Skeletal Muscle Icad
In this study, we have developed an ICAD scheme to automatically segment and compute the
Psoas muscle at the level L3 of the vertebral spine as well as computing and demonstrating
different tissues in the skeletal muscle which are very crucial for clinical researchers to make a
good analysis. In order to process the ICAD scheme, different stages should be followed such as
finding the CT slice which contains the level of L3, determining the region of interest, segmenting
the musclewith the use of region growing algorithm, and computing and determining different
tissuesin the skeletal muscle by applying a different threshold. Various stages of this ICAD scheme
are described in the following sections:

Figure 3 a, which can be any point inside of the TPA sections. The scheme then automatically

ICAD to modify the automated segmented region. In this example, we used the limit button to
correct the automated segmentation as shown in Figure 3 c. Afterward, as shown in figure 3 d, we
applied a color map on the skeleton muscle to demonstrate the muscle attenuation. In this example,
the whole muscle size is 2998.91гЂ–mmгЂ—^2 composed of 49.21% normal muscle, 9.8%

How Does Emily BrontГ« Demonstrate The Balance Of Women s...
Britain s society had an unbalance of power during the late eighteenth century amongst genders.
The roles of men and women were distinct, however the women had far less say and input. In the
novel Wuthering Heights, Emily BrontГ« displays the revolutionary change amongst women
beginning in the late 1860s. The barrier of not having a voice as well as restricted freedom had
finally been broken down. The roles of women have progressed drastically from the stay home
mother, to marriage rights, to finally the rebellious actions of women wanting to achieve their
individualism. In the beginning stages of reforming women s roles, they were only stay home
mothers. Women were the domestic interiors of the house, maintaining the inside and everything...

Catherine, and marrying Edgar will give Catherine the opportunity to escape from a disorderly,

financial stability requires being a lady, which erases the rebel she once was. It was not unusual

Justice Is The Legal Or Philosophical Theory Of Justice
Justice is the art which gives to each man what is good for his soul. Discuss.
Justice is the art which gives to each man what is good for his soul and that is simply to say that
justice is identical with, or inseparable with philosophy. (Cahn, Political Philosophy, 1 136) Justice
is an order and duty of the parts of the soul; it is to the soul as medicine preserves the health of the
body. In its current and cardinal definition is a just behavior or treatment; a concern for justice,
peace, and genuine respect for people. (Oxford Dictionary, Justice ) Justice is the legal or
philosophical theory by which fairness is administered. However, justice is polymorphic;
depending on eras and civilizations also differing in every culture. Although there some principles
of justice that can be found to be almost universal. An early theory of justice was set out by the
Ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his work The Republic. Plato was highly dissatisfied with the
prevailing degenerating conditions in Athens. The Athenian democracy was on the verge of ruin
and was ultimately responsible for Socrates death his mentor. Plato saw in justice the only remedy
of saving Athens from decay and ruin. Evidently, factors such as amateurishness, political
selfishness and excessive individualism became main targets of Plato s attack which were rampant
in the Greek world. Agitated in contemporary affairs, the attack came in the form of the
construction of an ideal society in which justice

To Sleep is to Dream
I have often had dreams that were so real and vivid, that I was unable to tell if they truly
happened or occurred in my dreams. Sleeping is very important to everyone. Without proper
sleep, the body s immune system can begin to fail, and then one will become more susceptible to
virus, illnesses, and disease. Even when we are asleep, the human mind does not completely
sleep. When we are asleep, we tend to tune out environmental sounds that occur when we sleep.
For example, I live near a freeway, yet the sounds of it never wake me. The auditory cortex in our
brains respond to stimuli even when we are asleep. For example, I can always wake up when
one of my children calls my name while I am in a deep slumber. There have been many studies
and observations on individuals while they are asleep. These studies are done on individuals
who have sleep disorders. There are four phases of sleep, and when one does not get the proper
sleep, physical and mental issues will occur. Our bodies work in tides, and our minds and bodies
fluctuate. When our bodies seem to synchronize with the 24 hour day, it is referred to as the
circadian rhythm. It is the biological clock that tells us when it is day time we are awake, and
night time is when we are supposed to sleep. Age and experience can affect the circadian rhythm,
and I see this in myself. For instance, when I was in my teens and twenty s, I had no problem
staying up all night, whether it was working a graveyard shift, or

Legalizing Drugs In The United States
Drugs should be legalized and/or decriminalized in the future in Washington State and the Unit
ed States. However, along with legalization should come counseling for drug abuse and should
give the pros and cons to using drugs. Since smoking was legalized and more information has
come out about smoking there is 50% less smokers and it is less of a public issue. And as far as
the concern with there being more people using drugs and driving a car, yes we will have
drivers using just as we have drivers drinking and driving. Also with legalization will come more
control for the purity of drugs and users will be less like to become dependent because of this. One
other issue is that more money needs to be spend on rehabilitation. Incarceration is... Show more

The success can mirror some of the success to the tobacco industry without putting anyone in
prison. Harm Reduction and Drug Policy Alliance are just some of the groups working toward
changing the views and laws regarding drugs and drug addiction. One issue harm reduction works
with is drug treat ment. The government is given substantially more money each year to drug law
enforcement issues than treatment. In a seminal cost benefit analysis done in the early 1990s, the
RAND Corporation compared the programmatic productivity and the costs of enforcing the war on
drugs in terms of arresting and in carcerating dealers and their agents, versus treatment. RAND s
research found that a dollar spent on drug treatment saves society seven and a half dollars in
reduced crime and regained productivity. A good treatment facility will not only rehabilitate the
patient from doing drugs but will also give them tools to go back into society and have a job and
be a good citizen not committing crime. Also putting a drug abuser in treatment opposed to
incarceration will give them a better chance at getting a job because they will not have a criminal
record. Treatment is more successful to rehabilitate the drug abuser than any effort being made by
law enforcement. Harm reduction helps to push the

The Cult Of Womanhood
The cult of true womanhood also known as the cult of domesticity began to emerge in the 19th
century. As more men began to take over jobs and were able to provide for their families, the cult
of domesticity slowly emerged. The cult was an ideology of women that they were to be
housewives and mothers and were to follow the four cardinal virtues. The Four cardinal virtues
were, piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. Many of the women
that possessed these
virtues and that were in the cult, were considered to be middle and upper class. Women were to
follow these virtues vigorously or would be punished. The ideas that became prominent in the cult
of domesticity, affected many women physically and emotionally and eventually lead to women s...

it as a up lifting task. They were to make the home a refuge from work for the husband. The
women would never disobey the man and would always be submissive. This virtue was important,

The Importance Of Self Portraits
Throughout the twentieth century numerous standards were pressured onto women. Whether they
be physical standards, such as feminine features and modesty, or standards in relation to their
actions, such as the need for women to be mothers and have men in their lives and to keep their
sexualtiy hidden from the world. There were many female artists who protested against these
boundaries women were put into by society through self portraits. However, these forms of protest
expressed through art were not always accepted or praised as well as they are in modern times.
There were many women who took a stand within their art against standards placed on women. In
the 20th century, self portraits were heavily used as a form of protest by female artists in order to
reject societal standards placed on women. Paula Modersohn Becker was a female artist whose
self portraits opened up a new path of self expression of European female self portraitures within
the 20th century. For years, nude portraits were created primarily for male gaze; female models
were purchased by male artists and were painted as sex objects. Paula Modersohn Becker rebels
against this sexist norm by simply being her own muse. Modersohn Becker s use of the female
nude was a powerful reclaiming of her own body. A new trail was blazed in 1906, with her
painting Self Portrait, Age 30, 6th Wedding Day. In the painting, for the first time, the partially nude
model is the artist herself. She stands there, looking at the

In defending his point against those that deny that the gospel written by inspiration of God, Berkhof
flagrantly proclaims, Over against this position we hold that the Gospels were written by men who
were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that they are therefore absolutely trustworthy and authoritative
accounts of the life of our Lord. To defend his position Berkhof list but a few passages from
scriptures that support his position. As for those that admit the inspiration of the Old Testament
Prophets, but deny that the Apostles were inspired because they did not use the expression Thus
Saith the Lord or did not observe the characteristic phenomena that accompanied the inspiration of
the prophets, Berkhof gives three points in distinguishing the inspiration of the prophets from the
inspiration of the Apostles. o In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit took possession of the Prophets
sometime suppressing their personality, while in the New Testament the Holy Spirit aboded in the
Church and first the Apostle using them as instruments to produce His revelation. o For the Old
Testament Prophets the Holy Spirit was an external Power that impelled them to prophesy. While

The European Witch Hunts In The Inquisition And The Hammer...
Out in Europe, there are some witch hunts going on. These hunts are known as The European
Witch Hunts. This all started back in the 13th century, when two men, Jakob Sprenger and Heinrich
Kramer wrote a book that was called Malleus Maleficarum, that is, The Hammer of Witches. This
book caused the worries of witchcraftand got witch hunts started. In the article The Inquisition
and The Hammer of Witches the text says Both Catholics and Protestants accepted it as the
authority on witchcraft. The work contained imaginative stories about witches based on
folklore, presented theological and legal arguments against witchcraft, and provided guidelines
on how to identify and eliminate witches. The Hammer of Witches has been described as the
most vicious and . . . the most damaging book in all of world literature. (The European Witch
Hunts) This book caused huge witch hunts to break out in Europe. To identify people that were
accused of being a witch the article says Some suspects were bound and put into a blessed body
of cold water. If they sank, they were deemed innocent and pulled out. If they floated, they were
considered witches and executed on the spot or handed over to be tried. Other suspects were
weighed because it was thought that witches had little or no weight. they also would check
suspects for a devils marking If the markings didn t hurt or bleed when they were pricked, they
were considered marks from satan. These were just a couple ways that people

The Pros And Cons Of Cognitive Linguistics
Cognitive Linguistics is a new approach to the study of language which views linguistic knowledge
as part of general cognition and thinking. It emerged through the work of George Lakoff and
Ronald Langacker and considers that linguistic behavior is not separated from other general
cognitive abilities which allow mental processes of reasoning or memory but understood as an
integral part of it. According to Lakoff and Johnson, there is a conceptual potential that enables the
transferring of the knowledge and experience human beings have of the things and events that they
know well, to those other objects and events with which they may not be so familiar with, and even
to abstract concepts. (Johnson)One of the main theoretical principles of cognitive... Show more

There are certain approaches that focus on the text, like the formalist and structuralist ones, others
focus on the writer like the biographical or psychological ones. Each of these approaches has their
own positive and negative aspects. A cognitive linguistic approach to literature reconciles both the
above mentioned theories and takes into consideration a third aspect: the reader. Literary experience
becomes thus the result of the conceptualization of all the conceptual aspects of human experience
and behavior. A cognitive approach to literature rests on three key principles from cognitive science:
the notion that meaning is embodied, the notion that categorization is a feature of prototype effects,
so that categories are also socio culturally grounded in embodiment, and the notion that language
and its manifestations in interpretation is a natural human trait. (Stockwell) Recent work in
cognitive linguistics explores the analogical processes by which the human brain makes sense of its
world. So the way authors think is the way we think. Claiborne Rice states that textual production
and reception necessarily rely on identical, or even similar, integration networks (Rice) Joseph
Grady asserts that speakers and hearers share the same cognitive network structures. (Grady)
According to Fauconnier and Turner, the same structures are at work in both production and
reception. (Fauconnier) Under these views we understand that the human mind thinks analogically.
The components of analogy include cognitive mapping skills that create levels of identification
between across different domains and mental spaces. In order to understand what literary critics do
when analyzing a literary text, we need to identify the kinds of cognitive mappings they

War During The Twentieth Century War Poetry Essay
Throughout the twentieth century, many poets have written about war. They have protested
against it, created propaganda in support, celebrated conflict, and questioned it. War in general
tends to evoke emotion in everyone, whether it is pride in a country, grief of losing a loved one,
fear of the unknown, or even happiness because of a victory. On page one of Philippa Lyon s
Twentieth Century War Poetry, she writes, ...much poetry has been written by individuals (both
male and female) who were not necessarily in the thick of battle. She is saying that a lot of them
poems were written by individuals with a different point of view of the war than the soldiers. Not
all of war poetry was written by soldier poets, who offer a first hand account of what it was like and
their experiences. Lyons then continues and writes, ...the poetry poses direct questions about
motivation, intent and fairness; that is to say, about the nature, morality and politics of war. The
individuals had many questions about the war and they present those questions through poetry. It is
not always seen as an individual s hardship and struggles turned into art. Amy Lowells September
1918 and Carl Sandburg s Grass both describe a common theme of war, which evokes a spectrum
of emotions. Lowell s use of imagery and diction in her poem evokes a plethora of emotions. As
an Imagist, she used a lot of imagery in her poems. The book American Literature in Funk Wagnalls

Groupthink In Rwanda
The 2004 film, Hotel Rwanda, directed by Terry George, highlights the brutality of the Rwandan
Genocide between the Hutu and the Tutsi peoples. The results of the conflict were the death of
almost one million Rwandan citizens, mostly Tutsi. Initially, the conflict arose when Belgium
internationals came into Rwandaand gave power to the Tutsi, who were lighter skinned and taller,
which led to extremist Hutugroups to arise in response to this unfairness. Ultimately, this uprising
and forming of the two distinct groups was heavily influenced by propaganda, political corruption,
and groupthink, and all of which essentially resulted in the huge tragedy. Conflict Theory is directly
tied to what occurred during the Rwanda Genocide, where ideologies... Show more content on

The concept of groupthink comes from Irving Janis who discusses how small groups tend to be
vulnerable to a dangerous psychological process (Barash 2014, 31). This group mentality allows
for desensitization as well as a thirst for power. During the film, Paul Rusesabagina interacts
multiple times with Georges Rutaganda who leads Interahamwe, a cruel local Hutu militia. Often
he is seen trying to influence Paul into agreeing with his ideals either with threats or solicitations.
There is a parade for Hutu Power during the film, where George is seen dancing along others
whom are all brandishing weapons. This scene is significant because it shows how blissful events
such as parades can influence individuals to celebrate a cause that is questionable. Additionally, one
important symptom of groupthink is the illusion of being invulnerable to the main dangers that
might arise from a risky action in which the group is strongly tempted to engage (Barash 2014, 35).
It seemed as though throughout the film the members of the militia felt invincible and did not
believe action would be taken against them, as was often the case. Thus, with this image of
complete power in their minds, they felt no guilt with their actions, especially in a group

Understanding White Collar Crime
In the United States, there are many different types of crimes that are committed. One type of
crime that is considered non violent would be white collar crime. Under white collared crimes
there are hundreds of different types of crimes that would fall under this category. Sociologist and
criminologists have come up with many different theories to what white collar crime is and what
type of people commit these crimes. In the next few paragraphs I will explain what white collar
crime is and my opinion on how white collar crime should be dealt with.

He also said that white collar criminals had more of a negative impact on U.S. society than street
criminals (Schmalleger).
In the recent years, with more state and federal laws against these white collar crimes, it has
become more difficult to get away with such crimes. There are more agencies out there today that
help prevent and help catch these white collar criminals before they hurt many individuals and
investors. Agencies like the FBI, the National Check Fraud Center and the National White Collar
Crime Center which teaches small to large businesses how to prevent and know how to spot a
white collar crime within their company. Even though there are many protections out there today, it
is still a hard crime to prevent. Most local law enforcement officers don t see these types of white
collar crimes happen due to the criminals committing the crimes are in a private setting when
committing these types of crimes (Schmalleger). Usually, the individuals committing white collar
crimes are trusted employees within a business and the crime isn t caught till after the offense has
been made.
In conclusion, white collar crime has become more of a common thing within businesses today
than ever before. Or, it may becoming more noticeable as more prevention is put into place to
catch these white collar crimes. I do believe most of the white collar crime committed is due to
greed. I also

Love vs. Lust in Andrew Marvell s Poem, To His Coy...
I know that there is a unique difference between love and lust. In the Andrew Marvell poem To
His Coy Mistress, I would argue over the issue of love versus lust. In this poem, we are introduced
to a man who is infatuated with a young woman and wants to become intimate with her. He tries to
pursue this young woman, but the woman is playfully hesitant. The man is trying to explain to the
young woman if she keeps being resistant to him, they would never get a chance become intimate.
Could it be that the man really does have true lovefor the young woman? Or is that he is just lusting
for her gentle touch?
In the first stanza of this poem, the man begins by expressing his feelings for the young woman. He
starts off by trying to flatter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As we start the second part of the poem, the man begins to discuss the amount of time the
woman and he both have left on this earth. The man states in first couple of lines, But at my back
I always hear time s winged chariot hurrying near. The man is trying to tell the woman that they
should not wait to embrace each other physically because no one is here on this earth forever.
The man describes to the woman that all they will have left in the end is the grave. In the final
part of the stanza, the man says The grave s a fine and private place, but none I think do there
embrace. The man is trying to explain to the young woman that though the grave is a fairly
private place, they will not be able to make love because they are no longer here on this earth. He
also states that in the end he will no longer have the feelings he has for her now because his time
here on earth will be done for. At this particular part of the poem, I would say that the man is using
anything in his power to convince the young woman to sleep with him. The man seems very lustful
at this point, so the love that the man somewhat conveyed for the young woman at the beginning of
the poem has slowly drifted away.
In the final section of the poem, the man goes from loving the woman forever, to saying that there
is no time left here on this earth and that they should make love as soon

SAE 30 Motor Oil
One form of resistance to flow is due to the viscosity of the liquid. Viscosity is the amount of
work needed to move one box of liquid against another box of liquid. Every liquid has it s own
value for this resistance to flow. SAE 30 motor oil has a lower viscosity and flows much easier
than SAE 50 motor oil. The values for water are lower than for the motor oil. Another
characteristic of any liquid is its attraction to a surface. It attaches itself to any surface and cannot
be moved. The liquid in the box on the very surface of a pipe does not flow or move. It always
remains stationary. The liquid in the box above it has to slide against it and that requires an amount
of energy to overcome friction between the two boxes . The higher

We have been blessed with five senses that we are expected to survive with. But as technologies

Our perception of our world has been shaped by centuries worth of studies, and recently with the

What we don t see as quickly are its many limitations. The relative size of the land masses is
distorted. Greenland and Africa seem to be about the same size, but actually Africa is fourteen
times bigger. Europe s size is exaggerated, and placed in the center of the map, which is also untrue.
But most importantly it is based on the convention that the Northern hemisphere is at the top of the
world, and the Southern hemisphere is at the bottom . Such an assumption is made mainly out of
habit, but it is also a topic of contradictory ideas.
It is inaccurate to assume that the Northern hemisphere should be on top, for depending on which
angle one looks at the Earth, the Southern hemisphere is on top. This is illustrated by another type
of map projection, known as the Hobo Dyer projection. Although the shapes of the continents are

Is Hamlet Grieving For His Father s Death In Hamlet Analysis
When analyzing Hamlet under a psychological lens, one can speculate on why exactly Hamlet is
so fixated on the death of his father. Is the cause a heartfelt relationship between Hamlet and King
Hamlet? Or is Hamlet displacing the real motive for his grief? It is possible that Hamlet is not
grieving for his father s death after all, but subconsciously grieving for something else. Due to the
death of King Hamlet, Hamlet would have inherited the kingdom if it wasn t for the existence of
Claudius, who took over the throne instead. Perhaps Hamlet is grieving the loss of this position to
his uncle. The context of the Oedipal complex can be applied to this scenario, as Hamlet would be
taking the position of Gertrudes husband, which according to Freud, satisfies the subconscious
desire universally present in all humans of wanting to have sex with the parent of the opposite
gender. Since this idea is unacceptable and dangerous to Hamlet, he subconsciously transfers his
mourning for the loss of his position as Gertrude s husband to mourning for the loss of his father in
an act of displacement.
Evidence for the Oedipal complex can be found in Hamlet s anger at Gertrude for so quickly
remarrying to Claudius and not showing proper grief towards her former husband, King Hamlet.
In act 3 scene 4, Hamlet rebukes Gertrude for a deed ...as bad, good mother, / As kill a king and
marry his brother (lines 29 30). In this scene, Hamlet claims that Gertrude was King Hamlet s
killer, which is contradictory to what the King Hamlet s Ghost had stated: that Claudius had killed
him. To explain this logical inconsistency, the psychoanalytic element of condensation must be
understood, as according to Freud, condensation and displacement are closely related. Condensation
is the representation of multiple emotions in a single idea. Several meanings are condensed into one
image.
An example of condensation in Hamlet can be found in the relationship between Hamlet and King
Hamlet s Ghost. Throughout the play, it is unclear whether the Ghost is real or simply a figment
of Hamlet s imagination. In act 1 scene 1, the Ghost appears to the castle guards as ...this dreaded
sight twice seen of us (line 23). Horatio and Marcellus have seen the

Analysis Of The Asian Crisis And The Asian Model
Both Robert Wade s and Charles Kindleberger s respective pieces, Wheels Within Wheels:
Rethinking the Asian Crisis and the Asian Model and Manias, Panics and Crashes: A History of
Financial Crises , show how credit booms can lead to market failure. On Wall Street, Kindleberger
recounts how the housing bubble collapsed and how this breakdown affected United States banking
institutions. Firms with a lack of capital income and low capital reserves could not pay off their
debts when scared investors pulled their money out of banks during bank runs. Many firms had
risky investments and low reserves because they believed that the government would bail them out,

He contends that when the East Asian companies opened up their markets to allow in foreign
capital and appease citizens who wanted globalization, they unintentionally doomed themselves for
the future (Wade 107). Before they opened up their markets, bankers in East Asian countries were
very cautious about whom to give loans to, and as a result, banks often had a very good
relationship with those they chose to lend money. As a result, loans were only given out to safe
investments. This changed when these countries opened up to the international economy, which
allowed inflows of foreign capital (95). The United States in the 80 s financed its debts by selling
Treasury Bills, which were commonly bought by foreign banks and then resold for additional
capital. When the United States went into a recession, these foreign banks decided to invest in East
Asian markets because these markets had expansive room for growth, which allowed investors to
get a high return on investment (100). With the new capital, the East Asian countries invested in
industry and asset bubbles, which require constant capital to pay off debts. When the United States
became a good investment again in the mid 1990s, foreign investors started investing back in the
United States. The capital needed to finance the East Asian countries was gone, and these
economies with high debt to equity

Working For Inner City Education Foundation Public Charter...
In many aspects of life, it is essential that you work with other individuals as a team. You can
work in a team whether it is school, work, or your personal life. This year I started working for
Inner City Education Foundation public charter schools, specifically ICEF Inglewood Elementary
Academy. The school has approximately 40 staff members that were all placed together by the
director of the school. There are multiple classifications at my job such as instructional assistants,
teachers, office staff, intervention specialists, operations, and janitors, but we all operate as one
unit. Through the five stages of team development, our team developed and continues to develop
into a successful team.
Forming Stage: When I first started working for the school in August, I never met any of the
people who would be working at the school along with me. The first day I arrived to work I
learned that the new team I was going to be a part of at ICEF Inglewood Elementary had 96% of
new staff. During this time I realized the team was in the forming stage, we were all getting
acquainted and oriented with each other. The team leaders aided in this stage by providing a
breakfast followed by games for the whole staff. During the breakfast, making conversation I felt
the feeling of uncertainty I was not sure if I would like it or fit in. After breakfast, we played games
that were used as ice breakers. The icebreakers we played began to make me feel comfortable and

Honey Beehive Research Paper
Research on the behavior of bees oddly resembles that of humans. Some worker bees lay their
own eggs, a function usually reserved only for the queen. These worker laid eggs are usually
eaten so the social order of the hive does not get disrupted (Luntz, pg.1) One hive examined
showed that worker bees were successful in laying and producing eggs, and also protecting them in
areas the queen was excluded (Luntz, pg.1). This works as an advantage by furthering generation
when they are endangered, but also a disadvantage to the world, because bees are busy reproducing,
when they should be pollinating the Earth (Luntz, pg. 1). Genetically altering the beehive, is
needed to maintain a healthy genome and successful hive. The honeybee genome was finally

Stop And Frisk Essay
Stop and Frisk started in New York City in the early 1990 s as a combined response to the Broken
Windows sociological theory and the ruling in the Terry v. Ohio case. The initial prompt for this
policy came from the ruling in the 1968 Supreme Court case of Terry v. Ohio. The court decided
that fourth amendment rights are not violated when the policestop, detain, and search a suspect on
the street. This ruling paved the way for early implementation of policies similar, but not as wide
spread, as stop and frisk. This ruling paved the way for early implementation of policies similar,
but not as wide spread, as stop and frisk. This theory alleges that by reducing petty crimeyou can
also deter more major crime much in the same way as fixing broken windows (which are thought to
invite potential thieves) will prevent future crime. Kelling s theory combined with the Terry v. Ohio
ruling eventually led to the implementation of full blown Stop and Frisk in the New York Cityarea
during the mayoral term of Rudi Giuliani. The idea behind stop and frisk initially was for police
officers to patrol streets in order to stop those they suspected of carrying illegal goods and then
frisk them to ascertain if they were indeed breaking any laws. This would serve duel purposes in
that those found to be carrying illegal goods would be stopped while letting others in the area who
may be participating in illegal activities know that there was an active police presence there,

Circumcision As A Medical Term Meaning
The word circumcision in the natural is a medical term meaning to remove the prepuce of (a
male). Circumcision is not just an act of removing the foreskin on a males penis but it is also the
removal of part of the clitoris (female).
Circumcise first appears in Genesis 17; God told Abram that he will be circumcised in the flesh to
show his covenant with God (ESV). In the Old Testamentcircumcision was done a sharp flint
stone. It was not just for the Israelites but it was also for the foreigners and servants in the land.
God is talking to Moses in Deuteronomy 10:16, were he makes a covenant with Moses. Verse 16,
God tells Moses circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart and be no longer stubborn
(Deuteronomy 10:16). This is a parallel meaning. First God has obliged the cutting of the foreskin
of the genitals males and now he is making everyone to have their foreskin of their hearts cut.
New Testament circumcision is used in the physical; Jesustold them to circumcise the little boys
on the eight day after his birth (Luke 1:59). However, because in the later writings of Paul,
circumcision had become a overpowering deal between the circumcised and the uncircumcised that
it took away from the Glory of God.
Now, because of Jesus, there is no circumcision nor circumcision because Jesus has become the
savior of both.

40 million people over the age of 18 in the United States suffer from anxiety. My sister Samantha is

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry about
everyday things (Anxietyand Depression Association of America, n.d.). Samantha is 23 years old
and is someone who at one point in my life I did not look up to. Now, she is someone I would

Humane s Inhumane Treatment To Animal Welfare
Humane Treatment to Animal Welfare
Humane treatment and animal welfare of factory farms and slaughterhouse animals are a huge
problem in our society. The rearing of farm animals today is dominated by industrialized facilities
known as confined animal feeding operations. Most farms in the United States treat their animals
unfairly in order to make products easier to sell and faster to make more money faster. Weaning the
animals off of their food at a young age and starting them on a strict diet including mostly fatty
foods, which will help the animal gain weight is common. Another common inhumane treatment in

Dependency on Technology in a Modern World
Dependency on Technology in a Modern World
Introduction
Technology has virtually defined the human condition since the early stages in the species
evolution. First there were rudimentary tools such as arrows and hammering utensils which
allowed humans a far great range in manipulating their environment. Further developments such
as fire, clothing, and shelter and so on changed the way humans lived and every aspect of their
lives. Today s societies have more advanced tools such as a laptop, IPod, GPS, cell phone, a
seemingly infinite number of other gizmos and gadgets that shape their lives. This essay will
question whether these devices will add to our wellbeing and improve our lives or if the
development of technology has hit a threshold point in which further developments are of little
practical value or even of negative consequence.
Communications
Of all the advancements in technology from its inception, the advancement in communication has
to be one of the most revolutionary forces that have come about. People now can communicate
with nearly anyone else in the world for very little cost and instantaneously through a variety of
mediums. People are free to move around the globe and never lose contact with the people that
they care about. Students can live video chat with other student half way around the world and can
even form interactive classrooms with a wide range of participants. Professors can record a lecture

In 19th century in Europe there is rapid increase in suicide. The case of death can be positive
action such as jumping from an upper window or negative action such as hunger strike. Durkheim
eliminates psychotic paranoid suicide because it is non sociological explanation of suicide and it is
not the result of self concise aim. The factor correlation between mental disorder and self
destruction varies considerably.
Scotland had comparatively high level of lunacy but there is low level self destruction. While
Saxony showed a low level of lunacy but a high rate of self destruction. Alcohol addiction and
substance abuse are eliminated by Durkheim (Law, 2011, p.200). Undoubtedly, race itself is
abolished as an irrational concept. In the month of summer and at temperature degrees of latitude
(50 55 degrees), there are more suicide cases because when communion is most competency

Durkheim examines is imitation. Durkheim differing the suicide rates among protestant and
catholic, he argues that stronger social control among catholic result in lower suicide rates.
According to Durkheim, catholic society has normal levels of integration while protestant society
has low levels. He says that suicide rates are higher in men than in women. Suicides rates are
higher among those who are not in relationship than those who are married. Because of the being

The parallel I am choosing to compare and contrast for plot development is the scene where
Andrea quits her job. In the book, Andrea and Miranda are on their way to a fashion show when
Miranda tells Andrea, she reminds her of herself when she was younger, Andrea is rendered
speechless. When they are at the event, Andrea steps outside to take a smoke when Miranda
starts to bombard her phone. Andrea rushes back and Miranda mocks Andrea s incompetence.
Andrea cusses Miranda out and walks out of the fashion show. Ahn dre ah, you realize what you
re doing, do you not? You know that if you simply leave here like this, I m going to be forced
[Miranda] Fuck you, Miranda. Fuck you. [Andrea]. She gasped audibly while her hand flew to her
mouth in shock... (Weisberger, pg.342) This quote shows how fed up Andrea was, since she
essentially tainted her name in the writing world. In the movie, everything starts the same way as in
the book until the point where

Factors That Caused the 1997 East Asian Financial Crisis
Factors That Caused the 1997 East Asia Financial Crisis Discuss the principal factors responsible
for the East Asian currency/financial crisis of 1997. In 1997, there occurred certain shifts in
expectations from the market. The regional contagion and confidence led to the East Asian
financial turmoil. In 1990s, it had been reported that the microeconomic and macroeconomic
businesses were not performing as expected. The local and international investors had not held
enough grips into the looming financial challenges to be expected by the financial fragments. These
investors panicked and participated in fraudulent and faulty approaches and policies of operation in
the market through the influence of the International Monetary Fund together with the global
financial body. The financial policies, which were laid by the small businesses within the region,
had failed to bring enough financial performance in the local and international market. For instance,
reports claim that these businesses were not large enough to hold immense support to the structure
of the economy in the region. With time, the stability of the financial structure was brought to
question. This was later contributed by the influences obtained from the international financial
bodies and the International Monetary Fund committee (Corsetti, Pesenti, Roubini, 1999, p.305 6).
The Asian financial crisis refers to a period of the financial crisis that was experienced in Asia as at
July 1997. This crisis

Discrimination
The aim of the essay is to link sociology and the law and show how law and society are related and
interdependent.
INTRODUCTION
Discrimination separates people instead of uniting them. Discrimination also hampers the self
confidence and affects the psychology of the person being discriminated against. Prejudice causes
several changes in society .Even though these changes might not be intended .Discrimination is a
threat to democracy, democracy is based on the idea of a society in which all individuals enjoy
equal rights and treatment irrespective of their caste , gender, wealth etc. Democracy recognizes the
equal worth of all citizens and has laws that help prevent discrimination in ... Show more content on

Prejudice could also exist in order to get approval from peers and to be accepted in a group for
behaving in a discriminatory way towards someone from another group. Prejudice, discrimination,
and violence against others is effected by times of economic difficulty when others come into the
city to do jobs that the indigenous people would otherwise do. Prejudices normally are carried on
after generations and such prejudice with histories are not easy for societies to get rid of. It could
be the result of race, religion, disability, social status, upbringing, trying to maintain an advantage,
for financial/material gain, prejudice, gender, looks, age, background etc.
It is a right of every individual to be given equal protection against discrimination to ensure there is
equality before the law. This right is a universal human right(Universal D eclaration on Human
Rights) and its violation is not limited to a country in particular; discrimination in today s world is
everywhere.
Prohibition of discrimination is also an essential element of national legal systems, as it seeks to
eliminate arbitrariness in dec ision making, en hancing the in clusiveness and predictability o f
decision making and thus the functioning of the legal system .
From the societal point of view, th e protection of esp ecially national, ethnic and religious
minorities is also a matter of national

A Day Is A Special Holiday For Those Who ve Lost A Soldier
Memorial Day is a special holiday for those who ve lost a loved one in military service. For me, the
holiday is two fold. Yes, I remember the passing of my military dad, , but it s also the day I
remember all the best things about my father. It s when I celebrate Father s Day.
My father was always proud to be a soldier. Sure, he would grumble about Army politics or how
the service caused him to have bad knees and feet. Yet. he was good at being a solider. This was
ironic because he did not choose to join the Army on his own.
He, like many others, was part of the Vietnam draft. My father had no intentions of being a military
man. He was going to go to a local college and play football. That dream was cut short when he
received his draft letter right before graduation football dreams would have to wait. After the
war ended and he satisfied his minimal service requirements, he did not leave. He re enlisted and
went on to serve 20 years in the Army. He retired before he was 40. It would seem that with a full
military career and generous retirement package under his belt, he would relax and move on. This
was not the case, he had a hard time relaxing into civilian life.
My dad had a rough childhood. He grew up poor in a little town in Eastern Kentucky with no
father figure. Sure, he showed promise and talent in playing football at the local college, but
academics was not on his horizon. Whether he realized it or not at the time, the Army was not only
an escape from his

Importance of Symbols Essay
Importance of Symbols
In all novels the use of symbols are what make the story feel so real to the reader. A symbol as
simple as a bird can mean so much more then what you see. Whereas a symbol as complicated as
the sea, can mean so much less then what you thought. It is a person perception that brings them to
the true meaning of a specific symbol. Symbols are message within a word that must be analyzed
to discover. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin conveys her ideas by using carefully crafted symbols
that reflect her characters thoughts and futures.
Early in the novel, while Edna attempts to escape from society s strong grasp, birds emphasize her
entanglement by forecasting her actions and monitor her development by reflecting her ... Show

Mademoiselle Reisz says, it is a sad spectacle to see the weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering
back to earth (83). This bird symbolizes Edna?s struggle to become the master of her own life as
well as her failure to achieve this goal. Mademoiselle Reisz understands that Edna cannot fight
society and uses birds to demonstrate this knowledge. The bird, like Edna, is the only one who
possessed sufficient candor to tell the truth about society (23).
Finally, Edna moves to what she calls her exhausted pigeon house. The name that Edna chooses for
this house implies the defeat of a bird that, in turn, implies the defeat of Edna. Throughout Edna s
life, birds reflect her actions and feelings.
All through the book, sleep is an important and reoccurring subject. Edna often sleeps in order to
recover from the stress of her awakenings. After her first solo swim she feels the physical need
for sleep [begin] to overtake her; the exuberance which had sustained and exalted her spirit left her
helpless and yielding to the conditions which crowded her in (34). She needs sleep to repair her
disheveled emotions after her aesthetic and physical awakenings. Without sleep, Edna is physically
and mentally unable to realize her ambitions.
Another symbolic example of Edna sleeping occurs at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in
Cheniere Caminada. There, Edna is overcome by her emotions during service. She realizes that she
is going against

Sexting Among Teenage Girls and Boys
Over the last few years, there has been a lot of discussion and debate over the topic of sexting. It
has become a widespread phenomenon, the number of teenage girls and boys, men and women
who participate are rapidly increasing, and with this too comes the rise of moral panic within
societies. Individuals within the communities are becoming more and more fearful, afraid and
shocked at this new form of youth culture hysteria. Although young people expressing their
sexuality has become much more open and free as of the last decade or so, the real uproar of
panic is due to the risks they involving themselves in as well as the damage and harm they are
inflicting on themselves, whether they know it or not.
Sexting is the act of sending, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And this is what is key to the moral panic of sexting, constant over exaggeration. As stated before
the technology and means to sext have always been available, so why now is there such anxiety
and fear towards sexting? A reason as to why this may be so, is because of the number of teens
who have committed suicide over leaked sexts. One of the most infamous cases of suicide
related to this issue is of 18 year old Jesse Logan who was mercilessly harassed at the hands of
her peers. She was dating a 19 year old boy and had sent him nude pictures of herself. However
after they broke up, he sent those photos to another girl who then sent them to others and soon
the whole school knew about it and had seen the photos. From there is where the severe bullying
started. On the Today show Jesse s friend, Lauren Taylor told NBC News about some of the
abuse which was inflicted upon Jessie Logan. She says When she would come to school, she
would always hear, Oh, that s the girl who sent the picture. She s just a whore . Her mother
Cynthia Logan said that She was being attacked and tortured . Even through the bullying Jesse
Logan made the decision to appear on a tv station to tell her story and make sure no one else
makes the same mistake. After enduring further harassment and abuse, Jesse was finally able to
graduate and looked to move on with her life. But after attending the funeral of one of her friends
the following year who had committed

Krik Edwidge Danticat Analysis
Sometimes it s relaxing to let other people handle your decisions for you. Other times it s
restraining. The case between Haitians and their government certainly falls on the restricting
side. The Haitians often turn to the only thing they have a chance at their freedom in: death.
Edwidge Danticat, author of Krik? Krak! uses a collection of short stories to educate developed
countries on the situation most of them have been blissfully ignorant of. Danticat uses the
symbols of sky and blood to intertwine the themes of freedom and death. Most of the stories
have death as their last choice in life for Haitians, but not everyone gets it as a choice. Swiss s
birth and almost immediate death in Children of the Sea strike a chord in the boy s heart. He
says, If she was my daughter, I would call her Soleil, Sun, Moon, or Star, after the elements (18).
Her death reminds him of the freedom that comes along with it, and wishes for her entire being to
represent it.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Still reaching for the freedom they yearned, but free from their lives. When Guy falls to his
death, Danticat illustrates his eyes, And those eyes, those night colored eyes. Though clouded
with blood, Guy s eyes were still bulging open (66). His eyes reflect death and freedom within it.
He managed to gain his greatest wish, but at the cost of spilling much blood. When the foreman
asks if he should close Guy s eyes, Guy s wife tells him, Leave them open . . . my husband, he likes
to look at the sky (67). He still stared towards the ultimate goal, but at least achieved a part of it,

There s often memorials and monuments commemorating heroes in wars or battles taken place
in the world. They re often of famous leaders or generals; however, this isn t always the case.
One of the most well known photos from WWII wasn t even of anyone that people knew. it wasn
t a battle scene or place. it was simply two common people embracing the victory with each
other. During world war II, which lasted from 1939 to 1945, the casualties were great. Over 60
million people s lives were lost; 419,400 of them being Americans. So many Americans lives
were lost and it truly took a toll on the nation. The official date of the end of the war isn t
universally agreed upon, but most people consider it to be August 14, 1945, also known as V J day.

who were the people pictured, many men had claimed to be the sailor but only the nurse s identity
was confirmed. For the longest time, people had thought that Edith Shain was the woman in the
picture, but she was the only one who came forward about it, later one two other women contacted
Life magazine and claimed to be the nurse. The two women were Greta Friedman and Barbara

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux Essay
Jean Baptiste Carpeaux
1827 1875
The son and grandson of stonemasons, Jean Baptiste Carpeaux was born in 1827 in Valenciennes
and moved to Paris at the age of eleven. Beginning in the early 1840s he studied at the Petite
Ecole, the state school for training in the applied arts, formally called the Ecole Gratuite de Dessin,
before entering the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1844, where he changed masters repeatedly, oscillating
between typical student ambition (optimal credentials for the Prix de Rome) and his interest in
more liberal approaches. Carpeaux moved from Ecole painter Abel de Pujol (1785 1861), to the
independent sculptor François Rude, and finally to the prestigious Ecole sculptor Francisque
Joseph Duret (1804 1865). After winning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He entered the imperial circle in 1864 as artistic tutor to the Prince Imperial, and executed the boy
s bust and full scale portrait statue for the prince s parents (both mid 1860s, marble; MusГ©e d
Orsay, Paris). He also received some of the most significant monumental commissions of the
period: the architectural decoration of the Pavillon de Flore of the Palais du Louvre (1863 1866,
Imperial France Enlightening the World and the Triumph of Flora); and The Dance (1865 1869) for
the facade of the Paris OpГ©ra. His native Valenciennes commissioned several public projects
between 1860 and 1884, including a monument to another of its native artists, Antoine Watteau
(1684 1721).
This extraordinary activity was interrupted by the upheavals after the fall of the Second Empire
and by Carpeaux s increasing frailty with cancer. He executed some smaller figures and portraits
upon commission and completed his monumental projects in Paris (1868 1874, Observatory
Fountain, Jardin du Luxembourg). He mainly focused on amassing income through commercial
edition, hoping to recoup his devastating financial losses from those projects and from the war.
Estranged from his family, Carpeaux spent the last two years of his life traveling, in the care of
patrons, and in clinics. He died in 1875.
An ambitious entrepreneur even as an Ecole student a flagrant violation of the academic policy
forbidding commerce Carpeaux produced serial works throughout his career.

Aggression In Lord Of The Flies
People see young boys as an energetic ball of light, but when something drastic happens, it can
show their inner aggression, and savagery. In William Golding s novel Lord of the Flies, a group
of young boys are trapped on an island, resulting from a plane crash. They slowly start to try and
govern each other, and through that time their personalities start to change. William Golding
represents male aggression as a detrimental characteristic in Lord of the Flies by showing events,
which affects the boy s on the island. The aggression and anger that the boys uphold, sometimes
worked out for them, but untimely got outweighed by the negativity of their actions.
To start, any sign of aggression can influence the way the boy s show emotion to other people. ...

They tend lose their original personality and it can change their mental health state. An article on
aggression and violence from good therapy.org suggests that, It cannot usually be anticipated by
the people it affects, and victims of violent acts may experience serious mental health issues as a
result, such as posttraumatic stress, depression, and anxiety. It explains how the affects of
people with aggression can t be determined, and it can go anywhere. After the brutal death of
Simon, one of the boy s states, But didn t we, didn t we ? (Golding 160.) He was asking the
other boys. Golding showed the boy s reaction: he squirmed and looked down. (160) Jack s
response was filled with anger, and no regret: No! (160.) Golding wrote, In the silence that
followed, each savage flinched away from his individual memory. (160). In this, the boys, especially
Jack are dealing with the fact that they just murdered Simon. It shows that Jack has no feelings of
empathy towards them killing what they thought was the beast. This emotionless

Christmas Day In Japan
You might wonder what other people in the world are doing at this time of the year. Well, this
paper will tell you all about what the Japanese people do during Christmas. You may be surprised at
what they do during this special holiday. In Japan they do celebrate Christmas, but surprisingly
celebrating Christmasis not their number one priority. Although they celebrate Christmas on the
same day that we do they celebrate Christmas eveeven more, and they do not celebrate it in a way
that would be common. Many people in Japan think of Christmas eve as a day of peace and love.
They celebrate Christmas eve like it is another valentine s day, and usually go to a fancy restaurant
and buy each other a gift. Another tradition that many Japanese people do on Christmas and
Christmas eve is the Disney Christmas Parade. The Disney Christmas Parade is when they have a
parade with many Disney characters who pass out candy and do some cool tricks. Not only do
they celebrate it like a valentine s day, but they also have many favorite foods. Some of their
favorite foods that they have are KFC and strawberry shortcake. It may sound weird that they eat
KFC on Christmas eve and Christmas day, but it is a tradition around Japan. KFC in Japan was
first introduced when a Japanese family could not find any turkey for Christmas and so they ate
fried chicken instead. The KFC manager saw his opportunity and decide to run a campaign called
Kentucky for Christmas . Kentucky for Christmas was very

Skeletal Muscle Icad In this study, we have developed an ICAD scheme to automatically segment and compute the Psoas muscle at the level L3 of the vertebral spine as well as computing and demonstrating different tissues in the skeletal muscle which are very crucial for clinical researchers to make a good analysis. In order to process the ICAD scheme, different stages should be followed such as finding the CT slice which contains the level of L3, determining the region of interest, segmenting the musclewith the use of region growing algorithm, and computing and determining different tissuesin the skeletal muscle by applying a different threshold. • 4. How Does Emily BrontГ« Demonstrate The Balance Of Women s... Britain s society had an unbalance of power during the late eighteenth century amongst genders. The roles of men and women were distinct, however the women had far less say and input. In the novel Wuthering Heights, Emily BrontГ« displays the revolutionary change amongst women beginning in the late 1860s. The barrier of not having a voice as well as restricted freedom had finally been broken down. The roles of women have progressed drastically from the stay home mother, to marriage rights, to finally the rebellious actions of women wanting to achieve their individualism. In the beginning stages of reforming women s roles, they were only stay home mothers. Women were the domestic interiors of the house, maintaining the inside and everything... • 5. Justice Is The Legal Or Philosophical Theory Of Justice Justice is the art which gives to each man what is good for his soul. Discuss. Justice is the art which gives to each man what is good for his soul and that is simply to say that justice is identical with, or inseparable with philosophy. (Cahn, Political Philosophy, 1 136) Justice is an order and duty of the parts of the soul; it is to the soul as medicine preserves the health of the body. In its current and cardinal definition is a just behavior or treatment; a concern for justice, peace, and genuine respect for people. (Oxford Dictionary, Justice ) Justice is the legal or philosophical theory by which fairness is administered. However, justice is polymorphic; depending on eras and civilizations also differing in every culture. Although there some principles of justice that can be found to be almost universal. An early theory of justice was set out by the Ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his work The Republic. Plato was highly dissatisfied with the prevailing degenerating conditions in Athens. The Athenian democracy was on the verge of ruin and was ultimately responsible for Socrates death his mentor. Plato saw in justice the only remedy of saving Athens from decay and ruin. Evidently, factors such as amateurishness, political selfishness and excessive individualism became main targets of Plato s attack which were rampant in the Greek world. Agitated in contemporary affairs, the attack came in the form of the construction of an ideal society in which justice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. To Sleep is to Dream I have often had dreams that were so real and vivid, that I was unable to tell if they truly happened or occurred in my dreams. Sleeping is very important to everyone. Without proper sleep, the body s immune system can begin to fail, and then one will become more susceptible to virus, illnesses, and disease. Even when we are asleep, the human mind does not completely sleep. When we are asleep, we tend to tune out environmental sounds that occur when we sleep. For example, I live near a freeway, yet the sounds of it never wake me. The auditory cortex in our brains respond to stimuli even when we are asleep. For example, I can always wake up when one of my children calls my name while I am in a deep slumber. There have been many studies and observations on individuals while they are asleep. These studies are done on individuals who have sleep disorders. There are four phases of sleep, and when one does not get the proper sleep, physical and mental issues will occur. Our bodies work in tides, and our minds and bodies fluctuate. When our bodies seem to synchronize with the 24 hour day, it is referred to as the circadian rhythm. It is the biological clock that tells us when it is day time we are awake, and night time is when we are supposed to sleep. Age and experience can affect the circadian rhythm, and I see this in myself. For instance, when I was in my teens and twenty s, I had no problem staying up all night, whether it was working a graveyard shift, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Harm Reduction and Drug Policy Alliance are just some of the groups working toward changing the views and laws regarding drugs and drug addiction. In a seminal cost benefit analysis done in the early 1990s, the RAND Corporation compared the programmatic productivity and the costs of enforcing the war on drugs in terms of arresting and in carcerating dealers and their agents, versus treatment. RAND s research found that a dollar spent on drug treatment saves society seven and a half dollars in reduced crime and regained productivity. A good treatment facility will not only rehabilitate the patient from doing drugs but will also give them tools to go back into society and have a job and be a good citizen not committing crime. Also putting a drug abuser in treatment opposed to incarceration will give them a better chance at getting a job because they will not have a criminal record. • 11. The Importance Of Self Portraits Throughout the twentieth century numerous standards were pressured onto women. Whether they be physical standards, such as feminine features and modesty, or standards in relation to their actions, such as the need for women to be mothers and have men in their lives and to keep their sexualtiy hidden from the world. There were many female artists who protested against these boundaries women were put into by society through self portraits. However, these forms of protest expressed through art were not always accepted or praised as well as they are in modern times. There were many women who took a stand within their art against standards placed on women. In the 20th century, self portraits were heavily used as a form of protest by female artists in order to reject societal standards placed on women. Paula Modersohn Becker was a female artist whose self portraits opened up a new path of self expression of European female self portraitures within the 20th century. For years, nude portraits were created primarily for male gaze; female models were purchased by male artists and were painted as sex objects. Paula Modersohn Becker rebels against this sexist norm by simply being her own muse. Modersohn Becker s use of the female nude was a powerful reclaiming of her own body. A new trail was blazed in 1906, with her painting Self Portrait, Age 30, 6th Wedding Day. In the painting, for the first time, the partially nude model is the artist herself. This all started back in the 13th century, when two men, Jakob Sprenger and Heinrich Kramer wrote a book that was called Malleus Maleficarum, that is, The Hammer of Witches. This book caused the worries of witchcraftand got witch hunts started. In the article The Inquisition and The Hammer of Witches the text says Both Catholics and Protestants accepted it as the authority on witchcraft. The work contained imaginative stories about witches based on folklore, presented theological and legal arguments against witchcraft, and provided guidelines on how to identify and eliminate witches. The Hammer of Witches has been described as the most vicious and . . . the most damaging book in all of world literature. (The European Witch Hunts) This book caused huge witch hunts to break out in Europe. To identify people that were accused of being a witch the article says Some suspects were bound and put into a blessed body of cold water. If they sank, they were deemed innocent and pulled out. If they floated, they were considered witches and executed on the spot or handed over to be tried. Other suspects were weighed because it was thought that witches had little or no weight. they also would check suspects for a devils marking If the markings didn t hurt or bleed when they were pricked, they were considered marks from satan. • 14. The Pros And Cons Of Cognitive Linguistics Cognitive Linguistics is a new approach to the study of language which views linguistic knowledge as part of general cognition and thinking. It emerged through the work of George Lakoff and Ronald Langacker and considers that linguistic behavior is not separated from other general cognitive abilities which allow mental processes of reasoning or memory but understood as an integral part of it. According to Lakoff and Johnson, there is a conceptual potential that enables the transferring of the knowledge and experience human beings have of the things and events that they know well, to those other objects and events with which they may not be so familiar with, and even to abstract concepts. (Johnson)One of the main theoretical principles of cognitive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are certain approaches that focus on the text, like the formalist and structuralist ones, others focus on the writer like the biographical or psychological ones. Each of these approaches has their own positive and negative aspects. A cognitive linguistic approach to literature reconciles both the above mentioned theories and takes into consideration a third aspect: the reader. Literary experience becomes thus the result of the conceptualization of all the conceptual aspects of human experience and behavior. A cognitive approach to literature rests on three key principles from cognitive science: the notion that meaning is embodied, the notion that categorization is a feature of prototype effects, so that categories are also socio culturally grounded in embodiment, and the notion that language and its manifestations in interpretation is a natural human trait. (Stockwell) Recent work in cognitive linguistics explores the analogical processes by which the human brain makes sense of its world. So the way authors think is the way we think. Claiborne Rice states that textual production and reception necessarily rely on identical, or even similar, integration networks (Rice) Joseph Grady asserts that speakers and hearers share the same cognitive network structures. (Grady) According to Fauconnier and Turner, the same structures are at work in both production and reception. (Fauconnier) Under these views we understand that the human mind thinks analogically. The components of analogy include cognitive mapping skills that create levels of identification between across different domains and mental spaces. In order to understand what literary critics do when analyzing a literary text, we need to identify the kinds of cognitive mappings they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. War During The Twentieth Century War Poetry Essay Throughout the twentieth century, many poets have written about war. They have protested against it, created propaganda in support, celebrated conflict, and questioned it. War in general tends to evoke emotion in everyone, whether it is pride in a country, grief of losing a loved one, fear of the unknown, or even happiness because of a victory. On page one of Philippa Lyon s Twentieth Century War Poetry, she writes, ...much poetry has been written by individuals (both male and female) who were not necessarily in the thick of battle. She is saying that a lot of them poems were written by individuals with a different point of view of the war than the soldiers. Not all of war poetry was written by soldier poets, who offer a first hand account of what it was like and their experiences. Lyons then continues and writes, ...the poetry poses direct questions about motivation, intent and fairness; that is to say, about the nature, morality and politics of war. The individuals had many questions about the war and they present those questions through poetry. It is not always seen as an individual s hardship and struggles turned into art. Amy Lowells September 1918 and Carl Sandburg s Grass both describe a common theme of war, which evokes a spectrum of emotions. The results of the conflict were the death of almost one million Rwandan citizens, mostly Tutsi. Initially, the conflict arose when Belgium internationals came into Rwandaand gave power to the Tutsi, who were lighter skinned and taller, which led to extremist Hutugroups to arise in response to this unfairness. The concept of groupthink comes from Irving Janis who discusses how small groups tend to be vulnerable to a dangerous psychological process (Barash 2014, 31). This group mentality allows for desensitization as well as a thirst for power. During the film, Paul Rusesabagina interacts multiple times with Georges Rutaganda who leads Interahamwe, a cruel local Hutu militia. Often he is seen trying to influence Paul into agreeing with his ideals either with threats or solicitations. There is a parade for Hutu Power during the film, where George is seen dancing along others whom are all brandishing weapons. This scene is significant because it shows how blissful events such as parades can influence individuals to celebrate a cause that is questionable. Additionally, one important symptom of groupthink is the illusion of being invulnerable to the main dangers that might arise from a risky action in which the group is strongly tempted to engage (Barash 2014, 35). It seemed as though throughout the film the members of the militia felt invincible and did not believe action would be taken against them, as was often the case. In the Andrew Marvell poem To His Coy Mistress, I would argue over the issue of love versus lust. In this poem, we are introduced to a man who is infatuated with a young woman and wants to become intimate with her. He tries to pursue this young woman, but the woman is playfully hesitant. The man is trying to explain to the young woman if she keeps being resistant to him, they would never get a chance become intimate. The man states in first couple of lines, But at my back I always hear time s winged chariot hurrying near. The man is trying to tell the woman that they should not wait to embrace each other physically because no one is here on this earth forever. The man describes to the woman that all they will have left in the end is the grave. In the final part of the stanza, the man says The grave s a fine and private place, but none I think do there embrace. The man is trying to explain to the young woman that though the grave is a fairly private place, they will not be able to make love because they are no longer here on this earth. He also states that in the end he will no longer have the feelings he has for her now because his time here on earth will be done for. At this particular part of the poem, I would say that the man is using anything in his power to convince the young woman to sleep with him. The man seems very lustful at this point, so the love that the man somewhat conveyed for the young woman at the beginning of the poem has slowly drifted away. But most importantly it is based on the convention that the Northern hemisphere is at the top of the world, and the Southern hemisphere is at the bottom . Such an assumption is made mainly out of habit, but it is also a topic of contradictory ideas. It is inaccurate to assume that the Northern hemisphere should be on top, for depending on which angle one looks at the Earth, the Southern hemisphere is on top. This is illustrated by another type of map projection, known as the Hobo Dyer projection. Although the shapes of the continents are distorted, sizes are reflected accurately. Many people find this map faulty due to the habitual way of thinking that north should be on top. • 22. Is Hamlet Grieving For His Father s Death In Hamlet Analysis When analyzing Hamlet under a psychological lens, one can speculate on why exactly Hamlet is so fixated on the death of his father. Is the cause a heartfelt relationship between Hamlet and King Hamlet? Or is Hamlet displacing the real motive for his grief? It is possible that Hamlet is not grieving for his father s death after all, but subconsciously grieving for something else. Due to the death of King Hamlet, Hamlet would have inherited the kingdom if it wasn t for the existence of Claudius, who took over the throne instead. Perhaps Hamlet is grieving the loss of this position to his uncle. The context of the Oedipal complex can be applied to this scenario, as Hamlet would be taking the position of Gertrudes husband, which according to Freud, satisfies the subconscious desire universally present in all humans of wanting to have sex with the parent of the opposite gender. Since this idea is unacceptable and dangerous to Hamlet, he subconsciously transfers his mourning for the loss of his position as Gertrude s husband to mourning for the loss of his father in an act of displacement. Evidence for the Oedipal complex can be found in Hamlet s anger at Gertrude for so quickly remarrying to Claudius and not showing proper grief towards her former husband, King Hamlet. In act 3 scene 4, Hamlet rebukes Gertrude for a deed ...as bad, good mother, / As kill a king and marry his brother (lines 29 30). In this scene, Hamlet claims that Gertrude was King Hamlet s killer, which is contradictory to what the King Hamlet s Ghost had stated: that Claudius had killed him. To explain this logical inconsistency, the psychoanalytic element of condensation must be understood, as according to Freud, condensation and displacement are closely related. Condensation is the representation of multiple emotions in a single idea. Several meanings are condensed into one image. An example of condensation in Hamlet can be found in the relationship between Hamlet and King Hamlet s Ghost. Throughout the play, it is unclear whether the Ghost is real or simply a figment of Hamlet s imagination. In act 1 scene 1, the Ghost appears to the castle guards as ...this dreaded sight twice seen of us (line 23). Horatio and Marcellus have seen the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Asian Crisis And The Asian Model Both Robert Wade s and Charles Kindleberger s respective pieces, Wheels Within Wheels: Rethinking the Asian Crisis and the Asian Model and Manias, Panics and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises , show how credit booms can lead to market failure. On Wall Street, Kindleberger recounts how the housing bubble collapsed and how this breakdown affected United States banking institutions. Firms with a lack of capital income and low capital reserves could not pay off their debts when scared investors pulled their money out of banks during bank runs. He contends that when the East Asian companies opened up their markets to allow in foreign capital and appease citizens who wanted globalization, they unintentionally doomed themselves for the future (Wade 107). Before they opened up their markets, bankers in East Asian countries were very cautious about whom to give loans to, and as a result, banks often had a very good relationship with those they chose to lend money. As a result, loans were only given out to safe investments. This changed when these countries opened up to the international economy, which allowed inflows of foreign capital (95). The United States in the 80 s financed its debts by selling Treasury Bills, which were commonly bought by foreign banks and then resold for additional capital. When the United States went into a recession, these foreign banks decided to invest in East Asian markets because these markets had expansive room for growth, which allowed investors to get a high return on investment (100). With the new capital, the East Asian countries invested in industry and asset bubbles, which require constant capital to pay off debts. When the United States became a good investment again in the mid 1990s, foreign investors started investing back in the United States. The capital needed to finance the East Asian countries was gone, and these economies with high debt to equity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You can work in a team whether it is school, work, or your personal life. This year I started working for Inner City Education Foundation public charter schools, specifically ICEF Inglewood Elementary Academy. The school has approximately 40 staff members that were all placed together by the director of the school. There are multiple classifications at my job such as instructional assistants, teachers, office staff, intervention specialists, operations, and janitors, but we all operate as one unit. • 30. Stop And Frisk Essay Stop and Frisk started in New York City in the early 1990 s as a combined response to the Broken Windows sociological theory and the ruling in the Terry v. Ohio case. The initial prompt for this policy came from the ruling in the 1968 Supreme Court case of Terry v. Ohio. The court decided that fourth amendment rights are not violated when the policestop, detain, and search a suspect on the street. This ruling paved the way for early implementation of policies similar, but not as wide spread, as stop and frisk. This ruling paved the way for early implementation of policies similar, but not as wide spread, as stop and frisk. This theory alleges that by reducing petty crimeyou can also deter more major crime much in the same way as fixing broken windows (which are thought to invite potential thieves) will prevent future crime. Kelling s theory combined with the Terry v. Ohio ruling eventually led to the implementation of full blown Stop and Frisk in the New York Cityarea during the mayoral term of Rudi Giuliani. The idea behind stop and frisk initially was for police officers to patrol streets in order to stop those they suspected of carrying illegal goods and then frisk them to ascertain if they were indeed breaking any laws. This would serve duel purposes in that those found to be carrying illegal goods would be stopped while letting others in the area who may be participating in illegal activities know that there was an active police presence there, hopefully deterring ... Circumcision is not just an act of removing the foreskin on a males penis but it is also the removal of part of the clitoris (female). Circumcise first appears in Genesis 17; God told Abram that he will be circumcised in the flesh to show his covenant with God (ESV). In the Old Testamentcircumcision was done a sharp flint stone. It was not just for the Israelites but it was also for the foreigners and servants in the land. God is talking to Moses in Deuteronomy 10:16, were he makes a covenant with Moses. Verse 16, God tells Moses circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart and be no longer stubborn (Deuteronomy 10:16). This is a parallel meaning. First God has obliged the cutting of the foreskin of the genitals males and now he is making everyone to have their foreskin of their hearts cut. New Testament circumcision is used in the physical; Jesustold them to circumcise the little boys on the eight day after his birth (Luke 1:59). However, because in the later writings of Paul, circumcision had become a overpowering deal between the circumcised and the uncircumcised that it took away from the Glory of God. Factors That Caused the 1997 East Asian Financial Crisis Factors That Caused the 1997 East Asia Financial Crisis Discuss the principal factors responsible for the East Asian currency/financial crisis of 1997. In 1997, there occurred certain shifts in expectations from the market. The regional contagion and confidence led to the East Asian financial turmoil. In 1990s, it had been reported that the microeconomic and macroeconomic businesses were not performing as expected. The local and international investors had not held enough grips into the looming financial challenges to be expected by the financial fragments. These investors panicked and participated in fraudulent and faulty approaches and policies of operation in the market through the influence of the International Monetary Fund together with the global financial body. The financial policies, which were laid by the small businesses within the region, had failed to bring enough financial performance in the local and international market. For instance, reports claim that these businesses were not large enough to hold immense support to the structure of the economy in the region. With time, the stability of the financial structure was brought to question. This was later contributed by the influences obtained from the international financial bodies and the International Monetary Fund committee (Corsetti, Pesenti, Roubini, 1999, p.305 6). • 46. A Day Is A Special Holiday For Those Who ve Lost A Soldier Memorial Day is a special holiday for those who ve lost a loved one in military service. For me, the holiday is two fold. Yes, I remember the passing of my military dad, , but it s also the day I remember all the best things about my father. It s when I celebrate Father s Day. My father was always proud to be a soldier. Sure, he would grumble about Army politics or how the service caused him to have bad knees and feet. Yet. he was good at being a solider. This was ironic because he did not choose to join the Army on his own. He, like many others, was part of the Vietnam draft. My father had no intentions of being a military man. He was going to go to a local college and play football. That dream was cut short when he received his draft letter right before graduation football dreams would have to wait. After the war ended and he satisfied his minimal service requirements, he did not leave. He re enlisted and went on to serve 20 years in the Army. He retired before he was 40. It would seem that with a full military career and generous retirement package under his belt, he would relax and move on. This was not the case, he had a hard time relaxing into civilian life. My dad had a rough childhood. He grew up poor in a little town in Eastern Kentucky with no father figure. Sure, he showed promise and talent in playing football at the local college, but academics was not on his horizon. Whether he realized it or not at the time, the Army was not only an escape from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A symbol as simple as a bird can mean so much more then what you see. Whereas a symbol as complicated as the sea, can mean so much less then what you thought. It is a person perception that brings them to the true meaning of a specific symbol. Symbols are message within a word that must be analyzed to discover. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin conveys her ideas by using carefully crafted symbols that reflect her characters thoughts and futures. This bird symbolizes Edna?s struggle to become the master of her own life as well as her failure to achieve this goal. Mademoiselle Reisz understands that Edna cannot fight society and uses birds to demonstrate this knowledge. The bird, like Edna, is the only one who possessed sufficient candor to tell the truth about society (23). Finally, Edna moves to what she calls her exhausted pigeon house. The name that Edna chooses for this house implies the defeat of a bird that, in turn, implies the defeat of Edna. Throughout Edna s life, birds reflect her actions and feelings. All through the book, sleep is an important and reoccurring subject. Edna often sleeps in order to recover from the stress of her awakenings. After her first solo swim she feels the physical need for sleep [begin] to overtake her; the exuberance which had sustained and exalted her spirit left her helpless and yielding to the conditions which crowded her in (34). She needs sleep to repair her disheveled emotions after her aesthetic and physical awakenings. Without sleep, Edna is physically and mentally unable to realize her ambitions. Another symbolic example of Edna sleeping occurs at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Cheniere Caminada. There, Edna is overcome by her emotions during service. As stated before the technology and means to sext have always been available, so why now is there such anxiety and fear towards sexting? A reason as to why this may be so, is because of the number of teens who have committed suicide over leaked sexts. One of the most infamous cases of suicide related to this issue is of 18 year old Jesse Logan who was mercilessly harassed at the hands of her peers. She was dating a 19 year old boy and had sent him nude pictures of herself. However after they broke up, he sent those photos to another girl who then sent them to others and soon the whole school knew about it and had seen the photos. • 50. Krik Edwidge Danticat Analysis Sometimes it s relaxing to let other people handle your decisions for you. Other times it s restraining. The case between Haitians and their government certainly falls on the restricting side. The Haitians often turn to the only thing they have a chance at their freedom in: death. Edwidge Danticat, author of Krik? Krak! uses a collection of short stories to educate developed countries on the situation most of them have been blissfully ignorant of. Danticat uses the symbols of sky and blood to intertwine the themes of freedom and death. Most of the stories have death as their last choice in life for Haitians, but not everyone gets it as a choice. Swiss s birth and almost immediate death in Children of the Sea strike a chord in the boy s heart. This extraordinary activity was interrupted by the upheavals after the fall of the Second Empire and by Carpeaux s increasing frailty with cancer. He executed some smaller figures and portraits upon commission and completed his monumental projects in Paris (1868 1874, Observatory Fountain, Jardin du Luxembourg). He mainly focused on amassing income through commercial edition, hoping to recoup his devastating financial losses from those projects and from the war. Estranged from his family, Carpeaux spent the last two years of his life traveling, in the care of patrons, and in clinics. He died in 1875.
