This is a print project, so mainly visual aspects like graphic design and editing
Rationale:
Throughout the last few years I’ve been at college I’ve focused on the more visual aspects of my
work. I appreciate style and order, and I like going outside of my comfort zone and experimenting
with various styles. I’d say I’ve grown the most working with pixel-art, which was a skill I never
used to be able to do and now practice regularly. I’ve also gotten significantly better at editing from
when I first started, even though I personally think there’s still a lot I can learn. Of course, I’ve been
writing for mot of my life, but having to do so with certain limitations to meet criteria has been a
task I’ve continuously struggled with. I have improved a lot at it, but I still prefer a more freestyle
way of writing. I’m hoping to use my visual skills and editing skills to create an aesthetically
pleasing work that matches the setting of the book.
Project Concept:
The concept for my project is a single narrator explaining how to summon demons to the audience
in a comedic way.
I think the good way to present this would be as a fanzine or a pamphlet about 6 pages long. It’ll
be split up into certain sections, along with a front cover, back cover, introduction and contents
page. I’m aiming it towards teenagers my age, so the majority will be very modern humour with a
few pop culture references and acknowledgements to popular trends. I’m not sure what it’ll look
like aesthetically, I want it to be kind of a cross between dark colours and lighting to the classic
white and yellow blocky style of a informational book. Everything will be written out and most likely
stylised to suit this.
I mainly want to focus on getting the comedic feel right, so I’ll be focusing on other TV shows,
movies and books that have leaned in this direction. I may focus on a few specific people well
known for this as well as some comedians, and I’ll research fanzines for general layout
commonalities. As well as that, I’ll look into different cryptids and internet humour (mainly memes)
to find out what people my age appreciate. I’m hoping that branching out and researching from
several different sources will help me make the best project I can.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I’ll publish my work online and reach out to my online contacts for feedbacks, as well as asking
other teenagers for their feedback. I may conduct a questionnaire for feedback as well.
For self-reflecting, I’m going to keep a note on what changes I make and whether they positively or
negatively effect my work. At the end I can sum up the progress I’ve made as well as evaluating
my work as a whole.
By doing this, I’ll hopefully find a good process for finding feedback and criticism so I can keep
improving during college and for personal projects. Being able to see what caused problems
means I can work around those issues in my next project too, and I’ll overall be able to see what
areas I need to improve in so I can work on those further ad expand my skills.
