Defining Essay
Crafting an essay on the topic "Defining Essay" may initially seem like a straightforward task,
but as one delves into the intricacies of the subject, the complexity becomes apparent. The
challenge lies not only in presenting a clear and concise definition but also in exploring the
multifaceted nature of the essay itself.
To start with, defining the term "essay" requires more than a dictionary-like explanation. It
necessitates an in-depth understanding of the historical evolution of essays, from their origins to
their contemporary forms. The writer must grapple with the diverse purposes essays serve,
ranging from persuasive to informative and reflective. Exploring the nuances of how essays can
adapt to different rhetorical situations further complicates the endeavor.
Moreover, the task involves addressing the evolving nature of the essay in the digital age. The
impact of technology on the way essays are written, disseminated, and consumed adds another
layer of complexity. Discussing the influence of social media, online platforms, and changing
reader expectations on the essay genre requires thorough research and critical analysis.
Additionally, the writer must consider the subjective aspect of essays, as they often reflect the
author's unique voice, perspective, and style. Balancing objectivity with personal expression
while maintaining coherence poses a creative challenge. The process of articulating a
comprehensive definition while acknowledging the diversity within the essay genre demands a
nuanced and thoughtful approach.
In conclusion, the difficulty of writing an essay on the topic "Defining Essay" lies in navigating
the intricate web of historical, rhetorical, technological, and subjective dimensions inherent in
this literary form. It requires a keen analytical mind, research skills, and the ability to synthesize
information cohesively. As with any academic endeavor, successfully tackling this challenge
requires time, effort, and a deep appreciation for the complexity of the subject.

Charlie
Charlie is a strange character as He is a very reserved but sometimes does not

had begun to get upset by the way she was acting, but refrained from telling her his
emotions, when the situation came where Patrick asked him to kiss the prettiest
girl in the room, he decided to kiss Sam besides Mary Elizabeth. This action is an
example of Charlie s passiveness affecting his social life as he has trouble expressing
himself and telling others how he really feels about things, Sam questions him about
this nearing the end of the book. Charlie s passive aggressive personality ruins
relationships with his peers, him hiding his feelings lead to situations building on top

Symbolic Interactionism In Sociology
Social Theory Essay Sociology views and analyzes people in multiple aspects as
well as at a macro and a micro level. There are three main theories that sociologists
have formulated which, when used together, help to explain our social lives and the
different facets of it. Symbolic interactionism is one of these theories, and will be
the focus of this essay. Each theory is a lens in which we can view social life, and so
each theory differs in their interpretation of it. In order to evaluate and analyze how
symbolic interactionismis utilized within sociology, there will be a focus on how it is
applied to a certain aspect of U.S. culture. This aspect will be the symbols of fitness
and muscle reflecting masculinity and femininity. However,... Show more content on

Symbols are defined as things that we attach meaning to such as: school, love, and
cellphones. Understanding symbols is key to how we view the world and
communicate with one another . Symbols have meaning attached to them, so
without them, we would not be able to distinguish our relationships. There is no
distinction between police officers from criminals, mothers from teachers, or
brothers from sisters. In defining our relationships, we know whom to respect and
whom we owe our obligations to, as well as who gives us our privileges (p. 23).
And so, symbols allow people to define how they will behave and perceive others.
Symbols do not necessarily have to be designated to humans. They can also be
designated to other things as well. Symbols give meaning to books, pets, as well as
time of day, such as afternoon or midnight. These symbols allow for the coordination
of planning and actions as people can plan get togethers, blueprints, and classroom
discussions. Symbol meanings and ideas can also change over time, whether it be
overnight, or over generations. One can change from friend to boyfriend overnight,
but ideas of equality have changed and been modified throughout history. And so,
symbols are not essential to only individual people, but to society as well. Symbols
have meaning not only in the now, but have had meanings in the past and the future,
although the meaning may not have been the
Persuasive Essay On Aerophobia
Aggravating Aerophobia
Huge fires burning up the runway, thousands of people screaming and running for
their lives, but most of all the fear that you could have been one of them. Why
would you not be afraid of flying, also known as aerophobia, when 583 people died
in a single plane crash? On March 27,1977, plenty of us changed our minds about
flying in planes and helicopters when the biggest plane crash in history occurred on
the Los Rodeos Airport runway. Aerophobia affects umpteem people and could hold
you back from life s many adventures. If you are one of the millions of sufferers of
aerophobia, it may be helpful to know the origin, the causes of it, symptoms, and how
to overcome it.
Not the entire population knows what causes aerophobia, or even the origin of it,
which could be terribly unhelpful if you are trying to overcome it. Actually,
aerophobia could be from a countless number of other fears, either all combined
together or just a single one. These can include the fears of combined spaces and
heights. It can also be connected to any crashes, havoc, and other experiences you
have heard of or been involved in. One other cause may be if you have a certain
sickness, which would probably just embarrass you. Even if we can agree on what
causes it, the origin is not very clear. According to sources, the actual word was
first recorded from about 1765 1775. Later in time, near 1911, came the first known
use of aerophobia. All in all, the causes of aerophobia vary

I decided to do the choreography track for this assignment. I chose to interview one
of my favorite undergraduate professor. Dr. Dale Gunn is a professor of both
history and psychology. The walls of his office are filled with multiple degrees. He
is a US Veteran, and has had many interesting careers such as a diver for Jacques
Cousteau, IBM computer programmer, FBI analyst, Police Psychologist, Criminal
Psychologist, as well as a college professor. After emailing Dr. Gunn he agreed to
answer my questions for this assignment. I called and ask If your discipline (or your

Persuasive Essay On Saving For Retirement
When you are young you always hear people saying it is never too early to start
saving for retirement, but at that age the last thing you want to do is put your
money towards ending the career you are just trying to start. It is hard to imagine
a time where you won t have to go to work on a daily basis, to make a wage, in
order to pay your bills, but the ultimate goal is getting to that time in your life
where you don t have to go to work and the bills are already taken care of. The hope
for everyone is that the bills are taken care of and you are able to focus on leisurely
things you did not have an opportunity for while employed. What we fail to realize is
that the longer we wait to save the more we have to be concerned with the pressure of
time running out and not enough money saved. Not to mention the sooner you start
savingthe more time you give your money to grow.
Let s be honest, we simply can never have enough money, so when you are planning
for a time where you have no income you must prepare accordingly. Many Americans
are under the false impression that when they retire Social Security will cover their
living expenses, but the reality is that the average Social Security benefit is $1180.80
per month. With the federal minimum wage being $7.25, a Social Security check is
nearly equivalent to a minimum wage job, which is hardly a livable income for
most people. The average wage needed for a two bedroom apartment throughout our
country is $20.30, so that goes to

A Brief Biography of Joseph Stalin Essay
Joseph Stalin was born Ioseb Djugashvili in Gorgi, Georgia. He was the third son of
Yekaterina and Vissarion Djugashvili, and the only one to survive past infancy. His
parents had a violent marriage, with Vissarion beating hos wife and son. His parents
had very different ambitions for Stalin, with his mother encouraging him to become a
Russian Orthodox priest and his father believing that a working class life was good
enough for Stalin. When his father returned from Tiflis to bring Stalin back to the
factory, in which he worked, to become an apprentice cobbler brought the argument
to a head. His mother brought Stalin back to Gorgi, and got him back on the path of
attending seminary. After this incident, Vissarion ended the marriage. Stalin

This helped Stalin become very popular among the lower class. The first few years
after the revolution were spent building his post as general secretary into a very
powerful communist party. Before Lenin s death, a triumvirate of Stalin,
Kamenev, and Zinoviev was created. But soon after, Stalin switched sides and
decided to join Bukharin to start an opposition towards Trotsky, Kamenev, and
Zinoviev. By 1928, Stalin s supremacy was completed and he exercised complete
control over both the party and his country. Stalin s last rise to power was the order
to assassinate Trotsky in Mexico. Before the order, due to friction between the two,
Stalin had frequently requested that Trotsky be relieved of his position, but it was
believed that Trotsky would be a better leader than Stalin. After his death, only two
member of the Old Bolsheviks were left. This being Stalin and his foreign minister,
Vyacheslav Molotov. Despite Lenin requesting Trotsky served as the Communist
Party s commander, this did not happen. Stalin decided to forget the traditional
emphasis of the Bolshevik on revolution, framed a new policy attempting to
establish socialism in soviet Russia. Trotsky termed this the Permanent Revolution
and wanted to spread it across the world. Stalin became the party s leader because of
his cunning manipulation of his opponents. He even went as far as to create a severe

The Cause Of Poverty In The United States
Poverty is one of the most prevalent issues in our world today. In many third world
countries, most of citizens live in poverty. Somalia is one of these third world
countries that have extreme rates of poverty. There are many factors that have led to
these major rates of poverty. Somalia s economy is very bad because of the high
unemployment rates and piracy. Because of the civil war that happened in Somalia,
the government is not able to help decrease povertylevels. Lack of education in the
country makes it difficult for people to get jobs. The economy, the government and
the education levels are some of the most prevalent issues leading to this high rate of
poverty within Somalia. The economy in Somalia is one of the major reasons for such

Education is very important for everyone to have but many of the schools that
were located within Somalia are gone, In Central South Somalia more than three
quarters of public schools that existed before the civil war have been destroyed
and/or closed and state intervention in the education sector has been limited.
(Education in Somalia, n.d. para. 2). Meaning that many of the children who live
in Somalia, are not getting a proper education. Even if they go to receive an
education, they are not there for very long, Children are in school for an average
of only three years, with 50 percent of the child population contributing to the work
force. (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 9). Because these people live in such
poverty, these children choose to work to earn some money instead of receiving
an education. Many people in the country are illiterate, Only 37.8 percent of the
population over the age of 15 can read and write. (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 8).
Because of these facts, many of the Somalian people cannot get better jobs. This
also makes it extremely difficult for the Somalian people to go to different countries
in search for a better life. These are the reasons why the education of the Somalian
people have a major effect on the high poverty levels in the

Bebop Jazz
Jazz is a genre of music in which improvisation is typically an important part. Jazz
has had a major influence on most popular music genres in the 20th century such as
rock, hip hop, Latin and the list goes on. There s a genre of jazz for every single
individual out there which makes it such an interesting topic and from there branches
another very popular subgenre of jazz called Bebop.
Bebop is a style of jazz which was developed in the 1940s. Bebop had the effect of
removing jazz from the mainstream of popular tunes which was mainly for dancing
and focused on music that was presented as a form of art other than entertainment.
Just like many subgenres of jazz, bebop was invented by African Americans around

anything your pursuit to be but should be wise as well. Parker followed his dreams
and what he wanted to do but because he didn t make smart choices with his life, it
ended too soon. I think without Parkers story and music; the world would be
different. Without his tragic passing, the legend would have lived on and continued
to stun us with more music. I strongly believe he is up there looking down at his
music and is proud of what he has contributed to this generation. As the sayings go

Summary Of Just Walk On By Brent Staples
Brent Staples memoir Just Walk on By is a short powerful story of what his daily
life is like as a black man in America. Staples works for the New York Times as an
editorial writer and also an author. He has written two books, the first a memoir
named Parallel Time: Growing up In Black and White and second called An
American Love Story (wikipedia.org). He is a well educated man who not only
received his BA in behavioral science but also continued his education as far as
receiving his Ph.D. in psychology (thehistorymakers. org). Due to his successes, it
makes his memoir more shocking to see that despite his life accomplishments, he
still struggles in a world that has racial stigmas. Brent Staples is a great example of
how to write a memoir due to his organization of the text, literary devices, and his
use of rhetorical appeals. In the following essay, these rhetorical strategies Staples
uses will be broken down further to show why his essay is a strong mentor text. The
first way Staples accomplishes his well written memoir is that he knows how to
appealto his audiencewith the way he constructs his text. It is highly likely that this
essay appeals to multiple groups of people, but the most obvious would be the
appeal to other black male individuals that can relate to him and the struggles he
faced. He also mentions at the beginning of his memoir about his first victim, and
this could be another audience he is appealing to the white female. One way he
appeals to his

later became canon and archdeacon of Reims. He was elected pope on March 12,
1088 and was the head of the Catholic Church from 1088 to 1099. In the Roman
Catholic Church, Pope Urban was beatified in 1881. Pope Urban II made one of the
most influential speech in the Middle Ages which gave rise to the Crusades. He
convinced European Christians to reclaim the Holy Land in Jerusalem from the
Muslims. He also influenced allied European states to support the First Crusade.
In March 1095, a Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus requested to Pope Urban
for help against the Turks and his response was the First Crusade at the Council of
Clermont. The Council of Clermont was an assembly reform that was called by
Pope Urban on November 18, 1095 and lasted until November 28. On November 27,

Pope Urban II speech gathered hundreds of nobleman and clerics, and in his speech
he summoned the rich and poor to stop fighting and lead a righteous war to help
the Christians from the East take back Jerusalem. His speech starts by him telling
everyone about how the Holy Land is taken over and then he talks about what the
attacks had done to the inhabitants and saying how desecrated the churches are. He
then asks for everyone to stop fighting amongst each other and to begin fighting for
what is theirs. Pope Urban s call for war mobilized the clerics all throughout Europe
to gather support for the crusade against the Muslims. About 60,000 to 100,000
people, which included 200 Bishops and Archbishops, 4,000 ecclesiastics, and 30,000

Normal Saline Use in Trauma Patients
For decades prehospital providers have been treating trauma patients by initiating
intravenous access and administering crystalloid fluids. The debate has been over
what crystalloid fluid to administer for volume replacement, at what amount, and if
we should be administering fluids at all. Many products are available and much
research has been conducted with results showing that not all fluids are created equal.
Some products have the ability to replace volume but provide little more benefit and
may actually be harmful. Other products, when administered at much lower volumes,
provide far greater benefits and greater potential for a positive outcome for the
patient. Most ground ambulances carry Sodium Chloride 0.9% (Normal Saline) even
though all research shows that its performance is inferior in comparison to other
fluids. In this paper we will look at several recent studies, in which the effects of fluid
administration/volume replacement in hypovolemic trauma patients are measured,
with a concentrated look at normal saline.
So what happens to a trauma patient when they are bleeding? Most people will
instinctively make an attempt to keep the blood inside their body because they know
it is better to have it inside you than on the ground right? And when first responders
arrive they are well trained to identify bleeding and control it. Pressure, dressings,
ice, elevation and even tourniquets are used to keep the red stuff inside this patient s
body. If we can t see the
Meditation Six By Edward Taylor Essay
Edward Taylor s Meditation Six uses a coin based conceit to explore the
ambivalence of the persona; using the coin, Taylor describes his spiritual value to
God in material terms. The first stanza reflects an uncertainty within Taylor about
his worth to God. He equates himself to gold, asking if he is thy gold (1) or merely
a vessel for God s wealth the congregation. The speaker worries he may only appear
to be worthful to God, but he is worthless underneath and brass in heart, alluding to
the Brazen Serpent of the Bible. Working through his ambivalence, the speaker
compares the impression of the grace of God to the stamp on a coin, and he asks if
God has left such an impression on him, stamping value onto worthless metal. Taylor
writes that he is a golden angel in God s hand, meaning he is valuable to God, which
ends his ambivalence as he concludes that he is worthful as a man. In the final stanza,
the speaker asks God to make his soul the plate, a blank coin, onto which God stamps
value with his superscription in a holy style (16). The speaker then becomes a coin
with value to God, part of God s hoard, whereby Taylor acknowledges that he is one
of many. A surrender ends the conceit and poem, the speaker asks if he may be an
angel, period slang for an English coin, in God s eyes and if God may be his Lord.

The Current Polices Placed On Occupational Health And

Over the past several years, the Canadian economy has continuously grown and
expanded into new industries. The expansion has created numerous jobs for
Canadians and is gradually bringing us out of the recession. As well, international
companies are emerging into Canada which again helps boost employment rates and
GDP. A recent example would be Target opening stores all throughout Canada.
Although these expansions are bringing the country more business, we have to look
at protecting the workers in the new and existing markets. Employment health and
safety has been an ongoing concern and with these new emerging markets, there

There are many direct and indirect hazards that need to be taken into consideration. If
the hazard includes a chemical or air pollutant, then the company must indicate the
potential harm to its employees and residents surrounding the area. For example,
there was a study done to assess the effect of occupational exposure to formaldehyde
on the risk of lung cancer in two Canadian population based case control studies.
Formaldehyde (CH2O) is an organic compound widely used throughout the world,
particularly in the production of resins used in the wood (pressed wood products),
paper (paper product coatings), and textile (permanent press fabrics) industries. It is
also found in varnishes, glues, and plastics . Assessments were conducted using
various studies, data collection and variable definitions. It was concluded that
individuals were often exposed at low concentration levels, which ties into dose
response assessment. Ultimately the results did not support an increased risk of lung
cancer among workers exposed to formaldehyde. However, it won t always be the
case where the results will be positive. If changes were to occur in a company dealing
with chemicals, that may result in different conclusions about the safety hazard. That
is why there should be tests conducted more frequently to avoid any personal harm
occurring

then if you were dishonorably discharged from the army, everyone knew you for it,

Structural Differences Between Tubz And The Rest Of The...
Sofia Paz BIO 206 Writing Assignment #3
Detailed Focus Question: What role do the structural changes in GTPase domains
between TubZ and the rest of the Tubulin family play in the function of TubZ in
plasmids and bacteriophages?
Introduction Before examining the structural differences between TubZ and the rest
of the Tubulin family, it will be necessary to give background on both. Specifically,
what Tubulin is and the common characteristics of the Tubulin family, Tubulin s
role in the cell, what TubZ is, what it s role is, and what similarities it shares with
other members of the Tubulin family. A general layout of the paper will also be
given at the end of this introduction. General layout would briefly describe the order
of the sections to follow.
Tubulin
What is it? Tubulin is a family of proteins which belong in to a bigger family known
as globular proteins. Globular protein refers to a particular class of protein
characterized by its spherical like shape and water solubility. The Tubulin family
contains proteins which make up microtubules.
What is its function? Since Tubulin makes up microtubules they play a role in the
structure of eukaryotes and form the cytoskeleton. They also play a role in
chromosomal separation in mitosis/meiosis.
FtsZ is the prokaryotic homolog of Tubulin (eukaryotic protein). One reason it will be
useful to mention FtsZ is because, while the
Polyydipsia Experiments
Polydipsia is defined as consuming an abnormal amount of water drinking
compared to the ideal intake throughout a day. People with Polydipsia intake much
larger quantities of water compared to those without. This is found to be a symptom
of those with a disease including physiological disturbance. Polydipsia is known to
emerge many years after the first episode showing psychotic behaviour which
reduces intellectual functions involving thinking and remembering. The purpose of
this was experiment was to gain a better knowledge about the matter that wasn t
resourcefully looked into before. There was no record of understanding the
neuropathology of this disease therefor it could not be dealt with appropriately.
During the first experiment the Sprague Dawley rat (male) was obtained at weaning.
These rats are commonly used in medical research due to the advantage of their
calmness and ease of handling. During the first experiment the rats were addressed to

experimental paradigm released a pellet that consisted of 45mg dustless precision

The control paradigm provided the 120 pellets freely in a dish. Both groups had free

Songs Of Innossence In William Blake s Songs Of Innocence
Have you ever thought to yourself what God relates to you as? In songs of
innocence William Blake describes him as a goat they are both mild and meek in
a way. Next do you ever have dreams and desires about something you re passionate
about? Well in the Hollow Men they have a desire to focus on their hopes and
essential qualities about themselves. Finally, tell the truth about your bad deeds in
life or you will have to suffer the consequences like in the demon lover. If you
would suffer I guess you will just have to read. These types of modern literature
involve values that are very important where we learn from them. Songs of
Innocence has Strength, Courage, and loyalty. The Hollow Men have love of
action and adventure. Then the Demon Lover has a very serious tone. All three of
these literature era s are from the modernism period which they all talk about
love, courage, and faith also maybe a little death. This literature will bring you back
in time and try to overthink. The time period of modernism was when war went on.
There is a short story called the Demon Lover that mentions a little about the World
War Two. Songs of Innocence involves a Goat that is described as a strong, brave, and
wild. But God also has the same characteristics which William Blakesymbolizes the
goat for God because they are both meek and mill. There was a little boy who was
saved by God and felt whole again God is faithful and stepped up to be someone he
didn t need to be.

Competitive advantage is the most important aspect of any successful business.
Competitive advantage has an ever changing finish line and companies must ensure
that the continually improve their competitive advantage. Businesses must have a
generic strategy that is reflected in the cost or differentiation of their product or

must be something that customers are willing to pay for. The value proposition will
determine the resources and processes that the company will use and in turn, affect
the profit business model which will need to provide profit to the company above the

Customer Needs and Competitive Advantage
Eleanor s strategy for competitive advantage is to incorporate a one stop shop type
of beauty service to improve and grow her business operation, to help her increase
revenue, and to bring the business into the 21st century. With Organics Salon
currently losing business by turning customers away during high demand periods,
her main focus will be on customer lock in which can be accomplished by
providing alternative services for customers while they wait. Currently Organics
Salon customers have high buyer s power so when they are turned away due to
overcrowding, customers can easily go to competitors for services. Additional spa
services can help to keep customers occupied while they wait for their hair service,
increase revenue, and reduce the rejection of customers. Customers will also be able
to purchase the salon s products for at home use.
The sole use of natural, organic, and environmentally friendly products should also
increase Eleanor s competitive advantage as it doesn t reject current customers but

Tribal Gambling Research Paper
Tribal Involvement in Organized Gambling The development of tribal casinos or
what is commonly referred to as organized gambling can be credited to Native
American reservations. Gaming operations have brought phenomenal success to
many native tribes in America, and there has been a new dimension to the existing
debate regarding Native American sovereignty in organized gambling. There are over
310 casinos ran by about one third the nations federally recognized tribes, and
generate around $10 billion in revenue which is one sixth of all revenue generated
through legal gaming in the country (Evans, Topoleski, 2002). Many of the tribes are
now able to provide for themselves essential services rather than wait for the
government. However, most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is important because the Native American nation s self governance remains
deeply ingrained in America s jurisprudence. In turn, this provides a crucial backdrop
against which analysis of any state law can be contrasted. A wide difference of
opinion exists about the costs and benefits among both Indians and non Indians.
However, gaming on reservations has grown rapidly since 1988 with experts stating
that the trend will continue the same way for some time. This means that the
sovereignty issue remains the greatest significance for Native American tribes and
state governments. State governments will be affected due to the newly empowered
assertions of Native American sovereignty. A good example is the recent ratification
by California Senate and Assembly of the new tribal gaming compact. This case that
was between the state and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians was a great
revelation on how good work can be accomplished through government to government
negotiations (Evans, Topoleski,
What Is The Archetypes In To Kill A Mockingbird
Literary criticism is an informed written analysis and evaluation of a literature. Also
literary theory is a means to understand the various ways people read and connect
through texts. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird (TKAM) by Harper Lee, the
story displays archetypal criticisms through using multiple archetypes within the
work. This criticism displays how reoccurring symbols, situations, and themes help
develop the story. Throughout the novel, the archetypes being the hero, victim, and
the tree as a symbol for friendship are used. The hero archetype is reflected numerous
times in TKAM. One character who shows heroic traits is Scout when the text states,
Jem shrieked and tried to catch me, but I had a lead on him and Dill. I pushed... Show

Tom Robinson, who was the main victim of the novel, had been defended by
Atticus who had said, And so a quiet, respectable, humble negro who had the
unmitigated temerity to feel sorry for a white woman has had to put his word
against two white people s (Lee 273). Tom came to be a victim because he suffered
from the statements that Bob Ewell said and was cheated. Although he is against
white people who have their stories wrong and filled of lies, he is the one who
loses the case when this should not have been what occurred. As a result of this, it
causes him to be sent to prison where he later kills himself. This is due to the fact
that this ruined his emotional state which led to the build up to his death.
Similarly, Boo is a victim as his image is ruined by people such as Miss Stephanie
Crawford whose rumors say, As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into
his parent s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his
activities (Lee 13). Boo is a victim because he is deceived. Since not much is
known about him, the town of Maycomb spreads rumors, which lead to false
impressions about him. Also, he suffers by how he is perceived because this leads
for him to not come out and face all of the prejudice within Maycomb. Most
importantly he is emotionally hurt because in the beginning of the story Jem and
Scout are curious about him and want to see him when he does not want to be with
anyone at all. Likewise, Jem is a victim as he was being helped from the encounter
with Bob when he was with Scout because it was seen that, Jem s arm was
dangling crazily in front of him (Lee 353). As Jem and Scout are coming back, Jem
is mainly a victim since he is physically harmed from this event by having his arm
broken by Bob Ewell. He was targeted by Ewell due to the actions of Atticus, which

Descriptive Essay On My Pet Dog
My Pet Lola My pet dog, Lola is a very interesting dog. We really don t know much
about her, but we still love her and take care of her. Our Lola is a rescued dog from
the Romney Sport s Park. An old couple found her under a car while my class was
at the park because it was the last week of school, and we went for all the things we
have done in that grade. My mom came with us to watch and supervise, when she
found her on a leash by an old man. My mom wanted to know if we could keep her if
we came by later and he agreed that we could take her. It was that day on June 2,
2015 when we accepted her into the family! She has been a great addition to the

The cool thing about her is that she is a schnauzer without the cut and average

hug you in the person who is holding her. She will not mind, but she does not like it
when you shut her mouth. Lola will squirm and will want to leave you at that
exact instant. A couple tricks we taught her are to sit and to go to her room when it
is bedtime or when we have to leave the house. She is still not trained to go pee on
a piddle pad, but that is a problem with all of our dogs, just as it is with pooing on
the piddle pad. Lola loves to play with people, but she really loves to play with our

Physics of Neurons Essay
The human nervous system is divided into two parts, the central nervous system and
the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system, CNS, is just the brain and
spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system, PNS, includes the nerves and neurons
that extend outwards from CNS, to transmit information to your limbs and organs for
example. Communication between your cells is extremely important, neurons are the
messengers that relay information to and from your brain.
Nerve cells generate electrical signals to transmit information. Neurons are not
necessarily intrinsically great electrical conductors, however, they have evolved
specialized mechanisms for propagating signals based on the flow of ions across their
membranes.

Dendrites are the primary target for synaptic input from other neurons and compose
the extensive branching. The complexity of the dentritic branching is directly related
to the number of inputs a neuron can recieve. So neurons with lots of dendrites are
able to process information at a greater rate than neurons with fewer dendrites.
Most neurons do not make direct connections with surrounding neurons, signals
(molecules) must make the transition from the presynaptic (upstream) neuron to the
postsynaptic (downstream) neuron. This transition space is called the synaptic cleft.
The exchange of information from the pre to postsynaptic neuron is called a synapse.
Information conveyed by the synapses on the dendrites is processed and projected
from the axon. The axon is extraordinary, it is specialized for signal conduction to
the next neuron. Axons vary in length, the ones in your brain are relatively short in
comparison to the axons that run from your spinal cord down to your foot (about a
meter long).
The electrical event that projects the signal along these distances is known as an
action potential. The action potential runs from the axon hillock to the end of the
axon where more synaptic contacts are made. Target cells of neurons include nerve
cells in your brain, spinal cord, cells of your muscles and various glands.
Axons are like wires in
Antigone Viewpoints
In Antigone one of The Three Theban Plays, Antigone creates a plan to bury her late
brother. This plan involves taking extreme risks in order to achieve this illegal act.
Whether or not this act should be allowed is widely debated between characters. The
viewpoints on the matter from characters Antigone, Ismene, Creon, and The Chorus
provide detailed explanations on each of their opinions about burial and loyalty.
Going against the written rules, Antigone (sister of Ismene) believes her late brother
should receive a proper burial. To Antigone there is no other option but burial, her
passion on the subject is what started the argument with her sister Ismene. Despite
being her sister, Ismene is very different and shares complete opposite views on the
matter than Antigone. Ismene initially thought Antigone would want to keep her plan
to bury him private, Ismene did not fully understand how devoted Antigone is to
orchestrating this burial ceremony. Antigone s intentions became clear to the reader
and Ismene when she stated Shout it from the rooftops. I ll hate you all the more for

Origin of Mass of Subatomic Particles Essay
This past October of 2013, François Englert and Peter W. Higgs were jointly
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics for 2013. For the theoretical discovery of
a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of
subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the
predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN s
Large Hadron Collider . Both Englert and Higgs proposed the theory of how
particles acquire mass. It was 1964 when both men proposed this theory
independently. It wasn t until the year 2012, that both men had their ideas confirmed
by discovery of the Higgs Bosonparticle (particle responsible for giving mass to
objects) at the CERN laboratory in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These forces work over different ranges and have different strengths. That is to say,
Gravity is the weakest; the electromagnetic force has infinite range but is much
stronger than gravity. Three of the fundamental forces result from the exchange of
force carrier particles; these belong to a group of particles called bosons. Particles of
matter transfer discrete amounts of energy by exchanging bosons with each other
(CERN). Each fundamental force has its own corresponding boson the strong force is
carried by the gluon, the electromagnetic force is carried by the photon, and the W
and Z bosons coincide with the weak force (CERN). That is to say, The Standard
Model includes the electromagnetic, strong and weak forces and all their carrier
particles. This new particle was somewhat consistent with the Higgs boson, but it
will take more research to actually determine if it is the same Higgs boson
predicted by the original Standard Model. Being that protons are filled with
subatomic particles like quarks, antiquarks, and gluons they rarely pass or collide
with each other. That is to say, at a mass of about 125 GeV, the Higgs boson particle
turned out to be approximately one hundred times heavier than a proton. The Higgs
boson particle showed that particles due have mass. This played a unique role in the

For all of the tests conducted, the same apparatus was used, and the sample materials
in the system were not altered between any of the tests. Seeing as the same apparatus
was used for all tests, the inner chamber diameter of 2 inches remained constant for
all tests. Additionally, the apparatus was purged with nitrogen immediately before the
start of each trial to ensure that diffusion did not begin before the start of the timer.
The information that was recorded for each test included the elapsed time, the weight
of the condenser both before and after collecting the vapors, and the distance from the
point of collection to the gas liquid interface. In addition, the room temperature and
pressure was recorded each day due to the role of these measurements in calculating
the predicted values. For the testing of acetone, data was gathered at half hour
intervals ranging from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. During these trials, the room
temperature was recorded at 22.5в„ѓ and the room pressure was 29.18 inches Hg.

Chakra Opening
Chakra Opening What Is The Right Way To Achieve This?

Our chakra system consists of eight main chakras with each chakra situated at a
different body points. If you need to check the health of the chakra, it is reflected
by the health of body region where chakra is positioned. The chakras are connected
with our personality traits and are centers of energy within our body. Our body
consists of eight main chakras, each located at different positions and associated with
a color.

There are energy healers who help in opening of the chakras, balancing them as well
as putting energy in them. But there are some other ways too to achieve the same. In
the preceding paragraphs we will learn different ways to open up the chakras.
To open the chakras you need to first imagine light glowing at each chakra and the
beginning of this is done at the root chakra or the base. The color of this light is
red due to this chakra color being red. One way to open the chakras is by making
use of binaural beats whose effect is immediately seen. This method also saves you
from years of intense meditation training for opening of the chakras. Isochronic tones
and monaural beats are some other ways to open the chakras.
The next way is to practice meditation for opening the chakras. Anyone can get into
this practice. There are spiritual masters who have all their chakras open and our
three chakras positioned at the spine bottom are already open. The heart chakra, the
fourth chakra is closed for many people. If this heart chakra is open, then you are
able to give out love and compassion. By practicing meditation you will be able to
open the higher chakras which are the centers of
Electronic Discovery And The Legal World Essay
Introduction It is no secret that technology has changed the way that many things
are done in our culture today. The legal world is no exception. When lawyers work
on cases, there is usually a lot of reading involved. This takes a lot of time and a team
of lawyers that is expensive to employ. Electronic Discovery(e discovery) is
technology that has cut down on this time and cost, and has significantly changed the
legal world. It is softwarethat can analyze documents and extract key words or
phrases. In a case concerning CBS, lawyers and paralegals examined 6 million
documents at a cost of $2.2 million. With the use of e discovery, one company was
able to examine 1.5 million documents for $100,000. E discovery can help lawyers
pick out words, phrases and it can even detect patterns in behaviors. This software is
essential for the legal world because it could prove guiltiness through uncovering
hidden activity of criminals who may otherwise not have been caught.
Discussion Questions 1. Many of the advantages are listed above in the Introduction,
but e discovery includes much more than just reading through documents. The
software can switch to different medias such as text messages, emails and telephone.
The Cataphora software can also detect the feeling of an email. It can tell if the email
has a positive or negative message. The main advantages, besides being able to sift
through millions of documents that may uncover evidence, are
Richard Taylor Meaning Of Life Final Draft
Richard Taylor Meaning of Life Final Draft (Question 5)
Introduction:
Camus explanations of the Myth of Sisyphus, presented the concept of the absurd by
outlining the beliefs that an individuals life has worth but only his live in a world
that denies such worth to survive. Therefore, the absurdity in the statement, explains
the fact of a clash between the orders through which an individuals mind hard for,
likewise the lack of order that we as humans find in the world.
Therefore, the Myth of Sisyphus of Camus states that the only serious problem of
philosophy is suicide, meaning that, he believed that suicide admits the fact that life
is not worth living, in other words meaningless. And so, he posed a question by
asking, why, do people not commit suicide? Thereby, making his, description of
absurdity to come into play or existence. Camus posed that people are not logical in
the act of killing themselves, instead, they do believe in the absurdity of their own
lives as an individual.
Camus absurdity explains the forces upon itself with regards to an individual or
person, especially when that person desire is to find a total absolute in other to
guide his or her life; however, the individual goes out to search for absolutes but
ends up finding out that the world is not reasonable or realistic for living in other

The History Of Colonial Latin America
When the Spanish and the Portuguese established the colonies in the Americas, not
only did they bring their material culture of technologies, clothes, cuisines,
architecture, crops, and animals but they also brought their intellectual traditions
such as that of honor. The history of colonial Latin America gives many questions
related to the understanding of honor. The culture of honor during this period of time
was pivotal as it provided a set of values that organized society and individual lives.
Legal codes, social gatherings, seating arrangements were all mixed in with cultural
meanings, which helps define status within a system of honor. Honor is also seen
within fiction produced from the colonial Latin American period with the production
of work such as Don Juan Tenorio and Don Quixote. These dramatic works glorify the
chivalric tradition of honor, romanticizing it and creating a flattering fiction that the
eliteof colonial Latin America found convenient to strive for. Literary critics and
cultural historians have studied the structure honor code of this period closely and
in this book it can also be seen that honor can be irrationally inflexible, cruel and
especially oppressive toward those of lower class, tainted lineage and female gender
during this time. In this book, The Faces of Honor: Sex, Shame, and Violence in
Colonial Latin America, scholars Lyman L. Johnson and Sonya Lipsett Rivera take
on the difficult but exciting task of trying to define the idea and
Questions On The Chinese Room
In Minds, Brains, and Programs John Searle objects to Computational Theory of
Mind (CTM), particularly that running a program on a computer and manipulating
symbols does not mean that the computer has understanding, or more generally a
mind. In this paper I will first explain Searle s Chinese Room, then I will explain
CTM and how it relates to the Chinese Room. Following this I will describe how the
Chinese Room attacks the CTM. Next I will explain the Systems Reply to the
Chinese Room and how the Systems Reply actually undermines Searle s conclusion
in the Chinese Room. Then I will describe Searle s response to the Systems Reply and
how that response undermines the Systems Reply. Lastly, I will evaluate Searle s
reply to the Systems Reply and defend the Systems Reply against the points Searle
raises against the Systems Reply. To explain the Chinese Room I will first explain the
instructions in the Chinese room; then I will explain how the man inside the room
manipulates these instructions. Finally, given that the man only operates the
instructions, Searle s conclusion is that the man does not understand Chinese.
Therefore, the whole system does not understand Chinese. The instructions in the
room are a complex set of rules that guide the man inside to receive inputs and
produce outputs all written in Chinese. The instructions, written in English, tell the
man if you see this Chinese symbol paired with this Chinese symbol put down these

Paper Impact On The Ancient World
The Effect of Paper on the Ancient World
There are many inventions that people use on a day to day basis without thinking
about what life would be like if they had not been invented such as computers and
cars. One of these inventions is paper, which is frequently used for multiple purposes
like books, art, and important documents. The making of things like books and art
vastly increased when paper spread across the ancient world. Paper allowed for an
easy to transport and long lasting material for writing on. It also provided a
different way of currency that made item exchange easier for merchants. The
invention of and use of paper in the ancient world was extremely significant and
helped to make many civilizations more advanced because it was easily accessible,
made a new way of paying for goods, and increased the amount of literature and art.
It is believed that paper was first invented in 105 AD by a man named Cai Lun who

The growth rate of US healthcare expenditures, increasing annually by nearly 5%

Persuasive Speech On Prayer In School
Prayer in school should have been a big part for those who believe in it, but why
take it out of the schools when the majority of students take religion seriously?
Well, I m going to tell you how is happened and when and by who started this
controversy. So is this considered a joking or serious m matter? What do you
think, is prayer and religion going to be handled as a joke or serious matters in
schools? What is prayer? Prayer is the act of oneself who believe in Christianity or
any type of religion. It is the act of talking or sending your thoughts and worries
and asking for support through ones god. It s like talking to a friend but receiving
answers through ones faith or belief for anyone s issues they might upon their
heart. So would this be considered a joking a matter? Honestly if you were a cold
hearted closed off to the world type of person then you probably wouldn t take
someone s beliefs serious, other people however do. Prayer has always been a
controversial topic from the people who study Scientology from the people who
have a really deep faith in the word of the lord and how the earth was created and
how we all came about. Well that idea and the meaning of prayer soon changed all
because of one atheist woman who believed prayer was corrupting children and
changed prayer in school and its involvement in the curriculum forever. Well here
is the hand that holds the answers! Let s ask ourselves though, how well will prayer
and religion be handled in schools? Before we answer that question, if you are a firm
believer of God the man who created all humanity and all thing let us try to
understand who he is or what he is. So who is God? While most people would like a
straight forward answer of who god is, no one has yet to answer this question, it is
strictly based on one s belief and how they perceive the image of their lord and savior.
No one can explain what he looks like or even when he was born or when he died.
Most Christians and other of other religions all believe he died on a cross, but there
are many perceptions of who he is and how he died and was born. If you do believe
in the lord and savior then you ultimately understand he is who holds all the answers.

The Price Family In Poisonwood Bible By Barbara
Kingsolver
In Barbra Kingsolver s Poisonwood Bible, there are numerous distinct perspectives
within each member of the Price family. However, the most compelling evidence of
perception is the Price family towards the father, Nathan Price. There is a common
consensus between the Price family that Nathan s arrogance and ignorance has
resulted in their excessively timed stain in the Congo. Throughout the course of
Poisonwood Bible, each character in the Price familyperspectives cohesively alters
towards disgust for Nathan. The Price family emphasizes their resentment towards
Nathan s decision for them to remain in the Congo. Once the family was given a
warning to leave, Nathan refused the offer due to his overwhelming arrogance. As a
result, the Price family revealed their bitter input by exclaiming: Father would sooner
watch us all... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, the family started to realize that Nathan s drive is not to help the
Congo receive salvation, but for his own self centered motives. He screams to
Rachel and Leah saying God despises a coward who runs while others stand and
suffer (238). Nathan tries to impose guilt amongst his family with hope that they
will gain sympathy towards the people whom dwell in the Congo. However, the
peril in the Congo becomes a prevalent threat to the Price family, and evacuation
would be pivotal for their own safety. Moreover, the family started losing faith as
Nathan forces their stay in the Congo. Leah exclaimed in the text, [Our stay in the
Congo] has opened up in my heart a sickening world of doubts and possibilities,
where before I had only faith in my father and love for the Lord (244). From the
Prices perspective excluding Nathan, their faith has diminished because of the
method in which Nathan demanded their stay in the Congo. Thus, Nathan is the
driving force for the Price family s loss of faith and

Bill Gates Research Paper
There are many unique and fascinating people of all ethnicities and races. There are
people who are smart, and there are people who are not as smart. Out of all the
diverse people in the world, I would want to be like Bill Gates. Bill Gates was born
in Seattle, Washington in 1955. Bill Gates is an inventor, a programmer, and an
investor. He has founded many companies, most notably the MicrosoftCorporation. In
his early life, he programmed a version of a programming language called BASIC for

When you are rich you can enjoy life. Wealth is the ability to fully experience life
(Henry David Thoreau). With a lot of money you could buy your dream house and
live in it with your wife and kids. You could buy your kids whatever they want. You
could relax by a pool with a glass of wine while your kids swim in the pool. There
are infinitely many options available to you when you are rich. Another reason
why being rich is nice is that you can help the people in need. According to
worldhunger.org, in 2014 11.3% of the world s population, or 805 million people
were malnourished. With a lot of money, you could donate to companies that are
trying to help the people in the world who are undernourished, making the world a

The General Causes Of The French Revolution
French Revolution, also called Revolution of 1789, the revolutionary movement
that shook France between 1787 and 1799. There are many reasons why the French
revolution may would have started. Such as the cultural, social, financial, political,
economic. The French Revolution had general causes common to all the
revolutions of the West at the end of the 18th century. The first of the general
causes was the social structure of the West. The feudal regime had been weakened
step by step and disappeared in parts of Europe. The increasingly numerous and
prosperous wealthy commoners, merchants, and manufacturers. The peasants, lots
of them owned land, had attained an improved standard of living and education
and wanted to get rid of feudalism so as to acquire the full rights of landowners and
to be free to increase their holdings. Furthermore, higher standards of living had
reduced the mortality rate among adults considerably. The Revolution took shape in
France when the controller general of finances, Charles Alexandre de Calonne,
arranged the summoning of an assembly of notables. In February of 1787 to
propose reforms designed to eliminate the budget deficit by increasing the taxation
of the privileged classes. The assembly did not want to take responsibility for the
reforms and suggested that the Estates General, which represented the clergy, the
aristocracy, and the Third Estate also known as the commoners. There were efforts
made by Calonne s successors to enforce fiscal
Contingency Management
Although contingency management has yielded impressive short term results, more
research is needed to obtain convincing long term results and evidence that will
support the notion that this treatment can sustain long term beneficial results for
those with substance abuse issues. There have been issues with patient relapse,
particularly in the case of smoking addictionand schemes should be developed in
order to combat these relapses and create a more effective intervention programme
(Higgins, Silverman and Heil, 2008). More public knowledge is also needed about
contingency management as an intervention for addiction as it is not as well known
as other drug counselling or addiction treatments/centres. If more knowledge is
distributed about reinforcement and contingency methods, more substance users may
come forward for treatment.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, some clinics may receive donations that can help them fund
reinforcement prizes for patients or perhaps get small grants to help with costing. An
option for clinics is to provide not just money and voucher reinforcements but also
other rewards such as lunches out, employment or take home doses of methadone
(Petry, 2002). Although there is potential for contingency management based
treatment centres to become quite expensive, it may be less expensive and more cost
effective than other treatments associated with drug use, for example a stay at the
emergency centre in hospital or inpatient stays in hospitals and clinics. In the long
run, contingency management treatment centres may greatly reduce the cost of
addiction treatment. Furthermore, if these centres become more prevalent and
possibly the dominant method of treating addiction and substance abuse, the number
of addicts and abusers could greatly decrease further decreasing the cost of treating
The Battle of Hastings
The Battle of Hastings Why Did William Win?
On the 14th of October 1066, Duke William of Normandy defeated King Harold at
the Battle of Hastings. His win could be summed up by the fact that William was a
better leader. Other factors that contributed to William s victory include: William
was better prepared, the English army was severely weakened as Harold had just
fought off an invasion in the North of England, and Harold made a fatal mistake of
prematurely entering the Battle of Hastings.
William was a better leader because although Harold had the upper hand in the battle
and they were losing, William managed to outwit and defeat the English. In the
Bayeux Tapestry there is a scene depicting that in the days preceding the ... Show

Although he was victorious in both of them, his troops were exhausted and did not
have sufficient energy to perform at their best. At the beginning of the battle, he
managed get a good advantage he positioned his troops on top of a hill, making it
difficult for William to get to his army and attack him. However, towards the end of
the battle, William set a trap to draw Harold from his strong position and he fell for
it. Once they were on even ground, Harold s exhausted troops could not counter the
attacks from William s well trained and nourished army.
The biggest mistake Harold made was entering the Battle of Hastings too early.
Harold lost some of his best fighters at the Battle of Stamford Bridge earlier that
day and the rest of his army were tired out from their previous battle. When they
finally arrived in the South, he was overconfident that he could win this battle
because of his recent victories. Because of his misjudgement, he decided to rush
into battle with exhausted and unprepared troops. Towards the end of the battle, he
fell for the trap that William had set, seeing as he was tired and his troops couldn t
wait to finish them off and get a good rest. If he had given his army only a few days
rest and fed them like William had to his troops, his chances of winning the battle
would have been a lot higher.
Ultimately, it was a

Project Plan The importance of the project plan is to outline what the project will
accomplish, the time it will take, what resources, the timeframe for completion and
finally a way to evaluate the success and failures of the project. According to
Meredith Shafer (2010), a project plan should focus on the following key elements:
project overview, scope, business case, milestones, resources, risk managementplan
and an evaluation at the conclusion of the project (p.218). The utilization of these
key elements will allow Duke Energy to properly establish a well organize project
that has a clearly defined scope and deliverables. The main goal of project planningis
to establish why the project originated and exactly what must be accomplished...

Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen
Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen
Since the threat of war in some part of the world everyday and because of the
colossal impact that it has had on our lives, it doesn t seem surprising that it is a
popular theme of poetry. Sonnets are an extremely passionate form of poetry, used to
show how the poet feels in their heart; both Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen create
this passion in excellent, but very different ways. Anthem for Doomed
Youth by Wilfred Owen is a Shakespearean sonnetreflecting on the callous life at
war. Owen wrote this poem during his four months at
Craiglockhart, a war hospital, whilst recovering from trench fever.
Faced with many fatally injured men, this must have inspired him to write a great
deal. Unlike ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Made up of an octave and a sestet, the first stanza follows the
Shakespearean sonnet form, whereas the second follows the Petrarchan sonnet
pattern. Together the two stanzas invite the reader to visualize the prominence of
the deceased soldier. Combining England s traditions, legacy and his patriotism,
Brooke talks of the place where he will spend his after life which is a cross
between England and heaven. There is not as much of a connection between the
poet and reader in Brooke s sonnet as he is addressing you If I should die, think only
this of me . I prefer the way in which Owen gets the reader interested by getting them
to question their thoughts.
In parts of the poem I feel that Brooke is just an arrogant man;
That there s some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
With this, Brooke makes it apparent that he believes that wherever he is buried will
become purer as his English body shall turn to dust and become a part of it. I find
this overly intense and I am almost disgusted, as I find it hard to believe that
someone could feel so superior by merely being English. Although Owen s poem is
also very intense I find it easier to understand his thought process and can read it in
agreement. Whilst saying this, in Brooke s case, it may just be ignorance and he
could quite easily be excused due to the fact
William Howe s Impact On Britain
William Howe, better known as General Howe, made a large impact on Britain and
the rest of Europe. William Howe was born on August 10, 1729, in England.
William was also the youngest of three brothers in his family. His parents were
wealthy members of the English upper class. His father s name was Viscount
Howe, and his mom s name was Maria Sophia. When William was about twelve
years old he was sent out from his home to go to Eaton, a famous preparatory
school. William was a good student and eventually graduated in 1746. After
graduating he joined the King s army. He was later appointed officer of one of the
King s military s. General Howe, as a young boy, had great exceptions to uphold, and
he exceeded all of them and became a favored warrior for Britain.... Show more

Howe fought in many battles that impacted British and destroyed the colonists
throughout the course of his lifetime. General Howe fought in a major battle... the
battle of New York! In June, Howe ordered his army to sail towards New York.
They arrived at New York on June 25, 1776. The first landed on Staten Island, east
of Manhattan. More ships came to New York everyday for about a month after
Howe s arrival. Then on July 12, William s brother, Admiral Richard Howe, arrived
in New York. With him were about 150 warships, carrying 10,000 British and 1,000
German soldiers, plus guns, ammunition, and other supplies. William Howe is now
commanding an army of about 32,000 soldiers and is ready for the attack on New
York. Then on August 25, the British started mowing down the Colonists who started
to retreat. The British have won this battle and are one step closer to whiping out the
Redefining Gender Roles Of A Streetcar Named Desire
Oscar Madera
Dr. Amaya Anderson
ENGL 103
8 May 2016
Dissecting Gender Roles in A Streetcar Named Desire The representation of gender
roles is among the most prominent recurring subjects in theatre, literature and
expressive art as we know it. Gender, and what it means to human beings, is a
subject that is as difficult to precisely define as death, race, and the concept of
existence. Anne Beall, Ph.D. graduate in Social Psychology at Yale University, details
in her book The Psychology of Gender that Gender is socially defined masculinity
and femininity. Social psychology studies how gender is defined, created, and
maintained through social influence, especially in the course of social interaction
(Beall; 10). The nature of gender roles is ultimately dictated by temporal, societal,
biological and even geographical dimensions that are out of our control and though
it is a given that gender as a concept has kept as relevant as it is ancient, there has
only been under a hundred years of significant progress or general awareness on the
matter. The subject matter of important art in any given time period is a reflection of
that society s most urgent struggles and the topic of gender has remained a constant
across human history. The physical and emotional features of characters in art and
literature are manifestations of the creator s perception on subjects such race and
gender. The message that a creator seeks to deliver on a topic, determines how they
will convey the thoughts,

Drunk Driving, My Story
Drunk Driving, My Story My dad taught me how to drive his truck the second my
feet could reach the gas pedal. I loved the idea of being able to get into a vehicle
and to have the freedom of traveling anywhere you wanted to. I got my first
vehicle, a beat up Jeep Wrangler, that I repaired with my dad. When I finally got
my drivers license, I felt like I had the world in my hands. That was before the
accident. Now when I think of long road trips, I tense up and grow increasingly
anxious. Whenever I am at a stoplight, I become restless as I stare at the red light
and nervously glance around me for any cars coming my way. I have to drive a big
SUV or else I become very uneasy. I get easily startled on the road and flinch at
cars that come near me. I don t enjoy driving anymore. The thing is, this could have
all been prevented by a simple decision. Driving drunk is not worth the emotional
and physical impact you put on other s lives. December 15, 2015, 8:43 pm. I was
on my way to get a white elephant gift for the Christmas party I had the next day.
As I approached the green light, I quickly decided to go into the left turn lane to go
a different route. As I sat at the red light, I fiddled with the worn away part of my
steering wheel partly out of boredom and partly from being nervous about the final I
had the next morning. I looked around blatantly not knowing that in the next couple
of seconds, my life was going to change. I looked in the rear view mirror at the blurry

Beowulf Comparison Essay
Beowulf is an Old English epic poem and is the longest surviving piece of poem in
Old English literature. The poem is set in Scandinavia and revolves around a hero
of the Geats. Beowulf. He comes to the aid of the Dane king, Hrothgar. The Danes
suffer the reproaches of a creature they call Grendel. Little does the great hero
Beowulfknow that killing Grendel was just the beginning of an avalanche that would
lead to more dire events. The book and the movie have many similarities. They
maintain the setting of Denmark. The characters maintain their personalities and
conflicts also remain. The Geats are portrayed to live off the profit they make from
slaying undesirable beings. In both the movie and the book, the Geats are heros
whom vanquish... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A beast called Grendel ravages their feasts and celebrations they hold in their
kingdom, massacring many innocents. The problem faced by the King of the Danes
is represented effectively in both movie and book.
One of the major differences between the movie and book would be how Grendel
is described. In the movie he is depicted to be something that crawled out of a
swamp. He is mossy, and has a grungy complexion. He doesn t look like a frightening
beast capable of causing mass destruction.
In the book, Grendel doesn t quite have a swampy look. He has a massive form
with great sharp claws and hands large enough to squash thirty grown men. The
mental image created by his description is truly frightening. The book emphasizes
Beowulf s power and strength in his ability to stop the beast. The movie doesn t give
Beowulf the credit he deserves and doesn t accurately show his prowess.
The legendary poem of Beowulf and The Geats has remained a thriving work in
literature. It is not a wonder it has survived this long. It demonstrates strength and
creates tension that has readers enticed in the words. The movie doesn t quite do the
poem justice in showing the magnitude of this

For my dance history lineage project, I chose three different choreographers who
helped each other in their careers. My timeline includes what choreographer taught
who and when. The choreographer at the bottom of my timeline is Ruth St. Denis.
Ruth St. Denis was an American modern dancer who started to dancein 1906. Taught
by Ruth was Martha Grahamwho was also modern American dancer and

American modern dancer. All the people that I have chosen are modern dancers
showing that that style was probably famous then.
Ruth St. Denis, born in 1879, was from a small farm in New Jersey. As a child, Ruth

  • 3. Symbolic Interactionism In Sociology Social Theory Essay Sociology views and analyzes people in multiple aspects as well as at a macro and a micro level. There are three main theories that sociologists have formulated which, when used together, help to explain our social lives and the different facets of it. Symbolic interactionism is one of these theories, and will be the focus of this essay. Each theory is a lens in which we can view social life, and so each theory differs in their interpretation of it. In order to evaluate and analyze how symbolic interactionismis utilized within sociology, there will be a focus on how it is applied to a certain aspect of U.S. culture. This aspect will be the symbols of fitness and muscle reflecting masculinity and femininity. However,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Symbols are defined as things that we attach meaning to such as: school, love, and cellphones. Understanding symbols is key to how we view the world and communicate with one another . Symbols have meaning attached to them, so without them, we would not be able to distinguish our relationships. There is no distinction between police officers from criminals, mothers from teachers, or brothers from sisters. In defining our relationships, we know whom to respect and whom we owe our obligations to, as well as who gives us our privileges (p. 23). And so, symbols allow people to define how they will behave and perceive others. Symbols do not necessarily have to be designated to humans. They can also be designated to other things as well. Symbols give meaning to books, pets, as well as time of day, such as afternoon or midnight. These symbols allow for the coordination of planning and actions as people can plan get togethers, blueprints, and classroom discussions. Symbol meanings and ideas can also change over time, whether it be overnight, or over generations. One can change from friend to boyfriend overnight, but ideas of equality have changed and been modified throughout history. And so, symbols are not essential to only individual people, but to society as well. Symbols have meaning not only in the now, but have had meanings in the past and the future, although the meaning may not have been the
  • 4. Persuasive Essay On Aerophobia Aggravating Aerophobia Huge fires burning up the runway, thousands of people screaming and running for their lives, but most of all the fear that you could have been one of them. Why would you not be afraid of flying, also known as aerophobia, when 583 people died in a single plane crash? On March 27,1977, plenty of us changed our minds about flying in planes and helicopters when the biggest plane crash in history occurred on the Los Rodeos Airport runway. Aerophobia affects umpteem people and could hold you back from life s many adventures. If you are one of the millions of sufferers of aerophobia, it may be helpful to know the origin, the causes of it, symptoms, and how to overcome it. Not the entire population knows what causes aerophobia, or even the origin of it, which could be terribly unhelpful if you are trying to overcome it. Actually, aerophobia could be from a countless number of other fears, either all combined together or just a single one. These can include the fears of combined spaces and heights. It can also be connected to any crashes, havoc, and other experiences you have heard of or been involved in. One other cause may be if you have a certain sickness, which would probably just embarrass you. Even if we can agree on what causes it, the origin is not very clear. According to sources, the actual word was first recorded from about 1765 1775. Later in time, near 1911, came the first known use of aerophobia. All in all, the causes of aerophobia vary
  • 5. Veteran Ethnography I decided to do the choreography track for this assignment. I chose to interview one of my favorite undergraduate professor. Dr. Dale Gunn is a professor of both history and psychology. The walls of his office are filled with multiple degrees. He is a US Veteran, and has had many interesting careers such as a diver for Jacques Cousteau, IBM computer programmer, FBI analyst, Police Psychologist, Criminal Psychologist, as well as a college professor. After emailing Dr. Gunn he agreed to answer my questions for this assignment. I called and ask If your discipline (or your job), were a dance, what kind of dance would it be? . His response was immediate and precise. As expected, Dr. Gunn began with a brief history of his family. He said, my ancestors
  • 6. Persuasive Essay On Saving For Retirement When you are young you always hear people saying it is never too early to start saving for retirement, but at that age the last thing you want to do is put your money towards ending the career you are just trying to start. It is hard to imagine a time where you won t have to go to work on a daily basis, to make a wage, in order to pay your bills, but the ultimate goal is getting to that time in your life where you don t have to go to work and the bills are already taken care of. The hope for everyone is that the bills are taken care of and you are able to focus on leisurely things you did not have an opportunity for while employed. What we fail to realize is that the longer we wait to save the more we have to be concerned with the pressure of time running out and not enough money saved. Not to mention the sooner you start savingthe more time you give your money to grow. Let s be honest, we simply can never have enough money, so when you are planning for a time where you have no income you must prepare accordingly. Many Americans are under the false impression that when they retire Social Security will cover their living expenses, but the reality is that the average Social Security benefit is $1180.80 per month. With the federal minimum wage being $7.25, a Social Security check is nearly equivalent to a minimum wage job, which is hardly a livable income for most people. The average wage needed for a two bedroom apartment throughout our country is $20.30, so that goes to

He was the third son of Yekaterina and Vissarion Djugashvili, and the only one to survive past infancy. His parents had a violent marriage, with Vissarion beating hos wife and son. His parents had very different ambitions for Stalin, with his mother encouraging him to become a Russian Orthodox priest and his father believing that a working class life was good enough for Stalin. When his father returned from Tiflis to bring Stalin back to the factory, in which he worked, to become an apprentice cobbler brought the argument to a head. This helped Stalin become very popular among the lower class. The first few years after the revolution were spent building his post as general secretary into a very powerful communist party. Before Lenin s death, a triumvirate of Stalin, Kamenev, and Zinoviev was created. But soon after, Stalin switched sides and decided to join Bukharin to start an opposition towards Trotsky, Kamenev, and Zinoviev. By 1928, Stalin s supremacy was completed and he exercised complete control over both the party and his country. Stalin s last rise to power was the order to assassinate Trotsky in Mexico. Before the order, due to friction between the two, Stalin had frequently requested that Trotsky be relieved of his position, but it was believed that Trotsky would be a better leader than Stalin. After his death, only two member of the Old Bolsheviks were left. This being Stalin and his foreign minister, Vyacheslav Molotov. Despite Lenin requesting Trotsky served as the Communist Party s commander, this did not happen. Stalin decided to forget the traditional emphasis of the Bolshevik on revolution, framed a new policy attempting to establish socialism in soviet Russia. Trotsky termed this the Permanent Revolution and wanted to spread it across the world. Stalin became the party s leader because of his cunning manipulation of his opponents. He even went as far as to create a severe enmity between

Somalia s economy is very bad because of the high unemployment rates and piracy. Because of the civil war that happened in Somalia, the government is not able to help decrease povertylevels. (Education in Somalia, n.d. para. 2). Meaning that many of the children who live in Somalia, are not getting a proper education. Even if they go to receive an education, they are not there for very long, Children are in school for an average of only three years, with 50 percent of the child population contributing to the work force. • 10. Bebop Research Paper Bebop Jazz Jazz is a genre of music in which improvisation is typically an important part. Jazz has had a major influence on most popular music genres in the 20th century such as rock, hip hop, Latin and the list goes on. There s a genre of jazz for every single individual out there which makes it such an interesting topic and from there branches another very popular subgenre of jazz called Bebop. Bebop is a style of jazz which was developed in the 1940s. I think that all his pie ces are so wonderfully constructed and each piece has its own uniqueness but at the same time are so easy to identify as Parkers compositions as they all at the end of the day, have the same effort put into them and has Parkers signature alto sax. The history behind the pieces, Parkers story of how his father left and his rough childhood send shivers down my spine and I think that everyone can learn a lesson from this musical hero. You can be anything your pursuit to be but should be wise as well. Parker followed his dreams and what he wanted to do but because he didn t make smart choices with his life, it ended too soon. I think without Parkers story and music; the world would be different. Without his tragic passing, the legend would have lived on and continued to stun us with more music. I strongly believe he is up there looking down at his music and is proud of what he has contributed to this generation. As the sayings go Legends die but their music will continue to live on
  • 11. Summary Of Just Walk On By Brent Staples Brent Staples memoir Just Walk on By is a short powerful story of what his daily life is like as a black man in America. Staples works for the New York Times as an editorial writer and also an author. He has written two books, the first a memoir named Parallel Time: Growing up In Black and White and second called An American Love Story (wikipedia.org). He is a well educated man who not only received his BA in behavioral science but also continued his education as far as receiving his Ph.D. in psychology (thehistorymakers. org). Due to his successes, it makes his memoir more shocking to see that despite his life accomplishments, he still struggles in a world that has racial stigmas. Brent Staples is a great example of how to write a memoir due to his organization of the text, literary devices, and his use of rhetorical appeals. In the following essay, these rhetorical strategies Staples uses will be broken down further to show why his essay is a strong mentor text. The first way Staples accomplishes his well written memoir is that he knows how to appealto his audiencewith the way he constructs his text. It is highly likely that this essay appeals to multiple groups of people, but the most obvious would be the appeal to other black male individuals that can relate to him and the struggles he faced. He also mentions at the beginning of his memoir about his first victim, and this could be another audience he is appealing to the white female. One way he appeals to his

He also influenced allied European states to support the First Crusade. In March 1095, a Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus requested to Pope Urban for help against the Turks and his response was the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. The Council of Clermont was an assembly reform that was called by Pope Urban on November 18, 1095 and lasted until November 28. On November 27, Pope Urban spoke for the first time about the problem in the east and he announced bellum sacrum against the Muslims that lived in the Holy Land. This ... Pope Urban II speech gathered hundreds of nobleman and clerics, and in his speech he summoned the rich and poor to stop fighting and lead a righteous war to help the Christians from the East take back Jerusalem. His speech starts by him telling everyone about how the Holy Land is taken over and then he talks about what the attacks had done to the inhabitants and saying how desecrated the churches are. He then asks for everyone to stop fighting amongst each other and to begin fighting for what is theirs. Pope Urban s call for war mobilized the clerics all throughout Europe to gather support for the crusade against the Muslims. About 60,000 to 100,000 people, which included 200 Bishops and Archbishops, 4,000 ecclesiastics, and 30,000 laymen, responded to his call to march in
  • 13. Normal Saline Use in Trauma Patients For decades prehospital providers have been treating trauma patients by initiating intravenous access and administering crystalloid fluids. The debate has been over what crystalloid fluid to administer for volume replacement, at what amount, and if we should be administering fluids at all. Many products are available and much research has been conducted with results showing that not all fluids are created equal. Some products have the ability to replace volume but provide little more benefit and may actually be harmful. Other products, when administered at much lower volumes, provide far greater benefits and greater potential for a positive outcome for the patient. Most ground ambulances carry Sodium Chloride 0.9% (Normal Saline) even though all research shows that its performance is inferior in comparison to other fluids. In this paper we will look at several recent studies, in which the effects of fluid administration/volume replacement in hypovolemic trauma patients are measured, with a concentrated look at normal saline. So what happens to a trauma patient when they are bleeding? Most people will instinctively make an attempt to keep the blood inside their body because they know it is better to have it inside you than on the ground right? And when first responders arrive they are well trained to identify bleeding and control it. Pressure, dressings, ice, elevation and even tourniquets are used to keep the red stuff inside this patient s body. If we can t see the
  • 14. Meditation Six By Edward Taylor Essay Edward Taylor s Meditation Six uses a coin based conceit to explore the ambivalence of the persona; using the coin, Taylor describes his spiritual value to God in material terms. The first stanza reflects an uncertainty within Taylor about his worth to God. He equates himself to gold, asking if he is thy gold (1) or merely a vessel for God s wealth the congregation. The speaker worries he may only appear to be worthful to God, but he is worthless underneath and brass in heart, alluding to the Brazen Serpent of the Bible. Working through his ambivalence, the speaker compares the impression of the grace of God to the stamp on a coin, and he asks if God has left such an impression on him, stamping value onto worthless metal. Taylor writes that he is a golden angel in God s hand, meaning he is valuable to God, which ends his ambivalence as he concludes that he is worthful as a man. In the final stanza, the speaker asks God to make his soul the plate, a blank coin, onto which God stamps value with his superscription in a holy style (16). The speaker then becomes a coin with value to God, part of God s hoard, whereby Taylor acknowledges that he is one of many. A surrender ends the conceit and poem, the speaker asks if he may be an angel, period slang for an English coin, in God s eyes and if God may be his Lord. 3.The harsh and unyielding tone of Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is created by the powerful imagery and the address of the congregation. If the hazard includes a chemical or air pollutant, then the company must indicate the potential harm to its employees and residents surrounding the area. For example, there was a study done to assess the effect of occupational exposure to formaldehyde on the risk of lung cancer in two Canadian population based case control studies. Formaldehyde (CH2O) is an organic compound widely used throughout the world, particularly in the production of resins used in the wood (pressed wood products), paper (paper product coatings), and textile (permanent press fabrics) industries. It is also found in varnishes, glues, and plastics . Assessments were conducted using various studies, data collection and variable definitions. It was concluded that individuals were often exposed at low concentration levels, which ties into dose response assessment. Ultimately the results did not support an increased risk of lung cancer among workers exposed to formaldehyde. However, it won t always be the case where the results will be positive. If changes were to occur in a company dealing with chemicals, that may result in different conclusions about the safety hazard. That is why there should be tests conducted more frequently to avoid any personal harm occurring

Sofia Paz BIO 206 Writing Assignment #3 Detailed Focus Question: What role do the structural changes in GTPase domains between TubZ and the rest of the Tubulin family play in the function of TubZ in plasmids and bacteriophages? Introduction Before examining the structural differences between TubZ and the rest of the Tubulin family, it will be necessary to give background on both. Specifically, what Tubulin is and the common characteristics of the Tubulin family, Tubulin s role in the cell, what TubZ is, what it s role is, and what similarities it shares with other members of the Tubulin family. A general layout of the paper will also be given at the end of this introduction. General layout would briefly describe the order of the sections to follow. Tubulin What is it? Tubulin is a family of proteins which belong in to a bigger family known as globular proteins. Globular protein refers to a particular class of protein characterized by its spherical like shape and water solubility. The Tubulin family contains proteins which make up microtubules. What is its function? Since Tubulin makes up microtubules they play a role in the structure of eukaryotes and form the cytoskeleton. They also play a role in chromosomal separation in mitosis/meiosis. FtsZ is the prokaryotic homolog of Tubulin (eukaryotic protein). One reason it will be useful to mention FtsZ is because, while the

Tom came to be a victim because he suffered from the statements that Bob Ewell said and was cheated. Although he is against white people who have their stories wrong and filled of lies, he is the one who loses the case when this should not have been what occurred. As a result of this, it causes him to be sent to prison where he later kills himself. This is due to the fact that this ruined his emotional state which led to the build up to his death. Similarly, Boo is a victim as his image is ruined by people such as Miss Stephanie Crawford whose rumors say, As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities (Lee 13). Boo is a victim because he is deceived. Since not much is known about him, the town of Maycomb spreads rumors, which lead to false impressions about him. The central nervous system, CNS, is just the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system, PNS, includes the nerves and neurons that extend outwards from CNS, to transmit information to your limbs and organs for example. Communication between your cells is extremely important, neurons are the messengers that relay information to and from your brain. Nerve cells generate electrical signals to transmit information. In their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dendrites are the primary target for synaptic input from other neurons and compose the extensive branching. The complexity of the dentritic branching is directly related to the number of inputs a neuron can recieve. So neurons with lots of dendrites are able to process information at a greater rate than neurons with fewer dendrites. Most neurons do not make direct connections with surrounding neurons, signals (molecules) must make the transition from the presynaptic (upstream) neuron to the postsynaptic (downstream) neuron. This transition space is called the synaptic cleft. The exchange of information from the pre to postsynaptic neuron is called a synapse. Information conveyed by the synapses on the dendrites is processed and projected from the axon. The axon is extraordinary, it is specialized for signal conduction to the next neuron. Axons vary in length, the ones in your brain are relatively short in comparison to the axons that run from your spinal cord down to your foot (about a meter long). The electrical event that projects the signal along these distances is known as an action potential. The action potential runs from the axon hillock to the end of the axon where more synaptic contacts are made. Target cells of neurons include nerve cells in your brain, spinal cord, cells of your muscles and various glands. Axons are like wires in

The History Of Colonial Latin America When the Spanish and the Portuguese established the colonies in the Americas, not only did they bring their material culture of technologies, clothes, cuisines, architecture, crops, and animals but they also brought their intellectual traditions such as that of honor. The history of colonial Latin America gives many questions related to the understanding of honor. The culture of honor during this period of time was pivotal as it provided a set of values that organized society and individual lives. Legal codes, social gatherings, seating arrangements were all mixed in with cultural meanings, which helps define status within a system of honor. Honor is also seen within fiction produced from the colonial Latin American period with the production of work such as Don Juan Tenorio and Don Quixote. These dramatic works glorify the chivalric tradition of honor, romanticizing it and creating a flattering fiction that the eliteof colonial Latin America found convenient to strive for. Literary critics and cultural historians have studied the structure honor code of this period closely and in this book it can also be seen that honor can be irrationally inflexible, cruel and especially oppressive toward those of lower class, tainted lineage and female gender during this time. In this book, The Faces of Honor: Sex, Shame, and Violence in Colonial Latin America, scholars Lyman L. Johnson and Sonya Lipsett Rivera take on the difficult but exciting task of trying to define the idea and

To explain the Chinese Room I will first explain the instructions in the Chinese room; then I will explain how the man inside the room manipulates these instructions. Finally, given that the man only operates the instructions, Searle s conclusion is that the man does not understand Chinese. Therefore, the whole system does not understand Chinese. The instructions in the room are a complex set of rules that guide the man inside to receive inputs and produce outputs all written in Chinese. The instructions, written in English, tell the man if you see this Chinese symbol paired with this Chinese symbol put down these Chinese symbols, or if

Well, I m going to tell you how is happened and when and by who started this controversy. So is this considered a joking or serious m matter? What do you think, is prayer and religion going to be handled as a joke or serious matters in schools? What is prayer? Prayer is the act of oneself who believe in Christianity or any type of religion. It is the act of talking or sending your thoughts and worries and asking for support through ones god. It s like talking to a friend but receiving answers through ones faith or belief for anyone s issues they might upon their heart. So would this be considered a joking a matter? Honestly if you were a cold hearted closed off to the world type of person then you probably wouldn t take someone s beliefs serious, other people however do. Prayer has always been a controversial topic from the people who study Scientology from the people who have a really deep faith in the word of the lord and how the earth was created and how we all came about. Well that idea and the meaning of prayer soon changed all because of one atheist woman who believed prayer was corrupting children and changed prayer in school and its involvement in the curriculum forever. Well here is the hand that holds the answers! Let s ask ourselves though, how well will prayer and religion be handled in schools? Before we answer that question, if you are a firm believer of God the man who created all humanity and all thing let us try to understand who he is or what he is. So who is God? While most people would like a straight forward answer of who god is, no one has yet to answer this question, it is strictly based on one s belief and how they perceive the image of their lord and savior. No one can explain what he looks like or even when he was born or when he died. However, the peril in the Congo becomes a prevalent threat to the Price family, and evacuation would be pivotal for their own safety. Moreover, the family started losing faith as Nathan forces their stay in the Congo. Leah exclaimed in the text, [Our stay in the Congo] has opened up in my heart a sickening world of doubts and possibilities, where before I had only faith in my father and love for the Lord (244). From the Prices perspective excluding Nathan, their faith has diminished because of the method in which Nathan demanded their stay in the Congo. There are many reasons why the French revolution may would have started. Such as the cultural, social, financial, political, economic. The French Revolution had general causes common to all the revolutions of the West at the end of the 18th century. The first of the general causes was the social structure of the West. The feudal regime had been weakened step by step and disappeared in parts of Europe. The increasingly numerous and prosperous wealthy commoners, merchants, and manufacturers. The peasants, lots of them owned land, had attained an improved standard of living and education and wanted to get rid of feudalism so as to acquire the full rights of landowners and to be free to increase their holdings. Gender, and what it means to human beings, is a subject that is as difficult to precisely define as death, race, and the concept of existence. Anne Beall, Ph.D. graduate in Social Psychology at Yale University, details in her book The Psychology of Gender that Gender is socially defined masculinity and femininity. Social psychology studies how gender is defined, created, and maintained through social influence, especially in the course of social interaction (Beall; 10). The nature of gender roles is ultimately dictated by temporal, societal, biological and even geographical dimensions that are out of our control and though it is a given that gender as a concept has kept as relevant as it is ancient, there has only been under a hundred years of significant progress or general awareness on the matter. The subject matter of important art in any given time period is a reflection of that society s most urgent struggles and the topic of gender has remained a constant across human history. The physical and emotional features of characters in art and literature are manifestations of the creator s perception on subjects such race and gender. As I sat at the red light, I fiddled with the worn away part of my steering wheel partly out of boredom and partly from being nervous about the final I had the next morning. I looked around blatantly not knowing that in the next couple of seconds, my life was going to change. I looked in the rear view mirror at the blurry truck
  • 53. Beowulf Comparison Essay Beowulf is an Old English epic poem and is the longest surviving piece of poem in Old English literature. The poem is set in Scandinavia and revolves around a hero of the Geats. Beowulf. He comes to the aid of the Dane king, Hrothgar. The Danes suffer the reproaches of a creature they call Grendel. Little does the great hero Beowulfknow that killing Grendel was just the beginning of an avalanche that would lead to more dire events. The book and the movie have many similarities. They maintain the setting of Denmark. The characters maintain their personalities and conflicts also remain. The Geats are portrayed to live off the profit they make from slaying undesirable beings. A beast called Grendel ravages their feasts and celebrations they hold in their kingdom, massacring many innocents. The problem faced by the King of the Danes is represented effectively in both movie and book. One of the major differences between the movie and book would be how Grendel is described. In the movie he is depicted to be something that crawled out of a swamp. He is mossy, and has a grungy complexion. He doesn t look like a frightening beast capable of causing mass destruction. In the book, Grendel doesn t quite have a swampy look. He has a massive form with great sharp claws and hands large enough to squash thirty grown men. The mental image created by his description is truly frightening. The book emphasizes Beowulf s power and strength in his ability to stop the beast. The movie doesn t give Beowulf the credit he deserves and doesn t accurately show his prowess. The legendary poem of Beowulf and The Geats has remained a thriving work in literature. It is not a wonder it has survived this long. It demonstrates strength and creates tension that has readers enticed in the words. The movie doesn t quite do the poem justice in showing the magnitude of this
