A Brief Biography of Vincent Van Gogh
When most people think of Vincent van Gogh, they think of an artist with mental health issues
who cut off his own ear. Some stop at that, but others then progress to think of his Starry Night
painting. Van Gogh is well known for not becoming famous until after his death. In fact, he sold
but one painting during his life, and that was mostly thanks to his brother, Theo. Today, his
paintings are some of the most sought after and expensive works ever to be auctioned. However,
though most modern art appreciators celebrate his paintings, his life, and are well informed about
him, the rest of the world sits by and merely acknowledges him as a talented artist gone awry. It is
not wrong to look at a painting and try to figure out what the artist was thinking when they made it,
but it is a shame to not also try to understand what led them to that point. Why did they produce it
in the first place? This is especially the case with Vincent van Gogh, whose whole life from birth to
death must be examined. Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus successfully bore
their first child on March 30, 1853. Both believed in having a large family and strived for
normality and high social status, which proved to be problematic when little Vincent showed early
signs of aloofness and strange habits. Though he was especially close with his brother, Theo,
growing up, Vincent never really seeked company. For the most part, his childhood was fairly
happy, full of routine Bible lessons from his

Mount Shasta Essay
Mount Shasta: One of Northern California s Remarkable Mountains In far Northern California,
about forty miles south of the Oregon California border, resides the second highest mountain in the
Cascade Range and the fifth highest mountain in California. The Cascades are part of the Ring of
Fire, which is a ring of volcanoes and earthquake sites, around the borders of the Pacific Ocean.
Mount Shasta can be seen for several hundred miles and has struck viewers with its remarkable
beauty since it was first seen. Mount Shasta towers at 14,162 feet, remains snow capped
throughout the year and is often shrouded in oddly shaped lenticular clouds, or fierce storms that
hide it from view. It is awe inspiring in its geography and geology,... Show more content on

It was photographed by the famous photographer Ansel Adams, and it has been the subject of
many famous artists, authors, and poets. It is amazing to look at the mountain on Ariel
photographs, satellite maps, explore it on a 3D tour on Google Earth, or look back at the oldest
maps that were drawn by the earliest explorers and surveyors. The first map was drawn in 1883 by
cartographer and co founder of the National Geographic Society, Gilbert Thompson while working
for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Thompson s map is a sketch rather than a topographic map,
but it is the first fairly accurate representation of Mount Shasta. Thompson included the majority of
the mountain s major features and the glaciers are named on his map (A Historic Mount Shasta
Sketch). Mount Shasta is in Northern California near the Oregon border. We live 88 miles as the
crow flies from the summit of Mount Shasta, and our home faces the East side of the mountain.
The mountain is visible from our kitchen window, our living room, and deck. Although not
visible at times due to cloud cover or hazy conditions it is easily seen on many days. It always
stops me for a moment to look at the massive snow covered mountain. On occasion, it is topped by

The Washington Family Analysis
The Washington Family by Edward Savage, painted from 1789 1796, features American s original
First Family. (Fig. 1) George Washington sits around a table in his Mount Vernon home with his
wife, Martha and her two grandchildren, whom the Washingtons adopted following the death of
their parents. Behind them, a household slave stands ready to serve and a vast landscape sprawls
outside the window. Though the painting appears to be a simple, familyportrait, it actually contains
deeper, political messages.
Savage depicts George Washingtonin a domestic setting to showcase his personal life outside of
the presidency; he is depicted with his family and in his private home. However, he is also shown
in uniform, alluding to his role as general. He does not grasp his sword, but instead rests his hand
on a stack of papers, representing his role as statesman. It was well known that Washington
intended to step out of the public sphere following the war before being elected, and that he
continued to long for a quiet life at home throughout his presidency. In this work, Savage depicts
Washington filling roles of general, statesman and patriarch, making the statement that he can fulfil
all three roles. Further, by depicting Washington as a father figure in his domestic setting, Savage
invites his viewers to connect him with the founding of the nations and thus visually establish him
as the Father of our country. Considering the popular print version of the work distributed around

Essay on The Hour of the Star
The Hour of the Star
As Clarice Lispector was writing what would become her last literary creation, The Hour of the
Star, little did she know that while her body was plagued with the devastations of cancer, her
mental struggle for peace and grace in death would inspire her most renowned novel. Perhaps it is
because of those circumstances, she created a novel with intuitive reflections on both life and death,
as seen through the life of the main character, Macabea. The story is narrated by Rodrigo S.M., and
although Rodrigo attempts to maintain a neutral stance, he is often conflicted by his own
perceptions and feelings. At the book s commencement Rodrigo spends quite some time explaining
that while the story is mainly about a woman, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However if we look at it in the figurative sense we begin to perceive the deeper meaning. Prior to
this statement the narrator talks about how he cannot use big succulent terms, lest the reader
become confused and not be able to understand what is being said. Without that understanding the
reader would become perplexed and the essence of the novel would be lost. So stating it in this
particular way, by symbolizing simple words as bread and more complex words as the gold, the
narrator is explaining figuratively how the author plans to carry out the novel. Thus, by keeping
things simple the author has a better chance of the reader grasping her intent and following the
story line, causing the symbolic starvation to be avoided. This use of language figuratively keeps
the reader on his/her toes.
In the story culture plays a key role in shaping the lives of all the characters. The culture of the
novel seems similar to present day, western world culture where women use there looks and
sensual movements to attract and be adored by men. On the flip side the men show off there
masculinity and use sweet words in an attempt to charm woman. The characters Olimpico and
Gloria, Macabea s co worker, fit this description as a couple, causing it be ever more apparent that
Macabea falls short of society s definition of femininity. Internally she wants Olimpico to like her,
she wants to

The Legend Of King Arthur And Le Morte DArthur
Has a book or movie given enjoyment through a hard time? Thomas Malory and Terry Gilliam
have opposing writing styles as a result of the context they wrote their texts in. Thomas Malory,
author of Le Morte d Arthur, writes his book as a compilation of tales and Terry Gilliam writes
his version as a script for a movie. While both Gilliam and Malory use an episodic narrative,
Gilliam writes his movie as a parody to mock old England and other versions of the Legend of
King Arthur, and Malory uses his book as a story that includes immense details about a legend.
While Le Morte d Arthur and Monty Python and the Holy Grailboth share a common plot, the
works differ on intended purpose and tone. The audiences each author tries to appease changes
each author s writing style; Thomas Malory is trying to appease a fifteenth century audience who
is traumatized by numerous uprisings and despair due to a history of atrocious kings, while Terry
Gilliamis trying to entertain a more modern audience that wants a humorous and satirical
movie. The intended purpose of each of the authors, differ in that each are delivering their works to
a situationally different audience. In the fifteenth century, when Le Morte d Arthur was written,
people were just beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel after a history of tyrannical
kings. Even so, one of the worst Kings of England ever was King Richard III who was reigning
just as the book was written. Although King Richard was not the

Alfred Hitchcock Identity And Identity
The greatest art in films is by the means of the ability to create an emotion in the viewers of the
film and by the means of and imagery. Alfred Hitchcock, for long time, has been a household name
since he began filmmaking. Hitchcock has been able to accumulate a well known and distinct
cinematic techniques making him stand out as one of the best filmmakers around the globe. What
makes Hitchcock s films must watch movies are how he draws his viewers emotion and leave
them in suspense (Maher 246). Hitchcock s The Birds is an American horror filmdropped in 1963.
The film is loosely based on the 1952 story of Daphne Du Maurierand focuses on a sudden series,
unexplained powerful and violent birds attacking the people of Bodega Bay (Maher 247). In this
movie, the fact that viewers do not get to know the details of the birds makes it an interesting but
a suspense film, which evokes thoughts of the audience to know much about the birds. On the
other hand, Identity, which was directed by James Mangold in 2003, revolves around the life of
ten people who seeks refuge in an isolated motel when a vicious storm breaks out in the desert of
Nevada (Falsafi, Khorashad, and Khorashad 2521). As they seek refuge, a serious murderer, Taylor
Vince awaits his execution for killing a group of motel guests. This paper, using terminology
resources and cinematic techniques, seeks to expatriate the similar technique styles adopted in the
two films to enhance suspense. The cinematic techniques

Color In The Great Gatsby
The Colors of Life The helpful acronym ROY G. BIV is used to aid in the remembering the
order that the colors appear in the rainbow. Colors are everywhere: the flowers that grow along
the sidewalk, the shirts that we wear, the cars on the road, and the environment around us. Colors
even have the ability to relay information to us, for example, whether it will rain or not based on
the colorof the sky and clouds, no to touch a snake if certain colors touch, or even is someone is
angry based on the color of their face. Colors are a main focus point in The Great Gatsby, written
by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and are used to express emotions and events of specific characters. A small
but very important color in The Great Gatsby is the color green.

The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning to...
The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning on Organizational Performance
Introduction
Succession planning, which is often also referred to as knowledge management, is one of the ways
in which information is kept within an organization even though the people who work within that
organization come and go. Those who make policies in business, and those who make policies that
assist other businesses, have started encouraging businesses in recent years to learn to help
themselves through succession planning and the management and transfer of knowledge,
specifically between people who are leaving the organization and people who are just entering that
organization (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). One of the reasons for this encouragement is
due to the fact that an adjustment of roles through the transferring of knowledge is an important
way to help any business move through a change of ownership or simply a shift when a long time
employee leaves the company.
Ownership is often not the issue, but management and other developed skills are very significant
when a person is trying to ensure that another person clearly understands the job which he is
taking over and will be performing in the future (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). Many
businesses do not have any serious plans as they relate to succession, and that can be detrimental to
the entire organization. The decision making that would generally take place is disturbed when
people leave the company but do

Comparison Of Cyrano De Bergerac And Roxanne
Well known books or plays are often made into movies. They are often modernized and made
into satirical comedies. This is the case with the play Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand
and Roxanne directed by Fred Schepisi. In Cyrano de Bergerac the main character, Cyrano, is in
love with a beautiful woman named Roxane. Cyrano is a skilled fighter and poet but Roxane is
in love with Christian who is a young cadet. Cyrano helps Christian impress Roxane and Roxane
ends up falling deeply in love with Christian due to Cyrano. This leads to Roxane falling in love
with Cyrano instead of Christian. In the film Roxanne, the classic story is modernized and set in a

The director of Roxanne does a very good job of keeping the relationships between the characters
true to the original play. For example, the relationship between the Roxane and Cyrano roles in
both works. In Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano and Roxane have a good friendship which is apparent
because Roxane goes to Cyrano to tell him about her love for Christian. In Roxanne, Roxanne
goes to C.D for help with getting Chris to like her. This is an obvious similarity between the two
characters in both productions. Another similarity is the relationship between Christian and
Cyrano. In Cyrano de Bergerac, Christian and Cyrano meet when Christian begins to insult
Cyrano s nose. This leads to Cyrano realizing who Christian is and eventually accepting him.
Their relationship develops when Cyrano reveals Roxane s feelings for him. Christian feels very
dim witted when it comes to love so he calls on Cyrano for help. Similarly in Roxanne, Chris and
C. D meet when Chris insults C. D s nose. The two eventually become friends and Chris asks
Charlie for help to have intercourse with Roxanne. These two instances show how similar the
relationships are in translation from the play to the movie

Person to person communication is a wonder which has existed since society started and it has

Essay on Technology in the film Tron
Technology in the film Tron
Introduction
The purpose of my project is to discover how technology is represented within the film Tron. To
answer this research question, I viewed and analyzed the movie and incorporated information from
the text and various websites. While studying this film, I took into consideration factors such as
images and language used, how technology is related to society, and what symbols the creator used
to convey certain qualities of technology. In this research paper, I will begin by explaining the
significance of this project and my areas of research. I will then relay the focus of my

implications of my analysis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This description led me to believe that the outlook of technology at the time, when the Internet was
just being introduced to the public, was fear. People feared the unknown power of the new
technology of computers. Tron is a story of man battling his own creations, which represents
technology as a powerful force with destructive capabilities.
I am interested in this project because I have always liked science fiction/fantasy movies. I like to
think about the possibilities that technology holds for our future. I am also interested in how
technology influences our culture. I was in high school when this movie came out and had limited
access to computers at that time. I wasn t concerned with the impact of new computer technology
then, but remember hearing people say that machines would someday run the world. For
example, I worked for a grocery store in the 1980s and remember other employees worrying that
new machines were being developed that would replace the cashiers, and we would all be out of a
job. I think this movie would probably have a bigger impact now that computers are such a large
part of our everyday lives. Artificial intelligence is still a popular theme for science fiction movies,
so people must like to consider it a possibility. I ve read that there is a possible sequel to the movie

Religion In The Chronicles Of Narnia
Someone in today s day and age resurrecting from the dead is unheard of. Yes, there are some
unexplainable medical mysteries, but the only time we ever hear of someone returning from the
dead is in works of literature or art. Anytime a character is resurrected from the dead, it s alluding
to the biblical story, The Resurrection. The story is about Jesuswho died on the cross for sins of
God s people and three days later rose from the dead in accordance with the scripture and God s
word. It was found that Jesus had risen from the dead, when two women walked to his tomb to

He alludes to The Resurrection, in his work The Winter s Tale. During the story, King Leontes
wrongfully accused his wife, Hermione, and childhood friend, Polixenes, of adultery. He goes as
far as ordering the death of Polixenes, ordering his wife to be tried in court, and ordering the
child Hermione is pregnant with to be abandoned. After his wife dies, the King realizes his
wrongdoings. Sixteen years go by and suddenly a recently completed statue of Hermione comes
to life, an allusion to the resurrection of Jesus. In Act 5 Scene 3, the sculptor, Paulina says, Tis,
time, descend, be stone to more, approach . She continues to say Bequeath to death your
numbness, for him dear life redeems you. Hermione then steps down from her pedestal and
King Leontes says O! If this be magic, let it be as lawful as eating. This scene in the play alludes
to John 20:14 At this, Mary Magdalene turned around and saw Jesus standing there , as well as
John 20:18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news saying I have seen the Lord .
The simile as lawful as eating is used by King Leontes after seeing Hermione come to life. This
helps show the reader the King s desperation for this so called magic to not be temporary or short

longing from the King, that he has felt for so many years since the death of his

Foodborne Illness Is A Big Problem
Have you ever wondered how big of a problem foodborne illness is on the federal level in the
United States? Foodborne illness is a big problem on the public health. Foodborne illnesses are
infections caused by beverages or foods that contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites and/or
chemicals. Foods can also be contaminated with bacteria during the food preparation you do at
home or the preparation done at a restaurant. If the food cooks or food preparers do not carefully
wash their hands, kitchen tools, cutting boards, and other kitchen surfaces that come into
contact with raw foods, cross contamination can occur which is the spread of bacteria from
contaminated foods to uncontaminated foods. If hot food is not kept hot enough or cold food
is not kept cold enough, bacteria can multiply. Bacteria multiplies very quickly when the
temperature of food is between 40 and 140 degrees. Cold food should be kept below 40 degrees
and hot food should be kept above 140 degrees. Bacteria multiplies slower when food is
refrigerated. Freezing food can also slow or even stop the spread of bacteria. But once food is
brought to room temperature once again the bacteria that is refrigerated or frozen becomes active
once again. Thoroughly cooking foods can also kill bacterias that cause foodborne illnesses. The
common symptoms of foodborne illnesses are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and/or the
chills. The Federal government has estimated that there is about 48 million cases of

Vasopressin Case Study
The oxidation of blood components by the oxygen released from erythrocytes may cause
hypothalamic pituitary adrenal insufficiency [67]. Primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency
occurs in patients with sepsis and is associated with a poor outcome [68 71]. Blood oxidation
affects the hypothalamo pituitary thyroidal axis, inactivating thyrotropine , thyroidgland hormones
(triiodothyronine(TT3), thyroxine (TT4) and their binding proteins. Thyroid hormoneregulates
metabolism and has impact on sepsis prognosis. The level of TT4 is lower in patients with septic
shock than in patients without septic shock [72 74]. De iodinations of iodothyronines play key
roles in metabolic regulation [75, 76].
Vasopressin (Antidiuretic hormone) also is oxidized by the oxygen released from erythrocytes.
Vasopressin plays a role in circulatory homeostasis and serum osmolality. Oxytocin and vasopressin

novel and are talking about how the men in their community or area admire kindness and honesty
but love self interest, greed, meanness, or even egotism. This is just an example of how the people
in the community are trustworthy and have kind or nice personalities.
A personal interview with Michael Hemp on John Steinbeck s Cannery Row is a very special video

He says that John wrote this book mostly in memory of friends and picked Cannery Row to
write about because it reminded him of a community with such nice and kind people. Michael
also says that Steinbeck does not write genres of fiction. He states that he only writes about real
things, real people, and also even real places or events. This short interview also shows pictures
of where Mack and his friends stayed all the time. Michael Hemp talks about how cannery row
got the name and what the first item being canned there was, which is sardines. He also says that
it was the canning of sardines that made Monterey Bay famous. This means that the community
was very well known. He shows in the video what Ed Rickett s laboratory and the grocery store
looks like today if someone would visit it. He mentions that Cannery Row is one of John
Steinbeck s best novels and that it is all about a fantastic community that has a great present and
very eventful past. He talks about how Ed Rickett s lab gave children who did not get to

Hypocrite Analysis
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have
preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (1 Corinthians 9:27) The worst thing a leader can
be in the church is a hypocrite. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines hypocrite as a person who
acts in a way that goes against what he or she claims to believe or feel. Before I got married in
1999, I had a lust problem. I was a fornicator. I was going to church every week; but I was bound
by the spirit of fornicationand lust. I wore a holy mask in church, but outside of church, I was

Theories Of Sexual Orientation
Sexual orientation refers to an individual s array of sexual, emotional or romantic attractions to
men, women or both sexes. Categories of sexual orientation typically have included attraction to
members of one s own sex (gay men or lesbians), attraction to members of the other sex
(heterosexuals), and attraction to members of both sexes (bisexuals). While these categories
continue to be widely used, research has suggested that sexual orientationdoes not always appear in
such definable categories and instead occurs on a continuum (e.g., Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin,
Gebhard, 1953; Klein, 1993; Klein, Sepekoff, Wolff, 1985; Shiveley DeCecco, 1977) These ranges

discrimination and how can these be identified and how psychological wellbeing may be developed
in these social groups.
Over the past few decades, a noteworthy change has occurred in the receiving of homosexuality
from the perceptions of researchers and practitioners. Historically, homosexuality was viewed as
a mental illness (Gonsiorek 1991)) and was also taken as a sin and an immoral action rather than
looking at it as an individual difference which imminently lead to a different lifestyle. But, in the

Social Injustice In If You Come Softly By Jacqueline Woodson
Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for each other s
welfare, social justice can never be attained. As Helen Keller once stated, social justice is unable
to be retrieved unless everyone is held accountable for how they treat others. Social injustice is the
improper treatment of individuals due to race, gender, sexual orientation, or age. One is unable to
control these characteristics; however, they are treated with prejudice just for this logic. In
emphasis, many people are subjected to hate crimes and enmity from others, all for traits that one
cannot alter. The classic novel If You Come Softly by Jacqueline Woodson, the young adult fiction

that Junior is given fewer painkillers for being Indian, it exemplifies racial injustice that Junior

Essay On Counterculture In The 1960s
One of the most exciting things about studying more recent history is almost intrinsically
connected to the advent of the photographic camera, which offers spontaneous imagery of events
in the moment that the artwork of the past could only attempt to recreate. The transition from
black and white with a burst of color following the Second World War offered to the public eye a
realistic representation of events that they had not had the opportunity to experience before. Color
photographs boomed in the decades following the war, which provides historians today with a
wide breadth of visual sources with which to corroborate other materials. This is especially true
when examining the documentation of the counterculture in the 1960s. A book called Hippie
compiled by Barry Miles offers a composite portrait of hippies in America in the 1960s,
contextualized with other images from other key events outside of the realm of the... Show more

Although SDS had a number of issues they were passionate about in the mid to late 1960s, their
most crucial point of discussion revolved around the Vietnam War. It could be argued that the
advent of the war was one of the factors that contributed to the increasing militancy of the group, the
group eventually dissolving into multiple factions including the Weathermen. Similarly, the hippie
counterculture eventually developed a strong anti war sentiment regarding the American
intervention in Vietnam. However, the doctrine of love and pacifism resulted in the hippies never
developing militant behaviors in the way that the members of SDS did. This emphasis on non
violence, as the 60s and 70s went on, became an increasingly valuable point in which the hippies
diverged from other groups that shared similar foundational philosophies given that the growing
unrest in America resulted in, for many groups including SDS, more violent

November 1, 2016 Risk Factors for Falls Among Geriatric Population Living in Nursing Facilities
Falls are a major problem in elderly population in the United States living in nursing facilities.
Statistics from Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) show that approximately
800,000 seniors fall each year and 1 in 3 of those will fall twice or one more time in a year.
(Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2012). Most falls are caused by a combination of risk
factors. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling. Healthcare
providers can help cut down a person s risk by reducing the fall risk factors
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Serious injuries have resulted from the falls
such as hip fractures, concussions, decreased cognitive and functional abilities, and increased risk
of death. The cost of treatment resulting from falls is rising each year. According to CDC,
adjusted for inflation, the direct medical costs for fall injuries are $31 billion annually. (Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention,2016). Those who do not suffer severe injuries live with fear of
falling so they restrict their activities, which lead to increased comorbidities.

It is said that the human population will reach eleven billion by the year 2100. We are quickly
becoming overpopulated and with creating human clones, we will surely reach that number much
sooner, making our population far much worse than it already is. Cloning would be a definite aid
to overpopulation. Overpopulation is a problem because it causes us to exhaust our natural
resources. With more lifeforms being created we would all require the same, if not more, nutrients.
As a civilization now, we are currently running thin on basic needs such as food, water, and oil.
Clones would be competing with humans for natural resources and the rate of consumption will not
keep up with rate of production. Overpopulation would lead to the cease of human existence by
diminishing the valuable natural resources we require to survive.

Arguments Against Humanitarian Intervention
Humanitarian intervention is a doctrine that advocates the opportunity to send humanitarian relief
and international armed forces to help the victims of natural disasters or violations of human rights
without the consent of the State concerned. The objective is to rescue, assist, assist and protect
people in danger. This idea has appeared on the occasion of the Biafran War (1967 1970) which
resulted in a terrible famine, but had been ignored by other States in the name of neutrality and non
interference. The term humanitarian intervention was invented in the late 1980s by Bernard
Kouchner, founder of Doctors Without Borders and politician, and Mario Bettati, Professor of
Public International Law. According to them, some emergencies can morally justify a duty to
intervene in the affairs of a state, thus calling into question the principle of sovereignty.... Show

rights and that if it is framed by a supranational organization, essentially the United Nations

right of intervention in humanitarian terms when there is already a binding law (Geneva
Conventions, the Convention against Genocide) and the UN Charter, in Chapter VII, allows
intervention in the internal affairs of a State in the case of threat against peace. Among the other
issues raised, there those actors interference (NGOs, international and intergovernmental

Examples Of Phony In Catcher In The Rye
Holden Caulfield loves to call people phonies. In fact, he uses the word phony 35 times
throughout the book, The Catcher in the Rye. A phony, by definition, means not genuine, or
fraudulent, however, Holden s version of it is much different. Holden uses the word phony so
much in order to help himself understand the world and people around him. He has to put
everyone into a category of personalities, and phony is one of those categories. He repeatedly calls
Stradlater, his roommate at Pencey, a big phony, but Holden Caulfieldfails to realize the fact that he

out of this big clinch, I told her I loved her and all. It was a lie, of course, but the thing is, I meant it
when I said it. I m crazy. I swear to God I am, he goes against everything he has said throughout
the book. In the book, Holden constantly states how other people don t understand the world
and how he hates people who live in a sea of lies. Until this point in the book, his view had been
set in stone with the many examples he presented for the reader. Nonetheless, after this quote, he

changes everything for the reader because it shows that everything he has said in the book could
have been a lie to cover up a secret. On top of this epiphany, he also states that he lied about
loving Sally in the very same quote. This lie is another prime example of Holden being a phony
and not being truthful. All in all, for the whole book Holden calls people phonies, but even while

The Death Penalty Throughout History
This paper explores how society has influenced the development of the death penalty throughout
history. It begins with a brief explanation of the origins of capital punishment, referencing the first
known documentation of actions punishable by death. The paper goes on to explore different
methods of execution and how they have progressed and changed over the years. Documented cases
at different points of history are referenced to show the relationship of time periods and beliefs to
the implementation of capital punishment. Finally, the development of different laws and changes to
existing laws pertaining to the death penalty are addressed. The History of the Death Penalty
The death penalty has changed drastically throughout history. Some of the first known written laws
regarding the death penalty date back to the eighteenth century BCE ( Part I , 2016). It is likely that
some form of the death penalty existed long before written history, with a basis in customs, not
legalities. The death penalty has continued to evolve throughout history, shaping the modern
practices used in the United States and other parts of the world today. The administration of the
death penalty has been shaped by the moral principles of those in authority and the mindset of the
general public at each stage of history. This is shown through the evolution of different methods of
execution, documented cases during critical points in history, and the laws pertaining to the death
penalty at different

Doctor Prescriptions
ortunately for pharmaceutical companies, the United States government has not done nearly
enough to regulate the companies. Pharmaceutical companies are able to spend millions of dollars
on marketing, and not only on the cheesy direct to consumer ads we see ending with ask your
doctor . The drugs that these companies make are not a standard item on the market; one needs
permission to obtain drugs. Pharmaceutical companies understand this, so they spend a majority of
their marketing funds on advertising to health care providers. In 2012, of the $27 million the
industry spent on marketing, $24 million was for doctors (Pew Charitable Trusts). Aside from the
skewed proportions in marketing fund division, 9 out of 10 pharmaceutical companies spent... Show

As previously stated, the actions on the industry do sway a doctor s prescriptions. Many problems
arise from this, namely the fact of expense and health. According to the FDA, generic brand drugs
can be 80% more expensive than their name brand counterpart. The FDA also mandates that each
must be bioequivalent. The doctors prescription could cost 80% more because of the influence of
drug companies. Another factor of this marketing is known as going off label , or drugs being
pushed for symptoms they weren t made for. This is part of the reason opioids have caused the
United States heroin outbreak. Drug companies designed extreme pain killers, meant for
terminal illnesses. That isn t a large market, so companies began pushing doctors to prescribe
them for more and more cases. This is also on the rise with antidepressants and anxiety
medication. Pharmaceutical companies over advertising their drug is dangerous and has
resulted in lawsuits for almost every major drug company. Famously, the English drug company
GSK paid $3 billion in a lawsuit for over prescribing their antidepressant, Paxil (New York
Times). Pfizer, Johnson Johnson, Abbott, and Eli Lilly have all paid at least $1 billion for
pushing off label prescriptions. However, many people support this entire practice because of
the free market, and that companies have the right to advertise. While the free market is an
integral part of Western culture, drugs are not just some product. Prescription drugs are tablets
of complex chemistry backed by scientific research and approved of personal use by someone
who has been to higher education for nearly twelve years. For example, sodas are an item on the
free market. Coke and Pepsi have a right to advertise and try to create the better soda. They may
convince someone to change brand loyalty, and there s little to no consequence. Drugs have life
changing, or life ending, potential and complex

For marketers it may help their businesses if people click on the ads. But for consumers they
have too much power on their computers. I personally think it is annoying having all these ads
on the side on the screen half of them I could care less about. So it does not seem to make sense
as to why they have all this power over what we browse on the internet. Unfortunately though
internet tracking is dangerous and can go a lot further than using information for ads. CBS News
wrote a story on a woman who was stalked and killed through information that is given out on the
internet. Complicating matters further are criminals who break into Web sites, steal the
information and use it for personal gain, (Sullivan.B, N.D). There should be better security tracking
on the internet if marketers are going to have control to see what we do. It also seems that we are
not always educated either though on what settings we have up on our computers. Most people
have their third party cookies enabled because we are unaware of the privacy issues, which result in
the cookies, (Fighting Internet Surveillance, N.D.).. There s nothing necessarily sinister about this
subterranean data exchange: this is, after all, the advertising ecosystem that supports free online
content (MADRIGAL.A, 2012). It seems like there is a divide in what people believe is right
against wrong. In one sense if they did not track what we did companies would have no ads to use

Secret in the Wings was a show with a lot of strengths, but it also contained some obvious

effective example of this is in the transitions. Even while moving set pieces and changing

How Asthma Fit Into The Healthy People 2020
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway that impacts a person s and their family s
quality of life. In people with asthma, their airway becomes constricted with swelling and excessive
mucous. This constriction or narrowing of the airway makes it difficult for the person with asthma
to breath (Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 2009). If asthmais left uncontrolled, it leads
to further wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, tiredness, and stress. (Massachusetts
Department of Public Health, 2009).
How does asthma fit into the Healthy People 2020? As it is stated in Health People 2020, the main
goal is to, Promote respiratory health through better prevention, detection, treatment, and education
efforts. Under this goal, Healthy People list several objectives such as, reducing asthma death,
hospitalizations, emergency department (ED) visits, activity limitations, and miss school and work
days; in addition, increasing education and prevention program (Healthy People 2020, 2014).

first character in his story, Vashti, Is content with her life and would consider society close to a
utopia. The second character, Kuno, Vashti s son, is not as pleased with his situation. The clashing
opinions give the reader a lot to think about when considering Rothstein s idea.
Vashti, the woman at the beginning of the story, lives out her days as many other people of this
time do, sitting alone in an arm chair in the middle of their room. Everything is brought to her at a
moment s notice, which makes moving from her spot a seemingly pointless thing to do. For her,
everything is good enough . When she refers to the way the machine cannot display the emotions
of another, while talking with her son, she disregards the imperfection saying that the idea this
communication is an idea that was good enough for all practical purposes. She goes on to say in
her narration that something good enough had long since been accepted by our race. For her, good
enough is perfect. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But for some reason she seems to worship the machine for things that it has been expected to
provide her with, such as food and clothes and shelter, not to mention things like music and
literature. Everything she could ever need or want was given to her at the press of a button. For
this, she performs a ritual whenever she consults The Book of The Machine , a book which gives
the use of every button in her room, along with other information regarding the machine, such as
the schedule of the air ships. Her ritual consists of her holding up her book and chanting O

Health And Welfare Of The Animal
Introduction
Nutrition is how organisms break down food to makes sure that they take in all the key nutrients
which are need to help the animal survive in it environment. Nutrition is important because it helps
animals: see in the dark, helps animals grow, repair cells, it helps with reproduce and fight of
disease. In this assignment I will be talking about the functions of all the nutrients, the sources
which animals can get these nutrients from and how the nutrient can promote the health and
welfare of the animal. I will also will be comment on the functions and structure of two different
digestive systems for an monogastric (simple stomach) animal (Dog) and ruminant (cow).
So what is macro and micro nutrition?
Macro nutrition are nutrients which animals need in large amount. The nutrients animals need in
large amount are carbohydrates, protein and fats. Micro nutrition is nutrients that animals in small
amount. The nutrients animals need in small amount are vitamins and minerals.
What are fat soluble/ water soluble vitamins?
Fat soluble vitamins are vitamins that dissolve in lipid (fats). Examples of fat soluble vitamins are
vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. Water soluble vitamins are vitamins that dissolve
in water. Examples of water soluble vitamins are vitamin C and Vitamin D.
Nutrients
There are seven key nutrients, which are: Carbohydrates, Protein, Fats/ Lipids, Vitamin, Minerals,
Fibre and Water. I will now be describing the function; the source

Moral Repercussions Of Discrimination
Generally people or groups become stigmatized when they are singled out from their communities
or their social environments. Being stigmatic is not a way to win over moral acceptance. When
individuals are set out or even profiled they often feel as if they have been uprooted and a subject of
discrimination. Which makes them loose faith in there government. Moral repercussions like this
effect individuals and communities as a whole and can have serious and negative impacts when
groups or individuals speak out and acknowledge the discrimination. This can lead to social or
cultural tensions within a governed body. Arguments stating that unspecified surveillance is unfair
because it treats law abiding citizens like suspects without prior wrongdoing miss the point. The
risks of untargeted surveillance... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which is most certainly discrimination. When individuals are subjected to repercussions of
discrimination they often feel as if the standards of the community have not been meet. If they are
innocent of any wrongdoing the individual may show resentment towards the authority. Ultimately
leading to disobedience and distrust, which is exactly what you are trying to prevent. Using the
most un invasive method of surveillance shows the most promising results. The lower the amount
of magnification on the individual, results in less stigmatization. Blanket or patch screenings are
great examples of low magnification implications of surveillance work. They do target specific
places such as airports or schools. But do not discriminate based off any other facts other than
attendance of the establishment itself. They screen these places as a whole so no one in the
establishment is discriminated or treated unequally because of an undesirable trait. These types of
screenings and surveillance methods often show promise both in social acceptance and in

The Onset Of Depressive Illnesses
College can be one of the most exciting and rewarding milestones in a lifetime, it is a transition
to something new. You are preparing for the future and making the change into adulthood.
Although, it you are prone to new experiences and somewhat a new life it may also be very
challenging. It can also be a very testing time for students, especially those who may be at risk of
developing or have already been diagnosed with a mental illness (College Depression). The onset
of depressive illnesses tends tend to begin between the ages fifteen and twenty four; just as
academic pressures are starting to become more prevalent. During this time students are also
adjusting emotionally to complex life changes (Depression in College Students).
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, depression is defined as a serious medical
condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live
in a normal way ( Global ). After finding myself using all 24 hours of my day to write papers, do
homework, study, and go to class without hardly eating or sleeping. I started to ask myself Is it
really worth it, is college really worth my health? Feeling overwhelmed, I then found myself
giving up, not doing homework, not going to class, sleeping all day, not eating, just sad. After,
doing some research I discovered I was in a state of depression which is a prevalent issue among
college students (Neighmond). Depression is the second most treated concern among

The Science Of Team Building
Team Synergy to Succeed Aristotle is credited with stating the whole is greater than the simple
sum of its parts. This also represents the definition of synergy. Synergy is the unified working of
the sum to create something greater than the individual components. For instance a car engine is
comprised of an engine block, belts, hoses, spark plugs, and other miscellaneous components.
Individually these components are not going to propel a vehicle however when put together and
fed some fuel the components create the oomph needed to support transportation. In sports and
business the cooperation and collaboration of people in organizations is no different. The people
within these groups must be working in a unified manner toward a common set of goals and
objectives. This common set of goals and objective provides the end point so that a teamof people
have the necessary oomph, to achieve outcomes that would otherwise be unattainable by a single
individual. The science of team building is an art. The uncontrollable variables are people. Just
putting a group of talented individuals together for the sole purpose of goal achievement can be
met with disastrous results. It can leave individuals left feeling unfulfilled and lead to costly
mistakes in the long run. While team building can be considered an art, there are some methods
and approaches that can assist with successful builds. While no approach is full proof, taking timeto
acclimate oneself with human

The Importance Of Online Education
The year 2014 I majored in Information Technology and received my first Online Education class.
Privacy, space, and concentration are what Online Education provided. Online Education has
granted me a greater learning experience than being taught by the few lazy teachers in the past.
Teachers online provide links, videos, and handout guides for every assignment, anything needed to
complete and learn the materials. Not only has Online Educationgranted me a higher learning
experience, but also saved me an immense amount of money on gas and having the need to drive
daily to class and paying for parking. Many students struggle financially, and online education has
saved me a fortune. It is important to know that Online Education has affected us students in a
positive way where we have the alternative to meet an Education without the need to drive daily to
campus. Each year institutions of higher educationhas offered more courses that are fully online as
well as more that are blended or hybrid in design format (Hoskins and van Hooff, 2005). Colleges
and universities are placing greater emphasis on increasing online education offerings (Allen and
Seaman, 2005).
Online Education is important to have in society, considering that technology revolves around us
as a nation and is going under drastic changes every year and becoming more advanced and in
which anyone can benefit in many ways. As of 2014, at least 25% of the student population at
American universities and colleges had

The Medical Malpractice Liability System
A tort action is brought about through provisions of private law and asserts that one party has
experienced harm from the actions of another party and that the injured person seeks compensation
for the harm (Pozgar Santucci, 2009). Tort reforms are connected to shifts in medical malpractice
law since the 1980 s when moves were made to change from court decided Common Law to
incorporation of statutes from many state legislatures (Waters, Budetti, Claxton, Lundy, 2007). This
paper will discuss the current state of tort law, the need for reform, and proposals for effective
reform. Tort Law Today The medical malpractice liability system in the United States has two main
purposes: (1) to provide compensation to patients injured through... Show more content on

This potential for legal action by patients incentivizes physicians to purchase malpractice insurance
as a protection against the devastation of attempting to pay such extreme amounts out of pocket;
and whether due to the high cost of claims, the opportunity to profit or other forces, malpractice
insurance premiums continue to climb similar to premiums for most other insurance types
(Rakoczy, 2013). Proponents of reform also point to a tendency of physicians to protect against
legal fault finding through over or under utilization of diagnostics and procedures, known as
defensive medicine. For example, although empirical evidence has long supported avoidance of
cesarean deliveries at 39 weeks in the absence of certain medical indications and demonstrated no
better outcomes than vaginal deliveries, a high rate of cesarean deliveries continues in the United
States, which allows the physician to demonstrate they have done all they can to assure a healthy
delivery and position for defense against malpractice (Braunstein, 2012). Complicated by a
healthcare system that financially rewards physicians for providing more services, approximately
thirty percent of diagnostics, procedures, and hospitalizations are unnecessary, do not improve the
patient s condition and may, in fact, cause harm (Braunstein, 2012). Opponents of tort reform state
that the purposes of such tort actions are a protection for the patient and that placing caps on the
amount of damages awarded

The Black Press Analysis
In the Black press, writers and editors could support abolitionism and construct arguments
supporting their humanity and equality on a platform designated for their people. Since the
beginning of the slave trade individuals of African descent have used their literary gifts in print to
convey the injustices of racial oppression. From narratives to poems and novels, African Americans
have had their work circulated worldwide. Black literature had provided consistent and enduring
outlets for African American authors for more than 200 years. The Black Press has been a major
key behind the driving force in conveying the hopes, frustrations, culture, and political strategies for
African Americans. Before and after slavery, African Americans used the

Often, when one paper closed down, another immediately arose to take its place. Although
newspapers were financially and at times physically risky ventures, Black editors were dedicated
to disseminating a variety of ways in which free Blacks could argue against slavery and racism. The
editors and their leadership were, for the most part, Christian, and exhorted Blacks to live in
unison with Christian moral teachings and the mainstream values of the day. The main readers of
Black Press were children and adults with educational opportunities and middle class women and
men who read content that served their communities road to excellence; Free Black communities
were the main audience for Black press. Black press was determined to showcase Blacks who were
providing children and adults with educational opportunities, announcing society events planned by
middle class working men and women, and instructing readers to maintain good manners and
temperance when dealing with racial injustice. This content served at least two purposes. It
provided a picture of Black communities that were building their own institutions and Black life
and livelihood for White readers who might take a glimpse at a Black paper to gain more insight
on the Negro.

The Importance Of Sleep Deprivation
The average amount of sleep obtained by high school students per night is classified as sleep
deprivation, which negatively cognitive functions including: mood/emotion regulation, verbal,
visual, and auditory processing, concentration/attention, and memory. The focus of this paper is
sleep deprivation. Concepts necessary to understanding sleep and sleep deprivation are sleep
control mechanisms, stages of sleep, and the different types of sleep deprivation. There are two
biological mechanisms in the body that regulate sleep. Both processes interact and balance one
another, and together are known as the two process model of sleep wake regulation. These two
sleep controlling mechanisms consist of: circadian rhythm, which is also referred to as process C,
and sleep wake homeostasis, called process S. Circadian rhythm is the regulation of the internal
processes and levels of alertness in the body controlled by the hypothalamus. The two parts to
circadian rhythm include the circadian drive for arousal, and the circadian alerting system. The
circadian drive for arousal is the tendency towards wakefulness, and arousal and alertness generated
by alerting pulses of the circadian alerting system. The circadian alerting system is an alerting pulse
sent out by the suprachiasmatic nucleus throughout the day, which counteracts increasing
homeostatic sleep pressure and creates the circadian drive for arousal. The circadian rhythm is
governed by one s biological clock , which is also

Bear Spread Case
That is :
Maximum Return = Net Premium Commissions Paid,
Where Price of Underlying Security Strike Price of the Long Call
Maximum loss = Difference between strike prices of calls Net Premium or Credit Received +
Commissions paid
Now we notice that the maximum gain that we can attain using this bear call strategy is practically
the credit received upon entering the trade. Therefore, to have maximum profit, the stock price
needs to close below the lower strike price of the two calls and sold at expiration date where both
these call options would expire worthless. The Risk that we run with this strategy is whether the
Stock Price will close above or below our lower strike price. If the Stock Price closes above the
higher strike price; then the bear call spread strategy suffers a maximum loss that is equal to the
difference in strike price between the two call options as well as subtracting the original credit
taken in when entering the put spread position.
Now, we have spoken about bear call spreads but not about bear puts. As with a bear call, a bear

The answer is that even though Bear Spreads profit from a drop in value of the underlying asset,
this makes their near future contracts depreciate faster than the long term ones. So Bear spreads,
both increases avenue in profit, even though you may not be hoping for large profits, but only
focusing on the short term profits; and bear spreads also lowers margin and risk. Unfortunately,
the disadvantages to using bear spreads, is that the more calls or puts, long or shorts, this adds up
to more commission to be paid and bear spreads do not make any explosive profit during any price

The Woman Warrior, By Maxine Hong Kingston
For centuries, people faced prejudice and struggle to live the American Dream . Thousands of
people come to the U.S. to live a better life for their family. Instead they face racial seclusion,
struggle to survive, and consequences of American s fear. In the memoir, The Woman Warrior, by
Maxine Hong Kingston, a girl who discloses stories about Chinese myths, families, and events in
the U.S. that has shaped her identity. In the historical fiction novel, When the Emperor was Divine,
by Julie Otsuka, is about a Japanese Americanfamily sent to an internmentcamp in Utah during
WWII written in children s lens. In both novels, silence is viewed as gender and ethnical oppression.
In Maxine s novel, silence is presented through encounter with other characters. For example,
she attempts to talk to a girl in her school, Kingston states, If you don t talk, you can t have a
personality. You think someone is going to take care of you all your stupid life? You re not the
type that gets dates, let alone gets married (180). Kingston uses symbolism as a form of
expression to indicate that she is forcing herself to speak instead of the girl she s talking to. She
is infuriated that she has a squeaky voice and is unable to fully pronounce sentences. She doesn t
want to be a minority among her peers and wants the ability to speak her mind which Chinese
culture deprived her. In a way she is talking about her own physical insecurities, how fragile she
feels, and what she is going through

Inorganic Chemicals Cause Water Pollution
Inorganic chemicals is one of most important causes to water pollutants. These inorganic pollutants
naturally found in environment but due to human develepment activities, these pollutant amount
has been increasing rapidly and released into water bodies. The most common inorganic pollutants
from water are ammonium, phosphorus, arsenic, cadmiun, zinc, lead etc. It is highly toxic to
human and environment (Choi et al., 2011). The inorganic pollutant such as ammonia and
phosphorus promote eutrophication, which excessive amounts of these inorganic pollutant
releasing into the water can accelerate this phenomena in a few years (Donald M et al., 2002).
The overgrowth of plants and subsequent death have been created green layer on the surface of
water bodies. These layer can be blocked the penetration of light and oxidation process into the
water bodies. Thus, depletion of dissolved oxygencan be occurred in the water and affected aquatic
life. The death and decay of aquatic life contribute unpleasant smells and increasing the turbidity of
water bodies (Conley et al., 2009). In additional, the heavy metal such as arsenic can causes skin,
lung, bladder, and kidney cancer as well as pigmentation changes, skin thickening (hyperkeratosis)
neurological disorders, muscular weakness, loss of appetite, and nausea (Mohan and Pittman,
2007). The long term exposure to cadmium causes various types of acute and chronic disorders like

South Saskatchewan River Basin Case Study
The South Saskatchewan River Basin will lose a large quantity of quality water. People flushing
feminine hygiene products down the toilet is a serious issue. For this reason, we have
developed a plan to better our watershed quality/quantity by educating the public as well as
taking action to assist people in getting into the habit of properly disposing products. We plan to
have 6 bins installed in our school by the school board, have the posters up and have sent out an
email with a digital version of the posters and our video to every school. We plan to accomplish
this within June 1st, 2016. We live in the South Saskatchewan River; it is 172 900 km2 and has
325 000 people. It has everything from Rocky Mountains to Prairies Grasslands and houses... Show

large amount of water because of pipes bursting, and these are just vague descriptions of what ll
happen. For future generations, we must fix this problem right away. With our solution, we
believe that we can move one big step closer to a perfect watershed; informing students as well as
installing more sanitary bins and posters will help them grow up knowing what (and what not) to
do to make sure we have a healthy watershed. With funding from Caring For Our Watersheds, we
can implement our plan and begin to take real action. Tomorrow is depending on

from one colony to other country. It focuses on the fruitful acts of the major powers, America and
England. Starting from history, that is the urge of forming an idea to the diversified nature of
industries; this report describes the various impacts of this act on the world in the 19th century. The
set up of industrialism could never be understood until the history is known, and so the report starts

Microbiota and the Immune System
In a complex environment that is shared by both commensals and host cells, mechanisms are
implemented to ensure tolerance to non self while maintaining homeostasis of the immune system.
Technological advances in the field of gnotobiotics has enabled researchers to study the intricacies
of the mutualistic interaction that has co evolved between the gut microbiota and host immune
system. These experimental techniques utilize a germ free specimen (GF) as models and the
inoculation of various microbial treatments in order to study the effects of commensals in the

Many residents of the microbiota have the ability to become opportunistic pathogens if there is a
breach into internal host territory. For this reason, there are two methods utilized by the host that
can be described as a confinement of microbes to intestinal regions and the stratifying of this
region to prevent direct contact to host cells as a means of protection. The presence of a layer of
intestinal epithelial cells coupled with the secretion of glycoproteins from goblet cells to produce a
mucus layer and antimicrobial proteins to disrupt cell membrane are components of the primary
barrier in defense. Additionally, stratification creates distinct layers within the intestinal region
through the production of IgA antibodies by B cells which can be placed on the apical side of
epithelial cells to further prevent entry by binding to bacteria in the lumen (Hooper 2012). An
additional mechanism of IgA consists of the decreasing of flagellin gene expression in bacteria in
order to reduce host inflammatory responses to cells comprised of flagellin. The secretion of IgA is
involved in various functions that regulate the healthy growth of resident commensals to maintain
both the diversity and interaction of the gut microbiota with the host

is the setting and symbolism during the sequence.
To begin analyzing the setting and symbolism it begins with Ben on an airplane going back to Los

symbolism in all in this short sequence. First of all as Ben is coming off the airport and onto the

  • 2. A Brief Biography of Vincent Van Gogh When most people think of Vincent van Gogh, they think of an artist with mental health issues who cut off his own ear. Some stop at that, but others then progress to think of his Starry Night painting. Van Gogh is well known for not becoming famous until after his death. In fact, he sold but one painting during his life, and that was mostly thanks to his brother, Theo. Today, his paintings are some of the most sought after and expensive works ever to be auctioned. However, though most modern art appreciators celebrate his paintings, his life, and are well informed about him, the rest of the world sits by and merely acknowledges him as a talented artist gone awry. It is not wrong to look at a painting and try to figure out what the artist was thinking when they made it, but it is a shame to not also try to understand what led them to that point. Why did they produce it in the first place? This is especially the case with Vincent van Gogh, whose whole life from birth to death must be examined. Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus successfully bore their first child on March 30, 1853. Both believed in having a large family and strived for normality and high social status, which proved to be problematic when little Vincent showed early signs of aloofness and strange habits. Though he was especially close with his brother, Theo, growing up, Vincent never really seeked company. For the most part, his childhood was fairly happy, full of routine Bible lessons from his ... The Cascades are part of the Ring of Fire, which is a ring of volcanoes and earthquake sites, around the borders of the Pacific Ocean. Mount Shasta can be seen for several hundred miles and has struck viewers with its remarkable beauty since it was first seen. It is amazing to look at the mountain on Ariel photographs, satellite maps, explore it on a 3D tour on Google Earth, or look back at the oldest maps that were drawn by the earliest explorers and surveyors. The first map was drawn in 1883 by cartographer and co founder of the National Geographic Society, Gilbert Thompson while working for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Thompson s map is a sketch rather than a topographic map, but it is the first fairly accurate representation of Mount Shasta. Thompson included the majority of the mountain s major features and the glaciers are named on his map (A Historic Mount Shasta Sketch). Mount Shasta is in Northern California near the Oregon border. We live 88 miles as the crow flies from the summit of Mount Shasta, and our home faces the East side of the mountain. The mountain is visible from our kitchen window, our living room, and deck. • 4. The Washington Family Analysis The Washington Family by Edward Savage, painted from 1789 1796, features American s original First Family. (Fig. 1) George Washington sits around a table in his Mount Vernon home with his wife, Martha and her two grandchildren, whom the Washingtons adopted following the death of their parents. Behind them, a household slave stands ready to serve and a vast landscape sprawls outside the window. Though the painting appears to be a simple, familyportrait, it actually contains deeper, political messages. Savage depicts George Washingtonin a domestic setting to showcase his personal life outside of the presidency; he is depicted with his family and in his private home. However, he is also shown in uniform, alluding to his role as general. He does not grasp his sword, but instead rests his hand on a stack of papers, representing his role as statesman. It was well known that Washington intended to step out of the public sphere following the war before being elected, and that he continued to long for a quiet life at home throughout his presidency. In this work, Savage depicts Washington filling roles of general, statesman and patriarch, making the statement that he can fulfil all three roles. Further, by depicting Washington as a father figure in his domestic setting, Savage invites his viewers to connect him with the founding of the nations and thus visually establish him as the Father of our country. Considering the popular print version of the work distributed around the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Essay on The Hour of the Star The Hour of the Star As Clarice Lispector was writing what would become her last literary creation, The Hour of the Star, little did she know that while her body was plagued with the devastations of cancer, her mental struggle for peace and grace in death would inspire her most renowned novel. Perhaps it is because of those circumstances, she created a novel with intuitive reflections on both life and death, as seen through the life of the main character, Macabea. The story is narrated by Rodrigo S.M., and although Rodrigo attempts to maintain a neutral stance, he is often conflicted by his own perceptions and feelings. At the book s commencement Rodrigo spends quite some time explaining that while the story is mainly about a woman, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However if we look at it in the figurative sense we begin to perceive the deeper meaning. Prior to this statement the narrator talks about how he cannot use big succulent terms, lest the reader become confused and not be able to understand what is being said. Without that understanding the reader would become perplexed and the essence of the novel would be lost. So stating it in this particular way, by symbolizing simple words as bread and more complex words as the gold, the narrator is explaining figuratively how the author plans to carry out the novel. Thus, by keeping things simple the author has a better chance of the reader grasping her intent and following the story line, causing the symbolic starvation to be avoided. This use of language figuratively keeps the reader on his/her toes. In the story culture plays a key role in shaping the lives of all the characters. The culture of the novel seems similar to present day, western world culture where women use there looks and sensual movements to attract and be adored by men. On the flip side the men show off there masculinity and use sweet words in an attempt to charm woman. • 7. The Legend Of King Arthur And Le Morte DArthur Has a book or movie given enjoyment through a hard time? Thomas Malory and Terry Gilliam have opposing writing styles as a result of the context they wrote their texts in. Thomas Malory, author of Le Morte d Arthur, writes his book as a compilation of tales and Terry Gilliam writes his version as a script for a movie. While both Gilliam and Malory use an episodic narrative, Gilliam writes his movie as a parody to mock old England and other versions of the Legend of King Arthur, and Malory uses his book as a story that includes immense details about a legend. While Le Morte d Arthur and Monty Python and the Holy Grailboth share a common plot, the works differ on intended purpose and tone. The audiences each author tries to appease changes each author s writing style; Thomas Malory is trying to appease a fifteenth century audience who is traumatized by numerous uprisings and despair due to a history of atrocious kings, while Terry Gilliamis trying to entertain a more modern audience that wants a humorous and satirical movie. The intended purpose of each of the authors, differ in that each are delivering their works to a situationally different audience. In the fifteenth century, when Le Morte d Arthur was written, people were just beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel after a history of tyrannical kings. • 12. The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning to... The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning on Organizational Performance Introduction Succession planning, which is often also referred to as knowledge management, is one of the ways in which information is kept within an organization even though the people who work within that organization come and go. Those who make policies in business, and those who make policies that assist other businesses, have started encouraging businesses in recent years to learn to help themselves through succession planning and the management and transfer of knowledge, specifically between people who are leaving the organization and people who are just entering that organization (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). One of the reasons for this encouragement is due to the fact that an adjustment of roles through the transferring of knowledge is an important way to help any business move through a change of ownership or simply a shift when a long time employee leaves the company. Ownership is often not the issue, but management and other developed skills are very significant when a person is trying to ensure that another person clearly understands the job which he is taking over and will be performing in the future (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). Many businesses do not have any serious plans as they relate to succession, and that can be detrimental to the entire organization. In Roxanne, Roxanne goes to C.D for help with getting Chris to like her. This is an obvious similarity between the two characters in both productions. Another similarity is the relationship between Christian and Cyrano. In Cyrano de Bergerac, Christian and Cyrano meet when Christian begins to insult Cyrano s nose. This leads to Cyrano realizing who Christian is and eventually accepting him. Their relationship develops when Cyrano reveals Roxane s feelings for him. Christian feels very dim witted when it comes to love so he calls on Cyrano for help. Similarly in Roxanne, Chris and C. D meet when Chris insults C. D s nose. • 19. Foodborne Illness Is A Big Problem Have you ever wondered how big of a problem foodborne illness is on the federal level in the United States? Foodborne illness is a big problem on the public health. Foodborne illnesses are infections caused by beverages or foods that contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites and/or chemicals. Foods can also be contaminated with bacteria during the food preparation you do at home or the preparation done at a restaurant. If the food cooks or food preparers do not carefully wash their hands, kitchen tools, cutting boards, and other kitchen surfaces that come into contact with raw foods, cross contamination can occur which is the spread of bacteria from contaminated foods to uncontaminated foods. If hot food is not kept hot enough or cold food is not kept cold enough, bacteria can multiply. Bacteria multiplies very quickly when the temperature of food is between 40 and 140 degrees. Cold food should be kept below 40 degrees and hot food should be kept above 140 degrees. Bacteria multiplies slower when food is refrigerated. Freezing food can also slow or even stop the spread of bacteria. But once food is brought to room temperature once again the bacteria that is refrigerated or frozen becomes active once again. Thoroughly cooking foods can also kill bacterias that cause foodborne illnesses. The common symptoms of foodborne illnesses are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and/or the chills. • 20. Vasopressin Case Study The oxidation of blood components by the oxygen released from erythrocytes may cause hypothalamic pituitary adrenal insufficiency [67]. Primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency occurs in patients with sepsis and is associated with a poor outcome [68 71]. Blood oxidation affects the hypothalamo pituitary thyroidal axis, inactivating thyrotropine , thyroidgland hormones (triiodothyronine(TT3), thyroxine (TT4) and their binding proteins. Thyroid hormoneregulates metabolism and has impact on sepsis prognosis. The level of TT4 is lower in patients with septic shock than in patients without septic shock [72 74]. De iodinations of iodothyronines play key roles in metabolic regulation [75, 76]. Vasopressin (Antidiuretic hormone) also is oxidized by the oxygen released from erythrocytes. Vasopressin plays a role in circulatory homeostasis and serum osmolality. Oxytocin and vasopressin are oxidized with formation of dityrosine [77]. These lines are stated in John Steinbeck s novel and are talking about how the men in their community or area admire kindness and honesty but love self interest, greed, meanness, or even egotism. This is just an example of how the people in the community are trustworthy and have kind or nice personalities. A personal interview with Michael Hemp on John Steinbeck s Cannery Row is a very special video that talks about the history of Cannery Row and also the community. While these categories continue to be widely used, research has suggested that sexual orientationdoes not always appear in such definable categories and instead occurs on a continuum (e.g., Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin, Gebhard, 1953; Klein, 1993; Klein, Sepekoff, Wolff, 1985; Shiveley DeCecco, 1977) These ranges of behaviors have brought out several controversies, mainly targeted at the LGBT... Social Injustice In If You Come Softly By Jacqueline Woodson Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for each other s welfare, social justice can never be attained. • 26. Essay On Counterculture In The 1960s One of the most exciting things about studying more recent history is almost intrinsically connected to the advent of the photographic camera, which offers spontaneous imagery of events in the moment that the artwork of the past could only attempt to recreate. The transition from black and white with a burst of color following the Second World War offered to the public eye a realistic representation of events that they had not had the opportunity to experience before. Color photographs boomed in the decades following the war, which provides historians today with a wide breadth of visual sources with which to corroborate other materials. This is especially true when examining the documentation of the counterculture in the 1960s. A book called Hippie compiled by Barry Miles offers a composite portrait of hippies in America in the 1960s, contextualized with other images from other key events outside of the realm of the... Similarly, the hippie counterculture eventually developed a strong anti war sentiment regarding the American intervention in Vietnam. However, the doctrine of love and pacifism resulted in the hippies never developing militant behaviors in the way that the members of SDS did. Statistics from Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) show that approximately 800,000 seniors fall each year and 1 in 3 of those will fall twice or one more time in a year. (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2012). Most falls are caused by a combination of risk factors. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling. Healthcare providers can help cut down a person s risk by reducing the fall risk factors (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Serious injuries have resulted from the falls such as hip fractures, concussions, decreased cognitive and functional abilities, and increased risk of death. The cost of treatment resulting from falls is rising each year. According to CDC, adjusted for inflation, the direct medical costs for fall injuries are $31 billion annually. With more lifeforms being created we would all require the same, if not more, nutrients. As a civilization now, we are currently running thin on basic needs such as food, water, and oil. Arguments Against Humanitarian Intervention Humanitarian intervention is a doctrine that advocates the opportunity to send humanitarian relief and international armed forces to help the victims of natural disasters or violations of human rights without the consent of the State concerned. The objective is to rescue, assist, assist and protect people in danger. This idea has appeared on the occasion of the Biafran War (1967 1970) which resulted in a terrible famine, but had been ignored by other States in the name of neutrality and non interference. The term humanitarian intervention was invented in the late 1980s by Bernard Kouchner, founder of Doctors Without Borders and politician, and Mario Bettati, Professor of Public International Law. Pharmaceutical companies are able to spend millions of dollars on marketing, and not only on the cheesy direct to consumer ads we see ending with ask your doctor . The drugs that these companies make are not a standard item on the market; one needs permission to obtain drugs. Pharmaceutical companies understand this, so they spend a majority of their marketing funds on advertising to health care providers. As previously stated, the actions on the industry do sway a doctor s prescriptions. Many problems arise from this, namely the fact of expense and health. According to the FDA, generic brand drugs can be 80% more expensive than their name brand counterpart. The FDA also mandates that each must be bioequivalent. The doctors prescription could cost 80% more because of the influence of drug companies. Another factor of this marketing is known as going off label , or drugs being pushed for symptoms they weren t made for. This is part of the reason opioids have caused the United States heroin outbreak. Drug companies designed extreme pain killers, meant for terminal illnesses. That isn t a large market, so companies began pushing doctors to prescribe them for more and more cases. This is also on the rise with antidepressants and anxiety medication. Pharmaceutical companies over advertising their drug is dangerous and has resulted in lawsuits for almost every major drug company. Famously, the English drug company GSK paid $3 billion in a lawsuit for over prescribing their antidepressant, Paxil (New York Times). Pfizer, Johnson Johnson, Abbott, and Eli Lilly have all paid at least $1 billion for pushing off label prescriptions. However, many people support this entire practice because of the free market, and that companies have the right to advertise. While the free market is an integral part of Western culture, drugs are not just some product. Prescription drugs are tablets of complex chemistry backed by scientific research and approved of personal use by someone who has been to higher education for nearly twelve years. Utopia In John Foster s Story The Machine Stops In Fosters story The Machine Stops he displays two points of view into the utopian society ruled by the machine, which prove Rothstein s Idea that one man s utopia is another man s dystopia. The first character in his story, Vashti, Is content with her life and would consider society close to a utopia. The second character, Kuno, Vashti s son, is not as pleased with his situation. The clashing opinions give the reader a lot to think about when considering Rothstein s idea. Vashti, the woman at the beginning of the story, lives out her days as many other people of this time do, sitting alone in an arm chair in the middle of their room. Everything is brought to her at a moment s notice, which makes moving from her spot a seemingly pointless thing to do. For her, everything is good enough . When she refers to the way the machine cannot display the emotions of another, while talking with her son, she disregards the imperfection saying that the idea this communication is an idea that was good enough for all practical purposes. Moral repercussions like this effect individuals and communities as a whole and can have serious and negative impacts when groups or individuals speak out and acknowledge the discrimination. • 45. The Science Of Team Building Team Synergy to Succeed Aristotle is credited with stating the whole is greater than the simple sum of its parts. This also represents the definition of synergy. Synergy is the unified working of the sum to create something greater than the individual components. For instance a car engine is comprised of an engine block, belts, hoses, spark plugs, and other miscellaneous components. Individually these components are not going to propel a vehicle however when put together and fed some fuel the components create the oomph needed to support transportation. In sports and business the cooperation and collaboration of people in organizations is no different. The people within these groups must be working in a unified manner toward a common set of goals and objectives. This common set of goals and objective provides the end point so that a teamof people have the necessary oomph, to achieve outcomes that would otherwise be unattainable by a single individual. The science of team building is an art. The uncontrollable variables are people. Just putting a group of talented individuals together for the sole purpose of goal achievement can be met with disastrous results. It can leave individuals left feeling unfulfilled and lead to costly mistakes in the long run. While team building can be considered an art, there are some methods and approaches that can assist with successful builds. The Medical Malpractice Liability System A tort action is brought about through provisions of private law and asserts that one party has experienced harm from the actions of another party and that the injured person seeks compensation for the harm (Pozgar Santucci, 2009). Tort reforms are connected to shifts in medical malpractice law since the 1980 s when moves were made to change from court decided Common Law to incorporation of statutes from many state legislatures (Waters, Budetti, Claxton, Lundy, 2007). This paper will discuss the current state of tort law, the need for reform, and proposals for effective reform. This potential for legal action by patients incentivizes physicians to purchase malpractice insurance as a protection against the devastation of attempting to pay such extreme amounts out of pocket; and whether due to the high cost of claims, the opportunity to profit or other forces, malpractice insurance premiums continue to climb similar to premiums for most other insurance types (Rakoczy, 2013). Proponents of reform also point to a tendency of physicians to protect against legal fault finding through over or under utilization of diagnostics and procedures, known as defensive medicine. For example, although empirical evidence has long supported avoidance of cesarean deliveries at 39 weeks in the absence of certain medical indications and demonstrated no better outcomes than vaginal deliveries, a high rate of cesarean deliveries continues in the United States, which allows the physician to demonstrate they have done all they can to assure a healthy delivery and position for defense against malpractice (Braunstein, 2012). Complicated by a healthcare system that financially rewards physicians for providing more services, approximately thirty percent of diagnostics, procedures, and hospitalizations are unnecessary, do not improve the patient s condition and may, in fact, cause harm (Braunstein, 2012). The focus of this paper is sleep deprivation. Concepts necessary to understanding sleep and sleep deprivation are sleep control mechanisms, stages of sleep, and the different types of sleep deprivation. There are two biological mechanisms in the body that regulate sleep. Both processes interact and balance one another, and together are known as the two process model of sleep wake regulation. These two sleep controlling mechanisms consist of: circadian rhythm, which is also referred to as process C, and sleep wake homeostasis, called process S. Circadian rhythm is the regulation of the internal processes and levels of alertness in the body controlled by the hypothalamus. The two parts to circadian rhythm include the circadian drive for arousal, and the circadian alerting system. The circadian drive for arousal is the tendency towards wakefulness, and arousal and alertness generated by alerting pulses of the circadian alerting system. The circadian alerting system is an alerting pulse sent out by the suprachiasmatic nucleus throughout the day, which counteracts increasing homeostatic sleep pressure and creates the circadian drive for arousal. Bear Spread Case That is : Maximum Return = Net Premium Commissions Paid, Where Price of Underlying Security Strike Price of the Long Call Maximum loss = Difference between strike prices of calls Net Premium or Credit Received + Commissions paid Now we notice that the maximum gain that we can attain using this bear call strategy is practically the credit received upon entering the trade. Therefore, to have maximum profit, the stock price needs to close below the lower strike price of the two calls and sold at expiration date where both these call options would expire worthless. The Risk that we run with this strategy is whether the Stock Price will close above or below our lower strike price. If the Stock Price closes above the higher strike price; then the bear call spread strategy suffers a maximum loss that is equal to the difference in strike price between the two call options as well as subtracting the original credit taken in when entering the put spread position. These inorganic pollutants naturally found in environment but due to human develepment activities, these pollutant amount has been increasing rapidly and released into water bodies. The most common inorganic pollutants from water are ammonium, phosphorus, arsenic, cadmiun, zinc, lead etc. It is highly toxic to human and environment (Choi et al., 2011). The inorganic pollutant such as ammonia and phosphorus promote eutrophication, which excessive amounts of these inorganic pollutant releasing into the water can accelerate this phenomena in a few years (Donald M et al., 2002). Many residents of the microbiota have the ability to become opportunistic pathogens if there is a breach into internal host territory. For this reason, there are two methods utilized by the host that can be described as a confinement of microbes to intestinal regions and the stratifying of this region to prevent direct contact to host cells as a means of protection. The presence of a layer of intestinal epithelial cells coupled with the secretion of glycoproteins from goblet cells to produce a mucus layer and antimicrobial proteins to disrupt cell membrane are components of the primary barrier in defense. Additionally, stratification creates distinct layers within the intestinal region through the production of IgA antibodies by B cells which can be placed on the apical side of epithelial cells to further prevent entry by binding to bacteria in the lumen (Hooper 2012). An additional mechanism of IgA consists of the decreasing of flagellin gene expression in bacteria in order to reduce host inflammatory responses to cells comprised of flagellin.
