Lesson 1: Introduction
Yesterday was my first ever Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson! I can tell it s
going to be my favourite subject, well, maybe joint favourite along with Charms.
We met our Professor, Melanie Silvers, who seems absolutely lovely. I ve heard
stories about how lots of professors in the past, before the Second Wizarding War,
ended up having to leave after only one year, so I hope that doesn t happen to
Professor Silvers. We received our syllabus, which looks so exciting! So many

We learned two incantations yesterday; the WandLighting Charm and the Wand

After another few attempts, the light was significantly more yellow in colour, and I
felt very pleased with this outcome.
The Wand Extinguishing Charm, Nox, is a lot easier to use. At first, it took me a
few attempts to get it right, but I can successfully use it each time I require the
effects of Lumos to be removed. It feels really exciting to be using a spell that simple
requires a flick of the wrist and a short word!
Lesson 2: Bright Lights and a Little Softener
A few days ago we learned about Verdimillious and Spongify. I have since had the
chance to try out both of them!
On Monday evening, I was running through the grounds to get back into the Castle
before dark, when I tripped on a tree root and fell over. I think I was unconscious
for some time and when I awoke it was quite dark. I tried to move, but I had broken
my ankle. I needed to find a way of alerting someone to where I was. My muggle
grandfather had taught me Morse code when I was younger, so I thought I might be
able to use it with Lumos to attract attention. My head hurt and I wasn t able to
concentrate properly, so after saying Lumos! I could only see a faint white light that
wouldn t really attract any attention at all. I realise now that I had forgotten to think

In the book, The Scarlet Pimpernel, the de Tournay family narrates their escape from
France. This event is shown in the movie, but not very convincingly since most of the
acting is poor. Perhaps the director wanted to add more action to the beginning since
he took away much of the drama and excitement in the ending. The book is better
because of more notable characters, more variety of settings, more romantic gestures,
and overall, a more interesting storyline.
Mr. Jellyband, Sally, and the Fisherman s Rest, the restaurant where spies meet, are

Both the movie and the book have the same burned paper scene and Percy s sleeping
scene, but the book version relates the Scarlet Pimpernel leaving a note for
Chauvelin. Marguerite tells Percy that her brother, Armand, is in danger. In the
movie the reason for Marguerite sending the Marquis de St. Cyr to the guillotine is
that the Marquis s son asked Marguerite to marry him. She was arrested while the
Marquis had Armand beaten for loving the Marquis s daughter in the book version.
Percy practically reveals to his wife that he is the Scarlet Pimpernel after she tells
him that she has betrayed the Scarlet Pimpernel. Marguerite determines that Percy
is the pimpernel from a signatory ring in a painting instead of a gold ring in his
office. This can be attributed to a movie director s choice. Marguerite is captured
in a cabin instead of tackled and held down by a soldier. This could be for the
safety of the actress. Sir Percy tricks and captures Chauvelin but since Chauvelin has
Marguerite, Percy surrenders in exchange for her freedom. The Scarlet Pimpernel s
agents dress as soldiers and save Sir Percy. The couple then leaves for England.
The book is better because there are more characters, more romantic gestures, more
settings, and an even more interesting storyline than the movie version. Sir Percy s
genius is not as obvious, and neither is Marguerite s wit. The

He merely parrots back things that he has heard others say as he thinks this is
normal and he has no way to know otherwise. One particularly poignant example is
Heil Hitler, he said, which, he presumed, was another way of saying, Well, goodbye
for now, have a pleasant afternoon. p.54. This made me as a reader wonder wether I
would be blind to the harsh reality if I had been raised in that way. I think that this is
one of the most important things Boyne wants this novel to make us think about.
In parts of the novel Bruno begins to actually lose his innocence and learn and
understand more about the world around him. For example, when he is talking to
Maria about his father and she starts to speak to him about her earlier life he
realized for the first time that he had never fully considered her to be a person with
a life and a history of her own, p.60. This process is not fast enough as this
innocence still leads to his early death in a gas chamber. However, he thinks that he
is just going on a march while he was trying to help his friend, and this means that
he is not afraid. His innocence acts like courage, and shields him from fear while
placing him in danger.
There are also symbols and comparisons made in the novel. Mostly these are during

Hospital and clinic are two types of health care system that are undeniably different
from each other. However, both institutes, differ due to the differences in their nature.
Clinic is health center consulting private room beginning with a physician. A hospital
is place where the sick and injured are taken for treatment. The doctors and nurses are
readily available there for attending on their patients. They are employed by the
hospitals to nurse the sick back to health.
Both hospital and clinical have big differences between each, some examples include:
Size clinicals are smaller than hospitals and hospitals are larger than clinicals and,
Staffs clinicals are always runned by few practitioners and hospital has many doctors,

protagonist, Edna Pontellier, was forced into this dreadful lifestyle. Throughout the
book, she is exposed to new things, which causes her rebirth into an independent

particular groups of people is something society just can t stop doing. Categorizing
brings comfort in a world that can often be very brutal and chaotic. Most people s

guess what kind of person they are based on how they look, to get a better
understanding of their social status. This idea is reflected within the arts as well,

this relevance is often reiterated through forms of political propaganda that make

challenging short story to read. Michael Meyer, author of the college text The
Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature, states that the author of How to Tell a
True War Story, Tim O Brien, was drafted into the Vietnam War and received a
Purple Heart (472). His experiences from the Vietnam War have stayed with him, and

According to SparkNotes, O Brien s message is that the technical facts surrounding
any individual event are less important than the overarching, subjective truth of
what the war meant to soldiers and how it changed them (1). Lastly, O Brien uses

Not many people would dare to stand up for what is considered right anymore. In
Updike s A P, Sammy stands up for three girls and quits his job. It all takes place in
a town just north of Boston during the 1960 s in a grocery store called A P where
Sammy works. One day three girls walk in with just swimsuits on, which is
forbidden, and he just drools over them like the immature boy he is. By the time
the girls are ready to check out the manager, Lengel, comes to tell them that their
shoulders must be covered. Sammy does not like the way Lengel speaks to them so
he quits his job but by the time he goes outside to meet the girls they were already
gone. Sammy s compulsion to quit his job is caused by the girls and his ... Show more
At that precise moment he realized what a terrible mistake he had just made and all
for nothing because the girls had already left. He quit his job all because of some
girls. Sammy did not think things through and now has to face the consequences of
not having a job. All that is left to do after such a mistake is to learn from that
experience and not let it happen in the future.
The theme of A P is about maturity, acting without thinking and standing up for
others. Sammy displayed a great amount of immaturity while the three girls were
inside the store picking up the Herring snacks for the grandmother. When he first
spotted the girls he could not stop looking at them and accidently scanned a
customer s item twice; the customer was infuriated. He described the girls in great
detail and gave them nicknames based on how they looked which is a little immature
for a 19 year old. If Sammy had thought about his job as he did about those girls he
would have kept his job. The fact that he quit his job just because of some girls
proves that he is immature. But he deserves some respect because he stood up for the
girls when the manager embarrassed and criticized them. This is just something that
Sammy had to experience in order to become more mature and learn from his
mistakes.

Over the past few years, there have been multiple cases involving what some claim
to be police brutality. The past couple of years have had incidents reminiscent of
the sixties. Racial tensions have risen and numerous ongoing riots have broken out.
There has been fires and lootings and such due to these riots. The question is, is
America going back in time? In December of 2014, a monthly magazine called The
Progressive republished an article written by James Baldwin addressed to his
nephew. This article had been written in 1962 during the civil rights movement. The
words, the message, James Baldwin conveys in it apply just as much to America
today as it did then. Concluding that America is repeating itself, especially when
regarding the relationship between the police and people of color.

brutality and riots were common occurrences. By going back in time, one can see the

Gender and Dress Code High school dress codes are rules for clothing that is
deemed either appropriate or inappropriate to wear to school. Standard codes in
public schools, that don t have uniforms, typically require students to have sleeved
garments and leg wear that is a certain length. At some schools, the term leg wear
doesn t include leggings, while other schools permit leggings as long as your shirt or
other clothing reaches the length that shorts are required to meet. After attending five
public schools, three of which during my high school career, I can verify that these
were typically the enforced rules. All schools also had rules against hats and
certain headgear, though exceptions would sometimes be made, such as in the case
of spirit week. My most recent school has, for the most part, been very relaxed
about dress codes. Most of the rules are simply to maintain a piece of decency
among the students. The code basically calls for undergarments to remain
concealed, provocative skin can t be shown, shirts must have sleeves, and leg wear
must be longer than your fingertips with your hands at your sides. However, there
are some inconsistencies with dress codes that I have noticed and can t seem to
understand. There seems to be lenience for boys when it comes to the enforcement
