The Dawn Of Retinal Prosthetic Devices
The Dawn of Retinal Prosthetic Devices
The war against human blindness has been ongoing affair since the beginning of time. Because the
origin of blindness varies from case to case, there is no single remedy and limited solutions are
available to the visually impaired. However, recent technological breakthroughs have allowed
scientists and doctors to test out possible solutions to a particular niche in the blindness spectrum:
degenerative retinal diseases. Degenerative retinal diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) attack
the retina exclusively. Because of that exclusivity, the other structures in the eye are typically not
compromised. Therefore, the use of a retinal implant or prosthetic device to restore functional vision is
possible. While it is important to note that retinal implants are still a pioneering technology, clinical
trials such as the Argus II clinical trial, and eye health care professionals alike are reporting promising
results. As such, it seems likely that retinal prosthetic devices will be a game changer in the future
treatment of degenerative retinal diseases since the devices can restore a form of vision to an
otherwise blind patient.
Retina and Retinal Disease

Loyalty In Julius Caesar
In Shakespeare s play, Julius Caesar, the character Mark Antony remains the same throughout the play
making him a static character. Antony s character has a wide variety of character traits but most of
them remain unchanged throughout the play. And so even though Antony is a well rounded character
he is still static because his many character traits remain the same. Some examples of Antony s traits
that remain constant are his loyalty to Caesar, his manipulative behavior, his selfishness, and his
honor. Antony is loyal to Caesar from the beginning of the play through the end of it. He shows his
loyalty to Caesar at the beginning of the play when he says I shall remember: when Caesar says do
this, it is perform d. (1, 2, 93). When Antony says this he is only responding to Caesar s request to
touch his wife Calphurnia as he runs past in a race but this still shows Antony s willingness to follow
what Caesar says. When Antony says this he is essentially stating that he is willing to follow any order
that Caesar gives him to demonstrate his loyalty. Antony demonstrates his loyalty again later in the
play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His first display of honor was when after Caesar was killed he vowed to seek revenge by saying
domestic fury and civil strife will cumber all the parts of Italy (3, 1, 278 279). Antony believes that a
civil war is what is needed to stop the conspirators from gaining power and to avenge Caesar s death.
This part of the play shows that Antony is honorable because he is respecting his friend by avenging
his wrongful death. At the end of the play Antony has another display of honor when he pays respect
to Brutus by saying this was the noblest Roman of them all (5, 5, 74). In this line Antony recognizes
Brutus s integrity. He shows that he has respect for Brutus s character even though he was one of the
conspirators. Antony s honor remains with him for the entire course of the play making it a constant

Political and Economic Liberalism
Political liberalism emphasizes the social contract, in which citizens make the laws and they all agree
to abide by those laws. It is supported on the belief that individuals know what is best for them.
Political liberalism grants political representation to all adult citizens regardless of sex, race, or
financial status. It highlights the rule of law and favors liberal democracy. It works on the principle
that individuals are the foundation of rules and civilization. Furthermore, society and its organizations
are created and subsist to advance the goals and achievements of individuals, devoid of additional
support to elite members of society. Economic liberalism supports the individual rights of personal
property and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We cannot survive without a social contract. There would be constant war because of the development
of men s acquirement of property. Rousseau summarizes this in his Discourse on Political Economy.
You need me, for I am rich and you are poor. Let us come to an agreement between ourselves. I will
permit you to have the honor of serving me, provided you give me what little you have for the trouble
I will be taking to command you. (p. 134) He explains the negative aspects of personal tax and why
political and economic liberalism benefits society. When people feel they are treated well by their
governments, they are more likely to be civil to each other which is why it is necessary for
governments to make sure they maintain individual liberty, peace, security, and property rights, and
their interferences are kept to a bare minimum. John Locke believes there is a natural law, a moral
standard that is intrinsic in the origin of human nature. Humans, being basically good by nature, are
born equal and free, with out the ties of government. Because humans were in essence good, there was
no need of a government. However, as time passed, the need for the benefits of civility became
necessary. It is at this point that people agree to leave the state of nature, and thereby give up their
absolute freedom. Locke focuses mainly on the lack of any natural moral authority of one person over
another. No one is born master, or captain, or chief, of any other

Gibbs Model Of Reflective Report
The topic I m choosing to discuss for this clinical skills assignment is the manual sphygmomanometer
or also known as the manual blood pressure. All nursing students are required to have the ability to
carry out the clinical or practical skill safely (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2008). The reflective
model I will be using for this reflection on this skill is the Gibbs Model of Reflection (1988) which
consists of five elements. They are the descriptions, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an
action plan. The reason why I chose this skill of all other clinical skills is because this blood pressure

of the nursing and midwifery code (2008). I must gain permission from a patient before performing
any clinical procedure and the patient have their rights to reject or disapprove the treatment or care

Saint Brendan s Exploration
Exploration characterized the Renaissance. However, this did not just happen overnight. It all started
in the Middle Ages with a small group of saints. One man, in particular, helped to set this exploration
notion in motion during this time period. The name of this man is Saint Brendan, who is sometimes
referred to as Brandon. He is considered to be the greatest voyager of all the saints, thus he was given
the nickname Saint Brendan the Navigator. Saint Brendan impacted the society of the Middle Ages
through his personal life, his missions work, and his voyage. Saint Brendan was born in Tralee,
County Kerry, Ireland in 484 AD. He was born to parents Finnlug and Cara but he was not raised by
them. When he turned one, he was sent to live at the Killeedy Parish in Newcastle West, County
Limerick, Ireland. There he was educated by Saint Ita who had founded a home for ... Show more

However, they are wrong. During the early 1900 s a group of people started advocating for the
legitimacy of Saint Brendan s journey again. After extensive research, they discovered that Columbus
might have not ever come to America if Saint Brendan had not gone on his journey. It was found that
Columbus used Brendan s journey as a reference to make sure it was even possible to make it across
the Atlantic. This finding would later inspire a man to go on a journey that proved Saint Brendan s
journey was possible. This man was Tim Severin. In 1976, he sailed across the Atlantic from Ireland
to America in a traditional Irish currach, just like the one that Brendan would have used. He made it
across. This showed that the voyage across the Atlantic would indeed have been possible. Now this
does not absolutely prove that Brendan took the trip but it does increase the possibility of it

The Discovery Of Oil And Its Impact On The Environment
The discovery of oil has led to an abundance of new opportunities that have helped people create new
inventions with the biggest being the automobile. Major corporations have arisen from The impact of
oil derived, in large part, from its attractiveness as an energy dense, easily deliverable source of fuel
for transportation. Oil is sometimes coined the term black gold because of its value. Corporations like
Chevron have made billions of dollars in the oil industry. With the rise of oil, the destruction of the
environment has also become a serious issue in some parts of the world. Oil spills that have taken
place in the gulf and in the forests have had a huge impact on both the people and wildlife that have
lived around these affected areas. Black streaks of oil are seen in the sand in some beaches still to this
day and. But these are just some of the major environmental disasters oil companies like Chevron are
responsible for. Chevron has also made an impact on the environment around its refineries, and it is
not a positive impact. The waste that comes out of these refineries is dumped into the ocean, rivers,
and these toxic waste sites severely hurt the environment in the process. One of the biggest issue the
company faces, is with the country of Ecuador where a lawsuit was filed against Texaco, which was
acquired by Chevron in 2001. The corporation was blamed for the mass pollution across the Amazon
after the company left the refineries with mass traces of toxic waste

Personal Finance Spreadsheet
Many Americans do not know how to manage their money and get into debt at an early age. The
American society has accepted the fact of being in debt as normal. Learning how to manage money is
an enormous advantage in life and will prevent debt. To become money smart, make a financial plan
that best suits your lifestyle by using budgeting, saving, and investing. To become successful with
money, the first step that should be taken is setting up a budget. Setting up a budget that makes sure
more isn t spent than earned is the key. The most efficient way to keep track of money is to create a

Credit cards have become the most common way to pay for large purchases; however, using a credit
card means you will be paying more for a purchase due to the interest gained. Simply saving for a
purchase over time, called a sinking fund, will be worth it when the purchase can be completely paid
in cash. Saving up cash has no interest on it, which means a purchase will be cheaper paid in cash than
on a credit card. Establishing a time frame to save up for a specific goal will prevent borrowing
money. One easy way to save money is to put away a certain amount of money into a savings account
every month. Moreover, it s important not to ease up or decrease the amount of money going into the
account. Bank systems have even produced a way to automatically transfer money into the account.
Another important aspect of saving should be to create an emergency fund, but make sure it is separate
from other saving accounts. Emergencies occur in everyone s life and being prepared for whatever life
brings is being one step ahead of the game. Once the monthly expenses are calculated in a budget, it s
a good idea to create an emergency fund containing three to six months worth of expenses. The quote
save for a rainy day is what an emergency fund is for. Saving money takes discipline, but it will help

Adam Goodes Booing In Australia Analysis
Today I would like to speak to you about the article you wrote about the focus on Adam Goodes
recently, and the opinions I have about it. I have very strong feelings about football and I love the
sport. I fully understand the impact of racist comments, but this Goodes booing has blown way out of
proportion from what it really means.
Adam Goodes booing is firstly not about his background and where on this planet he came from. It
has nothing to do with that. He brought that all onto himself by saying that it was all about his
aboriginal background. It is all simply on the way he talks to the crowd and the way that he
communicates to the crowd. Some of the gestures he does and words said can be considered offensive
to the crowd. He knows that it is wrong to do these thing, and what a bad influence it can have on
Australian Rules football.
Not only do these things have a bad influence on AFL but also it has a bad influence on Australia as a
whole. What are people around the world going to think about us if they see the videos or see the
news? They are going to think that we a huge racist country, that has no respect and no one will want

Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD)
Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is among a collection of disorders known as Cluster A personality
disorders that include problems with unusual or eccentric behavior. Individuals with this condition are
extremely paranoid and suspicious of other people and their intentions. This condition is often
diagnosed in early adulthood and generally lasts throughout the person s life.
Causes
The causes of borderline personality disorder are not completely understood, but it is believed that a
person s genetics as well as environment may play a role. It is also more common in people who have
family members diagnosed with Schizophrenia, which may suggest a genetic link.

paranoid behavior. Risperdal (Risperidone), Clozaril (Clozapine) and Seroquel (Quetiapine) and

Treatment Goals There is no cure for PPD, so treatment will probably be constant through the
individual s life as long as they are willing to participate in the treatment. For those who accept the
treatment and put in the effort, they can live a pretty normal life. Those who refuse to be treated will
find it difficult to function socially, including maintaining a job and relationships.

Energy Sources Of Renewable Biomass
I. INTRODUCTION
As an abundant, inexpensive, and renewable as well as environmentally friendly (i.e. CO2 neutral)
energy source, biomass energy has been a particular focus of researcher and policy makers as well as
industries around the world (Chen, 2003). Renewable biomass presents an important research area for
energy source, considering the current global crises of exhaustible sources of energy. Bioenergy is the
4th largest source of energy in the world, and it does not contribute to the global warming through
emissions of CO2 or any other green house gases. Biomass pyrolysis has witnessed exponential
growth in its research and has been investigated extensively in the last few decades, first in the form of
fixed bed reactors and later in the form of moving bed reactors (fluidized bed, auger bed etc). As the
combustion of solid biomass is analogous to the combustion of other solid fuels, such as coal and
waste, essentially the same technology is applicable to all solid fuels, although modifications are
required to handle the high content of moisture and volatiles typically associated with biomass fuels
(Duffy Eaton, 2013). In this paper, which reviews the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of
fixed/moving bed solid gas reactors, biomass pyrolysis, gasification and combustion has been the
focus of the study. Combustion of biomass in the presence of carrier gases like N2 etc has been
extensively studied, with focus being on the numerical or CFD models which have

Analysis of Los Vendidos and Exploitation of Mexican Americans
The short play Los Vendidos portrayed by el Teatro Campesino shows the history of Mexican
Americans. It shows racist perceptions and actions towards Mexican Americans. The title itself
implies the exploitation of Chicanos. In translation from Spanish Vendidos can mean either those who
sell out others, or those who are sold. In the play either meaning can be applied. Those who are sold
would be the eleven different characters that Sancho describes. But, the sell out could be Ms. Jimenez,
a main character, who is the exemplary white washed Mexican American.
The Teatro Campesino was a theater group that originated on the picket lines in Delano in 1965. They

The buying and selling of these people shows the perception of Mexican Americans as property that
can be abused and manipulated.
Ms. Jimenez is the sell out or white washed Mexican American. This is displayed just as the play
begins when she introduces herself. Sancho hears her say her name as Ji mi nez and realizes she is a
Chicana. Excitedly, he starts to speak Spanish to her and pronounces her name in Spanish, Hee me
nez, stressing the second syllable. She corrects him saying that the Spanish pronunciation is not how
her name is pronounced. She quickly makes it apparent that she does not speak Spanish and does not
even want to be know as a Chicana. She rejects her own ethnicity, which is one example of how she is
a sell out. In any instance of such widespread oppression there has always been people who attempt to
hide or reject their own identity so that they might succeed or better survive in the environment of
their oppressors. Many times the oppressed people are taught to feel shameful of their heritage
because the racism is so ingrained in everyday life and culture. In 1924 a Chicano assistant assessor to
Reverend McLean in reporting on Colorado Mexicans, named J.B. Guerrero, reveals his own
resentment towards people who share his own ancestry, The Americans think we [Mexican
Americans] are no good; they class us with this trash that comes over from Mexico; we are greasers

Society s Failure To Achieve The American Dream
The image of an American Dream is that anything can happen. The idea that anyone can be successful
or pursue success. Satisfaction and happiness can be only be attained through the quality of their own
life. Americans were raised in a society that tells them they can be anything they want as an adult. In a
disproportionate American society, success is largely based off of power and financial stability. The
dream, the illusion, is something that hopes to ease the pain of the dry reality that money has taken
over one s happiness. The need to be financially stable has caused society to work in professional
positions that will never satisfy them, that leave them unhappy and unsatisfied. Do to the influence of
money, society has chosen to sacrifice happiness in hopes of the ability to obtaining the American
Dream. People work at jobs they hate to earn an income that will only chase the ever elusive American
Dream illusion. Society today has made the American Dream an illusion driven by a monetary
success. It has made the American standard for everyone to make it big become rich without doing
very little work. Although that one could dream of success, not everyone can be rich and famous; hard
work does not guarantee their success, little work does guarantee their successful either. Successful

Duality In 19th Century Russia
Just to the east of riotous, industrialising Western Europe sat Imperial Russia, pendent between
tradition and modernity, a vast empire of duality. As if trying to vent her frustrations, 19th century
Russia produced a selection of history s finest writers; each writer packing their work with themes of
duplicity, hope, and heavy social criticism.
Duality was the cardinal theme for Imperial Russia. 19th century Russia was a peasant filled, agrarian
empire rushed through the gawky adolescence of industrialisation. The serfs were only freed in 1861,
and by 1900 around 2.3 million Russians worked inside factories: in a century, Russia had moved

The Theme Of Knowledge In Seed By Lisa Heathfield
Seed, a book by Lisa Heathfield, applies the idea that knowledge is power, but ignorance is bliss
through the character development of Pearl, the depth of settings and ambiguity. Seed s narrative
quality explores that knowledge does not always make one influential, however, not acquiring
knowledge is a relieving sensation.
The development of Pearl was highlighted through the narration of the book, explicitly describing how
she felt when Ellis would express his conflicting opinions on Papa S s practices. The narrative of Pearl
conveyed her as an innocent character who was unaware of the good from people outside of her cult,
named Seed. She preferred not to bother herself with teachings other than what Papa S taught the cult.
Nonetheless, her beliefs changed gradually from the appearance of Ellis. He told Pearl about his

The Pros And Cons Of Yogic Practices
Is Yogic practices different from normal exercises?
Yogic practices is not exercise in the sense in which the word exercise is commonly understood. Both
yogic practices and exercises have a common goal or objective, namely health protection and
promotion. However , the effect of yogic practices is not limited to this only. It is expected that
yogapractices should lead to a balanced personality.
Normal exercise routine is focused towards a certain goal, such as losing 10kg or increase push ups
than what you did yesterday. Yoga is to tone the body and calm the mind at the same time.
Regular yoga abhyas develops self confidence, boots vitality and induces a feeling of stability ; it

But even in yoga, we often don t pay much attention to this dimension in our practice.
What brings silence into our practice is making our yoga class a sacred place. But in these days of
mobiles and tablets, many people bring their electronics to their class, and we ve lost that
impermeability. That s disturbing the potential of allowing silence to enter into our practice. We let
ourselves get depleted and then use yoga to try to get us back to neutral. Instead of going from
negative to zero one must try to organize our lives to go from zero to positive. This requires neti, neti ,

High Failure Rate In Healthcare
There are an abundance of issues that contribute to the relatively high failure rate of IT projects in
healthcare. I believe the primary reason for this high failure rate is the complexity of healthcare
including complex and fluid processes and a varied workforce ranging from physician and nurse to lab
technician and aide (Boonstra, Versluis, Vos, 2014). Another significant reason for this failure rate is
the need for a paradigm shift to accept HIT in the healthcare setting and to be open to process
changes/improvements (Shea Belden, 2016; Chiocchio, Rabbat, Lebel, 2015). As a nurse, I can attest
that the overwhelming attitude toward HIT and changes/improvements is poor; nurses appear to like
the status quo. Another issue that significantly contributes to HIT failures is the fact that healthcare is
extremely legislated. All HIT projects need to meet security, confidentiality, and regulatory constraints
(Boonstra et al., 2014). A project may appear relatively successful, for instance, an electronic medical
record is being used to pass medications, and on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The varied workforce often has difficulty with interdisciplinary collaboration regarding projects.
Project management is successful in other industries; therefore, it is a reasonable assumption that it
will work in healthcare; however, due to the healthcare professional s difficulty with project
management concepts, introducing project management into a healthcare organization provides some
challenges. I already discussed that the complexities of healthcare are a primary reason for HIT
failures, and since most healthcare professionals are not well versed in project management, they most
likely will not be the project manager. Therefore, someone without healthcare experience may be
given the role of a project manager which creates

NEOPLASIA
Presented by Dr Abudu Emmanuel Kunle (MBBS, M.Sc, FMCPath) Senior Lecturer and Consultant
Histopathologist University of Uyo Teaching Hospital,Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Neoplasia means the process of new growth whilst Neoplasm means a new growth. Sometimes, the
parenchyma cells stimulate the formation of an abundant collagenous stroma, referred to as
desmoplasia. Some tumours e.g. some cancers of breast are stony hard or scirrhous. Sarcomas have
little connective tissue stroma and so are fleshy. Pseudo tumours: i) An ectopic rest of normal tissue is
sometimes called a choristoma e.g a rest of adrenal cells under the kidney capsule or a pancreatic

Cancer stem cells and cancer cell lineages: cancer stem cells are cells within the tumour that have the
capacity to initiate and sustain the tumour. 3) Local invasion: Benign tumours are usually encapsulated
except haemangioma while malignant tumours can locally invade and destroy the adjacent tissues.
Next to the development of metastases, invasiveness is the most reliable feature that differentiate
malignant from benign Tumours. Carcinoma in situ is best seen in tumour of skin, breast, cervix,
vagina, in which display the cytologic features of malignancy without invasion of the basement
membrane.

metastasize except those of glial cells in CNS (Gliomas), and basal cell carcinoma of the skin but they
are locally invasive. Pathways of spread: i) Seeding of body cavities and surfaces: esp. carcinoma of
ovaries and sometimes mucus secreting appendiceal carcinoma fill the peritoneal cavity with a
gelatinous neoplastic mass referred to as pseudomyxoma peritonei. ii) Lymphatic spread: is the most

Keeping A Dialectic Journal Extremely Mind Opening
I found this experience of keeping a dialectic journal extremely mind opening. I had been keeping a
journal for a few weeks before this assignment began. For those who may not know a dialectic journal
is when for a set number of days a person free writes for a set amount of time, and then for an equal
number or days responds to what they wrote. My focus was supposed to be a tomato, but I quickly
realized that the tomato was only there to begin the conversation. I have always been a person who is
inside their head more often than not, which made some of the entries begin to come from a darker
room within my mind. When I started writing this journal I was okay with the assignment, and it was
fun to come up with the story of Alfredo. Soon after however, my entries started to get more and more
about myself. I jokingly write at one point that if this journal does not end in psych evaluation I did
not do my job correctly , little did I know that the depressive side of my mind would soon bring that
into a possibility. I have bipolar disorder and spend most of the last 4 days writing about it, I found
that putting words on paper helped somewhat. I also found that putting the words on paper became
easier as I wrote more
Writing has always been one of those things that I have had to work at to get words on paper that is
not the case anymore. For some reason just letting myself free write for a couple weeks has suddenly
made it much easier for me to write, and write significantly

Television s Impact On Television
One part of television that has always been a constant in a lot of programs is family. More particular,
the family sitcom and family dramas have been around for years and are still around today. Family
television shows are great programs for everyone due to the fact of being very family oriented.
However, the way families were portrayed when television first started out has changed drastically
with how some families are portrayed now. The evolution of the way families are viewed on screen
and off screen can be portrayed throughout the years on television. One television show that aired
from 1951 1957 was the series I Love Luc. This series was about a husband and a wife and their lives
together. They were a typical family in the 50s. Lucy stayed at home being a housewife at first while
Ricky would go out to work (Smith). The series even showed them sleeping in separate beds at that
time because we as the audience weren t allowed to see a couple sleep in the same bed. Later in the
series, Lucy became pregnant which wasn t a very common thing to show on television, especially at
that time (Garrison).
Typical families shown on television in the 1950s were a mother, father, and their children. One show
that started to break the mold was My Three Sons which premiered in 1960 and aired until 1972. My
Three Sons was about a widowed father raising his three sons on his own with the help of the kids
grandfather (Taflinger). In a matter of only ten years the family sitcom had

Richard Lovelace Research Paper
A poet is before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language, W.H. Auden.
Richard Lovelace was a prominent English poet with many renowned pieces including To Althea,
From Prison, To Lucasta, and Going to Wars. Wether his works were inspired by other poets, politics,
or great love he was and is still known to be one of the greats. Richard Lovelace was born into a
wealthy family in 1618 in Woolwich. He was the eldest of four brothers and three sisters. His brother,
Francis Lovelace, was a defender of Caermarthen in 1644 on the side of King Charles I. His father
was Sir William Lovelace who was born into a traditional military family who owned a chunk of land

Lovelace more than willingly joined Lord Goring and worked his way up the ranks to become captain
at the Bishop Wars. This was just the beginning to a long journey through his political trouble. In 1641
he led a group of men to destroy a petition that was greatly valued since nearly 15,000 people signed
it. He took a great part in trying to suppress Scotts by presenting a Royalist petition to Parliament (this
support of the Royalists eventually financially drained him) and was then imprisoned in Westminster
Gatehouse for six weeks where he completed To Althea, From Prison . After he was released on bail
under the circumstance that he did not get near the House of Commons without permission, he of
course returned to his ways of supporting Royalists and fought at the battle of Dunkirk where he was
captured and imprisoned once again. He also was a part of the political turmoil in 1648. After his last
imprisonment sentence in 1649 the news was broken that the king was executed. His support for the
Royalists was now a lost cause and despite his greatest efforts to support them he was financially
drained by that support and he lived off of charity and died as a broke

Computer Attacks And Its Impact On The Security
Introduction
With the rising evolution of businesses, the evolution of business and institution data security has also
evolved exceptionally. Various data security methods have been devised to ensure that vulnerability is
mitigated but at the same time cyber criminals such as hackers have also evolved their data hacking
methods as they look for the least weaknesses in a company and exploit it. The essay looks into
various trends that have emerged in ensuring that data is safe by institution, the most vulnerable spots
for various companies have been looked into too. When it comes to security of mobile devices and
wireless networks, their security perspectives have been looked into in addition to the way the existing
companies are protecting themselves from computer attacks.
Trends in Security Network
There has been developed even more severe and dynamic viruses that are used to hack various
institution. A very good example is that of the Stuxnet virus believed to have been penetrated to the
Iranian institutions by an adversary (unsubstantially claimed to be Israel or U.S.A) that is able to
penetrate various Iranian systems and control their nuclear reactors, destroy oil pipelines and so on.
The Iranian government has not been able to counter this virus as it is extensively dynamic and
utilizes system weakness points or holes known as zero days. It has been used to shut more than a

The Symbolism Of The Conch
Rykr Templeton
Mrs. Swaninger
Period 1
1 May 2017
The Symbolism of the Conch
For centuries philosophers, have debated the question of whether man is naturally evil. William
Golding poses this question in his novel Lord of the Flies. Set on a tropical island during World War
II, the novel begins when schoolboys from Great Britain are being flown to safety and their plane is
shot down. No adults survive, and the boys are left to control themselves and get rescued. The boys
find a conch, which is a symbol of power and authority to whoever has it in his possession. William
Golding uses symbolism in the form of the conch to represent the concept of society. Throughout the
course of the novel, the boys developing relationship with the conch ... Show more content on

When the boys first start a fire on top of the mountain, Piggy holds the conch and attempts to speak.
But Jack scolds him by saying, The conch doesn t count on top of the mountain, so you shut up
(Golding 39). Boys like Jack begin to place restrictions on the conch and lose respect for it and for one
another. Then one day at an assembly, Jack places even less importance on the conch excluding more
of the boys and weakening the equal order and authority that the conch provides. Jack says, We don t
need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things...It s time some people knew they ve got
to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us (Golding 92). Jack s statement here clearly
connects the end of the conch to a change in the social order. Jack is slowly becoming a power hungry
dictator, and the orderly influence of the conch is replaced by man s evil desires. In the end, the conch
loses significance to all but Piggy, and most of the boys turn into evil savages. Piggy tells Ralph to call
an assembly, and Ralph only laughs. Finally, after Piggy glasses are stolen, Piggy tells Ralph, Blow
the conch, blow as loud as you can. The forest echoed; and birds lifted, crying out of the treetops, as
on that first morning ages ago (Golding 154). Piggy believes that the authority of the conch will once
again bring the boys together, but only four boys meet in this assembly. The rest have joined Jack s
savage tribe.

The 3rd Tuesdays With Morrie
Super Summarizer: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (Week 4, pages 60 to 79)
Title: The Third Tuesday, We Talk About Dependence
Throughout pages 60 to 79 of Tuesdays with Morrie , the story touches upon the topics of trust,
nostalgia (a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past), and affection; topics that require us
to rely on something or someone and teach us the important of dependency.
In the chapter The Second Tuesday , Morrie teaches his class about trust through an activity where We
are to stand, facing away from our classmates, and fall back ward, replying on another student to catch
us (Albom, 60). The moral of this activity is to teach us how and who to trust, as evident in the
following passage. Sometimes you cannot believe what you see, you have to believe what you feel.
And if you are ever going to have other people trust you, you must feel that you can trust them, too
even when you re in the dark. Even when you re falling (61). Morrie is teaching us that to depend on
someone, we must not judge them by their appearance or skill. ... Show more content on

Type 1 Diabetes Personal Narrative
My life wouldn t be considered normal. My parents were immigrants from Pakistan trying to create a
better life for them and their children, and they re the only ones from their families to move to
America. They moved from New York, to Richardson, and lastly to Rockwall, Texas in 2005. I was
born in 2000 but when events in my life truly started shaping me was in the summer of 2004.
The summer of 2004 is when I got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, it was very shocking for my
family except for me, I still didn t completely understand what I had. All I knew was that the poking
and pricking with different sized needles was painful. Eventually I began to learn what Type 1
Diabetes really was, and even though i had it, it didn t slow me down, I focused on my academics and
when it affected me I addressed and fixed the problem and went back to work. I also didn t let it slow
down my physical activities either, I would be outside every single day as kid non stop, also in middle
school I joined gymnastics as well and pursued it until the start of my junior year of high school.
Diabetes affected my way of life, it made me different than everyone else and could ve slowed me
down but I didn t let it, I still participated in different activities that everyone else did.

  • 2. The Dawn Of Retinal Prosthetic Devices The Dawn of Retinal Prosthetic Devices The war against human blindness has been ongoing affair since the beginning of time. Because the origin of blindness varies from case to case, there is no single remedy and limited solutions are available to the visually impaired. However, recent technological breakthroughs have allowed scientists and doctors to test out possible solutions to a particular niche in the blindness spectrum: degenerative retinal diseases. Degenerative retinal diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) attack the retina exclusively. Because of that exclusivity, the other structures in the eye are typically not compromised. Therefore, the use of a retinal implant or prosthetic device to restore functional vision is possible. While it is important to note that retinal implants are still a pioneering technology, clinical trials such as the Argus II clinical trial, and eye health care professionals alike are reporting promising results. As such, it seems likely that retinal prosthetic devices will be a game changer in the future treatment of degenerative retinal diseases since the devices can restore a form of vision to an otherwise blind patient. Retina and Retinal Disease The retina is a very delicate and thin layer in the back eye that helps with vision. It is light sensitive and ...acts like the film in a camera. • 3. Loyalty In Julius Caesar In Shakespeare s play, Julius Caesar, the character Mark Antony remains the same throughout the play making him a static character. Antony s character has a wide variety of character traits but most of them remain unchanged throughout the play. And so even though Antony is a well rounded character he is still static because his many character traits remain the same. Some examples of Antony s traits that remain constant are his loyalty to Caesar, his manipulative behavior, his selfishness, and his honor. Antony is loyal to Caesar from the beginning of the play through the end of it. He shows his loyalty to Caesar at the beginning of the play when he says I shall remember: when Caesar says do this, it is perform d. (1, 2, 93). When Antony says this he is only responding to Caesar s request to touch his wife Calphurnia as he runs past in a race but this still shows Antony s willingness to follow what Caesar says. When Antony says this he is essentially stating that he is willing to follow any order that Caesar gives him to demonstrate his loyalty. Antony demonstrates his loyalty again later in the play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His first display of honor was when after Caesar was killed he vowed to seek revenge by saying domestic fury and civil strife will cumber all the parts of Italy (3, 1, 278 279). Antony believes that a civil war is what is needed to stop the conspirators from gaining power and to avenge Caesar s death. This part of the play shows that Antony is honorable because he is respecting his friend by avenging his wrongful death. At the end of the play Antony has another display of honor when he pays respect to Brutus by saying this was the noblest Roman of them all (5, 5, 74). In this line Antony recognizes Brutus s integrity. He shows that he has respect for Brutus s character even though he was one of the conspirators. Antony s honor remains with him for the entire course of the play making it a constant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is supported on the belief that individuals know what is best for them. Political liberalism grants political representation to all adult citizens regardless of sex, race, or financial status. It highlights the rule of law and favors liberal democracy. It works on the principle that individuals are the foundation of rules and civilization. Furthermore, society and its organizations are created and subsist to advance the goals and achievements of individuals, devoid of additional support to elite members of society. There would be constant war because of the development of men s acquirement of property. Rousseau summarizes this in his Discourse on Political Economy. You need me, for I am rich and you are poor. Let us come to an agreement between ourselves. I will permit you to have the honor of serving me, provided you give me what little you have for the trouble I will be taking to command you. (p. 134) He explains the negative aspects of personal tax and why political and economic liberalism benefits society. When people feel they are treated well by their governments, they are more likely to be civil to each other which is why it is necessary for governments to make sure they maintain individual liberty, peace, security, and property rights, and their interferences are kept to a bare minimum. John Locke believes there is a natural law, a moral standard that is intrinsic in the origin of human nature. Humans, being basically good by nature, are born equal and free, with out the ties of government. Because humans were in essence good, there was no need of a government. However, as time passed, the need for the benefits of civility became necessary. It is at this point that people agree to leave the state of nature, and thereby give up their absolute freedom. Locke focuses mainly on the lack of any natural moral authority of one person over another. No one is born master, or captain, or chief, of any other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All nursing students are required to have the ability to carry out the clinical or practical skill safely (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2008). The reflective model I will be using for this reflection on this skill is the Gibbs Model of Reflection (1988) which consists of five elements. They are the descriptions, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan. One man, in particular, helped to set this exploration notion in motion during this time period. The name of this man is Saint Brendan, who is sometimes referred to as Brandon. He is considered to be the greatest voyager of all the saints, thus he was given the nickname Saint Brendan the Navigator. Saint Brendan impacted the society of the Middle Ages through his personal life, his missions work, and his voyage. Saint Brendan was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland in 484 AD. It was found that Columbus used Brendan s journey as a reference to make sure it was even possible to make it across the Atlantic. This finding would later inspire a man to go on a journey that proved Saint Brendan s journey was possible. This man was Tim Severin. In 1976, he sailed across the Atlantic from Ireland to America in a traditional Irish currach, just like the one that Brendan would have used. He made it across. This showed that the voyage across the Atlantic would indeed have been possible. Now this does not absolutely prove that Brendan took the trip but it does increase the possibility of it ... The Discovery Of Oil And Its Impact On The Environment The discovery of oil has led to an abundance of new opportunities that have helped people create new inventions with the biggest being the automobile. Major corporations have arisen from The impact of oil derived, in large part, from its attractiveness as an energy dense, easily deliverable source of fuel for transportation. Oil is sometimes coined the term black gold because of its value. Corporations like Chevron have made billions of dollars in the oil industry. With the rise of oil, the destruction of the environment has also become a serious issue in some parts of the world. Oil spills that have taken place in the gulf and in the forests have had a huge impact on both the people and wildlife that have lived around these affected areas. Black streaks of oil are seen in the sand in some beaches still to this day and. But these are just some of the major environmental disasters oil companies like Chevron are responsible for. Credit cards have become the most common way to pay for large purchases; however, using a credit card means you will be paying more for a purchase due to the interest gained. Saving up cash has no interest on it, which means a purchase will be cheaper paid in cash than on a credit card. Establishing a time frame to save up for a specific goal will prevent borrowing money. One easy way to save money is to put away a certain amount of money into a savings account every month. Moreover, it s important not to ease up or decrease the amount of money going into the account. Bank systems have even produced a way to automatically transfer money into the account. Another important aspect of saving should be to create an emergency fund, but make sure it is separate from other saving accounts. I have very strong feelings about football and I love the sport. I fully understand the impact of racist comments, but this Goodes booing has blown way out of proportion from what it really means. Adam Goodes booing is firstly not about his background and where on this planet he came from. It has nothing to do with that. He brought that all onto himself by saying that it was all about his aboriginal background. It is all simply on the way he talks to the crowd and the way that he communicates to the crowd. Some of the gestures he does and words said can be considered offensive to the crowd. He knows that it is wrong to do these thing, and what a bad influence it can have on Australian Rules football. Not only do these things have a bad influence on AFL but also it has a bad influence on Australia as a whole. • 11. Energy Sources Of Renewable Biomass I. INTRODUCTION As an abundant, inexpensive, and renewable as well as environmentally friendly (i.e. CO2 neutral) energy source, biomass energy has been a particular focus of researcher and policy makers as well as industries around the world (Chen, 2003). Renewable biomass presents an important research area for energy source, considering the current global crises of exhaustible sources of energy. Bioenergy is the 4th largest source of energy in the world, and it does not contribute to the global warming through emissions of CO2 or any other green house gases. Biomass pyrolysis has witnessed exponential growth in its research and has been investigated extensively in the last few decades, first in the form of fixed bed reactors and later in the form of moving bed reactors (fluidized bed, auger bed etc). As the combustion of solid biomass is analogous to the combustion of other solid fuels, such as coal and waste, essentially the same technology is applicable to all solid fuels, although modifications are required to handle the high content of moisture and volatiles typically associated with biomass fuels (Duffy Eaton, 2013). In this paper, which reviews the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of fixed/moving bed solid gas reactors, biomass pyrolysis, gasification and combustion has been the focus of the study. Combustion of biomass in the presence of carrier gases like N2 etc has been extensively studied, with focus being on the numerical or CFD models which have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is displayed just as the play begins when she introduces herself. Sancho hears her say her name as Ji mi nez and realizes she is a Chicana. Excitedly, he starts to speak Spanish to her and pronounces her name in Spanish, Hee me nez, stressing the second syllable. She corrects him saying that the Spanish pronunciation is not how her name is pronounced. She quickly makes it apparent that she does not speak Spanish and does not even want to be know as a Chicana. She rejects her own ethnicity, which is one example of how she is a sell out. In any instance of such widespread oppression there has always been people who attempt to hide or reject their own identity so that they might succeed or better survive in the environment of their oppressors. Many times the oppressed people are taught to feel shameful of their heritage because the racism is so ingrained in everyday life and culture. Satisfaction and happiness can be only be attained through the quality of their own life. Americans were raised in a society that tells them they can be anything they want as an adult. In a disproportionate American society, success is largely based off of power and financial stability. Seed s narrative quality explores that knowledge does not always make one influential, however, not acquiring knowledge is a relieving sensation. The development of Pearl was highlighted through the narration of the book, explicitly describing how she felt when Ellis would express his conflicting opinions on Papa S s practices. The narrative of Pearl conveyed her as an innocent character who was unaware of the good from people outside of her cult, named Seed. She preferred not to bother herself with teachings other than what Papa S taught the cult. Nonetheless, her beliefs changed gradually from the appearance of Ellis. • 19. High Failure Rate In Healthcare There are an abundance of issues that contribute to the relatively high failure rate of IT projects in healthcare. I believe the primary reason for this high failure rate is the complexity of healthcare including complex and fluid processes and a varied workforce ranging from physician and nurse to lab technician and aide (Boonstra, Versluis, Vos, 2014). Another significant reason for this failure rate is the need for a paradigm shift to accept HIT in the healthcare setting and to be open to process changes/improvements (Shea Belden, 2016; Chiocchio, Rabbat, Lebel, 2015). As a nurse, I can attest that the overwhelming attitude toward HIT and changes/improvements is poor; nurses appear to like the status quo. Another issue that significantly contributes to HIT failures is the fact that healthcare is extremely legislated. All HIT projects need to meet security, confidentiality, and regulatory constraints (Boonstra et al., 2014). Family television shows are great programs for everyone due to the fact of being very family oriented. However, the way families were portrayed when television first started out has changed drastically with how some families are portrayed now. The evolution of the way families are viewed on screen and off screen can be portrayed throughout the years on television. One television show that aired from 1951 1957 was the series I Love Luc. The series even showed them sleeping in separate beds at that time because we as the audience weren t allowed to see a couple sleep in the same bed. Later in the series, Lucy became pregnant which wasn t a very common thing to show on television, especially at that time (Garrison). Typical families shown on television in the 1950s were a mother, father, and their children. One show that started to break the mold was My Three Sons which premiered in 1960 and aired until 1972. • 31. Type 1 Diabetes Personal Narrative My life wouldn t be considered normal. My parents were immigrants from Pakistan trying to create a better life for them and their children, and they re the only ones from their families to move to America. They moved from New York, to Richardson, and lastly to Rockwall, Texas in 2005. I was born in 2000 but when events in my life truly started shaping me was in the summer of 2004. I also didn t let it slow down my physical activities either, I would be outside every single day as kid non stop, also in middle school I joined gymnastics as well and pursued it until the start of my junior year of high school. Diabetes affected my way of life, it made me different than everyone else and could ve slowed me down but I didn t let it, I still participated in different activities that everyone else did. People who helped me along the trip of learning how to deal with diabetes, as well as my life so far, included my three sisters. I ve spent almost all of my life with them, and they ve influenced me heavily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They affected me so much to make me who I am.
