The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism
Essay No.1 Weber has been considered as an expert on origination of capitalism. His most famous
work is The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Weber thesis regarding capitalism is rather
considered as an argument counter to Marxist thesis (which was regarding primacy of base over
superstructure). Weber discussed in his book that capitalism was resulted by Protestantism which was
a religious movement or more specifically speaking Calvinism. However any Calvinist who has gone
through catechism would have known that seeking a sign of selection by God in economic success, is
not a right thing to do; therefore it is a travesty to Weber s thesis (Kilcullen, 1996). One expects Weber
to Capitalism is a result of Protestantism or to be more specific, Calvinism. Calvinism believes God
has granted few with salvation whereas others have to go through damnation. This virtue isn t
dependent on their good or bad actions/ deeds but because God wanted it in a certain way. This belief
made believers of Calvinism worried about their salvation and made them invest more efforts into
economic success. This, in turn, made them believe that they were the chosen favourites of God.
Furthermore, the profits made by Calvanists were re invested into the business for further profits
rather than self indulgence. Hence, the concept of Protestant ethic came into place which generally
refers to desire of having enormous economic success and will of working hard. This concept of work

Greed In Pretty Little Liars And Gossip Girl
The sin of greed encompasses the desire for more power and attention than ordinary as one s selfish
lust drives their greed. The hunger of greed is not easily satisfied as portrayed in the novel, The Lord
of the Flies , and the television series, Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl . In William Golding s, Lord
of the Flies , Jack is the novels antagonist, who was a thrust for power. His lust for power and
complete control consumed him, making him the representation of salvage and inhumane. Even after
he became leader, it was not enough for Jack. He realized that to control the group and maintain he
rule, he must enforce fear. With the fear he created, he controlled the boys; thus, power and control
were his greed. In the television series, Pretty Little Liars , Charlotte DiLaurentis, more commonly

She restarted returned to continue her game more intensely to gain her sisters attention. Her need for
attention was fueled by greed and resulted in her sins. In another television services, Gossip Girl , Dan
Humphrey, is illustrated as a loner and misfit among the elite crowd of the Upper East Side. Dan
wanted to be a part of the crowd. Even though he was not born into popularity, he thought he could
write himself into it. Dan became Gossip Girl in the greed to catch attention and popularity. He
created a website that gossiped personal information about the members in the elite crowd and
included himself in it. He did not stop even though those teenagers became one of his closest friends.
His greed for more attention led to his deadly sins of betraying his friends

Four Signs Of Groupthink
Groupthink is a theory of social interaction involved with methods of group decision making,
originally developed by Irving Janis, a social psychologist, in 1972 (Communication Theory).
Groupthink was initially described by Janis as the thought processes of people engaged in group
decision making with a deep desire to conform to in group members ーrequiring extreme loyalty to
group values and the exclusion of those deemed part of an out group . In situations when groupthink
occurs, the need for members of the group discussion to conform their ideas to those of the group
overpowers the individual s need to evaluate group choices critically, whether or not one fully agrees
or supports an alternative answer (Psychology Today). There inlies danger ... Show more content on

The first of these signs of groupthink named Out , due to the nature of the phenomenon, arises when
people disagree with majority consensus receive accusations of doing so purposefully, resulting in
conflict from the argumentative nature of the situation (Janis). This ties into the Direct Pressure on
Dissenters trait, which details how group members will threaten/ put pressure on those expressing
opposition to majority opinion to persuade them not to contradict the expectations of the group. This
then leads into the next phenomenon of groupthink called Self Censorship . Self Censorship, produced
by pressures to conform, explains that, when a member believes they are the only person who has a
certain belief, they self censor for fear of being outcast from the group. Instead of speaking out, they
keep their thoughts hidden from othersーnot wanting to be a dissenter or seen as disagreeable.
Because of Self Censorship, the next symptom of groupthink, Illusions of Unanimity , emerges.
Illusions of Unanimity describes when a member silences their own voice, so the group infers that the
person agrees, even if this is

What Are The Consequences Of Distracted Driving
1) Discuss the consequences related to distracted walking (10 marks) They walk in front of cars and
into street signs, falling off curbs and walking into tree limbs. They are distracted pedestrians who,
while texting, talking on the phone, listening to music or even reading, have sustained serious injuries,
some of which fatal. A 2007 11 study conducted by the NSW transport, found that over 1 in 7 people
killed on the road are pedestrians, with distractions as a contributing factor to deaths for the
overwhelming majority. However these alarming statistics indicate that this is not only happening in
Australia. Similar statistics found in the U.S caused New York State to lower speed limits in its busy

Vera Wang Advertising Analysis
Vera Wang is one of the most iconic designers in fashion today and this ad takes advantage of her
recognition. This image, most likely from a fashion magazine, promotes Vera Wang s dress line. The
advertisement uses three significant contrasts to draw the buyer in. First, the model in the actual dress
line. Second, the flourishing background the models are put in. It makes you think about what the
photographer was trying to portray. Lastly, the display case made the models are standing in and
around. The model in the front draws in the buyer, but the case is see through, allowing the viewer to
see the model standing on the back side and part of the models arm to the left. The image suggests that
someone who wears Vera Wang can have multiple styles and still feel good in whatever type of style
that is.
The greenery background gives the ad an interesting contrast. This is a nature setting, as implied by
the grass and plants. Most of this background is not very visible, as the models take up most of the
advertisement. The brightness of the plants suggest this photo was taken midday when the sun was at
its peak. It was taken with a shallow depth of field, meaning the background is blurred and the main
focus is on the objects in the front of the photo, The greenery is not very green, but fades into the
background. There are no animals in the trees in the back, maybe suggesting this was taken in a place
without a lot of wildlife, or the fact that there s no resources for these

Examples Of Conformity In The Giver
We all know what it feels like, to go to a new school and the excitement that follows. Then you go in
the building and suddenly the mood changes, everyone is staring at you. The excitement is only
distant memories and it makes you uncomfortable and you might even hate the school on first sight. If
conformity is put into place, then everyone will be happier and safer. I think conformity helps our
society by creating a more harmonized, safer, and a more balanced community.
Conformity is better than individualism as in the communities are safer. The novel The Giver by Lois
Lowry tells us about their conformitized community. Jonas, on page 63, says to the reader that the
community is extremely protective of every one in the community and that

The Marketing Model Canvas As An Analytical Framework
Critique
Our group has used the Business Model Canvas as an analytical framework to evaluate The Fun
Center and generate recommendations to further improve the delivery of its value proposition. The
Fun Center aims to provide children with an exciting and safe place to have fun by providing an array
of arcade games, food and beverages, and event hosting. We made no changes to the general premise
of the Business Plan, but rather we fine tuned the aspects we felt lacked clarity. The gaps that we
originally identified in the first version of the Business Plan were minor and posed little threat to the
company s overall success. However, we felt that The Fun Center s lack of distinctiveness would limit
the company in terms of potential growth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recommendation 1: Market to Children and Parents
Our analysis of the Business Model Canvas has revealed a minor hole in the channels section. We feel
as though the company s business plan failed to account for a very significant customer segment: kids.
Currently, marketing is directed towards arcade enthusiasts and middle to upper class adults. The hope
is that parents will be intrigued by the company s value and bring their children to the arcade.
However, considering that the value proposition seeks to serve children ages 5 12 as a target customer
segment, the Business Model Canvas would suggest that a channel should exist to directly connect
The Fun Center s value to children. In addition to advertising to adults with traditional methods, we
recommend that The Fun Center also market directly to children in order to improve reputation and
garner more interest. For example, advertising The Fun Center on children s shows and radio stations
will communicate to children in ways that are already familiar and comfortable to them. According to
small business advice from Hearst newspapers, it would cost 200 to 1,500 dollar to commercially
advertise The Fun Center on a local station, a small investment for a large long term benefit (Wagner,
2015). In in the same way they react to new toys and cereal, they will ask their parents to bring them

A Research Study On Restless Legs Syndrome
1. Describe the phenotype that is being studied in this analysis and the specific prior evidence that
suggests that any further work will reveal a genetic factor. Restless legs syndrome is a condition
characterized by four general criteria. i. Impulsiveness to move limbs regardless or paresthesia ii.
Subjects experience worsening symptoms at rest iii. Partial relief of symptoms associated with
movement iv. Symptoms tend to worsen in the evening Although the exact cause is unknown, this
study illustrates a positive correlation derived from pathology studies of reduced intracellular iron
stores and familial history upwards of 65% denoting possible inheritance of genetic attributes.
Previous studies show that RLS symptoms may improve with dopaminergic medication suggesting a
possible mechanism pertaining to the dopaminergic system. 2. Why did this study examine ONLY

Baylor College of Medicine ran this study to examine multiplex RLS presence in 15 separate families.
Since the goal is to examine heritable factors, this study required willing and related participants,
which happened to be 453 subjects accessioned at the Movement Disorders Clinic by Baylor in Texas.

Women s Fight For Combat Roles
Joan of Arc: A women in Combat
A great leader knows how and what to do in any given situation. Great leaders know how to adapt, and
find a way to conquer a specific task or obstacle. There has been an ongoing debate about whether
women should have access to combat roles. Many argue that women are not physically build to match
the strength of a man. A young lady by the name of Joan of Arc or commonly known as The Maid of
Orleans was a young leader of the 15th century who changed the course of the hundred years war.
Joan became an unlikely heroine leader who led a revolt against the British which ultimately ended in
a victory. Joan embodies the definition of what a women in the military should be. She debunks the
21st century modern critics that say women do not fit the standards to survive and thrive in combat
roles. The objective of this paper is to identify key arguments that are in favor of women fighting in
combat. Gender equality among women has been a longstanding battle. Many are for gender neutral
roles in the military, and many are against it. The people that are against it believe that women will
endanger their units . While the Army and the Navy believes that it will enlarge the talent pool, and
that opening combat roles to women will enhance the readiness of the military.
In our view, the best qualified solider, regardless of gender, should be allowed to serve in any position,
according to a joint statement to the committee by acting Army Secretary

Now she has an additional item. The plan worked! People buy in bulk when they believe it is a good

But there are some things that are good to buy that way, such as toilet paper and toothpaste. Pasta is
good, as well, to buy in bulk. Spices are not good to buy in bulk because they may lose their flavor.
Produce should mainly be bought as needed. The customer is now in the checkout line. This is usually
when customers look at their carts and realize how much they really have. The checkouts really have
no room to dump the unnecessary stuff customers have picked up along the way. So they keep it. But
there is candy and magazines to pick up and throw in your cart. The kids all want candy and there is a

spend more money. Grab the handheld basket instead of a shopping cart. Only get what will fit in it.
To avoid impulse buying, eat before grocery shopping. It is never good to take children or spouses

Vocal Training Research Paper
Improve Your Singing Voice With Vocal Training
By Skyler Jett
Oct 17, 2009
Every human being is born with a gift, a talent that comes in various forms. It could be the gift of the
written word. It could be the gift of leadership. It could be the gift of the performing arts. Whatever
your gift is, that talent is nothing if it is not perfected. A gift is fully appreciated only if it is utilized.
Let us focus on the gift of music, particularly the vocals. We often conclude that they, the vocalists,
are born to sing. We are mistaken. Singers need vocal training to reach that level of greatness, that
moment when their very voices touch its audience in the most dramatic way.
For example, we have all seen the arduous auditions for American Idol. The majority of these hopefuls
are talented. Sure they can carry a tune. But, this writer believes that the judges do only seek the

It is a serious business for those who really want to become one, more so... for those that singing is
their bread and butter. There s no way they can let a moment pass without doing anything to improve
the talent that they have. You can opt to use synthesizers alright, to make your sound good. But this
won t definitely take you to where you want really to be.. and that s the singing stardom.
Discipline is the very best thing you can get from taking vocal training. Through vocal training, you
will be able to learn that music can give you the sense of fulfillment. The more efforts you put forth
into improving your singing, the more you ll get to appreciate your talent in singing. Cigarettes and
alcohol? These are just some of the temptation that can surely do harm to your singing voice. If yo are
a disciplined artist you ll be able to keep away from these temptations. Keep in mind, your voice is
your asset, and you must really take good care of that

The Metamorphosis Theme
The Metamorphosis by Kafka presents readers with an intensely claustrophobic and absurd premise
featuring a protagonist that is so used to living like an insect and so consumed with guilt that these
elements of his life finally take over and lead to his demise. In this world Kafka creates, Gregor lives
like an insect even before his metamorphosis and this theme is developed at the beginning of the story
when he wakes up to find that he has become what he most resembled in his life.
The idea of guilt and scurrying about to please others figures prominently in this text and it is useful to
look at the ways in which a compounding sense of guilt leads to Gregor s final resignation to death in
Kafka s short story, The Metamorphosis. For a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His fate, it seems, is to provide for his family and there are several instances in which he laments his
inability to provide for his mother, father, and dear sister. The narrator states, revealing one of these
themes in The Metamorphosis , Gregor s sole desire was to do his utmost to help the family to forget
as soon as possible the catastrophe which had overwhelmed the business and thrown them all into a
state of complete despair (95) and this sense of blind duty compels him to work a meaningless, menial
job that has both figuratively and literally turned him into a filthy, scuttling, and helpless insect. While
this is true on a more basic level, the root of Gregor s problem stems from a deep seated feeling of
guilt, an emotion that eventually leads to his demise. By the end of the story, Gregor has completely
lost his purpose and for a man that once existed simply as a utilitarian creature (again, like an insect
since he lives only to fulfill his duty to the group). At one point, his feelings of uselessness are
described as, Gregor was now cut off from his mother, who was perhaps nearly dying because of him;
he dared not open the door for fear of frightening his sister, who had to stay with her mother, there was
nothing he could do but wait; and harassed by self reproach and worry he began to crawl to and fro
(109) and it is clear that the guilt of being useless is mounting and leading to his resignation in the

Genetic Testing Persuasive Essay
What would you do if an immediate family member of yours developed a popular genetic disease and
there was a possibility of you having it? Wouldn t you want to know whether or not you had it as well,
in your genes? Genetic testing allows for people to know if they have a certain genetic disease, if they
need to get a certain treatment plan set up, or if there are ways to prevent it from becoming present or
visible in the body. Genetic Discrimination is no longer legally allowed, meaning that there is no
longer a need to fear the possibility of your genetic information getting into the wrong hands. Genetic

is now protected by the law. Genetic Discrimination is no longer allowed because both federal and
state laws have been made against allowing employers and insurance agents to discriminate you based
on a genetic disease you may have. These laws are part of the GINA Genetic Information
Nondiscrimination Act. There are two titles within GINA, Title One prohibits Genetic Discrimination
in Health Insurance and Title Two prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Employment. Others may argue
that genetic testing is unreliable and does not work to detect genetic diseases in all parts of the body.
Among the variety of genetic tests, some yield high rates of false positive and false negative results,
while others are characterized by findings that are precise but of uncertain clinical or predictive value
(1998, Hastings Center Report, 15 21). Although that may be true, there can be tests done in other

Hello Marvis Bellagwa,
I enjoyed reading your great post. The prostate specific antigen (PSA) analysis is indeed the utmost
essential test in men s health utilized to screen substantial populaces for prostate cancer, which have
shown to decrease the number of men with advanced prostate cancer. According to Moyer (2012), the

Professional Identity Is The Persona Assumed By One Who
Professional identity is the persona assumed by one who holds expertise or specialised knowledge

professional identity is to provide quality care for patients and to ensure a safe environment for others.
For the nursing profession, there are a set of guidelines, codes of conduct and codes of ethics nurses
need to follow to ensure the best care is given and provided for others. There are three main agencies

Abu Na Im Al-Asfahanis Beauty Of The Righteous
One of the most challenging problems I encountered this semester was reconciling the inconsistency
within the Sufi textual tradition between the hagiographies of the early Sufi masters, who practiced a
form of renunciation that was characterized by the unfettered relinquishment of all possessions, social
relations, and familial duties, and the instruction manuals of the developing systematization of Sufism,
which no longer required its students and masters to engage in such rigorous renunciation but instead
substituted more moderate and socially acceptable forms of renunciation. On the one hand, Abu Na im

First, conceptually, scholars of Islam should stay away from understanding zuhd as asceticism. While
asceticism as a category may seem unproblematic for scholars of Early Christianity, Islamic Studies
scholars are studying different religious contexts and worldviews that should be analyzed without the
weight and baggage of the English and Christian term asceticism. Many of the concepts associated
with asceticism that were mentioned above do not integrate neatly into the Islamic worldview nor they
embody the practices of zuhd. I contend that thinking of zuhd generally as renunciation instead of
asceticism allows for much greater malleability within the various traditions of Islamic renunciation
that do not conform to the ascetic (Christian) standard. Second, I argue that renunciation as zuhd has
not had one particular meaning or one specific mode of praxis throughout Islamic history and that the
clash of zuhd archetypes has been a hallmark of Sufism since its nascent days in the desert until its
most recent struggles in the modern era. The Islamic renunciant can be both the wandering outcast,
who prays to God in solitude away from society, and the active socialite, who maintains an occupation
and possesses a family. Overall, I hope this essay helps other readers and scholars of Sufism overcome
the same mental roadblock I possessed in regards to asceticism, renunciation, and

Hofstede s Four Cultural Differences
1. Using Hofstede s four cultural dimensions as a point of reference, what are some of the main
cultural differences between the United States and France?
When referencing Hofstede s four cultural dimensions it is apparent that the United States and France
have different perceptions of one another. The United States views the French as arrogant, flamboyant,
hierarchical, and emotional. Whereas, France views the United States as naive, aggressive,
unprincipled, and it s people being workaholics. (Doh and Luthans, 2015)
The first main cultural difference would be power distance. The power distance dimension indicates
the point at which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions accept and expect that
power is distributed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The French would rather have well structured management with rules and regulations in place rather
than take risks that may not have a positive outcome. Whereas, Americans are the complete opposite,
meaning that they are more willing to take risks and are less traditional when it comes to rules and
regulations.
The third cultural difference is masculinity. Masculinity is defined by Hofstede as a trait, which
emphasizes ambition, acquisition of wealth and differentiated gender roles. (Tidwell, n.d) A society
that is focused on money and success is said to be high in masculinity. The United States is an
example of an area that is high in this dimension. For example, when the Disney company decided on
opening a park in France they didn t even take into consideration how the French would react or what
type of impact this could have on the their culture. Being that they have the masculine characteristics
they were more concerned about wanting to prevail on others.
The fourth cultural difference is individualism. According to Hofstede individualism is defined as the
tendency of the people to mainly look after themselves and their immediate family. (ClearlyCultural,
n.d) In the United States and France individualism is pretty high. However, individualism is slightly
higher in the United States being that they are more likely to

Celebrity In Mary Loftus The Other Side Of Fame
When it comes to celebrities, society is under the impression that celebrities live this ideal lifestyle.
The common perception is that because celebrities are very wealthy, they get special treatment, and

disadvantages of their lifestyle. In author Mary Loftus, The Other Side of Fame, some of the
downsides are the lack of privacy and the chemical dependence celebrities use to help cope with all
the pressure from the fame. If I was a celebrity, the downsides that come with the fame would affect
the mental stability I have as a normal person, and therefore make it difficult for me to manage that
lifestyle. Chemical dependency is one of the downsides that occur in the life of celebrities. Loftus
states, For celebrities, especially in the entertainment field, the pressure is always on to turn in a
perfect performance, to be better than before, to constantly hit the mark (530). Being pressured into
performing at extreme levels that celebrities cannot handle usually leads to the abuse of drugs.

They go through the same things normal people go through. They too want to live a normal lifestyle
just like the rest of us. I personally feel like all the publicity tabloids put out to the world drives
celebrities to chemical dependency. If tabloids respected celebrities personal space a little more, the
Hollywood stars probably wouldn t go in the direction of using drugs to get their minds off the
everyday news. I would not be able to be a celebrity because privacy is a must in my life. Everybody
needs time alone to relax and clear his or her mind. The celebrity status is a huge role to take on, so
being a celebrity would drive me crazy. I value my mental stability. Nobody should be pushed into an
unstable state of living. Life is too precious to just throw it

The Crime Control Model And The Due Process Model
Herbert Packer, a Stanford University law professor, developed two models of the criminal justice
system (CJS) in the United States, the crime control model and the due process model. This has now
been implemented and applied to the CJS of England and Wales and there are several examples of due
process and crime control measures which this CJS is made up of.
The due process model relies on the underlying principle that an individual cannot be deprived of
liberty, property, or even life without appropriate legal procedures and safeguards. When people are
charged with a crime they are required to have their rights protected by the CJS. The primary actor of
this model is the defendant as it is largely structured around protecting the rights ... Show more

This is a procedural safeguard of the CJS and is a part of the due process model. Another example of
the due process model in the CJS is the system of being able to appeal. The fact that there is a higher
Court of Appeal if you feel the lower courts have made a mistake and even an even higher House of
Lords for appeals. This is a procedural safeguard for the accused to ensure their guilt is beyond
reasonable doubt and is another feature of the due process model. Another due process feature of the
CJS is the panel of lay people known as the jury which decide upon the guilt. This is a feature of the
due process model as again it protects the rights of the defendant as expected by the due process
model. An example in context of the due process model in the CJS is in relation to the Woolwich
murder of Drummer Lee Rigby. This is my ideal example of the due process model being
implemented in the CJS of England and Wales, this is because although the two men (Micheal
Adebowale and Micheal Adebolajo) were quite visibly caught on tape and actually waited to be
arrested they were still given their right as human beings to undergo the due course and process of the
law as they still had a trial and were still allowed to appeal. There are other features of the due process
model in the CJS of England and Wales such as the right to silence, the right to legal advice and

Computers And The Field Of Computer Engineering
Electrical engineering is a wide field of study and the field of computer engineering is very intriguing.
Computer hardware is the field that is advancing at an exponential pace in the last 100 years which is
a very small piece of human history. Which is why this field is so interesting and finding
advancements in computer and computing is not hard to come by. There s always something new that
s created like a new software or processor. But there s been some recent advancements in what could
shape and be the cornerstone of a new step in making history and a new age of computing. That great
leap towards the future is quantum computing and in the last two years theirs been a lot of new and
exciting developments that will be discussed. The man who first came up with the idea was Feynman
a physicist who encountered a problem with classic computers. That they just couldn t handle the
amount of variable or simulate quantum physics he came up with the first concepts of a quantum
computer. Quantum computing has a made a recent leap forward that can be attributed to a few
factors. The factors are that in last few year s major companies like google, Intel and IBM have started
to or have increased their resources and manpower on making quantum computing a reality. In 2014
John Martinis and his colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara were working to make
qubit gates more reliable and controllable. During their research and experimentation, they got a

The Icon Of Grease Will Never Lose Devotion
The Icon of Grease Will Never Lose Devotion For a movie released in 1978 it still holds true to the
drama of high school and the cliche of summer love. Grease became a classic for the same reasons as
American Graffiti, it explored the life of teens and culture during the fifties. The film director Randal
Kleiser cast a previous academy award nominee, John Travolta and rising Australian star Olivia
Newton John and it now is the epitome of their careers. The musical is a romantic comedy that takes
place in the late fifties with a summer fling between greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy. They
parted with the conclusion of summer, but when school resumes, they find themselves attending the
same high school. It follows Danny and Sandy as well as the perspective friend groups the t birds and
pink ladies. Grease is a musical that is both iconic and forever relatable with it s lively music, dancing,
humor and simple story lines. Some would consider the casting in Grease to be a flaw because they
are meant to portray teenagers and all the main actors and actresses were well into their twenties.
Stockard Channing, who played Rizzo was thirty three when they began filming, Olivia Newton John
was twenty eight, and John Travolta was twenty three. They cast doesn t even look like they could be
high school students, but I think it was worth it to be able to include good actors and actresses.
Furthermore, from the feminist perspective the movie is categorized as bad because of the

It would be a mistake, for instance, to treat software as a good simply because it was contained in a
tangible medium that fits within that category. This would conflate the sale of a book with the sale of
its intellectual content, suggesting that the purchaser of the book might be buying a right to general
use of the expressions contained in the volume. A website created under arrangements calling for the
designer to fashion, program, and host its operation on the designer s server is neither tangible nor
moveable in the conventional sense. To be sure, one can copy a website using tangible, movable
objects such as hard drives, cables, and disks. These objects are in themselves just as certainly goods,
but it does not necessarily follow that the information they contain classifies as goods as well. The

Museum Project
The Louvre:
The Louvre is the museum I researched, and Virgin of the Rocks is the painting I decided to choose.
The Louvre Museum is the largest in the world, and is situated in Paris, France. Around 35,000 objects
are exhibited over an area of around 40 square miles. The Louvre is also the second most visited
museum in the world, trailing only the Palace Museum in China. The louvre has more than 9 million
visitors annually. (Louvre, 2016)
The museum opened to the public on August 10, 1793. At this point it only had a little over 500
paintings in its possession. Most of these works were either royal art, or confiscated church property.
During the years of 1796 until 1801, the Louvre was closed due to maintenance and construction.
Eventually, this collection was added to with contributions during the reigns of Louis XVIII and
Charles X. Furthermore, the Second French Empire helped to contribute a further 20,000 pieces to the
Louvre. (Louvre, 2016)
Virgin of the Rocks:
Leonardo s painting The Virgin of the Rocks celebrates the mystery of Incarnation in portrayals of the
Virgin Mary, Christ and Saint John the Baptist. For the first time, these holy figures, bathed in a gentle

Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court as a Dystopian Work
For years, Mark Twain s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court has been primarily viewed as a
work of simple satire. Twain, desiring to poke fun at a group of America s cultural critics, chief among
them Matthew Arnold, who claimed that cultural life in the U.S. treaded on shallow soil, takes aim at
the venerated institutions of Britain. The author attempts to show that his country s lack of
romanticized social structures, meaning an absence of royalty, the Catholic church, and long dead
knights and princesses, was far from a cultural weakness. Twain explodes the myth around idealized
chivalric society and proves it to be no match for the Nineteenth ... Show more content on

Here, as in much of Tom Sawyer and most of Huckleberry Finn, he is a great novelist (DeVoto, 274).
The work devolves from its first chapters, however, and becomes something very different by the end
of the novel. A Connecticut Yankee s climactic, blood letting ending, in particular, stands out as
amateurish bungling by the author. Twain, in a burst of what seems, upon initial investigation, a
beginning writer s attempt to resolve a novel that has spiraled out of his control, kills off his
antagonists and finally his protagonist as well. It seems that Twain throws his hands up in frustration
and ends the action in an orgy of electrocutions and Gatling gun fire. . . . the book is chaos. Twain s
mind was not able to stay within[satire s] limits. His imaginative ferment demanded gigantic
expression, (DeVoto, 278). An alternate reading of the conclusion, however, allows the reader to take a
vastly different critical angle on the book.
When viewed through the lens of anti utopian or dystopian analogy, A Connecticut Yankee in King
Arthur s Court s finale becomes a grave prediction of man s industrialized future. Where Aldous
Huxley augured man s enslavement to technology, its intellectual and critical emasculation in Brave
New World, Twain s work can be construed to encapsulate the pending destruction of society s
innocence and idealism by

Women Hunted By The Lenape Women
The Lenape women did most of the farming and the men hunted. They harvested corn, squash and
beans, hunted for deer, elk, turkeys, small game and caught fish in the rivers. Three of the most
important crops planted by the Lenape included corn, beans, and squash. These crops were known as
The Three Sisters by many of the eastern woodland tribes. The corn was boiled, baked, or fried and
used to make soup, bread, and puddings. The beans were boiled or fried, made into soups, or added
with their meat dishes. The Lenape believed that people were entitled to what they trapped or
gathered, but food was to be shared with others and no one should go hungry. They offered visitors
food, and in turn, they always ate what was given to them.

The Shallow Pond And The Envelope
Paper Topic IV: The Shallow Pond and The Envelope
In this paper I will argue that other people s suffering matters and that as humans, we have a moral
obligation to help others in regards to the envelope and shallow pond cases, however, those we know
or are closer in proximity to, take priority over strangers. I will also address O Neill and Singer s main
expositions and their application on the issue of famine relief.
O Neill formulates her beliefs based on the ideas of Immanuel Kant. Kantianism is founded on the
belief that one must never treat themselves or another person as a mere means. O Neill believes that
the intention to perform an action, rather than the consequences of it, is what determines the moral
worth of one s actions. Additionally, she would argue that Kantianism revolves around actions
reflecting one or more personal maxim, or rule of conduct with which one guides their life. In
conveying the Kantian perspective, O Neill formulates a duty based argument. When applying our
duty of beneficence, she highlights that we have a responsibility to perform acts that refrain from
using people as mere means, as well as to help develop and promote the other person s ends, while
fostering their capacities to pursue their goals. O Neill further continues to mention our duty of justice,
which implies that we have an obligation to give to those in need, but prioritize those that we
personally know or are in close proximity to. Furthermore, this belief supports the idea

Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Essay
The Powerful Wife of Bath
In Geoffrey Chacer s The Canterbury Tales we are introduced to 29
people who are going on a pilgrimage to St. Thomas a Becket in Canterbury.
Each person is represented to fit a unique type of behavior as shown by
people during the medieval ages. My attention was drawn to the Wife of
Bath through which Chaucer notes the gender inequalities. Predominantly,
women could either choose to marry and become a childbearing wife or go
into a religious order. Women were seen as property. Women during this
period of time, had limited choices when it came to societal roles. The
Wife of Bath exonerates the accepted roles of society, reflecting women s

She is confident about her knowledge of love, virginity and marriage (after
all she has been married five times). Just as men use the bible to justify
women s oppression, so did the Wife of Bath. She states that double
standards for women are deeply rooted in society. The Wife of Bath
addressed and dispels the justification for multiple marriages through
biblical figures and stories.
I woot wel Abraham was an holy man,
And Jacob eek, as fer as evere I can,
And eech of hem hadde wives mo than two,
And many another holy man also (p.118, ll. 61 64)
The Wife of Bath relied on the bible to justify her unaccepted views, but
when the bible did not favor her views she simply disregarded it.
The Wife of Bath is a widow and therefore it is assumed that she
would dress rather conservatively. This is not the case for the Wife of
Bath. Her clothing is quite flamboyant with scarlet red leggings, soft new
shoes, broad hat, and spurs on her feet. She is obviously not dressed in a
typical manner or style of other women in her time (Hallissy 42).
She disapproved of her husbands attempts to inflict control upon
her. She

Why The American Diet Is The Key Factor Of Weight Loss
A somber fact that exists in American society is that thousands of Americans search for the unreal
dream of becoming thin. Every day someone is on a new diet, whether it d be your neighbors, friends,
or even your relatives. Dieters acquire many disguises such as the bandwagoner , and the promise
maker . Some Americans want to lose weight quickly and conveniently; therefore, a trendy diet
attracts the bandwagoner. The new, inexpensive fees at the gym might attract the promise maker, who
typically promises to go to the gym an ample amount of times each week. Although several of the
different dieters are successful, the majority of the bandwagoners and promise makers don t succeed.
Even though there are several different ways to lose weight, according to the ACE (American Council
on Exercise), Diet is the main key factor of weight loss .
With the idea of weight loss being significant in American society, companies have taken full
advantage by creating supplements that vow to help with reducing body fat. Hydroxycut, a company
that advertises their dietary supplements, use creative slogans that lure their friends, the bandwagoners
to their hotline. Slogans such as: You ve never looked better in black! jumble with people s emotions
in a positive way, making them more prone to buying these products. Hydroxycut s main focus is the
production of caffeine capsules; these capsules stimulate appetite while giving a boost of energy.
Although the capsules are not approved by

Summary Of The American Embassy
Summary: This book was a very interesting read. The story was written by the former award winning
correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, Mr. Ronald Kessler in 1989. He
gave us an insight on how KGB, one of the world s most effective information gathering organization
penetrated the United States Embassy in Moscow (Moscow Station). A Marine by the name of Sgt
Clayton Lonetree, is known throughout the Marine Security Guard program, because of his conviction
of espionage against the United States. He was used by the KGB to access the most vulnerable parts of
the U.S. Embassy, and help provide a threat to our national security. The Russian spies used the term
which is called the honey pot to the Department of the State. A young lady by the name of ... Show

So Violetta knew she had him where she wanted him. She introduced Lonetree to her Uncle Sasha ,
who was in charge of the KGB at the time. They basically bribed Lonetree into helping them penetrate
the national security of the United States Embassy. He would walk around the Embassy and allowed
the Russian spies to place bugs in the most sensitive areas to gather classified information. Once his
relationship with Violetta went sour, and he realized he got taken advantage of, he turned himself in to
the CIA agents. Corporal Arnold Bracy and a few other Marines was arrested after months of
investigations for being the lookout for Lonetree, as he escorted the KGB throughout the hard lines of
the U.S. American Embassy, Moscow. This story is one of many that had been used as examples to the
new Marine Security Guards today. It gives us insight on how intelligent and smart our enemies are
compared to what we may think. In Marine Security Guard School, the instructors teach us to always
remain vigilant to our surroundings and who we talk to. The Clayton Lonetree Story is a prime
example of this lesson. If you fail to follow rules and regulations there will be serious

  • 2. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism Essay No.1 Weber has been considered as an expert on origination of capitalism. His most famous work is The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Weber thesis regarding capitalism is rather considered as an argument counter to Marxist thesis (which was regarding primacy of base over superstructure). Weber discussed in his book that capitalism was resulted by Protestantism which was a religious movement or more specifically speaking Calvinism. However any Calvinist who has gone through catechism would have known that seeking a sign of selection by God in economic success, is not a right thing to do; therefore it is a travesty to Weber s thesis (Kilcullen, 1996). One expects Weber to Capitalism is a result of Protestantism or to be more specific, Calvinism. Calvinism believes God has granted few with salvation whereas others have to go through damnation. This virtue isn t dependent on their good or bad actions/ deeds but because God wanted it in a certain way. This belief made believers of Calvinism worried about their salvation and made them invest more efforts into economic success. This, in turn, made them believe that they were the chosen favourites of God. Furthermore, the profits made by Calvanists were re invested into the business for further profits rather than self indulgence. Hence, the concept of Protestant ethic came into place which generally refers to desire of having enormous economic success and will of working hard. This concept of work ethic ... • 4. Four Signs Of Groupthink Groupthink is a theory of social interaction involved with methods of group decision making, originally developed by Irving Janis, a social psychologist, in 1972 (Communication Theory). Groupthink was initially described by Janis as the thought processes of people engaged in group decision making with a deep desire to conform to in group members ーrequiring extreme loyalty to group values and the exclusion of those deemed part of an out group . In situations when groupthink occurs, the need for members of the group discussion to conform their ideas to those of the group overpowers the individual s need to evaluate group choices critically, whether or not one fully agrees or supports an alternative answer (Psychology Today). There inlies danger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first of these signs of groupthink named Out , due to the nature of the phenomenon, arises when people disagree with majority consensus receive accusations of doing so purposefully, resulting in conflict from the argumentative nature of the situation (Janis). This ties into the Direct Pressure on Dissenters trait, which details how group members will threaten/ put pressure on those expressing opposition to majority opinion to persuade them not to contradict the expectations of the group. This then leads into the next phenomenon of groupthink called Self Censorship . Self Censorship, produced by pressures to conform, explains that, when a member believes they are the only person who has a certain belief, they self censor for fear of being outcast from the group. Instead of speaking out, they keep their thoughts hidden from othersーnot wanting to be a dissenter or seen as disagreeable. Because of Self Censorship, the next symptom of groupthink, Illusions of Unanimity , emerges. • 7. Vera Wang Advertising Analysis Vera Wang is one of the most iconic designers in fashion today and this ad takes advantage of her recognition. This image, most likely from a fashion magazine, promotes Vera Wang s dress line. The advertisement uses three significant contrasts to draw the buyer in. First, the model in the actual dress line. Second, the flourishing background the models are put in. It makes you think about what the photographer was trying to portray. Lastly, the display case made the models are standing in and around. The model in the front draws in the buyer, but the case is see through, allowing the viewer to see the model standing on the back side and part of the models arm to the left. The image suggests that someone who wears Vera Wang can have multiple styles and still feel good in whatever type of style that is. The greenery background gives the ad an interesting contrast. This is a nature setting, as implied by the grass and plants. Most of this background is not very visible, as the models take up most of the advertisement. The brightness of the plants suggest this photo was taken midday when the sun was at its peak. It was taken with a shallow depth of field, meaning the background is blurred and the main focus is on the objects in the front of the photo, The greenery is not very green, but fades into the background. Then you go in the building and suddenly the mood changes, everyone is staring at you. I think conformity helps our society by creating a more harmonized, safer, and a more balanced community. Conformity is better than individualism as in the communities are safer. • 9. The Marketing Model Canvas As An Analytical Framework Critique Our group has used the Business Model Canvas as an analytical framework to evaluate The Fun Center and generate recommendations to further improve the delivery of its value proposition. The Fun Center aims to provide children with an exciting and safe place to have fun by providing an array of arcade games, food and beverages, and event hosting. We made no changes to the general premise of the Business Plan, but rather we fine tuned the aspects we felt lacked clarity. The gaps that we originally identified in the first version of the Business Plan were minor and posed little threat to the company s overall success. However, we felt that The Fun Center s lack of distinctiveness would limit the company in terms of potential growth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recommendation 1: Market to Children and Parents Our analysis of the Business Model Canvas has revealed a minor hole in the channels section. We feel as though the company s business plan failed to account for a very significant customer segment: kids. Currently, marketing is directed towards arcade enthusiasts and middle to upper class adults. The hope is that parents will be intrigued by the company s value and bring their children to the arcade. However, considering that the value proposition seeks to serve children ages 5 12 as a target customer segment, the Business Model Canvas would suggest that a channel should exist to directly connect The Fun Center s value to children. In addition to advertising to adults with traditional methods, we recommend that The Fun Center also market directly to children in order to improve reputation and garner more interest. For example, advertising The Fun Center on children s shows and radio stations will communicate to children in ways that are already familiar and comfortable to them. According to small business advice from Hearst newspapers, it would cost 200 to 1,500 dollar to commercially advertise The Fun Center on a local station, a small investment for a large long term benefit (Wagner, 2015). Restless legs syndrome is a condition characterized by four general criteria. i. Impulsiveness to move limbs regardless or paresthesia ii. Subjects experience worsening symptoms at rest iii. Partial relief of symptoms associated with movement iv. Symptoms tend to worsen in the evening Although the exact cause is unknown, this study illustrates a positive correlation derived from pathology studies of reduced intracellular iron stores and familial history upwards of 65% denoting possible inheritance of genetic attributes. Previous studies show that RLS symptoms may improve with dopaminergic medication suggesting a possible mechanism pertaining to the dopaminergic system. 2. Why did this study examine ONLY people from North America in conducting this specific linkage analysis? Why not other populations? Baylor College of Medicine ran this study to examine multiplex RLS presence in 15 separate families. Since the goal is to examine heritable factors, this study required willing and related participants, which happened to be 453 subjects accessioned at the Movement Disorders Clinic by Baylor in Texas. The Metamorphosis Theme The Metamorphosis by Kafka presents readers with an intensely claustrophobic and absurd premise featuring a protagonist that is so used to living like an insect and so consumed with guilt that these elements of his life finally take over and lead to his demise. In this world Kafka creates, Gregor lives like an insect even before his metamorphosis and this theme is developed at the beginning of the story when he wakes up to find that he has become what he most resembled in his life. The idea of guilt and scurrying about to please others figures prominently in this text and it is useful to look at the ways in which a compounding sense of guilt leads to Gregor s final resignation to death in Kafka s short story, The Metamorphosis. His fate, it seems, is to provide for his family and there are several instances in which he laments his inability to provide for his mother, father, and dear sister. The narrator states, revealing one of these themes in The Metamorphosis , Gregor s sole desire was to do his utmost to help the family to forget as soon as possible the catastrophe which had overwhelmed the business and thrown them all into a state of complete despair (95) and this sense of blind duty compels him to work a meaningless, menial job that has both figuratively and literally turned him into a filthy, scuttling, and helpless insect. While this is true on a more basic level, the root of Gregor s problem stems from a deep seated feeling of guilt, an emotion that eventually leads to his demise. By the end of the story, Gregor has completely lost his purpose and for a man that once existed simply as a utilitarian creature (again, like an insect since he lives only to fulfill his duty to the group). At one point, his feelings of uselessness are described as, Gregor was now cut off from his mother, who was perhaps nearly dying because of him; he dared not open the door for fear of frightening his sister, who had to stay with her mother, there was nothing he could do but wait; and harassed by self reproach and worry he began to crawl to and fro (109) and it is clear that the guilt of being useless is mounting and leading to his resignation in the face of ... Abu Na Im Al-Asfahanis Beauty Of The Righteous One of the most challenging problems I encountered this semester was reconciling the inconsistency within the Sufi textual tradition between the hagiographies of the early Sufi masters, who practiced a form of renunciation that was characterized by the unfettered relinquishment of all possessions, social relations, and familial duties, and the instruction manuals of the developing systematization of Sufism, which no longer required its students and masters to engage in such rigorous renunciation but instead substituted more moderate and socially acceptable forms of renunciation. While asceticism as a category may seem unproblematic for scholars of Early Christianity, Islamic Studies scholars are studying different religious contexts and worldviews that should be analyzed without the weight and baggage of the English and Christian term asceticism. Many of the concepts associated with asceticism that were mentioned above do not integrate neatly into the Islamic worldview nor they embody the practices of zuhd. I contend that thinking of zuhd generally as renunciation instead of asceticism allows for much greater malleability within the various traditions of Islamic renunciation that do not conform to the ascetic (Christian) standard. Second, I argue that renunciation as zuhd has not had one particular meaning or one specific mode of praxis throughout Islamic history and that the clash of zuhd archetypes has been a hallmark of Sufism since its nascent days in the desert until its most recent struggles in the modern era. The Islamic renunciant can be both the wandering outcast, who prays to God in solitude away from society, and the active socialite, who maintains an occupation and possesses a family. When referencing Hofstede s four cultural dimensions it is apparent that the United States and France have different perceptions of one another. The United States views the French as arrogant, flamboyant, hierarchical, and emotional. Whereas, France views the United States as naive, aggressive, unprincipled, and it s people being workaholics. Whereas, Americans are the complete opposite, meaning that they are more willing to take risks and are less traditional when it comes to rules and regulations. The third cultural difference is masculinity. Masculinity is defined by Hofstede as a trait, which emphasizes ambition, acquisition of wealth and differentiated gender roles. (Tidwell, n.d) A society that is focused on money and success is said to be high in masculinity. The United States is an example of an area that is high in this dimension. For example, when the Disney company decided on opening a park in France they didn t even take into consideration how the French would react or what type of impact this could have on the their culture. The common perception is that because celebrities are very wealthy, they get special treatment, and the recognition they get from fans is what makes them perfect, but society never puts focus on the disadvantages of their lifestyle. In author Mary Loftus, The Other Side of Fame, some of the downsides are the lack of privacy and the chemical dependence celebrities use to help cope with all the pressure from the fame. If I was a celebrity, the downsides that come with the fame would affect the mental stability I have as a normal person, and therefore make it difficult for me to manage that lifestyle. The due process model relies on the underlying principle that an individual cannot be deprived of liberty, property, or even life without appropriate legal procedures and safeguards. This is a procedural safeguard for the accused to ensure their guilt is beyond reasonable doubt and is another feature of the due process model. Another due process feature of the CJS is the panel of lay people known as the jury which decide upon the guilt. This is a feature of the due process model as again it protects the rights of the defendant as expected by the due process model. An example in context of the due process model in the CJS is in relation to the Woolwich murder of Drummer Lee Rigby. This is my ideal example of the due process model being implemented in the CJS of England and Wales, this is because although the two men (Micheal Adebowale and Micheal Adebolajo) were quite visibly caught on tape and actually waited to be arrested they were still given their right as human beings to undergo the due course and process of the law as they still had a trial and were still allowed to appeal. The film director Randal Kleiser cast a previous academy award nominee, John Travolta and rising Australian star Olivia Newton John and it now is the epitome of their careers. The work devolves from its first chapters, however, and becomes something very different by the end of the novel. A Connecticut Yankee s climactic, blood letting ending, in particular, stands out as amateurish bungling by the author. Twain, in a burst of what seems, upon initial investigation, a beginning writer s attempt to resolve a novel that has spiraled out of his control, kills off his antagonists and finally his protagonist as well. It seems that Twain throws his hands up in frustration and ends the action in an orgy of electrocutions and Gatling gun fire. . . . the book is chaos. I will also address O Neill and Singer s main expositions and their application on the issue of famine relief. O Neill formulates her beliefs based on the ideas of Immanuel Kant. Kantianism is founded on the belief that one must never treat themselves or another person as a mere means. O Neill believes that the intention to perform an action, rather than the consequences of it, is what determines the moral worth of one s actions. Additionally, she would argue that Kantianism revolves around actions reflecting one or more personal maxim, or rule of conduct with which one guides their life. In conveying the Kantian perspective, O Neill formulates a duty based argument. When applying our duty of beneficence, she highlights that we have a responsibility to perform acts that refrain from using people as mere means, as well as to help develop and promote the other person s ends, while fostering their capacities to pursue their goals. O Neill further continues to mention our duty of justice, which implies that we have an obligation to give to those in need, but prioritize those that we personally know or are in close proximity to.
