristic traits than when they are not
leading. This theory also assumed that leaders are more likely to express their leadership when they
feel that their followers will be

Marigolds By Eugenia Collier Analysis
Marigolds by Eugenia Collier is a personal narrative of the challenges that adolescents face with
coming of age. The author is able to accurately capture the voice of her younger self using literary
devices such as imagery, juxtaposition, and diction. The author uses these literary devices to give the
reader a precise representation of the struggles she surpassed, which pushed her towards adulthood.
The first literary device the author uses to communicate the endeavors of childhood is juxtaposition.
For example, Eugenia Collier uses juxtaposition to compare her memories of poverty and sadness to
her memories absence of wealth and fortune, When I think of the home town of my youth, all that I

ignorance of immaturity and a brilliant use of imagery. Collier creates the scene using descriptive
words and attaches them to the reader s mind, one can see the torrid flowers and disfigured house.
These images capture the author s feelings of disarray and discombobulation, which all contribute to
Eugenia Collier s voice. These feelings lead to the character uprising to adulthood. The last literary
device Eugenia Collier exercises to deepen her sensation of despair and disgrace is diction. Collier
influences her words to carve her emotions into the reader, one can sense the feelings of puzzlement
and the irascibleness it evokes. For instance, in this quote the reader can grasp Eugenia s voice
through her use of eloquent words I indeed lost my mind, for all the smoldering emotions of that

of our poverty and degradation, the bewilderment of being neither child nor woman and yet both at

Social Reaction Theory And Feminist Theory Of Crimes
Social Reaction Theory and Feminist Theory of Crimes are the subject theories I am going to review,
examine, and explain. I will be discussing the evolution of social reaction and labeling theory, which
is mainly concerned with how individuals personal identities are highly influenced by the way that
society has a tendency to classify them as offenders. I will also be reviewing the various forms of
feminist theories, which began as reactions to the lack of reasonable theorizing about why females
commit crime and why the tend to be treated far more contradictorily by the criminal justice system.
Here, I will explain these various theories with more attention on how they thoroughly transformed
the way that the crime and law were viewed. Both theories had become popular in the 1960 s and the
1970 s due to the society looking for theories that fixed the blame for criminal offending on
government authorities. These theories also both share a common theme, by accentuating the use of
the criminal justice system to target or label certain types of groups such as lower class, minorities,
and women, as criminals while protecting the ones with power such as white males.
Theoretical Background: Social reaction theory is also referred to as labeling theory, which is mainly
classified by how personal identities are influenced by the way authority categorizes the offenders.
The labeling results in individuals authenticating their place as criminals by developing the
seriousness of

They were the pilotis, the roof garden, the free plan, the elongated window and the free façade. These
five topics were essentially very new ideas at the time and were regarded as the cutting edge in design
(Von Moos 70). Corbusier used all of these elements in his Villa Savoye located in Paris, France,
which was designed in the purist fashion. In order to incorporate the idea of purity into the structure,
the building is painted completely white, exaggerating the smooth flow of the planar walls and
ceilings. Corbusier s intent was for the building to stay clean and completely white, devoid of stains to
resemble purity of spirit (Palermo, 23 Feb 1999). While he sticks to this idea, the function and
practicality of the building is lost because of all the extra work that has to go into the building to keep
it pristinely white. Apart from Villa Savoye, there are other buildings in which Corbusier sacrificed
function for aesthetics. In the Salvation Army building in Paris he attempted to design a building with
it s own form of heat control system by using different layers and thickness of glass to regulate air
currents. Instead of keeping a constant 18 degree temperature on the interior, the buildings glass
panels worked like a greenhouse and kept hot air inside making the interior practically uninhabitable
(Leatherbarrow and Mostafavi 30).
But for as many Corbusier buildings that were not functional, there were just as many that

Who Is Julius Caesar A Good Leader
Man of the Year
Julius Caesar was a great leader of Rome. He contained good writing skills and was a person who
would share his own achievements with other people. He was a military leader who conquered Gaul
and pieces of Switzerland. Julius fought many battles to make the countries stronger and have the
people live in a better environment. Caesar had armies of people that would back him up and would
do anything to keep their royal leader happy and strong. The great leader of Rome had good hygiene,
by having his face shaved and not letting his hair get too long, but keeping it closely cut. Not only was
Caesar a ladies man, but he had three wives. His first wife was Cornelia and they got married in 84

fighter but that he could be the, Man of the Year. Caesar had many ups and downs while fighting his
battles, but he never gave up on Rome or the people. He was a man that had good intentions and
wouldn t let enemies like Pompey tell him otherwise. Julius Caesar s play played a big role in how the
Senators killed Caesar. The play showed how Caesar really was and how he was going to rule Rome.
Brutus and Cassius betrayed Caesar and believed that Caesar would gain to much power if he was the
ruler of Rome and had the crown. Antony was Julius Caesar s only loyal friend and would do anything

Have you ever heard the quote Health is not valued till sickness comes, before? Or how about To keep
the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear, ?
From the fact that these quotes are from Thomas Fuller and Buddha, it s clear to see that throughout
the history of the world, plenty a focus has been on the topic of health. Over the years, questions like
these have been asked: How do we keep ourselves healthy? In which ways should we keep ourselves
healthy? Is healthcare a right, or a commodity? What is health ? Even today, these questions are hotly
debated. However, as our country becomes more industrialized, and healthcare becomes more

The first article I read was titled Education, Health, and the Default American Lifestyle, was written
by John Mirowsky and Catherine E. Ross. The main idea of this article was to articulate that education
has the ability to override the default American lifestyle, which has has three elements to it: displacing
human energy with mechanical energy, displacing household food production with industrial food
production, and displacing health maintenance with with medical dependency. Overall, the paper says
that in order to get out of an unhealthy lifestyle, you need to recognize the risks, which require some
form of higher education. According to this paper though, health is being vigorous, vital, and fit .
According to the Symbolic Interactionist, that isn t what every culture would say health is. Some may
say that being a little overweight is a sign of good fortune. While the paper does make a good
argument that education is the most important influence on health, I do not think is it the overall single
most important impact. One can be educated, but can still be turned down for a job, therefore leaving
them without insurance or health care. Education isn t always the deciding factor in what you re going
to get. Race, wealth, and gender also play a very big role, arguably bigger

The Battle of Hastings
The Battle of Hastings Why Did William Win?
On the 14th of October 1066, Duke William of Normandy defeated King Harold at the Battle of
Hastings. His win could be summed up by the fact that William was a better leader. Other factors that
contributed to William s victory include: William was better prepared, the English army was severely
weakened as Harold had just fought off an invasion in the North of England, and Harold made a fatal
mistake of prematurely entering the Battle of Hastings.
William was a better leader because although Harold had the upper hand in the battle and they were
losing, William managed to outwit and defeat the English. In the Bayeux Tapestry there is a scene
depicting that in the days preceding the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he was victorious in both of them, his troops were exhausted and did not have sufficient
energy to perform at their best. At the beginning of the battle, he managed get a good advantage he
positioned his troops on top of a hill, making it difficult for William to get to his army and attack him.
However, towards the end of the battle, William set a trap to draw Harold from his strong position and
he fell for it. Once they were on even ground, Harold s exhausted troops could not counter the attacks
from William s well trained and nourished army.
The biggest mistake Harold made was entering the Battle of Hastings too early. Harold lost some of
his best fighters at the Battle of Stamford Bridge earlier that day and the rest of his army were tired
out from their previous battle. When they finally arrived in the South, he was overconfident that he
could win this battle because of his recent victories. Because of his misjudgement, he decided to rush
into battle with exhausted and unprepared troops. Towards the end of the battle, he fell for the trap that
William had set, seeing as he was tired and his troops couldn t wait to finish them off and get a good
rest. If he had given his army only a few days rest and fed them like William had to his troops, his
chances of winning the battle would have been a lot higher.

The topic I chose to focus on for my research Masters Project is Exploring the therapeutic effects of
yogic techniques for stress management . I choose this topic because I am particularly interested in
stress and anxiety related mental and physical disorders with the use of yogic techniques. I also choose
this topic as little is known about the beneficial effects of a yoga practice and self care as an
alternative to medication interventions. Within the area of Social Care, the use of yogic techniques can
be extremely beneficial through creative approach for both service users and social care workers. The
need for alternative approaches to self care in the field of social care can be achieved through the use
of yogic techniques to help with stress management. The health benefits of yoga can help to reduce
stress and anxiety, enhancing mood and wellbeing and reduce the risk factors for chronic disorders.
Yogic techniques relocate focus and attention to the body and breath and can help to calm anxiety
while releasing physical tension. Overall, the use of yogic techniques can be used over a wide
population of people, varying in all ages, gender and physical limitations. The need for alternative
medicines in which individuals can learn self care rather than the use of medications is needed. Stress
and anxiety falls under the category of non communicable conditions. They are not infectious but are
long in duration and usually slowly progressive. They are estimated to account

Shipping And Environmental Pollution
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the study are as follows:
To study the impact of shipping on the global environment.
To study the causes and measures of shipping in mitigating the environment pollution.
4. METHODOLOGY:
The researcher has used the data and information which are already available. Based on the
requirements of the current research and also based the specifications of the regulatory bodies of the
world, the causes and measures of shipping in mitigating the environment pollution and also the
impact of shipping on the global environment have been studied.
5. SHIPS AND SHIPPING:
To discuss the relation among shipping, the environment, and sustainable development, it is useful to
define certain terminology. The main focus of shipping is on commercial ships, although many of the
emissions, impacts and measures are common to other sectors, such as leisure, research, and fishing.
The different regulations also require definitions of a ship. Different definitions exist, although
according to the glossary of the US Navy, a boat usually refers to small vessels that are often open,
whereas ships are vessels of considerable size that are intended for deep water navigation. A ship can
also be defined by its size: vessels longer than 12 m and wider than 4 m are referred to as ships, and
smaller vessels are known as boats. Common ship types can be identified according to their type of
use:
Container Ships: These vessels carry most of the world s manufactured

Common Themes in Poetry Essay
Common Themes in Poetry
After reading and analysing numerous poems, I have chosen two examples of the famous Irish Poet,
Seamus Heaney s work: Follower and
Mid Term Break . Both poems relate to the poet s past, and are certainly associated with a specific loss
of a loved one one a literal loss, and the other a subconscious loss.
Mid Term Break , which I found to be a very touching and poignant poem, describes the loss of the
poet s younger brother, Christopher when Heaney was a child, hence the poem is of a childhood
tragedy as well as a loss. It s set in three places the introduction is situated in the college sick bay; the
main body of the poem is set in

small treasure; a small treasure who s absence has caused the strongest of rocks to crumble into an

A double meaning is presented in the final line of the second stanza:
Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow
The hard blow may be referring to the actual blow that killed
Christopher (as he was killed by a car), or the fact that it s a hard blow to the family. Either way, one
fact becomes apparent: the Heaney family have the support and love of everyone around them, but
that doesn t counteract for the tragic loss of Christopher it may help clean the wound, but the scar will
forever be visible. We also attain the knowledge, due to his very personal identity, that Big Jim Evans
is a family friend, and that he himself is shaken by the situation considering his very plain and yet
meaningful comment. Again, the sadness and incredibility of the incident is underlined not only
family members are grieving.
Another detection of change is seen in the third stanza, and this time it s a very uncomfortable change:
I was embarrassed

This plan would result in a dearth of money needed for the government funded program as employers
chose high deductible private plans over the federal one. This would result in a lower standard of

the world have implemented national health care systems to properly protect their populace. It is past
time that the United States do the same.
A single payer national health care program could save American?s billions of dollars currently being
spent on health care and insurance. A 2000 report by John Sheils and Randall Haught of the Lewin

majority of savings from this would come from vast reductions in administrative costs associated with
insurance companies and the filing of claims. Sheils also reports that the average family would spend
261 dollars less each year on health costs (7). John Canham Clyne notes in his book The Rational

Improving Reaction Time
Reaction time is how much time it takes to react or respond to a stimulant. It is taken by the elapsed
time between the beginning of the application of the stimulant and the beginning of an organism s
reaction it. Atoms carry the charge of electricity and when the nerve impulse starts, it flows through
the channels in the membrane. This changes the charge to positive from the resting stage to its
negative charge. It then carries a nerve impulse through the cell axon into the synapse, causing
neurotransmitters to be released into the synaptic cleft. Reaction time is genetically passed down,
which demonstrates how improving reaction time could be difficult since it can only be improved by
10 20 percent with exercise or practice. One way to help increase reaction time would be having
caffeine in your body because it stimulates adrenaline to be produced and increase improvement of
percentage. Neurons are particular cells that transmit signals to the brain and are an important building
block of the central nervous system. Neurons have action potential which is caused by ion channels
that shut when the membrane potential close the resting potential. It then begins depolarization, which
allows sodium ions to produce more membrane potential, allowing more channels to open. ... Show

Exercise allows certain neurotransmitters to be released in the brain to relieve mental and physical
pain. It does this by exerting its effects to the brain through several mechanisms. Any time of aerobic
exercise boosts neural connections by increasing the amount of dendrite connections between each
neuron. Exercise has an effect on reaction time because of the increased circulation in the brain, which
allows the body to process information quicker which leads to a faster reaction time. Another way
exercise increases reaction time is when the muscles are able to react to stimuli with more accuracy

Flint Water Crisis Who knew that Flints water could be deadly? Everyone should be allowed to have
the same clean water to bathe in, drink, cook with, and to have fun in. Unfortunately, residents in Flint
could not do this for quite some time. These residents were bathing and drinking from this water
before the founding of high lead levels in it. Not only was it because of the high lead levels, but the
pipes were very old as well. Due to actions made by the city council this caused a lot of problems for
the residents in the city of Flint. This effected children, pregnant women, and the elderly the most.
Many lawsuits were filed against the city of Flint. It was so serious to the point that Governor Snyder
had to declare a state of emergency. This took place January 5th of 2016. High levels of lead in the
water and old pipes lead to lawsuits, the sickness of Flint residents, and the city of Flint not doing their
job. Before the water crisis, Flint was receiving water from Detroit s water pipes which gave out very
healthy water. Detroit had enough water to share with other cities. Doing this was not free though and
it was not very cheap. Flint had to pay Detroit in order to use the water. After so long, Detroit s water
system had begun to cost too much for Flint. Flint then switched to another water system. The Flint
city council voted to switch their supply of water from Detroit to the Karegnondi Water

Easter Island Research Paper
Easter Island is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia that is well known for its giant moai statues
jotted all along it. Many scientists come to Easter Island to study how and why the statues were made.
These statues have an average weight of about 20 tons and an average height of 20 feet. Historians are
not sure how the native people of Easter Island, also formally known as Rapa Nui, were able to drag
and place these large statues in their intended locations, but the most commonly accepted theory is
that the people used long pieces of ropes to drag these statues to their places. The Moai statues were
carved from the solid volcanic ash of the volcano Rano Raraku. They were then taken to quarries on
top of the volcanoes, where the people used ropes to hold the statues at a 45° angle so they could be
carved even more in more detail. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then, when the statues were at their resting place, they were lifted up onto a platform called an ahu.
The ahus were also used as the burial place for the person who the statue was built for. Once placed

scoria stone. This was the process by which all of the island s 887 statues were made. It was an
advanced method for people to use in 900 A.D. The Moai statues show the advancing culture of the
Rapa Nui people. The first ones that were made were very short and stout, but the statues made more
recently were very large and slender. The statues tell a lot about the native people s culture, since they
show the religion of the people and their way of demonstrating their social

The Relief and Intaglio Printmaking Process
Describe the Relief Printmaking process. List an artist who uses the form of printmaking. Refer to this
video for more information.
The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of material,
such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of a design.
Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared generously all
over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and they will have
the finished artwork. Using a block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief Printmaking, or Woodcuts .
There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is used so an artist can engrave an
image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the second step of the process could be left
to remain as the art itself. In the video showing the process as Lyell Castonguay created his piece,
Hydra , I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked more bold and real than the actually piece.
But this may only be for the reason that the finished product lacked color in comparison. Of course,
Lyell isn t the only artist who uses this printmaking process. Another artist who uses Relief
Printmaking is Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai used the same process to create his color woodcut piece
called South Wind, Clear Sky , a portrayal of Mount Fuji. Describe the Intaglio Printmaking process.

Explanation Of The Bayeux Tapestry
The Bayeux Tapestry The Bayeux Tapestry (1070 80, Fig. 1) is, in fact, not a tapestry at all. It is a
piece of linen cloth embroidered with wool thread, that measures about 200 feet in length and three
feet in width. The cloth is embroidered with images, ranging from battle scenes (Fig. 2) to banquets
(Fig. 3) to Halley s Comet (Fig. 4). The colors are muted, including dark blue, yellow, rust red, grey,
and green. The proportions are unnatural and there seems to be no care given to liner perspective or
scale; instead, the work seems to focus on developing a cohesive narrative. The figures are flat and
expressionless, yet they have a sense of movement and purpose as they move from one scene to
another. The figures have a believable space, which is especially vivid in the battle scenes, as the
figures appear to fall over one another in a animated struggle. The transition from one scene to the
other is fluid and the story line is easy enough to follow. The tapestry is divided into three sections, the
top, middle and bottom. Each section appears to have its own independent, though complementary,
narrative. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Blue Ocean Strategy At France s Insead Business School
Life is full of games, in which we always want to be the winner. Most of the time, to accomplish this,
we are ready to do whatever it takes to win without thinking how it effects others around us and this
leads the game to get bloody and the players to be merciless. The same pattern of struggle for winning
and the sense of game is relevant in the business world. In their book Blue Ocean Strategy, W. Chan
Kim and Renée Mauborgne strategy professors at France s INSEAD business school, proved that in
this sphere, games don t always have to be this bloody by conveying a world where companies profit
and grow in a competition free environment. Reading and discovering more than 150 business
researches, Kim and Mauborgne help us to discover the idea of this sphere, so called blue ocean,
which became an essential in strategic business thinking. In this review, we are going to summarize
and analyze the strategies which Kim and Mauborgne conveys.
Blue Ocean Strategy advocates that for a company to be successful, creating and opening a new
market space that no one has entered before is essential. In order to gain and to sustain the value
innovation, every single corporate and business owner should create and discover contentious areas of
the market that is ready to grow. This market place is called the blue ocean , a term that should be, but
still is not, a keystone for the managers. The book accepts the fact that this strategy is not seen

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has decided to construct a new school at the beginning of the
year 2016. This is due as the island is ranked sixty fourth (64th) in the Global Education Index (United

the Education Ministry of Trinidad and Tobago. As a result, they have authorized a formal report to
determine potential sites that the school can be built on in which official bodies will investigate
further. To accomplish this goal, applications of Geographic Information Systems were utilized to
assess land suitability in Trinidad with several criteria provided by the Government along with
relevant data sources. Several areas throughout the western coast of Trinidad with potential/ideal sites

Sexual Assault And Rape During The Civil War
Not only is sexual assault an ongoing issue in society, but there has also been a huge up rise of sexual
assaults in the United States military. Recently women have been given the approval to fight on the
front line in the Special Forces career field that was once male only career fields. For women, this
may be a huge achievement; there are so many risks and fears involved, I would be curious to see how
things turn out. Sexual assault and rape have been major issues in the military that is constantly looked
at by Congress for improvements.
Presently women are sacrificing their lives serving this country in all branches of the military in the
United States. Women are more involved in combat situations since the war began in Afghanistan and
Iraq. With the increase of women in the military came the increase of sexual violence. In the
beginning, very few reports of sexual violence were reported; over time the number of reported cases
became a huge issue that brought awareness to those that work with the President of the United States.
At that moment, processes were being looked at; changes needed to be made to find ways to give
confidence to victims, to feel safe enough to report the crime of sexual violence. The Department of
Defense is currently working on measures to alleviate the problem. Sex crimes on women in the
military can have intense effects on their mental, physical and emotional well being. Sexual

Australian Sports Law
Australian Sports Law Introduction Australian sports law is grounded in the principles of Natural
Justice to ensure procedural fairness. Nevertheless, the sports tribunals ability to hold hearings and
make determinations without allowing athletes the benefit of legal counsel is troublesome. Clearly, the
process often involves valuable rights which should be asserted and preserved by knowledgeable,
zealous legal counsel at the first opportunity. The single difference between the Waverley and Nagle
cases shows how issues that are vitally important to an individual can turn on a single fact;
consequently, while Waverley and Nagle did not involve sports tribunals, they do show the importance
of paying careful attention to facts, which also applies to sports tribunals. Finally, the inclusion of
women in sports, particularly Golf, is a natural outgrowth of anti discrimination laws and progressive
Australian attitudes create fertile ground for further attempts by women to compete with men. Part A:
The Natural Justice Process in Sports Tribunals Sports disputes fall into two general categories:
external and internal. External sporting disputes are handled in a state Court system and generally
include: contract or tort; intellectual property; trade practices and competition; criminal law; taxation;

It Is Too Little Air Traffic Control
1. The fact that some airplanes collide is evidence that there is too little air traffic control. Evaluate.
This is a false statement because airplane collision can be eliminated through the provision of better
safety control measures. This is a measure of opportunity cost by the Airplane Company whereby
safety is traded off by other factors to reduce cost of air traffic control and substitute it with other
company cost such as charges incurred during air flights. Opportunity cost is the value of the forgone

would be higher incomes for other productive factors which are in complement with the immigrants
but also it will lead to lower income to other factors that create competition with the immigrants.
3. When a group of Russian officials touring American farms asked who told the farmers how much to
produce in order to supply the appropriate amounts of goods, the farmers said that no one told them.
But the Russians were convinced that farmers were concealing something. What would you have told
the Russians?
There is a market trend of supply and demand in an economy and this is measured through the
equilibrium process and the actors that affect supply and demand. The farmers are the market
suppliers and hence they determine their produce by measuring the equilibrium market prices and
quantities. The suppliers are aware that when the prices of commodity increases the demand of the
same commodity decrease and when demand increases supply decreases until the market reaches an
equilibrium point. There are various factors that affect

Rhetorical Analysis Of Once More To The Lake
In the text Once More to the Lake author E.B. White focuses on appealing to fathers or even possibly
parents in general. The text is eloquently written to ultimately reiterate that change is constant and at
some point in life all people will eventually die. His primary goal of this text is to enjoy the moments
in one s life before life is over. A nostalgic tone is used throughout when comparing his childhood
memories to the current memories he is making with his own son. White is effective in illustrating his
purpose by using techniques such as logos, ethos, pathos, and imagery to encourage his audience to be
aware that their own lives are inevitably growing older each day. In order to gain attention and
credibility from the intended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He refers multiple times to fishing terms that the general audience may not be knowledgeable of such
as spinner ( Once para. 1), hellgrammite ( Once para. 5), and bass ( Once para. 5). These terms not
only classify White as a fisherman but also suggest the importance or impact that fishing and the lake
have on his life. By using logos in his writing, he gains credibility with his intended audience.
Although ethos and logos are important modes as well, this text is most effective due to White s
continuous use of pathos. His thesis statement suggests the urge to return to his childhood memories,
...this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a spinner and returned to the
lake where we used to go, for a week s fishing and to re visit old haunts ( Once para. 1).The audience
is also evoked with anticipation to what will happen later. A good example of this is I took along my
son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and who had seen lily pads only from train
windows ( Once para. 2). The audience is left asking how the trip with his son will compare to his
own memories. White goes on to describe in intricate detail his memory of the lake, cabins, and
scenery. He uses visual imagery to allow the audience to place themselves in the setting he has
described. White wants to emphasize the permanence of some things, or at least the memory of some
things, despite the continual change that happens in the world

Introduction Of Rail And Wallangarra
Introduction: Rail and Wallangarra
The earliest presence of rail travel in Australia began in 1854, first developed within states to link
major settlements with various resources. The idea of intercolonial transportation began circa 1855: a
network of railways systems crossing the country and connecting major settlements. Railways slowly
expanded as settlements developed further inland, with rail essential in bringing farm and mining
produce to capital cities and ports. Wallangarra, a town situated on the New South Wales border,
200km south west of Brisbane, was one of the first Queensland settlements to establish intercolonial
rail transportation in 1887, and it may have been one of the busiest. Its efforts in connecting two
colonies New South Wales and Queensland post federation held significance in the town s progress
into the 20th century.
Now a heritage listed building and site, the Wallangarra Railway Station has seen an array of change
and excitement in its 100 Years. An inquiry into just how important the station was during colonial
trade and transportation as well as the town s development as a result of its presence was undertaken
through a local site study of the Railway s building and surrounding area. The findings of this inquiry
will be discussed in the following discourse.
1. Colonial and Intercolonial Trade and the Beginning of Wallangarra
In order to understand the purpose and need for the Wallangarra Railway Station [and subsequent

  • 2. The Birthmark Literary Analysis In The Birthmark , a short story by Nathanial Hawthorne, the use of the archetypal conflict Nature vs. Science, the character of Damsel in Distress, and the symbol of the Incurable Wound show how easily beauty is overlooked in the endeavor for perfection. The archetypal conflict of Nature vs. Science is shown in Aylmer s intention to remove the birthmark, nature s constant reminder of human mortality, from Georgiana s cheek. Aylmer believed that the birthmark might heighten Georgiana s beauty if it wasn t her only visible imperfection, but on Georgiana s otherwise flawless complexion the birthmark was nothing more than the fatal flaw of humanity...the ineludible gripe in which mortality clutches the highest and purest of earthly mould, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Georgiana had always lived with the birthmark, and was quite fond of its charm. Many people in the town believe it was a fairy s handprint left to sway all hearts; to them the mark only magnified her appeal. The mark s charm had rarely been questioned by anyone other than the jealous women of the town, and its peculiar nature had once intrigued Aylmer and amplified his attraction to Georgiana. He begged for her hand in marriage, but soon after they were wed, he queried whether Georgiana had ever considered having the birthmark removed. She was hurt by the implication that the mark depreciated her and grew upset with her husband. As time passed, Aylmer continued to stare at the mark, unable to keep his eyes from wandering to it. This continued until Georgiana was no longer able to ignore the way his eyes were always fixated on this sole imperfection, the crimson hand that kept him up at night and plagued his dreams. She asked Aylmer to remove the mark, or take her life because she no longer wanted to live if she had to live with the mark. She preferred death to the harsh scrutiny from her husband. The symbolic meaning of the Incurable Wound is used to show the psychological impact of Georgiana s insecurity about the birthmark because of Aylmer s lack of acceptance of her natural beauty. Research has primarily focused on the consequences of exposure to beauty advertising ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Justice Is Thrasymachus The Stronger At the beginning of the debate on what justice is; Thrasymachus shoves himself into the dialogue to say that justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger (Plato 14 [I]). In the state, a ruler is considered the stronger, therefore what is advantageous to them is just. The laws made to be beneficial to the ruler are just, so it is just for their subjects to follow these rules and if they disobey it is considered unjust. This can be said since we can assume that the ruler is the strongest in any situation. When asked if rulers can make mistakes, Thrasymachus agrees. In relation to the last statement, if a ruler was to create a law in error, hence the law is disadvantageous to the ruler, and the subjects followed this law, justice is served on one part. However, since the law is disadvantageous to the ruler, it would be unjust. The other interlocutors interpret Thrasymachus statement to mean that what is just is what the ruler believes to be advantageous to themselves since it was agreed upon that the ruler of the state is the stronger. It can sometimes manifest itself through a transformation that allows readers to understand these types of complex conflicts in a more physical sense. In Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis and Robert Louis Stevenson s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there is a theme of undergoing a physical transformation that affects the two main characters of each story in drastically negative ways. The Metamorphosis explores a series of physical, emotional, and psychological transformations that impact the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, as well as his family and how they treat him. Unlike other stories that depict the archetypal journey of the transformation, Gregor s change occurs in the very beginning of the story as he wakes up one morning from unsettling dreams [and finds] himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin (Kafka 1). The great man theory is basically assuming that, only an individual that was born with greatness is indeed great. The focus on great leaders were limited to only men, as women were not seen as leaders in any way. Leaders are born and not made (leadership theories). From this statement, Thomas Carlyle is making it clear that a person cannot be made a great leader by any extrinsic means, but it must be intrinsic traits of leadership that this person was born with, that can enable him to become a great leader. Great leaders will arise when there is a great need (leadership theories). By this, Carlyle meant that you may see a great leader every day without even knowing that this person is a great leader, but as soon as the need arises for a great leader you will then recognize the individual that was gifted to be the great leader in completing that specific task. I will also be reviewing the various forms of feminist theories, which began as reactions to the lack of reasonable theorizing about why females commit crime and why the tend to be treated far more contradictorily by the criminal justice system. Here, I will explain these various theories with more attention on how they thoroughly transformed the way that the crime and law were viewed. Both theories had become popular in the 1960 s and the 1970 s due to the society looking for theories that fixed the blame for criminal offending on government authorities. These theories also both share a common theme, by accentuating the use of the criminal justice system to target or label certain types of groups such as lower class, minorities, and women, as criminals while protecting the ones with power such as white males. These five topics were essentially very new ideas at the time and were regarded as the cutting edge in design (Von Moos 70). Corbusier used all of these elements in his Villa Savoye located in Paris, France, which was designed in the purist fashion. In order to incorporate the idea of purity into the structure, the building is painted completely white, exaggerating the smooth flow of the planar walls and ceilings. Corbusier s intent was for the building to stay clean and completely white, devoid of stains to resemble purity of spirit (Palermo, 23 Feb 1999). While he sticks to this idea, the function and practicality of the building is lost because of all the extra work that has to go into the building to keep it pristinely white. Apart from Villa Savoye, there are other buildings in which Corbusier sacrificed function for aesthetics. In the Salvation Army building in Paris he attempted to design a building with it s own form of heat control system by using different layers and thickness of glass to regulate air currents. Instead of keeping a constant 18 degree temperature on the interior, the buildings glass panels worked like a greenhouse and kept hot air inside making the interior practically uninhabitable (Leatherbarrow and Mostafavi 30). However, towards the end of the battle, William set a trap to draw Harold from his strong position and he fell for it. Once they were on even ground, Harold s exhausted troops could not counter the attacks from William s well trained and nourished army. The biggest mistake Harold made was entering the Battle of Hastings too early. Harold lost some of his best fighters at the Battle of Stamford Bridge earlier that day and the rest of his army were tired out from their previous battle. When they finally arrived in the South, he was overconfident that he could win this battle because of his recent victories. Because of his misjudgement, he decided to rush into battle with exhausted and unprepared troops. Towards the end of the battle, he fell for the trap that William had set, seeing as he was tired and his troops couldn t wait to finish them off and get a good rest. Both poems relate to the poet s past, and are certainly associated with a specific loss of a loved one one a literal loss, and the other a subconscious loss. Mid Term Break , which I found to be a very touching and poignant poem, describes the loss of the poet s younger brother, Christopher when Heaney was a child, hence the poem is of a childhood tragedy as well as a loss. • 34. Improving Reaction Time Reaction time is how much time it takes to react or respond to a stimulant. It is taken by the elapsed time between the beginning of the application of the stimulant and the beginning of an organism s reaction it. Atoms carry the charge of electricity and when the nerve impulse starts, it flows through the channels in the membrane. This changes the charge to positive from the resting stage to its negative charge. It then carries a nerve impulse through the cell axon into the synapse, causing neurotransmitters to be released into the synaptic cleft. Reaction time is genetically passed down, which demonstrates how improving reaction time could be difficult since it can only be improved by 10 20 percent with exercise or practice. One way to help increase reaction time would be having caffeine in your body because it stimulates adrenaline to be produced and increase improvement of percentage. Neurons are particular cells that transmit signals to the brain and are an important building block of the central nervous system. Neurons have action potential which is caused by ion channels that shut when the membrane potential close the resting potential. It then begins depolarization, which allows sodium ions to produce more membrane potential, allowing more channels to open. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everyone should be allowed to have the same clean water to bathe in, drink, cook with, and to have fun in. Unfortunately, residents in Flint could not do this for quite some time. These residents were bathing and drinking from this water before the founding of high lead levels in it. Not only was it because of the high lead levels, but the pipes were very old as well. Due to actions made by the city council this caused a lot of problems for the residents in the city of Flint. This effected children, pregnant women, and the elderly the most. Many lawsuits were filed against the city of Flint. It was so serious to the point that Governor Snyder had to declare a state of emergency. This took place January 5th of 2016. High levels of lead in the water and old pipes lead to lawsuits, the sickness of Flint residents, and the city of Flint not doing their job. Before the water crisis, Flint was receiving water from Detroit s water pipes which gave out very healthy water. Detroit had enough water to share with other cities. Doing this was not free though and it was not very cheap. Flint had to pay Detroit in order to use the water. After so long, Detroit s water system had begun to cost too much for Flint. Many scientists come to Easter Island to study how and why the statues were made. These statues have an average weight of about 20 tons and an average height of 20 feet. Historians are not sure how the native people of Easter Island, also formally known as Rapa Nui, were able to drag and place these large statues in their intended locations, but the most commonly accepted theory is that the people used long pieces of ropes to drag these statues to their places. The Moai statues were carved from the solid volcanic ash of the volcano Rano Raraku. • 37. The Relief and Intaglio Printmaking Process Describe the Relief Printmaking process. List an artist who uses the form of printmaking. Refer to this video for more information. The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of material, such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of a design. Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared generously all over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and they will have the finished artwork. Using a block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief Printmaking, or Woodcuts . There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is used so an artist can engrave an image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the second step of the process could be left to remain as the art itself. In the video showing the process as Lyell Castonguay created his piece, Hydra , I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked more bold and real than the actually piece. But this may only be for the reason that the finished product lacked color in comparison. Of course, Lyell isn t the only artist who uses this printmaking process. It is a piece of linen cloth embroidered with wool thread, that measures about 200 feet in length and three feet in width. The cloth is embroidered with images, ranging from battle scenes (Fig. 2) to banquets (Fig. 3) to Halley s Comet (Fig. 4). The colors are muted, including dark blue, yellow, rust red, grey, and green. The proportions are unnatural and there seems to be no care given to liner perspective or scale; instead, the work seems to focus on developing a cohesive narrative. The figures are flat and expressionless, yet they have a sense of movement and purpose as they move from one scene to another. The figures have a believable space, which is especially vivid in the battle scenes, as the figures appear to fall over one another in a animated struggle. Nevertheless, the sports tribunals ability to hold hearings and make determinations without allowing athletes the benefit of legal counsel is troublesome. Clearly, the process often involves valuable rights which should be asserted and preserved by knowledgeable, zealous legal counsel at the first opportunity. The single difference between the Waverley and Nagle cases shows how issues that are vitally important to an individual can turn on a single fact; consequently, while Waverley and Nagle did not involve sports tribunals, they do show the importance of paying careful attention to facts, which also applies to sports tribunals. • 46. Introduction Of Rail And Wallangarra Introduction: Rail and Wallangarra The earliest presence of rail travel in Australia began in 1854, first developed within states to link major settlements with various resources. The idea of intercolonial transportation began circa 1855: a network of railways systems crossing the country and connecting major settlements. Railways slowly expanded as settlements developed further inland, with rail essential in bringing farm and mining produce to capital cities and ports. Wallangarra, a town situated on the New South Wales border, 200km south west of Brisbane, was one of the first Queensland settlements to establish intercolonial rail transportation in 1887, and it may have been one of the busiest. Its efforts in connecting two colonies New South Wales and Queensland post federation held significance in the town s progress into the 20th century. Now a heritage listed building and site, the Wallangarra Railway Station has seen an array of change and excitement in its 100 Years. An inquiry into just how important the station was during colonial trade and transportation as well as the town s development as a result of its presence was undertaken through a local site study of the Railway s building and surrounding area.
