Victorian Influence on Women s Fashions Essay
Before Research
Before the Victorian Era, the main focus of fashion was for men. Women s fashion changed
some, but the general idea of long skirts, tight bodices, and heavy fabrics stayed consistent. Real
changes to style and fashion were not made until about the 1840 s, when Queen Victoria came
into power. After her rise to Queen, the fashions began to change dramatically. Pride and
Prejudice is a book written in this time, and the fashion is clearly visible. Looking at fashion of
the time can be clear examples of social customs, role models, and other aspects of the time period.
The question to start off with is how has royalty affected women s fashions through the ages?
Royalty is influential on all sorts of things, so why not fashion? ... Show more content on

The beginning of the civil war in America affected the cotton production, so fabric became more
scarce, leading into the next era, one that used less fabric. The early bustle period featured a
narrower skirt, with gathered fabric on the back. Bodices ended at the natural waist. By 1877, the
bustles had dropped to knees, leading into the Natural Form period. By this time, a tall, slim figure
was born. Dresses were long and the bodice became long and tight. The Late bustle period
brought the bustle back into style. The skirts stayed long and tight, with a large amount of fabric
gathered in the back. The 1890 s saw the disappearance of the bustle for good. At this time, skirts
became plain, and the bodice was dressed up with frills and puffed sleeves. The popular Pigeon
Silhouette of the Victorian era was born. The Edwardian Period was a time of ultimate femininity.
The skirts became soft and flowing, and the hobble skirt became popular (What is). This was
probably the most interesting part of my research, because I got a deeper look into the world of
fashion.
The Queen s Fashion
I now needed to know what Queen Victoria did for fashion in this time period. I learned through
my next source that Queen Victoria and her daughters were often fashion models for women of
this period. Typical outfits of this time consisted of cotton fabrics, as they were in abundant supply
and allowed air into the often heavy fabrics. Day dresses were worn inside the home, and were

The Effects Of Dementia On The Brain Essay
Usually in chronic or progressive nature, Dementia is a syndrome where there is a deterioration
in one s cognitive function. Which is dramatically greater than normal cognitive deterioration
expected from normal aging. It is caused by a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the
brain, such as a stroke or Alzheimer s disease, 60 70% of cases are contributed to Alzheimer s.
Dementia affects memory, comprehension, calculation, language, judgment, thinking, and
learning capacity. This is devastating on the person affected and also the family of the person
affected and can commonly lead to deterioration in emotional control, motivation, and social
behavior. Worldwide, it is estimated that 47.5 million people are living with dementia, 7.7
million new cases every year, and it is estimated that 75.6 million will be affected in 2030.
Dementia is damage of nerve cells in several areas of the brain and affects people differently
based on the location of the damaged nerve cells. The type of dementia is usually grouped by
what they have in common, as in the area of the brain affected or whether they are progressive
(worsen over time). There also some dementias that are caused by a reaction to medications or
vitamin deficiencies and can possibly improve with treatment. Progressive dementias that progress
over time and are not reversible and have causes that are currently unknown but, over time, science
might be able to pinpoint a direct cause. Alzheimer s disease is the most

The Secret Lives of The Brain
PART I. Incognito: The Secret Lives of The Brain, was very straight forward and extremely
intriguing. As David Eagleman, a neuroscientist, elaborates on the American criminal justice
system, he brings out important factors that I believe everyone should be focusing on in this
country. He states that our actions are not only made up by our unconscious mind, but the way we
perceive things is controlled by our unconscious ability to even realize we are controlling it. The
conscious mind not only represents only a small part of our brain activity and function, but it also
perceives certain behaviors differently when constructed with drugs or damage The process of the
unconscious brain activity differs from the conscious part but they both... Show more content on

David Eagleman explained in detail how the cognitive brain works and what factors play a part
in the thought process. He did so by picking apart different segments of the brain and describing
what developmental processes it goes through when obtaining thought and language. I would
definitely recommend this book to other people if they want to better understand how people
think, act, and behave. When certain things are skewed in the brain, it reacts in many different
ways. Whether that be poorly or very highly. It depends on what factors are brought upon the
brain and what that specific part of the brain takes in. Eagleman does a fantastic job explaining
with good humor how the thought process comes about. Without our cognitive ability to think
and act, there would be no personality or knowledge on this earth. I believe that the book was
sort of well organized in that Eagleman did a good job of pairing together segments of the brain
and explaining how they work together or as a whole. But, I did however, think that Eagleman
jumped around a lot and didn t seem very clear in some parts. For instance, when he would talk
about how the conscious mind is just the tip of the iceberg in the brain, then what is the rest of the
brain doing? He goes into detail about the conscious and unconscious brain, but what about the
subconscious part? It s crazy to think that our body can react to certain stimuli and situations before
we even realize that we need to act upon

Juvenile Offenders System
From an historical perspective, having a legal framework that consists of juvenile offenders is
comparatively low (Elrod Ryder, 2011). Throughout history, children who are as young as seven
years old who may have been accused of doing wrong were imprisoned together with adults. In the
nineteenth century the whole idea of reforming young offenders systems took root all over the
United Statesand the house of Refugee found in the New York that opened in the 1824 became the
first juvenile house. This one became the first house of juvenile offenders to be established in a
separate facility and other states for example Maryland soon followed law suit (Harvey, 2011).

Athletes Should Get Equal Pay

How Social Reformers Influenced Edward Bellamy, Henry...
How did social reformers such as Edward Bellamy, Henry George, and the Knights of Labor
conceive of liberty and freedom differently than the proponents of the liberty of contract and
laissez faire like Herbert Spencer and Andrew Carnegie? Which of these groups was successful in
imposing their vision on the larger society in the years before the turn of the century? Why?
Introduction
Liberty and freedom was conceived differently by the social reformers and the proponents of the
liberty of contract and laissez faire. The difference actually emanated in the manner in which the
two groups interpreted the suitability of the operation of the economy. While the economy can
operate on the basis of capitalism where individualism and private property are the basis of creating
wealth, it can also operate on the basis of collectivity, where communism and pooling of the
labor and output together forms the basis of wealth accumulation for the society. In this respect,
the social reformers such as Edward Bellamy, Henry George, and the Knights of Labor conceived
the freedom and liberty to entail the rights of the laborers to earn better wages, work for a few
hours and have a legal tender mechanism from the government that was not under the control of
the banks . On the other hand, the proponents of the liberty of contract and laissez faire like
Herbert Spencer and Andrew Carnegie conceived the liberty and freedom to entail individualism
and private property ownership as the basis of

From Spaniard And Indian Summary
By the late eighteenth century, the New World, which was still remote, had formed its own
complicated individual and national identities. Moreover, the disparate communities within Latin
America had established a unique culture characterized by its hybridity. A close reading of
Ignacio de Castro s From Spaniard and Indian, a Mestizo is born and Agostino Brunias s Planter
and His Wife with a Servant reveals the racial hierarchy that formed amid Latin America s
hybridity. Additionally, both objects specifically express Latin American hybridity for a white,
European class, likely as a means to demystify and boost the standing of the New World.

Beam Hammer Essay
DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF BEAM HAMMER
Abstract
Beam hammer is a device which works on the principle of beam engine or inversion of four bar
mechanism. Cast iron plates are used to construct the rigid beam engine mechanism which is one
of the applications of four bar chain. The wooden bed is used to absorb the vibrations caused
while operating the system. Nuts and bolts are made up of carbon steel which is capable of
withstand deformation while reciprocating motion takes place. The hammer and the work rest are
made up of mild steel because while hammer hitting the work piece deformation occurs both in the
hammer and the work rest. To prevent the deformation, the mild steel is chosen in our project.
When the crank is rotated, according to the beam engine mechanism it is converted into
reciprocating motion on the other side through inversion of four bar mechanism, is achieved a
prescribed hammering action on the cast iron work piece.
1. Introduction
1.1 Beam Engine Mechanism
It is based on four bar chain mechanism. The function of the mechanism is to convert the rotary
motion of the crank into reciprocating motion [1]. In this mechanism, when the crank AB rotates
about the fixed centre A, the lever CDE oscillates about the centre D and the end of the lever E is
connected to a piston rod which reciprocates in the cylinder as shown in Figure 1.
Rigid material is used to withstand deformation and vibration caused by the lever for designing the
beam of the mechanism [7].

Charlemagne s Efforts to Unify Christianity Essay
During the beginning of Charlemagne s imperial reign, the Church was full of inconsistencies and
unorthodox practices. Clergy from different areas practiced the faith in different ways because
many of the texts they used were badly translated and contained errors.1 Charlemagne would
receive letters, detailing monks prayers, that contained both correct thoughts and uncouth
expressions 2 He was worried that if they could not write correctly, then they might be
misinterpreting the bibleand God would not be honored. Many of the common people could not
distinguish between religion and superstition, which would allow absurd beliefs to become
accepted.3 Unorthodox practices like naked people walking around with chains claiming to be doing

The decisions passed by this council would then be published in the form of a capitulary, in order
to carry the full force of law. These capitularies unified the empire by establishing orthodoxy among
churches and identifying the correct way to live a christian life; however, Charlemagne also need to
improve education so the common person could understand and interpret the laws correctly.
The education of the Frankish Empire was almost nonexistent so the first step Charlemagne made
was simply encouraging intellectual curiosity and learning. He gathered many wise men to his
court, including Alcuin, Peter of pisa, Paulinus, Theodulf, and Agobard. They encompassed diverse
fields like grammarian, historian, poet, theologian, and came from far away places like Italy, Spain,
and Ireland.7 Charlemagne highly valued their wisdom and would reward them lavishly with
money and property such as abbeys.8 with these great men, Charlemagne set up the first school at
his palace to teach reading, writing, and the scriptures. One story by Mayke de Jong, gives an
illustration of just how much Charlemagne valued education. While inspecting the school,
Charlemagne put the hardworking pupils on his right and the lazy ones on his left symbolizing
eternal judgement.9 He made no distinction between rank, but many of the lower ranked pupils

Many Hondurans fantasize of a lavish life in American. The sad truth is, is that is only a fantasy.
Very few will make it rich in America, and that was true for Lourdes and Enrique. In America,
Lourdes works a series of menial jobs that are continually disappearing. She lives in a small
trailer and can never seem to raise enough money to have her children smuggled over the border.
There are many reasons why the poverty population in Honduras is exorbitant. These reasons can
be explained in a macro, micro, and mezzo way. According to Gamble (2013), the practice of
macro social work involves intervening in large systems to help clients (Gamble, 2013). Honduras
has an extremely corrupt government. The country is as poor as it is violent. In the film, The Other
Side of Immigration (2009), citizens were interviewed and asked about their feelings on their
government. One man said that he does not trust his government. He also stated that he will not
take part in any strikes against the government because he feels that it will do no good (Germano,
2009). Sadly, it is apparent that the majority of the population feel this way. How is a country
supposed to flourish without the backing and the security of their own government? The poor
neighborhoods of Honduras can be just as corrupt as their government. Many neighborhoods in
Honduras, including the neighborhood that Lourdes and Enrique grew

Personal Trainers Research Paper
Personal trainers are trainers for a reason. They know how to transform the body with good
nutrition and exercise. The average person does not have the knowledge needed to correlate their
fitness program with diet. As a result, mistakes are often made and those mistakes hinder progress.
Diet and exercise go hand in hand and there must be a balance. That balance is where our weekly
nutritiontip comes in. Check it out.
Nutrition Tip
This time let s talk fat. Yes, fat. When someone wants to lose weight or achieve a more defined
physical physique they immediately think, I have to eliminate the fat from my diet . Of course
dietary fat should be consumed in moderation but it is needed. The only dietary fat in any meal
plan must be healthy fats. This means monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and omega 3
fatty acids. For most, 20% of their diet should be fat and the remaining 80% will be protein and
complex carbs. When good fats are consumed not only do they deliver endless benefits to the body
like lowering bad cholesterol levels and strengthening the immune system but they actually assist in
fat burn. Healthy fats do this by decreasing cortisol levels (a cause of belly fat) and conditions the
body to burn fat more efficiently.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Capitalism And Capitalism Essay
In today s society, each and every one of use has a different view on what capitalism is and what
freedom is. As we went through this section we focused on different writing that covered
capitalism and freedom and the cultural view on each aspect. While all focused on these aspects
they all had their own view on what each was and what utopian society would be like for each
and everyone. From all of these documents we get a wider picture of what one person in one
certain culture views freedom versus what another culture views as freedom. Looking back onto
the texts that we have discussed the most prominent documents that we looked into that really
spoke to the true meaning of freedom and capitalism lays with Friedrich Hayek s work in The
Road to Serfdom, The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, and the Communist Manifesto by Karl
Marxand Friedrich Engels. All three works focus on capitalism and freedom but everyone has a
different view of what those look like to them.
Starting with The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek, we see that socialism is only possible if
freedom is taken into account. WIthout focusing on the aspects of freedom such as Positive and
Negative Freedoms, it would not be possible to work as a society if we did not focus on the God
given freedoms that are placed in every society. Throughout this document we see that the German
government in my perspective couldn t agree on certain plans and regulations that ultimately lead
to the rise of the dictatorship under Hitler. This view on capitalism that is perceived in this text is
one that the United States has been slowly creeping toward but we have never felt it rapidly
enough to notice what is actually happening. As we slowly creep into the future, more regulations
and more restrictions are from just as it happened in German. The main focus of this text was what
went wrong in Germany and the relationship that was shown between socialism and fascism. Also
this text focuses on the different parts of planning Вќ that occurred and how these different types of
planning ultimately affected the German societies. Also in this document we learned about rule of
law. Rule of law tells use that a law should govern a nation and not having one individual

The Theory Of Attachment Proposed By John Bowlby And Mary...
The lectures, discussions in class, and chapter readings highlighted the importance of one of the
characteristics of human nature, which is relationships and attachment. The course materials
emphasized the critical role of relationship and attachment to the development of the children. The
internship site also provided an opportunity for me to visualize different attachments and
relationships between parent and child in action. As the chapter readings from the textbook explore
different perspectives of relationship and attachment proposed by various theorists, the class
discussions and lectures furthered my understanding and knowledge of parent child relationships.
In chapter 3, the theory of attachment proposed by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth is explored.
First, Bowlby s theory of attachment was influenced by the ethological theorist, Darwin, Lorenz,
and Tinbergen, who were previously mentioned in the chapter. Bowlby emphasized that behaviors
found in animals, such as seeking close proximity from mothers to reduce the chance of becoming a
prey, can also be found in toddlers. For example, Bowlby defined that actions such as following,
crying out, and clinging found in children are displayed in order to keep close distance to parents is
called attachment behaviors. Bowlby incorporates imprinting and instincts, which are ethological
terms, to explain different phases of attachment. As the child develops through time, the attachment
of child and parent deepens their

This helps them (the students) strive for a better and more in depth schooling on their favorite

Hickam s teacher, Miss. Riley, only wants to inspire her students, even if it is just one student;
and she does so. She sees Homer for what he could do and not for what he should do, as most

many want to help aid students in further education or spark interest that maybe some students have

Book Report On The Book Le Gai Savoir
I remember the first time I heard about Nietzsche was a few years ago, in my chemistry class. I
had a friend who spent all his time, in science classes, reading books about philosophy. His
nonconformity caught my attention. I started to be interested by the big mustache of the author
on the cover page of his book Le Gai Savoir, because I knew, of course, that all authors with big
mustache such as Victor Hugo and Albert Einstein wrote about great things! So I started to read
Nietzsche s works. Then, one day, my dad caught me reading Le Gai Savoir and he told me that
this philosopher, born in a town near Leipzig on 15 October 1844 (Wotling 797), had changed
the way he perceived his life. He told me that when he was eighteen in China, he was very poor
and due to his stressful condition, he failed the final admission exam for a university. Because of
the high amount of population and competition in China, the final exam decides unfortunately
the fate of a person. He had developed depression. However, one day, he bought a Nietzsche s
book and started to read it. He told me that Nietzsche s poetry and positive ideas motivated him
to change his life, to be greater, and to become who [he really is] (Nietzsche, Le Gai Savoir 251).
And this is why he wasn t afraid of immigrating to Canada with my mother. In this essay, I will

but the novel Life of Pi as well as the movie Shutter Island encourage us to look deeper within

one idea that these two works explore. What are they exactly about though? Life of Pi, a novel by
Yann Martelpublished in 2001, is about a sixteen year old Indian boy named Piscine Molitor Patel

It was therefore with this quotation that readers discovered that Pi s alter ego was Richard
Parker. In Shutter Island, Andrew also created an alter ego for himself. His alter ego was a man
named Edward Daniels, which was an anagram for Andrew Laeddis. As with Life of Pi, this alter
ego was not revealed to the viewers of the film until the end when Andrew faced Dr. Cawley in
the lighthouse. Dr. Cawley said, The names have the same letters. Edward Daniels has exactly
the same thirteen letters as Andrew Laeddis, the same as Rachel Solando and Dolores Chanal.
The names are anagrams for each other. In that moment, it became evident that Andrew had
created an alter ego for himself. The next similarity between the two works in relation to alter
ego is the fact that the main characters both used their alter egos to distance themselves from the
acts they committed. In Life of Pi, Pi used his alter ego to cover up his killing of the cook during
the journey on the lifeboat. Pi did this because he could not believe that he allowed himself to
stoop down to such low levels in order to kill a man. He expressed this when he said (referring to
the cook), He was such an evil man. Worse still, he met evil in me selfishness, anger, ruthlessness.

Therefore it was hard to believe that Lands End could maintain its competitive advantage through
just use of superior technology. Maturing growth in the USA and abroad had forced the company
to reduce its number of catalog pages and mail fewer books. Lands End was reaching logical
limitations of what the catalog could do for them
The last key issue was the company s decision to be acquired by Sears at $1.9 billion where it
had the exclusive right to sell Lands End product in its retail stores. This new horizontal
integration had left a big question on whether Lands End will be able to earn profits under this
new organization and whether any conflict will arise with this new establishment. At that time
the company was facing declining sales in catalogs and already was in talks with Sears in the
previous years believing that the retail stores would be a key addition to the platform for selling
its products. The retail stores would be used to showcase the Lands End products and if any
product found unsatisfactory through catalog and online purchase could be returned through these
stores as well. There were a number of key decisions that were needed to be made in order to
ensure a successful future of Lands End. The first was that should Lands End continues to partner
with ASI as they had started providing similar services to Lands End competitor and helping them
achieve a much cheaper and better product. Currently ASI

The Importance Of Image Analysis
Mohammed El Helly et al. [8] proposed an approach for integrating image analysis technique into
diagnostic expert system. A diagnostic model was used to manage cucumber crop. According to
this approach, an expert system finds out the diseases of user observation. In order to diagnose a
disorder from a leaf image, five image processingphases are used: image acquisition, enhancement,
and segmentation, feature extraction and classification. Images were captured using a high
resolution color camera and auto focus illumination light. Firstly they transformed the defected

Algorithms for selecting useful texture features were developed by using stepwise discriminant
analysis. They developed four models i.e. HSI_39, HSI_15, HS_10 and I_11. Classification was
done by minimum distance classifier. The model using 15 selected HSI texture features got the best
classification accuracy (95.6%), which recommended that it would be best to use a reduced hue,
saturation and intensity texture feature set to differentiate orange diseases. The HSI_15 model,
I_11 and HSI_39 models achieved classification accuracy 95.6%, 81.11% and 95.6% respectively.
Bauer et al. [10] developed algorithms for the automatic classification of leaf diseases based on
stereo and high resolution multispectral images. Leaves of sugar beet were used in this
method. Sugar beet leaves might be infected by several diseases. In controlled light laboratory
environment, They collected stereo images of single sugar beet leaves by RGB and
multispectral cameras. The leaves were either healthy or infected from diseases such as rusts,
powdery mildew and Cercospora leaf spot. They generated 3 D models of the leaves to fuse
information from the two cameras. Classification is done by k nearest neighbour and an adaptive
Bayes method. The classification accuracy achieved were 91% for Cercospora leaf spots and 86%
for rust disease.

A Research On Animal Farm
Animal Farm The term: Organic deduces via natural resource there s only so much organic matter,
because organic matter is determined what has decayed and at what amount for centuries. As our
populace grows, the right kind of organic matter diminishes, there lies the problem. Here s the
unsavoury verity. One of my bones of contention is that the consumer reads the organic term so
frequently that marketing has inadvertently diluted the organic term s validity. For a starter, soil
has to be fertile to grow produce apparently, fertile soil benefits from even greater quantities of
chemical fertilizer; of the premise, organic matter isn t available en mass, to facilitate our inflated
populace; hence, it s pure ignorance to systematically take the view organic produce hasn t been
treated and claim it has more superior qualities. Oh yes, the imperialist Supermarkets dictate the
tune to which our farmers grange dance to, due to authoritative policies ridding advertising
standard powers to watchdogs meaning the supermarkets are allowed to use every trick in the book
to capitalise on sales; affirmation, why the organic label is 100% marketing. Retailer s awareness is
vehemently tainted and totally imbalanced; their aim is to satisfy their shareholders first and
foremost too few consumers don t configure retailer s allegiances let alone their marketing prowess.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Ronald Reagan s Boys Of Pointe...
Ronald Reagan s Fortieth Anniversary of D Day Speech became known as the Boys of Pointe
Du Hoc Speech written by Peggy Noonan. The speech was delivered on June 6, 1984 in
Normandy, France: the site where the Allied forces invaded the cliffs just forty years before
Reagan had delivered this memorable speech (Stepman). The forum itself was an important
aspect of the speech. The delivery of the speech there, on the windy shore cliffs of northern
France, enhanced the visualization as well as the nostalgia for the Veteran audience as a
backdrop for some of the many examples Reagan had used in his speech. The purpose of this
speech was to not only commemorate the American Ranger Veterans for their valiant efforts in
taking this Nazi stronghold, but to also address the world, and the Soviets, that conquest and
tyranny will not stand in the way of peace and liberty. Through the use of effective rhetorical
devices, Ronald Reagan encompassed his theme that there is something worth fighting for when
someone uses force for conquest rather than the use of force for liberation (12). With his examples
of the brave soldiers forty years before, he discussed how their efforts back then affected the world
at the time. One of the most important rhetorical devices that Reagan used was exemplum.
Throughout the speech, Reagan gave many examples of what the soldiers had done. He described
their courage, difficulties, struggles, loyalty, bravery, risk, passion, and sacrifice, with the scene

Descartes Teachings On Dualism
To understand how the dualist commits a category mistake, one must first understand Descartes
teachings on dualism from the Meditations on First Philosophy. Firstly, Descartes sees the mind
as an immaterial, non physical soul. He believes that his thoughts can be altered but he can
never be tricked into the thinking that he is thinking when he is not. While he has complete
faith in the existence of his mind, he doubts the existence of his body and the existence of other
people s minds. The reason for his doubt in his body is that he believes he can be tricked into
perceiving himself as having a body when he in fact does not. Descartes sees the mind as
separate from the body and believes that the two are composed of different kinds of substances,
one being mental and the other being physical. He further separates the mind from the body by
claiming that because the mind has the property of being undoubtable while the body has the
property of being doubtable, the two cannot be the same thing. According to Gilbert Ryle in his
article Descartes Myth he sets out to prove that there is no distinction between the body and the
mind, that the existence of the mind is obvious, and that Descartes entire theory is founded on
unsound reasoning. Ryle claims that the substance dualist makes a category mistake because they
refer to the mind and the body as existing in two separate categories. He explains that a category
mistake represents the facts of mental life as if they

Fear Of Strangers In Public Spaces
Imagine walking down a crowded city block and knowing every single person that passes by. It s
hard to imagine, because the chances of knowing everyone are improbable. Each day city
dwellers pass by strangers they have never met before and have the good chance of never seeing
again. Each day these dwellers pass by each other without any forms of social acknowledgement
interactions. Though everyone s actions may appear the same, behavioral patterns and mindsets
when interacting and being near strangers in public spaces vary depending on gender. Fear is the
main contributor in behavior and what goes through the minds of people when walking in public
spaces and limit the amount and the ways that interactions take place with strangers. It has been
well established that the specific gender to be more fearful of... Show more content on

The thin body is such a cultural standard and is an unchallenged norm and is rarely questioned as
a state of being. Universal media images reinforce and perpetuate the normalcy of thinness. When
watching a movie, a television show, or even flipping through a magazine, those with a slimmer
body dominate. Even if there is an individual with a slightly larger figure, typically the plot line is
centered around that, and it isn t considered normal. Thin individuals are made to feel welcome
and normal in the usual walks of public life. Meanwhile, those without privilege must negotiate
daily interactions, sometimes feeling shame, guilt, and anger because of their bodies (Kawn 147).
Those without the privilege experience being judged and, at times, verbally abused. These
experiences leave them emotionally scarred and weary of any social interactions with strangers in
public spaces. If they choose to interact they run the risk of the abuse repeating, and only adding to

Scientific View of Creation and the Big Bang Essay
Scientific View of Creation and the Big Bang
A common question among people is why are things the way they are? How was our world
created? There are many different theories, from a variety of views. In this paper I will discuss the
scientific view of the creation theory.
The theory that I will be discussing is the Big Bang Theory, this is currently the theory of creation
accepted by most scientists as the explanation of the beginning of the universe. The big bang theory
suggests that the universe was once extremely compact, dense, and hot. Some uncommon event, a
cosmic explosion called the big bang, occurred about 10 billion to 20 billion years ago, and the
universe has since been expanding and cooling. The theory is ... Show more content on

During the 1990 s Sky Telescope magazine ran a contest to find a better, more dignified name, but
no change was made.
The overall framework of the big bang theory remains unchanged, but some details of the theory are
still being modified today. For example, Einstein himself initially believed that the universe was
static. But when his equations seemed to show that the universe was either expanding or
contracting, Einstein added a constant term to cancel out the expansion or contraction of the
universe. Then, when the expansion of the universe was later discovered, Einstein stated that
adding this cosmological constant had been a mistake.
After Einstein s work of 1917, several scientists, including the abbГ© Georges LemaГ®tre in
Belgium, Willem de Sitter in Holland, and Alexander Friedmann in Russia, came up with
solutions of their own to Einstein s field equations. The universes described by the different
scientists varied. De Sitter s model had no matter in it. This model is actually not considered to be
a bad approximation since the average density of the universe is extremely low. LemaГ®tre s
universe expanded from a primeval atom. Friedmann s universe also expanded from a very dense
clump of matter, but did not involve the cosmological constant. These models helped explain what
happened to the universe shortly after its creation, but there

Hamlet s Soliloquy Essay
When analyzing Shakespeare s Hamlet through the deconstructionist lens various elements of the
play come into sharper focus. Hamlet s beliefs about himself and his crisis over indecision are
expounded upon by the binary oppositions created in his soliloquies. Hamlet s first soliloquy
comes in act one scene two, as Hamletreflects on the current state of events. The chief focus of this
soliloquyis essentially the rottenness of the king, queen and the world in general. In this passage
the reader is introduced to Hamlet pseudo obsession with death and suicide, which later will
become a chief point of indecision. In this particular speech, however, Hamlet is fairly confident.

Hamlet also manages to both degrade himself and his uncle in another comparison, saying his
uncle was no more like my father / Than I to Hercules (1.2.152 3). Though such strong
comparisons to romanticized and mythical figures could are partially simple hyperbole, they also
underscore some of the insecurity in Hamlet s character. The value in recognizing this comes as
Hamlet descends into his madness, whether real or imaginary, where the reader can see that, even
before Hamlet deliberately decides to appear to be mad he has certain issues and insecurities with
his own feelings. Even more significantly, this passage begins to elaborate on Hamlet s relationship
with his mother. Gertrude represents an interesting dilemma for the deconstructionist critic, as she
does not create or involve herself in many conflicts or oppositions. She manages to significantly
affect the plot and the subtext of the play while seeming almost insignificant as a character at first
glance through the deconstructionist lens. She does not overtly affect events, and often plays the
victim of circumstance. This very insignificance creates an issue for Hamlet, who is clearly quite
disgusted with her behavior. He vehemently disapproves of the speed of her marriage to Claudius,
saying that a beast, that wants discourse of reason, / Would have mourned longer (1.2.150 1), but
can find no other strong criticism of her other than how fast she remarried. This strikes at the

Standards: Above Par James is a well respected leader that has high standards for himself and

Customer Satisfaction: Below Par This is a measure that can potentially cause the most controversy
as James is concerned with the survey that is used to asses customer satisfaction. In two quarters,
James scored below par on customer satisfaction. However, he identified the improvement
opportunities and substantially improved service by scores the end of the year.
Overall Evaluation: Above Par we understand that according to current policy James cannot get
an above par overall rating due to a below par score on the customer satisfaction measure.
However, we will disregard the policy in this case due to several reasons: This is the first year the
balanced scorecard was implemented. It will take some time to insure that all the areas are
measured appropriately. James concerns about adequacy of the survey used to measure customer
satisfaction might be valid. Management should review the survey and get some input from the
branch managers on what indicators should be used to measure customer satisfaction. The current

In 1988 abortion legislation was abolished by the supreme court of Canada (Flanagan 120).
Current law was deemed to violate a women s security of person under the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms (Wikipedia). Drafting and passing abortion legislation became the
responsibility of the current Prime Minister and the House of Commons (Flanagan 121). Attempts
by Brian Mulroney to introduce abortion legislation into the House of Commons and senate failed
repeatedly (Flanagan 121). ) Despite public opinion favoring moderate legislation, abortion in
Canada remains unlegislated (Flanagan 121).Under the circumstances stated why does Canadian

Neil postman was a jack of all trades, he was an American Author, an educator at New York

book called Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourage in the Age of show Business. The
book provides a look at what happens when politics, journalism, education and even religion become
subject to the demands of entertainment. In his book Amusing Ourselves to DeathPostman says that
the content of a culture is contained in its communication, and that the content of communication is
affected by the medium of communication. In other words, Postman is saying that a culture is
defined by its connection of people, and the connection of people is afflicted by technology. Sherry

Effects Of Movie Piracy
Pirated movies have grown over the last couple of years. You can see someone on any given
weekend when you walk through the grocery store trying to sale you a movie. Piracy is defined by
Dictionary.com as, the unauthorized reproduction or use of a copyrighted book, recording,
television program, patented invention, trademarked product, etc. Therefore, a pirated movie is
when a movie is released without the owner or person that got the material copy righted it knowing
or consenting to the release. Movie piracyis unethical because it skews the box officefinancial
numbers, decreases the chance for sequels, and hurts the theaters, even though it does provide a
means for people that are less likely to go to the theaters. The movie box office ranks movies by
how much it grosses in the theater over the span of time that it is in theaters. The span of time can
be by day, month, or year. However, we must first understand that when you watch, receive, or
supply a pirated movie there is no money made by the production company. For instance, the movie
may have been seen by five thousand people but if two thousand people view pirated copies then
the number reported will be the profit brought in by the three thousand people. When you look at
the numbers three thousand may seem large but when you think about a movie ticketbeing nine
dollars you will only be making $2.7 million of the $4.5 million that the movie would have made in
the theaters. The money that the movies make goes back

The Codification Of English
In this essay I will discuss the codification of English. It is no doubt that codification of English
was an essential component in the process of standardization. First of allwe can define
codification of English as the process of setting up official system or rules to language components
like words, grammar and pronunciation. In other words Process of codification can be simply
defined as standardizing important aspects or features of a certain languagesuch as words, grammar
and pronunciation. Since the language could be gathered in official dictionary, this means that this
language has been codified. English is the most famous language all over the world. In other words,

of the country. Here we can note the important role of process of codification of English.
Furthermore, we can add that 178 countries in the world have an official language at the national
level. Among those, English is the most common with 51 nations giving it official status. This
proves the need of codification of English. If I want to express my own point of view concerning
the process of codification, I can say that the process of codification of English attributed in
establishing and maintaining English as a language from one side and English as a formal way of
communication between people in the other side. Furthermore I can say that process of codification
of English played central role in creation and use dictionaries, style and usage guides and traditional

Introduction I will review the unethical event that happened in New Zealand. This event lead to

The purpose of this paper will be to define the legitimacy of the organization s behaviors. The
matter of this study is about a New Zealand owned orginzation that is tax payer funded. The
orginzation is one of four utility companies that provided energy services to New Zealand. They
provided these services for a cost (Eweje, 2010 #88). There was incident where there was a

A Short Note On The Battle Of Jutland
Hayden C. Melissa
8th English/ Language Arts
Mr. Kevin L. Nelson
11 January, 2016
Navy
Battle Of Jutland The Battle of Jutland was between the Germans and the British, the conflict was
building up for a while, and on May 31, 1916 is when the battle began. The Battle of Jutland is
one of the biggest naval battles in history, this battle was considered to be the only major naval
battle of World War I . The battle evolved over time due to Britain s declaration that its naval
force was superior in Europe and the introduction in 1906 of the Dreadnought. The British and
the Germans wanted two different things, the British wanted to protect their world wide
kingdom. The Germans were in need of more place than the North Sea s coast and they wanted
full control of the North Sea. Both countries avoided the conflict for a long time because of fear
of losing and making their country vulnerable. A letter from King George to Jellicoe stated: At
this grave moment in our national history I send to you, and through you to the officers and men
of the fleet of which you have assumed command, the assurance of my confidence that, under your
direction, they will revive and renew the old glories of the Royal Navy and prove once again the
sure shield of

Newark, New Jersey Neighborhoods, Real Estate And Rental...
Newark, New Jersey Neighborhoods, Real Estate and Rental Markets
Newark is the most populous city in the state of New Jersey, and one of the nation s largest
shipping hubs. It is the sixty seventh most populous city in the country and has just over two
hundred seventy five thousand residents. This makes it the second most populated city in the New
York metropolitan region, after New York City
. It is the largest port on the Eastern Seaboard,
location of several corporate headquarters, and several universities. It is a diverse city, made up of
five wards containing many neighborhoods that vary greatly, from urban business and industrial
districts, to quiet near rural areas on the outskirts of the city.
Newark, New Jersey Neighborhoods
Newark s residents usually identify themselves by which of the five political wards in they make
their home in, and occasionally by the individual neighborhood in which they live. The East and
South Wards of the city are mostly given over to industrial use and contain most of the airport
and seaport lands. The city s residential areas are largely concentrated in the North, Central, and
West Wards. The size of the wards is dictated by New Jersey State Law. The largest ward in the
city may not be more than ten percent of the average ward size larger, by population, than the
smallest. This requirement necessitates the redrawing of ward boundaries on a somewhat regular
basis.
The Central Ward, which many locals still call by its old name the old

The Legend Of Atlantis By Plato
Atlantis The legend of Atlantis was first introduced to the world at approximately 360 BC, by
the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias who hear of the legend
from Greek lawmaker Solon who was told of the tale by Egyptian priests during his visit to
Egypt. In his dialogues, Plato describes an affluent and powerful nation which arose directly from
the Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon. However, their opulence ceased as they became too greedy,
wicked and impious which led the Gods to destroy Atlantis. Since the legend of Atlantis s debut into
the world, it has long captivated many due to the ongoing possibility of the existence of the island.
Despite its popularity, difficulties arise in determining the truth in... Show more content on

Plato writes, The entire area was densely crowded with habitations; and the canal and the largest
of the harbors were full of vessels and merchants coming from all parts (cited in Donnelly, 1882,
p.14). Although it is commonly believed that Plato s writing in regards to Atlantis is a myth, his
writing about Atlantis shows a clear correlation with the Minoan civilisation. This is evidenced in
the ship procession fresco (cited in Cartwright, 2014), a contemporary source artifact from an
excavated Minoan settlement, which illustrates numerous ships along the harbor, where fishing
and trading is occurring among crowds. The artifact shows a strong connection between Plato s
description of the life and bustle of Atlantis as both civilisations have a strong trade network and
vessels and populous. Due to the remarkable detailing and intricacy of the features displayed on
the artifact, it suggests that the scene must have actually been viewed to be painted with such
description. Not only does the artifact confirm the Minoans vast trading skills and match Plato s
description of Atlantis, but it is also going to show how clever and advanced they were as a
civilisation which further validates the civilisations resemblances with Atlantis. Oft cited author
Rodney Castledon (1998, p. 82) in his widely admired book, Atlantis Destroyed, he asserts, The
Minoans left a rich collection of eloquent images. The

What Is The Similarities Between Flowers For Algernon And...
Does knowledge really bring true happiness? In the story Flowers for Algernon Charlie Gordon is
a 37 year old, mentally challenged man, who wants nothing more than to be smart. Well he got his
chance to be smart and he took it; he was chosen for an operation that could change his life and
make him much more intelligent than he actually was. Charlie thought being smart would make
him normal but the operation ended up being unsuccessful. He went back to the way he was. In the
story The Garden Of Eden, Adam and Evewere chosen to be the first humans. They chose to bite
from the tree of knowledge and disobey God. They were punished to live life and then die. Both
Charlie Gordon, and Adam and eve resemble each other in many ways. Both Flowers for Algernon
and the Garden of Eden are both similar as they both thought biting from the tree of knowledge
would bring them intelligence. In the beginning of the story of Flowers for Algernon, Charlie
was blessed with happiness, but always desired to be smart. Just like the story the Garden of
Eden where Adam and Eve did not necessarily wanted to be smart, but wanted to be like God and
wanted to experience the knowledge like God had. Charlie knew no other life outside of his job and

knowledge was power. They believed that if they bit from the tree of knowledge they would
gain knowledge and be like god. Another theme is think about it before you risk it all. Charlie
risked his happiness to be normal or be just like everyone else ,Adam and Eve risked their freedom

Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Theme Essay
The theme of the book is basically good vs evil and split personality. Mr Utterson tries to solve
the case of Dr Jekyll s will that s linking to the mysterious man Mr Hyde. No one in London
knows who Mr Hyde is, and the few people who saw him described him as weird and slightly
deformed . In the first chapter, Mr Utterson said Mr Hyde is Not easy to describe . And that there
is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright
detestable , and He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity,
although I couldn t specify the point. He s an extraordinary looking man . Dr Jekyll, on the
other hand, is a wealthy rich man in London and is well liked, respectable doctor. The two seems
nothing alike, which is why Mr Utterson is trying to crack the case of the link between Dr Jekyll
and Mr Hyde and why Mr Hyde is mentioned in Dr Jekyll s will.... Show more content on

His appearance is a symbol of evil. Whenever someone looked at him they were instantly
disgusted at the sight of him. Much like Mr Hyde and Dr Jekyll, their respective homes are very
much alike themselves, the difference can be seen when the wealthy Dr Jekyll lives in a well
appointed house, which has a great air of wealth and comfort. While the house that Mr Hyde
lives in is nothing like the house of Dr Jekyll. The main house symbolizes the wealth of Dr
Jekyll, but his laboratory symbolizes Mr Hyde. The laboratory is described as a certain sinister
block of building ...which bore in every feature the marks of profound and sordid negligence.
which symbolizes the corrupted Mr Hyde. Rather than just focusing on one part of the city, the
story sets in many different locations in London. The place that Mr Hyde lives is very dark and
dingy. The city at night much more mysterious and dangerous, so the night is also a symbolism of

The Tax Of The Cadillac Tax
Description The Cadillac tax is a popular name for the highly controversial excise tax on
applicable high cost employer sponsored insurance (ESI) coverage imposed under the Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) (Gravelle, 2015). Great debate ensued following the
proposal of this tax, which was initially set to be implemented in 2013, however differences in
opinion between the House of Representatives and the Senate culminated in the delay in the
implementation of this tax until 2018 (Herring, 2011). It is a nondeductible 40% excise tax on
the value of applicable employer sponsored health coverage that exceeds a determined threshold
(Lowry, 2015). The tax targets employer sponsored health coverage plans that are considered to
be overly generous or have relatively low cost sharing requirements in an effort to raise revenue
to offset the costs of implementing other ACA provisions, as well as encourage a reduction in
the growing expenditure and costs of national health care and offset some of the effects of the
income tax exclusion for ESI (Lowry, 2015). Applicable coverage for the purposes of the
Cadillac tax includes any coverage availed to an employee by an employer that is excludable from
an employee s gross income under section 106 of the IRC (Mach, 2015). Applicable coverage
includes, but is not restricted to an employee s contribution to heath insurance premiums, Health
care flexible spending account (FSA), Health savings account (HSA), Retiree coverage,

Similarities And Differences Between Merchant Of Venice...
Two of Shakespeare s works, The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night, both have a parallel
plot structure which involves a woman disguising herself as a man in order to accomplish some
goal. In the former, Portia disguises herself as a lawyer so as to enter the Duke s court and help her
husband s friend, Antonio, avoid having a pound of his flesh cut off. In the latter, Viola disguises
herself as Cesario so she can enter Duke Orsino s court and work as a page. This parallel structure
is further strengthened by the fact that in both plays, the woman in disguise has to perform some
task that (during Shakespeare s time) was usually performed by a man. Portiahas to defend her
husband s friend, Antonio, in court, while Viola has to engage in a sword fight with Sir Andrew.
Despite the many similarities, there is a subtle difference: Portia seems much more confident in
her role as a man when compared to Viola. We see when Portia is effective and confident as a
lawyer but Viola is reluctant to spar with Sir Andrew in a sword fight, and also when she is weary
that the Fool has caught on to her disguise. This difference reflects the theme of challenging
prejudice in The Merchant of Venice, and also reflect the theme of highlighting gender difference in
Twelfth Night, which reveals a lot about both plays as a whole.
Portia shows much confidence as a lawyer in the trial scene (Act 4 Scene 1) of The Merchant of
Venice. For example, she displays great knowledge of the laws of Venice when

The novel s protagonist chooses to make a radical break with society after he comes to recognize
his own unhappiness. In neo classical economic terms, new information changes views, which in
turn changes behavior. So this tells us that there is a direct correlation between one s own emotional
stability and the availability of free flowing information.
There is an instinctual human need to be curious and seek out answers to unseen questions. It is
very natural for us to ask that a one word question why?? John Stuart Mill s reflection on happiness
in his essay On Utilitarianism offers a normative economic approach to understanding of the search
for happiness and the constraints in the search for one s own need to be an induvial and seeking
knowledge.
Now that we have touched on all the subjects that affect a population in regards to suppression and
keeping that population ignorant to its own past and/or limiting the flow of information. The novel
is set in a futuristic world that is simultaneously militaristic, prosperous and highly controlled. As
mentioned before, there is little hint of the economic system in place. That a prosperous economy
is consistent with strictly controlled flows of information is implausible to mainstream economic
thinking today. Yet recall the novel was written in the early 1950 s, long before the freedom and
prosperity nexus was as well understood as it is

Analysis of The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by...
Analysis of The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway
is known for producing novels and short stories with ambiguous endings. In his short story, The
Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, he definitely leaves his readers guessing. The question is
whether Margot kills her husband,
Francis, intenionally, or if she accidentally shoots him in an effort to save his life. There are many
points that could be argued for both conclusions, but my observations have led me to believe that
Margot did indeed shoot her husband intentionally, however, without pre meditation.
In looking at the background of Francis and Margot, it is easy to see that the strength of their
relationship rests on their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like a dam bursting. It was pure excitement. If Francis is no longer afraid of anything, then it is
possible that he could walk away from Margot. It is also possible that he could find another wife
with his loss of cowardice. When Margot says, in regard to Francis performance with the buffalo, I
hated it....I loathed it, it is apparent that Margot now realizes that the control she had over her
husband is gone. Francis newly discovered independance destroys the equilibrium in their
relationship and leaves Margot on the loosing side of a marriage that she knows is coming to an end.
Another important issue regarding the killing of Francis Macomber is the credibility of the safari
guide, Robert Wilson. He gives the reader an outside perspective of the relationship between
Francis and Margot, but it is whether or not his presumptions are accurate that deems him credible
or not. When Margot tries to downplay the killing of the buffalos by saying, You re both talking
rot...Just because you ve chased some helpless animals in a motor car, you talk like heroes, Wilson
thinks to himself, She s worried about it already. It is obvious that Wilson accurately interprets the
state of the relationship between Francis and Margot because he sees the way that Margot controls
her husband. The clear understanding of the relationship that Wilson shows throughout the story
proves that he is indeed credible.

Chapter 2: Principles for Effective, High Quality Out of School Time Arts Programs
Chapter 2 is centered on ways to implement effective improvements to OST art programs using
stated and latent needs gathered from the participating teens and tweens. Researchers compiled ten
principles that ought to be followed/implemented in order to engage more low income urban youth.
The ten principles are:
Principle 1: Instructors are professional, practicing artists, and are valued with compensation for
their expertise and investment in their professional development
Principle 2: Executive directors have a public commitment to high quality arts programs that is
supported by sustained action
Principle 3: Arts programs take place in dedicated, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Closing Remarks
In the closing of the article, researchers were able to conclude that the reason we are seeing an
underutilization of OST arts programs amongst low income urban youth is because of poor past
experiences that have soiled their desire to participate. Ultimately, what the youth that participated
in the team s focus groups said they wanted aligned with the KOL and case study informed
principles.
Basically, the lesser engaged youth desired the principles utilized in higher quality arts programs by
the highly engaged youth. Researchers go on to suggest that this is the aspect that could lead the
lesser engaged youth to the next level. To fix the damage that has been done, the team suggests that
improving the quality of art programs overall will start to affect an increasing number of youth.
According to this line of thinking, word of mouth will eventually spread, which would greatly
increase.
How It Applies
Although the work that we do may not clearly align with the topic addressed by this article, there
are elements that parallel a couple issues with resident turn out and an overall lack of full
utilization when it comes to the resources offered by the CHA. The following are a few of my

Inflation and Unemployment in Germany
Exact prediction of inflation and unemployment in Germany
Ivan O. Kitov
Abstract
Potential links between inflation, ПЂ(t), and unemployment, UE(t), in Germany have been
examined. There exists a consistent (conventional) Phillips curve despite some changes in monetary
policy. This Phillips curve is characterized by a negative relation between inflationand
unemployment with the latter leading the former by one year: UE(t 1) = 1.50ПЂ(t) + 0.116.
Effectively, growing unemployment has resulted in decreasing inflation since 1971, i.e. for the
period where GDP deflator observations are available. The relation between inflation and
unemployment is statistically reliable with R2=0.86, where unemployment spans the range from

Estimates of the total labor force have been revised from 1987 on, based on census results, and
show a break between 1986 and 1987. Prior to 1984, annual data for the labor force are averages of
monthly and annual estimates supplied by German authorities.
Annual unemployment figures correspond to unemployed persons registered at the end of the
month of September of each year. From 1984, annual average figures are consistent in terms of
methodology and contents with the results of the annual European Labour Force Survey based on
the national Microcensus conducted once a year in April.
2
Therefore one might expect some breaks in linear relationships between the studied variables: labor
force, inflation, and unemployment. However, as shown in
Section 1, the Phillips curve for Germany demonstrates no breaks. The absence of any breaks
evidences in favor of general comparability of the measurements over time.
This paper is primarily aimed at revealing the generalized relationship between the change rate of
labor force level, inflation and unemployment in Germany. Also, individual relationships between
the change rate and inflation, and the change rate and unemployment are investigated.
These relationships allow answering fundamental
questions addresses in numerous studies of inflation and unemployment. For example,

Two Contrasting Places In A Tale Of Two Cities
The inclusion of two contrasting places is an effective way for an author to represent motifs. For
example in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, West Egg and East Egg are utilized to
represent old and new money and the beliefs and values that the people from these places posses.
Through thorough a comparison and contrast of these places much can be learned that may have
been missed without considering what each place represents which allows for enhancement of the
novel as a whole. Specifically, in A Tale of Two Cities
by Charles Dickens, the setting takes place in
both London and Paris. In Paris turmoil is present as the average citizens plan to overthrow the
French government for their harsh rule, and in London peace and a sense of normalness... Show

Through this comparison it can be inferred that although there are differences between the cities,
there is homogeneity between them as well. There were a king with a large jaw, and a queen
with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw, and a queen with
a fair face, on the throne of France (Dickens 13). The idiom used to describe the two kings
exemplifies the similarities between England and France; both countries were ruled by harsh
authoritative rule. Dickens later illustrates this by satirizing the judicial systems in the two
countries. Dickens describes Darnay s trial in London in a way that gives the impression that
the only reason Darnay is guilty is because the jury is loyal to the attorney general and the
attorney general finds Darnay guilty. The jury, being a loyal jury ( as he knew they were), and
being a responsible jury (as they knew they were), must positively find the prisoner guilty, and
make and end of him, whether they liked it or not (Dickens 74). This underscores the
discredibility of the judicial system by entailing that the jury and people in the court to see
someone get killed. Nevertheless, the judicial system in Paris compared to London was
unquestionably exceedingly atrocious. Once convicted of a crime it was ascertained that that
person would be beheaded. There was a higher chance of pigs flying than being proven innocent.
Through the quotation, There were twenty three names, but only twenty were responded to; for
one of the prisoners so summoned had died in gaol and been forgotten, and two had already been
guillotined and forgotten (Dickens 278), Dickens is able to personify the inhumanity in Paris.
Essentially, there were so many people that were being killed that often times it would go
unrecognized if someone on the list was already killed. By

  • 2. Victorian Influence on Women s Fashions Essay Before Research Before the Victorian Era, the main focus of fashion was for men. Women s fashion changed some, but the general idea of long skirts, tight bodices, and heavy fabrics stayed consistent. Real changes to style and fashion were not made until about the 1840 s, when Queen Victoria came into power. After her rise to Queen, the fashions began to change dramatically. Pride and Prejudice is a book written in this time, and the fashion is clearly visible. Looking at fashion of the time can be clear examples of social customs, role models, and other aspects of the time period. The question to start off with is how has royalty affected women s fashions through the ages? Royalty is influential on all sorts of things, so why not fashion? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The beginning of the civil war in America affected the cotton production, so fabric became more scarce, leading into the next era, one that used less fabric. The early bustle period featured a narrower skirt, with gathered fabric on the back. Bodices ended at the natural waist. By 1877, the bustles had dropped to knees, leading into the Natural Form period. By this time, a tall, slim figure was born. Dresses were long and the bodice became long and tight. The Late bustle period brought the bustle back into style. The skirts stayed long and tight, with a large amount of fabric gathered in the back. The 1890 s saw the disappearance of the bustle for good. At this time, skirts became plain, and the bodice was dressed up with frills and puffed sleeves. The popular Pigeon Silhouette of the Victorian era was born. The Edwardian Period was a time of ultimate femininity. The skirts became soft and flowing, and the hobble skirt became popular (What is). This was probably the most interesting part of my research, because I got a deeper look into the world of fashion. The Queen s Fashion I now needed to know what Queen Victoria did for fashion in this time period. I learned through my next source that Queen Victoria and her daughters were often fashion models for women of this period. Typical outfits of this time consisted of cotton fabrics, as they were in abundant supply and allowed air into the often heavy fabrics. Day dresses were worn inside the home, and were ... • 3. The Effects Of Dementia On The Brain Essay Usually in chronic or progressive nature, Dementia is a syndrome where there is a deterioration in one s cognitive function. Which is dramatically greater than normal cognitive deterioration expected from normal aging. It is caused by a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the brain, such as a stroke or Alzheimer s disease, 60 70% of cases are contributed to Alzheimer s. Dementia affects memory, comprehension, calculation, language, judgment, thinking, and learning capacity. This is devastating on the person affected and also the family of the person affected and can commonly lead to deterioration in emotional control, motivation, and social behavior. Worldwide, it is estimated that 47.5 million people are living with dementia, 7.7 million new cases every year, and it is estimated that 75.6 million will be affected in 2030. Dementia is damage of nerve cells in several areas of the brain and affects people differently based on the location of the damaged nerve cells. The type of dementia is usually grouped by what they have in common, as in the area of the brain affected or whether they are progressive (worsen over time). There also some dementias that are caused by a reaction to medications or vitamin deficiencies and can possibly improve with treatment. Progressive dementias that progress over time and are not reversible and have causes that are currently unknown but, over time, science might be able to pinpoint a direct cause. • 4. The Secret Lives of The Brain PART I. Incognito: The Secret Lives of The Brain, was very straight forward and extremely intriguing. As David Eagleman, a neuroscientist, elaborates on the American criminal justice system, he brings out important factors that I believe everyone should be focusing on in this country. He states that our actions are not only made up by our unconscious mind, but the way we perceive things is controlled by our unconscious ability to even realize we are controlling it. The conscious mind not only represents only a small part of our brain activity and function, but it also perceives certain behaviors differently when constructed with drugs or damage The process of the unconscious brain activity differs from the conscious part but they both... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... David Eagleman explained in detail how the cognitive brain works and what factors play a part in the thought process. He did so by picking apart different segments of the brain and describing what developmental processes it goes through when obtaining thought and language. I would definitely recommend this book to other people if they want to better understand how people think, act, and behave. When certain things are skewed in the brain, it reacts in many different ways. Whether that be poorly or very highly. It depends on what factors are brought upon the brain and what that specific part of the brain takes in. Eagleman does a fantastic job explaining with good humor how the thought process comes about. Without our cognitive ability to think and act, there would be no personality or knowledge on this earth. I believe that the book was sort of well organized in that Eagleman did a good job of pairing together segments of the brain and explaining how they work together or as a whole. But, I did however, think that Eagleman jumped around a lot and didn t seem very clear in some parts. For instance, when he would talk about how the conscious mind is just the tip of the iceberg in the brain, then what is the rest of the brain doing? He goes into detail about the conscious and unconscious brain, but what about the subconscious part? It s crazy to think that our body can react to certain stimuli and situations before we even realize that we need to act upon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the nineteenth century the whole idea of reforming young offenders systems took root all over the United Statesand the house of Refugee found in the New York that opened in the 1824 became the first juvenile house. • 7. How Social Reformers Influenced Edward Bellamy, Henry... How did social reformers such as Edward Bellamy, Henry George, and the Knights of Labor conceive of liberty and freedom differently than the proponents of the liberty of contract and laissez faire like Herbert Spencer and Andrew Carnegie? Which of these groups was successful in imposing their vision on the larger society in the years before the turn of the century? Why? Introduction Liberty and freedom was conceived differently by the social reformers and the proponents of the liberty of contract and laissez faire. The difference actually emanated in the manner in which the two groups interpreted the suitability of the operation of the economy. While the economy can operate on the basis of capitalism where individualism and private property are the basis of creating wealth, it can also operate on the basis of collectivity, where communism and pooling of the labor and output together forms the basis of wealth accumulation for the society. In this respect, the social reformers such as Edward Bellamy, Henry George, and the Knights of Labor conceived the freedom and liberty to entail the rights of the laborers to earn better wages, work for a few hours and have a legal tender mechanism from the government that was not under the control of the banks . On the other hand, the proponents of the liberty of contract and laissez faire like Herbert Spencer and Andrew Carnegie conceived the liberty and freedom to entail individualism and private property ownership as the basis of ... Moreover, the disparate communities within Latin America had established a unique culture characterized by its hybridity. A close reading of Ignacio de Castro s From Spaniard and Indian, a Mestizo is born and Agostino Brunias s Planter and His Wife with a Servant reveals the racial hierarchy that formed amid Latin America s hybridity. Additionally, both objects specifically express Latin American hybridity for a white, European class, likely as a means to demystify and boost the standing of the New World. • 10. Beam Hammer Essay DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF BEAM HAMMER Abstract Beam hammer is a device which works on the principle of beam engine or inversion of four bar mechanism. Cast iron plates are used to construct the rigid beam engine mechanism which is one of the applications of four bar chain. The wooden bed is used to absorb the vibrations caused while operating the system. Nuts and bolts are made up of carbon steel which is capable of withstand deformation while reciprocating motion takes place. The hammer and the work rest are made up of mild steel because while hammer hitting the work piece deformation occurs both in the hammer and the work rest. To prevent the deformation, the mild steel is chosen in our project. When the crank is rotated, according to the beam engine mechanism it is converted into reciprocating motion on the other side through inversion of four bar mechanism, is achieved a prescribed hammering action on the cast iron work piece. 1. Introduction 1.1 Beam Engine Mechanism It is based on four bar chain mechanism. The function of the mechanism is to convert the rotary motion of the crank into reciprocating motion [1]. In this mechanism, when the crank AB rotates about the fixed centre A, the lever CDE oscillates about the centre D and the end of the lever E is connected to a piston rod which reciprocates in the cylinder as shown in Figure 1. Rigid material is used to withstand deformation and vibration caused by the lever for designing the beam of the mechanism [7]. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The education of the Frankish Empire was almost nonexistent so the first step Charlemagne made was simply encouraging intellectual curiosity and learning. He gathered many wise men to his court, including Alcuin, Peter of pisa, Paulinus, Theodulf, and Agobard. They encompassed diverse fields like grammarian, historian, poet, theologian, and came from far away places like Italy, Spain, and Ireland.7 Charlemagne highly valued their wisdom and would reward them lavishly with money and property such as abbeys.8 with these great men, Charlemagne set up the first school at his palace to teach reading, writing, and the scriptures. One story by Mayke de Jong, gives an illustration of just how much Charlemagne valued education. In America, Lourdes works a series of menial jobs that are continually disappearing. She lives in a small trailer and can never seem to raise enough money to have her children smuggled over the border. There are many reasons why the poverty population in Honduras is exorbitant. These reasons can be explained in a macro, micro, and mezzo way. According to Gamble (2013), the practice of macro social work involves intervening in large systems to help clients (Gamble, 2013). Honduras has an extremely corrupt government. The country is as poor as it is violent. In the film, The Other Side of Immigration (2009), citizens were interviewed and asked about their feelings on their government. One man said that he does not trust his government. He also stated that he will not take part in any strikes against the government because he feels that it will do no good (Germano, 2009). The average person does not have the knowledge needed to correlate their fitness program with diet. As a result, mistakes are often made and those mistakes hinder progress. Diet and exercise go hand in hand and there must be a balance. That balance is where our weekly nutritiontip comes in. Check it out. Nutrition Tip This time let s talk fat. Yes, fat. When someone wants to lose weight or achieve a more defined physical physique they immediately think, I have to eliminate the fat from my diet . Of course dietary fat should be consumed in moderation but it is needed. The only dietary fat in any meal plan must be healthy fats. This means monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids. For most, 20% of their diet should be fat and the remaining 80% will be protein and complex carbs. When good fats are consumed not only do they deliver endless benefits to the body like lowering bad cholesterol levels and strengthening the immune system but they actually assist in fat burn. • 15. Capitalism And Capitalism Essay In today s society, each and every one of use has a different view on what capitalism is and what freedom is. As we went through this section we focused on different writing that covered capitalism and freedom and the cultural view on each aspect. While all focused on these aspects they all had their own view on what each was and what utopian society would be like for each and everyone. From all of these documents we get a wider picture of what one person in one certain culture views freedom versus what another culture views as freedom. Looking back onto the texts that we have discussed the most prominent documents that we looked into that really spoke to the true meaning of freedom and capitalism lays with Friedrich Hayek s work in The Road to Serfdom, The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, and the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marxand Friedrich Engels. All three works focus on capitalism and freedom but everyone has a different view of what those look like to them. Starting with The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek, we see that socialism is only possible if freedom is taken into account. WIthout focusing on the aspects of freedom such as Positive and Negative Freedoms, it would not be possible to work as a society if we did not focus on the God given freedoms that are placed in every society. Throughout this document we see that the German government in my perspective couldn t agree on certain plans and regulations that ultimately lead to the rise of the dictatorship under Hitler. This view on capitalism that is perceived in this text is one that the United States has been slowly creeping toward but we have never felt it rapidly enough to notice what is actually happening. As we slowly creep into the future, more regulations and more restrictions are from just as it happened in German. The main focus of this text was what went wrong in Germany and the relationship that was shown between socialism and fascism. Also this text focuses on the different parts of planning Вќ that occurred and how these different types of planning ultimately affected the German societies. Also in this document we learned about rule of law. Rule of law tells use that a law should govern a nation and not having one individual government ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Theory Of Attachment Proposed By John Bowlby And Mary... The lectures, discussions in class, and chapter readings highlighted the importance of one of the characteristics of human nature, which is relationships and attachment. The course materials emphasized the critical role of relationship and attachment to the development of the children. The internship site also provided an opportunity for me to visualize different attachments and relationships between parent and child in action. As the chapter readings from the textbook explore different perspectives of relationship and attachment proposed by various theorists, the class discussions and lectures furthered my understanding and knowledge of parent child relationships. In chapter 3, the theory of attachment proposed by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth is explored. First, Bowlby s theory of attachment was influenced by the ethological theorist, Darwin, Lorenz, and Tinbergen, who were previously mentioned in the chapter. Bowlby emphasized that behaviors found in animals, such as seeking close proximity from mothers to reduce the chance of becoming a prey, can also be found in toddlers. For example, Bowlby defined that actions such as following, crying out, and clinging found in children are displayed in order to keep close distance to parents is called attachment behaviors. Bowlby incorporates imprinting and instincts, which are ethological terms, to explain different phases of attachment. As the child develops through time, the attachment of child and parent deepens their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Book Report On The Book Le Gai Savoir I remember the first time I heard about Nietzsche was a few years ago, in my chemistry class. I had a friend who spent all his time, in science classes, reading books about philosophy. His nonconformity caught my attention. I started to be interested by the big mustache of the author on the cover page of his book Le Gai Savoir, because I knew, of course, that all authors with big mustache such as Victor Hugo and Albert Einstein wrote about great things! So I started to read Nietzsche s works. Then, one day, my dad caught me reading Le Gai Savoir and he told me that this philosopher, born in a town near Leipzig on 15 October 1844 (Wotling 797), had changed the way he perceived his life. He told me that when he was eighteen in China, he was very poor and due to his stressful condition, he failed the final admission exam for a university. Because of the high amount of population and competition in China, the final exam decides unfortunately the fate of a person. He had developed depression. However, one day, he bought a Nietzsche s book and started to read it. He told me that Nietzsche s poetry and positive ideas motivated him to change his life, to be greater, and to become who [he really is] (Nietzsche, Le Gai Savoir 251). We often take our mental health for granted, but the novel Life of Pi as well as the movie Shutter Island encourage us to look deeper within ourselves and to truly be grateful for the fact that we most of us are mentally stable. That is just one idea that these two works explore. What are they exactly about though? Life of Pi, a novel by Yann Martelpublished in 2001, is about a sixteen year old Indian boy named Piscine Molitor Patel who experienced a horrendous shipwreck. Shutter Island, a movie directed by Martin Scorsese from 2010, on the other hand, is about a man named Andrew Laeddis who experienced his own traumatic event. It was therefore with this quotation that readers discovered that Pi s alter ego was Richard Parker. In Shutter Island, Andrew also created an alter ego for himself. His alter ego was a man named Edward Daniels, which was an anagram for Andrew Laeddis. As with Life of Pi, this alter ego was not revealed to the viewers of the film until the end when Andrew faced Dr. Cawley in the lighthouse. Dr. Cawley said, The names have the same letters. Edward Daniels has exactly the same thirteen letters as Andrew Laeddis, the same as Rachel Solando and Dolores Chanal. The names are anagrams for each other. In that moment, it became evident that Andrew had created an alter ego for himself. The next similarity between the two works in relation to alter ego is the fact that the main characters both used their alter egos to distance themselves from the acts they committed. In Life of Pi, Pi used his alter ego to cover up his killing of the cook during the journey on the lifeboat. Pi did this because he could not believe that he allowed himself to stoop down to such low levels in order to kill a man. He expressed this when he said (referring to the cook), He was such an evil man. Worse still, he met evil in me selfishness, anger, ruthlessness. I must live with that (Martel 345). The speech was delivered on June 6, 1984 in Normandy, France: the site where the Allied forces invaded the cliffs just forty years before Reagan had delivered this memorable speech (Stepman). The forum itself was an important aspect of the speech. The delivery of the speech there, on the windy shore cliffs of northern France, enhanced the visualization as well as the nostalgia for the Veteran audience as a backdrop for some of the many examples Reagan had used in his speech. The purpose of this speech was to not only commemorate the American Ranger Veterans for their valiant efforts in taking this Nazi stronghold, but to also address the world, and the Soviets, that conquest and tyranny will not stand in the way of peace and liberty. Through the use of effective rhetorical devices, Ronald Reagan encompassed his theme that there is something worth fighting for when someone uses force for conquest rather than the use of force for liberation (12). With his examples of the brave soldiers forty years before, he discussed how their efforts back then affected the world at the time. One of the most important rhetorical devices that Reagan used was exemplum. Throughout the speech, Reagan gave many examples of what the soldiers had done. • 27. Descartes Teachings On Dualism To understand how the dualist commits a category mistake, one must first understand Descartes teachings on dualism from the Meditations on First Philosophy. Firstly, Descartes sees the mind as an immaterial, non physical soul. He believes that his thoughts can be altered but he can never be tricked into the thinking that he is thinking when he is not. While he has complete faith in the existence of his mind, he doubts the existence of his body and the existence of other people s minds. The reason for his doubt in his body is that he believes he can be tricked into perceiving himself as having a body when he in fact does not. Descartes sees the mind as separate from the body and believes that the two are composed of different kinds of substances, one being mental and the other being physical. He further separates the mind from the body by claiming that because the mind has the property of being undoubtable while the body has the property of being doubtable, the two cannot be the same thing. According to Gilbert Ryle in his article Descartes Myth he sets out to prove that there is no distinction between the body and the mind, that the existence of the mind is obvious, and that Descartes entire theory is founded on unsound reasoning. Ryle claims that the substance dualist makes a category mistake because they refer to the mind and the body as existing in two separate categories. The overall framework of the big bang theory remains unchanged, but some details of the theory are still being modified today. For example, Einstein himself initially believed that the universe was static. But when his equations seemed to show that the universe was either expanding or contracting, Einstein added a constant term to cancel out the expansion or contraction of the universe. Then, when the expansion of the universe was later discovered, Einstein stated that adding this cosmological constant had been a mistake. After Einstein s work of 1917, several scientists, including the abbГ© Georges LemaГ®tre in Belgium, Willem de Sitter in Holland, and Alexander Friedmann in Russia, came up with solutions of their own to Einstein s field equations. The universes described by the different scientists varied. De Sitter s model had no matter in it. • 38. Effects Of Movie Piracy Pirated movies have grown over the last couple of years. You can see someone on any given weekend when you walk through the grocery store trying to sale you a movie. Piracy is defined by Dictionary.com as, the unauthorized reproduction or use of a copyrighted book, recording, television program, patented invention, trademarked product, etc. Therefore, a pirated movie is when a movie is released without the owner or person that got the material copy righted it knowing or consenting to the release. Movie piracyis unethical because it skews the box officefinancial numbers, decreases the chance for sequels, and hurts the theaters, even though it does provide a means for people that are less likely to go to the theaters. The movie box office ranks movies by how much it grosses in the theater over the span of time that it is in theaters. The span of time can be by day, month, or year. However, we must first understand that when you watch, receive, or supply a pirated movie there is no money made by the production company. For instance, the movie may have been seen by five thousand people but if two thousand people view pirated copies then the number reported will be the profit brought in by the three thousand people. When you look at the numbers three thousand may seem large but when you think about a movie ticketbeing nine dollars you will only be making $2.7 million of the $4.5 million that the movie would have made in the theaters. The money that the movies make goes back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Plato writes, The entire area was densely crowded with habitations; and the canal and the largest of the harbors were full of vessels and merchants coming from all parts (cited in Donnelly, 1882, p.14). Although it is commonly believed that Plato s writing in regards to Atlantis is a myth, his writing about Atlantis shows a clear correlation with the Minoan civilisation. This is evidenced in the ship procession fresco (cited in Cartwright, 2014), a contemporary source artifact from an excavated Minoan settlement, which illustrates numerous ships along the harbor, where fishing and trading is occurring among crowds. The artifact shows a strong connection between Plato s description of the life and bustle of Atlantis as both civilisations have a strong trade network and vessels and populous. Due to the remarkable detailing and intricacy of the features displayed on the artifact, it suggests that the scene must have actually been viewed to be painted with such description. Not only does the artifact confirm the Minoans vast trading skills and match Plato s description of Atlantis, but it is also going to show how clever and advanced they were as a civilisation which further validates the civilisations resemblances with Atlantis. • 48. The Tax Of The Cadillac Tax Description The Cadillac tax is a popular name for the highly controversial excise tax on applicable high cost employer sponsored insurance (ESI) coverage imposed under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) (Gravelle, 2015). Great debate ensued following the proposal of this tax, which was initially set to be implemented in 2013, however differences in opinion between the House of Representatives and the Senate culminated in the delay in the implementation of this tax until 2018 (Herring, 2011). It is a nondeductible 40% excise tax on the value of applicable employer sponsored health coverage that exceeds a determined threshold (Lowry, 2015). The tax targets employer sponsored health coverage plans that are considered to be overly generous or have relatively low cost sharing requirements in an effort to raise revenue to offset the costs of implementing other ACA provisions, as well as encourage a reduction in the growing expenditure and costs of national health care and offset some of the effects of the income tax exclusion for ESI (Lowry, 2015). Applicable coverage for the purposes of the Cadillac tax includes any coverage availed to an employee by an employer that is excludable from an employee s gross income under section 106 of the IRC (Mach, 2015). • 49. Similarities And Differences Between Merchant Of Venice... Two of Shakespeare s works, The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night, both have a parallel plot structure which involves a woman disguising herself as a man in order to accomplish some goal. In the former, Portia disguises herself as a lawyer so as to enter the Duke s court and help her husband s friend, Antonio, avoid having a pound of his flesh cut off. In the latter, Viola disguises herself as Cesario so she can enter Duke Orsino s court and work as a page. This parallel structure is further strengthened by the fact that in both plays, the woman in disguise has to perform some task that (during Shakespeare s time) was usually performed by a man. Portiahas to defend her husband s friend, Antonio, in court, while Viola has to engage in a sword fight with Sir Andrew. Despite the many similarities, there is a subtle difference: Portia seems much more confident in her role as a man when compared to Viola. We see when Portia is effective and confident as a lawyer but Viola is reluctant to spar with Sir Andrew in a sword fight, and also when she is weary that the Fool has caught on to her disguise. This difference reflects the theme of challenging prejudice in The Merchant of Venice, and also reflect the theme of highlighting gender difference in Twelfth Night, which reveals a lot about both plays as a whole. Portia shows much confidence as a lawyer in the trial scene (Act 4 Scene 1) of The Merchant of Venice. For example, she displays great knowledge of the laws of Venice when ... This Phillips curve is characterized by a negative relation between inflationand unemployment with the latter leading the former by one year: UE(t 1) = 1.50ПЂ(t) + 0.116. Effectively, growing unemployment has resulted in decreasing inflation since 1971, i.e. for the period where GDP deflator observations are available. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, West Egg and East Egg are utilized to represent old and new money and the beliefs and values that the people from these places posses. Through thorough a comparison and contrast of these places much can be learned that may have been missed without considering what each place represents which allows for enhancement of the novel as a whole. Specifically, in A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, the setting takes place in both London and Paris. In Paris turmoil is present as the average citizens plan to overthrow the French government for their harsh rule, and in London peace and a sense of normalness... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this comparison it can be inferred that although there are differences between the cities, there is homogeneity between them as well. There were a king with a large jaw, and a queen with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw, and a queen with a fair face, on the throne of France (Dickens 13). The idiom used to describe the two kings exemplifies the similarities between England and France; both countries were ruled by harsh authoritative rule. Dickens later illustrates this by satirizing the judicial systems in the two countries. Dickens describes Darnay s trial in London in a way that gives the impression that the only reason Darnay is guilty is because the jury is loyal to the attorney general and the attorney general finds Darnay guilty. The jury, being a loyal jury ( as he knew they were), and being a responsible jury (as they knew they were), must positively find the prisoner guilty, and make and end of him, whether they liked it or not (Dickens 74). This underscores the discredibility of the judicial system by entailing that the jury and people in the court to see someone get killed. Nevertheless, the judicial system in Paris compared to London was unquestionably exceedingly atrocious. Once convicted of a crime it was ascertained that that person would be beheaded. There was a higher chance of pigs flying than being proven innocent. Through the quotation, There were twenty three names, but only twenty were responded to; for one of the prisoners so summoned had died in gaol and been forgotten, and two had already been guillotined and forgotten (Dickens 278), Dickens is able to personify the inhumanity in Paris. Essentially, there were so many people that were being killed that often times it would go unrecognized if someone on the list was already killed. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
